We have made VLA radio total intensity and polarisation observations in the A, B and C configurations at 1665, 1435, 1365 and 1295 MHz and in the B, C and D configurations at 8465 and 8415 MHz to study the environment of the powerful radio galaxy Hercules A. We have also made ROSAT PSPC and HRI X-ray observations to study the intracluster gas in the Hercules A cluster. We have mapped the Faraday rotation field with high resolution (1.′′42.5 h−1100 kpc for q0=0), and combined this with the X-ray data on the gas distribution in order to map the magnetic field of the cluster. We have found that Hercules A exhibits a strong Laing-Garrington effect: the western side of the radio emission is more depolarised than the eastern side. The X-ray observations have revealed an extended X-ray emission elongated along the radio galaxy axis and a weak nuclear component. The Hercules A cluster is a cooling flow cluster, which appears isothermal at large radii. Comparing the Faraday dispersion profile with the X-ray estimated density profile, we found that the magnetic field is decreasing with radius and we have estimated a central value of 3B0 (μG) 9. The estimated core electron density of n06.6×103 m−3 reveals a dense environment in which Hercules A is situated.  相似文献

M 1–92 is a very well studied bipolar pPN that can be considered an archetype of this type of sources; it shows a clear axial symmetry, along with the kinematics characteristic of this class of envelopes around post-AGB stars. We performed sub-arcsecond resolution observations of the J=2–1 rotational line of 13CO in M 1–92 with the new extended configurations of the IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer, for studying the morphology and velocity field of the molecular gas better in the nebula, particularly in its central parts. We found that the equatorial structure dividing the two lobes is a thin flat disk, which expands radially with a velocity proportional to the distance to the central stellar system. The kinetic age of this equatorial flow is very similar to that measured in the two lobes, suggesting that the whole structure was formed as a result of a single event some 1200 yr ago, after which the nebula reached an expansion velocity field with axial symmetry. The small widths and velocity dispersion in the gas forming the lobe walls confirm that the acceleration responsible for the nebular shape could not last more than 100–120 yr. In view of the similarity to η Car, we speculate on the possibility that the whole nebula was formed as a result of a magneto-rotational explosion in a common-envelope system. The study of the possible importance of this mechanism in the context of global PNe and pPNe reshaping should be one on the fields in which future ALMA observations will make a crucial contribution. Values of the level intervals in the ground configurations 2s 2 2p 2, 2s 2 2p 3 and 2s 2 2p 4 have been critically compiled from laboratory observations and from observations of nebular and coronal forbidden transitions. The data are represented within experimental errors by means of semi-empirical extrapolation formulae which contain from 3 to 5 adjusted parameters. The results provide means for checking laboratory and astrophysical identifications and measurements. Tables of best level values are given for the configurations concerned.  相似文献

Recent observations have indicated that magnetic field elements are distributed on the Sun in fractal patterns with dimension D < 2. We suggest that the transport of magnetic field elements across the solar surface should be treated as diffusion on a fractal geometry. We review a semi-analytical, theoretical treatment of fractal diffusion. Comparison with observations of small-scale motions of solar magnetic flux concentrations indicates that fractal diffusion may be taking place with dimension in the range 1.3 to 1.8. It is shown that, compared to the predictions that would be made for two-dimensional diffusion, fractal diffusion in this range would lead to an increased level of in situ flux cancellation in decaying active regions by 7% to 35%. Other work in specialities outside of solar physics may be useful in explaining solar magnetic phenomena.  相似文献

A new class of plane-symmetric inhomogeneous cosmological models of perfect fluid distribution with electro-magnetic field based on Lyra’s geometry is obtained by considering a time dependent displacement field. The source of the magnetic field is due to an electric current produced along the z-axis. Only F 12 is a non-vanishing component of electromagnetic field tensor. To get the deterministic solutions, the free gravitational field is assumed to be of Petrov type-II non-degenerate. It has been found that the displacement vector β(t) behaves like cosmological term Λ which is consistent with the recent observations of type Ia supernovae. It is also observed that β(t) affects entropy. Some geometric and physical behaviour of the models are also discussed in presence of magnetic field.   相似文献

Sunspots absorb and scatter incident p modes. The dominant mechanism is still uncertain. One possibility, mode conversion to slow magneto-acoustic waves, has been shown to yield results in agreement with observations for the f mode only. Absorption of p modes in simple vertical magnetic field models is too weak by an order of magnitude or more. Here we report on numerical calculations of p modes encountering a simple sunspot model with field which spreads with height. It is found that p-mode absorption is greatly enhanced by field spread, to a level consistent with observations, and it appears that it occurs preferentially in the outer regions of the spot, in line with recent results from acoustic holography.  相似文献

In this paper we review the evolutionary paths that lead to the different types of planetary nebulae nuclei, including hydrogen and helium-burning central stars. Starting from the empirical definition of WR central stars, based on stellar spectra, we examine the theoretical work produced to account for the observed configurations. Then we discuss the constraints provided by recent galactic and extragalactic observations, and finally state the possible developments in this field to achieve a better understanding of the subject.  相似文献

This paper deals with the question of whether elliptical galaxies can be considered as equilibrium systems (i.e., the gravitational+centrifugal potential is constant on the external surface). We find that equilibrium models such as Emden-Chandrasekhar polytropes and Roche polytropes withn=0 can account for the main part of observations relative to the ratio of maximum rotational velocity to central velocity dispersion in, elliptical systems. More complex models involving, for example, massive halos could lead to a more complete agreement. Models that are a good fit to the observed data are characterized by an inner component (where most of the mass is concentrated) and a low-density outer component. A comparison is performed between some theoretical density distributions and the density distribution observed by Younget al. (1978) in NGC 4473, but a number of limitations must be adopted. Alternative models, such as triaxial oblate non-equilibrium configurations with coaxial shells, involve a number of problems which are briefly discussed. We conclude that spheroidal oblate models describing elliptical glaxies cannot be ruled out until new analyses relative to more refined theoretical equilibrium models (involving, for example, massive halos) and more detailed observations are performed.  相似文献

An analysis is made of the Martens-Kuin filament eruption model in relation to observations of coronal mass ejections (CMEs). The field lines of this model are plotted in the vacuum or infinite resistivity approximation with two background fields. The first is the dipole background field of the model and the second is the potential streamer model of Low. The assumption is made that magnetic field evolution dominates compression or other effects which is appropriate for a low- coronal plasma. The Martens-Kuin model predicts that, as the filament erupts, the overlying coronal magnetic field lines rise in a manner inconsistent with observations of CMEs associated with eruptive filaments. Initially, the bright arc of a CME broadens in time much more slowly than the dark cavity between it and the filament, whereas in the model they broaden at the same rate or the bright arc broadens more rapidly than the dark cavity, depending on the background field. Thus, this model and, by generalization the whole class of so-called Kuperus-Raadu configurations in which a neutral point occurs below the filament, are of questionable utility for CME modeling. An alternate case is considered in which the directions of currents in the Martens-Kuin model are reversed resulting in a so-called normal polarity configuration of the filament magnetic field. In this case, a neutral line occurs above the current-carrying filament. The background field lines now distort to support the filament and help eject it. While the vacuum field results make this configuration appear very promising, a full two- or more-dimensional MHD simulation is required to properly analyze the dynamics resulting from this configuration.Presently NRC Senior Research Associate at NOAA, Space Environment Laboratory, Boulder, Colorado, U.S.A.At the NASA National Space Data Center.  相似文献

Future radio observations with the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) and its precursors will be sensitive to trace spiral galaxies and their magnetic field configurations up to redshift z ≈ 3. We suggest an evolutionary model for the magnetic configuration in star‐forming disk galaxies and simulate the magnetic field distribution, the total and polarized synchrotron emission, and the Faraday rotation measures for disk galaxies at z ≲ 3. Since details of dynamo action in young galaxies are quite uncertain, we model the dynamo action heuristically relying only on well‐established ideas of the form and evolution of magnetic fields produced by the mean‐field dynamo in a thin disk. We assume a small‐scale seed field which is then amplified by the small‐scale turbulent dynamo up to energy equipartition with kinetic energy of turbulence. The large‐scale galactic dynamo starts from seed fields of 100 pc and an averaged regular field strength of 0.02 μG, which then evolves to a “spotty” magnetic field configuration in about 0.8 Gyr with scales of about one kpc and an averaged regular field strength of 0.6 μG. The evolution of these magnetic spots is simulated under the influence of star formation, dynamo action, stretching by differential rotation of the disk, and turbulent diffusion. The evolution of the regular magnetic field in a disk of a spiral galaxy, as well as the expected total intensity, linear polarization and Faraday rotation are simulated in the rest frame of a galaxy at 5GHz and 150 MHz and in the rest frame of the observer at 150 MHz. We present the corresponding maps for several epochs after disk formation. Dynamo theory predicts the generation of large‐scale coherent field patterns (“modes”). The timescale of this process is comparable to that of the galaxy age. Many galaxies are expected not to host fully coherent fields at the present epoch, especially those which suffered from major mergers or interactions with other galaxies. A comparison of our predictions with existing observations of spiral galaxies is given and discussed (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

It was shown by Zheleznyakov and Zlotnik (1980a, b) that in complex configurations of solar magnetic fields (in hot loops above the active centres, in neutral current sheets in the preflare phase, in hot X-ray kernels in the initial flare phase) a system of cyclotron lines in the spectrum of microwave radiation is likely to be formed. Such a line was obtained by Willson (1985) in the VLA observations at harmonics of the electron gyrofrequency. This communication interprets these observations on the basis of an active region model in which thermal cyclotron radiation is produced by hot plasma filling the magnetic tube in the corona above a group of spots. In this model the frequency of the recorded 1658 MHz line corresponds to the third harmonic of electron gyrofrequency, which yields the magnetic field (196 ± 4) G along the magnetic tube axis. The linewidth f/f 0.1 is determined by the 10% inhomogeneity of the magnetic field over the cross-section of the tube; the line profile indicates the kinetic temperature distribution of electrons over the tube cross-section with the maximum value 4 × 106 K. Analysis shows that study of cyclotron lines can serve as an efficient tool for diagnostics of magnetic fields and plasma in the solar active regions and flares.  相似文献

We consider two types of streamer structures observed in the solar atmosphere. Structures of the first type are medium-scale configurations with scale lengths comparable to the scale height in the corona, kT/mg = 100 thousand km, which appear as characteristic plasma structures in the shape of a dome surrounding the active region with thin streamers emanating from its top. In configurations of this type, gravity plays no decisive role in the mass distribution. The plasma density is constant on magnetic surfaces. Accordingly, the structure of the configurations is defined by the condition ψ = const, where ψ is the flux function of the magnetic field. Structures of the second type are large-scale configurations (coronal helmets, loops, and streamers), which differ from the above structures in that their scale lengths exceed the scale height in the corona. For them, gravity plays a decisive role; as a result, instead of the magnetic surfaces, the determining surface is BgradΦ = 0. We constructed three-dimensional images of these structures. Some of the spatial curves called “visible contours” of the Br = 0 surface are shown to be brightest in the corona. We assume that the helmet boundaries and polar plumes are such curves.  相似文献

A plot of frequency separation in fine structure in solar continuum radio bursts against emission frequency indicates that the frequency structure cannot represent local proton plasma frequency modulation. However, the observations are consistent with the interpretation of the frequency structure as harmonics of the local electron cyclotron frequency and lead to reasonable estimates of the ratio between magnetic and kinetic pressures in stable coronal magnetic field configurations producing continuum radio sources.  相似文献

It has been hypothesized that the sustained narrowness observed in the asymptotic cylindrical region of bipolar outflows from Young Stellar Objects (YSO) indicates that these jets are magnetically collimated. The j z × B ϕ force observed in z-pinch plasmas is a possible explanation for these observations. However, z-pinch plasmas are subject to current driven instabilities (CDI). The interest in using z-pinches for controlled nuclear fusion has lead to an extensive theory of the stability of magnetically confined plasmas. Analytical, numerical, and experimental evidence from this field suggest that sheared flow in magnetized plasmas can reduce the growth rates of the sausage and kink instabilities. Here we propose the hypothesis that sheared helical flow can exert a similar stabilizing influence on CDI in YSO jets.  相似文献

The present paper aims to investigate the modelling of real galaxies—at least as a zeroth order approximation—in such a way that rotation can be effective in determinating their intrinsic shape. The connection between the presence of isotropy in the pressure (or equivalently in the peculiar velocity) and observed gradients of metal content in most galaxies is briefly discussed, next solid-body rotating EC polytropes are proposed as acceptable models and the limits of this approach are considered. Appropriate estimates of both the theoretical ratio of some characteristic projected rotational velocity to some characteristic projected peculiar velocity,V/, and the apparent ellipticity,ê *, are calculated for the whole range of axis orientations, then the behaviour ofV/ vsê * is compared with observations. We find that real galaxies seem to display according to two distinct sequences; a main fraction of bright ellipticals may be reproduced by both axisymmetric configurations with all degrees of central condensation and triaxial configurations with lower degree of central condensation, while the remaining bright ellipticals, SA and SB bulges and ellipticals fainter thanM B =–20.8 are seen to be fitted by axisymmetric configurations with lower degree of central condensation only. Some implications of such results are also reported and discussed. Finally, using qualitative considerations we show that solid-body rotating EC polytropes may lead to a naive model of galactic evolution, which enables both to reconcile observed gradients of metal content with the trend exibited byV/ vsê *, and to simulate—at least as a zeroth order approximation—the morphological sequence of real galaxies.  相似文献

τ Bootis is a late F‐type main sequence star orbited by a Hot Jupiter. During the last years spectropolarimetric observations led to the hypothesis that this star may host a global magnetic field that switches its polarity once per year, indicating a very short activity cycle of only one year duration. In our ongoing observational campaign, we have collected several X‐ray observations with XMM‐Newton and optical spectra with TRES/FLWO in Arizona to characterize τ Boo's corona and chromosphere over the course of the supposed one‐year cycle. Contrary to the spectropolarimetric reconstructions, our observations do not show indications for a short activity cycle (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

In several nearby LL* early‐type galaxies, recent observations at large radii have shown indications of a lack of dark matter, substantially at odds with the prediction from the Cold Dark Matter (CDM) hierarchical merger models. Here we discuss a pilot observational project for the study of the internal kinematical and dynamical properties of this remarkable sample of galaxies. Using the VIMOS‐IFU in its high spectral resolution mode, it would be possible to investigate the regions up to ∼1.2 Re, taking advantage of the much larger field of view and telescope diameter. This will allow to disclose the presence of any kinematical substructures which could affect the conclusion on the mass modeling and definitely clarify the inner structure of this particular class of early‐type galaxies. Solar H-flares now reported with their distinctive visual features have been statistically examined for a period of about eight years in relation to their different characteristics, flare-burst and flare-sunspot association. Important results obtained are: (i) Integrated intensity changes from the highest to the lowest values in the order F, H, E, and D flare type, whereas, impulsiveness in the order H, F, E, and D type, (ii) Flare-burst association is frequency dependent and is highest and lowest for H and D types respectively in almost all the frequencies, (iii) Most of the flares of D, E, and F types are associated with sunspots of p , p , and configurations having field strength 1500–2500 G, while that of H type with p and configurations having field strength 1000–2000 G.  相似文献

We investigate the formation and support of solar prominences in a quadrupolar magnetic configuration. The prominence is modeled as a current sheet with mass in equilibrium in a two-dimensional field. The model possesses an important property which is now thought to be necessary, namely that the prominence forms within the dip, rather than the dip being created by the prominence. The approach of two bipolar regions of the same sign gives a natural way to form a dip in the magnetic field in a horizontal band above the photospheric polarity inversion line. As the approach proceeds, the height of the dip region decreases but, in agreement with observations, a corridor, free of significant magnetic field, is needed in order to obtain a dip at low heights.Support is achieved locally just as for normal-polarity configurations, so the model avoids the strong self-pinching effect of several inverse-polarity configurations (such as the Kuperus and Raadu model). The role of the strong field component along the prominence axis, which is here modelled by a uniform field in that direction, may well be to provide the necessary thermal properties for prominence formation. The model thus has several attractive features which make it credible for inverse polarity prominences: (i) both the dip and the inverse orientation are naturally present; (ii) prominence formation is by converging rather than shearing motions, in agreement with observations; converging photospheric motions induce a horizontal upward motion in the filament; (iii) the orientation of the axial field, opposite to what is expected from differential rotation, is naturally accounted for; (iv) the observed relation between chromospheric and prominence magnetic field strengths is naturally reproduced; (v) the field configuration is more complex than a simple bipole, in agreement with observations.  相似文献

Observations and analyses of two similar eruptive prominences on the north-east limb observed on 1980 April 27 at 0231 and 0517 UT, which are associated with the Boulder active region No. 2416 are presented. Both the eruptive prominences gave rise to white-light coronal transients as observed by C/P experiment of High Altitude Observatory on the Solar Maximum Mission. Type II and moving type IV radio bursts are reported in association with the first Hα eruptive prominence at 0231 UT. Both the Hα eruptive prominences showed pulse activity with a quasi-periodicity of about 2–4 min. We estimate a magnetic field in the eruptive prominence of about 100 G and a build-up rate ∼ 1026 ergs-1. The high build-up rate indicates that the shearing of the photospheric magnetic field, which fed the energy into the filament, was rapid. It is proposed that fast-moving Hα features must have initiated the observed coronal transients. From Hα, type II and coronal-transient observations, we estimate a magnetic field of 2.8 G at 1.9R⊙ from the disc centre, which agrees well with the earlier results.  相似文献
