A spectrum of Jupiter between 6000 and 12 000 cm? at high resolution (0.05 cm?) was recorded with a Michelson interferometer at Palomar Mountain in October 1974. An analysis of the R branch of the 3ν3CH4 band with the reflecting-layer model, taking into account the H2 absorption which occurs in the same spectral range, leads to a Lorentzian half-width of 0.09 ± 0.02 cm?1, a rotational temperature of 175 ± 10° K, and a CH4 abundance of order 52m atm. Five lines of the 13CH43ν3 band have been identified; a comparison with new laboratory spectra indicates that the 13CH4/12CH4 ratio in the Jupiter atmosphere is close to the terrestrial ratio.  相似文献

Using a method defined in a previous paper [M. Combes and T. Encrenaz, Icarus39 1–27 (1979)], we reestimated the C/H ratio in the atmospheres of Jupiter and Saturn by the measurements of the weak visible CH4 bands, the CH43 band, and the (3-0) and (4-0) quadrupole bands of H2. In the case of Jupiter we conclude that the C/H ratio is enriched by a factor ranging from 1.7 to 3.6 relative to the solar value. In the case of Saturn, our derived C/H value ranges from 1.2 to 3.2 times the solar value. The Jovian D/H ratio derived from this study is 1.2 × 10?5 < D/H < 3.1 × 10?5. The value derived for the D/H ratio on Saturn is not precise enough to be conclusive.  相似文献

The abundances of PH3, CH3D, and GeH4 are derived from the 2100- to 2250-cm?1 region of the Voyager 1 IRIS spectra. No evidence is seen for large-scale variations of the phosphine abundance over Jovian latitudes between ?30 and +30°. In the atmospheric regions corresponding to 170–200°K, the derived PH3/H2 value is (4.5 ± 1.5) × 10?7 or 0.75 ± 0.25 times the solar value. This result, compared with other PH3 determinations at 10 μm, suggests than the PH3/H2 ratio on Jupiter decreases with atmospheric pressure. In the 200–250°K region, we derive, within a factor of 2, CH3D/H2 and GeH4/H2 ratios of 2.0 × 10?7 and 1.0 × 10?9, respectively. Assuming a C/H value of 1.0 × 10?3, as derived from Voyager, our CH3D/H2 ratio implies a D/H ratio of 1.8 × 10?5, in reasonable agreement with the interstellar medium value.  相似文献

A major loss process for the metastable species, O+(2D), in the thermosphere is quenching by electrons
O+(2D) + e → O+(4S) + e
.To date no laboratory measurement exists for the rate coefficient of this reaction. Thermospheric models involving this process have thus depended on a theoretically calculated value for the rate coefficient and its variation with electron temperature. Earlier studies of the O+(2D) ion based on the Atmosphere Explorer data gathered near solar minimum, could not quantify this process. However, Atmosphere Explorer measurements made during 1978 exhibit electron densities that are significantly enhanced over those occurring in 1974, due to the large increases that have occurred in the solar extreme ultraviolet flux. Under such conditions, for altitudes ? 280 km, the electron quenching process becomes the major loss mechanism for O+(2D), and the chemistry of the N+2 ion, from which the O+(2D) density is deduced, simplifies to well determined processes. We are thus able to use the in situ satellite measurements made during 1978 to derive the electron quenching rate coefficient. The results confirm the absolute magnitude of the theoretical calculation of the rate coefficient, given by the analytical expression k(Te) = 7.8 × 10?8 (Te/300)?0.5cm3s?1. There is an indication of a stronger temperature dependence, but the agreement is within the error of measurement.  相似文献

The12C/13C isotope ratio in the interstellar medium and in stellar atmospheres is discussed and compared to the value found in the solar system and especially in comets. The cometary value (100) tends to be slightly above the terrestrial value and is definitively higher than that for interstellar molecular clouds (about 30 to 50).This result implies that comets are not of interstellar origin; that the original isotopic abundances of the primitive solar nebula has been preserved in the cometary material; and that due to an enrichment of the interstellar medium in13C, the12C/13C isotope ratio has decreased by a factor of about 2.5 since the formation of the solar system (i.e., during the past 4.5×109 years) — a result which is roughly in agreement with present theories of the chemical evolution of our Galaxy. The relatively high cometary carbon isotope ratio (as compared to the terrestrial value) indicates that some correction should be applied to the semi-empirical models describing the13C enrichment in the Galaxy.Paper dedicated to Professor Hannes Alfvén, on the occasion of his 70th birthday, 30 May, 1978.  相似文献

The atmospheric transmission window between 1850 and 2250 cm−1 in Jupiter's atmosphere was observed at a spectral resolution of 0.5 cm−1 from the Kuiper Airborne Observatory. The mole fractions of NH3, PH3, CH4, CH3D, CO, and GeH4 were derived for the 1- to 6-bar portion of Jupiter's troposphere using a spectrum synthesis program. Knowledge of the abundances of these gases below the visible clouds is necessary to calculate the global inventory of nitrogen, phosphorus, carbon, and deuterium, which, in turn, may constrain models of Jupiter's formation. The N/H ratio is 1.5 ± 0.2 times the value for the Sun's photosphere. The P/H ratio for the 5-bar level is between 1.0 and 1.6 times the solar abundance. The weak ν3ν4 hot band of CH4 was detected for the first time on Jupiter, thus providing a deep atmospheric value for C/H of 3.6 ± 1.2 times solar. The Jovian deuterium abundance is comparable to that measured in the interstellar medium (D/H = 1.2 ± 0.5) × 10−5. CO appears to be well mixed with a mole fraction of (1.0 ± 0.3) × 10−9. Multiple absorption features confirm that GeH4 is present on Jupiter with a mole fraction of (7.0−2.0+4.0) × 10−10. The observed abundances of CO, GeH4, and PH3 are consistent with models of convective transport from Jupiter's deep atmosphere.  相似文献

We report the detection of 13CH3D in Titan's stratosphere from Cassini/CIRS infrared spectra near 8.7 μm. Fitting simultaneously the ν6 bands of both 13CH3D and 12CH3D and the ν4 band of CH4, we derive a D/H ratio equal to and a 12C/13C ratio in deuterated methane of , consistent with that measured in normal methane.  相似文献

A hypothesis is considered in which the 36Ar found on Venus is of solar origin. This possibility is quantitatively discussed within the framework of present theories of planetary accumulation by sweep up of planetesimals under gas-free conditions. Solar wind implantation of 36Ar would take place by irradiation of accumulating material during the first ≈105 years of planetary growth, provided that the flux of solar wind was enhanced by a factor of ≈100 at that time. Enrichment of Venus in implanted gas would be a consequence of the irradiated material being initially confined to the innermost edge of the radially opaque circusolar planetesimal disk predicted by these theories. The observed atmospheric data require a Ne/Ar fractionation by a factor of ≈100 during the planetesimal stage. It is also necessary that there be very little mixing of irradiated planetesimals from the inner edge of disk to the distance (≈1 AU) at which the Earth formed. The hypothesis can be tested by measurement of the abundance of Kr and Xe in the Venus atmosphere. Venera data indicate a terrestrial 36Ar/Kr ratio, in disagreement with the solar wind hypothesis. In contrast, the Pioneer experiments find a lower limit to this ratio, well above the terrestrial value, that is compatible with the hypothesis. These experiments also show that Venus' 36Ar/Xe ratio does not correspond to the so-called “planetary” trapped inert gas composition. The inert of Venus could be related to result of admixture of gas with solar composition. The inert gas on Venus could be related to that found in enstatite chondrites.  相似文献

The atmospheric transmission window at 2.7 μm in Jupiter's atmosphere was observed at a spectral resolution of 0.1 cm?1 from the Kuiper Airborne Observatory. From analysis of the CH4 abundance (~80m-am) and the H2O abundance (<0.0125cm-am) it was determined that the penetration depth of solar flux at 2.7 μm is near the base of the NH3 cloud layer. The upper limit to H2O at 2.7 μm and other recent results suggest that photolytic reactions in Jupiter's lower troposphere may not be as significant as was previously thought. The search for H2S in Jupiter's atmosphere yielded an upper limit of ~0.1cm-am. The corresponding limit to the elemental abundance ratio [S]/[H] was ~1.7 × 10?8, about 10?3 times the solar value. Upon modeling the abundance and distribution of H2S in Jupiter's atmosphere it was concluded that, contrary to expectations, sulfur-bearing chromophores are not present in significant amounts in Jupiter's visible clouds. Rather, it appears that most of Jupiter's sulfur is locked up as NH4SH in a lower cloud layer. Alternatively, the global abundance of sulfur in Jupiter may be significantly depleted.  相似文献

Over the past 10 years the isotopic ratios of carbon (12C/13C) and nitrogen (14N/15N) have been determined for a dozen comets, bright enough to allow obtaining the required measurements from the ground. The ratios were derived from high-resolution spectra of the CN coma measured in the B2+−X2+ (0, 0) emission band around 387 nm. The observed comets belong to different dynamical classes, including dynamically new as well as long- and short-period comets from the Halley- and Jupiter-family. In some cases the comets could be observed at various heliocentric distances. All values determined for the carbon and nitrogen isotopic ratios were consistent within the error margin irrespective of the type of comet or the heliocentric distance at which it was observed. Our investigations resulted in average ratios of 12C/13C=91±21 and nitrogen 14N/15N=141±29. Whilst the value for the carbon isotopic ratio is in good agreement with the solar and terrestrial value of 89, the nitrogen isotopic ratio is very different from the telluric value of 272.  相似文献

We have used the spectra obtained by the Composite Infrared Spectrometer (CIRS) onboard the Cassini spacecraft to search for latitudinal variation in the 15N/14N ratio on Jupiter. We found no variations statistically significant given the observational and model uncertainties. The absence of latitudinal variations demonstrates that 15NH3 is not fractionated in Jupiter's atmosphere, and that the measured 15N/14N represents Jupiter's global value. Our mean value for the global jovian 15N/14N ratio of (2.22±0.52)×10−3 agrees with previous measurements made by Fouchet et al. (2000, Icarus 143, 223-243) and Owen et al. (2001, Astrophys. J. 553, L77-L79). We argue that the jovian isotopic 15N/14N ratio must represent the solar nitrogen isotopic composition. The solar 15N/14N ratio hence significantly differs from the terrestrial value: (15N/14N)=3.68×10−3. This supports the proposition that terrestrial nitrogen originates from a nitrogen reservoir isolated from the main nitrogen reservoir in the proto-solar nebula. The origin and carrier of this isolated reservoir are still unknown.  相似文献

Infrared spectral observations of Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn were made from 100 to 470 cm?1 using NASA's G. P. Kuiper Airborne Observatory. Taking Mars as a calibration source, we determined brightness temperatures of Jupiter and Saturn with approximately 5 cm?1 resolution. The data are used to determine the internal luminosities of the giant planets, for which more than 75% of the thermally emitted power is estimated to be in the measured bandpass: for Jupiter LJ = (8.0 ± 2.0) × 10?10L and for Saturn LS = (3.6 ± 0.9) × 10?10. The ratio R of thermally emitted power to solar power absorbed was estimated to be RJ = 1.6 ± 0.2, and RS = 2.7 ± 0.8 from the observations when both planets were near perihelion. The Jupiter spectrum clearly shows the presence of the rotational ammonia transitions which strongly influence the opacity at frequencies ?250 cm?1. Comparison of the data with spectra predicted from current models of Jupiter and Saturn permits inferences regarding the structure of the planetary atmospheres below the temperature inversion. In particular, an opacity source in addition to gaseous hydrogen and ammonia, such as ammonia ice crystals as suggested by Orton, may be necessary to explain the observed Jupiter spectrum in the vicinity of 250 cm?1.  相似文献

Uranus has an effective temperature close to the solar equilibrium value and undoubtedly a thermal inversion of at least 140 K at a pressure of ~3 dyncm?2. With the inversion and the thermal opacity provided by a HeH2 mixture in a ratio close to solar abundance, acceptable agreement can be achieved with the available infrared observations. The cause of the inversion is, however, uncertain. The use of the HeH2 opacity for Uranus is justified by the excellent agreement of the frequency variation of that opacity with the thermal spectrum of Jupiter.  相似文献

The dissociative recombination coefficients α for capture of electrons by H3+ and H5+ ions have been determined as a function of electron temperature Te using a microwave afterglow-mass spectrometer apparatus. At ion and neutral temperatures Tu+ = Tn = 240 K, the coefficient α (H3+) is found to vary slowly with Te at first, decreasing from 1.6 × 10?7 cm3/s at Te = 240 K to 1.2 × 10?7 cm3/s at Te = 500 K, thereafter falling as Te?1 over the range 500 K ? Te, ? 3000 K. These results, which have a ± 20% uncertainty, agree satisfactorily over the common energy range (0.03–0.36 eV) with the recombination cross sections determined in merged beam measurements by Auerbach et al. At T+ = Tn = 128 K, the coefficient α(H5+) is found to be (1.8 ± 0.3) × 10?6 [Te(K)/300]?0.69 cm3/s over the range 128 K ? Te ? 3000 K, with a more rapid decrease, as Te?1, between 3000 K and 5500 K. The implications of these results for modelling planetary atmospheres and interstellar clouds are briefly touched on.  相似文献

The 8.6-μm emission feature of Titan's infrared spectrum was analyzed using the Voyager temperature-pressure profile. Although both C3H8 and CH3D have bands at that wavelength, we show that CH3D dominates the observed emission on Titan. We derived a CH3D/CH4 mixing ratio using this band and the strong CH4 band at 7.7 μm. The corresponding D/H ratio is 4.2?1.5+2 × 10?4, neglecting deuterium fractionation with other molecules. The main uncertainty in this value comes from the continuum emission characteristics. The D/H ratio is apparently significantly enhanced on Titan with respect to published values for Saturn.  相似文献

We have calculated evolutionary and static models of Jupiter and Saturn with homogeneous solar composition mantles and dense cores of material consisting of solar abundances of SiO2, MgO, Fe, and Ni. Evolutionary sequences for Jupiter were calculated with cores of mass 2, 4, 6, and 8% of the Jovian mass. Evolutionary sequences for Saturn were calculated with cores of mass 16, 18, 20, and 22% of total mass. Two envelope mixtures, representative of the solar abundances were used: X (mass fraction of hydrogen) = 0.74, Y (mass fraction of helium) = 0.24 and X = 0.77 and Y = 0.21. For Jupiter, the observations of the temperature at 1 bar pressure (T1bar), radius and internal luminosity were best fit by evolutionary models with a core mass of ~6.5% and chemical composition of X = 0.77, Y = 0.21. The calculated cooling time for Jupiter is approximately 4.9 × 109 years, which is consistent, within our error bars, with the known age of the solar system. For Saturn, the observations of the radius, internal luminosity and T1BAR can be best fit by evolutionary models with a core mass of ~21% and chemical composition of X = 0.77, Y = 0.21. The cooling time calculated for Saturn is approximately 2.6 × 109 years, almost a factor 2 less than the present age of the solar system. Static models of Jupiter and Saturn were calculated for the above chemical compositions in order to investigate the sensitivity of the calculated gravitational moments, J2 and J4, to the mass of the dense core, T1BAR and hydrogen/helium ratio. We find for Jupiter that a model having a core mass of approximately 7% gives values of J2, J4, and T1BAR that are within observational limits, for the mixture X = 0.77, Y = 0.21. The static Jupiter models are completely consistent with the evolutionary results. For Saturn, the quantities J2, J4, and J6 determined from the static models with the most probable T1BAR of 140°K, using modeling procedures which result in consistent models for Jupiter, are considerably below the observed values.  相似文献

Measurements of the twilight enhancement of airglow emission from O+(2P) near 7325 Å reveal major changes which accompany geomagnetic activity, no significant distance between evening and morning and an increase in brightness paralleling the approach to solar maximum. The principal source for O+(2P) is direct photoionization from O(3P) but at low solar activity there appears to be a contribution from another source in early twilight which may be local photoelectron ionization into O+(2P). The geomagnetic and solar effects appear to reflect changes in the O and N2 density in the thermosphere; ground based twilight measurements of O+ emissions thus provide a simple means for monitoring thermospheric structure from 300 km to ~ 500 km at solar minimum and to ~600 km at solar maximum.  相似文献

We present the first reported measurements of the intensity of a “hotband” transition for the H3+ molecular ion in the northern auroral/polar region of Jupiter. This transition is identified as the R(3, 4+) line of the (2v2(l=0)→v2) hotband, with a wavelength of 3.94895 μm. This is the first time such a transition has been measured outside the laboratory, and the wavelength as measured on Jupiter is within the experimental accuracy of the lab measurement. This detection makes it possible to investigate H3+ transitions that simultaneously originate from different vibrational levels. We use the intensity ratio between this line and the Q(1, 0) fundamental transition to derive effective vibrational temperatures, column densities, and total emission parameters as a function of position across the auroral/polar region. Effective temperatures range from ∼900 to ∼1250 K; an increase in average temperature during our observing run of ∼100 K is noted. The derived temperatures are toward the high end or in excess of the auroral temperature range that has been reported in the literature to date. The relationship among emission intensity, temperature, and density is shown to be complex. This may reflect the nonthermalization of the vibrational levels at the gas densities prevailing in the jovian thermosphere. An alternative analysis allowing for this effect is presented. But this approach requires thermospheric temperatures to be ∼1500 K at the level that the majority of H3+ is being produced, higher than has previously been proposed.  相似文献

The Mariner 9 infrared spectrometer obtained data over a large part of Mars for almost a year beginning late in 1971. Mars' infrared emission spectrum was measured from 200 to 2000 cm?1 with an apodized resolution of 2.4 cm?1. No significant deviation from terrestrial ratios of carbon (12C/13C) or oxygen (16O/18O; 16O/17O) isotopes was observed on Mars. The 12C/13C isotopic ratio was found to be terrestrial with an uncertainty of 15%. Upper limits have been calculated for several minor constituents. With an effective noise equivalent radiance of 1.2 × 10?9 W cm?2 sr?1/cm?1, new upper limits in centimeter-atmospheres of 2 × 10?5 for C2H2, 4 × 10?3 for C2H4, 3 × 10?3 for C2H6, 2 × 10?4 for CH4, 1 × 10?3 for N2O, 1 × 10?4 for NO2, 4 × 10?5 for NH3, 1 × 10?3 for PH3, 7 × 10?4 for SO2, and 1 × 10?4 for OCS have been derived.  相似文献

We use vector spherical harmonics for a kinematic analysis of the proper motions of stars from the Hipparcos, Tycho-2, and UCAC3 catalogues in the northern and southern Galactic hemispheres. We have found that the statistically reliable values of the Ogorodnikov-Milne model parameters M 32 + and M 32 ? have different signs in different hemispheres. This is a consequence of the Galaxy??s rotational retardation with distance from the principal Galactic plane. Based on various samples of stars from the above catalogues, we have obtained the following estimate for the magnitude of the vertical gradient of Galactic rotation velocity in the solar neighborhoods: (20.1 ± 2.9) < |?V??/?z| < (49.2 ± 0.8) km s?1 kpc?1. Another result that is revealed by our analysis of the parameters M 13 ? and M 13 + in different Galactic hemispheres is that the vertical gradient of expansion velocity for the stellar system ?V R /? z is positive in the northern hemisphere and negative in the southern one. This suggests that the expansion velocity V R increases with distance fromthe Galactic plane. We show that both these gradients give rise to an apparent acceleration of the solar motion along the x and y axes of the rectangular Galactic coordinate system. Our analysis of the parameters M 21 ? and M 12 + shows no significant differences in both hemispheres and has allowed us to determine the Oort parameters, to estimate the Galactic rotation velocity and period in the solar neighborhood, and to calculate the ratio of the epicyclic frequency to the angular velocity of Galactic rotation in the solar neighborhood. The derived diagonal elements of the velocity field deformation tensor suggest that the orientation of the rectangular Galactic coordinate system in space must be determined by taking into account not only the geometrical factors but also the dynamical ones. All these results agree well with these quantities estimated over the entire sphere by various authors.  相似文献
