The short duration (T 90 < 2 s) gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) detected in the SPI-ACS experiment onboard the INTEGRAL observatory are investigated. Averaged light curves have been constructed for various groups of events, including short GRBs and unidentified short events. Extended emission has been found in the averaged light curves of both short GRBs and unidentified short events. It is shown that the fraction of the short GRBs in the total number of SPI-ACS GRBs can range from 30 to 45%, which is considerably larger than has been thought previously.  相似文献

We analyze short-duration gamma-ray bursts (T 90<2 s) recorded in the SPI-ACS experiment of the INTEGRAL observatory. We found an extended emission in the averaged light curve of both short-duration gamma-ray bursts and unidentified short-duration events. We show that the fraction of short-duration gamma-ray bursts among all the gamma-ray bursts recorded in the SPI-ACS experiment may be as high as 30 to 45%. We find the fraction of short gamma-ray bursts to augment while increasing the lower energy threshold. We report evidence for the absence of the class of very short gamma-ray bursts.  相似文献

We analyzed the data obtained by the SPI telescope onboard the INTEGRAL observatory to search for short transient events with a duration from 1 ms to a few tens of seconds. An algorithm for identifying gamma-ray events against the background of a large number of charged particle interactions with the detector has been developed. The classification of events was made. Apart from the events associated with cosmic gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) confirmed by other space experiments and the activity of known soft gamma repeaters (for example, SGR 1806-20), previously unreported GRBs have been found. GRB candidates and short gamma-ray events probably associated with the activity of known SGRs and AXPs have been selected. The spectral evolution of 28 bright GRBs from the catalog has been studied extensively. A new method for investigating the spectral evolution is proposed. The energy dependence of the spectral lag for bursts with a simple structure of their light curves and for individual pulses of multipulse events is shown to be described by a logarithmic function, lagAlog(E). It has been established that the parameter A depends on the pulse duration, with the dependence being universal for all of the investigated GRBs. No negative spectral lags have been detected for bursts with a simple structure of their light curves.  相似文献

We present the results of our analysis of the JEM-X/INTEGRAL data obtained from January 2003 to January 2015 aimed at searching for type I X-ray bursts from known and new bursters. Such bursts are caused by thermonuclear explosions on the surface of a neutron star. We have searched for bursts in the records of the count rate of the JEM-X detectors in the 3–20 keV energy band. We have separately reconstructed and analyzed the light curves of 104 X-ray bursters known to date based on the JEM-X data. A similar search for bursts was previously carried out in the 15–25 keV data from the IBIS/ISGRI telescope onboard the INTEGRAL observatory obtained in 2003–2009. We have continued to analyze the data from this telescope up until the observations in January 2015. The joint catalog of bursts detected by the two instruments includes 2201 events; their basic parameters are given. The large size of the sample of bursts makes it one of the most representative of the existing one and allows various statistical studies of bursts to be performed. In particular, we have constructed the dependence of the mean rate of type I bursts from bursters on the luminosity (accretion rate), revealed an appreciable burst rate from sources with a near-Eddington luminosity, and investigated the population of multiple bursts with a recurrence time much shorter than the time it takes for a critical mass of matter required for the initiation of an explosion to be accumulated on the neutron star surface. Almost all of the detected bursts are associated with already known bursters,we have found only one previously unknown burster, IGRJ17380-3749, in the archival data, and one more known, but poorly studied source, AX J1754.2-2754, has been identified as a burster. Several similar sources have previously been identified as bursters directly during the INTEGRAL observations.  相似文献

This work presents a possible luminosity estimator for long γ-ray bursts (GRBs) based on their light curves. We use the method of variability analysis in the time domain to calculate the power density spectrum (PDS) for each of the 12 GRBs with known redshifts observed by CGRO/BATSE. The peak of the power density spectrum P is a measure of the intensity of variability of the given light curve and a strong correlation is found between P and the isotropic peak luminosity L of the GRB. It is a successor to the lag-luminosity relation of Norris et al. (2000) and the variability-luminosity relation of Reichart et al. (2001).  相似文献

We have collected the observational data accumulated before the Swift experiment to check the possible connection of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with low-redshift galaxies. The BATSE/IPN experimental data on well-localized short GRBs and the SDSS DR5 and PSCz catalogs of galaxies are used. The PSCz sky coverage has allowed us to search for host galaxies for a sample of 34 short GRBs. One or more galaxies have been found in the error boxes of six bursts, but the probability of a chance coincidence for each of them is high. No excess of nearby galaxies in the total sample has been detected. The 90% confidence limit corresponds to the fact that no more than 7%of the short GRBs could originate in nearby galaxies of the PSCz sample. The estimated upper limit of several percent may be considered to be valid in the volume z = 0.015–0.025. Based on the results of our search, we have estimated the lower limits for the isotropic energies E γiso of 31 short bursts from our sample. Their values lie within the range 1.0 × 1047–2.7 × 1049 erg. The possible fraction of the flares from magnetars in our sample of short GRBs is discussed. The SDSS sky coverage is currently insufficient to perform a similar analysis.  相似文献

Long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are important for the study of the Universe near and beyond the epoch of reionization. In this paper, we describe the characteristics of an 'ideal' instrument that can be used to search for GRBs at z ≥ 6–10. We find that the detection of these objects requires soft-band detectors with high sensitivity and a moderately large field of view. In light of these results, we compare available and planned GRB missions, deriving conservative predictions of the number of high-redshift GRBs detectable by these instruments along with the maximum accessible redshift. We show that the Swift satellite will be able to detect various GRBs at z ≥ 6, and likely at z ≥ 10 if the trigger threshold is decreased by a factor of ∼2. Furthermore, we find that INTEGRAL and GLAST are not the best tools to detect bursts at z ≥ 6, the former being limited by the small field of view, and the latter by its hard energy band and relatively low sensitivity. Finally, future missions ( SVOM , EDGE and, in particular, EXIST ) will provide a good sample of GRBs at z ≥ 6 within a few years of operation.  相似文献

We analyzed a sample of 66 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and statistically confirmed the prediction on the time curve of the hardness ratio of GRBs made by Qin et al. based on the curvature effect. In their analysis, GRB pulses are divided into three types according to the shape of their raw hardness ratio (RHR) time curves, defined as to include the background counts to the signal counts, so as to make use of counts within small time intervals. Of the three types, very hard sources exhibit a perfect pulse-like profile (type 1), hard bursts possess a pulse-like profile with a dip in the decay phase (type 2), and soft bursts show no pulse-like profile but have only a dipped profile (type 3). In terms of the conventional hardness ratio, type 3 sources are indeed generally softer than those of type 1 and type 2, in agreement with the prediction. We found that the minimum value of RHR is sensitive in distinguishing the different types. We propose that GRB pulses can be classified according to the minimum value of RHR and that the different type sources may be connected with different strengths of the shock or/and the magnetic field.  相似文献

Data obtained by the on-board X-ray telescope of the Swift satellite show that a shallow decay component is present in the light curve of the early X-ray afterglows of some γ-ray bursts (GRBs), but not in others. The physical mechanism of this component is debatable. We have made a comparative study on the observational characteristics of the two kinds of GRBs for a sample of 29 GRBs. Our results demonstrate that the two kinds of GRBs have no significant difference in the burst duration, γ-ray flux, spectral index, hardness ratio and peak energy. However, a significant difference exists in the early X-ray afterglows of the bursts: the bursts with a shallow decay component tend to have a softer and fainter X-ray afterglow than those without a shallow decay component. The efficiency of the γ-ray radiation is also very different for the two kinds of bursts: it is obviously higher for the bursts with a shallow decay component than those without. These results seem to suggest that the progenitors and central engines of the two kinds of GRBs are similar, and that the appearance of the shallow decay component is probably due to the surrounding medium.  相似文献

Gravitational lensing of a gamma-ray burst (GRB) by a single point mass will produce a second, delayed signal. Several authors have discussed using microlensed GRBs to probe a possible cosmological population of compact objects. We analyse a closely related phenomenon: the effect of microlensing by low to medium optical depth in compact objects on the averaged observed light curve of a sample of GRBs. We discuss the cumulative measured flux as a function of time resulting from delays caused by microlensing by cosmological compact objects. The time-scale and curvature of this function describe unique values for the compact object mass and optical depth. For GRBs with durations larger than the detector resolution, limits could be placed on the mass and optical depth of cosmological compact objects. The method does not rely on the separation of lensed bursts from those that are spatially coincident.  相似文献

GRB 170817A, associated with the LIGO-Virgo GW170817 neutron-star merger event, lacks the short duration and hard spectrum of a Short gamma-ray burst (GRB) expected from long-standing classification models. Correctly identifying the class to which this burst belongs requires comparison with other GRBs detected by the Fermi GBM. The aim of our analysis is to classify Fermi GRBs and to test whether or not GRB 170817A belongs—as suggested—to the Short GRB class. The Fermi GBM catalog provides a large database with many measured variables that can be used to explore gamma-ray burst classification. We use statistical techniques to look for clustering in a sample of 1298 gamma-ray bursts described by duration and spectral hardness. Classification of the detected bursts shows that GRB 170817A most likely belongs to the Intermediate, rather than the Short GRB class. We discuss this result in light of theoretical neutron-star merger models and existing GRB classification schemes. It appears that GRB classification schemes may not yet be linked to appropriate theoretical models, and that theoretical models may not yet adequately account for known GRB class properties. We conclude that GRB 170817A may not fit into a simple phenomenological classification scheme.  相似文献

We assume that internal shocks of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) consist of multiple sub-jets with a collimation half-angle of about several times gamma-1i, where gammai is the Lorentz factor of each sub-jet. If by chance a sub-jet is first emitted off-axis from the line of sight, the observed peak energy can be in the X-ray region. Next, if by chance a subsequent sub-jet is emitted along the line of sight, then the peak energy will be in the gamma-ray region and the gamma ray may arrive after the X-ray precursor from the former sub-jet depending on parameters. This model predicts a new class of GRBs with extremely weak and short gamma-ray emission but X-ray precursors and/or postcursors as well as an afterglow.  相似文献

We study statistical properties of long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) produced by the collapsing cores of WR stars in binary systems. Fast rotation of the cores enables a two-stage collapse scenario, implying the formation of a spinar-like object. A burst produced by such a collapse consists of two pulses, whose energy budget is enough to explain observed GRBs. We calculate models of spinar evolution using results from a population synthesis of binary systems (done by the 'Scenario Machine') as initial parameters for the rotating massive cores. Among the resulting bursts, events with a weaker first peak, namely precursor, are identified, and the precursor-to-main-pulse time separations fully agree with the range of the observed values. The calculated fraction of long GRBs with precursor (about 10 per cent of the total number of long GRBs) and the durations of the main pulses are also consistent with observations. Precursors with lead times greater by up to one order of magnitude than those observed so far are expected to be about a factor of 2 less numerous. Independently of the GRB model assumed, we predict the existence of precursors that arrive up to  ≳103 s  in advance of the main events of GRBs.  相似文献

To find X-ray bursts from sources within the field of view of the IBIS/INTEGRAL telescope, we have analyzed all the archival data of the telescope available at the time of writing the paper (the observations from January 2003 to April 2009). We have detected 834 hard (15–25 keV) X-ray bursts, 239 of which were simultaneously recorded by the JEM-X/INTEGRAL telescope in the standard X-ray energy range. More than 70% of all bursts (587 events) have been recorded from the well-known X-ray burster GX 354-0. We have found upper limits on the distances to their sources by assuming that the Eddington luminosity limit was reached at the brightness maximum of the brightest bursts.  相似文献

The BATSE (Compton Gamma-ray Observatory/Bursts and Transient Source Experiment), Swift (Swift Gamma-ray Burst Explorer) and Fermi (Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope) satellites have provided us with a large amount of GRB sample. After a systematical study and comparison of the properties of the GRBs detected by these 3 kinds of instruments, it is found that although significant differences exist in the number of red-shifted bursts, the proportion of long bursts in total bursts and the photon flux distribution (lgN − lg P), but no significant difference exists in the duration time, the total flux of Gamma-ray radiation and the spectral hardness ratio. Considering that the observational energy bands of the Swift- and Fermi-detected bursts are different, after making corrections the difference in the lgN − lg P distribution can be basically eliminated. The differences in the number of red-shifted bursts and the proportion of long bursts in total bursts are caused by the different sensitivities of instruments. Namely, various instruments give different observed characteristics of GRBs, but they are consistent in nature.  相似文献
