Channel change induced by tributary sediment injection to a regulated, gravel-bed river is described for the River Rheidol, U.K., eighteen years after dam closure. Morphological and sedimentological data are presented for an aggrading reach. A primary lobate bar appears to have initiated flow separation and the subsequent construction of channel-side berms. Hydraulic sorting has operated to produce both longitudinal and lateral particle-size reduction, and selective particle-size dispersal appears to be an important process influencing channel change. The channel is adjusting to a lower width-depth ratio form, of smaller capacity, and with a steeper slope.  相似文献

This pilot study uses a chemical technique (KEtX) to establish vertical profiles of average monthly water temperature within river beds: the hyporheic zone at the interface between surface water and groundwater. Data are presented for two gravel-bed sites and one sand-bed site on the River Wissey, Norfolk, UK. From February to October 1992, average monthly temperatures were determined at 10cm intervals down 1 m profiles. A strong seasonal pattern was defined at all sites with hyporheic temperatures being relatively warm in winter and cool in summer. Isothermal periods occurred in March-April and September-October. Temperature ranges within the hyporheic were decreased (4.6–7.7°C) compared with those of surface waters (10 and 10.9°C). Temperature profiles were similar at all sites during winter, but the sand-bed site had relatively low temperatures at a standard depth within the hyporheic during summer and the temperature gradient became isothermal later in the autumn at this site. It is suggested that the influence of flows and substratum characteristics on temperature patterns, especially in regulated rivers, may have significant ecological implications, for example for determining the timing of salmonid fry and invertebrate emergence.  相似文献

In this study,three methods were used to analyze 17 large-scale local high-temperature regions with durations exceeding 2 h within magnetic clouds(MCs)observed by advanced composition explorer from 1998 to 2008.Results show that five of these large-scale regions may have been caused by flare heating;seven of the regions may have been caused by nonuniform expansion when MCs propagated in the solar-terrestrial space;four large-scale high temperature regions may likely result from combined non-uniform expansion and flare heating;and only one large-scale local high-temperature region was not related to either flare heating nor non-uniform expansion.No evidence indicated that magnetic reconnection occurred or had occurred within the high-temperature regions.Based on our results,we infer that such local high-temperature phenomena within MCs are caused primarily as a result of flare heating and non-uniform expansion,either separately or jointly,and that magnetic reconnection plays only a minor role in the formation of high-temperature regions.  相似文献

Wave forecasting aspects for basins with complicate geomorphology, such as the Aegean Sea, are investigated through an intercomparison study. The efficiency of the available wind models (ECMWF, UKMO) to reproduce wind patterns over special basins, as well as three wave models incorporating different physics and characteristics (WAM, AUT, WACCAS), are tested for selected storm cases representing the typical wind situations over the basin. From the wave results, discussed in terms of time-series and statistical parameters, the crucial role is pointed out of the wind resolution and the reliability of the different wave models to estimate the wave climate in such a basin. The necessary grid resolution is also tested, while for a specific test case (December 1991) ERS-1 satellite data are compared with those of the model.  相似文献

A method for delimiting the swash zone and regions within is presented. Two regions are recognized and distinguished by their differing flow kinematics. The outer swash region involves wave-swash interactions and related processes, whereas the inner swash region consists of pure swash motion (i.e., free from interaction with subsequent waves). The boundary between these two hydrokinematic regions can be determined from shoreline elevation time series. The vertical extent of the outer swash was found to scale directly with inner surf zone wave variance and beach slope. Since the vertical extent of the entire swash zone also varies directly with the former, the relative extents of the outer and inner swash are approximately constant for the range of beach slopes investigated here. The efficacy of a previously utilized method for determining the location of instruments in the swash zone, based on the percentage of time the bed is inundated, is established here for the first time. A new method for determining the location of an instrument station within either of the hydrokinematic regions is also presented, and requires only a single pressure sensor time series. The data discussed here include over 140 runup time series collected from five different sandy beaches with beach face gradients ranging from 0.03 to 0.12. The results are expected to be generally applicable to swell-dominated sandy beaches, where swash is driven by a combination of short and long waves in the inner surf zone. The applicability of the results at either extreme of the reflective–dissipative continuum remains to be established.  相似文献

A comparison of recent bulk chemical analyses of fresh, well-classified ordinary chondrites reveals that the unequilibrated H-3 and LL-3 chondrites tend to be iron-poor relative to equilibrated H- and LL-group chondrites (types 4–6). A more complex relationship in the L-group suggests that it consists of two chemical subgroups, in each of which iron is deficient in the lower petrologic types. The available data suggest that the chondrite parent bodies accreted inhomogeneously.  相似文献

One of the main objectives of the promising and challenging IAG project GGOS (Global Geodetic Observing System) is the availability of a global and accurate Terrestrial Reference Frame for Earth Science applications, particularly Earth Rotation, Gravity Field and geophysics. With the experience gained within the activities related to the International Terrestrial Reference System (ITRS) and its realization, the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF), the combination method proved its efficiency to establish a global frame benefiting from the strengths of the various space geodetic techniques and, in the same time, underlining their biases and weaknesses. In this paper we focus on the limitation factors inherent to each individual technique and to the combination, such as the current status of the observing networks, distribution of the co-location sites and their quality and accuracy of the combined frame parameters. Results of some TRF and EOP simultaneous combinations using CATREF software will be used to illustrate the current achievement and to help drawing up future goals and improvements in the GGOS framework. Beyond these technical aspects, the overall visibility and acceptance of ITRS/ITRF as international standard for science and applications is also discussed.  相似文献

Relative directions of magnetization have been measured within individual pillow basalts collected from the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. The angle between the magnetic directions was determined and is referred to as the directional difference. Although one pillow contained a directional difference of 44°, the remaining ten pillows had differences less than 14°. The maximum orientation and measurement error was 7°. Dispersion on the scale found in these fine-grained pillow basalts would not appreciably affect the magnetic anomaly pattern on the sea floor. We detected no reversals of magnetization despite the sometimes large and variable low-temperature oxidation. Comparison of directions within homogeneous segments of the pillow, viscous remanent magnetization (VRM) acquisition experiments, and alternating field (AF) demagnetization indicate a large portion of the dispersion was due to the acquisition of a viscous component in the larger grained, less oxidized portion of the pillows. Evidence from one variably weathered pillow suggests that extreme low-temperature oxidation may lead to the acquisition of a secondary component with high coercivities (20–80 mT). We could not determine whether this was a chemical remanent magnetization (CRM) or a VRM acquired by single domain grains near the superparamagnetic threshold. Hysteresis properties confirmed by microscopic examination indicated that the magnetic grain size in all the pillows was at least as small as pseudo-single domain.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The Archontis dynamo is a rare example of an MHD dynamo within which forcing drives a dynamo where the flow and magnetic fields are almost perfectly aligned and the energies are approximately equal. In this paper, I expand upon our knowledge of the dynamo by showing that the intermediate steady states of the kinetic and magnetic energies observed by Cameron and Galloway are not a necessary feature of aligned dynamos. Furthermore, I show that the steady state into which the flow and magnetic fields eventually evolve is remarkably robust to the addition of time dependence and asymmetry to the forcing.  相似文献

Permeability measurements are critical to the calculation of water‐flow within hillslopes. Despite this, errors in permeability measurements are often ignored, and can be very large particularly in disturbance‐sensitive gley soils. This work compares the uncertainties associated with six field methods of permeametry applied to a gleyed soil in upland Britain. Slug tests, constant‐head borehole permeametry, and falling‐head borehole permeametry were undertaken on established piezometers. Additionally, ring permeametry and two types of trench tests were evaluated. Method‐related uncertainty due to proximity of impeding layers of high sorptivity soils produces under‐ and over‐estimates of permeability by a factor of up to 0·2 and 5, respectively. This uncertainty band is smaller than the observed effects of anisotropy and temporal variability. Had smearing and soil‐ring leakage errors not been minimized, the methodological uncertainties would have been so large that they would have distorted the true spatial field of permeability and its estimated impact on the balance of vertical and lateral flow. Abstract Slices of oceanic lithosphere belonging to the neo‐Tethys realm crop out discontinuously in the northern Calabrian Arc, Southern Apennines. They consist of high‐pressure–low‐temperature metamorphic ophiolitic sequences formed from metaultramafics, metabasites and alternating metapelites, metarenites, marbles and calcschist. Ophiolites occupy an intermediate position in the northern Calabrian Arc nappe pile, situated between overlying Hercynian continental crust and the underlying Apenninic limestone units. In the literature, these ophiolitic sequences are subdivided into several tectonometamorphic units. Geochemical characteristics indicate that metabasites were derived from subalkaline basalts with tholeiitic affinity (transitional mid‐oceanic ridge basalt type), and a harzburgitic‐lherzolitic protolith is suggested for the serpentinites. The pressure–temperature‐deformation paths of the metabasites from different outcrops display similar features: (i) the prograde segment follows a typical Alpine geothermal gradient up to a metamorphic climax at 350°C and 0.9 GPa and crystallization of the high‐pressure mineral assemblage occurs along a pervasive foliation developed during a compressive tectonic event; and (ii) the retrogression path can be subdivided in two segments, the first is characterized by nearly isothermal decompression to approximately 400°C and 0.3 GPa and the second follows a cooling trajectory. During low‐pressure conditions, a second deformation event produces millimetric to decametric scale asymmetric folds that describe west‐verging major structures. The third deformation event is characterized by brittle extensional structures. The tectonometamorphic evolution of the ophiolitic sequences from the different outcrops is similar. Both thermobarometric modeling and tectonic history indicate that the studied rocks underwent Alpine subduction and exhumation processes as tectonic slices inside a west‐verging accretionary wedge. The subduction of oceanic lithosphere was towards the present east; therefore, the Hercynian continental crust, overthrusted on the ophiolitic accretionary wedge after the neo‐Tethys closure, was part of the African paleomargin or a continental microplate between Africa and Europe.  相似文献

Abstract

Finite-difference calculations have been carried out to determine the structure of finite-amplitude thermal convection within a self-gravitating fluid sphere with uniform heat release. For a fixed-surface boundary condition single-cell convection breaks up into double-cell convection at a Rayleigh number of 3 × 104, at a Rayleigh number of 5 × 105 four-cell convection is observed. With a free-surface boundary condition only single cell convection is obtained up to a Rayleigh number of 5 × 106.  相似文献

The paper presents the results of analytical and numerical model calculations of elastic surface displacements caused by earthquakes and the processes of earthquake nucleation. The analytical calculations are focused on the model of a homogeneous elastic space; the numerical calculations also cover models of radially inhomogeneous distributions of elastic moduli in the crust and upper mantle described by the PREM model.  相似文献

Summary The paper presents some mathematic patterns by using the linear programming. These patterns are making up a simple method of gravimetric data transformation, solvable with the help of digital computers. The areally weighted surface erosion for Niwot Ridge, an alpine interfluve in the Colorado Front Range, is 10−1 mm/y. This may be subdivided into rates for three generalized cover types: tundra meadow, 10−2 mm/y; dry tundra, 10−1 mm/y; late-lying snow patches, 10° mm/y. Tundra meadow (about 50 per cent of the interfluve area) yields about 5 per cent of the eroded material; dry tundra (35 per cent of the area) contributes slightly less than 50 per cent of the eroded material; while nivation hollows occupied by late-lying snow patches occupy only about 3 per cent of the area they contribute 50 per cent of the eroded material. The bulk of the surficial erosion is accomplished between June and September, primarily by rainsplash, except where snowmelt is important. The overall estimated surface lowering rate presented here is substantially higher than those reported previously.  相似文献

In principle it should be possible to obtain information about the orientation of the stress axes within a sinking slab from the first motions observed at a single suitably placed seismic station. This idea is tested on the Tonga-Fiji-Kermadec Arc, using the short-period vertical seismograms from Port Moresby, and the orientations so obtained agree with those derived from fault plane solutions.  相似文献
