Summary of the third discussion of the conference. Topics covered include the mechanisms controlling the star formation rate
ingalaxies, the source of the driving energy for interstellar turbulence, and the reasons for different star formation rates
ingalaxies with similar masses.

Star formation happens in a clustered way which is why the star cluster population of a particular galaxy is closely related to the star formation history of this galaxy. From the probabilistic nature of a mass function follows that the mass of the most massive cluster of a complete population, M max , has a distribution with the total mass of the population as a parameter. The total mass of the population is connected to the star formation rate (SFR) by the length of a formation epoch.
Since due to evolutionary effects only massive star clusters are observable up to high ages, it is convenient to use this Mmax (SFR) relation for the reconstruction of a star formation history. The age distribution of the most massive clusters can therefore be used to constrain the star formation history of a galaxy. The method, including an assessment of the inherent uncertainties, is introduced with this contribution, while following papers will apply this method to a number of galaxies. 相似文献

We have used far-infrared data from IRAS , Infrared Space Observatory ( ISO ), Spitzer Wide-Area Infrared Extragalactic (SWIRE), Submillimetre Common User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) and Max-Planck Millimetre Bolometer (MAMBO) to constrain statistically the mean far-infrared luminosities of quasars. Our quasar compilation at redshifts 0 < z < 6.5 and I -band luminosities −20 < I AB < −32 is the first to distinguish evolution from quasar luminosity dependence in such a study. We carefully cross-calibrate IRAS against Spitzer and ISO , finding evidence that IRAS 100-μm fluxes at <1 Jy are overestimated by ∼30 per cent. We find evidence for a correlation between star formation in quasar hosts and the quasar optical luminosities, varying as star formation rate (SFR) ∝ L 0.44±0.07 opt at any fixed redshift below z = 2 . We also find evidence for evolution of the mean SFR in quasar host galaxies, scaling as (1 + z )1.6±0.3 at z < 2 for any fixed quasar I -band absolute magnitude fainter than −28. We find no evidence for any correlation between SFR and black hole mass at 0.5 < z < 4 . Our data are consistent with feedback from black hole accretion regulating stellar mass assembly at all redshifts. 相似文献

We present a one-zone model of star formation in elliptical galaxies that includes thermal feedback from supernovae and a
temperature dependent star formation efficiency. The modulation of feedback with the total mass results in the triggering
of late episodes of star formation in low-mass galaxies. These small `bursts' can occur as late as at redshifts z ∼ 0.5 but they do not change significantly the optical and NIR color-magnitude relation (CMR) of cluster galaxies, both locally
and out to moderate redshifts, in agreement with the observations. However, they introduce a large scatter at the faint end
of the NUV-Optical CMR, as recently found in cluster Abell 851 (z = 0.41).

We have imaged a sample of 45 face-on spiral galaxies in the K band, to determine the morphology of the old stellar population, which dominates the mass in the disc. The K -band images of the spiral galaxies have been used to calculate different characteristics of the underlying density perturbation such as arm strengths, profiles and cross-sections, and spiral pitch angles. Contrary to expectations, no correlation was found between arm pitch angle and Hubble type, and combined with previous results this leads us to conclude that the morphology of the old stellar population bears little resemblance to the optical morphology used to classify galaxies. The arm properties of our galaxies seem inconsistent with predictions from the simplest density wave theories, and some observations, such as variations in pitch angle within galaxies, seem hard to reconcile even with more complex modal theories. Bars have no detectable effect on arm strengths for the present sample. We have also obtained B -band images of three of the galaxies. For these galaxies we have measured arm cross-sections and strengths, to investigate the effects of disc density perturbations on star formation in spiral discs. We find that B -band arms lead K -band arms and are narrower than K -band arms, apparently supporting predictions made by the large-scale shock scenario, although the effects of dust on B -band images may contribute towards these results. 相似文献

We present a test for the degree of symmetry in the distribution of the Hα brightness along the arms of a sample of spiral galaxies. The test consists of deriving the cross-correlation function of the Hα brightness as a function of curvilinear distance along pairs of opposed arms, after unfolding the arms geometrically. Our results reveal a significantly greater degree of symmetry in the non-barred population than in the barred. We derive parameters for both bar strength and bar ellipticity, and compare these with the derived cross-correlations to strengthen this conclusion. We suggest that density waves are a probable cause for the appearance of global, i.e. disc-wide, two-fold symmetry in spiral discs. Comparison with published work on abundance gradients in the discs of barred and non-barred galaxies indicates that, as for the abundances, mixing in the spiral disc as a result of the bar potential may well be responsible for our observation that stronger bars are related to reduced two-fold symmetry in the distribution of star-forming regions along the spiral arms. 相似文献

A preliminary analysis is given of 2D spectroscopic data on the galaxy SBS 1533+574(AB) obtained using the multipupil spectrographs
on the 2.6-m telescope at the BAO (VAGR) and the 6-m telescope at the SAO (MPFS). The two components of the galaxy are star
formation regions in different stages. The component SBS 1533+574B is known to be a BCDG. The plots of the intensity distribution
of the radiation in the recombination lines of hydrogen and the forbidden lines of gases with a low degree of ionization obtained
here make it possible to compare the basic characteristics of the HII-zones and the surrounding shell. The velocity distribution
over the field of the galaxy is indicative of a common rotation of the system and of an intrinsic rotation of the components
which is more distinct for component B.

We present high-resolution near-infrared imaging obtained using adaptive optics and HST /NICMOS, and ground-based spectroscopy of the hotspot galaxy NGC 2903. Our near-infrared resolution imaging enables us to resolve the infrared hotspots into individual young stellar clusters or groups of these. The spatial distribution of the stellar clusters is not coincident with that of the bright H ii regions, as revealed by the HST /NICMOS Pa α image. Overall, the circumnuclear star formation in NGC 2903 shows a ring-like morphology with an approximate diameter of 625 pc.
The star formation properties of the stellar clusters and H ii regions have been studied using the photometric and spectroscopic information in conjunction with evolutionary synthesis models. The population of bright stellar clusters shows a very narrow range of ages, 4–7×106 yr after the peak of star formation, or absolute ages 6.5–9.5×106 yr (for the assumed short-duration Gaussian bursts), and luminosities similar to the clusters found in the Antennae interacting galaxy. This population of young stellar clusters accounts for some 7–12 per cent of the total stellar mass in the central 625 pc of NGC 2903. The H ii regions in the ring of star formation have luminosities close to that of the supergiant H ii region 30 Doradus, they are younger than the stellar clusters, and they will probably evolve into bright infrared stellar clusters similar to those observed today. We find that the star formation efficiency in the central regions of NGC 2903 is higher than in normal galaxies, approaching the lower end of infrared luminous galaxies. 相似文献
