Abstract The chronological characteristics of Alpine metamorphic rocks are described and Alpine metamorphic events are reinterpreted on the basis of chronological data for the western and central Alps from 1960 to 1992. Metamorphic rocks of the Lepontine, Gran San Bernardo, Piemonte, Internal Crystalline Massifs and Sesia-Lanzo mostly date Alpine metamorphic events, but some (along with granitoids and gneisses from the Helvetic and Southern Alps) result from the Variscan, Caledonian or older events and thus predate the Alpine events. Radiometric age data from the Lepontine area show systematic age relations: U-Pb monazite (23-29 Ma), Rb-Sr muscovite (15–40 Ma) and biotite (15–30 Ma), K-Ar biotite (10-30 Ma), muscovite (15–25 Ma) and hornblende (25-35 Ma), and FT zircon (10-20 Ma) and apatite (5-15 Ma), which can be explained by the different closure temperatures of the isotopic systems. A 121 Ma U-Pb zircon age for a coesite-bearing whiteschist (metaquartzite) from the Dora-Maira represents the peak of ultra-high pressure metamorphism. Coesite-free eclogites and blueschists related to ultra-high pressure rocks in the Penninic crystalline massifs yield an 40Ar- 39Ar plateau age of about 100 Ma for phengites, interpreted as the cooling age. From about 50 Ma, eclogites and glaucophane schists have also been reported from the Piemonte ophiolites and calcschists, suggesting the existence of a second high P/T metamorphic event. Alpine rocks therefore record three major metamorphic events: (i) ultra-high and related high P/T metamorphism in the early Cretaceous, which is well preserved in continental material such as the Sesia-Lanzo and the Penninic Internal Crystalline Massifs; (ii) a second high P/T metamorphic event in the Eocene, which is recognized in the ophiolites and calcschists of the Mesozoic Tethys; and (iii) medium P/T metamorphism, in which both types of high P/T metamorphic rocks were variably reset by Oligocene thermal events. Due to the mixture of minerals formed in the three metamorphic events, there is a possibility that almost all geochronological data reported from the Alpine metamorphic belt show mixed ages. Early Cretaceous subduction of a Tethyan mid-ocean ridge and Eocene continental collision triggered off the exhumation of the high pressure rocks. 相似文献

Volcanic rocks from six of the currently or recently active volcances of the Mariana Island are show little variation in major element abundances. SiO2 content averages 51.5 wt.%. The flows are high in Al 2O (mean 17.7 wt.%) and Fe oxides (mean 10.1 wt.% calculated as FeO only), and moderate in MgO content (mean 4.7 wt.%), Na 2O (mean 2.7 wt.%), and K 2O (mean 0.7 wt.%). Only the rocks from Farallon de Pajaros, the northernmost of the Mariana Islands, deviate slightly from the average of the analyses. Three analyses from this island are slightly higher in SiO2 (about 54 wt.%) and Al 2O 3, and are lower in total Fe oxides and MgO. According to preferred classification, the lavas of the Mariana Islands can be termed mela-andesites, high-alumina basalts, or calc-alkaline (orogenic) basalts. The K 2O values (mean 0.7 wt.%) obtained from lavas of the Mariana Islands are significantly higher than the K 2O values (about 0.33 wt.%) from volcanics of the Izu chain to the north. Inasmuch as the substantial scatter in location of earthquake foci beneath both arcs prevents accurate delineation of the upper boundary of the Benioff zone, it presently cannot be determined whether this discrepancy in K 2O values reflects a difference in depth from the volcanic are to the dipping seismic zone or relates to other phenomena. The older volcanic islands within the Mariana-Bonin island chain apparently defined an island arc system during Eocene to Miocene time. This indicates that the present plane of convergence between the Pacific plate and the Philippine Sea plate has defined the convergence between these plates since Eocene time. 相似文献

Magnetic measurements over the Campbell Plateau, New Zealand, show the existence of a linear positive anomaly belt which extends for 900 km along an approximately east-west trend. This anomaly belt is considered to be a continuation of the Stokes Magnetic Anomaly occurring through New Zealand and associated with rocks of the New Zealand Geosyncline. If this is so, a transcurrent fault with a dextral displacement of about 330 km and aligned in a northeast-southwest direction must occur between the eastern end of the Stokes Magnetic Anomaly and the western end of the anomaly belt across Campbell Plateau. 相似文献

Palaeomagnetic investigations of highly oxidized interbasaltic horizons and associated Lower Tertiary lavas from the Faeroe Islads suggest a long history of magnetization. The remanence directions are composed mostly of two deviating directions of opposite polarities aligned along an axis which palaeomagnetically appears to be younger than that of the original field. This, in addition to the observation that both the baking and baked rocks in most cases show almost identical directional trends upon demagnetization, questions the general validity of the baked contact test. It is suggested that to a major extent post-baking processes, such as low-temperature oxidation and precipitation of ferric oxides, have remagnetized the lavas as well as the tuff layers. Only two of the seven interbasaltic horizons investigated appear to have retained the ‘primary’ magnetization. It is concluded that besides a high bulk oxidation state (induced prior to, or as a result of baking) a “hornfelsic” nature of the baked sediments may be a necessary requirement for establishing primary palaeomagnetic directions in many volcanic regions. 相似文献

40Ar- 30Ar and Sr isotope analyses have been made for ultramatic nodules in basaltic rocks from Itinome-gata and the Oki-Dōgo Island, northeast and southwest of Japan respectively, in order to examine the state of the upper mantle under the Japanese Islands. 40Ar- 30Ar analyses have revealed that ultramafic nodules from Oki-Dōgo Island were involved in events which caused Ar redistribution in these rocks and probably were related to their formation not older than several tens of millions of years ago. These nodules are relatively depleted in both Rb and Sr contents together with some other incompatible elements compared to similar nodules from the other regions in the world. This may be typical for ultramafic nodules from the Japanese Islands. Ultramafic nodules show mostly a little higher 87Sr/ 86Sr ratios (0.704–0.706) than those of host basaltic rocks (0.703–0.705) indicating the accidental origin for these nodules. Present results also suggest both horizontal and vertical inhomogeneities of the uppermost part of the mantle with respect to Sr isotopes on a regional scale. Hence, the ultramafic nodules in volcanic rocks may not always directly represent the upper mantle materials from which the magma is produced at present. Such ultramafic nodules might be relatively old material from the uppermost part of the mantle under the Japanese Islands. 相似文献

Reconstructions of the southeastern margin of Gondwanaland require either a separation of East and West Antarctica or movement between the Lord Howe Rise and the Campbell Plateau. Previous plate tectonic reconstructions based on sea-floor spreading data eliminated the Lord Howe Rise-Campbell Plateau separation prior to 36 m.y. ago because of overlap. This conclusion is dependent on the reconstruction of Australia and Antarctica, interpretation of magnetic anomalies between Antarctica and the Campbell Plateau and the nature of the plate boundary in New Zealand. Revised reconstructions of the fit between Australia and Antarctica, and a reinterpretation of the magnetic anomalies between the Campbell Plateau and Antarctica suggest that there is no problem of overlap between the Lord Howe Rise and the Campbell Plateau, and that continued motion between these plates prior to 36 m.y. ago is a more plausible alternative to separation between East and West Antarctica. 相似文献

Eleven whole rock Rb/Sr age determinations from the Chilean metamorphic basement — formerly considered as Precambrian — define two limiting reference isochrons of 342 and 273 my. Analized rocks are phyllites and schists of sedimentary origin with mineralogical assemblages mainly corresponding to the greenschist facies. Two metamorphic series characterize the Chilean metamorphic basement: an eastern low P/T series, and a western high P/T series. Four of the analyzed samples belong to the former and seven to the latter. The obtained age is interpreted as the age of a main metamorphic episode of the basement. This episode would have taken place in the Upper Paleozoic. 相似文献

87Sr/ 86Sr ratios in the island-arc tholeiite series from the South Sandwich Islands cluster about a value of 0.7040. There is no apparent correlation of strontium isotope values with any major chemical component or with Rb/Sr ratios. The uniformity of the 87Sr/ 86Sr values is consistent with the fractional crystallization relationship previously proposed for this suite. Though higher than values reported for ocean-floor tholeiites they are not significantly different from ratios reported for calc-alkaline island-arcs. 相似文献

Measurements of stable isotope compositions and water contents of boninite series volcanic rocks from the island of Chichi-jima, Bonin Islands, Japan, confirm that a large amount (1.6–2.4 wt.%) of primary water was present in these unusual magmas. An enrichment of 0.6‰ in 18O during differentiation is explained by crystallization of 18O-depleted mafic phases. Silicic glasses have elevated δ18O values and relatively low δD values indicating that they were modified by low-temperature alteration and hydration processes. Mafic glasses, on the other hand, have for the most part retained their primary isotopic signatures since Eocene time. Primary δD values of −53 for boninite glasses are higher than those of MORB and suggest that the water was derived from subducted oceanic lithosphere. 相似文献

The palaeomagnetism of Middle Triassic (224 ± 5 m.y.) igneous rocks from the Ischigualasto-Ischichuca Basin (67°40′W, 30°20′S) was investigated through 86 oriented hand samples from 11 sites. At least one reversal of the geomagnetic field has been found in these rocks. Nine sites yield a palaeomagnetic pole at 239°E, 79°S (α 95 = 15°, k = 13).The K-Ar age determinations of five igneous units of the Puesto Viejo Formation give a mean age of 232 ± 4 m.y. (Early Triassic). The palaeomagnetism of six igneous units of the Puesto Viejo Formation (68°W, 35°S) was investigated through 60 oriented samples. These units, two reversed relative to the present magnetic field of the Earth and four normal, yield a pole at 236°E, 76°S (α 95 = 18°, k = 14).Data from the Puesto Viejo Formation indicate, for the first time on the basis of palaeomagnetic and radiometric data, that the Illawarra Zone, which defines the end of the Kiaman Magnetic Interval, extends at least down to 232 ± 4 m.y. within the Early Triassic. The palaeomagnetic poles for the igneous rocks of the Ischigualasto-Ischichuca Basin and Puesto Viejo Formation form an “age group” with the South American Triassic palaeomagnetic poles (mean pole position: 239°E, 77°S; α 95 = 6.6°, k = 190). The Middle and Upper Permian, Triassic and Middle Jurassic palaeomagnetic poles for South America would define a “time group” reflecting a quasi-static interval (mean pole position: 232°E, 81°S; α 95 = 4°, k = 131). 相似文献

Accurate pressure–temperature–time ( P–T–t) paths of rocks from sedimentation through maximum burial to exhumation are needed to determine the processes and mechanisms that form high‐pressure and low‐temperature type metamorphic rocks. Here, we present a new method combining laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (LA–ICP–MS) U–Pb with fission track (FT) dates for detrital zircons from two psammitic rock samples collected from the Harushinai unit of the Kamuikotan metamorphic rocks. The concordant zircon U–Pb ages for these samples vary markedly, from 1980 to 95 Ma, with the youngest age clusters in both samples yielding Albian‐Cenomanian weighted mean ages of 100.8 ± 1.1 and 99.3 ± 1.0 Ma (2σ uncertainties). The zircon U–Pb ages were not reset by high‐ P/T type metamorphism, because there is no indication of overgrowth within the zircons with igneous oscillatory zoning. Therefore, these weighted mean ages are indicative of the maximum age of deposition of protolithic material. By comparison, the zircon FT data yield a pooled age of ca. 90 Ma, which is almost the same as the weighted mean age of the youngest U–Pb age cluster. This indicates that the zircon FT ages were reset at ca. 90 Ma while still at their source, but have not been reset since. This conclusion is supported by recorded temperature conditions of less than about 300 °C (the closure temperature of zircon FTs), as estimated from microstructures in the deformed detrital quartz grains in psammitic rocks, and no shortening of fission track lengths in the zircon. Combining these new data with previously reported white mica K–Ar ages indicates that the Harushinai unit was deposited after ca. 100 Ma, and underwent burial to its maximum depth before being subjected to a localized thermal overprint during exhumation at ca. 58 Ma. 相似文献

Quaternary lavas from the Northern Mariana Islands have respective O- and S-isotope ranges ofδ 18O = +5.7 to +6.6 (‰ SMOW) andδ 34S = +2.0to+20.7 (‰ CDT). Chemically evolved andesites and dacites with meanδ 18O = +6.3 ± 0.2 are slightly enriched in 18O with respect to unfractionated basalts of<53%SiO 2 with meanδ 18O = +6.0 ± 0.1. This 18O enrichment can be explained in terms of differentiation of parental mafic magmas havingδ 18O values between +5.7 to +6.2‰ through closed-system crystal fractionation because the lavas from all nine islands of the arc define a coherentδ 18OSiO 2 trend. The S-isotope composition of oxidized magmas is not modified extensively through the degassing of SO 2; therefore, the meanδ 34S value of ca. +11‰ for the Mariana lavas is considered to be representative of their source region. The enrichment of 18O and 34S in Mariana Arc parental magmas relative to ocean floor basalts withδ 18O ca. + 5.7‰ andδ 34S = ca.0.3‰ is attributed to the recycling of 18O- and 34S-rich crustal components (sediment withδ 18O = ca. + 25‰ and seawater sulfate withδ 34S = ca. +20‰ into the upper mantle source region for these arc magmas. This interpretation is consistent with enrichments of radiogenic Sr and Pb in the same lavas relative to ocean-floor basalts erupted either side of the arc, which are presumed to share a common upper mantle source. This enrichment is considered to reflect the mixing of two components, one having a typical upper mantle composition and the other having a more radiogenic character similar to that of western Pacific pelagic sediments. 相似文献

Carriacou is small volcanic island located near the southern end of the Lesser Antillean chain. Field relationships, petrography and geochemistry of the Tertiary lavas, outcropping in the southern half of the island, are used to identify the rocks present and to determine their petrogenesis and assess their significance within the island arc.Six main volcanic units are present. From oldest to youngest, these are the clinopyroxene-phyric basalt (CPB) sequence, the amphibole-phyric andesite (APA) sequence, the clinopyroxene-megaphyric basalt (CMB) sequence, the olivine-microphyric basalt (OMB) sequence, the clinopyroxene phyric andesite (CPA) sequence, and the amphibole-megaphyric andesite (AMA) sequence. Volcaniclastic deposits are associated with the APA, CMB, and AMA sequences. The APA sequence is calcalkaline, whereas the other five sequences are tholeiitic.Sr isotope and rare earth element (REE) data suggest that these volcanic rocks were derived from partial melts of garnet-peridotite generated deep within the mantle. The OMB lavas have the highest temperature assemblages of intratelluric minerals and the least evolved chemical characteristics, and are considered to be closest in composition to a parental melt. Phenocryst assemblages and chemical variation suggest that the andesite sequences have been derived from the mafic melts by low pressure fractional crystallization of approximately 20% clinopyroxene and 20% olivine, plus smaller amounts of plagioclase and amphibole. The high concentrations of incompatible and compatible elements and the high 87Sr/ 86Sr ratios may indicate that subduction is slower in the southern part of the arc, and fluids released during slab dehydration rich in Incompatible trace elements, in Radiogenic strontium, and in Silica (IRS), have modified the parental melts. 相似文献

The δ 18O values of eighteen marine evaporites of Precambrian to Recent ages were found to vary from +8 to 25‰ relative to SMOW, while the δ 34S values previously measured by Thode and Monster [2] vary from +10 to +38‰ relative to meteoritic sulfur. The results strongly suggest that the δ 18O value of ocean sulfate varied with geologic age with a minimum at the Permian age. 相似文献

K/Ar-determinations, major and trace element chemical analyses and magnetic data are reported for rocks from Santa Maria (Azores), Madeira and Porto Santo, and Gran Canaria. Based on these data, the age of the basement of Santa Maria is believed to have formed between about 5.2. and 4.6 m.y.; the unconformably overlying pillow complex interbedded with fossiliferous calcarenites about 3.8 to 3.3 m.y. with the capping subaerial basalt being part of the same magmatic phase. The major erosional phase levelling the basement is thus approximately synchronous with the major Pliocene regression (R2) on Gran Canaria ( Lietz and Schmincke, 1975), possibly indicating a widespread eustatic event. The upper part of the submarine, partly fossiliferous series of Porto Santo was dated as ca. 12 to 13 m.y., and the Quaternary age for the major basalt formation in Eastern Madeira ( Watkins and Abdel Monem, 1971) is confirmed. The ages of several formations on Gran Canaria were slightly revised. Chemical differences between basement (shield) and later posterosional series on Gran Canaria are re-emphasized by the new data, while such differences are much less pronounced between the basement and younger series on Santa Maria. 相似文献

3He/4He ratios have been measured for olivine and clinopyroxene phenocrysts in 7–15 m.y. old basaltic lavas from the island of St. Helena. Magmatic helium was effectively resolved from post-eruptive radiogenic helium by employing various extraction techniques, including in vacuo crushing, and stepwise heating or fusion of the powders following crushing. The inherited 3He/4He ratio at St. Helena is 4.3–5.9 R A. Helium isotope disequilibrium is present within the phenocrysts, with lower 3He/4He upon heating and fusion of the powders following crushing, due to radiogenic ingrowth or to -particle implantation from the surrounding (U + Th)-rich lavas. A single crushing analysis for clinopyroxene in a basalt from Tubuaii gave3He/4He= 7.1 RA.3He/4He ratios at St. Helena and Tubuaii (HIMU hotspots characterized by radiogenic Pb isotope signatures) are similar to3He/4He ratios previously measured at Tristan da Cunha and Gough Island (EM hotspots characterized by low206Pb/204Pb). Overall, the HeSrPb isotope systematics at these islands are consistent with a mantle origin as contiguous, heterogeneous materials, such as recycled crust and/or lithosphere.3He/4He ratios at HIMU hotspots are similar to mantle xenoliths which display nearly the entire range of Pb isotope compositions found at ocean islands, and are only slightly less than values found in mid-ocean ridge basalts (7–9 RA). This suggests that the recycled materials were injected into the mantle within the last 109 yrs. 相似文献

This paper reports clear correlation between the magnetic and mineralogical properties of some basaltic rocks from Egypt. Although all the measured samples are reversely magnetized lavas, yet clear differences were found between them. A four-fold classification based on the nature of both titanomagnetite and discrete ilmenite grains is given. The classification is based mainly on the differentiation between the different stages of oxidation and these were found to be in accordance with the intensity of magnetization and susceptibility values. 相似文献

Paleomagnetic measurements have been carried out on six samples of Early Triassic age and five samples of Middle Triassic age from East Greenland. The mean stable remanent magnetization directions obtained after alternating-field demagnetization tests give the virtual geomagnetic pole positions as: (1) 49°N, 158°E for the Middle Triassic and (2) 34° 30′N, 176°W for the Early Triassic. The Greenland Triassic paleomagnetic results have been compared with those for Europe and North America. It is inferred from this comparison that these preliminary results for Greenland do not conform with the requirements of a reconstruction based on a geometrical fit of the three landmasses. 相似文献

This paper extends the evidence that volcanic rocks may contain initial argon, and investigates some of the implications of the results. The incorporation of initial argon with a composition different to that of air at the time of crystallisation may be an important cause of scatter of K-Ar dates in areas such as the British Tertiary igneous province, but in favourable circumstances the correct age may be recovered. An age of about 60 Ma is indicated for the lavas of Northern Ireland. 相似文献
