The effects of sediment-bound contaminants on kidney and gill chloride cells were surveyed in juvenile Solea senegalensis exposed to fresh sediments collected from three distinct sites of the Sado Estuary (Portugal) in a 28-day laboratorial assay. Sediments were analyzed for metallic contaminants, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and organochlorines as well as for total organic matter, redox potential and fine fraction. The potential for causing adverse biological effects of each surveyed sediment was assessed by comparison of contaminant levels to available guidelines for coastal sediments, namely the Threshold Effects Level (TEL) and the Probable Effects Level (PEL). The Sediment Quality Guideline Quotient indices (SQGQ) were calculated to compare the overall contamination levels of the three stations. A qualitative approach was employed to analyze the histo/cytopathological traits in gill chloride cells and body kidney of fish exposed to each tested sediment for 0, 14 and 28 days. The results showed that sediment contamination can be considered low to moderate and that the least contaminated sediment (from a reference site, with the lowest SQGQ) caused lesser changes in the surveyed organs. However, the most contaminated sediment (by both metallic and organic xenobiotics, with highest SQGQ) was neither responsible for the highest mortality nor for the most pronounced lesions. Exposure to the sediment presenting an intermediate SQGQ, essentially contaminated by organic compounds, caused the highest mortality (48%) and the most severe damage to kidneys, up to full renal necrosis. Chloride cell alterations were similar in fish exposed to the two most contaminated sediments and consisted of a pronounced cellular hypertrophy, likely involving fluid retention and loss of mitochondria. It can be concluded that sediment contamination considered to be low or moderate may be responsible for severe injury to cells and parenchyma involved in the maintenance of osmotic balance, contributing for the high mortality levels observed. The results suggest that sediment-bound organic contaminants such as PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) and PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) may be very toxic to the analyzed organs, especially the kidney, even when present in low-risk concentrations.  相似文献

Concentrations of twelve metals were determined in sediments, seaweed (Fucus vesiculosus), winkles (Littorina littorea), polychaetes (Nereis diversicolor), suspension feeding bivalves (Mytilus edulis, Cerastoderma edule) and deposit feeding bivalves (Macoma balthica, Scrobicularia plana) collected from the Mersey estuary between April 1980 and June 1984.Sediments and organisms in the Mersey are moderately contaminated with most of the metals measured, but mercury concentrations are consistently higher than in other United Kingdom estuaries. Comparisons with other sites in the North West of England indicate that mercury residues in organisms, though primarily dependent on sediment concentrations, are also influenced by complexation with particulate organic matter which reduces the availability of mercury. The biological availability of arsenic in Mersey sediments is similarly influenced by complexation with iron oxyhydroxides.Nereis diversicolor and Macoma balthica are the most suitable indicator species in terms of abundance and widespread distribution along the estuary, and, for the majority of metals, tissue concentrations increase upstream, reflecting corresponding gradients in sediment contamination. However mid-estuarine peaks for tin, chromium copper and nickel in Nereis indicate more localised inputs to the estuary. Correlations between lead in sediments and organisms are poor; it is suggested that hydrophilic alkyl lead compounds may be the predominant biologically available forms.Progressive reductions in mercury contamination in sediments and mercury and lead in organisms have occurred in recent years, which coincide with efforts to reduce inputs of these metals to teh Mersey estuary.  相似文献

The invasive polychaete genus, Marenzelleria and the native amphipod, Monoporeia affinis are food and habitat competitors in the Baltic Sea. Previous studies have shown that moderate densities of Marenzelleria can affect the behaviour of M. affinis. To examine the short-term interactive effects of interspecific habitat choice and environmental contaminants a series of habitat colonisation experiments were performed. The contaminants examined included harbor sediments and sediment spiked with the antifouling substances, Cu, Zn and Irgarol. Polychaetes and amphipods were exposed to contaminants in single-species and two-species experiments. In spiked-sediment experiments, M. affinis showed clear dose-dependent response. These experiments verified that behavioural response of M. affinis to different habitats is a sensitive method for testing toxicity under controlled conditions. In experiments with three different harbor sediments and reference sediment both species showed the lowest preference for the reference sediment. This sediment also had the lowest content of quality food, indicating that factors such as food quality and quantity may override the disturbing effects of contaminants in natural sediments. The presence of Marenzelleria spp. did not affect amphipod habitat choice, indicating no short-term effects, which implies that both species can co-exist provided sufficient food is available.  相似文献

The assessment of sediment quality by considering chemical contaminants is required for the effective management of coastal environments. In this study, complex data sets of heavy metals and organic pollutants were integrated to evaluate sediment quality. Thirty-two target pollutants were quantitatively determined in surface sediments from 80 stations in Jinhae Bay, South Korea. A sediment quality index (SQI) was derived by combining the functions of “scope” (the number of variables that do not meet guideline objectives) and “amplitude” (the magnitude by which these variables exceed the guideline objective). The SQI reflects the spatial gradient and differences in the contamination status with regard to heavy metals and organic pollutants in Jinhae Bay. Fifty-nine out of eighty stations surveyed (74%) were classified as being in “excellent” or “good” condition according to the SQI, and no stations were in a “poor” condition. The mean sediment quality guideline quotient (mSGQq) ranged from 0.06 to 0.31 (from nontoxic to marginally toxic). Acute sediment toxicity leading to amphipod mortality was recorded at 17 stations (21%) of the 80 surveyed, where the mortality rate was slightly over 20%. No significant relationship was observed between sediment toxicity and the concentration of each toxicant or mSQGq.  相似文献

The toxicity of fifty sediment samples from a heavily industrialized urban embayment (Commencement Bay, Washington) and a non-urban inlet (Carr Inlet, Washington) was measured by three bioassay techniques: Microtox (bacterial luminescence), oyster embryo and amphipod tests. In comparison with Carr Inlet sediments, twenty-nine of the Commencement Bay sediments caused a significant (P< 0·05) decrease in bacterial luminescence, seventeen caused a significant (P<0·05) increase in amphipod mortality and sixteen caused significant (P< 0·05) increase in oyster embryo abnormality. Overa ll, nineteen (41%) of the Commencement Bay sediments were either toxic in all three bioassays or non-toxic in all three bioassays.Rank-order comparisons showed a high level of agreement among the three bioassays (Kendall's coefficient of concordance = 0·64, P < 0·001). However, individual correlations suggested considerable variation among the bioassays, which may be attributable to sensitivity to individual contaminants, differences in exposure routes and the heterogeneous distribution of contaminants in Commencement Bay sediments. These results indicate the usefulness of a diversity of toxicity testing procedures in wide-scale surveys of sediment contamination. Where a high degree of concordance exists among the various bioassays, a broadly based index may be developed that encompasses a wider range of sediment toxicity than would be evident from a single testing procedure.  相似文献

Large areas of the bottom sediments of the Baltic Sea are temporarily or permanently anoxic. These sediments are also an important sink for a variety of contaminants. Reoxygenation of bottom waters allows recolonisation by benthic infauna, which may have important implications for the fate of buried contaminants. This study used tracers to experimentally examine the role of bioturbation by benthic infauna in transporting sediment-associated contaminants in the Baltic Sea. Three different tracer methods were used in two experiments, using three key Baltic macrofaunal species: the amphipod crustacean Monoporeia affinis; the Baltic clam Macoma baltica; and the priapulid worm Halicryptus spinulosus. In the first experiment, a reoxygenation–recolonisation scenario was recreated in the laboratory, using hypoxic sediment cores collected in the field, to determine if there was remobilisation of buried 137Cs from the Chernobyl nuclear accident in 1986. The potential for the infauna to bury newly settled surface contamination was also investigated, using a fluorescent particle tracer. In the second experiment, artificially-created radiolabelled tracer layers (14C and 51Cr) were used to quantify both upward and downward movements of organic matter and sediment-associated contaminants by bioturbation.In both experiments there were clear visual differences between the sediment effects of the three species. Halicryptus spinulosus buried deepest into the sediment, creating a network of burrows, Monoporeia affinis burrowed actively in the upper few centimeters of the sediment, and Macoma baltica was quite stationary, but appeared to filter- and deposit feed at the sediment surface. Mixing depths in the hypoxic sediment varied from 4.0 ± 3.5 cm for M. baltica to 7.8 ± 2.1 cm for H. spinulosus. Biodiffusion rates (Db) were similar for all treatments but biotransport rates (r) were significantly different between treatments, mainly due to a high r value for H. spinulosus. In the experiment with radiolabelled tracer layers, 51Cr was transported more than 14C, and tracer originally at the surface transported more than tracer buried 4 cm below the surface. There was also transport of all tracers in treatments without added macrofauna. The most likely explanation is bioturbation by the meiofauna that were undoubtedly present in both experiments.Bioturbation by macrofauna both buries surface contaminants and remobilises those that are buried, but the effects are small and on a similar scale to transport caused by meiofauna. In addition, 137Cs profiles at the hypoxic site indicated that resuspension and redeposition of sediment by physical processes had occurred, and also showed that contaminants from the last 40 years were still present in the top 5–10 cm of the sediment, well within active mixing depths. At this site, as at many others in the Baltic, physical processes are likely to be far more important than biological processes in the redistribution of contaminants on a decadal timescale.  相似文献

In an attempt to incorporate both line of evidence (LOE) and classical weight of evidence (WOE) approaches for the assessment of sediment quality, a set of biomarkers were analyzed in target tissues of two invertebrate species after 28 days of exposure to sediments impacted by oil (derived from the tanker Prestige (2002)). The integration of biomarkers with sediment contamination, acute toxicity and benthic alteration parameters provides an “early warning” tool which not only indicates the environmental quality of an area, but also constitutes an advisory tool for potential ecological risks. The selected biomarkers provide information about the first biological responses due to the presence of contaminants in the environment providing predictable reports about further effects to the ecosystem. The present study demonstrates that the use of a set of biomarkers as part of a WOE approach designed to assess contaminated sediments contributes added value to the classical LOE and allows characterization of the environmental status of the studied area in a more precise and accurate way.  相似文献

利用综合生物标志物响应(IBR)指数对北部湾潮间带沉积环境中多氯联苯(PCBs)、石油烃(TPH)、壬基酚(NP) 和苯并芘(B[a]P)的综合污染水平进行评价。在9个站位采集波纹巴非蛤(Paphia undulata)和沉积物样品,测定沉积物和生物软组织中有机污染物含量,同时对鳃、内脏中与细胞防御系统有关的各7种标志物(包括还原型谷胱甘肽(GSH)、氧化型谷胱甘肽(GSSG)、谷胱甘肽过氧化物酶(GPx)、过氧化氢酶(CAT)等)进行分析。利用相关性分析法筛选出对1~2种有机污染物响应敏感的生物标志物共8种,分别为内脏中的GPx、GSH、GSSG、CAT和鳃中的GPx、GSH、GSSG、CAT。以筛选的8种生物标志物为基础, 9个站位IBR指数范围为0.27~1.48,其中站位S2(湛江市乐民镇码头)、站位S9(湛江市江洪码头)的IBR较小,显示污染程度最轻;站位S4(防城港西湾)、站位S3(钦州湾老人沙浅滩) IBR较高,显示生物体因有机污染产生氧化逆境。不同站位的IBR值与污染源分布、化学污染物分析结果基本一致,表明该方法可用于北部湾潮间带沉积物有机污染程度的综合评价。  相似文献

  • 1.1. The accumulation of aromatic hydrocarbons (AHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) kv English sole (Parophrys vetulus) exposed for up to 108 days to an urban (test) sediment was compared to that for English sole exposed to sediment from a reference area. The concentrations of identified AHs and PCBs in the test sediment were 32 μg/g dry weight and 2·2 μg/g dry weight, respectively. English sole exposed to test and reference sediments for 108 days had biliary concentrations of aromatic compounds fluorescing at BaP wavelengths of 0·6 μg/g, wet weight and hepatic concentrations of PCBs of 1·4 ± 0·6 μg/g wet weight which were ten and eight times, respectively, as great as those in reference sole. These results show that accumulation of AHs and PCBs from sediment by English sole is a significant route of uptake in contaminated environments.
  • 2.2. 3H-benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) and 14C-PCBs were added to the test sediment to compare the uptake and metabolism of BaP to that of PCBs by sole. Steady-state concentrations of 3H-BaP and 14C-PCBs in tissues and fluids were reached by 4 days and 14 days, respectively. At steady state, the level of covalent binding of 3H-BaP to hepatic proteins in test sole was six times greater than that of 14C-PCBs, and there was significantly greater relative formation of BaP-glutathione (GSH) conjugates than PCB-GSH conjugates. Thus, the amount of BaP metabolized to reactive metabolites was greater than that for PCBs, even though the concentration of 14C-PCBs in liver of test sole was five times as great as that of 3H-BaP.
  • 3.3. Trace amounts of 3H-BaP were also added to the reference sediment to determine how simultaneous exposure of English sole to those contaminants already present in the test sediment affected the metabolism and disposition of BaP. The 3H-BaP concentration ratios for liver to sediment and bile to sediment, as well as proportions of biliary BaP-GSH conjugates in test sole, were significantly greater than in reference sole. Thus, the formation and accumulation of potentially toxic metabolites of a carcinogenic AH (BaP) in sole liver were increased by simultaneous exposure to contaminants present in an urban sediment.

We investigated the impact of sediment reworking fauna and hydrodynamics on mobilization and transport of organic matter and fine particles in marine sediments. Experiments were conducted in an annular flume using lugworms (Arenicola marina) as model organisms. The impact of lugworms on sediment characteristics and particle transport was followed through time in sediments experimentally enriched with fine particles (< 63 μm) and organic matter. Parallel experiments were run at low and high water current velocity (11 and 25 cm s 1) to evaluate the importance of sediment erosion at the sediment–water interface. There was no impact of fauna on sediment composition and particle transport at current velocity below the sediment erosion threshold. At current velocity above the erosion threshold, sediment reworking by lugworms resulted in dramatic particle transport (12 kg dry matter m 2) to an adjacent particle trap within 56 days. The transported matter was enriched 6–8 times in fine particles and organic matter when compared to the initial sediment. This study suggests that sediment reworking fauna is an important controlling factor for the particle composition of marine sediments. A. marina mediated sediment reworking greatly increases the sediment volume exposed to hydrodynamic forcing at the sediment–water interface, and through sediment resuspension control the content of fine particles and organic matter in the entire reworked sediment layer (> 20 cm depth).  相似文献

We explore the use of the clam Tapes semidecussatus Reeves 1864 as an indicator for the presence of potentially genotoxic substances in estuarine sediments. The limitations associated with the interpretation of Comet assay data (expressed as % DNA in tail) in terms of clam reproductive state, size (age) and thermal exposure history following laboratory acclimation are discussed. Hatchery-reared clams, subjected to ambient temperature fluctuations during growth, were exposed in vivo under laboratory conditions for three weeks to sediment samples collected from a polluted site and a "clean" reference site. The DNA damage observed in haemocytes, gill and digestive gland cells was significantly higher in animals exposed to contaminated sediment compared to those exposed to sediment from the reference site. The extent of DNA damage recorded was not correlated with size (age). Spawning was not observed during the experiment. Nevertheless, clams with well-developed gonads showed a statistically higher degree of DNA damage in gill and digestive gland cells- but not haemocytes, demonstrating an increased sensitivity to potential genotoxic compounds, possibly caused by impaired DNA repair capacity due to reproductive activity. Furthermore, the degree of DNA damage in clams exposed to contaminated sediments was higher in autumn and winter compared to spring and summer, suggesting an effect of seasonal priming.  相似文献

Eight metals, 21 organic priority pollutants, and 11 other contaminants and contaminant-related sediment characteristics were measured in surface sediments (upper 2 cm) at 21 locations in Commencement Bay and the Tacoma Waterways, Washington. Summary statistics were calculated and statistical approaches (analysis of variance, multiple comparisons tests, cluster analysis and principal component analysis) were applied to subsets of the data to classify sediment contamination. Overall sediment contamination was highest in the Sitcum, City and Hylebos Waterways, intermediate in Commencement Bay, at the entrances to the Tacoma Waterways and in the outer reaches of the Blair and Hylebos Waterways, and lowest at the Blair Waterway turning basin, the mouth of the Puyallup River and at a reference site near Browns Point. High concentrations of some contaminants appeared to be related to proximity to sources of contaminants. Depositional vectors, and chemical adsorption processes may also influence the spatial distribution of sediment contamination in the study area.Results of simple and partial correlation analyses indicate that arsenic, iron and manganese may be more closely associated with the clay fraction, while cadmium, copper and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons may be more closely associated with the total organic carbon content of sediments. We were unable to discriminate statistically between the affinity of chromium, lead, zinc and phthalates with the % clay or the total organic carbon content of sediments.  相似文献

The influence of each of four organic pollutants selected from among those commonly found in coastal areas, 1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl) ethylene (DDE), monobutyltin (MBT), Triton X-100 and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), on Cu accumulation by Halimione portulacoides was investigated. Experiments were carried out in a laboratory setting, either in hydroponics (sediment elutriate) or in a salt marsh sediment (Cávado River, NW Portugal) soaked in elutriate. Groups of H. portulacoides were exposed to media for 6 days spiked with 10 mg/L Cu(II) and with one of the selected pollutants, at an environmentally realistic concentration. DDE and MBT did not cause any major change on Cu accumulation by H. portulacoides, whereas PAHs slightly increased accumulation only in hydroponics i.e. in the absence of sediment. On the other hand, the non-ionic surfactant Triton X-100 markedly favoured Cu accumulation on plant roots both in the presence and absence of sediment. The addition of DDE, MBT and Triton X-100 also favoured Cu solubility from sediments. Therefore, the simultaneous presence of pollutants from different nature (inorganic and organic) in the estuarine environment may result in a composition of water column, pore water, sediment or biota different of that expected considering the effect of each individual pollutant.  相似文献

The Palos Verdes coastal zone off Los Angeles receives over 1·4×109 l of primary treated wastewaters daily. Benthic effects from this discharge include elevated organic matter and trace contaminants in sediments, generation of H2S among sediment porewaters and altered biological community structure. In 1973 large numbers of the echiuran Listriolobus pelodes settled in shelf sediments several kilometers from the outfalls. By 1975 the centre of Listriolobus distribution had shifted towards the outfall region, where peak numbers (1500 m−2) and biomass (2 kg m−2) developed. Populations declined in 1977 and the echiuran had virtually disappeared from the shelf by 1978. The echiurans' burrowing, respiratory, and feeding activities aerated and reworked sediments, and thus reduced wastewater impacts on the ocean bottom, enabling a diverse fauna to develop in the outfall region. With the disappearance of the echiuran, sediment quality and benthic communities reverted towards former conditions. However, because of improvements made in effluent quality during the echiuran period, wastewater impacts were of lower magnitude than before the Listriolobus invasion.  相似文献

This paper discusses the following topics related to polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbon pollution in estuaries: (1) the use of oysters (Crassostrea virginica), hard clams (Mercenaria mercenaria) and brackish water clams (Rangia cuneata) in residue monitoring; (2) the effects of elevated PAH residues on oyster condition; (3) three years of field studies relating PAH sediment contamination to abnormalities in fishes; and (4) laboratory bioassays for effects and bioconcentration modeling. Oysters, hard clams and Rangia have been shown, from 3 years of field studies, to be good monitors of pollution inputs as one proceeds along salinity gradients from 25‰ to 0·5‰. Effects of increased body burdens of PAHs are shown by a lowering of the oysters' condition index, as measured by lipid levels. Fishes inhabiting the Elizabeth River, VA, which is highly contaminated with PAHs, have abnormalities (cataracts, skin lesions, abnormal fins, etc.). These abnormalities have higher incidence in regions of the river where the sediments are more heavily contaminated. Laboratory studies utilizing contaminated sediments have reproduced some of the abnormalities observed in the field. Bioconcentration of PAHs from sediments has been studied with oysters and hard clams. Oysters generally accumulate three times the body burdens of clams exposed to the same suspensions. A faster depuration rate (k2) for clams appears to be responsible for the higher equilibrium body burden of oysters.  相似文献

An investigation of the factors responsible for the distribution of Macoma balthica (L.) on a mudflat receiving sewage effluent was carried out in the Fraser River estuary, British Columbia. The factors examined included reduced salinity, low levels of dissolved oxygen, effluent toxicity, chlorination, substrate grain size and the effects of metal contaminated sediments. Results showed that salinity, dissolved oxygen and sediment grain size did not satisfactorily explain the distribution of M. balthica. Unchlorinated and chlorinated sewage effluent were shown to be non-toxic in laboratory tests, and these results were confirmed by 7-day in situ bioassays. The factor which appeared to determine the distribution of M. balthica was the degree of contamination of the substrate which affected the settling and survival of larval and juvenile clams. Heavy metals occurred in high concentrations in the contaminated sediments and were considered to be the most probable controlling factor.  相似文献

Being a sediment feeder, the lugworm Arenicola marina could be a suitable candidate organism for the biomonitoring of sediment-bound contaminants in intertidal areas. Since lugworms are only rarely used in environmental monitoring, little is known about the natural variation in their body residue levels. In this study, we assessed the importance of seasonal fluctuations, spatial variation and sexual development to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) residues in lugworms. Over a period of 15 months, lugworms were sampled along a contamination gradient in the Western Scheldt estuary in the Netherlands. A clear seasonal pattern in the body residue levels of PAH was observed, with lowest levels in March and highest levels just prior to the spawning season in September. During the spawning season the body residue levels showed a marked decrease. Although this seasonal pattern is apparently related to the reproductive cycle of the lugworm, no clear differences in body residue levels were found between animals with or without developed gonads. The contamination gradient, present in the estuary, was clearly reflected in the body residue levels of PAH. The expected gradient of internal concentrations was, however, absent in October, when the spawning period was not yet finished. The variation in lugworm body residue levels was smaller than the fluctuations in sediment PAH levels. It can be concluded that the lugworm is a suitable organism for the biomonitoring of sediment-bound contaminants, provided that attention is paid to its reproductive cycle.  相似文献

A flash flood that occurred in July 1996 in the Saguenay area (Québec, Canada), deposited a bed of cohesive sediments, average of 10–60 cm thick, over an area of 65 km2 of the deep fjord basin of the upper Saguenay Fjord. Because this turbidite covered contaminated sediments, the resuspension potential of surficial sediments is an important parameter in determining the efficiency of the 1996 layer as a natural capping layer. This is because contaminants that may have diffused through the 1996 layer may be resuspended. The resuspension potential of surficial sediments in Saguenay Fjord was investigated in situ over a 3-yr period at fifteen sites in the Baie des Ha! Ha! and the North Arm using a benthic flume, the Miniflume. In addition, geotechnical measurements, photographs of benthic sediments and recordings of benthic current velocities were also carried out. The measured critical velocities of sediment resuspension (uc) vary between 7 and 15 cm s 1. The maximum bottom current speed recorded in the North Arm and in Baie des Ha! Ha! from May to August 2000 was 27 cm s 1. Erosion depths were determined from Miniflume data combined with laboratory measurements carried out with an axial tomography scanner, which provided variation of sediment density at an interval of 0.13 mm. A general relationship between depth of erosion (ze, mm) and shear stress applied on the bed (τb, Pa) was determined. As Saguenay Fjord sediment characteristics vary greatly from one station to another, the potential for resuspension of surficial sediments shows the same trend.  相似文献

Sediment contamination and toxicity were monitored at 14 sites in San Francisco Bay between 1991 and 1996. Sediment contamination patterns were different in the major reaches of the Bay, and at each site. Several contaminants were consistently above concentrations previously associated with toxicity at most sites. Bulk sediment bioassays using the amphipod Eohaustorius estuarius and sediment elutriate bioassays using larval bivalves (Mytilus spp., Crassostrea gigas) also indicated different patterns of sediment toxicity in space and time. Sediments were most toxic to the amphipods at Redwood Creek (90% of the tests), and were toxic in at least half the tests conducted at five other sites. Sediment elutriates severely reduced normal bivalve larval development at the San Joaquin and Sacramento Rivers in all samples, but toxicity occurred in less than a third of the tests in the Central and South Bays. Toxicity could not be statistically related to seasonal freshwater flow or rainfall in the Bay, but seasonal variation in contaminant concentrations and toxicity was observed. Amphipod toxicity was inversely and significantly related to the mean effects range-median quotient, suggesting that cumulative concentrations of several contaminants were related to toxicity. Further analysis identified suites of specific contaminants at each site that were variably related to amphipod toxicity at each site. Chlordanes, cadmium, and silver were significantly related to amphipod survival in the North Bay. Seasonal patterns in low, and high molecular weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were related to toxicity at Alameda, and metals and PAHs were related to toxicity at Castro Cove. Larval bivalve toxicity was associated with metals in bulk sediments, but elutriate chemistry was not measured, and relationships with toxicity could not be examined. Hypotheses about effective concentrations of several individual contaminants and mixtures of contaminants were posed.  相似文献

Multiple regression analyses indicate that the most important factors controlling Ag, Cd, Co, Cu, Pb and Zn concentrations in the estuarine bivalve Scrobicularia plana and the polychaete Nereis diversicolor are the concentrations of these metals in surface sediments and the partitioning of sediment-bound metals between different sediment constituents. Extraction of the sediments with 1-n HCl provides more information about the bioavailability of the metals than do extractions with five other techniques. Biologically available Cd and Co in solution contribute significantly to Cd and Co concentrations in both Scrobicularia and Nereis. Concentrations of Ag in Scrobicularia are reduced where Cu concentrations in sediments are high. An unexplained increase in concentrations of Cu in Scrobicularia at specific stations in six estuaries suggests that under certain very anoxic conditions the availability of copper may be exceptionally high.  相似文献
