Biological Degradation of 2,4-Dinitrotoluene in a Continuous Bioreactor and Kinetic Studies Experimental results on the aerobic biological degradation with complete mineralization of 2,4-dinitrotoluene (2,4-DNT) are presented. A culture of Pseudomonas sp. DNT from Spain and Nishino was used. The degradation was examined with batch cultures for the determination of kinetic and stoichiometric coefficients. Further experiments were carried out with a continuous culture in a fixed-bed reactor with recirculation in order to obtain high degradation rates. The reactor was packed with ceramic Raschig rings (55 mL) and had a liquid reaction volume of 160 mL. The minimal salt media from Spanggord et al. with and without (NH4)2S)4 as nitrogen source was used as substrate. 2,4-DNT was the sole source of carbon and energy. From batch experiments a yield coefficient YB/S = (0.30 ± 0.05) g g?1 was calculated from a mass balance of the elements. This result was confirmed by calculations using literature data. Fitting the experimental data to the Monod equation, μmax = 0.1 h?1 and KS = 0.01…0.03 mmol L?1 were obtained. It was demonstrated by batch experiments that 2,4-DNT is not only used as the source of carbon and energy but also as the nitrogen source. In the fixed-bed reactor, a degradation of 92…97% was reached with a maximal 2,4-DNT load of 95 mg L?1 h?1. The rate of continuous degradation could be described by a pseudo-first-order reaction (k = 9.73 h?1). The complete mineralization of 2,4-DNT was verified by the measurement of DOC and the formed nitrite and nitrate. The formed nitrite was nitrified simultaneously. It was demonstrated by these experiments that large scale biological treatment of industrial effluent containing 2,4-DNT may be successful.  相似文献

This study presents the preliminary results of the local energy budget and dynamic characteristics of the surface atmospheric boundary-layer (SBL) during the WELSONS (wind erosion and losses of soil nutrients in semiarid Spain) experiment. Some Mediterranean regions suffer land degradation by wind erosion as a consequence of their particular soil and climate conditions and inappropriate agricultural practice. In Spain, where land degradation by water erosion is well known, the lack of field studies to quantify soils losses by wind erosion resulted in the European Community organizing a scientific program for this specific issue. The European programme known as WELSONS was devoted to study the wind erosion process in central Aragon (NE Spain). This multidisciplinary experiment, which began in 1996 and finished in 1998, was carried out over an agricultural soil which was left fallow. Within the experimental field, two plots were delimited where two tillage treatments were applied, a mould-board ploughing (or conventional tillage denoted CT) and chisel ploughing (reduced tillage denoted RT). This was to study on bare soil the influence of tillage method on surface conditions, saltation flux, vertical dust flux, erosion rates, dynamics characteristics such as friction velocity, roughness length, etc., and energy budget. The partitioning of the available energy, resulting from the dynamics of the SBL, are quite different over the two plots because of their own peculiar soil and surface properties. The first results show that the RT treatment seems to provide a wind erosion protection. Because of the long data recording time and particular phenomena (formation of a crust at the soil surface, very dry conditions, high wind speed for instance), these microclimatological data acquired during the WELSONS programmes may be helpful to test atmospheric boundary-layer models coupled with soil models.  相似文献

This research characterizes the weathering of natural building stone using an unsteady‐state portable probe permeameter. Variations between the permeability properties of fresh rock and the same rocks after the early stages of a salt weathering simulation are used to examine the effects of salt accumulation on spatial variations in surface rock permeability properties in two limestones from Spain. The Fraga and Tudela limestones are from the Ebro basin and are of Miocene age. Both stone types figure largely in the architectural heritage of Spain and, in common with many other building limestones, they are prone to physical damage from salt crystallization in pore spaces. To examine feedbacks associated with salt accumulation during the early stages of this weathering process, samples of the two stone types were subjected to simulated salt weathering under laboratory conditions using magnesium sulphate and sodium chloride at concentrations of 5% and 15%. Permeability mapping and statistical analysis (aspatial statistics and spatial prediction) before and after salt accumulation are used to assess changes in the spatial variability of permeability and to correlate these changes with salt movement, porosity change, potential rock deterioration and textural characteristics. Statistical analyses of small‐scale permeability measurements are used to evaluate the drivers for decay and hence aid the prediction of the weathering behaviour of the two limestones. The transfer of the s-triazine herbicides onto a salt marsh and their subsequent behaviour and fate has been investigated in a series of laboratory-based experiments. The results indicate that atrazine and simazine enter the marsh system and undergo negligible adsorption onto suspended solids. Herbicide accumulation within the sediment compartment was thought to be due to other mechanisms such as partitioning into the surface microlayer, or association with sediment flocs. s-Triazine mobility within the sediment was dictated by compound and sediment type, reflecting greater mobility in the mud flat than the vegetated marsh sediment. The majority of the herbicides were, however, retained in the uppermost layers of the sediment profile indicating that salt marsh sediments act as a sink for these compounds. Although degradation rates in the sediment were relatively rapid, detectable levels of the parent compounds were still evident after 71 days, which implies that these compounds may persist in salt marsh sediments. The absence of degradation in the aqueous phase implies that adsorption to particulate matter is a prerequisite for the degradation of the s-triazine herbicides.  相似文献

The geomagnetic field variation pattern in the second and third quarters of the first millennium BC is obtained from data on ceramic material sampled in the Los Villares multilayer archaeological monument (Spain). The analysis of available data on the geomagnetic field variation in Spain over the last seven millennia shows that it is similar to the geomagnetic variation pattern observed in other Eurasian regions. The amplitude of the “fundamental” (8000-yr) oscillation (≈20 μT) estimated from the Spain data exceeds significantly its amplitudes in other regions, which supports the previously noted tendency to a westward increase in the amplitude of the fundamental oscillation.  相似文献

Sediment toxicity assessments using caged organisms present advantages over using laboratory and native community studies. The use of caged Arenicola marina in sediment toxicity assessments was evaluated. Lugworms were exposed in situ to sediments from coastal and port areas in Spain for seven days, and the activities of the biotransformation enzymes ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase, dibenzylfluorescein dealkylase and glutathione S-transferase, the activities of the antioxidant enzymes glutathione reductase and glutathione peroxidase and lipid peroxidation were then analyzed as biomarkers. Biomarker results and sediment physicochemical data were integrated. Cádiz Bay (SW Spain) sediments presented metal contamination that was not linked to a biochemical response. In LPGC Port (SW Spain), Pb contamination exhibited a moderate toxic potential, while PAHs, and presumably pharmaceuticals, provoked biochemical responses that efficiently prevented lipid peroxidation. In Santander Bay (N Spain), exposure to PAHs and, presumably, pharmaceuticals induced biomarker responses, but lipid peroxidation occurred nevertheless. These results indicated that caged A. marina were effective for the assessment of sediment quality and that the selected biomarkers were sufficiently sensitive to identify chemical exposure and toxicity.  相似文献

Four large-scale rainfall simulation experiments were conducted in Spain to improve the understanding of the relationship between soil water dynamics, soil erosion and land degradation. On different shrublands and an abandoned field, hydrological characteristics were determined in relation to spatial patterns in soil, vegetation and morphology. During the experiments on shrubland, runoff at fine scales occurred shortly after the start of the experiments. Rapid and non-uniform infiltration near vegetation clusters, related to preferential flowpaths of water, was observed. This prevented the development of runoff over distances larger than 1 metre. The surface redistribution of water was not observed on the abandoned land. Here, little vegetation structure was present and infiltration rates were high below crusts as well as stones. We suggest that the development of spatial structures in vegetation and soil forms a positive feedback with non-uniform infiltration and increased soil water retention. The assessment of land degradation could benefit greatly from acknowledging the importance of non-uniformity in hydrological processes. Furthermore, the presented measurements indicate that in discontinuous environments runoff measurements at fine scales cannot be extrapolated directly. In these environments a scaled approach needs to be adopted emphasizing the importance of different hydrological processes at different scales.  相似文献

Five granites from NW Spain were subjected to two salt‐spray weathering tests under controlled atmospheric conditions. Granite samples were exposed to a sodium chloride solution in the first test and to a complex solution (sea water) in the second. Subsequent examination of the rocks by light and petrographic microscopy clearly demonstrated the development of different weathering morphologies in each test. The distribution of dissolved ions in samples taken at different depths from the weathered surfaces at the end of the experiments, and the changes in weight of the samples during the tests, also differed. In our opinion, these results were determined by the nature of the solution used; although sodium chloride is the predominant salt in sea water, the presence of other ions modifies its solubility, thereby varying the dynamics of mobility and precipitation and thus the weathering morphology that develops. General, parallel and rotational degradation and the effect of bed sills are investigated with the aid of historical field data and laboratory experiments. The case under consideration is a system of two tributaries and a main river in northeast Spain, characterized by its short length, steepness and ephemeral nature. The comparison of bed profiles since 1962 revealed an incision greater than 5·5 m. The main causes of degradation are thought to be channelization (width reduction) and urban growth. The equilibrium slopes with and without sills were obtained in 111 live‐bed flume tests. It is demonstrated that the bed slope is milder with sills than without sills under the same flow and sediment rates. The equations for the calculation of equilibrium slopes, scaled to prototype, are applied to the case‐study, with good agreement. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley and Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The biodegradability of 5 different commercially available common photographic developers and their ingredients hydroquinone, isoascorbic acid, and its sodium salt was determined in parallel using the OECD-screening-test (OECD 301E). The results obtained from the degradation test on hydroquinone were compared with the results of other laboratories. Biodegradability of developers containing isoascorbic acid was in the same range as of comparable products containing hydroquinone.  相似文献

Abstract

The Agua Amarga coastal aquifer has been the object of a succession of anthropogenic interventions over the last 90 years: (a) the operation of saltworks from 1925 to 1975; (b) the withdrawal, since 2003, of groundwater from the aquifer along the coast line; and (c) the programme of pouring seawater over the salt marsh, carried out since 2009, to recover the piezometric levels and the soil moisture conditions. For a better understanding of how these past and present human activities have affected the natural groundwater regime, and to validate certain hypotheses concerning the interpretation of experimental data on temperature depth profiles and piezometric and salinity changes, a numerical fluid flow and solute transport model was designed and applied to the period 1925–2010, using SEAWAT. This model reproduces, in a qualitative and quantitative way, the flow and transport processes that operated during this time, as well as the behaviour of the seawater wedge.

Prestack depth imaging of seismic data in complex areas such as salt structures requires extensive velocity model updating. In many cases, salt boundaries can be difficult to identify due to lack of seismic reflectivity. Traditional amplitude based segmentation methods do not properly tackle this problem, resulting in extensive manual editing. This paper presents a selection of seismic attributes that can reveal texture differences between the salt diapirs and the surrounding geology as opposed to amplitude‐sensitive attributes that are used in case of well defined boundaries. The approach consists of first extracting selected texture attributes, then using these attributes to train a classifier to estimate the probability that each pixel in the data set belongs to one of the following classes: near‐horizontal layering, highly‐dipping areas and the inside of the salt that appears more like a low amplitude area with small variations in texture. To find the border between the inside of the salt and the highly‐dipping surroundings, the posterior probability of the class salt is input to a graph‐cut algorithm that produces a smooth, continuous border. An in‐line seismic section and a timeslice from a 3D North Sea data set were employed to test the proposed approach. Comparisons between the automatically segmented salt contours and the corresponding contours as provided by an experienced interpreter showed a high degree of similarity.  相似文献

Fish-based indices monitor changes in surface waters and are a valuable aid in communication by summarising complex information about the environment (Harrison and Whitfield, 2004). A zone-specific fish-based multimetric estuarine index of biotic integrity (Z-EBI) was developed based on a 13 year time series of fish surveys from the Zeeschelde estuary (Belgium). Sites were pre-classified using indicators of anthropogenic impact. Metrics showing a monotone response with pressure classes were selected for further analysis. Thresholds for the good ecological potential (GEP) were defined from references. A modified trisection was applied for the other thresholds. The Z-EBI is defined by the average of the metric scores calculated over a one year period and translated into an ecological quality ratio (EQR). The indices integrate structural and functional qualities of the estuarine fish communities. The Z-EBI performances were successfully validated for habitat degradation in the various habitat zones.  相似文献

During a one‐year period temporal and spatial variations in suspended sediment concentration (SSC) and deposition were studied on a salt and freshwater tidal marsh in the Scheldt estuary (Belgium, SW Netherlands) using automatic water sampling stations and sediment traps. Temporal variations were found to be controlled by tidal inundation. The initial SSC, measured above the marsh surface at the beginning of inundation events, increases linearly with inundation height at high tide. In accordance with this an exponential relationship is observed between inundation time and sedimentation rates, measured over 25 spring–neap cycles. In addition both SSC and sedimentation rates are higher during winter than during summer for the same inundation height or time. Although spatial differences in vegetation characteristics are large between and within the studied salt and freshwater marsh, they do not affect the spatial sedimentation pattern. Sedimentation rates however strongly decrease with increasing (1) surface elevation, (2) distance from the nearest creek or marsh edge and (3) distance from the marsh edge measured along the nearest creek. Based on these three morphometric parameters, the spatio‐temporal sedimentation pattern can be modelled very well using a single multiple regression model for both the salt and freshwater marsh. Salt diapirs in southern Iran are typically in contact with karstic and alluvial aquifers and consequently they are the most likely sources of groundwater salinization in this arid region. However, there are some salt diapirs that have no significant degradation effect on adjacent aquifers. Assessments of 62 of 122 Iranian‐emerged salt diapirs based on geological, geomorphological, hydrogeological, and hydrochemical investigations indicated that 45% of the studied salt diapirs did not have a negative impact on surrounding water resources, whereas 55% of the salt diapirs have degraded water quality of adjacent aquifers. The impacts ranged from low‐ to high‐grade salinization. We characterize here four major factors that control the impact of salt diapirs on surrounding water resources: (1) the evolutionary stage of the diapir, (2) the geological and (3) hydrogeological setting of the diapir, and (4) human activities. Identification of the major factors governing the influence of salt diapirs on the adjacent aquifers is necessary to understand the mechanism of salt diapir impact on adjacent aquifers, and subsequently to decide how to mitigate the deteriorating effect of the diapirs on the surrounding water resources.  相似文献

溴是完备工业体系的关键必备元素。盐湖卤水是溴的重要来源。青藏高原盐湖众多,富含钾、锂、硼等资源元素,开发潜力巨大。然而,目前针对青藏高原盐湖溴浓度、分布特征及其物源的研究仍然薄弱。本次研究采集了26个青藏高原盐湖表卤水样品并分析其溴浓度,进一步总结其他64个已报道盐湖数据,系统分析了青藏高原盐湖溴浓度分布特征,并进一步探讨了溴的可能物源。结果表明:青藏高原盐湖表卤水溴分布在0.5~246.8 mg/L之间,平均为41.1 mg/L,其中,碳酸盐型盐湖卤水平均溴浓度最高(47.0 mg/L),且集中分布在高原南部,而氯化物型盐湖平均溴浓度最低(30.1mg/L),盐湖溴浓度呈现自南向北降低的趋势;青藏高原盐湖中溴有多种来源,高原南部富溴盐湖溴的来源可能主要与热泉补给有关,而柴达木盆地盐湖高溴来源可能主要与深部地层水(如油田水、背斜构造裂隙孔隙水、砂砾孔隙卤水、气田水等)补给有关。  相似文献

Data on the geomagnetic field intensity in the first millennium BC and the 8th–10th centuries AD are obtained from the study of materials from the El Molon archaeological monument (Spain). A 75-yr averaged curve of the variation in the geomagnetic field intensity in the area of the zero meridian over the last three millennia is constructed from a set of new and previously obtained data on the geomagnetic intensity variations in Spain and France. The field intensity smoothly decreases in the time interval studied, and variations a few centuries long are superimposed on this trend. Unlike the present-day relationship, the average level of the geomagnetic field intensity in Spain in the first millennium BC was higher than in the Caucasus.  相似文献

In two survey phases (2003 and 2008) organic, nutrient and salt contamination parameters have been investigated in the lower Werra in order to estimate the importance of these different kinds of pollution for the quality component of macroinvertebrates according to the European Water Framework Directive. The chemical and biological investigations have been carried out comparing a “reference” section without salt contamination with the salt contaminated section due to the potash mining industry from Vacha to Hannoversch Münden close to the mouth of the Werra. The results show that the drastic differences between the macroinvertebrate assemblages of the Werra upstream and downstream the salt contaminated sections are clearly caused by the salt load. The other kinds of chemical impacts are not responsible for the observed fundamental change within the composition of the benthic invertebrate assemblage. General degradation of stream morphology, indicated by macroinvertebrates, shows a good ecological status for the non-salt-contaminated part of the river and a bad status for the salt contaminated sites of the lower Werra.  相似文献

Groundwater discharge from the Riverine Plains of the southern Murray‐Darling Basin is a major process contributing salt to the Murray River in Australia. In this study, data from an irrigated 60 000 ha catchment in the Riverine Plains were analysed to understand groundwater discharge into deeply incised drains, the process dominating salt mobilization from the catchment. We applied three integrated methodologies: classification and regression trees (CART), conceptual modelling and artificial neural networks (ANNs) to a comprehensive, spatially lumped, monthly data set from July 1975 to December 2004. Using CART analysis, it was shown that rainfall was the most important variable consistently explaining the salt load patterns at the catchment outlet. Using the conceptual model representing spatially lumped groundwater discharge into deeply incised drains, we demonstrated that salt mobilization from the study catchment can be well represented by a rainfall contribution, influenced by the hydraulic head in the deep regional aquifer and potential evapotranspiration. Using ANNs, it was confirmed that rainfall had a much higher impact on salt loads at the catchment outlet than irrigation water use. All these results demonstrate that under conditions similar to those experienced from 1975 to 2004, it is rainfall rather than irrigation water use that governs salt mobilization from the study catchment. Management of salt mobilization from irrigated catchments has traditionally focussed on the improvement of irrigation practices but it could be equally important to further understand the scope for management to control groundwater discharge in these irrigation areas. The oxidation-reduction status of Gulf Coast wetland sediment greatly influenced hydrocarbon breakdown. Degradation of 14C-labelled octadecane and 14C-labelled naphthalene was faster in oxidized (+500 mV) sediment compared with reduced (?200 mV) sediment. Naphthalene showed no breakdown in reduced anaerobic sediment. However, a shift from strict anaerobic to aerobic conditions markedly increased napthalene degradation. An oxidized layer of sediment overlying reduced sediment was identified in several zones in a Louisiana salt marsh. Hydrocarbon degradation is likely to be greater in the oxidized surface layer.  相似文献
