The Niger River delta, one of the largest deltas of the world, is characterized in this article. The geographic features, including the delta hydrographic system, natural and territorial complexes, hydrological regime, and the dynamics of the coastline, are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the assessment of the impact of the following factors on the delta structure and regime: river flow regulation, tides, the ocean level rise, sea waves, natural and human-induced land subsidence.  相似文献

The main features of hydrological processes taking place in the mouth area of the Hong Ha River in Vietnam are considered. The geographic and hydrological conditions in the Hong Ha River basin and in its receiving water body—the Gulf of Tonkin, South China Sea—are briefly characterized. The main features of the mouth area of the Hong Ha River as a specific geographic object are identified. The hydrological regime of the delta and the nearshore zone of the Hong Ha River are described in detail. Water balance of the delta, runoff water levels and delta inundation, water and sediment runoff distributions over delta branches, and the effect of tides, typhoons, and storm surges on delta regime are considered. Present-day problems of the use and protection of natural resources at the Hong Ha River mouth are briefly discussed.  相似文献

The paper considers the major geographic features of the modern Huang He delta, which ranks among the most rapidly varying in the world. The structure of the hydrographic network and the combination of the natural and anthropogenic geosystems of the delta are characterized. The major external riverine and marine, as well as local anthropogenic factors that have affected the development of the Huang He delta in the recent half century are identified. The regularities of the jump-like development of the Huang He delta in the XIX–early XXI centuries are considered. Special attention is paid to the development of the delta after the artificial redistribution of flow in its boundaries in 1996. Satellite images and methods of their interpretation improved by the authors were used. The trends in Huang He delta development are shown to have changed since the last quarter of the XX century under the effect of an abrupt decrease in river sediment load and the growing impact of marine factors. The active progradation of the delta into the sea slowed down significantly, accompanied by erosion and retreat in many segments of its coastline. Huang He delta was used to establish the conditions of changes in the development trends of other deltas under the effect of changes in the climate and economic activity.  相似文献

The mouth of the Vistula River, which is a river outlet located in tideless area, is analyzed. The Vistula River mouth is a man-made, artificial channel which was built in the 19th century in order to prevent the formation of ice jams in the natural river delta. Since the artificial river outlet was constructed, no severe ice-related flood risk situations have ever occurred. However, periodic ice-related phenomena still have an impact on the river operation. In the paper, ice processes in the natural river delta are presented first to refer to the historical jams observed in the Vistula delta. Next, the calibrated mathematical model was applied to perform a series of simulations in the Vistula River mouth for winter storm condition to determine the effects of ice on the water level in the Vistula River and ice jam potential of the river outlet.  相似文献

The basic peculiarities of the hydrological regime of one of the largest mouth areas of the world, i.e., the common mouth of the rivers of Ganges and Brahmaputra, are discussed. The main features of natural conditions (including climatic) of the mouth of these rivers and the delta drainage system are characterized. The hydrological regime of the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers, the largest rivers of South Asia, is studied in greater detail; the quantitative assessments of the water and sediment runoff of these rivers are specified. Provision is made for revealing the basic peculiarities of river flow distribution among numerous delta branches, annual floods during southwest monsoons, tidal phenomena in the maritime zone of the delta, and disastrous storm surges and inundations in the period of tropical cyclones. Flood control measures taken in Bangladesh to protect the population and lands are described.  相似文献

Isotopic examination (delta(13)C and delta(15)N) of organic matter sources and consumers was used to assess the impact and trace the dispersal of wastewater from a land-based fish farm in western Mediterranean. The results provide evidence of the non-negligible effect of aquaculture facilities on the natural stable isotopic composition of organisms. Aquaculture waste entered the food web, altering the natural isotopic composition of organic matter sources at the base and the upper trophic levels. Nitrogen-rich fish waste mainly affected delta(15)N values, while delta(13)C showed less alteration. Waste seemed to disperse widely enough to affect the isotopic composition at the study site about 500 m from the outfall, while sites at 1 and 2 km from the outfall showed values that were similar to each other and different from those of the impacted site. The impact was detected at different ecosystem levels, although primary producers were more affected by fish farm waste taking up aquaculture-derived nutrients.  相似文献

The peculiarities of the hydrological regime of the delta and near-shore zone of the Po River are discussed. The intrusion of salt seawater into the delta is described. The history of the Po Delta formation has been restored on the basis of the analysis of historical, archeological, and cartographic data. As shown, the peculiarities of hydrological and morphological processes in the Po River mouth are associated with natural and specifically with human-induced variations in sediment runoff of the river, with levee construction along branches, subsidence of deltaic deposits, and eustatic rise of the sea level.  相似文献

Desertification of delta landscapes, mainly soil cover, is considered on the example of the Ili River, which basin is located in Kazakhstan and China. Long-term researches on the Ili River were begun in 1968 before creation of the large Kapchagay reservoir and proceed with the use of the space imagery NASA/MODIS/Terra. Degradation of delta landscapes is differentiated in space and in time depending on the features of the natural water regime and its transformation because of flow regulation. The main accent in research has been made on the newest processes of desertification, caused by intensification of irrigation. Data on the concentration and composition of aliphatic and polyaromatic hydrocarbons in the surface layer and the body of bottom sediments in Volga delta and on the northern Caspian shelf are given. Volga delta sediments are shown to contain large concentrations of organic compounds. It is established that the concentrations of organic compounds is largely dependent on the dispersiveness of sediments. Anthropogenic hydrocarbons, both oil and pyrogenic, fail to pass the marginal filter of the Volga River and do not reach the open part of the sea. Therefore, the hydrocarbons contained in the bottom sediments on the Caspian Sea shelf are mostly of natural genesis. The distribution of organic compounds in the bottom sediment strata has a complex character. In some cases, their concentration increases because of the higher flux of hydrocarbons (especially, polyarenes in the 1950s).  相似文献

The salinization of rivers, as indicated by salinity increases in the downstream direction, is characteristic of arid and semiarid regions throughout the world. Historically, salinity increases have been attributed to various mechanisms, including (1) evaporation and concentration during reservoir storage, irrigation, and subsequent reuse; (2) displacement of shallow saline ground water during irrigation; (3) erosion and dissolution of natural deposits; and/or (4) inflow of deep saline and/or geothermal ground water (ground water with elevated water temperature). In this study, investigation of salinity issues focused on identification of relative salinity contributions from anthropogenic and natural sources in the Lower Rio Grande in the New Mexico-Texas border region. Based on the conceptual model of the system, the various sources of water and, therefore, salinity to the Lower Rio Grande were identified, and a sampling plan was designed to characterize these sources. Analysis results for boron (delta(11)B), sulfur (delta(34)S), oxygen (delta(18)O), hydrogen (delta(2)H), and strontium ((87)Sr/(86)Sr) isotopes, as well as basic chemical data, confirmed the hypothesis that the dominant salinity contributions are from deep ground water inflow to the Rio Grande. The stable isotopic ratios identified the deep ground water inflow as distinctive, with characteristic isotopic signatures. These analyses indicate that it is not possible to reproduce the observed salinization by evapotranspiration and agricultural processes alone. This investigation further confirms that proper application of multiple isotopic and geochemical tracers can be used to identify and constrain multiple sources of solutes in complex river systems.  相似文献

Theoretical principles of the sediment budget at river mouths and the role of deltas in the deposition of river sediments are discussed. The results of the quantitative assessment of sediment budget components at river deltas are given. The article shows the impact of such natural factors as delta sizes, peculiarities of their topography and hydrographic system, as well as a series of anthropogenic factors, including diking, water intake structures, etc., on the role of deltas in sediment retention.  相似文献

Peculiarities of the development of the Kura Delta over the last 200 years are discussed. As shown, changes in the delta were greatly affected by the Caspian Sea level drop during 1929–1977 and its rise during 1978–1995 as well as by natural and human-induced variations in the water and sediment runoff of the river. It was noted that the delta area decreased by nearly 40% as a result of the sea level rise. The following significant changes in the Kura Delta were revealed in recent years using space images: river water rushed through the right mouth spit and, hence, the main Southeastern Branch was devoid of its flow and a new sea spit began its formation in the branch mouth using wave-cut products.  相似文献

The macrotidal Colorado River Delta at the northern end of the Gulf of California in Mexico is hydrologically complex. We review historical accounts, data, field notes and photographs to evaluate the hydrological processes active on the delta prior to the advent of upstream dams. We also employ satellite imagery as well as recent LIDAR data to illustrate the critical role played by headcut erosion in restoring the river's fluvial/tidewater connection during the 1979–1988 floods. Prior to human manipulation, the river's contribution of fresh water to the Gulf was periodically interrupted by natural overflowing, avulsing, and flooding into the sub-sea level Salton Sink on the north slope of the delta plain. River flow south towards the Gulf was also subject to occasional overflow into Laguna Salada, another sub-sea level basin. In the mid-20th century, the Delta was disconnected from its fluvial supply following installation of upstream dams and reservoirs. A tidal sediment obstruction developed in the estuary channel, forming a final barrier to fluvial connectivity. Release of Colorado River floodwaters into Mexico between 1979 and 1988 provided a natural experiment on the hydrological response of a long-disconnected macrotidal delta to restoration of fluvial supply.  相似文献

The problem of assessment of sea level rise impact on the hydrological regime and morphological structure of river deltas is discussed. Studies of the response of river deltas, which are among the most vulnerable natural objects, to the sea level rise has become urgent because of the global climate warming and the associated acceleration of the World Ocean level rise. Methods are described that can be used for the analysis, calculation, and prediction of sea level rise impact on submergence of deltas, propagation of backwater from the sea tides, surges, and salt seawater intrusion. Special emphasis is given to channel processes in delta branches, which accompany sea level rise, as well as to delta coastline erosion and flow redistribution among branches. In the course of research, due consideration was taken of the experience gained in studying the response of river deltas on the Caspian Sea coasts to the recent considerable level rise in this water body.  相似文献

The major hydrological and geographic characteristics of the Godavari River and the coastal zone of the Bay of Bengal that have their effect on the hydrological regime and the morphological structure of the river delta are considered. The hydrographic, climatic, and environmental conditions in the Godavari delta are described. The specific features of hydrological processes in the delta are considered, including river and bay water mixing and the impact of tropic storms and hurricanes on the delta. The main features of morphological processes in the delta are revealed, including cyclic changes in the delta in Holocene and the dynamics of the channel network and delta coastline in the past 150 years. It is shown that the processes of erosion and retreat of the delta coastline became more active in the late XX century.  相似文献

A typification of inundations in Kuban River delta is proposed. The causes, recurrence, and the specific features of its manifestation in the delta are discussed for each identified type of inundations. The efficiency of the existing measures for inundation control is assessed. The present-day conveying capacity of major delta branches is evaluated; jam-formation processes in the delta are studied. The causes, manifestation character, and consequences of extreme inundations of 1969 and 2002 are considered in detail. As the result, recommendations are proposed for the prevention or mitigation of damage caused by runoff and mixed-type inundations.  相似文献

The preliminary results of paleomagnetic and radiocarbon dating of late pleistocene-holocene sediments from two lakes of south-western Argentina (41°S, 71.5°W) are presented. The magnetic susceptibility, intensity and direction of the natural remanent magnetisation were measured. The stability of the natural remanent magnetisation was investigated by alternating field demagnetisation. The magnetic parameters allowed the cores within each lake to be correlated. 13 C analysis, total organic content measurements and C 14 dating were carried out. A model of sedimentation is suggested. Using this model and the correlation, curves of variations of magnetic inclination and declination in time are shown.  相似文献
