A theory of the probability of encounter of the Sun with an interstellar comet at a distance comparable to the Earth-Sun distance is formulated, and a general expression is derived establishing the relationship among the influx rate of interstellar comets, the perihelion distance, the space density of the comets, the Maxwellian distribution of comet velocities in the interstellar cloud, and the cloud's systematic velocity relative to the Sun. The fact that no comet with a strongly hyperbolic orbit has so far been observed is used to determine an upper limit of 6 × 10?4 solar masses per cubic parsec (4 × 10?26 gcm?3) for the space density of interstellar comets. The theoretical distribution of semimajor axes of interstellar comets is derived to show that a strong hyperbolic excess must be present in the orbits of a majority of interstellar comets regardless of the dynamical characteristics of the comet cloud, except when the cloud is moving along with the Sun and the distribution of individual velocities has a very low dispersion. This case, however, implies a possibility of capture by the Sun and thus becomes a problem of an Oort-type cloud.  相似文献

A direct method for determining electron densities from emission line intensities of ions in the beryllium isoelectronic sequence is described and then applied to the analysis of extreme ultraviolet Ciii and Ov spectra from both quiet and active areas in the solar transition region. The results are consistent with a value of N e T e = 6 × 1014 cm-3K for the quiet Sun at temperatures of 5 × 104 to 3 × 105K. Electron densities are approximately five times greater in active regions than in the quiet Sun.  相似文献

We present a preliminary analysis of spectral lines obtained with the SUMER instrument (Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation) onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), as observed during three observing campaigns. From the 70 observed spectral lines, we selected 12, representing 9 ions or atoms, in order to analyse line intensities, shifts and widths in polar coronal holes as well as in the normal quiet Sun. We find that coronal lines show a distinct blueshift in coronal holes relative to the quiet Sun at equal heliospheric angle, while there is no evidence for such a shift for lines formed at temperatures below 105K. The widths of lines formed at temperatures above 3 – 104K are slightly increased inside the coronal hole, but unaffected for lower temperatures. Intensity measurements clearly show the center-to-limb variation, as well as an intensity diminution inside the coronal hole for lines formed above approximately 105K. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The contribution of the electric currents induced as a result of the nonuniformity of the Sun??s rotation to the heating of the lower corona is estimated. The lower corona temperature is estimated taking into account gas-kinetic and turbulent electrical conductivities. It is shown that, when the turbulent conductivity is taken into account, the estimated temperature of the corona layer increases from 2 × 106 K to 5 × 106 K and the distance from the Sun??s center to the zone of maximum heating increases from 7.03 × 108 m to 7.2 × 108 m.  相似文献

Recent solar observations at Pic du Midi are reported that yield a value of J 2=(2.57 ± 2.36) x 10–6 for the quadrupole moment of the Sun. These observations were conducted from July 1993 to July 1994 after several improvements of the scanning heliometer. This instrument operates by fast photoelectric scans of opposite limbs of the Sun quasi-simultaneously, which provides the distance between both inflection points of the limb profiles. Any number of solar diameters in any position angle can be measured within a time interval short enough to minimize the scattering of the observational parameters. Errors due to atmospheric deterioration are discussed. From our results, compared to previous values obtained by other authors, it can be concluded than an upper limit for J 2 is probably 1.0 × 10-5.  相似文献

The tritium chain of the hydrogen cycle on the Sun including the reactions 3He(e, ν e) 3H(p, γ)4He is considered. The flux of tritium neutrinos at a distance of 1 AU is 8.1 × 104 cm−2 s−1. It exceeds the neutrino flux from the (hep)-reaction by one order of magnitude. The radial distribution of the yield of 3H neutrinos inside the Sun and their energy spectrum, which has the form of a line at an energy of 2.5–3.0 keV, have also been calculated. The flux of thermal tritium neutrinos is accompanied by a very weak flux of antineutrinos (∼103 cm−2 yr−1) with an energy below 18.6 keV. These antineutrinos are produced in the URCA processes 3He ⇆ 3H.  相似文献

The velocity distribution of the minor planets is studied in comparison with that of the stars in the neighbourhood of the Sun. The phase configuration at a given instant has been obtained and the distribution has been studied for different ecliptic sectors. The velocity distribution of the minor planets is similar to that of the stars and differs little form the trivariate normal distribution. The vertex presents a deviation from the direction of the Sun which is positive or negative for different sectors. This vertex deviation is a consequence of the orbit orientations. The relaxation time, deduced from the encounters between the minor planets, is of the order of 1014 to 1016 yr.  相似文献

In this paper we first emphasize why it is important to know the successive zonal harmonics of the Sun's figure with high accuracy: mainly fundamental astrometry, helioseismology, planetary motions and relativistic effects. Then we briefly comment why the Sun appears oblate, going back to primitive definitions in order to underline some discrepancies in theories and to emphasize again the relevant hypotheses. We propose a new theoretical approach entirely based on an expansion in terms of Legendre's functions, including the differential rotation of the Sun at the surface. This permits linking the two first spherical harmonic coefficients (J 2 and J 4) with the geometric parameters that can be measured on the Sun (equatorial and polar radii). We emphasize the difficulties in inferring gravitational oblateness from visual measurements of the geometric oblateness, and more generally a dynamical flattening. Results are given for different observed rotational laws. It is shown that the surface oblateness is surely upper bounded by 11 milliarcsecond. As a consequence of the observed surface and sub-surface differential rotation laws, we deduce a measure of the two first gravitational harmonics, the quadrupole and the octopole moment of the Sun: J 2=−(6.13±2.52)×10−7 if all observed data are taken into account, and respectively, J 2=−(6.84±3.75)×10−7 if only sunspot data are considered, and J 2=−(3.49±1.86)×10−7 in the case of helioseismic data alone. The value deduced from all available data for the octopole is: J 4=(2.8±2.1)×10−12. These values are compared to some others found in the literature. The standard model of solar evolution is reviewed and a number of problems highlighted. A fundamental question is whether there is any mixing of matter in the central regions, since such mixing could radically alter the model of the present Sun and modify our understanding of the evolution of other stars. Standard models of solar evolution become unstable to 3He driven global oscillations at an age of 3 × 108 years and this may drive some mixing, even if this is not the case the finite amptitude limit of these oscillations is likely to produce modifications in the standard model. Convective overshooting at the bottom of the outer convective zone leads to an increased depth of this zone and small changes in the interior. It is pointed out that the young Sun had a 12C driven convective core whose extent and duration depends on the extent of overshooting. Such a core is likely to produce a magnetic field which will affect the internal dynamics. The internal rotation of the Sun remains an enigma and absence of knowledge of any internal magnetic field makes it difficult to study the problem. Rotationally driven instabilities are ineffective in the central chemically inhomogenous regions but may contribute to the inward diffusion of lithium from the convective zone. These and other problems are considered, but few solutions are proposed.  相似文献

The result on λ-rays obtained from the analysis of 5800 orbits of data from the University of Rochester telescope on board the OSO-3 satellite are presented. For γ-rays of energy greater than 100 MeV, an upper limit of 2.3×10?4 cm?2 s?1 std has been placed on the diffuse (assumed isotropic) flux. An upper limit to the flux from the Sun is set at 3.2×10?5 and 2.4×10?5 cm?2 s?1 for energies greater than 50 MeV and 100 MeV, respectively. All flux values are calculated assuming a π0-decay source of γ-rays.  相似文献

Cross-sections of the sodium emission tail of Mercury were measured at various distances down the tail when Mercury was moving away from the Sun (true anomaly angles <180°), and again when Mercury was moving towards the Sun (true anomaly angles >180°). As predicted in early modeling studies, significant differences were expected between these two cases, as the result of Doppler shifts to higher solar intensity in the former case, and to lower solar intensity for the latter case. For observations with Mercury moving away from the Sun, the sodium tail was observed out to about 40,000 kilometers (16 Mercury radii, RM) downstream, expanding, on average, at a rate of 1.9±0.3 km/s. The source rates for sodium generation from Mercury into the tail were found to be in the range 2-5×1023 atoms/s, corresponding to between 1 and 10% of the estimated total sodium production rate on the planet. The limiting value of radiation acceleration required to produce an observable sodium tail was estimated to be 112±24 cm/s2. For observations where Mercury was moving towards the Sun, the emission intensity in the sodium tail decreased very rapidly with distance downstream, disappearing entirely beyond 12,000 (6 RM) kilometers for radiation accelerations of 128.7 and 135.4 cm/s2. For smaller radiation accelerations, the sodium tail was not detectable at all, yielding a limiting value for tail generation of about 122±2 cm/s2. Interpretation of the limiting radiation acceleration values suggests that the process that generates the sodium tail yields atoms with energies greater than 3 eV. Particle sputtering is the most reasonable source process.  相似文献

Since its launch on 22 September 2006, the EUV Imaging Spectrometer onboard the Hinode satellite has exhibited a gradual decay in sensitivity. Using spectroheliograms taken in the Fe viii 185.21 Å and Si vii 275.35 Å emission lines in quiet regions near Sun center we characterize that decay. For the period from December 2006 to March 2012, the decline in the sensitivity can be characterized as an exponential decay with an average time constant of 7358±1030 days (20.2±2.8 years). Emission lines formed at temperatures ??106.1 K in the quiet Sun data exhibit solar-cycle effects.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted in conjunction with the total solar eclipse on 29 March 2006 in Libya to measure both the electron temperature and its flow speed simultaneously at multiple locations in the low solar corona by measuring the visible K-coronal spectrum. Coronal model spectra incorporating the effects of electron temperature and its flow speed were matched with the measured K-coronal spectra to interpret the observations. Results show electron temperatures of (1.10±0.05) MK, (0.70±0.08) MK, and (0.98±0.12) MK, at 1.1 R from Sun center in the solar north, east and west, respectively, and (0.93±0.12) MK, at 1.2 R from Sun center in the solar west. The corresponding outflow speeds obtained from the spectral fit are (103±92) km s−1, (0+10) km s−1, (0+10) km s−1, and (0+10) km s−1. Since the observations were taken only at 1.1 R and 1.2 R from Sun center, these speeds, consistent with zero outflow, are in agreement with expectations and provide additional confirmation that the spectral fitting method is working. The electron temperature at 1.1 R from Sun center is larger at the north (polar region) than the east and west (equatorial region).  相似文献

The Extreme ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) onboard Hinode is the first solar telescope to obtain wide-slit spectral images that can be used for detecting Doppler flows in transition region and coronal lines on the Sun and to relate them to their surrounding small-scale dynamics. We select EIS lines covering the temperature range 6×104 to 2×106 K that give spectrally pure images of the Sun with the 40-arcsec slit. In these images Doppler shifts are seen as horizontal brightenings. Inside the image it is difficult to distinguish shifts from horizontal structures but emission beyond the image edge can be unambiguously identified as a line shift in several lines separated from others on their blue or red side by more than the width of the spectrometer slit (40 pixels). In the blue wing of He ii, we find a large number of events with properties (size and lifetime) similar to the well-studied explosive events seen in the ultraviolet spectral range. Comparison with X-Ray Telescope (XRT) images shows many Doppler shift events at the footpoints of small X-ray loops. The most spectacular event observed showed a strong blue shift in the transition region and lower corona lines from a small X-ray spot that lasted less than 7 min. The emission appears to be near a cool coronal loop connecting an X-ray bright point to an adjacent region of quiet Sun. The width of the emission implies a line-of-sight velocity of 220 km s−1. In addition, we show an example of an Fe xv shift with a velocity of about 120 km s−1, coming from what looks like a narrow loop leg connecting a small X-ray brightening to a larger region of X-ray emission.  相似文献

This paper reviews and analyses various observational data about the local interstellar medium (LISM)-a volume with a radius of about 200 pc near the Sun. There are collected radio, IR, optical, UV, and X-ray observations of the ISM and data on the Sco-Cen association. All available information confirms Weaver's (1979) conclusions that the Sun is located near an edge of a giant cavern with a radius of about 180 pc and the cavern center coincides with the Sco-Cen associated center. The outer rim of the cavern is observed as numerous, very longHi flaments, filaments of the interstellar polarization, and soft X-rays radiated by coronal gas with a temperature of about 106K. Close environment (from 10–4 to 2–5 pc) of the Sun is filled by warm (about 104 K)Hi with the number density 0.1–0.2 cm–3, which is a corona of the local cloud of the ISM. The central part of the cloud is observed to the galactical center direction at a distance of 10–20 pc as Sancini and van Woerden's (1970)Hi filament. The cloud blown round by stellar winds has a horseshoe-like shape, bordering the Sun. Tinbergen's (1982) patch of polarization is observational evidence of the shape.Several arguments are given to show that the bright spots of soft X-rays (130–284 eV) near the galactic poles are produced by an interaction of stellar winds with outer edge of the local cloud near the ends of the patch of polarization. Lyman continuum radiation from Sco-Cen stars was shown to be probably the main source of ionization of extendedHii regions of low density in the LISM. Various data evidence that the North Polar Spur is a SNR in the local cavern with the age of about 105 years. Interaction of the local cavern with an interstellar absorption-free tunnel stretched for more than 1 kpc along the galactical longitudel=240° is discussed. In conclusion several actual problems of investigation of the LISM were formulated.  相似文献

Activity in the chromosphere-corona transition region of the quiet Sun is found both at network boundaries and in cell interiors using a time series of the EUV spectroheliograms obtained with the Harvard experiment on Skylab. We identify time-varying sources by subtracting the minimum count at each pixel in the time series from the counts at any time. Larger flux enhancements in emission lines occur only at the network boundary, though the cell interiors also have variable intensities. Time-varying sources in the cell interior appear often in the shape of streaks which seem to originate from sources at the network boundary, or as expanding network boundary sources. It is likely that the sources in the cell interior come from the transition sheaths of chromospheric inhomogenities. A multi-temperature analysis shows that two types of sources occur in the quiet Sun. One is due to heating of cool chromospheric inhomogenities like dark mottles. Sometimes cool matter is heated to coronal temperatures. The typical mass of the coronal material produced is 1011-1012g. The other type seems to be due to draining of transition region material at the network boundary as the result of thermal instabilities. This quiet Sun activity is compatible with the time-varying sources at 6 cm wavelength.  相似文献

Comparison is made between the run of number density of meteoroids from penetration detectors aboard Helios A (masses below 10?8 g) and Pioneer 10 (masses near and above 3 × 10?9 g), the source function of the zodiacal light deduced from photometric observations aboard Helios A and Pioneer 10, counts versus brightness of objects passing by Pioneer 10 from the Sisyphus experiment and the distribution of meteoroids deduced from radar and optical meteors at the Earth. The Sisyphus experiment on Pioneer 10 observed reflecting glints on meteoroids rather than the meteoroids themselves and the counting statistics refer not to the effective radii of the meteoroids but to the effective radii of curvature of the reflecting glints on the meteoroids. The penetration detectors appear to find some increase in number density toward the Sun and a flat distribution outward to 5.2 AU. The overall behavior of the zodiacal light is that the relative distribution over direction is unchanged while the source scattering function diminishes as the inverse 1.4 power of distance from the Sun. The fit to the brightness of the zodiacal light obtained from these statistics can be combined with the mass distribution results from the optical meteors to deduce a mean geometric albedo of meteoroids of 0.006 at 1 AU from the Sun. Combination of the space distribution from radar meteors with the scattering source function of the zodiacal light yields geometric albedos for meteoroids running from 0.07 at 0.1 AU, from the Sun through 0.006 at 1 AU down to about 0.0001 at 3.3 AU which may run flat thence outward. This result is imposed by the indicated modest increase in density of meteoroids very near the Sun, a minimum between the Sun and the Earth near 0.4 AU and rising density outward to somewhere beyond 3.3 AU which is very different from the inverse 1.4 power of the distance shown for scatterers (product of number density and albedo) by the zodiacal light. A check on the distribution at very large sizes is possible if a search is made for fireballs in Jupiter's atmosphere by the Mariner Jupiter Saturn 1977 television cameras during the two encounters with Jupiter in 1979. An easy detection of such activity would put the maximum in the meteoroid distribution out near Jupiter and lend further confirmation to the indicated drop in albedo.  相似文献

Simultaneous measurements of NO and NO2 in the stratosphere leading to an NOx determination have been performed by means of i.r. absorption spectrometry using the Sun as a source in the 5·2 μm band of NO and in the 6·2 μm band of NO2. The observed abundance of NOP peaks at 26 km where it is equal to (4·2 ± 1) × 109 cm?3. The volume mixing ratio of NOp was observed to vary from 1·3 × 10?9 at 20 km to 1·3 × 10?8 at 34 km.  相似文献

3He is an intermediate product in the proton-proton chain, and standard models of the Sun predict a large bulge of enhanced 3He abundance near M r /M 0 = 0.6 in the contemporary Sun. The relatively low abundance of 3He at the solar surface, which is derived from solar wind observations, poses severe constraints to non-standard solar models.Direct measurements of the 3He abundance in the solar atmosphere are extremely difficult, whereas indirect measurements, e.g., in the solar wind, have been performed with considerable precision. The interpretation of solar wind observations with respect to solar surface abundances has been greatly improved in recent years. Abundance measurements have been performed under a large variety of solar wind conditions and refined models have been developed for the transport processes in the chromosphere and the transition region and for the processes occurring in the solar corona. From these measurements we estimate the present isotopic number ratio 3He/4He to be (4.1 ± 1.0) × 10–4 at the solar surface, corresponding to the weight abundance X 3 = (9.0 ± 2.4) × 10–5. The zero-age Main-Sequence abundance of 3He (after burning of D) might have been slightly lower (by about 10 to 20%) than the present-day value.Non-standard solar models involving mild turbulent diffusion (Lebreton and Maeder, 1987) could account for a slow secular increase of the 3He/4He ratio in the solar atmosphere. On the other hand it is difficult to reconcile models with severe mass loss as proposed by Guzik, Willson, and Brunish (1987) with this constraint. The slowing down of the solar rotation during the early Main-Sequence evolution was accompanied by stronger differential rotation probably implying a more effective mixing of the inner parts. Again, the surface abundance of 3He imposes severe limits on the evolution of the distribution of momentum within the early Sun.  相似文献

The radio radii of the Sun at wavelengths of 5, 10.7, 12, and 95 cm have been determined from eclipse observations as R5 ?? (1.0 ± 0.015)R ??, R 10,12 = (1.05 ± 0.003)R ??, and R 95 = (1.2 ± 0.02)R ??. The bright-ness temperatures of quiet solar disk areas at these wavelengths have turned out to be Td 5 = (22 ± 2) × 103, Td 10 = (44 ± 3) × 103, Td 12 = (47 ± 3) × 103, and Td 95 = (1000 ± 30) × 103 K. There were local sources of radio emission with angular sizes from 1.9 to 2.4 arcmin and brightness temperatures from 80 × 103 to 1.75 × 106 K above sunspot groups at short wavelengths of 5, 10.7, and 12 cm. The radio flux from the local sources at 95 cm turned out to be below the detection threshold of 1.0 × 10?22 W m?2 Hz?1. Comparison of the values obtained with the results of observations of another eclipse on August 1, 2008, occurred at the epoch of minimum of the 11-year solar cycle has shown that the radio radius of the Sun at 10.7 and 12 cm increased from 1.016 R ?? to 1.05 ± 0.003R ??, the height of the emitting layer at these wavelengths moved from 11 × 103 km to (30 ± 7) × 103 K, and the brightness temperature of the quiet Sun rose from (35.8 ± 0.4) × 103 K to (44 ± 3) × 103 K at 10.7 cm and from (37.3 ± 0.4) × 103 K to (47 ± 3) × 103 K at 12 cm. Consequently, the parameters of the solar atmosphere changed noticeably in 2 years in connection with the beginning of the new solar cycle 24. The almost complete absence of local sources at the longest wavelength of 95 cm suggests that the magnetic fields of the sunspot groups on January 4, 2011, were weak and did not penetrate to the height from where their emission could originate. If this property is inherent in most sunspot groups of cycle 24, then it can be responsible for its low flare activity.  相似文献
