The 2019 Geoscience Frontiers Annual Convention was held at the China University of Geosciences(Beijing),China on September 20,2019(Fig.1).This convention assembled earth scientists from four countries,including Australia(Dr.Christopher Spencer),Italy(Dr.Andrea Festa),UK(Dr.Pieter Vermeesch),China,and also representative from Elsevier(Beijing).The Convention started with the introduction by Dr.Lily Wang,Editorial Assistant at Geoscience Frontiers,followed by the inaugural address by Prof.M.Santosh,Editorial Advisor of Geoscience Frontiers.

Gondwana to Asia： Fourth International Symposium

The international symposium as titled above was held in Fukuoka, Japan from 8 to 10 November 2007. It was supported by seven organizations such as Kyushu University, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, IGCP 512, etc. The same symposium was held by the International Association for Gondwana Research in collaboration with Gondwana-related scientific projects in Chouchong, South Korea （2004）, Beijing （2005）, and Hong Kong （2006）.

A geologic workshop on the Qilian Mountains and adjacent region was held by the two sides of the Taiwan Strait from June 1 to June 9, 2000, in Beijing, China. 6th GEOCHIM ／UNESCO／SGA “Postgraduate certificated training course in geochemical exploration methods and their environmental applications”

It has been a tradition to organize very successful UNESCO Postgraduate Courses on Geochemical Prospecting Methods in the former Czechoslovakia from mid 70‘s. The first certificated course-GEOCHIM PRAHA UNESCO 1975 was launched on September 5, 1975 and lasted till October 25,1975. Since that time this course has been organized biannually by the Czech Geological Survey in Prague together with the Dionyz SEt&#250;r Geological Survey in Bratislava and sponsored by the Division of Earth Sciences (UNESCO/Paris) and the International Association of Geochemistry and Cosmochemistry (IAGS). The course was specialized on both theoretical and practical training in classical geochemical prospecting methods.     

9th International Symposium on the Ordovician System, 7th International Graptolite Conference ＆ Field Meeting of the International Subcommission on Silurian Stratigraphy

The “9th International Symposium on the Ordovician System, 7th International Graptolite Conference &amp; Field Meeting of the International Subcommission on Silurian Stratigraphy” commenced on August 12,2003, by receiving in San Juan City to all participants of the pre-symposia field trip through the Precordillera of Mendoza and San Juan provinces, western Argentina. On August 13, the field trip began with the purpose to show significant Lower Paleozoic outcrops from diverse settings of the Precordillera geological province. This fivedays excursion was led by Drs. S. H. Peralta.     

2 nd Mid-European Clay Conference

The 2nd Mid-European Clay Conference (MECC‘04) was held between 20-24th September 2004, in Miskolc, Hungary. The idea to hold common conferences was accepted by the national clay groups of four neighbouring countries, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Croatia, during the EUROCLAY Meeting in Cracow, Poland, in 1999. The first conference was held in 2001 at Star&#225; Lesn&#225;, in the High Tatra Mts. in Slovakia.     

New Progress in Deep Earth Exploration and Application

International Eclogite Field Symposium and Workshop of the Task Force IV, International Lithosphere Program

The 2007 International Eclogite Field Sym- posium held in Portree, Isle of Skye, Scotland from June 29th to July 6th was a joint meeting of the International Eclogite Confer- ence, International Lithosphere Program Task Force IV ＂Ultra-deep Continental Crust Subduction＂, and the Metamorphic Studies Group. First ICSU Regional Meeting for Asiaand the Pacific

The First International Council for Science(ICSU) Regional Meeting for Asia and the Pacific was held from April 25-27, 2005 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The meeting was hosted by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation of Malaysia and the Academy of Sciences Malaysia. Welcoming remarks were delivered by Tan Sri Datuk Dr. Ahmad Zaharudin Idrus, President,Academy of Sciences Malaysia and Prof. Thomas Rosswall, Executive Director,ICSU. His Excellency Dato‘ Sri Dr. Jamaludin Jarjis, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Malaysia opened the meeting.About 40 participants attended the meeting,representing national science academies from the Asia Pacific and international scientific unions that are active in the region. The International Union of Geological Sciences(IUGS) was represented by the President,Prof. Zhang Hongren. Dr. Joy Pereira, Chair of the IUGS Commission on Geoscience for Environmental Management (IUGS-GEM)also attended the meeting as an Observer.

I wish to express my warmest congratulations, on behalf of the Ministry of Land and Resources of China and the Chinese geological community, on the opening of the 31st International Geological Congress. Four years ago, geologists from all over the world gathered in Beijing, China, for the 30th IGC, where discussions were held on a number of frontier issues in the development of geosciences, particularly problems of fundamental geological theories on continent-related     

The medical geology revolution

Because of the importance of geological factors on health an International Working Group on Medical Geology was established in 1998, with the primary aim of increasing awareness of this issue among scientists, medical specialists, and the general public. In 2000 a new project was established by UNESCO. The primary aim of the projects was to bring together, on a global scale, scientists working in this field in developing countries with their colleagues in other parts of the world. The International Council of Scientific Unions （ICSU） also sponsored international short courses in this subject, a cooperation involving The Geological Survey of Sweden, US Geological Survey and the US Armed Forces of Pathology. In 2006 a new association was established： International Medical Geology Association, IMGA. Regional Divisions all over the world have been established. Two text books have been published, the most recent one by Elsevier 2005： Essentials of Medical Geology which has received two prestigious international awards. A website （ http：//www.medicalgeology.org ） and regular newsletters have been published. Short courses on medical geology, have been held since 2001 in more than 30 countries. Medical geology will also be one of the ten main topics within the Year of Planet Earth declared by UN General Assembly December 22, 2005. Medical geology is also one of the five topics within the GeoUnion initiative. The international impact has been tremendous. Universities all around the world are starting courses and education in medical geology, the first centers are under construction, symposias have been held and a world wide collaboration has started between geoscientists, environmental researchers, epidemiologists, toxicologists, pathologists and other scientists.

Tectonic Environments of Cenozoic Volcanic Rocks in China and Characteristics of the Source Regions in the Mantle

Extensive volcanism is one of the important features of Cenozoic geology in China.Based on temporal-spatial distribution,the volcanism was associated with three major different geological settings:1)the continental rift basalts in Northeast and North China;2)the tension-fault basalts on the continental margins of Southeast China; and 3) the collision-zone high-K volcanics in the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau and its vicinities.The characteristics of “depletion in the south and enrichment in the north“of the China continental mantle are strongly supported by isotopic evidence.The Cenozoic continental cal characters,into the following geochemical provinces:1)the depleted mantle in South China;2)the primary mantle in Northeast and NorthChina; 3)the hybrid and transi-tional mantle in the region of Shandong ,Anhui,Jiangsu and northern Zhejiang;4)the depleted mantle around the Bohai Bay and the Lower Liaohe River;5)the K-metasomatic enriched mantle in the northern part of Northeast China;and 6)the re-cycled enriched mantle in the ancient subduction zone in the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau and its surround-ings.These geochemical characteristics on a regional scale must be a reflection of the nature of lithosphere evolution.
