Using more than five years of data from the magnetometer and electron reflectometer (MAG/ER) on Mars Global Surveyor (MGS), we derive the draping direction of the magnetic field above a given latitude band in the northern hemisphere. The draping direction varies on timescales associated with the orbital period of Mars and with the solar rotation period. We find that there is a strongly preferred draping direction when Mars is in one solar wind sector, but the opposite direction is not preferred as strongly for the other solar wind sector. This asymmetry occurs at or below the magnetic pileup boundary (MPB), is observed preferentially on field lines that connect to the collisional ionosphere, and is independent of planetary longitude. The observations could be explained by a hemispherical asymmetry in the access of field lines to the low-altitude ionosphere, or possibly from global modification of the low-altitude solar wind interaction by crustal magnetic fields. We show that the draping direction affects both the penetration of sheath plasma to 400 km altitudes on the martian dayside and the radial component of the magnetic field on the planetary night side.  相似文献

Recent U.S.S.R. studies of the magnetic field and solar wind flow in the vicinity of Mars and Venus confirm earlier U.S.A. reports of a bow shock wave developed as the solar wind interacts with these planets. Mars 2 and 3 magnetometer experiments report the existence of an intrinsic planetary magnetic field, sufficiently strong to form a magnetopause, deflecting the solar wind around the planet and its ionosphere. This is in contrast to the case for Venus, where it is assumed to be the ionosphere and processes therein which are responsible for the solar wind deflection. An empirical relationship appears to exist between planetary dipole magnetic moments and their angular momentum for Moon, Mars, Venus, Earth and Jupiter. Implications for the magnetic fields of Mercury and Saturn are discussed.Paper presented at the Lunar Science Institute Conference on Geophysical and Geochemical Exploration of the Moon and Planets, January 10–12, 1973  相似文献

The solar wind parameters were analyzed using the concept which is being developed by the authors and assumes the existence of several systems of magnetic fields of different scales on the Sun. It was demonstrated that the simplest model with one source surface and a radial expansion does not describe the characteristics of the quiet solar wind adequately. Different magnetic field subsystems on the Sun affect the characteristics of the solar wind plasma in a different way, even changing the sign of correlation. New multiparameter schemes were developed to compute the velocity and the magnetic field components of the solar wind. The radial component of the magnetic field in the solar corona and the tilt of the heliospheric current sheet, which determines the degree of divergence of field lines in the heliosphere, were taken into account when calculating the magnetic field in the solar wind. Both the divergence of field lines in the corona and the strength of the solar magnetic field are allowed for in calculating the solar wind speed. The suggested schemes provide a considerably higher computation accuracy than that given by commonly used one-parameter models.  相似文献

The most pertinent effect of the currents in the coronal-interplanetary space is their alteration of the magnetic topology to form configurations of open field lines. The important currents seem to be those in the neighborhoods of the interfaces between closed and open field lines or between oppositely directed open field lines in the coronal helmet-streamer structures. Thus, the coronal-interplanetary space may be regarded as being partitioned by current-sheets into several piecewise current-free regions. These current sheets overlie the photospheric neutral lines, where the vertical component of the magnetic field reverses its polarity on the solar surface. But, their locations and strengths are determined by force balance between the magnetic field and the gas pressure in the coronal-interplanetary space. Since the pressure depends on the flow velocity of the solar wind and the solar wind channels along magnetic flux tubes, there is a strong magnetohydrodynamic coupling between the magnetic field and the solar wind. The sheetcurrent approach presented in this paper seems to be a reasonable way to account for this complicated interaction. The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

Collisions of comets with planetary bodies are capable of impressing patterns of magnetization onto them that match those observed for the Moon and possibly for Mercury. The ambient solar wind magnetic field is briefly but strongly enhanced as the large partially ionized cometary atmosphere is compressed against the planetary surface. Just at the time of peak field enhancement, the solid part of the comet collides with the surface and the compressed fields are permanently imprinted by shock magnetization.  相似文献

The simultaneous enhancement or subsidence of both the high-speed solar wind streams and the galactic cosmic rays in the minimum or the maximum phase of the solar cycle are interpreted in a unified manner by the concept of geometrical evolution of the general magnetic field of the corona-heliomagnetosphere system. The coronal general magnetic field evolves from an open dipole-like configuration in the minimum phase to a closed configuration with many loop-like formations in the maximum phase of the solar cycle. This concept, developed in a theoretical solar-cycle model driven by the dynamo action of the global convection, is examined and found to be valid by studying the evolution of the coronal general magnetic field calculated from the observed surface general magnetic field of 1959–1974. It is also found that the energy density of the poloidal component of the general surface field, from which the coronal field originates, attained a maximum in the maximum phase and showed a evolution with virtually no phase delay with respect to that of the toroidal component of the field, to which the sunspot activity is related. The subsidence of the high-speed solar wind in the maximum phase is understood as a braking of the solar wind streams by the tightly closed and strong coronal field lines in the lower corona in the maximum phase. The field lines of the heliomagnetosphere, which originate from the coronal field lines drawn by the solar wind, are inferred to be also more tightly closed at the heliopause in the maximum phase than in the minimum phase. The decrease of the galactic cosmic rays in the maximum phase (known as the Forbush's negative correlation between the galactic cosmic ray intensity and the solar activity or the Forbush solar-cycle modulation of the galactic cosmic rays) is interpreted as a braking of the cosmic rays by the closed magnetic field lines at the heliopause. The observed phase lag (approximately one year) of the galactic cosmic ray modulation with respect to the evolution of the solar cycle, and the observed absence of the gradient of the total cosmic ray intensity between 1 AU and 8 AU, are discussed to support this view of the cosmic ray modulation at the remote heliopause, and reject other hypotheses to explain the phenomenon in terms of the magnetic irregularities of various kinds carried by the solar wind: The short-term Forbush decrease at a time of a flare shows that the magnetic irregularities can react on the cosmic rays relatively near the Sun if they even played a dominant role in the long-term modulation. The concept of the general magnetic field of the corona and the surface is also used to understand the basic nature of the surface field itself, by comparing the geometry of the calculated coronal field lines with the eclipse photographs of the corona, and by discussing, in the context of the coronal general magnetic field associated with the solar cycle, the process of the emergence of the coronal field lines from the interior and the formation of the transequatorial arches and loops connecting the two hemispheres in the corona.  相似文献

The relatively high contrast between planetary and solar low-frequency radio emissions suggests that the low-frequency radio range may be well adapted to the direct detection of exoplanets. We review the most significant properties of planetary radio emissions (auroral as well as satellite induced) and show that their primary engine is the interaction of a plasma flow with an obstacle in the presence of a strong magnetic field (of the flow or of the obstacle). Scaling laws have been derived from solar system planetary radio emissions that relate the emitted radio power to the power dissipated in the various corresponding flow–obstacle interactions. We generalize these scaling laws into a “radio-magnetic” scaling law that seems to relate output radio power to the magnetic energy flux convected on the obstacle, this obstacle being magnetized or unmagnetized. Extrapolating this scaling law to the case of exoplanets, we find that hot Jupiters may produce very intense radio emissions due to either magnetospheric interaction with a strong stellar wind or to unipolar interaction between the planet and a magnetic star (or strongly magnetized regions of the stellar surface). In the former case, similar to the magnetosphere–solar wind interactions in our solar system or to the Ganymede–Jupiter interaction, a hecto-decameter emission is expected in the vicinity of the planet with an intensity possibly 103–105 times that of Jupiter's low frequency radio emissions. In the latter case, which is a giant analogy of the Io–Jupiter system, emission in the decameter-to-meter wavelength range near the footprints of the star's magnetic field lines interacting with the planet may reach 106 times that of Jupiter (unless some “saturation” mechanism occurs). The system of HD179949, where a hot spot has been tentatively detected in visible light near the sub-planetary point, is discussed in some details. Radio detectability is addressed with present and future low-frequency radiotelescopes. Finally, we discuss the interests of direct radio detection, among which access to exoplanetary magnetic field measurements and comparative magnetospheric physics.  相似文献

In June 2006 Venus Express crossed several times the outer boundary of Venus induced magnetosphere, its magnetosheath and its bow shock. During the same interval the Cluster spacecraft surveyed the dawn flank of the terrestrial magnetosphere, intersected the Earth's magnetopause and spent long time intervals in the magnetosheath. This configuration offers the opportunity to perform a joint investigation of the interface between Venus and Earth's outer plasma layers and the shocked solar wind. We discuss the kinetic structure of the magnetopause of both planets, its global characteristics and the effects on the interaction between the planetary plasma and the solar wind. A Vlasov equilibrium model is constructed for both planetary magnetopauses and provides good estimates of the magnetic field profile across the interface. The model is also in agreement with plasma data and evidence the role of planetary and solar wind ions on the spatial scale of the equilibrium magnetopause of the two planets. The main characteristics of the two magnetopauses are discussed and compared.  相似文献

Using minimum variance analysis of the circular mapping data from the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) spacecraft during four selected weeks of observation, we identify 360 magnetic field structures in the Martian topside ionosphere with characteristic signatures of flux ropes. Physical parameters including size, peak field strength, helicity, orientation, and external conditions at the time of each observation are compiled for the events in each population. We observe that Martian flux ropes typically have a peak field amplitude of ∼15 nT and a diameter of ∼80–100 km assuming they are stationary. Flux ropes tend to be aligned approximately parallel to the planetary surface, and perpendicular to the direction from which the solar wind flows. They are more frequently observed during times of low solar wind pressure, but do not show a clear preference for a particular Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) draping direction. Flux rope characteristics of peak field amplitude, diameter, and helicity vary with solar zenith angle. Amplitudes tend to be higher during periods of high solar wind pressure. The events are sorted into three populations based on the location at which they were observed, possibly corresponding to distinct formation mechanisms. Flux ropes observed in eclipse tend to have smaller peak amplitudes and are larger than those observed in sunlight, and are less likely to be oriented parallel to the planetary surface. Proximity to crustal fields does not appear to influence the characteristics of flux ropes observed at the 400 km spacecraft altitude. The frequent observation of flux rope structures near Mars in a variety of locations suggests that the low-altitude plasma environment is quite dynamic, with magnetic shear playing a prominent role in determining magnetic field structure near the planet.  相似文献

Based on the single-fluid MHD model of Mars space simulation, this paper has studied the magnetic field structure in the near-Mars space and investigated the influence of Martian crustal magnetic anomalies on the magnetic field structure. In the process of the solar wind interaction with Mars, the bow shock and magnetic pile-up region are produced. The interplanetary magnetic lines are curved and deformed while they are towed toward the two poles by the solar wind. The majority of magnetic lines bypass the two poles, then leave behind a ‘V-shaped’ structure in the magnetotail behind Mars. In the crust of Mars, the local magnetic anomalies have a noticeable influence on the magnetic field structure. The magnetic anomalies at different positions and in different intensities interact with the solar wind to form the mini-magnetospheres of different structures and morphologies, such as the towed mini-magnetosphere and the mini-magnetosphere with open magnetic lines. The local magnetic anomalies have changed the near-Mars magnetic field structure, and probably changed the plasma distribution as well.  相似文献

We propose a mechanism whereby the solar wind flowing past the magnetosphere of Uranus causes a Faraday disc dynamo topology to be established and power to be extracted from the kinetic energy of rotation of Uranus. An immediate consequence of this dynamo is the generation of Birkeland currents that flow in and out of the sunlit polar cap with the accompanying production of polar aurora. We calculate the power extracted from planetary rotation as a function of planetary dipole magnetic moment and the ionospheric conductivity of Uranus. For plausible values of ionospheric conductivity, the observed auroral power requires a magnetic moment corresponding to a surface equatorial field of the order of 4 Gauss, slightly larger than the value 1.8 Gauss given by the empirical “magnetic Bodes law”.  相似文献

A model of planetary neutral and ion-exospheres in the solar wind is formulated for weak or lunar like solar-wind interaction with a planet. The neutral exosphere model allows for density and temperature variations and for rotation at the exobase. The ion-exosphere is produced by ionization of the neutral exosphere in the solar wind and its density distribution is obtained by solving the continuity equation in the drift approximation. Applying to Mercury a surface temperature distribution inferred from infra-red data and a vanishing bound neutral flux at the base, He and He+ density distributions are found. When the He atmosphere of Mercury is due entirely to the surface bombardment by solar wind He++, the resulting He+ density is found to vary from 1.5 × 10−1 to 10−3 cm−3 over the range 1.5–5 planetocentric radii on the dayside. These densities are found to be detectable by typical solar-wind plasma instruments. The possible effects of cyclotron-resonant scattering by interplanetary magnetic field fluctuations are examined and shown to be negligible. An electromagnetic plasma instability, triggered by the birth of ions in the exosphere, is shown to be important for the thermalization of the energy mode transverse to the interplanetary magnetic field, allowing more ions to be detected by solar-wind ion probes.  相似文献

The influence of solar EUV and solar wind conditions on ion escape at Mars is investigated using ion data from the Aspera-3 instrument on Mars Express, combined with solar wind proxy data obtained from the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) spacecraft. A solar EUV flux proxy based on data from the Earth position, scaled and shifted in time for Mars, is used to study relatively long time scale changes related to solar EUV variability. Data from May 2004 until November 2005 has been used. A clear dependence on the strength of the subsolar magnetic field as inferred from MGS measurements is seen in the ion data. The region of significant heavy ion flows is compressed and the heavy ion flux density is higher for high subsolar magnetic field strength. Because of the difference in outflow area, the difference in estimated total outflow is somewhat less than the difference in average flux density. We confirm previous findings that escaping planetary ions are mainly seen in the hemisphere into which the solar wind electric field is pointed. The effect is more pronounced for the high subsolar magnetic field case. The average ion motion has a consistent bias towards the direction of the solar wind electric field, but the main motion is in the antisunward direction. The antisunward flow velocity increases with tailward distance, reaching above at 2 to 3 martian radii downtail from Mars for O+ ions. Different ion species reach approximately the same bulk flow energy. We did not find any clear correlation between the solar EUV flux and the ion escape distribution or rate, probably because the variation of the solar EUV flux over our study interval was too small. The results indicate that the solar wind and its magnetic field directly interacts with the ionosphere of Mars, removing more ions for high subsolar magnetic field strength. The interaction region and the tail heavy ion flow region are not perfectly shielded from the solar wind electric field, which accelerates particles over relatively large tail distances.  相似文献

The International Heliophysical Year (IHY) 2007 is an international scientific program designed to coordinate observations of the heliosphere, the region of space from the solar surface through the solar wind and various planetary magnetospheres to the planetary upper atmospheres. A particular emphasis is given to the development of long-term international collaborations that will study the external drivers to the space environment and climate. The Ionospheric Tomography Network of Egypt (ITNE) is one such collaboration. It is a new chain of ionospheric tomography receivers that will be deployed to investigate the equatorial regions of the Earth’s ionosphere. The distribution of plasma density within 20° of the magnetic equator is highly sensitive to forcing from the solar wind through a process known as the equatorial fountain. ITNE will provide new observations of the density structures associated with the equatorial fountain.  相似文献

It is argued that differential rotation of the photospheric magnetic fields will induce currents in the corona. The work done against surface magnetic stresses will increase the energy content of the coronal magnetic field. The electrical conductivities are high and the foot points of field lines move with the differential rotation. The force-free field equations are solved with this constraint to obtain a minimum estimate of the energy increase for a quadrupole field. During a solar rotation the magnetic energy increases by 25%. Local release of this energy in the corona would have a significant effect. The expansion of field lines as a result of the differential rotation should increase the amount of flux and the field strength in the solar wind region. The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

It is shown that when the solar wind interacts with comets, its magnetic field may penetrate through the discontinuity surface into the cometary ionosphere. In case of Venus-like planets the effect of regular motion of magnetic field lines through, that surface is not present, and the presence of magnetic fields in the ionospheres of non-magnetic planets may be due to ionopause boundary instabilities.  相似文献

A scenario is presented whereby CMEs and interplanetary shocks are consequences of a large scale rearrangement of the coronal magnetic field induced by the disconnection of field lines from the solar surface due to the emergence of flux with opposite polarity. In this scenario the CME is the mass released from the previously closed structure and the interplanetary shock is formed by the injection of faster solar wind from an extended or newly created coronal hole which results from the opening of the field lines. Here CMEs and interplanetary shocks are associated events, but not cause-effect related. Observational and computational evidence supporting this view is provided.  相似文献

A model of the interaction of the solar wind with Venus is proposed including magnetic barrier formation, ionopause structure, plasma dynamics in the magnetic barrier, and the formation of the Venusian tail (wake). It is shown that under stationary conditions the ionopause is practically an equipotential boundary and its current is determined by a diamagnetic drift. The source of the plasma mantle can be provided by photoions appearing in the magnetic barrier and convecting toward the wake as a result of both magnetic pressure gradient and magnetic tension. The formation of the magnetic tail is determined by convection of magnetic barrier flux tubes in which the solar-wind plasma is replaced by ions of planetary origin. Compared to observational data the proposed model gives somewhat overestimated values of ion convective velocity and magnetic barrier thickness near the terminator and underestimated values of number density and magnetic field strength in the tail. Accordingly this suggests the possible influence of the anomalous ionization effects in the solar wind—Venus interaction.  相似文献

The technique of electron reflectometry, a method for remote estimation of planetary magnetic fields, is expanded from its original use of mapping crustal magnetic fields at the Moon to achieving the same purpose at Mars, where the presence of a substantial atmosphere complicates matters considerably. The motion of solar wind electrons, incident on the martian atmosphere, is considered in detail, taking account of the following effects: the electrons' helical paths around the magnetic field lines to which they are bound, the magnetic mirror force they experience due to converging field lines in the vicinity of crustal magnetic anomalies, their acceleration/deceleration by electrostatic potentials, their interactions with thermal plasma, their drifts due to magnetic field line curvature and perpendicular electric fields and their scattering off, and loss of energy through a number of different processes to, atmospheric neutrals. A theoretical framework is thus developed for modeling electron pitch angle distributions expected when a spacecraft is on a magnetic field line which is connected to both the martian crust and the interplanetary magnetic field. This framework, along with measured pitch angle distributions from the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) Magnetometer/Electron Reflectometer (MAG/ER) experiment, can be used to remotely measure crustal magnetic field magnitudes and atmospheric neutral densities at ∼180 km above the martian datum, as well as estimate average parallel electric fields between 200 and 400 km altitude. Detailed analysis and full results, concerning the crustal magnetic field and upper thermospheric density of Mars, are left to two companion papers.  相似文献
