The only reliable method for dating kimberlites at present is the lengthy and specialized hydrothermal procedure that extracts206Pb and238U from low-uranium zircons. This paper describes a second successful method by fission track dating of large single-crystal zircons, 1.0–1.5 cm in dimension. The use of large crystals overcomes the limitations imposed in conventional fission track analysis which utilizes crushed fragments. Low track densities, optical track dispersion, and the random orientation of polished surfaces in the etch and irradiation cycle are effectively overcome.Fission track ages of zircons from five African kimberlites are reported, from the Kimberley Pool (90.3 ± 6.5 m.y.), Orapa (87.4 ± 5.7 and 92.4 ± 6.1 m.y.), Nzega (51.1 ± 3.8 m.y.), Koffiefontein (90.0 ± 8.2 m.y.), and Val do Queve (133.4 ± 11.5 m.y.). In addition we report the first radiometric ages (707.9 ± 59.6 and 705.5 ± 61.0 m.y.) of crustal zircons from kimberlites in northwest Liberia. The fission track ages agree well with earlier age estimates. Most of the zircons examined in this study are zoned with respect to uranium but linear correlations are established (by regression analysis) between zones of variable uranium content, and within zones of constant uranium content (by analysis of variance). Concordance between the fission track method and the U/Pb technique is established and we concluded that track fading from thermal annealing has not taken place. Kimberlitic zircons dated in this study, therefore, record the time of eruption.  相似文献

Six samples of metamorphic rocks from three essentially coeval stratigraphic units, two of which contain Precambrian microfossils, have been analyzed by the Rb-Sr whole-rock radiometric method. Least-squares regression of the data yields an isochron date of 934 ± 80m.y. with initial 87Sr/86Sr= 0.7007 ± 0.0011. This date may reflect the approximate age of formation of these rocks or, alternately, a time of major metamorphism. Regardless, the date is significant in that it (a) is in agreement with the 900-m.y. date for rocks containing similar types of fossils from Bitter Springs, Australia, and (b) coupled with structural evidence, supports the time equivalence of these rocks with 1000-m.y. old rocks (“Kibaran cycle”) of Saudi Arabia.  相似文献

The rocks outcropping along the Kombolcha-Eloa traverse (western Afar, Ethiopia) can be attributed chiefly to the so-called Oligocenic « Alaji Rhyolitic Series » (32–28 m.y. B.P.) and to the overlying « Termaber Basalts » (28–18 m.y. B.P.), these latter being emitted from a central volcano — Mt. Garfa — rising on the Afar margin and tilted during Miocene. The age and the genesis of the dikes crossing the investigated volcanic succession are discussed in the light of the radiometric ages quoted inMegrue et al. (1972), distinguishing the pre-, the syn- and the post-tilt dikes. The dikes connected with a central volcanism are fed by shallow basins, whereas the others, connected with a fissural volcanism, are to be related to strong tensional movements.  相似文献

More than fifty new K-Ar age determinations are reported for mineral separates and whole-rock samples from igneous and metamorphic basement rocks of northwestern Argentina and contiguous Chile between 25° and 30°S. The age data define three thermal events, occurring in the late Ordovician-Silurian (400–450 m.y.), mid-Carboniferous (310–340 m.y.) and Permian (225–270 m.y.), and confirm deductions of previous workers that the crystalline basement rocks of the Pampean Ranges of northwestern Argentina are not of Precambrian age, but rather evolved predominantly during the Palaeozoic. The proposed radiometric age provinces and the inferred orogenic history of the area are compared with those for the rest of South America, and it is confirmed that, by the late Ordovician, the focus of major orogenic activity in South America was located along the present western and southern margins of the craton, and tended to migrate westwards during the Palaeozoic.  相似文献

39Ar-40Ar ages and37Ar-38Ar exposure ages of samples representing four different lithologies of the Apollo 17 station 7 boulder were measured. The age of the dark veinlet material77015of3.98 ± 0.04AE is interpreted as representing the time of intrusion of this veinlet into the 77215 clast. The data obtained so far indicate that the vesicular basalt 77135 formed 100–200 m.y. later. However, this has to be confirmed by39Ar-40Ar investigations on separated mineral and/or grain-size fractions. A small clast enclosed in the 77135 basalt gives a well-defined high temperature age of3.99 ± 0.02AE. A sample of the noritic clast 77215 gave4.04 ± 0.03AE, the highest age found so far in this boulder. The39Ar-40Ar ages obtained are in agreement with the age relationships deduced from the stratigraphic evidence.Taking into account the shielding by the boulder itself, an average37Ar-38Ar exposure age of(27.5 ± 2.5)m.y. is obtained for the samples collected from the boulder.  相似文献

Rb-Sr whole-rock analyses yield a Cambro-Ordovician (495 ± 11 m.y.) sedimentation age for the supposed Precambrian Greenland Group and a late Precambrian age, 680 ± 21 m.y., for parts of the Constant Gneiss, the first confirmation of Precambrian rocks in New Zealand. A Precambrian age for the Greenland Group is thus unlikely and the large area of Upper Cambrian-Lower Ordovician rocks now established can be considered as a lateral equivalent of the fossiliferous Lower Palaeozoic succession of northwest Nelson to the east. The Greenland Group, especially in the Paparoa Range has been affected subsequently by a thermal metamorphic overprint about 360 m.y. ago during the Tuhuan Orogeny. Although the Constant Gneiss must form the local basement to the Greenland Group in north Westland, the former does not appear to be the source of the sediments and the true provenance must lie elsewhere.  相似文献

The Caledonian Jotun nappe in the Tyin area of southern Norway has been investigated using U-Pb analysis of zircon and sphene and Rb-Sr measurements of minerals and whole rocks, with special reference to the reaction of the isotope systems to various kinds of metamorphic event. The nappe consists of Precambrian basement rocks and their cover, inversely thrust over the Baltic shield and its parautochthonous, presumably lower Paleozoic sediments during the Caledonian orogeny. While the nappe basement retained its pre-Caledonian structures, the nappe cover was penetratively deformed and metamorphosed to lower greenschist facies conditions.U-Pb analyses of zircon and sphene ofnappe basement rocks point to the crystallization of a syenitic to monzonitic magma at 1694± 20m.y., the intrusion of gabbros into the syenites and monzonites at 1252?25+28 m.y., and the metamorphism (upper greenschist-lower amphibolite facies) and deformation (gneissification and mylonitization) of the whole complex at 909± 16m.y. Although this latest event caused strong lead loss in all zircon populations, it had no influence on the Rb-Sr system on a whole rock scale. The Caledonian movements did not disturb the U-Pb system of zircon and sphene but strongly influenced the Rb-Sr system in certain minerals and zircon and/or its inclusions (K-feldspar and brown biotite partially, green biotite completely reset). In contrast to the nappe basement, zircons from thecover rocks show pronounced lead loss during the Caledonian metamorphism/deformation — U-Pb analysis give discordia lower intercept ages of 415± 21 m.y. and 395± 6m.y. Again, however, the Rb-Sr whole-rock system has not been reset in Caledonian time. Minerals from the same rocks which provided the zircons give Rb-Sr isochron ages of 390± 11m.y. and 386 ± 20 m.y.Comparison of U-Pb and Rb-Sr results from the nappe basement demonstrates that only the analysis of U-Pb systematics in zircon and especially sphene resolved the 900-m.y. event. Rb-Sr mineral data alone yield ambiguous results. The results from the nappe cover confirm that U-Pb analyses from penetratively deformed sediments are very useful in dating a metamorphic/tectonic event in lower greenschist facies conditions. From the measured cell dimensions of the zircon populations it is concluded that lead can be completely retained in zircon during recrystallization.  相似文献

The palaeomagnetism of Middle Triassic (224 ± 5 m.y.) igneous rocks from the Ischigualasto-Ischichuca Basin (67°40′W, 30°20′S) was investigated through 86 oriented hand samples from 11 sites. At least one reversal of the geomagnetic field has been found in these rocks. Nine sites yield a palaeomagnetic pole at 239°E, 79°S (α95 = 15°, k = 13).The K-Ar age determinations of five igneous units of the Puesto Viejo Formation give a mean age of 232 ± 4 m.y. (Early Triassic). The palaeomagnetism of six igneous units of the Puesto Viejo Formation (68°W, 35°S) was investigated through 60 oriented samples. These units, two reversed relative to the present magnetic field of the Earth and four normal, yield a pole at 236°E, 76°S (α95 = 18°, k = 14).Data from the Puesto Viejo Formation indicate, for the first time on the basis of palaeomagnetic and radiometric data, that the Illawarra Zone, which defines the end of the Kiaman Magnetic Interval, extends at least down to 232 ± 4 m.y. within the Early Triassic. The palaeomagnetic poles for the igneous rocks of the Ischigualasto-Ischichuca Basin and Puesto Viejo Formation form an “age group” with the South American Triassic palaeomagnetic poles (mean pole position: 239°E, 77°S; α95 = 6.6°, k = 190). The Middle and Upper Permian, Triassic and Middle Jurassic palaeomagnetic poles for South America would define a “time group” reflecting a quasi-static interval (mean pole position: 232°E, 81°S; α95 = 4°, k = 131).  相似文献

Whole-rock Rb-Sr age measurements on rocks from the Rhodesian Archaean craton of Southern Africa demonstrate that (a) the Mashaba area gneisses, which are typical of the Rhodesian Basement Complex, are approximately 3600 m.y. old, (b) volcanic rocks from the main greenstone belts, assigned to the Bulawayan Group, were extruded approximately 2600–2700 m.y. ago, (c) a cross-cutting pluton, the Sesombi tonalite, was emplaced2690 ± 70 m.y. ago, (d) the Gwenoro Dam migmatites, which field evidence suggests could be older than the main greenstone belts, were emplaced2780 ± 30 m.y. ago.The initial87Sr/86Sr ratios of most of the rock units of groups b, c and d are in close agreement at about 0.701, suggesting that the later granitic (sensu lato) and andesitic rocks so far analysed were not produced by remelting of, or contamination with, ancient gneissic basement.  相似文献

Migmatitic gneisses of overall intermediate composition occur at Vikan i Bø, North Norway. A Pb-Pb whole-rock isochron on these Vikan Gneisses yields an age of3,460 ± 70m.y. A Rb-Sr whole-rock isochron on the same rock samples yields an age of2,300 ± 150m.y., and an initial87Sr/86Sr ratio of0.7126 ± 0.0011.The geochemical implications of the discordance of the Pb-Pb and Rb-Sr whole-rock ages are discussed, and a timetable of the geological events in the early history of Lofoten-Vestera?len is proposed.  相似文献

Petrographic and chemical evidence suggests that boulders from a conglomeratic unit in the Isua supracrustal succession were derived by the erosion of an acid volcanogenic sediment. Six samples of the boulders and surrounding matrix yield a Rb-Sr whole rock isochron with a slope corresponding to an age of 3860 ± 240 m.y. (2 sigma error), but consideration of the initial87Sr/86Sr ratio constrains the possible age of formation of 3710 ± 900 m.y. This is in general agreement with a published Pb/Pb age of 3760 ± 70 m.y. on Isua banded ironstones.Pb isotope compositions as well as highly fractionated, heavy element depleted, rare earth element abundance patterns for the boulders suggest that their igneous precursors were derived from a source region with a similar geochemical history to that of some components of the 3700–3800 m.y. old Ami?tsoq gneisses, involving fractionation of garnet during their evolution.A Pb/Pb whole-rock isochron for Ami?tsoq gneisses from Isua yields an age of 3800 ± 120 m.y. (2σ), in good agreement with previously published Rb-Sr age data on the same rocks. The rock leads are highly unradiogenic and demonstrate substantial U depletion at least 3800 ± 120 m.y. ago. A two-stage model for the U-Pb system yields an average238U/204Pb (μ1) value of 9.3 ± 0.2 for the source region, which is significantly different from the published value of 9.9 ± 0.1 for the Isua iron formation. This indicates the existence of U-Pb heterogeneities between the source regions of plutonic and supracrustal rocks by about 3700–3800 m.y. ago. Attempts to apply U-Pb whole-rock dating to the Ami?tsoq gneisses were unsuccessful because of geologically recent U loss, possibly due to groundwater leaching.A Rb-Sr whole-rock isochron on a suite of Ami?tsoq gneiss samples from a different locality in the Isua region has yielded an age of 3780 ± 130 m.y.In contrast to the Godthaab area, there is no geochronological evidence at Isua for major rock-producing or tectonothermal events after about 3700 m.y. ago. The entire gneiss-supracrustal system developed within the approximate interval 3900–3700 m.y. ago.  相似文献

Seven LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb datings from granitoids in the southern basement of the Songliao basin were done in order to constrain the ages of the basin basement. The cathodoluminescence (CL) images of the zircons from seven granitoids indicate that they are euhedral-subhedral ones with striped ab-sorption and obvious oscillatory zoning rims. The dating results show that a weighted mean 206Pb/238U age is 236±3 Ma for quartz diorite (sample No.T6-1) located in the western slope of the basin, that weighted mean 206Pb/238U ages are 319±1 Ma (2126 m) and 361±2 Ma (1994 m) for diorite (sample No.YC1-1) and granite (sample No.YC1-2) located in northern part of southeastern uplift of the basin, respectively, and that weighted mean 206Pb/238U ages are 161±5 Ma,165±2 Ma,165±1 Ma and 161±4 Ma for samples Q2-1,SN121,SN122,and SN72 granitoids located in southern part of southeastern uplift of the basin, respectively. The statistical results of ages suggest that the middle Jurassic granitoids con-stitute the main part of basement granitoids, and that the Hercynian and Indo-Sino magmatisms also occur in the basin basement. It is implied that the Songliao basin should be a rift one formed in the intracontinent or active continental margin settings in the late Mesozoic after the Middle Jurassic orogeny took place.  相似文献

K/Ar-determinations, major and trace element chemical analyses and magnetic data are reported for rocks from Santa Maria (Azores), Madeira and Porto Santo, and Gran Canaria. Based on these data, the age of the basement of Santa Maria is believed to have formed between about 5.2. and 4.6 m.y.; the unconformably overlying pillow complex interbedded with fossiliferous calcarenites about 3.8 to 3.3 m.y. with the capping subaerial basalt being part of the same magmatic phase. The major erosional phase levelling the basement is thus approximately synchronous with the major Pliocene regression (R2) on Gran Canaria (Lietz andSchmincke, 1975), possibly indicating a widespread eustatic event. The upper part of the submarine, partly fossiliferous series of Porto Santo was dated as ca. 12 to 13 m.y., and the Quaternary age for the major basalt formation in Eastern Madeira (Watkins andAbdel Monem, 1971) is confirmed. The ages of several formations on Gran Canaria were slightly revised. Chemical differences between basement (shield) and later posterosional series on Gran Canaria are re-emphasized by the new data, while such differences are much less pronounced between the basement and younger series on Santa Maria.  相似文献

K-Ar ages have been determined for sulfide minerals for the first time. The occurrence of adequate amounts of potassium-bearing sulfides with ideal compositions K3Fe10S14 (~10 wt.% K) and KFe2S3 (~16 wt.% K) in samples from a mafic alkalic diatreme at Coyote Peak, California, prompted an attempt to date these materials. K3Fe10S14, a massive mineral with conchoidal fracture, gives an age of 29.4 ± 0.5m.y.(40Ar/39Ar), indistinguishable from the 28.3 ± 0.4m.y.(40Ar/39Ar) and 30.2 ± 1.0m.y.8 (conventional K-Ar) ages obtained for associated phlogopite (8.7 wt.% K). KFe2S3, a bladed, fibrous sulfide, gives a younger age, 26.5 ± 0.5m.y.(40Ar/39Ar), presumably owing to Ar loss.  相似文献

Fission-track dates and planktonic microfossil datum levels provide a revised chronology for the marine Late Cenozoic of southern California. In southern California, the Pliocene/Pleistocene boundary has been placed at the first appearance of Globorotalia truncatulinoides within the Pico Formation, Balcom Canyon, Ventura County. A fission-track age on glass shards from the Bailey Ash close to this level yields a result of 1.12 ± 0.36 m.y. B.P. (millions of years before present). In tropical deep-sea cores, however, G. truncatulinoides has been shown to evolve within the Gilsa paleomagnetic event with an estimated age of 1.8 m.y. B.P. Thus, the first appearance of G. truncatulinoides in southern California is cryptogenic and probably related to the delayed migration into this region of water-mass conditions suitable for this species. Two volcanic ashes from the upper part of the Malaga Formation, Malaga Cove, Los Angeles County, yielded fission-track dates on glass shards of 4.42 ± 0.57 m.y. B.P. (lower ash) and 3.364 ± 0.69 m.y. B.P. (upper ash). These dates, in addition to inferred paleomagnetic ages of planktonic microfossil datum levels suggest that the Delmontian Stage of California ranges in age from ~6 to ~3 m.y. B.P. Therefore, the Miocene/Pliocene boundary considered by Berggren and Van Couvering to be ~5 m.y. B.P. must lie in the lower Delmontian Stage but paleontologic criteria for its recognition in California are not yet available.  相似文献

Fourteen whole-rock samples from three traverses through the contact aureole of the Stillwater Complex were analyzed for Rb, Sr and87Sr/86Sr. Twelve of these samples yielded an age of 2750 ± 45m.y.; (87Sr/86Sr)0 = 0.705 ± 0.003 (2σ). In addition one whole rock and a biotite separate derived from it gave an age of 2544 m.y.; (87Sr/86Sr)0 = 0.714. These data support a minimum age of 2750 m.y. for the intrusion of the complex.  相似文献

Tholeiitic basalts of the Napali Formation comprise the bulk of the Kauai shield volcano. Potassium-argon ages measured on 16 samples from three separate areas in this formation lie in the range 5.14 ± 0.20 to 3.81 ± 0.06 m.y. The scatter in the measured ages in each area is greater than that expected from experimental error alone, and variable loss of radiogenic argon is regarded as at least partly responsible. Nevertheless an interval of eruption in the order of 0.8 m.y. is deduced for the Napali Formation. The results from the Napali Formation taken together with K-Ar ages measured earlier on basalts of the Makaweli Formation, the youngest formation of the dome-building phase, yield a mean age of 4.43 ± 0.45 m.y. for the construction of the main subaerial shield volcano of Kauai. When this result from Kauai is combined with estimates of the average age for the shield-building volcanism in 16 other volcanoes in the Hawaiian island chain, extending over a distance of more than 2800 km, the data are found to conform to migration of the centre of volcanism from north-northwest to south-southeast at a uniform rate of 9.4 (±0.3) cm/yr over the last 28 m.y. Non-linear models of propagation of volcanism in the Hawaiian chain are quite unnecessary, especially when uncertainties in the data base are taken into account. These results are consistent with an origin of the Hawaiian volcanic chain by eruption from a magma source situated below the Pacific lithospheric plate, as proposed under hot spot or plume models. Depending upon choice of the pole for the Pacific plate, rates of rotation about the pole of 0.9° to 1.0°/m.y. are derived. By extrapolation of the Hawaiian Island chain data an age estimate of 37.8 m.y. is derived for the Hawaiian-Emperor Seamount intersection.  相似文献

Proterozoic supracrustal rocks of southwest Greenland and amphibolite dykes intruding the basement possess a thermal remanent magnetisation acquired during slow regional uplift and cooling between 1800 and 1600 m.y. following the Ketilidian mobile episode. Most samples from amphibolite dykes (mean palaeomagnetic pole 214°E, 31°N) possess a stable remanence associated with development of hematite during regional thermal metamorphism. Metavolcanics from the eastern part (eight sites, palaeomagnetic pole 230°E, 60°N, A95 = 15°) and western part (twelve sites, 279°E, 59°N, A95 = 17°) of Ars?k Island have magnetisations postdating folding and are related to KAr ages dating regional cooling (1700-1600 m.y.); magnetic properties are highly variable and partially stable remanence resides predominantly in pyrrhotite. These results agree in part with other palaeomagnetic results from the northern margin of the same craton, and currently available palaeomagnetic results assigned to the interval 1850-1600 m.y. are evaluated to define apparent polar wander movements. Two large polar movements are recognised during this interval with the possibility of a third at ca. 1800 m.y. It is concluded that apparent polar wander movements in Proterozoic times are most accurately described in terms of closed loops.  相似文献

Whole rock and chondrules of the Dhajala chondrite were analyzed for Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe by total melting as well as by stepwise heating techniques. The cosmic ray exposure ages for the whole rock and the chondrules are6.2 ± 0.8 and6.3 ± 1.0m.y. as determined by the21Ne method and4.8 ± 1.5 and4.2 ± 2.0m.y. by the38Ar method, respectively. The K-Ar age of the whole rock is4.2 ± 0.4b.y. The elemental composition of the trapped gas in this chondrite is of “planetary” type. The radiogenic129Xe contents in the whole rock and chondrules are similar and this component is very retentively sited in the chondrules.  相似文献

The U-Pb isotope systematics of uraniferous opals from Spor Mountain, Utah, were investigated to determine the suitability of such material for geochronologic purposes, and to estimate the timing of uranium and associated beryllium and fluorine mineralization. The results indicate that uraniferous opals can approximate a closed system for uranium and uranium daughters, so that dating samples as young as ~1 m.y. should be possible. In addition, the expected lack of initial230Th and231Pa in opals permits valuable information on the initial234U/238U to be obtained on suitable samples of ?10 m.y. age. The oldest207Pb/235U apparent age observed, 20.8 ± 1m.y., was that of the opal-fluorite core of a nodule from a beryllium deposit in the Spor Mountain Formation. This age is indistinguishable from that of fission-track and K-Ar ages from the host rhyolite, and links the mineralization to the first episode of alkali rhyolite magmatism and related hydrothermal activity at Spor Mountain. Successively younger ages of 13 m.y. and 8–9 m.y. on concentric outer zones of the same nodule indicate that opal formed either episodically or continuously for over 10 m.y. Several samples of both fracture-filling and massive-nodule opal associated with beryllium deposits gave207Pb/235U apparent ages of 13–16 m.y., which may reflect a restricted period of mineralization or perhaps an averaging of 21?and<13?m.y. periods of opal growth. Several samples of fracture-filling opal in volcanic rocks as young as 6 m.y. gave207Pb/235U ages of 3.4–4.8 m.y. These ages may reflect hot-spring activity after the last major eruption of alkali rhyolite.  相似文献
