Abstract

A series of experiments was carried out to determine the sensitivity of an operational numerical weather prediction model to increased vertical resolution and the addition of stratospheric levels. Emphasis is placed on the planetary waves, since recent theoretical investigations indicate that the structure of these waves is greatly influenced by a model's vertical configuration.

It is shown that the sensitivity is low and that only a small reduction of forecast error in the planetary waves is achieved by augmented vertical structure.

Early observations of snow devils are reviewed and compared to those by Storr (1972). Possible mechanisms involved in their formation are suggested, based on studies of dust devils.

A wide set of size‐distribution models of haze and fog droplets expressed in terms of the modified gamma distribution function have been used for evaluating the proportionality coefficient b in the empirical relationship between visibility V and liquid water content LWC, that is V=b (LWC)‐ ^2/3, as proposed by Eldridge (1966). The evaluations of b turn out to be consistent with the values proposed in the literature and give evidence for its close dependence on the shape‐parameters of the droplet size distribution, especially as regards the mode radius and the width of the larger‐droplet wing. Three average relationship curves are proposed respectively for dense haze, “dry and cold” fog and “wet and warm” fog.

Corresponding to these cases, three correlation lines are presented between b and the ratio of the volume extinction coefficient at 3.70 μm wavelength to that at 0.55 μm, evaluated for the same uniform path in hazy and foggy atmospheres. Applied to measurements of infrared and visible transmission such correlation lines give the possibility of estimating the most proper value of b to be used in Eldridge's relationship for different atmospheric conditions.

气象部门Notes邮件系统升级优化及故障排查

随着气象信息现代化的进一步发展,2000年建设的气象部门Notes系统已不能满足新的应用需求.本文分析了基于Domino R5全国气象部门Notes系统升级需求,介绍了基于Domino R8系统结构和特点,将通信方式由原来中央节点集中分发改变为直接的点对点通信,在服务器运算、I/O带宽占用和数据存储方面均作了改进,2009年3月升级完成后已稳定运行.此外,还提出了新系统建成初期可能出现的故障及其相应解决办法.

A correspondence between the model ensemble simulations and observations of temperature changes on the territory of Russia

The results are presented of the statistical analysis of correspondence between the model simulations and observations of temperature changes on the territory of Russia. Three model ensembles are considered, differing in the level of taking account of the impact of external forcings on the climate system of the Earth. For each of them, the statistical correspondence is estimated between the observed surface air temperature variations in the second half of the 20th century and at the beginning of the 21st century and model simulations taking account of the natural variability typical of the climate system. The analysis demonstrated that, in spite of the uncertainties associated with the differences in the representation of anthropogenic and natural external forcings on the climate in model simulations as well as with the imperfection of climate models and with internal variability of the climate system, the model experiments enable to obtain the relevant information both on the temporal evolution of temperature changes on the territory of Russia and on their spatial peculiarities.

Notes on the temporal and spatial scales of climatic changes

Summary An investigation of the relationship between climatic change at various temporal and spatial scales was conducted making use of correlation and coherence analyses applied to observed monthly and annual global mean temperature data. Results indicate that the spatial scale does not change in spite of an increase in the temporal scale. Furthermore, a certain pattern, suggesting a teleconnection, was often observed in the scatter diagrams of correlations and coherence squared related to distance. We speculate that this is due to the constancy of the general circulation of the atmosphere for temporal scales.With 5 Figures

Notes on an Internal Boundary-Layer Height Formula

The derivation of the Panofsky–Dutton internal boundary-layer(IBL) height formula has been revisited. We propose that the upwindroughness length (rather than downwind) should be used in theformula and that a turbulent vertical velocity (_w) ratherthan the surface friction velocity (u_*) should be considered asthe appropriate scaling for the rate of propagation ofdisturbances into the turbulent flow. A published set ofwind-tunnel and atmospheric data for neutral stratification hasbeen used to investigate the influence of the magnitude ofroughness change on the IBL height.
