Juvenile Mytilus edulis were exposed to 0.1–10.0 μg TBTO l−1 in flowing raw seawater, and the shell length growth was measured in 24–48 h intervals for 7 days. Significant reductions in length growth rate occurred at ≥0.4 μg TBTO l−1. The relationship between TBTO concentration and growth response is approximately hyperbolic.  相似文献

High concentrations of mercury have been measured in mussels (Mytilus edulis) collected in two ‘hot spot’ areas: (1) near a closed-down chemical factory on the west coast of the Limfjord, and (2) on groynes in the immediate vicinity of a chemical deposit in the dunes on the Danish west coast. By collecting comparable samples of mussels from chains of buoys, the mercury pollution in the western Limfjord could be traced 50–100 km into the central and innermost parts of the Limfjord as a gradual decreasing mercury concentration gradient. By collecting mussels from groynes north and south of the chemical deposit, it was possible to monitor the relative extent of the mercury leakage to the North Sea before and after the excavation of the deposit. The investigations have demonstrated the applicability of M. edulis as a monitoring organism for mercury when importance is attached to concentration gradients and distribution patterns in well defined and homogeneous samples of mussels collected from natural populations.  相似文献

Crassostrea gigas spat were cultured for 8 weeks in the presence of a mixed algal diet in experimental tanks containing bis (tributyl tin) oxide (TBTO) alone, TBTO and a marine sediment, or a marine sediment alone. Growth measurements taken on a weekly basis showed enhanced weight gain in oysters exposed to nominal 50 and 100 mg l?1 concentrations of marine sediment alone. Spat in low level TBTO treatments (0.15 μg l?1) grew less well than the controls and showed pronounced thickening of the upper shell valve. High levels of TBTO (1.6 μg l?1) severely inhibited oyster growth. Tissue concentrations of TBT compounds were measured at the end of the experiment. Bio-concentration factors of 3000- and 10000-fold were demonstrated for the high and low TBTO treatments respectively.  相似文献

The general effects of the Eleni V oil spill on fisheries and intertidal organisms are described. There appears to have been little damage except by direct smothering. Oil hydrocarbon concentrations have been followed in a small intertidal population of mussels (Mytilus edulis) at Corton beach. Although the area became visually clean of oil, hydrocarbon concentrations in mussel flesh remained high 12 months after the spill and depuration rates in the laboratory were very slow. Shrimps (Crangon crangon) exposed to a water extract of beached Eleni V oil for 42 days showed no ill effects and little uptake of hydrocarbons. At the North Harbour site, where beached oil has not been disturbed, it appears that the fauna, used to oil contamination from other sources, has been little affected by the additional Eleni V oil.  相似文献

The sediments of rivers draining areas of past mining activity in the Isle of Man contained greatly enhanced levels of zinc, lead and, to a lesser extent, copper and cadmium. This contamination extended into the estuarine harbours where it was reflected in the metal content of four species of bivalve molluscs. Of the latter, Mytilus edulis was the most useful indicator species in that it occurred in all five estuarine harbours but Scrobicularia plana, although of more limited distribution, concentrated much higher levels of zinc and lead. Individual variation of metal levels was high in all species of bivalves examined; a negative correlation of dry weight: metal content was demonstrated in many cases, but other factors may also contribute to such variation.  相似文献

The coastal waters of Hong Kong constitute a transition from estuarine conditions in the west to more oceanic conditions in the east, with a major discharge of untreated sewage located at the mid-point. Chlorophyll a was determined and net phytoplankton was sampled at 45 stations throughout this transition. Over a period of 20 months, chlorophyll a values rarely exceeded 2 μg l.?1 in unpolluted coastal waters. Estuarine waters generally contained 2–6 μg l.?1 and, in waters influenced by sewage discharge, values sometimes exceeded 20 μg l.?1. There was no evidence of a reduction in taxonomic diversity in polluted areas except in summer, when the net phytoplankton was dominated by Chaetoceros spp. In the autumn and early winter, Skeletonema costatum was abundant in the central polluted areas.  相似文献

During the spring seasons of 1983, 1986 and 1987 the development of phytoplankton in Lake Zürich was investigated (from February to May) using samples taken at short term intervals. The aim was to describe the effects of the short term dynamics of environmental factors on the algal growth. The results could then be used to discuss the existing theories to assess the start of phytoplankton growth pulses in spring. Only 7 to 10 days without wind driven vertical mixing were required in spring to start the first growth pulse, despite of a still very unstable water column (sometimes inverse thermal stratification). Mainly flagellates andStephanodiscus hantzschii increased their biomass and achieved net growth rates of 0.1 and up to 0.65 d−1 respectively. During such a phase the mixing depth was always smaller than the euphotic depth. Later on, at the start of the spring bloom (=last growth pulse in spring before the clear water stage), the intensity of vertical mixing as well as the mixing depth were markedly reduced due to an increase in heat input and low wind. Then flagellates dominated (contribution up to 75.5% of the areal biomass reaching 60 g fresh weight m−2) and the growth rate rose to a maximum of 0.65 d−1. Standard models of critical depth considers that there is only a biomass increase if the mixing depth is smaller than the depth of a water layer positive balanced between production and respiration. This model for determining the beginning of a phytoplankton growth pulse in spring takes no account of the favorable light conditions for phytoplankton cells at calm and sunny days in February and March. The newly developed threshold value model takes these situations into account: It assumes that the phytoplankton biomass increases when the calculated effective light climate is equal or greater than a previously fixed threshold. The calculations are based on the mean light intensity within the mixed layer at windy days or within the euphotic depth (z eu) at calm days. In Lake Zürich a minimum of 0.2 106 J m−2d−1 (=0.9 mol quanta m−2d−1) has to be reached or surpassed in at least 3 days before an exponential increase of algal biomass can occur. The value does not depend on short term fluctuations in neither radiation nor mixing depth. It seems that this value is rather low comparing with those of investigations in other water bodies (up to 0.8 106 J m−2 d−1) but high related to values from algal cultures (0.02 106 J m−2d−1). As the weather can only be forecasted a few days ahead with any certainty the period for a more or less accurate prediction of an algal bloom is restricted to about 1 to 5 days.  相似文献

The LC50-values of As3+-compounds for Channa punctatus are determined for a 48-h exposure to 19.4 (18.02… 21.3) mg/1 and for a 96-h exposure to 14.3 (13.06… 16.80) mg/1. At a long-time exposure to 7.0 mg/1 As3+, during the first seven days there does not occur any change of growth, then the growth in length and the increase in weight decreased by 6.6 and 11.7%, respectively, till the 31st day. At the same time, the RNA content of the muscle decreased by 11.5% to 966.7 μg/g fresh weight and the protein content decreased by 12.5 % to 95.39 mg/g fresh weight.  相似文献

Laboratory reared veliger larvae of the common mussel Mytilus edulis were grown for 15 days in filtered seawater containing 10 μg l?1, 1 μg l?1 and 0.1 μg l?1 tributyltin oxide (TBTO), the biocide in recent antifouling paint formulations. No larvae survived longer than 5 days in 10 μg l?1 TBTO or 10 days in 1 μg l?1 TBTO. Approximately half the larvae subjected to 0.1 μg l?1 TBTO were dead by day 15 (approximate 15 day LC50 = 0.1 μg l?1 TBTO) and most of the surviving larvae were moribund and had grown significantly more slowly than controls. It is noted that current recorded levels of TBT at several UK estuarine sites are higher than 0.1 μg l?1 and there has therefore probably been a high mortality of mussel larvae at such sites. The results are discussed in relation to the reported short-term toxicity of organotins to other marine organisms and the value of carrying out longer-term tests at low levels of TBT is pointed out.  相似文献

In order to refine the utilization of Mytilus edulis as a pollution indicator species, the relationship between cadmium concentration and mussel body weight was investigated at different sites in the Estuary and Gulf of the St. Lawrence. Our data show that the regression coefficients become considerably more variable when animals enter adulthood and that the variations are probably related to biochemical changes occurring during the sexual cycle. A substantial improvement of the applicability of mussels for monitoring marine pollution can be achieved by using only immature animals. This should reduce the influence of metabolism on the metal content of mussels and thereby give a more precise indication of ambiant pollution levels.  相似文献

The condition for being able to determine pr with the directions is observation by means of the three-directional vertex method[2], because it is not possible to localize lateral refraction by angular methods. The theory of complete weight is in favour of observations with a high fundamental weight p 0 which automatically yield higher values of t, and also of pt. The introduction of the complete weight into the experimental directional net in Fig. 2 caused the mean value of the uneliminated refraction error to decrease from 0.24 to 0.12, the mean square error of the adjusted direction being 0.17. The value of the constant c was investigated and the method of determining the parameter pr was derived also for lengths measured electro-optically. Water use efficiency (WUE) links carbon and water exchanges between farmlands and the atmosphere. Understanding the variation and attribution of WUE is essential to reveal the physiological and ecological adaptation mechanisms of crops to the changing environment, and to better allocate, regulate and conserve water resources. However, few studies on the variation and attribution of WUE have been conducted in irrigated arid or semi-arid farmlands. Therefore, in this study, water and carbon fluxes were measured using eddy covariance systems in two farmlands (one sunflower field and one maize field) in a semi-arid irrigation district in China. It was found that the average WUE of sunflower during its full growth period was 1.72 g C kg−1 H2O, much lower than that of maize (4.07 g C kg−1 H2O). At each growth stage, the WUE of both crops were negatively correlated with vapour pressure deficit (VPD), net radiation (Rn) and soil water content (SWC). The negative correlations could be attributed to the arid meteorological condition and the relatively abundant soil moisture due to irrigation and shallow groundwater levels. VPD was the main factor affecting WUE, followed by Rn and SWC. It was also found that the response of WUE to crop leaf area index (LAI) and to canopy conductance (gc) depended on the VPD ranges: when VPD increased, the response of WUE to LAI and to gc decreased. Our findings could improve the understanding of the coupling effect of water and carbon fluxes over farmland ecosystems in arid and semi-arid irrigation areas and help improve agricultural production and save water resources in such areas.  相似文献

The Western Scheldt river and estuary is known to be highly polluted as it receives industrial, agricultural and domestic effluents from one of the most populated and industrialised zones in Europe. Aquatic organisms are exposed to pollutants, specifically metals that are present in different environmental phases, e.g. dissolved, suspended material or sediment phases. The objective of this study was to study the relationship that exists between environmental metal levels, the degree of metal uptake by aquatic organisms with the concomitant biological responses. For this purpose the bivalve mollusk, Mytilus edulis, was selected as bioaccumulation indicator organism. Environmental (water and sediment) and mussel samples were collected during the late winter (March 2000) from sampling sites in the Scheldt estuary. Sites were selected to represent a salinity gradient from the mouth of the estuary to the furthest distribution area of mussels upstream in the system. Together with standard water quality parameters (e.g. salinity, dissolved oxygen, dissolved organic carbon, etc.) concentrations of twelve metals were analysed in the water (dissolved and suspended matter) and sediments. Levels of these metals were also measured in the soft tissue of M. edulis, together with concomitant biomarker responses in resident mussel populations at each site. The biomarkers that were included in this study were condition index, scope for growth, survival in air, cell membrane stability, DNA damage, and metallothioneins. Data were subjected to multivariate statistical analysis. The physico-chemical parameters and metals in the environmental samples clustered the sites to reflect the distribution based on the salinity gradient. Bioaccumulation results revealed increased metal uptake along a pollution gradient with the highest metal bioaccumulation occurring at the upstream most sites and therefore closest to the in the industrial activities. However, the biomarker responses clustered the sites in a manner that reflected the influence of combination of internal exposure (bioaccumulation) and external exposure (physico-chemical conditions). These differences in biomarker responses clearly demonstrated were attributed to abiotic factors other than metal pollution alone e.g. localized short-term increases in increased suspended sediment concentrations and decreased dissolved oxygen concentrations.  相似文献

Exposure of Mytilus edulis to dissolved copper led to a decrease in heart rate and filtration rate. After 4 days exposure to copper, the concentration of copper causing a 50% reduction in heart rate (EC50) was 0.17 ppm. After 5 days exposure to copper, the EC50 for filtration rate was only 0.002 ppm copper. Reductions in heart rate and filtration rate are not caused by valve or siphon closure.  相似文献

The southern Yellow Sea (SYS), located to the north of the East China Sea (ECS), was considered part of the ECS when Tsunogai et al. (1999) proposed the “continental shelf pump” (CSP) hypothesis. However, the original CSP carbon dioxide (CO2) uptake flux (2.9 mol C m−2 yr−1) appears to have been overestimated, primarily due to the differences between the SYS and the ECS in terms of their CO2 system. In this paper, we estimated air-sea CO2 fluxes in the SYS using the surface water partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) measured in winter, spring, and summer, as well as that estimated in fall via the relationship of pCO2 with salinity, temperature, and chlorophyll a. The results indicate that overall, the entire investigated area was a net source of atmospheric CO2 during summer, winter, and fall, whereas it was a net sink during spring. Spatially, the nearshore area was almost a permanent CO2 source, while the central SYS shifted from being a CO2 sink in spring to a source in the other seasons of the year. Overall, the SYS is a net source of atmospheric CO2 on an annual scale, releasing ∼7.38 Tg C (1 Tg=1012 g) to the atmosphere annually. Thus, the updated CO2 uptake flux in the combined SYS and ECS is reduced to ∼0.86 mol C m−2 yr−1. If this value is extrapolated globally following Tsunogai et al. (1999), the global continental shelf would be a sink of ∼0.29 Pg C yr−1, instead of 1 Pg C yr−1 (1 Pg=1015 g).The SYS as a net annual source of atmospheric CO2 is in sharp contrast to most mid- and high-latitude continental shelves, which are CO2 sinks. We argue that unlike the ECS and the North Sea where carbon on the shelf could be exported to the open ocean, the SYS lacks the physical conditions required by the CSP to transport carbon off the shelf effectively. The global validity of the CSP theory is thus questionable.  相似文献

We report new data on oxygen isotopes in marine sulfate (δ18OSO4), measured in marine barite (BaSO4), over the Cenozoic. The δ18OSO4 varies by 6‰ over the Cenozoic, with major peaks 3, 15, 30 and 55 Ma. The δ18OSO4 does not co-vary with the δ34SSO4, emphasizing that different processes control the oxygen and sulfur isotopic composition of sulfate. This indicates that temporal changes in the δ18OSO4 over the Cenozoic must reflect changes in the isotopic fractionation associated with the sulfide reoxidation pathway. This suggests that variations in the aerial extent of different types of organic-rich sediments may have a significant impact on the biogeochemical sulfur cycle and emphasizes that the sulfur cycle is less sensitive to net organic carbon burial than to changes in the conditions of that organic carbon burial. The δ18OSO4 also does not co-vary with the δ18O measured in benthic foraminifera, emphasizing that oxygen isotopes in water and sulfate remain out of equilibrium over the lifetime of sulfate in the ocean. A simple box model was used to explore dynamics of the marine sulfur cycle with respect to both oxygen and sulfur isotopes over the Cenozoic. We interpret variability in the δ18OSO4 to reflect changes in the aerial distribution of conditions within organic-rich sediments, from periods with more localized, organic-rich sediments, to periods with more diffuse organic carbon burial. While these changes may not impact the net organic carbon burial, they will greatly affect the way that sulfur is processed within organic-rich sediments, impacting the sulfide reoxidation pathway and thus the δ18OSO4. Our qualitative interpretation of the record suggests that sulfate concentrations were probably lower earlier in the Cenozoic.  相似文献

The effects of prolonged exposure to reduced oxygen levels (3.0 and 1.5 mg O2 l−1) on marine scavenging gastropods Nassarius festivus were studied for 8 weeks. The percentages of individuals engaged in feeding and amount of food consumed were reduced as oxygen level decreased; absorption efficiency, however, did not vary significantly with oxygen level. Oxygen consumption rates and specific oxygen consumption rates were lower at reduced oxygen levels. Reproduction occurred at all oxygen levels with less egg capsules being produced at lower oxygen levels. Egg size and number of eggs per capsule, however, were not significantly affected by oxygen level. The increase in shell length was 12%, 6% and 5% at 6.0 mg O2 l−1 (normoxia), 3.0 mg O2 l−1 and 1.5 mg O2 l−1, respectively. At the end of the experiment, the amount of energy allocated to growth and reproduction decreased at reduced oxygen levels with values obtained at 3.0 mg O2 l−1 and 1.5 mg O2 l−1 being 48% and 70% lower than those at 6.0 mg O2 l−1. At all oxygen levels, most of the accumulated energy was allocated to shell growth and reproduction, and the amount allocated to somatic growth was relatively insignificant. The reduction in energy allocated to reproduction was greater than that to shell growth as the oxygen level was reduced, indicating a strategic energy allocation of marine scavengers under stressful conditions to enhance survival.  相似文献

Surface sediments and porewater from 12 sites within Xiamen offshore areas and organisms from a heavily contaminated site Yuandang Lagoon were sampled and analyzed for eight polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) congeners (-28, -47, -99, -100, -153, -154, -183 and -209). The total concentrations of eight PBDEs (∑8PBDEs) and BDE-209 in sediments ranged from 0.27 to 76.54 ng/g with an average of 16.31 ng/g and from 0.10 to 70.11 ng/g with an average of 14.94 ng/g, respectively. Concentrations of ∑8PBDEs in porewater ranged from 2.5 to 34.1 ng/L, with a mean value of 15.3 ng/L. In this study, the partition coefficients (log ) of PBDE congeners (without -209) were significantly correlated with their octanol-water partition coefficients (log KOW) (r2 = 0.74, P < 0.01). ∑8PBDE concentrations ranged from 0.33 to 1.26 ng/g (lipid weight) in marine organisms, and PBDE congener patterns were significantly different between fish and clam, crab.  相似文献

A population of Theodoxus fluviatilis L in the littoral zone of Lake Esrom was investigated from November 1977 to February 1979. The population was sampled every month in the winter period and twice during the rest of the year. Biomass was estimated as ash-free dry weight (AFDW) of the organic matter both of the soft parts of the animal and the shell itself. The relation between AFDW (c) and shell length (l) was log c=2.9509×log (l)−1.7120. The population comprised more than 1 year-class, which could be separated by shell length, by a narrow band on the shells and the growth of algae on the shell. The life cycle lasted years. The oldest animals had a shell length of 7.0-7.5 mm. A few individuals who were estimated to be years had a shell length up to 8.6 mm. Population density varied between 575 and 2115 individuals m−2 on the stony substratum. The average was 1160 individuals m−2. Mortality was low during the summer period. In winter many animals died due to the effect of ice and stormy weather on the stony substratum. Growth of the animals was estimated from the shell length. Maximum growth was observed from May to August with no growth during the winter. Egg capsules were found on the stones all year round. New capsules were found from late May to the middle of November. Most freshly laid capsules were observed in May-June and August-September. Capsules from the late summer hatched in spring and capsules laid in the spring hatched in August-September. The average annual net production for the whole population was estimated by three methods. The Allen curve method gave 1.895 AFDW m−2, the growth-increment method gave 1.784 mg AFDW m−2 and the Hynes method 2.284 mg AFDW m−2. Corresponding estimated P/B ratios were 1.29, 1.30 and 1.57. Annual net-production of the four investigated year-classes was 16 mg AFDW m−2 year−1 for 1975, 224 mg AFDW m−2 year−1 for 1976, 1.258 mg AFDW m−2 year−1 for 1977 and 287 mg AFDW m−2 year−1 for 1978. P/B ratios for the three oldest year-classes were, respectively, 0.32, 0.50 and 1.67. A comparison with other investigations on gastropod life cycles, reproduction and P/B ratios is made and differences discussed. Variations are correlated to temperature, and food quality and quantity.  相似文献
