Bioassays were conducted with sea urchin and sand dollar sperm to determine the toxicity of chlorinated and unchlorinated sewage effluent and chlorinated and brominated seawater. The sperm cells were exposed to seawater dilutions of each toxicant for 5–15 min. The fertilisation of eggs served as the indicators of sperm viability. The effective concentrations which reduced fertilisation success by 50% (EC50) averaged 2·2 and 4·8% chlorinated and unchlorinated sewage in seawater, respectively. The sperm cells were extremely sensitive to chlorinated seawater at concentrations from 0·002 to 0·020 mg/litre total residual oxidant (TRO). Brominated seawater proved toxic to sperm in one test at 0·015 mg/litre TRO. Results of the sperm bioassays are compared with previous acute and chronic bioassays with fish.  相似文献

Behavioral responses to chemically dechlorinated seawater were studied using two species of marine fish associated with power plant discharge areas off Southern California. Opaleye (Girella nigricans) neither avoided nor were attracted to chlorinated seawater containing 0·1 mg/liter total residual oxidants (TRO) which had been dechlorinated using equimolar or excess sodium thiosulfate. Blue-banded goby (Lythrypnus dalli) did not avoid dechlorinated seawater initially containing 0·1 or 0·9–1·0 mg/liter TRO. Previously it has been shown that opaleye avoided chlorinated seawater with oxidant concentrations of 0·1 mg/liter and blue-banded gobies avoided 0·9–1·0 mg/liter TRO. Elimination of chlorine-produced oxidants by thiosulphate dechlorination resulted in 100% survival in both species. The toxicological implications of exposure to dechlorinated seawater are discussed.  相似文献

Behavioural responses to chlorinated seawater were studied in the laboratory using eight species of fish (topsmelt, Atherinops affinis [Ayres]; pile perch, Rhacochilus vacca [Girard]; señorita, Oxyjulis californica [Günther]; blacksmith, Chromis punctipinnis [Cooper]; northern anchovy, Engraulis mordax [Girard]; opaleye, Girella nigricans [Ayres]; bluebanded goby, Lythrypnus dalli [Gilbert] and mussel blenny, Hypsoblennius jenkinsi Jordan and Evermann) which occur near the Units 7 and 8 discharge of Southern California Edison's Redondo Beach Steam Generating Plant in King Harbor, California, USA. All species except Engraulis demonstrated prolonged avoidance of chlorinated quadrants of the behaviour chamber. The avoidance thresholds were species-specific and species totally avoided estimated total residual oxidant (TRO) concentrations from 0·094 to 0·456 mg/litre. Calculated significant avoidance thresholds averaged 0·066 mg/litre TRO; young Atherinops significantly avoided TRO concentrations as low as 0·028 mg/litre (p < 0·001). The highest avoidance thresholds were exhibited by sedentary species and were modified by the presence of cover inside the behaviour chamber. The avoidance response protected against mortality in all species except Lythrypnus and Engraulis.  相似文献

Amphipod larvae, Gammarus oceanicus, were exposed for 8 weeks to bis(tributyltin) oxide (TBTO) or tributyltin fluoride (TBTF), or for 5 weeks to leachates from tributyltin-containing antibiofouling paints. No larvae survived 8 weeks' exposure to 3 μg/litre TBTO or TBTF. Differential larval survival occurred during exposure to 0·3 gmg/litre of these same compounds. Paint leachates were shown to cause similar toxicity responses at comparable aqueous tributyltin concentrations. An examination of sublethal responses showed slight decreases in growth for larvae exposed to TBTO and to paint leachates, although responses at tributyltin levels below 1 μg/litre were not marked. Whole-animal oxygen consumption rates were not affected by low tributyltin exposure levels. While these studies demonstrate low level toxicity of tributyltins, effects on oxygen consumption and growth do not indicate a mode of action for these compounds.  相似文献

Exposure of the crab Cancer productus to chlorinated seawater resulted in alterations in haemolymph sodium and magnesium concentrations. At the highest chlorination levels, which approached the 96-h LC50, regulation of both ions was essentially abolished. Reciprocal changes in the sodium and magnesium levels suggested an effect on the activity of the bladder wall, which has been implicated in the regulation of haemolymph magnesium in crustaceans.Additionally, exposure to 1·19 μg/ml applied Cl (0·68 μg/ml TRO) for 96 h resulted in a fourfold increase in the ammonia excretion rate. Crabs also contributed considerable chlorine demand to the exposure seawater. Measurements of TRO in the inhalant seawater and water exiting the crabs' branchial chambers indicated a reduction in TRO equivalent to 57% of that initially present in the inhalant water (0·51 μg/ml TRO).Measurements of ammonia concentrations in the exposure water indicated that ammonia in seawater was consumed in reactions with oxidants. This was especially evident at higher levels of chlorination. At 0·58 μg/ml applied Cl and above, chlorination resulted in near disappearance of ammonia from the water.  相似文献

The acute toxicity of bromochlorinated estuarine water (ca. 20%) was determined for several estuarine organisms. The most sensitive species were oysters (Crassostrea virginica, larvae and juveniles) and copepods (Acartia tonsa) with 48-h LC50's of 0·10 to 0·21 mg BrCl/litre. Palaemonetes pugio was most tolerant with a 96-h LC50 of 0·70 mg BrCl/litre. The fish species tested (Menidia menidia, Brevoortia tyrannus and Leiostomus xanthurus) all had a 96-h LC50 of 0·21–0·23 mg BrCl/litre.The BrCl toxicity data are compared with Cl2 toxicity data for the same species. When the LC50's are expressed as equivalents per litre, BrCl is found to be two to four times less toxic than Cl2. The ranking of species in terms of sensitivity is the same for both disinfectants. Some data are provided concerning the decay rates of BrCl and Cl2 in estuarine water. BrCl was found to decay more rapidly than Cl2 at higher ammonia levels (0·25 mg NH4-N/litre). The question of chemical speciation is discussed with particular reference to the differential toxicities.  相似文献

This paper reports on a study of the toxicity of copper to three species of bivalve of commercial food value, Anadara granosa (Linnaeus), Meretrix casta, Deshayes and Crassostrea madrasensis (Preston) inhibiting the Vellar estuary at Porto Novo (southern India). The LC50 values were estimated as 60 μg Cu/litre for A. granosa, 72 μg Cu/litre for M. casta and 88 μg Cu/litre for C. madrasensis subjected to 96-h static bioassay tests after acclimation for a period of four days in the laboratory. The animals selected for study ranged in length from 29 to 44 mm in A. granosa, from 25 to 42 mm in M. casta and from 31 to 115 mm in C. madrasensis. The experiments were conducted at 25% salinity with pH 8·0 ± 0·1 at a temperature of 27°C ± 0·5°C. The revival rates of bivalves which survived exposure to the LC50 concentrations for the 96-h period (when marked and released in the natural environment) were 67% for A. granosa, and C. madrasensis and 83% for M. casta. The LT50 values for the three bivalves at different concentrations of the metal were also calculated.  相似文献

The oxygen consumption reflects the aerobic energy production of an animal. For fish eggs and larvae the normal oxygen consumption represents the optimal conditions for growth and development. Under the stress of environmental pollution gross deviation in oxygen uptake rate of the developing fish embryo may reflect metabolic disturbances and impede the development. Since the eggs and larvae of cod (Gadus morhua L.) are likely to be exposed to oil pollution from offshore installations in the North Sea we decided to investigate the effects of the water-soluble fraction (WSF) of North Sea crude oil on the oxygen consumption of cod eggs and larvae. The results showed that oxygen consumption of the larvae at the time of final yolk absorption (5–7 days post hatching at 5°C) is strongly suppressed by oil exposure at concentrations down to 50 ppb. No effect on the oxygen uptake, however, was found during the egg stage.  相似文献

This review surveys the pertinent literature on phenolics in the aquatic ecosystem. Approximately 2% of the total organics manufactured in the US were phenols. Of the total phenolics produced in the US, 96% were synthetic and 4% were naturally occurring. Synthetic phenols arise from coking of coal, gas works and oil refineries, chemical plants, pesticide plants, wood preserving plants and dye manufacturing plants. Natural phenolics occur from aquatic and terrestrial vegetation and much of this is released by the pulp and paper industry.Toxicity of phenolics has been studied on selected microbes (e.g. protozoa, yeast and bacteria), algae, duckweed, and numerous invertebrates and vertebrates. Depending on the organism tested, the acute toxicity of phenol varies from 6·5 to 1840 mg/litre phenol. For other phenolics toxicity ranges from 0·084 to 555 mg/litre. The toxicity of phenolics varies with the type, position and number of substitutions on the parent molecule. Environmental factors affect the toxicity of phenolics and these include photolytic action, microbial degradation, pH, water hardness and temperature. Based on limited data, toxicity of phenolics may be less in continuous flow tests than in their sensitivity to phenolics as does the presence of oxygen. A seasonal factor may also affect the sensitivity of various fish. Starvation and lack of suitable substrate for bottom fauna increases organism sensitivity to phenol. The source of test animals may affect their sensitivity to phenolics and this effect may be due to short-term physiological acclimation and genetic selection.Studies on the biological effects of phenolics are limited and varied. Fish development and embryo survival were not affected by phenol levels less than 25 mg/litre. Amphibian embryos were sensitive to 0·5 mg/litre phenol. Pentachlorophenols inhibited fish growth at levels down to 1·74, μg/litre.Exposure of fish to phenol in concentrations as low as 4 mg/litre caused haemorrhaging at the base of the fins. Two hour exposure to 6·5 mg/litre phenol caused disruption of blood vessel walls and gill epithelium. Oedema and blood infiltration was a common effect observed in most major tissues studied from fishes exposed to phenol. Phenol, at 12·5 mg/litre, reduces the levels of neurohormones in fish exposed for 10 days. The effects of pentachlorophenol on blood glucose and blood lactate levels, and in vivo and in vitro activity levels of seven liver enzymes of eels are discussed. Pentachlorophenol, at 1·8 μg/litre, decreased assimilation conversion efficiency in underyearling salmon. Phenol also affects immunoglobin levels, blood protein levels and tissue micro-element levels. Feeding rates are affected by phenolics. Phenolics affect oxygen consumption rates and the effect may be on uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation with a subsequent reduction of ATP formation. Many aspects of behaviour are affected by phenolics and the phases of ‘intoxication’ leading to death have been described for fish and invertebrates.Fish detoxify phenolics by forming conjugate glucuronides and sulphates. Body burdens of phenolics varied with exposure time and exposure concentration. When fish pre-exposed to phenol are transferred to clean water, body burdens drop up to 90% after three to four hours. Depuration rates for other phenolics took longer; up to 30 days for pentachlorophenol.Little research has been done on the cycling of phenol and phenolics (other than pesticides) in aquatic ecosystems. Microbial degradation will decompose phenolics rapidly if suitable bacteria are present. Other factors affecting the loss of phenolics from aquatic ecosystems include photolysis, adsorption and dilution. Phenol entering subterranean aquifers may not dilute or degrade very quickly. In one documented case well-water levels up to 200 mg/litre were measured 18 months after a spill.  相似文献

The chronic effects of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on ovary development, total hepatic lipids and plasma sex- and corticosteroid levels in female flounder (Platichthys flesus) were examined. Sexually mature feral female flounder were exposed via the diet to phenanthrene (0.5, 2.5 or 12.5 nmol/g food) or chrysene (0.4 nmol/g food) for 12 weeks, during the previtellogenic phase of the annual reproductive cycle. PAH exposure did not directly affect germ cell development since no structural and/or developmental differences were observed between control and exposed fish. On the contrary, all treatments resulted in altered plasma steroid levels. The most pronounced effect was the significant decrease in plasma 17β-estradiol to 19±11%, 27±7%, 63±20% and 61±12% in relation to control fish, respectively, in flounders exposed to 12.5, 2.5 or 0.5 nmol phenanthrene/g food and 0.4 nmol chrysene/g food. Impaired ovarian growth was not observed, most likely because experiments were ended before the period of vitellogenesis, even though a non-significant general decline in total hepatic lipids could be observed. Moreover, all exposed flounders, except fish fed with the highest amount of phenanthrene, showed a negative correlation between plasma 17β-estradiol and 17α-hydroxyprogesterone levels (r=−0.46). One possible explanation is that PAH action may be mediated by a specific inhibition of steroidogenic enzymes. These findings provide evidence that selected PAHs are antiestrogenic xenobiotics with the capability to impair female teleost reproductive function.  相似文献

The predatory fish community and their prey in the Norman Rivere estuary, Gulf of Carpentaria Australia, are compared with the communities of other tropical inshore areas, to investigate patterns of predation in tropical inshore areas particularly in relation to penaeid prawns. Abiotic factors (turbidity, freshwater input) and diversity of habitat types affect the composition of both prey and predator communities, resulting in large differences in the communities of tropical inshore waters. The stomach contents of 2059 predatory fish from the Norman River estuary were analysed over four sampling trips in the wet and dry seasons. The stomachs of 61% (1255 fish) of 54 species contained a total of 676·2 g (dry weight) of food, while 39% (804 fish) were empty. Teleosts were the main component of the diet (by dry weight) of 13 of the 22 species analysed, followed by annelids for two species. Five species had only teleosts in their stomachs. Most predator species ate benthic or bentho-pelagic prey, while three species—Rhizoprionodon taylori, Scomberoides commersonianusandLeptobrama mulleri—ate mainly pelagic prey. Although 19 species ate some penaeids, onlyPolydactylus sheridaniate little else. This species,Lates calcariferandEleutheronema tetradactylumate 94·5% of all the penaeid prey and 97·9% of all the commercially important penaeid prey recorded in the study. Penaeid predation indices (calculated from gillnet catch rates, proportion of penaeids in the diet and a consumption rate of 3% body weight per day) were 0·23 g of penaeid per net-metre per day forP. sheridani, 0·15 forL. calcariferand 0·03 forE. tetradactylum. Commercially important penaeid predation indices were 0·11, 0·13 and 0·01, respectively. These values are intermediate between those previously recorded for the main penaeid predators in other inshore areas of the Gulf of Carpentaria (Embley River estuary and Groote Eylandt).  相似文献

During nine field transplant tests in San Diego Bay (1987–1990), juvenile mussels were exposed to mean concentrations of tributyltin (TBT) in ambient seawater ranging from 2 to 530 ng liter−1 for 12 weeks under natural conditions. A total of 79 cages with 18 mussels each were monitored at 18 different sites. Growth and seawater TBT concentrations were measured weekly or on alternate weeks (biweekly). Mean growth rates ranged from 17 to 505 mg week−1 (0·2 to 2·5 mm week−1). Accumulation of TBT in mussel tissues was measured at the end of each 12-week test exposure and ranged from 0·1 to 3·2 μg g−1 TBT wet weight. The frequency of the measurements and the integration of chemical and biological measurements improved the accuracy of the assessment over more traditional approaches. Growth was significantly related to seawater and tissue TBT. The statistical relationships with growth effects were used to estimate chemical effect zones for TBT in San Diego Bay. Site-specific differences were distinguished by additional statistical analyses and consideration of environmental significance.  相似文献

Mortality of larval coon-stripe shrimp, Pandalus danae, was related to labile copper and the copper complexing capacity of sea water, as measured by differential pulse Anodic Stripping Voltammetry (ASV). In nominal treatments of control, 5 and 10μg/litre Cu which contained less than 1·0μg/litre ASV labile Cu, zoeal development was usually complete. In treatments of 20 and 50μg/litre Cu which contained more than 7·0μg/litre ASV labile Cu, most larvae died while in the first zoeal stage. ASV labile Cu was related to the copper complexing capacity of sea water. Copper toxicity at less than 1·0 μg/litre ASV labile Cu is indicated by moulting delay and apparent Cu accumulation in zoea of the 5 and 10μg/litre Cu nominal treatments.  相似文献

The interaction of selenium with mercury was studied in the shrimp Palaemon elegans. The release of 203HgCl2 (5·0 μg Hg per gramme body weight) from shrimp pretreated with selenium (SeO2 doses of 1·97, 3·95 and 7·90 μg Se per gramme fresh weight) was significantly decreased compared with the control group to which only 5·0 μg Hg/g had been administered. In the presence of HgCl2 (5·0 μg Hg per gramme fresh weight) the release of 75Se also diminished significantly at the higher stable Se pretreated dose (7·90 μg Se/g) while, at a lower selenium concentration, the release was not statistically different. Analyses for stable Hg and Se confirmed the decrease in rate of selenium loss in the presence of mercury which had been demonstrated with radiotracers.A dose of 7·9 μg Se per gramme fresh weight injected 12 h before exposure of the shrimp to the various mercuric chloride solutions did not produce a significant difference in the 24 h LC50 compared with the group not pretreated with selenium. However, during exposure to mercury at 3·8 mg/litre, the median lethal time (LT50) for the shrimp pretreated for 4 days with sublethal selenium (6·9 and 10·5 mg Se/litre) was delayed (19·2 and 33·2 h) compared with the group which was not pretreated. The results are discussed in relation to the role of selenium in the acutely toxic effects of inorganic mercury.  相似文献

The efficacy of sodium hexametaphosphate, when added to a formalin-Rose Bengal fixative solution, in improving the efficiency of benthic sample sorting by encouraging the disaggregation of silt-clay sediment has been investigated. Samples of estuarine mud (Mdφ = 6·1) from Damhead Creek, River Medway, were used for the analysis. A significant increase (23%; p < 0·01) in sieving efficiency was found in samples treated with concentrations of 1·24g/litre or more of sodium hexametaphosphate; treatments with higher concentrations than 1·24g/litre did not improve on this performance significantly. The use of 1·24g/litre sodium hexametaphosphate in an initial fixative/preservative solution is recommended as an economic and practical means of improving the efficiency of benthic sample sorting, without deleterious effects on the animal specimens in the sample.  相似文献

A worldwide literature survey of data on cadmium concentration in the soft tissue of the mussel, Mytilus spp., from 591 stations is presented. These stations are from 13 regions. Geometric means for the regions vary from 0·6 to 3·3 μg g−1 (dry weight) for the Barents Sea and the Northeastern Pacific coast, respectively. The averages of seven of these regions, for which reliable cadmium concentrations in seawater were available, were used to calculate a relationship between cadmium concentrations in seawater and mussel soft tissue. The relationship was highly significant: (Cd) mussel (μg g−1, dry weight) = 0·074 (Cd) water (ng litre−1) + 0·39 (P ≤ 0·0005).This model has been successfully applied in the context of the contamination of the Gironde estuary (France). It can also be used to define a water quality criterion for mussel maturing parks consistent with the quality criterion defined for shellfish for human consumption.  相似文献

Sediments and organisms were examined for concentrations of organic and metal contaminants from near the Los Angeles County (JWPCP) municipal outfall at Palos Verdes (PV) station 7-3, the Los Angeles City (Hyperion) municipal outfall at Santa Monica Bay (SMB) station 6-4 and reference station SMB 2–3 near Malibu Beach. Flows and mass emission rates of suspended solids, PCBs, Cd and Zn were similar at the two outfalls. Mass emission rate of copper was almost twice as high from Hyperion as from JWPCP, while mass emission rate of DDTs was an order or magnitude higher from JWPCP than from Hyperion.Surficial sediments at PV 7-3 were enriched in most contaminants relative to SMB 6-4 and relative to the mass emission rates of contaminants from the JGVPCP and Hyperion outfalls. Some of this enrichment could be accounted for by the greater accumulation of organic material, measured as total volatile solids, at PV 7-3 relative to SMB 6-4. Some might be accounted for by resurfacing of more contaminated historical deposits buried at PV 7-3. Some of the enrichment of DDTs relative to PCBs could be accounted for by the greater abundance of oxygenated metabolites of PCBs (PCBols) relative to DDTs (DDTols) in sediments. The degree of contamination of organisms by DDTs increased with proximity to PV 7-3 but contamination by PCBs was similar at PV 7-3 and SMB 6-4. DDT concentrations in fish livers ranged from 12 ± 4 ( ) mg/wet kg in longspine combfish from SMB 2–3 to 610 ± 105 (n = 5) mg/wet kg in Pacific sanddab from PV 7-3. DDT concentrations in fish gonads ranged from 0·003 ± 0·003 (n = 5) mg/wet kg in yellowchin sculpin from SMB 6-4 to 1.5 ± 6 (n = 3) mg/wet kg in Pacific sanddabs from PV 7-3. PCB concentrations in fish livers ranged from 1·2 ± 0·4 (n = 4) mg/wet kg in yellowchin sculpin from SMB 2–3 to 16 ± 3 (n = 6) in Pacific Sanddab from SMB 6-4. DDT and PCB concentrations in invertebrate hepatopancreas were only slightly lower than those in fish livers. DDTols and PCBoIs comprised an average of 91 % of the total of parent compounds and oxygenated metabolites in sediments and 66 % in livers and hepatopancreas. Trace metals were frequently decreased in livers and hepatopancreas from near outfalls even though they were highly elevated in sediments.Comparison of sediment and tissue chlorinated hydrocarbon data with that from Elliot and Commencement Bays, Puget Sound, indicated that none of the southern California coastal stations considered in this study were sufficiently lacking contamination to be considered as adequate control sites.  相似文献

Weight specific oxygen consumption (QO2) patterns of the amphipod, Gammarus sp. (acclimated to 5°, 15° and 25°C) and of juvenile blue crabs, Callinectes sapidus (15° and 25°C) were used to evaluate the potential effect of exposure to rapid temperature changes simulating once-through power plant pumped entrainment. Amphipods at all acclimation temperatures and blue crabs at 15°C responded to the temperature changes by increasing QO2 above pre-exposure levels after the thermal increase and then returning to pre-exposure levels. The response was judged to be a normal physiological compensation response, not a thermal stress response, as suggested by some investigators. Significant differences were found among seasonal QO2, patterns in both species; QO2, increased with increasing acclimation temperature. However, no seasonal stress effects were found as a result of exposure to the temperature changes. This implies that the effects of ΔT's up to 10°C from power plants of this design should have no significant impact on these organisms.  相似文献

Pacific herring (Clupea harengus pallasi) larvae were exposed either directly to the water-soluble fraction (WSF) of crude oil or indirectly via oil-contaminated prey (OCP) (Artemia salina) for <- 28 days, to determine the relative effects of diet and water as routes of contamination. Larvae were affected rapidly by 0·9 ppm WSF, which caused high larval mortality, reduced swimming ability and rapid reductions in feeding rates. Larval length was significantly reduced by 0·7 ppm WSF in 7 days and by 0·3 ppm WSF within 14 days. The WSF exposure also caused similar reductions in larval weights. Highly contaminated prey (6 ppm prey exposure) caused significant mortality, but surviving larvae appeared robust. The OCP did not affect swimming, feeding, or growth. Exposure of larvae was not significantly extended by OCP, which rapidly depurated WSF in clean water (98% in 1 day). Therefore, OCP is probably not an important source of low molecular weight petroleum contamination to larval fish in the marine environment.  相似文献

The effect of dissolved petroleum hydrocarbons in the environment on phytoplankton biomass measured as chlorophyll a was studied near the oil tanker route in the southern Bay of Bengal. In the transect from 5° N, 77° E to 5° N, 87° E the concentrations of dissolved petroleum hydrocarbons were negatively correlated with phytoplankton biomass, whereas in the 0° N, 87° E to 1° N, 79° E transect they were positively correlated with phytoplankton biomass. The mean petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations in the two transects were 12·12 ± 4·67 μg litre−1 and 11·23 ± 4·5 μg litre−1, respectively. It is surmised that the effect of dissolved petroleum hydrocarbons on phytoplankton biomass varies depending on the nature rather than the quantity of petroleum hydrocarbons present. Culture studies with unialgal Nitzschia sp. in seawater collected from selected stations in the study area as well as in artificial seawater spiked with the water-soluble petroleum hydrocarbon fraction of light Arabian Crude support this.  相似文献
