Detailed statistics and analysis of 264 type III bursts observed with the 625–1500 MHz spectrograph during the 23rd solar cycle (from July 2000 to April 2003) are carried out in the present article. The main statistical results are similar to those of microwave type III bursts presented in the literature cited, such as the correlation between type III bursts and flares, polarization, duration, frequency drift rate (normal and reverse slopes), distribution of type III bursts and frequency bandwidth. At the same time, the statistical results also point out that the average values of the frequency drift rates and degrees of polarization increase with the increase in frequency and the average value of duration decreases with the increase in frequency. Other statistical results show that the starting frequencies of the type III bursts are mainly within the range from 650 to 800 MHz, and most type III bursts have an average bandwidth of 289 MHz. The distributions imply that the electron acceleration and the place of energy release are within a limited decimetric range. The characteristics of the narrow bandwidth possibly involve the magnetic configuration at decimetric wavelengths, the location of electron acceleration in the magnetic field nearto the main flare, the relevant runaway or trapped electrons, or the coherent radio emission produced by some secondary shock waves. In addition, the number of type III bursts with positive frequency drift rates is almost equal to that with negative frequency drift rates. This is probably explained by the hypothesis that an equal number of electron beams are accelerated upwards and downwards within the range of 625 to 1500 MHz. The radiation mechanism of type III bursts at decimetric wavelengths probably includes these microwave and metric mechanisms and the most likely cause of the coherent plasma radiation are the emission processes of the electron cyclotron maser.

68 groups of type III bursts recorded with the dynamic spectrograph (from1 to 2 GHz) at the Beijing Astronomical Observatory are statistically analyzed in this present article, with the frequency drift, duration, bandwidth and polarization of each of these events being analyzed in detail. These observational features are different from those of metric, decimetric and microwave high frequency type III bursts, showing that there possibly exist transition phenomena in the microwave low frequency band and the microwave type III bursts at low frequencies are possibly produced by the harmonic plasma radiation caused by nonthermal electronic beams and by the electron gyro-maser radiation. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

A flare-CME event on April 15, 1998 is studied with data of Nobeyama Radio Polarimeters (NoRP) and Heliograph (NoRH), the radio spectrometers of Chinese National Astronomical Observatories (1.0–2.0 GHz and 2.6–2.8 GHz), and the Astrophysical Institute of Postdam (200–800 MHz), as well as the data of YOHKOH, SOHO, BATSE, and GOES. There were strong fluctuations superposed on the initial phase of the BATSE hard X-ray burst, and the radio burst at 1.0–2.0 GHz with a group of type III-like positive and negative frequency drift pairs, which may be interpreted as the process of magnetic reconnection or particle acceleration in corona. A type II-like burst with a series of pulsations at 200–800 MHz followed the maximum phase of the radio and hard X-ray burst, and slowly drifted to lower frequencies with typical zebra feature. After 10 min of that, a similar dynamic spectrum was recorded at 2.6–3.8 GHz, where the type II-like signal drifted to higher frequencies with a series of pulsations and zebra structures. The polarization sense was strongly RCP at 2.6–3.8 GHz, and weakly LCP at 1.0–2.0 GHz, which was confirmed by the observations of NoRP. The radiation mechanism of these pulsations may be caused by the electron cyclotron maser instability. The local magnetic field strength and source height are estimated based on the gyro-synchrotron second harmonic emission. The ambient plasma density is calculated from the YOHKOH/SXT data. The ratio between the electron plasma frequency and gyro-frequency is around 1.3, which corresponds to the reversal value from extraordinary mode (LCP) to ordinary mode (RCP). Moreover, both the time scale and the modularity of an individual pulse increase statistically with the increase in the burst flux, which may be explained by the acceleration process of non-thermal electrons in the shock wave-fronts propagated upward and downward. Therefore, the radio observations may provide an important signature that flare and CME are triggered simultaneously by magnetic reconnection and are associated with the formation of bi-directional shock waves.

A high-speed, halo-type coronal mass ejection (CME), associated with a GOES M4.6 soft X-ray flare in NOAA AR 0180 at S12W29 and an EIT wave and dimming, occurred on 9 November 2002. A complex radio event was observed during the same period. It included narrow-band fluctuations and frequency-drifting features in the metric wavelength range, type III burst groups at metric – hectometric wavelengths, and an interplanetary type II radio burst, which was visible in the dynamic radio spectrum below 14 MHz. To study the association of the recorded solar energetic particle (SEP) populations with the propagating CME and flaring, we perform a multi-wavelength analysis using radio spectral and imaging observations combined with white-light, EUV, hard X-ray, and magnetogram data. Velocity dispersion analysis of the particle distributions (SOHO and Wind in situ observations) provides estimates for the release times of electrons and protons. Our analysis indicates that proton acceleration was delayed compared to the electrons. The dynamics of the interplanetary type II burst identify the burst source as a bow shock created by the fast CME. The type III burst groups, with start times close to the estimated electron-release times, trace electron beams travelling along open field lines into the interplanetary space. The type III bursts seem to encounter a steep density gradient as they overtake the type II shock front, resulting in an abrupt change in the frequency drift rate of the type III burst emission. Our study presents evidence in support of a scenario in which electrons are accelerated low in the corona behind the CME shock front, while protons are accelerated later, possibly at the CME bow shock high in the corona.

A New Catalogue of Fine Structures Superimposed on Solar Microwave Bursts
The 2.6-3.8 GHz, 4.5-7.5 GHz, 5.2-7.6 GHz and 0.7-1.5 GHz component spectrometers of Solar Broadband Radio Spectrometer (SBRS) started routine observations, respectively, in late August 1996, August 1999, August 1999, and June 2000. They just managed to catch the coming 23rd solar active maximum. Consequently, a large amount of microwave burst data with high temporal and high spectral resolution and high sensitivity were obtained. A variety of fine structures (FS) superimposed on microwave bursts have been found. Some of them are known, such as microwave type Ⅲ bursts, microwave spike emission, but these were observed with more detail; some are new. Reported for the first time here are microwave type U bursts with similar spectral morphology to those in decimetric and metric wavelengths, and with outstanding characteristics such as very short durations (tens to hundreds ms), narrow bandwidths, higher frequency drift rates and higher degrees of polarization. Type N and type M bursts were also observed. Detailed zebra pattern and fiber bursts at the high frequency were found. Drifting pulsation structure (DPS) phenomena closely associated with CME are considered to manifest the initial phase of the CME, and quasi-periodic pulsation with periods of tens ms have been recorded. Microwave “patches”, unlike those reported previously, were observed with very short durations (about 300ms), very high flux densities (up to 1000 sfu), very high polarization (about 100% RCP), extremely narrow bandwidths (about 5%), and very high spectral indexes. These cannot be interpreted with the gyrosynchrotron process. A superfine structure in the form of microwave FS (ZPS,type U), consisting of microwave millisecond spike emission (MMS), was also found.

We report detailed observations of the herringbone (HB) fine structure on type II solar radio bursts. Data from the Culgoora radiospectrograph, radiometer and radioheliograph are analyzed. We determine the characteristic spectral profiles, frequency drift rates and exciter velocities, fluxes, source sizes, brightness temperatures, and polarizations of individual HB bursts. Correlations between individual bursts within the characteristic groups of bursts and the properties of the associated type II bursts are examined. Our data are compatible with HB bursts being radiation at multiples of the plasma frequency generated by electron streams accelerated by the type II shock. We conclude that HB bursts are physically distinct phenomena from type II and type III bursts, differing significantly in emission processes and/or source conditions; this conclusion indicates that many of the presently available theoretical ideas for HB bursts are incorrect. Now at: Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Iowa, U.S.A.Now at Anglo-Australian Observatory, Sydney, Australia.

Type-IIIb, IIId, and III solar decametric radio bursts, being distinguished by the typical negative drift rate of their dynamic spectra, are compared. Observational data were obtained with a UTR-2 antenna during the period 1973–1982. During the analysis of the bursts of all these spectral varieties, the frequency drift time (drift delay) was measured in the ranges 25 to 12.5 MHz, 25 to 20 MHz, and 12.5 to 10 MHz. Durations of type-III bursts were determined at the harmonically-related frequencies of 25 and 12.5 MHz; radio source locations were also used.It is shown that these decametric bursts are distinctly divided into two groups: (1)type-IIIb chains of simple stria bursts and also normal type-III storm bursts observed at central regions constitute a group of events with a fast drifting spectrum; (2) type-III bursts from type-IIIb-III pairs and the limb variant of normal III bursts, as well as peculiar type-IIId chains of diffuse striae and related chains with an echo component, constitute a second group of events with comparatively slow drift rates. The first group of the phenomena is associated with the fundamental F frequency and the second one, with the harmonic H of the coronal plasma frequency. The results of the present investigation agree well with earlier conclusions on the harmonic origin of decametric chains and type-III bursts. Measurements of drift delays in narrow frequency ranges, an octave apart, as well as type-III burst durations at harmonically-related frequencies confirm the existence of both F and H components in the solar radiation. The essential result of 10 years of decametric observations is that the frequency drift rates and durations are rather stable parameters for the various type-III bursts and stria-burst chains. The stability characterizes some unspecified conditions of burst generation in the middle corona.

It is commonly believed that solar type II bursts are caused by accelerated electrons at a shock front. Holman and Pesses (1983) suggested that electrons creating type II bursts are accelerated by the shock drift mechanism. Zlobec et al. (1993) dealt with a fine structure of type II bursts (herringbones) and suggested a qualitative model where electrons are accelerated by a nearly perpendicular wavy shock front. Using this idea, we developed a model of electron acceleration by such a wavy shock front. Electrons are accelerated by the drift mechanism in the shock layer. Under simplifying assumptions it is possible to obtain an analytical solution of electron motion in the wavy shock front. The calculations show that electrons are rarely reflected more than once at the wavy shock front and that their final energy is mostly 1–3 times the initial one. Their acceleration does not depend significantly on shock spatial parameters. In the present model all electrons are eventually transmitted downstream where they form two downstream beams. Resulting spectral and angular distributions of accelerated electrons are presented and the relevance of the model to the herringbone beams is discussed.

A type IV radio burst accompanied by several normal- and reverse-drifting type III bursts, multiple long-term quasi-periodic pulsations and spikes was observed with the radio spectrometers (1.0–2.0 and 2.6–3.8 GHz) at National Astronomical Observatories of China (NAOC) on 23 September 1998. In combination with the images of Siberian Solar Radio Telescope (SSRT) of Russia, the complex and multiple magnetic structures inferred from the radio bursts reveal the existence of both large-scale and small-scale magnetic structures. This event suggests that the geometries of coronal magnetic fields contain multiple discrete electron acceleration/injection sites at different heights, and extended open and closed magnetic field lines. It can be shown that the energetic electrons gain access to open, diverging and closed field lines thus producing different types of radio bursts. From the characteristics of position, polarization, dispersion and displacement of the sources, the model of the type IV event is supported, which involves synchrotron emission from the electrons confined by the rapid scattering through the interaction of hydromagnetic wave with particles.

We report the first observations of Type III-like bursts at frequencies 10 – 30 MHz. More than 1000 such bursts during 2002 – 2004 have been analyzed. The frequency drift of these bursts is several times that of decameter Type III bursts. A typical duration of the Type III-like bursts is 1 – 2 s. These bursts are mainly observed when the source active region is located within a few days from the central meridian. The drift rate of the Type III-like bursts can take a large value by considering the velocity of Type III electrons and the group velocity of generated electromagnetic waves.

Two microwave type-U bursts observed with the 2.6–3.8 GHz spectrometer of Beijing Astronomical Observatory (BAO) are described and analysed in this paper. The microwave type-U bursts have very short durations (about 200 ms), narrow bandwidth, high-frequency drift rates of the ascending and descending branches, and a high degree of circular polarization (80%). The sense of polarization remains the same from the ascending to the descending branch.

We have selected 27 solar microwave burst events recorded by the Solar Broadband Radio Spectrometer (SBRS) of China, which were accompanied by M/X class flares and fast CMEs. A total of 70.4% of radio burst events peak at 2.84 GHz before the peaks of the related flares’ soft X-ray flux with an average time difference of about 6.7 minutes. Almost all of the CMEs start before or around the radio burst peaks. At 2.6?–?3.8 GHz bandwidth, 234 radio fine structures (FSs) were classified. More often, some FSs appear in groups, which can contain several individual bursts. It is found that many more radio FSs occur before the soft X-ray maxima and even before the peaks of radio bursts at 2.84 GHz. The events with high peak flux at 2.84 GHz have many more radio FSs and the durations of the radio bursts are independent of the number of radio FSs. Parameters are given for zebra patterns, type III bursts, and fiber structures, and the other types of FSs are described briefly. These radio FSs include some special types of FSs such as double type U bursts and W-type bursts.

Using the observed data for metric and hectometric type III radio bursts, the dependence of burst characteristics on the solar longitude has been examined over a wide frequency range. It is found that there exists an east-west asymmetry for the extension of metric type III bursts into hectometric wavelength range. In particular, hectometric bursts are rarely observed for solar flares associated with metric bursts eastward solar longitude 60°E. Furthermore, for eastern longitudes, the low frequency radio observations show a large dispersion in drift time interval.

A group of type III bursts observed with the 2.6–3.8 GHz spectrometer of National Astronomical Observatory of China on 15 April 1998 is analyzed. They have the characteristics of broad bandwidth (>100 MHz), very short durations (<100 ms), high polarization degree (100%), high frequency drift rates (>1 GHz s–1), and fast pulsations (with a period of about 100–200 ms). Their time profiles are also analysed. According to these characteristics, we suggest that these microwave type III bursts may be due to the fundamental plasma emission.

Here we report the statistical analysis of 160 isolated decimetric type III bursts, a majority of them (74%) having central frequency above 1000 MHz, observed in 8 flares by the spectrometer Phoenix. The most important finding of the detailed analysis is: 67% of all the bursts are reverse slope, 38% normal and 5% bi-directional. Also, we obtained the following results: (a) the best fits for the average half power duration and for the average drift rate as a function of frequency are given by t1/2=1.7×104f–0.60and /df/dt|=(0.09±0.03)f(1.35 ± 0.10), respectively; (b) the frequency range of most of the type III bursts is less than 250 MHz; (c) the number of bursts decreases with increasing starting frequency and flux; (d) peak flux decreases with increasing frequency. The relations obtained fit well for higher frequency observations. Assuming an improved density model and type III emission at 2ndharmonic, the beam parameters of type III bursts are determined.

On April 21, 2002, a broadband solar radio burst was observed at about 01:00 – 03:00 UT with the digital spectrometers of National Astronomical Observatories of China (NAOC). Also many fiber bursts superposed on the continuum bursts were detected in the frequency range of 2.6 – 3.8 GHz during the time interval. After data processing, some parameters of the fibers such as frequency drift rate, duration, bandwidth, and relative bandwidth were determined. The mean value of the frequency drift was in the range of 42.3 – 87.4 MHz s−1 (negative). A theoretical interpretation for the fibers was presented based upon a model of the velocity of Alfvén solitons. In this model, the source of the fiber emission was considered as the ducting of the solitons within the magnetic-mirror loop. Then the magnetic field strength of the fiber source was estimated to be about 130 ≤ B0 ≤ 270 G. Also a comparison of the magnetic field estimation was made with another model of whistler group velocity.
