It is shown that high-redshift quasars of bright apparent magnitude are concentrated in the direction of the centre of the Local Group of galaxies. A number of them are distributed along a line originating from the Local Group companion galaxy, M 33. A similar, but shorter and fainter line of quasars is seen emanating from the spiral galaxy NGC 300 in the next nearest, Sculptor Group of galaxies. The concentration of bright quasars in the Local Group direction is supported by bright radio sources catalogued in high-frequency surveys. One of the consequences of this large-scale inhomogeneity is to explain the different gradient of radio source counts in the direction of the Local Supercluster, a result discovered in 1978 but never investigated further. Previously reported homogeneity and isotropy of radio-source counts over the sky would seem to be an effect of integrating nearby, large-scale groupings with more distant, smaller-scale groupings over different directions in the sky. More careful analyses as a function of flux strength and spectral index on various scales over the sky are now required. Previous conclusions about radio source and quasar luminosity and number evolution drawn from logN- logS counts would then need to be re-evaluated.  相似文献

Based on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR6 (SDSS) and the Millennium Simulation (MS), we investigate the alignment between galaxies and large-scale struc-ture. For this purpose, we develop two new statistical tools, namely the alignment cor-relation function and the cos(20)-statistic. The former is a two-dimensional extension of the traditional two-point correlation function and the latter is related to the ellipticity correlation function used for cosmic shear measurements. Both are based on the cross correlation between a sample of galaxies with orientations and a reference sample which represents the large-scale structure. We apply the new statistics to the SDSS galaxy cat-alog. The alignment correlation function reveals an overabundance of reference galaxies along the major axes of red, luminous (L L*) galaxies out to projected separations of 60 h-1Mpc. The signal increases with central galaxy luminosity. No alignment signal is detected for blue galaxies. The cos(2θ)-statistic yields very similar results. Starting from a MS semi-analytic galaxy catalog, we assign an orientation to each red, luminous and central galaxy, based on that of the central region of the host halo (with size similar to that of the stellar galaxy). As an alternative, we use the orientation of the host halo itself. We find a mean projected misalignment between a halo and its central region of ~ 25°. The misalignment decreases slightly with increasing luminosity of the central galaxy. Using the orientations and luminosities of the semi-analytic galaxies, we repeat our alignment analysis on mock surveys of the MS. Agreement with the SDSS results is good if the central orientations are used. Predictions using the halo orientations as proxies for cen-tral galaxy orientations overestimate the observed alignment by more than a factor of 2. Finally, the large volume of the MS allows us to generate a two-dimensional map of the alignment correlation function, which shows the reference galaxy distribution to be flat-tened parallel to the orientations of red luminous galaxies with axis ratios of ~ 0.5 and ~ 0.75 for halo and central orientations, respectively. These ratios are almost independent of scale out to 60h-1Mpc.  相似文献

We analyze the statistical properties of normal galaxies to be detected in the all-sky survey by the eROSITA X-ray telescope of the Spectrum-X-Gamma observatory. With the current configuration and parameters of the eROSITA telescope, the sensitivity of a 4-year-long all-sky survey will be ≈10?14 erg s?1 in the 0.5–2 keV band. This will allow ~(1.5–2) × 104 normal galaxies with approximately the same contribution of star-forming and elliptical galaxies to be detected. All galaxies of the X-ray survey are expected to enter into the existing far-infrared (IRAS) or near-infrared (2MASS) catalogs; the sample of star-forming galaxies will be approximately equivalent in sensitivity to the sample of star-forming galaxies in the IRAS catalog of infrared sources. Thus, a large homogeneous sample of normal galaxies with measured X-ray, near-infrared, and far-infrared fluxes will be formed. About 90% of the galaxies in the survey are located within ~200–400 Mpc. A typical (most probable) galaxy will have a luminosity log L X ~ 40.5–41.0, will be located at a distance of ~70–90 Mpc, and will be either a star-forming galaxy with a star formation rate of ~20M yr?1 whose X-ray emission is produced by ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) or an elliptical galaxy with amass log M * ~ 11.3 emitting through to a hot interstellar gas. The galaxies within 35 Mpc will collectively contain ~102 ULXs with luminosities log L X > 40, ~80% of whichwill be the only luminous source in the galaxy. Thus, although the angular resolution of the eROSITA telescope is too low for the luminosity function of compact sources in galaxies to be studied in detail, the survey data will allow one to investigate its bright end and, possibly, to impose constraints on the maximum luminosity of ULXs.  相似文献

Results from a spectrophotometric study of 21 galaxies with UV excess are presented. The half widths (FWHM) and equivalent widths of observed spectrum lines of these galaxies, as well as the relative intensities of the emission lines observed in the spectrum of the galaxy Kaz243, are determined. It is conjectured that the latter galaxy has the properties of an Sy2 type galaxy. The electron densities and masses of the gaseous components are found for 15 galaxies, along with the masses of 8 galaxies for which the ratio M/L has been calculated. It is shown that the spectral structures of these galaxies do not depend on whether they are members of physical systems or are isolated.  相似文献

We present results for the first three low-power radio galaxies from the B2 bright sample to have been observed with Chandra . Two have kiloparsec-scale radio jets, and in both Chandra resolves jet X-ray emission, and detects soft X-ray core emission and an X-ray-emitting galaxy-scale atmosphere of luminosity a few ×1041 erg s−1. These are the first detections of X-ray jets in low-power radio galaxies more distant than Centaurus A and M87. The cooling time of the galaxy-scale gas implies mass infall rates of the order of 1 M yr−1. The gas pressure near the jets is comparable to the minimum pressure in the jets, implying that the X-ray-emitting gas may play an important role in jet dynamics. The third B2 radio galaxy has no kiloparsec-scale radio jet, and here only soft X-ray emission from the core is detected. The ratio of X-ray to radio flux is similar for the jets and cores, and the results favour a synchrotron origin for the emission. Kiloparsec-scale radio jets are detected in the X-ray in ∼7-ks exposures with Chandra more readily than in the optical via Hubble Space Telescope snapshot surveys.  相似文献

We report the serendipitous detection of a Wide-Angle Tail (WAT) radio galaxy at 240 and 610 MHz, using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). This WAT is hosted by a cD galaxy PGC 1519010 whose photometric redshift given in the SDSS DR6 catalogue is close to the spectroscopic redshifts (0.105, 0.106 and 0.107) of three galaxies found within 4′ of the cD. Using the SDSS DR6, we have identified a total of 37 galaxies within 15′ of the cD, whose photometric redshifts are between 0.08 and 0.14. This strongly suggests that the cD is associated with a group of galaxies whose conspicuous feature is a north-south chain of galaxies (filament) extending to at least 2.6 Mpc. The ROSAT all-sky survey shows a faint, diffuse X-ray source in this direction, which probably marks the hot intracluster gas in the potential well of this group. We combine the radio structural information for this WAT with the galaxy clustering in that region to check its overall consistency with the models of WAT formation. The bending of the jet before and after its disruption forming the radio plume, are found to be correlated in this WAT, as seen from the contrasting morphological patterns on the two sides of the core. Probable constraints imposed by this on the models of WAT formation are pointed out. We also briefly report on the other interesting radio sources found in the proximity of the WAT. These include a highly asymmetric double radio source and an ultra-steep spectrum radio source for which no optical counterpart is detected in the SDSS.  相似文献

We show that the number of galaxies with ultraviolet excess in the Kiso catalog decreases rapidly as the inclincation of the galaxy to the line of sight increases. This effect is observed in spiral galaxies of both type Sk and type Sp. Moreover spiral galaxies that are steeply inclined to the line of sight are on the average weaker than galaxies viewed face-on. Due to internal absorption the distribution of UV-excess galaxies over the intensity classes L, M, and H is also distorted.Translated fromAstrofizika, Vol. 37, No. 4, 1994.The authors are grateful to E. We present Chandra , Very Large Array (VLA) and Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of the nucleus of NGC 4696, a giant elliptical in the Centaurus cluster of galaxies. Like M87 in the Virgo cluster, PKS 1246−410 in the Centaurus cluster is a nearby example of a radio galaxy in a dense cluster environment. In analysing the new X-ray data, we have found a compact X-ray feature coincident with the optical and radio core. While nuclear emission from the X-ray source is expected, its luminosity is low,  <1040 erg s−1  . We estimate the Bondi accretion radius to be 30 pc and the accretion rate to be  0.01 M yr−1  , which under the canonical radiative efficiency of 10 per cent would overproduce by 3.5 orders of magnitude the radiative luminosity. Much of this energy can be directed into the kinetic energy of the jet, which over time inflates the observed cavities seen in the thermal gas. The VLBA observations reveal a weak nucleus and a broad, one-sided jet extending over 25 pc in position angle −150°. This jet is deflected on the kiloparsec-scale to a more east–west orientation (position angle of −80°).  相似文献

Until recently, few unequivocal detections had been reported of the hot, X-ray emitting gas thought to be associated with the large, coherent structures variously described as supershells or superbubbles in dwarf irregular (dIrr) galaxies. In this contribution we report follow-up XMM-Newton and Chandra observations of our ROSAT detection of X-ray emission associated with the supergiant shell in the nearby dIrr galaxy IC 2574, a member of the M 81 group of galaxies. The spectral properties of the X-ray source suggest that we are dealing with a young (age < 2000 yr) supernova remnant (SNR). This SNR is most likely one of the many supernovae which have exploded in that region and which have created the impressive supergiant HI shell. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The HESS experiment (High Energy Stereoscopic System), consisting of four imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) in Namibia, has observed many extragalactic objects in the search for very high energy (VHE) γ-ray emission. These objects include active galactic nuclei (AGN), notably Blazars, Seyferts, radio galaxies, starburst galaxies and others. Beyond the established sources, γ-ray emission has been detected for the first time from several of these objects by HESS, and their energy spectra and variability characteristics have been measured. Multi-wavelength campaigns, including X-ray satellites, radio telescopes, and optical observations, have been carried out for AGNs, in particular for PKS 2155-304, H 2356-309 and 1ES 1101-232, for which the implications concerning emission models are presented. Also results from the investigations of VHE flux variability from the giant radio galaxy M 87 are shown. For the HESS Collaboration.  相似文献

It is known that resonant scattering can distort the surface brightness profiles of clusters of galaxies in X-ray lines. We demonstrate that the scattered line emission should be polarized and possibly detectable with future X-ray polarimeters. Spectrally resolved mapping of a galaxy cluster in polarized X-rays could provide valuable independent information on the physical conditions, in particular element abundances and the characteristic velocity of small-scale turbulent motions, in the intracluster gas. The expected degree of polarization is of the order of 10 per cent for the richest regular clusters (e.g. Coma) and clusters whose X-ray emission is dominated by a central cooling flow (such as Perseus and M87/Virgo).  相似文献

The alignment between satellite and central galaxies serves as a proxy for addressing the issue of galaxy formation and evolution, and has been investigated abundantly in observations and theoretical works. Most scenarios indicate that the satellites preferentially are located along the major axis of their central galaxy. Recent work shows that the strength of alignment signals depends on the large-scale environment in observations. We use the publicly-released data from EAGLE to figure out whether the same effect can be found in the associated hydrodynamic simulation. We found much stronger environmental dependency of alignment signals in the simulation. We also explore change of alignments to address the formation of this effect.  相似文献

We have used a deep Chandra observation of the central regions of the twin-jet Fanaroff–Riley class I (FRI) radio galaxy 3C 31 to resolve the thermal X-ray emission in the central few kpc of the host galaxy, NGC 383, where the jets are thought to be decelerating rapidly. This allows us to make high-precision measurements of the density, temperature and pressure distributions in this region, and to show that the X-ray emitting gas in the centre of the galaxy has a cooling time of only  5×107 yr  . In a companion paper, these measurements are used to place constraints on models of the jet dynamics.
A previously unknown one-sided X-ray jet in 3C 31, extending up to 8 arcsec from the nucleus, is detected and resolved. Its structure and steep X-ray spectrum are similar to those of X-ray jets known in other FRI sources, and we attribute the radiation to synchrotron emission from a high-energy population of electrons. In situ particle acceleration is required in the region of the jet where bulk deceleration is taking place.
We also present X-ray spectra and luminosities of the galaxies in the Arp 331 chain of which NGC 383 is a member. The spectrum and spatial properties of the nearby bright X-ray source 1E 0104+3153 are used to argue that the soft X-ray emission is mostly due to a foreground group of galaxies rather than to the background broad absorption-line quasar.  相似文献

A galaxy model with a satellite companion is used to study the character of motion for stars moving in the xy plane. It is observed that a large part of the phase plane is covered by chaotic orbits. The percentage of chaotic orbits increases when the galaxy has a dense nucleus of massMn. The presence of the dense nucleus also increases the stellar velocities near the center of the galaxy. For small values of the distance R between the two bodies, low energy stars display a chaotic region near the centre of the galaxy, when the dense nucleus is present, while for larger values of R the motion in active galaxies is regular for low energy stars. Our results suggest that in galaxies with a satellite companion, the chaotic character of motion is not only a result of galactic interaction but also a result caused by the dense nucleus. Theoretical arguments are used to support the numerical outcomes. We follow the evolution of the galaxy, as mass is transported adiabatically from the disk to the nucleus. Our numerical results are in satisfactory agreement with observational data from M51‐type binary galaxies (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

It is shown that the radial velocity dispersion of the elongated HCGs (b/a ≤ 0.2) with smaller two‐dimensional galaxy‐galaxy median projected separation R is, on average, higher than those of the groups with larger R. It shows that galaxies in a group move preferentially along its elongation. Inspection of radial velocities of member galaxies in chain‐like and in roundish HCGs shows that galaxies in HCGs most probably rotate around the gravitational center of the corresponding group. Other two possible mechanisms: flying apart of galaxies from the group in opposite directions, and infall of field galaxies upon the group are excluded. It follows that HCGs are, probably, more stable formations, than it has been assumed. In this case the known inconsistencies between the results of the N‐body simulations and the observational facts are being excluded.  相似文献

The data of Paper I (Doddet al., 1986), representing a catalogue of parameters measured for bright galaxies in field 444 of the Southern Sky Survey, are examined in a search for non-random effects. A global trend of bimodal alignment of galaxies in this field is found. This effect is present even for galaxies of large apparent ellipticity (e0.5) and is interpreted as revealing a real physical phenomenon on the large scale in this field. Analysis of nearest neighbouring pairs of galaxies reveals evidence also for small-scale interactions. The difference in apparent ellipticities between close pairs is larger than would be expected if the galaxies were randomly distributed. Nearest neighbouring galaxies also show a strong preference to be aligned with their major axes parallel. The results are discussed with regard to theories for galaxy formation.  相似文献

We report on centimeter VLA and VLBI observations of the giant, low power radio galaxy 1144+35. On the parsec scale, we see a complex jet component moving away from the center of activity at 2.7h50−1 c. We detect a faint parsec-scale counter-jet and derive a jet velocity of 0.95c and an angle to the line of sight of 25°, consistent with an intrinsically symmetric ejection. These findings lend credence to the claim that even the jets of low-power radio galaxies start out relativistically.  相似文献

A new method to estimate the Doppler beaming factor of relativistic large-scale jet regions is presented. It is based on multiwaveband fitting to radio-to-X-ray continua with synchrotron spectrum models. Combining our method with available observational data of proper motions, we derive the intrinsic velocity as well as the viewing angles to the line of sight for eight knotty regions down the M87 jet. The results favour the 'modest beaming' scenario along the jet, with Doppler factors varying between  ∼2–5  . The inner jet of M87 suffers sharp deceleration, and the intrinsic speed remains roughly constant down the outer jet. The orientation of the inner jet regions is fully consistent with the result of 10°–19° to the line of sight suggested by previous Hubble Space Telescope ( HST ) proper motion studies of the M87 jet. The outer jet, however, shows systematic deflection off the inner jet to a much smaller inclination  (θ≪ 10°)  . Further calculation of knot A suggests that this deflection can be regarded as evidence that the outer jet suffers some departure from equipartition. The nucleus region of the M87 jet should have a viewing angle close to its first knot HST-1, i.e.  θ∼ 15°  , which favours the idea that M87 may be a misaligned blazar. This work provides some hints about the overall dynamics of this famous extragalactic jet.  相似文献

We show that the northern middle radio lobe of Cen A, an intriguing and much debated manifestation of radio lobe asymmetry, can be understood in terms of a direct interaction of the northern jet with a gaseous cloud associated with a stellar shell. This same basic mechanism was proposed earlier for the northern inner lobe, but new data allows a more detailed case to be made for the northern middle lobe. Although such an interaction can presently be demonstrated only for Cen A, the nearest radio galaxy, it is likely to be a fairly common occurrence and it provides an alternative to models invoking episodic nuclear activity, possibly accompanied with jet precession, for radio galaxies with multiple lobes and S-shapes. This proposed scenario may also play a key role in the origin of prominent radio galaxy morphological classes, such as the Wide-Angle-Tail sources and the Z-symmetric X-shaped radio sources. The strong tendency for radio lobes to be more distorted in double radio sources with jets that are in closer alignment with the optical major axis of the host elliptical galaxy can likewise be understood in terms of jet–shell interactions. In the frequent cases when jet activity is triggered by mergers of a large elliptical galaxy with a disk galaxy containing cold gas the impact of the gas associated with stellar shells upon the jets is likely to have significant manifestations.  相似文献
