This study was based on the discrete fracture model to investigate the influence of fracture parameters on the solute transport in the fractured rocks of andesite in Lan-Yu island, Taiwan. In the simulation cases, the centers of fractures, fracture lengths and apertures were assumed to have Poisson’s distribution, negative exponential distribution and lognormal distribution, respectively. With the above assumptions, constructing the discrete fracture model became practicable. Using the mass-balance equation with specified boundary conditions, the flow field in the rock was solved. Then particles were released under the flow field. Monte Carlo method was used assuming that the amount of particles was proportional to the flow rates to get the particle accumulated percentage breakthrough curve and to estimate the dispersion coefficient. On the basis of the discrete fracture model, it was possible to evaluate the property of dispersion behavior of andesite in Lan-Yu Island with flow and transport mechanism. Properties of the dispersion behavior such as the relation between distance and traveling-time (ln〈r 2〉 and ln 〈t〉), anisotropic behavior, and the overall dispersion coefficient in a fracture network were characterized: the slope value of ln〈r 2〉 and ln〈t〉 was 1.64 an indication of non-Fickian dispersion, the particles dispersion along the flow (D11) was bigger than that perpendicular to the flow (D22), and the dispersion coefficient by this study was 0.91 m comparing the value 1 m from Sauty’s method.  相似文献

We present a fracture-only reservoir simulator for multiphase flow: the fracture geometry is modeled explicitly, while fluid movement between fracture and matrix is accommodated using empirical transfer functions. This is a hybrid between discrete fracture discrete matrix modeling where both the fracture and matrix are gridded and dual-porosity or dual-permeability simulation where both fracture and matrix continua are upscaled. The advantage of this approach is that the complex fracture geometry that controls the main flow paths is retained. The use of transfer functions, however, simplifies meshing and makes the simulation method considerably more efficient than discrete fracture discrete matrix models. The transfer functions accommodate capillary- and gravity-mediated flow between fracture and matrix and have been shown to be accurate for simple fracture geometries, capturing both the early- and late-time average behavior. We verify our simulator by comparing its predictions with simulation results where the fracture and matrix are explicitly modeled. We then show the utility of the approach by simulating multiphase flow in a geologically realistic fracture network. Waterflooding runs reveal the fraction of the fracture–matrix interface area that is infiltrated by water so that matrix imbibition can occur. The evolving fraction of the fracture–matrix interface area turns out to be an important characteristic of any particular fracture system to be used as a scaling parameter for capillary driven fracture–matrix transfer.  相似文献

This paper juxtaposes the actual areas of settlement and settlement activities of Chinese migrants in Brisbane’s southern suburbs since the mid-1980s, with the concomitant, ‘government planned’ construction of the city’s Chinatown as an ‘exotic,’ ‘ethnic,’ and ‘cosmopolitan’ landmark. It argues that while the latter, as with Chinatowns in other Australian and world cities, has continued to appropriate the symbols of so-called ‘Chineseness’ to sell the locale to non-Chinese, the former, in recalling the notion of ‘ethnoburbia,’ significantly evinces actual Chinese migrants’ agency and role in place-making. In the process, these migrants have not only established a local, ethnically meaningful environment, but also challenged the still current metonymic Western image of the Chinese as preferring life in ‘ethnic’ urban enclaves that had its origin from early Chinese settlement and fundamentally detached from the lives of other ethnic groups per se. Indeed greater recognition and comprehension of such locales may go a long way to illustrate that many Chinese living in Australia today do not fit the territorial, place-based identity often associated with them in the imagination of mainstream society.  相似文献

Summary This study reports the first documented occurrence of platinum group-minerals (PGM) in the vicinity of the Voisey’s Bay magmatic sulfide ore deposit. The PGM are present in a sulfide poor, hornblende gabbro dyke in the Southeast Extension Zone of the massive sulfide Ovoid deposit. The dyke has somewhat elevated concentrations of platinum-group elements (PGE) and gold (up to 1.95 g/t Pt, 1.41 g/t Pd, and 6.59 g/t Au), as well as Cu, Pb, Ag, Sn, Te, Bi and Sb. The PGM formed by magmatic processes and were little disturbed by subsequent infiltration of an externally-supplied hydrothermal fluid. To date, no similar PGM occurrences have been discovered in the Ovoid deposit itself. Whole rock REE patterns indicate that the dyke is geochemically related to the main conduit troctolites, which carry the bulk of the massive sulfide mineralization at Voisey’s Bay. The PGE mineralization is Pt- and Pd-rich, where the Pt and Pd occur predominantly as discrete PGM with minor Pd in solid solution in galena (average=1.8 ppm) and pentlandite (average=2 ppm). The discrete PGM are predominantly hosted by disseminated base-metal sulfides (bornite, chalcopyrite, and galena) (56 vol%) and are associated with other precious metal minerals (13 vol%) with only ∼3 vol% of the PGM hosted by silicate minerals. In whole rock samples, the PPGE (Pt, Pd, and Rh) correlate with abundances of chalcopyrite, bornite, galena, and other precious metal minerals (PMM), whereas the IPGE (Ir, Ru, and Rh) correlate with pyrrhotite and pentlandite. There are no correlations of the PGE with chlorine. Lead isotope compositions of galena associated with the PGE mineralization in the Southeast Extension Zone are broadly similar to those for galena in the Ovoid. The lead isotope compositions are much different from those in the Voisey’s Bay Syenite, which is a potential external hydrothermal fluid source. The observed Cu-rich, Pb-rich sulfide compositions and associated Pt-Pd-Au-Ag-Sn-Te-Bi-Sb assemblage in the dyke can be produced magmatically as late ISS differentiates (e.g., Prichard et al., 2004). Melting temperatures of the PGM are also consistent with a magmatic origin. Following crystallization of PGM from magmatic sulfide, an external REE-enriched hydrothermal fluid was introduced to the system, producing secondary amphibole and locally remobilizing the Pb and Sn from the sulfides hosting the PGM. The aim of the present study was to determine the stress field developed in a Brazilian disc under conditions closely approaching those of the actual test executed according to the standardized procedure suggested by the International Society for Rock Mechanics. Advantage is taken of a recently introduced analytic solution for a mixed fundamental contact problem where the disc and the jaw are considered as a system of two interacting elastic bodies. Using the outcomes of that study, the complex potentials method is employed here for the solution of a first fundamental problem for a Brazilian disc under a parabolic load distribution. Analytic full-field formulae for the components of the stress field developed in the disc are given. The solution is then applied for the case of a disc made from Dionysos marble. The results are compared to existing ones obtained from solutions adopting statically equivalent loads either in the form of distributed (uniform or sinusoidally) radial pressure acting along the actual contact rim or in the form of diametrically acting point (line) loads. While the stress field in the major part of the disc seems to be rather insensitive to the exact load application mode, critical differences are detected in the vicinity of the loaded arc of the disc. The solution is assessed according to the results of a short series of Brazilian disc tests with PMMA specimens. The agreement between theoretical predictions and experimental data is satisfactory. Finally, it is indicated that, as opposed to previous solutions, the stress field (even at the disc’s center) is a non-linear function of the externally applied load depending, among others, indirectly on the properties of the disc’s and jaw’s materials, the combination of which dictates the extent of the contact angle.  相似文献

The recent global scenario in the mineral sector may be characterized by rising competitiveness, increasing production costs and a slump in market price. This has pushed the mineral sector in general and that in the developing countries in particular to a situation where the industry has a limited capacity to sustain unproductive costs. This, more often than not, results in a situation where the industry fails to ensure environmental safeguards during and after mineral extraction. The situation is conspicuous in the Indian coal mining industry where more than 73% production comes from surface operations. India has an ambitious power augmentation projection for the coming 10 years. A phenomenal increase in coal production is proposed from the power grade coalfields in India. One of the most likely fall-outs of land degradation due to mining in these areas would be significant reduction of agricultural and other important land-uses. Currently, backfilling costs are perceived as prohibitive and abandonment of land is the easy way out. This study attempts to provide mine planners with a mathematical model that distributes generated overburden at defined disposal options while ensuring maximization of backfilled land area at minimum direct and economic costs. Optimization has been accomplished by linear programming (LP) for optimum distribution of each year’s generated overburden. Previous year’s disposal quantity outputs are processed as one set of the inputs to the LP model for generation of current year’s disposal output. From various geo-mining inputs, site constants of the LP constraints are calculated. Arrived value of economic vectors, which guide the programming statement, decides the optimal overburden distribution in defined options. The case example (with model test run) indicates that overburden distribution is significantly sensitive to coal seam gradient. The model has universal applicability to cyclic system (shovel–dumper combination) of opencast mining of stratified deposits.  相似文献

This paper is an excursion in non-representational thought. The primacy of movement charges this creative geography. Movement as sensation, thought, matter and memory crystallizes in ongoing assemblages (effects) we term selves and landscapes. This movement ontology is animated by a stream of thought running through Bergson, Deleuze, and Massumi, and by Ingold’s temporality of landscape. Memory is vital, as past (virtual) and present (actual) coexist, pushing forward in duration, the dynamic continuation of movement and sensation. David Lynch’s film, The Straight Story, offers dramatic illustration of the entanglement of movement, memory, and landscape. Landscape is emergent as relational lines of movement, an ongoing meshwork of practices and movement signatures. Alvin Straight’s paced journey through Iowa on a John Deere lawn mower during autumn harvest is a road to reminiscence and reconciliation, an American sublime. Lynch’s movement-images and soundscapes are sensorial undulations that illumine landscape as movement of incorporation, ‘dwelling’ in the moment to moment, geographies of care. The take-home message is that we are nothing more and nothing less than agents, next selves, ‘passing’ through. The collective trace of our ‘passings’ constitutes the making and remaking of place.

This paper shows the potential of gravity data to map a buried landfill bottom topography. To this end, a gravity inversion method is presented for estimating the landfill’s bottom depths at discrete points assuming a decrease of the density contrast with depth according to a hyperbolic law. The method’s efficiency was tested using synthetic data from simulated waste landfills, producing estimated bottom topographies very close to the true ones. The method’s potentiality has been further evaluated in applying it to the gravity data from the abandoned Thomas Farm Landfill site, Indiana, USA, whose bottom topography is known. The estimated topography showed close agreement with the known Thomas Farm Landfill’s bottom topography.  相似文献

The properties of giant radio sources (GRS’s) are considered with the aim of identifying conditions contributing to their formation, using data from the literature, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), and the APM catalog. The optical and radio properties of normal-size radio sources, (≤1 Mpc), are compared. The following conclusions are reached. (1) The fraction of objects with broad emission lines among GRS’s with high-excitation spectra is the same as for isotropic samples of radio sources; in the framework of the “unified scheme,” this testifies to an isotropic distribution of angles between the radio jets of GRS’s and the line of sight, i.e., GRS’s do not represent a population of objects whose radio jets are in the plane of the sky. (2) Giant radio sources do not differ from normal radio sources in the distributions of various asymmetry parameters for their extended radio components; in the unified scheme, the similarity of the asymmetry distributions for giant radio galaxies and giant radio quasars suggests that the origin of the asymmetry of their extended radio components is inhomogeneity of the external conditions. (3) The observed powers of the radio jets of giant and normal radio sources do not differ, making it unlikely that the large sizes of the GRS’s are due to this factor. (4) The richness and character of the environments of giant and normal radio sources do not differ: giant host galaxies are found in both isolated fields and in clusters of up to Abell class 1 in richness. This argues against the idea that a low density of the environment is the only origin of GRS’s. (5) The relatively large fraction of radio sources with two pairs of extended radio components (so-called double-double radio sources) among GRS’s testifies that the lifetimes of GRS’s are approximately an order of magnitude longer than those of normal radio sources.Given the equal spatial densities of nearby (z < 0.1) GRS’s and FR II radio sources with powers P 1.4 MHz > 1025 W/Hz, this indicates that ∼10% of FR II radio sources have lifetimes an order of magnitude longer, and evolve into GRS’s. (6) The small (∼0.1) ratio of the number of known GRS’s to the number of normal FR II radio sources, together with the observed spatial density of GRS’s at z ∼ 0.6, which is an order of magnitude lower than the predicted value, suggests that a considerable number of GRS’s were missed by surveys at z > 0.1, possibly due to observational selection effects because of their relatively low radio powers and radio surface brightnesses. (7) The absence of “double-double” giant quasars suggests that these objects have a shorter activity time scale than GRS’s. In an evolutionary scenario that is an alternative to the unified scheme uniting “radio loud” quasars and radio galaxies, radio quasars evolve with time into radio galaxies, and the observed relative number of radio quasars among the GRS’s (∼10%) can be interpreted as reflecting the existence of a long-lived population of “radio loud” quasars comprising ∼10% of all radio quasars, with such a population of long-lived radio quasars being the parent population for giant radio galaxies.  相似文献

Spatial fracture intensity (P 32, fracture area by volume) is an important characteristic of a jointed rock mass. Although it can hardly ever be measured, P 32 can be modeled based on available geological information such as spatial data of the fracture network. Flow in a mass composed of low-permeability hard rock is controlled by joints and fractures. In this article, models were developed from a geological data set of fractured andesite in LanYu Island (Taiwan) where a site is investigated for possible disposal of low-level and intermediate-level radionuclide waste. Three different types of conceptual models of spatial fracture intensity distribution were generated, an Enhanced Baecher’s model (EBM), a Levy–Lee Fractal model (LLFM) and a Nearest Neighborhood model (NNM). Modeling was conducted on a 10 × 10 × 10 m synthetic fractured block. Simulated flow was forced by a 1% hydraulic gradient between two vertical xz faces of the cube (from North to South) with other boundaries set to no-flow conditions. Resulting flow vectors are very sensitive to spatial fracture intensity (P 32). Flow velocity increases with higher fracture intensity (P 32). R-squared values of regression analysis for the variables velocity (V/V max) and fracture intensity (P 32) are 0.293, 0.353, and 0.408 in linear fit and 0.028, 0.08, and 0.084 in power fit. Higher R 2 values are positively linked with structural features but the relation between velocity and fracture intensity is non-linear. Possible flow channels are identified by stream-traces in the Levy–LeeFractal model.  相似文献

As a first approximation, the Earth is a sphere; as a second approximation, it may be considered an ellipsoid of revolution. The deviations of the actual Earth’s gravity field from the ellipsoidal “normal” field are so small that they can be understood to be linear. The splitting of the Earth’s gravity field into a “normal” and a remaining small “disturbing” field considerably simplifies the problem of its determination. Under the assumption of an ellipsoidal Earth model, high observational accuracy is achievable only if the deviation (deflection of the vertical) of the physical plumb line, to which measurements refer, from the ellipsoidal normal is not ignored. Hence, the determination of the disturbing potential from known deflections of the vertical is a central problem of physical geodesy. In this paper, we propose a new, well-promising method for modelling the disturbing potential locally from the deflections of the vertical. Essential tools are integral formulae on the sphere based on Green’s function with respect to the Beltrami operator. The determination of the disturbing potential from deflections of the vertical is formulated as a multiscale procedure involving scale-dependent regularized versions of the surface gradient of the Green function. The modelling process is based on a multiscale framework by use of locally supported surface curl-free vector wavelets.   相似文献

Communities are increasingly becoming development spaces where members are dynamic actors in fashioning issues of common interest. This paper explores women’s efforts at building social capital for communitarian ventures in selected rural localities of the Cameroon grasslands. It is argued that effective participation in raising livelihoods and infrastructure provisioning is facilitated through women’s social networks (njangis). The paper situates the gender concerns in community participation, rekindled through village development associations (VDAs) – crucial in needs identification, prioritization and execution of identified projects. Based on focused field studies in selected localities, it is established that due to their low social status, workloads and tight schedule, women remain on the sidelines of the leadership in VDAs. However, women’s in-cash or in-kind contribution remains crucial to the successful implementation of projects. Enhancing female participation hinges on efforts at erasing cultural stereotypes that project women as domestic workers, improving literacy, increased access to productive resources especially land, direct support to women’s agricultural activity and improved rural infrastructure (roads, water supply, and electricity) that is compromising women’s participation and empowerment drive.  相似文献

Sensitivity experiments are conducted for three cases of cyclones for investigating the impact of different vortex initialization schemes on the structure and track prediction of the cyclone using India Meteorological Department’s Limited Area Model. The surface wind and pressure profiles generated using Holland and Rankine initialization schemes differ from each other. These different generated profiles are compared with the actual data and the root mean square error (RMSE) was calculated between them. In case of the Holland vortex, ‘b’ is found to be equal to 1.5 and 2.0 respectively for two cases of very severe cyclonic storms in the Arabian Sea, namely 6–10 June 1998 and 16–20 May 1999 and 2.25 for the severe cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal. The ‘α’ parameter in Rankine’s scheme was found to be 0.5 for two cases and 0.4 for the third system. This shows that cyclones differ even if they attain the same intensity. The values of these parameters i.e. ‘b’ and ‘α’ are used for generating the synthetic wind data for individual cyclones and the same is used in the data assimilation system. The analysis and forecast generated for the above cases using the Holland scheme show that the simulated structure has characteristics closer to the actual storm; however, the Rankine scheme shows a weaker circulation. The mean track error for three cases in the Holland scheme is 93, 149, 257 and 307 km in 12-, 24-, 36- and 48-h forecast. The mean track errors for the Rankine scheme are 152, 274, 345 and 327 km, respectively, for the same period.  相似文献

Summary Published bathymetric, geophysical and geochemical data suggest the presence of a hotspot in the South Atlantic, between the Bode Verde and Ascension fracture zones, in the vicinity of Ascension Island which has been named Ascension hotspot. We provide here new isotope and trace element data on Grattan (a near-ridge seamount) basalts which suggest that this edifice was produced by the plume presently feeding the adjacent Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) segment and that it could represent the geochemical “missing end-member” described by Hanan et al. (1986) in the South Atlantic Ocean. Its isotopic signature differs slightly from that of Ascension Island and is more radiogenic in 208Pb. Trace element data are intermediate between those of MORB and characteristic OIB. We suggest that near Grattan seamount there exists a weak, perhaps intermittent, and slightly chemically heterogeneous plume.
Résumé De nombreuses données bathymétriques, géophysiques et géochimiques suggérent qu’il existe un point chaud dans l’Atlantique Sud entre les zones de fracture d’Ascencion et de Bode Verde, dans les environs de l’?le d’Ascencion et qui a été nommé point chaud d’Ascencion. Nous publions ici de nouvelles données géochimiques et isotopiques sur des basaltes du mont sous-marin Grattan qui est trés proche de la dorsale. Ces données montrent que cet édifice a été produit par le panache mantellique qui influence également la source des basaltes de la dorsale, et qu’il pourrait s’agir du “p?le manquant” décrit par Hanan et al. (1986) dans l’Atlantique Sud. Sa signature isotopique diffère légèrement de celle de l’?le d’Ascencion et présente notamment des valeurs plus radiogéniques en 208Pb. Les données en éléments en trace sont intermédiaires entre celle d’un MORB et d’un OIB caractéristique. Nous suggérons donc qu’il existe preès du mont sous-marin Grattan un panache mantellique faiblement actif, peut-être intermittent et chimiquement hétérogène.

The authors identify and describe the following global forces of nature driving the Earth’s climate: (1) solar radiation as a dominant external energy supplier to the Earth, (2) outgassing as a major supplier of gases to the World Ocean and the atmosphere, and, possibly, (3) microbial activities generating and consuming atmospheric gases at the interface of lithosphere and atmosphere. The writers provide quantitative estimates of the scope and extent of their corresponding effects on the Earth’s climate. Quantitative comparison of the scope and extent of the forces of nature and anthropogenic influences on the Earth’s climate is especially important at the time of broad-scale public debates on current global warming. A series of large-scale glaciations occurring in the second half of the Late Riphean and Vendian are referred to as the African Glacial Era (Glacioera), which was separated from the preceding Huronian Glacioera by an interglacial of 1.5 Gyr. Six large discrete glacial events (glacioperiods) repeating each 30–50 Myr, occurred during the African Glacioera. The following glacioperiods (in geochronological succession) are recognized: Kaigas, Rapitan, Sturtian, Marinoan, Gaskiers, and Baykonur. Most glacioperiods included several discrete glaciation episodes. Glaciations were accompanied by repeated biosphere change and crises. The dynamic coevolution of climate and biosphere at the end of the Proterozoic facilitated an accelerated development of Earth’s biota, which culminated in the appearance and divergence of multicellular and skeletal fauna. The African Glacioera terminated the Proterozoic and was the time when the Phanerozoic climatic system and the biosphere were forming on the Earth.  相似文献

Analysis of fisheries-independent data for Galveston Bay, Texas, USA, since 1985 shows eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) frequently demonstrate increased abundance of market-sized oysters 1 to 2 years after years with increased freshwater inflow and decreased salinity. These analyses are compared to Turner’s (Estuaries and Coasts 29:345–352, 2006) study using 3-year running averages of oyster commercial harvest since 1950 in Galveston Bay. Turner’s results indicated an inverse relationship between freshwater inflow and commercial harvest with low harvest during years of high inflow and increased harvest during low flow years. Oyster populations may experience mass mortalities during extended periods of high inflow when low salinities are sustained. Conversely, oyster populations may be decimated during prolonged episodes of low flow when conditions favor oyster predators, parasites, and diseases with higher salinity optima. Turner’s (Estuaries and Coasts 29:345–352, 2006) analysis was motivated by a proposed project in a basin with abundant freshwater where the goal of the project was to substantially increase freshwater flow to the estuary in order to increase oyster harvest. We have the opposite concern that oysters will be harmed by projects that reduce flow, increase salinity, and increase the duration of higher salinity periods in a basin with increasing demand for limited freshwater. Turner’s study and our analysis reflect different aspects of the complex, important relationships between freshwater inflow, salinity, and oysters.  相似文献

Hurricane evacuations in the United States are costly, chaotic, and sometimes unnecessary. Many coastal residents consider evacuation after viewing a forecasted graphic of where the storm is anticipated to make landfall. During the evacuation process, hurricane tracks commonly deviate from the forecasted landfall track and many evacuees may not pay attention to these track deviations after evacuating. Frequently, a disconnect may occur between the actual landfall track, the official forecasted track, and the perceived track of each individual as they made their evacuation decision. Specifically for evacuees, a shift in track may decrease the hazards associated with a landfalling hurricane since evacuees perceive their threat level to be high at the time of evacuation. Using survey data gathered during the evacuation from Hurricane Gustav (2008) in coastal Louisiana (USA), we calculated a type of Z-score to measure the distance error between each evacuee’s perceived landfall location and the actual landfall location from each evacuee’s home zip code. Results indicate a personal landfall bias in the direction of home zip code for evacuees of three metropolitan regions. Evacuees from the greater New Orleans area displayed the highest error, followed by evacuees from greater Lafayette. Furthermore, we validate the authenticity of the previous results by employing two additional methods of error assessment. A large regional error score might possibly be a predictor of evacuation complacency for a future hurricane of similar magnitude, although there are many other variables that must be considered.  相似文献

The Moon-to-Earth low energy trajectories of ‘detour’ type are found and studied within the frame of the Moon-Earth-Sun-particle system. These trajectories use a passive flight to the Earth from an initial elliptic selenocentric orbit with a high aposelenium. The Earth perturbation increases the particle selenocentric energy from a negative value first to zero and then to a positive one and therefore leads to a passive escape of the particle motion from the Moon attraction near the translunar libration pointL 2. This results in the particle flight to a distance of about 1.5 million km from the Earth where the Sun gravitation decreases the particle orbit perigee distance to a small value that leads to the particle approaching the Earth vicinity in about 100 days of the flight. A set of the Moon-to-Earth ‘detour’ trajectories is defined numerically. Characteristics of these trajectories are presented. The ‘detour’ trajectories give essential economy of energy (about 150 m/s in Delta V) relative to the usual ones.  相似文献

This paper advocates the use of Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological theory as a framework to analyse resilience at diverse scales. Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological theory can be employed to (a) benchmark social resilience, (b) target the priority interventions required and (c) measure progress arising from these interventions to enhance resilience to natural disasters. First, the paper explores resilience to natural disasters in the context of climatic change as building resilience is seen as a way to mitigate impacts of natural disasters. Second, concepts of resilience are systematically examined and documented, outlining resilience as a trait and resilience as a process. Third, issues arising in relation to the measurement of resilience are discussed. Fourth, Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological systems theory is described and proffered to model and assess resilience at different scales. Fifth, studies are described which have supported the use of the bioecological systems theory for the study of resilience. Sixth, an example of the use of Bronfenbrenner’s theory is offered and the paper concludes with suggestions for future research using Bronfenbrenner’s theory.  相似文献
