We have cross-matched the 1.4-GHz NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) with the first 210 fields observed in the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS), covering an effective area of 325 deg2 (about 20 per cent of the final 2dFGRS area). This yields a set of optical spectra of 912 candidate NVSS counterparts, of which we identify 757 as genuine radio identifications – the largest and most homogeneous set of radio source spectra ever obtained. The 2dFGRS radio sources span the redshift range to 0.438, and are a mixture of active galaxies (60 per cent) and star-forming galaxies (40 per cent). About 25 per cent of the 2dFGRS radio sources are spatially resolved by NVSS, and the sample includes three giant radio galaxies with projected linear size greater than 1 Mpc. The high quality of the 2dF spectra means we can usually distinguish unambiguously between AGN and star-forming galaxies. We make a new determination of the local radio luminosity function at 1.4 GHz for both active and star-forming galaxies, and derive a local star formation density of . 相似文献

We present new continuum VLA observations of the nearby Sy 1.5 galaxy NGC 5033, made at 4.9 and 8.4 GHz on 2003 April 8. Combined with VLA archival observations at 1.4- and 4.9-GHz made on 1993 August 7, 1999 August 29 and 1999 October 31, we sample the galaxy radio emission at scales ranging from the nuclear regions (≲100 pc) to the outer regions of the disc (∼40 kpc). The high-resolution VLA images show a core–jet structure for the Sy 1.5 nucleus. While the core has a moderately steep non-thermal radio spectrum ( S ν ∝να ; α4.9 1.5 ≈−0.4), the inner kpc region shows a steeper spectrum (α8.4 1.5 ≈−0.9). This latter spectrum is typical of galaxies where energy losses are high, indicating that the escape rate of cosmic ray electrons in NGC 5033 is low. The nucleus contributes little to the total 1.4-GHz radio power of NGC 5033 and, based on the radio to far-infrared (FIR) relation, it appears that the radio and FIR emission from NGC 5033 are dominated by a starburst that during the last 10 Myr produced stars at a rate of 2.8 M⊙ yr−1 yielding a supernova (type Ib/c and II) rate of 0.045 yr−1 . This supernova rate corresponds to about 1 SN event every 22 yr. Finally, from our deep 8.4-GHz VLA-D image, we suggest the existence of a radio spur in NGC 5033, which could have been due to a hot superbubble formed as a consequence of sequential supernova explosions occurring during the lifetime of a giant molecular cloud. 相似文献

Using the “Updated Nearby Galaxy Catalog”, we consider different properties of companion galaxies around luminous hosts in the Local Volume. The data on stellar masses, linear diameters, surface brightnesses, HI‐richness, specific star formation rate (sSFR), and morphological types are discussed for members of the nearest groups, including the Milky Way and M 31 groups, as a function of their separation from the hosts. Companion galaxies in groups tend to have lower stellar masses, smaller linear diameters, and fainter mean surface brightnesses as the distance to their host decreases. The hydrogen‐to‐stellar mass ratio of the companions increases with their linear projected separation from the dominant luminous galaxy. This tendency is more expressed around the bulge‐dominated hosts. While linear separation of the companions decreases, their mean sSFR becomes lower, accompanied with the increasing sSFR scatter. the typical linear projected separation of dSphs around the bulge‐dominated hosts, 350 kpc, is substantially larger than that around the disk‐dominated ones, 130 kpc. This difference probably indicates the presence of larger hot/warm gas haloes around the early‐type host galaxies. The mean fraction of dSph (quenched) companions in the 11 nearest groups as a function of their projected separation Rp can be expressed as ƒ(E) = (0.55–0.69)×Rp. The fraction of dSphs around the Milky Way and M 31 looks much higher than in other nearby groups because the quenching efficiency dramatically increases towards the ultra‐low mass companions. We emphasize that the observed properties of the Local Group are not typical for other groups in the Local Volume due to the role of selection effects caused by our location inside the Local Group. The Eridanus galaxies follow the well-known radio—FIR correlation. The majority (70%) of these galaxies have their star formation
rates below that of the Milky Way. The galaxies that have a significant excess of radio emission are identified as low luminosity
AGNs based on their radio morphologies obtained from the GMRT observations. There are no powerful AGNs (L
20cm > 1023 W Hz−1) in the group. The two most far-infrared and radio luminous galaxies in the group have optical and HI morphologies suggestive
of recent tidal interactions. The Eridanus group also has two far-infrared luminous but radio-deficient galaxies. It is believed
that these galaxies are observed within a few Myr of the onset of an intense star formation episode after being quiescent
for at least a 100 Myr. The upper end of the radio luminosity distribution of the Eridanus galaxies (L
20cm ∼ 1022 W Hz−1) is consistent with that of the field galaxies, other groups, and late-type galaxies in nearby clusters. 相似文献

This paper presents a detailed analysis of the radio properties for the sample of faint radio sources introduced by Magliocchetti et al. in 2000. The sample comprises mainly intrinsically low-power sources, the majority of which (≳70 per cent) are FR I radio galaxies. These objects show some degree (at 1 σ confidence level) of luminosity evolution, which is also needed to reproduce correctly the total number and shape of the counts distribution at 1.4 GHz. Analysis of the de-evolved local radio luminosity function shows a good agreement between data and model predictions for this class of sources. Particular care has been devoted to the issue of 'lined' galaxies (i.e. objects presenting in their spectra a continuum typical of early-type galaxies plus emission lines of different nature), which appear as an intermediate class of sources between AGN-dominated and starburst galaxies. Different evolutionary behaviour is seen in the two subpopulations of lined and non-lined low-power radio galaxies, the first class indicating a tendency for the radio luminosity to decrease with look-back time, the second one showing positive evolution. We note that different evolutionary properties also seem to characterize BL Lacs selected in different bands, so that one might envisage an association between lined FR I and the subclass of BL Lacs selected in the X-ray band. Lastly, we find evidence for a negligible contribution of starburst galaxies at these low flux levels. 相似文献

We report Hα observations of a sample of very isolated blue compact galaxies (BCGs) located in the direction of large cosmic voids obtained to understand their stellar population compositions, the present star formation (SF) properties and their SF histories (SFHs). Our observations were combined with photometric data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and near-infrared data from the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS), wherever such data were available. The combined data sets were compared with predictions of evolutionary synthesis models by Bruzual & Charlot. Current SF rates (SFRs) were determined from the Hα measurements, and simplified SFHs were derived from broad-band and Hα photometry and comparisons with the models.
We found that the SFRs range within 0.1–1.0 M⊙ yr−1 , with a median rate of 0.6 M⊙ yr−1 . The observed galaxy colours are better explained by the combination of a continuous SF process with a recent instantaneous SF burst, than by a combination of several instantaneous bursts, as has been suggested previously. We compare our results for the SFR of the sample galaxies with that of samples of dwarf galaxies (DGs) in the Virgo cluster (VC) and find that the BCGs have significantly stronger SFRs. The BCGs follow the correlation between Hα emission and starlight found for DGs in the VC and for other BCGs. 相似文献

We present polarization observations of 28 compact steep-spectrum sources made with the upgraded MERLIN at 5 GHz. With an angular resolution of 60 milliarcsec and rms noise levels of about 0.1 mJy beam−1 , the total intensity images reveal new details in many of these sources. A few of the more extended lobes and jets are quite highly polarized, but more than half of the components are completely unpolarized. Comparison with published data implies that this is due to Faraday depolarization, probably occurring in the surrounding medium with nB ∼ 1 cm−3μ G. The high resolution of the present observations implies that the variations in Faraday rotation, probably due to magnetic field tangling, occur on scales of less than about 100 pc. 相似文献

With the goal of identifying high-redshift radio galaxies with Fanaroff–Riley class I (FR I) classification, here are presented high-resolution, wide-field radio observations, near-infrared and optical imaging and multi-object spectroscopy of two fields of the Leiden–Berkeley Deep Survey. These fields, Hercules.1 and Lynx.2, contain a complete sample of 81 radio sources with S 1.4 GHz > 0.5 mJy within 0.6 deg2 . This sample will form the basis for a study of the population and cosmic evolution of high-redshift, low-power, FR I radio sources which will be presented in Paper II. Currently, the host galaxy identification fraction is 86 per cent with 11 sources remaining unidentified at a level of r '≥ 25.2 mag (Hercules; four sources) or r '≥ 24.4 mag (Lynx; seven sources) or K ≳ 20 mag . Spectroscopic redshifts have been determined for 49 per cent of the sample and photometric redshift estimates are presented for the remainder of the sample. 相似文献

By checking DSS optical images and NVSS radio images, 782 Markarian galaxies were identified to be NVSS radio sources. A comparison of the radio luminosity at 1.4 GHz and the far-infrared (FIR) luminosity for 468 "normal" galaxies shows a tight correlation. Most of the Seyfert galaxies and quasars follow the radio-FIR relation deduced from the "normal" galaxy sample, but with a somewhat larger scatter. A total 167 Markarian galaxies, comprising 100 "normal" galaxies, 66 Seyfert galaxies and one quasar, have either excess radio emission or much lower FIR spectral index α(25μm,60μm). These galaxies may be classified as "AGN-powered". For "normal" galaxies, the average q value (defined as the log ratio between FIR and radio luminosities) is 2.3. There seems a trend for q to slightly decrease with increasing radio luminosity. This may imply that the ongoing active star formation in galaxies with higher radio luminosities is more efficient in heating the cosmic-ray electrons. 相似文献
