The development of robust techniques for early damage detection for offshore structures is crucial to avoid the possible catastrophe caused by structural failures. This article applies the cross-model cross-mode (CMCM) method for damage detection that is capable of identifying the damage to individual members of offshore jacket platforms, when limited, spatially incomplete modal data is available. Basically, the CMCM method is classified as a direct, physical property adjustment model updating method. Implementing this method requires only a few modes measured from the damaged structure. In dealing with spatial incompleteness, this paper investigates both model reduction and modal expansion techniques. Specifically, either Guyan (static condensation) or SEREP (system equivalent reduction expansion process) transformation matrix, between the master and slave degrees-of-freedom, is employed in the model reduction or modal expansion process. One theoretical development is an iterative procedure to compute the transformation matrix associated with the (unknown) damaged structure. Numerical studies are conducted for a jacket platform with multiple damaged members based on synthetic data generated from finite-element models. The results suggest that (i) Guyan scheme always outperforms SEREP, (ii) model reduction is always better than modal expansion, and (iii) the CMCM method in conjunction with iterative Guyan reduction approach yields the best damage location and severity estimate.

In this paper Nondestructive Damage Detection (NDD) for offshore platforms is investigated under operational conditions. As is known, there is no easy way to measure ambient excitation, so damage detection methods based on ambient excitation have become very vital for the Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of offshore platforms. The modal parameters (natural frequencies, damping ratios and mode shapes) are identified from structural response data with the Natural Excitation Technique (NExT) in conjunction with the Eigensystem Realization Algorithm (ERA) . A new method of damage detection is presented, which utilizes the invariance property of element modal strain energy. This method is to assign element modal strain energy to two parts, and defines two damage detection indicators. One is compression modal strain energy change ratio (CMSECR); the other is flexural modal strain energy change ratio (FMSECR). The present modal strain energy is obtained by incomplete modal shape and structural stiffness matr

This application-oriented paper presents comparison of various broadband frequency based structural damage localization indices using experimental data from a full-scale structure known as the I-40 Bridge. First, three ‘damage-sensitive’ response parameters determined in the time and/or spectral domain, modal domain and wavelet domain are presented for damage localization in the context of a ‘non-model-based’ damage identification approach. Secondly, experimental modal data (namely natural frequencies, mode shapes and modal damping) obtained from this full-scale bridge subjected to various damage conditions is employed for assessment of the robustness of these methods on ‘real-world’ applications. Consequently, the results obtained are compared with those obtained from existing resonance frequency based damage identification methods. The results obtained demonstrate the improved capability of the broadband methods to localize damage in a full-scale structure despite sparse modal information and limited measurement grid points.

In this paper a new approach is introduced for structural health monitoring of offshore jacket platforms. The procedure uses the measured ambient vibration responses and the corresponding readable natural frequencies and mode shapes of the structural system. Since offshore platforms are composed of heavy topsides supported by jacket structures, participation of the first mode is dominant in each direction in the response of the structure under field excitations. Moreover, ambient vibrations such as wave loads and boat impacts only excite the first modes of the structure. Therefore, it is difficult to find higher modes and the pertinent frequencies by use of accelerometers data. The introduced innovative method in this research uses the first few fundamental frequencies and mode shapes of the structure. The algorithm employs the inverse vibration technique to develop a simple two and three dimensional reference model for monitoring health of the structure. To show the efficiency of the proposed procedure, a case study is carried out on the models of a jacket-type platform in the Persian Gulf, namely SPD2. Finally, an uncertainty analysis is performed, due to the existence of noises and uncertainties in input data collected by accelerometers. Results indicate that the proposed method has the ability to detect the induced damages by a high level of accuracy considering probable sources of error.

A Study on Crack Detection with Modal Parameters of A Jacket Platform
Crack detection procedures by different modal parameters are analyzed for identitying a crack and its location and magnitude in a jacket plafform. The first ten natural frequencies and modal shapes of the jacket models are obtained by numerical experiments based on NASTRAN Code. A crack at different locations and of different magnitudes is imposed in the model at the underwater beams. Then, the modal evaluation parameters are calculated numerically, to illustrate the evaluation of modal parameter criteria used in jacket crack detection. The sensitivities of different modal parameters to different cracks are analyzed. A new technique is presented for predicting the approximate location of a breakage in the absence of the data of an intact model. This method can be used to detect a crack in underwater menbers by use of incomplete mode shapes of the top members of the jacket.

The identification of true weak modes buried in high-level, noisy, measured data from offshore structures is a practical but challenging problem because weak modes are typically eliminated as noise and rarely, yield a discrete time series. This study proposes a weak-mode identification and time-series reconstruction method for offshore structures when high-level noise is present. A theoretical development proposed in this study extends the traditional modal analysis to reconstructing the discrete time series of weak modes, thereby removing its previous limitations to only frequencies, damping ratios and mode shapes. Additionally, a second development proposed in this study makes the reconstructed time series not simply a combination of harmonic components from a Fourier transform but rather complex exponentials; the damping of the test structure is thus estimated with a better accuracy. A third theoretical development avoids variations in the results from different original signals by handling multiple signals simultaneously. The proposed approach primarily includes three steps: (1) estimate the poles and corresponding residues of high-level, noisy, measured data by converting high-order difference equations to first-order difference equations; (2) isolate the poles of weak modes by assigning multiple rough-pole windows, and subsequently extract the corresponding residues based on the row number of the isolated pole vector; and (3) identify and reconstruct the time series of the weak modes of interest in the form of complex exponentials. The most primary advantage of the proposed process in engineering applications is that the pole windows can be easily obtained and assigned from the relationship between the frequencies and their poles. Three numerical examples are studied: the first presents the detailed numerical operation of the proposed method, the second extends the proposed method from managing one signal to managing multiple signals, and the third demonstrates the advantage of the approach compared with traditional methods. The numerical results indicate that the original signals can be decomposed into multiple complex exponentials with representative poles and corresponding residues, and that the new signals representing weak modes could be reconstructed by assigning a range of frequencies in terms of their relations with the poles. To study the performance of the proposed method when applied to offshore structures such as offshore platforms and marine risers, the experimental data from the high mode VIV experiments sponsored by the Norwegian Deepwater Programme (NDP) are used firstly. The results show that two dominant frequencies corresponding to the in-line and cross-flow directions can be identified simultaneously even one mode is very weak compared with the other, and the time series of the weak mode could be reconstructed with a rough frequency window. Then sea-test data of two offshore platforms are used: one was collected from the JZ20-2MUQ offshore platform when it was excited by ice, and the other was collected from the WZ11-4D platform when it was excited by waves. The results further demonstrated that a large model order is required to estimate all poles and residues of the original noisy signals, and that the row number corresponding to a weak mode of the isolated pole matrix could be easily determined via finite element analysis or engineering experiences. Therefore, the proposed approach provides not only modal parameters, such as frequencies and damping ratios of true weak modes buried in high-level noise, but also the discrete time series of the weak mode.

Tension leg platform (TLP) for offshore wind turbine support is a new type structure in wind energy utilization. The strong-interaction method is used in analyzing the coupled model, and the dynamic characteristics of the TLP for offshore wind turbine support are recognized. As shown by the calculated results:for the lower modes, the shapes are water’s vibration, and the vibration of water induces the structure’s swing;the mode shapes of the structure are complex, and can largely change among different members;the mode shapes of the platform are related to the tower’s.The frequencies of the structure do not change much after adjusting the length of the tension cables and the depth of the platform;the TLP has good adaptability for the water depths and the environment loads. The change of the size and parameters of TLP can improve the dynamic characteristics, which can reduce the vibration of the TLP caused by the loads.Through the vibration analysis, the natural vibration frequencies of TLP can be distinguished from the frequencies of condition loads, and thus the resonance vibration can be avoided, therefore the offshore wind turbine can work normally in the complex conditions.

Fixed offshore wind turbines usually have large underwater supporting structures. The fluid influences the dynamic characteristics of the structure system. The dynamic model of a 5-MW tripod offshore wind turbine considering the pile–soil system and fluid structure interaction (FSI) is established, and the structural modes in air and in water are obtained by use of ANSYS. By comparing low-order natural frequencies and mode shapes, the influence of sea water on the free vibration characteristics of offshore wind turbine is analyzed. On basis of the above work, seismic responses under excitation by El-Centro waves are calculated by the time-history analysis method. The results reveal that the dynamic responses such as the lateral displacement of the foundation and the section bending moment of the tubular piles increase substantially under the influence of the added-mass and hydrodynamic pressure of sea water. The method and conclusions presented in this paper can provide a theoretical reference for structure design and analysis of offshore wind turbines fixed in deep seawater.

In this paper theoretical models are proposed for computing the natural frequencies and modal shapes of two-dimensional asymmetric and symmetric moonpools in the finite water depth. The boundary value problem is solved by using a domain decomposition approach. On the outer vertical boundary bounded by the beam of the two bodies, linearized velocity potential is assumed to be nil. Eigenvalue problem is formulated by matching the velocity potential and fluid flux on the common boundaries to obtain the natural frequencies and modal shapes of the free surface elevation. In the symmetric moonpool cases, so-called single mode approximations (SMA) have been derived and can be adopted for rapid estimation of the natural frequencies for both piston and sloshing modes. The present results have been extensively compared with the solutions using the two-dimensional infinite water depth model developed by Molin [1], the numerical solutions and experimental data by Faltinsen et al. [2]. It is found that the solutions have been improved from the infinite water depth model. It is demonstrated that the proposed models can well predict the resonance frequencies and modal shapes for the two-dimensional asymmetric and symmetric moonpools.

For convenience of dynamic analysis, some offshore structures such as fixed-type platforms are often modeled as the wedge beams supporting tip lumped masses. It is well-known that, due to the effect of the surrounding water, the natural frequencies of a beam in air (or dry beam) are different from those of the same beam immersed in water (or wet beam). However, if the natural frequencies and the associated mode shapes of a dry beam are calculated by taking account of the “added mass” for the immersed beam, then the last natural frequencies and mode shapes will be equal to the corresponding ones of the wet beam. Based on the last concept, the closed form solutions for natural frequencies and the associated mode shapes of the dry beam were determined first, then the partial differential equation of motion for the wet beam was transformed into a matrix equation by using the expansion theorem and the foregoing closed form solutions of free vibration responses for the dry beam. Solving the last matrix equation will give the required natural frequencies and the associated mode shapes of the wet beam. The formulation of this paper is available for the fully or partially immersed double tapered beams with either circular, square or rectangular cross-sections. The taper ratio for width and that for depth may be equal or unequal. The numerical results of this paper were compared with the existing results or the finite-element-method results and good agreement was achieved.

Like any other engineering structure, the dynamic aspects of semisubmersible offshore platforms require serious consideration. The free vibrations of the semisubmersible structures have been investigated in the present work, in which the effect of the variation of the length, draft and hull spacings on the natural frequencies and mode shapes has been studied and the nature of the variations and their reasons have been discussed.
