In this paper we discuss the two mechanisms by which solar prominences on the limb can manifest themselves when observed in coronal UV – EUV lines and in the soft X-ray continuum. These mechanisms are the absorption in the resonance continua of hydrogen and helium on one hand and the reduction of the emissivity in a part of the coronal volume occupied by a prominence on the other one. We briefly describe earlier observations made with SOHO/SUMER, EIT and Yohkoh/SXT. We then discuss how the instruments on the new Japanese satellite Hinode can be used for more detailed studies of prominences. We also propose some combined observations between the Hinode satellite and the SOHO/SUMER instrument.  相似文献

Ly α and Ly β line profiles in a solar prominence were observed with high spatial and spectral resolution with SOHO/SUMER. Within a 60-arcsec scan, we measure a very large variety of profiles: not only reversed and nonreversed profiles but also red-peaked and blue-peaked ones in both lines. Such a spatial variability is probably related to both the fine structure in prominences and the different orientations of mass motions. The usage of integrated-intensity cuts along the SUMER slit allowed us to categorize the prominence in three regions. We computed average profiles and integrated intensities in these lines in the range 2.36 – 42.3 W m−2 sr−1 for Ly α and 0.027 – 0.237 W m−2 sr−1 for Ly β. As shown by theoretical modeling, the Ly α/Ly β ratio is very sensitive to geometrical and thermodynamic properties of fine structure in prominences. For some pixels, and in both lines, we found agreement between observed intensities and those predicted by one-dimensional models. But a close examination of the profiles indicated a rather systematic disagreement concerning their detailed shapes. The disagreement between observations and thread models (with ambipolar diffusion) leads us to speculate about the importance of the temperature gradient between the cool and coronal regions. This gradient could depend on the orientation of field lines as proposed by Heinzel, Anzer, and Gunár (Astron. Astrophys. 442, 331, 2005).  相似文献

We study a time – latitudinal distribution of CMEs observed by the SOHO spacecraft, their projected speeds and associated magnetic fields, as well as the north – south (N – S) asymmetry of solar surface magnetic fields, and the coronal green line intensities. We have found that (a) there exists an intricate relation between the average projected velocity of CMEs and the mean value of large-scale magnetic fields; (b) there exists a pronounced N – S asymmetry in both the distribution and the number of CMEs; (c) this asymmetry is in favor of the northern hemisphere at the beginning of the cycle, and of the southern hemisphere from 2001 onward, being, in fact, (d) closely related with the N – S asymmetry in the distribution of large-scale magnetic fields and the coronal green line intensities.  相似文献

During several campaigns focused on prominences we have obtained coordinated spectral observations from the ground and from space. The SOHO/SUMER spectrometer allows us to observe, among others, the whole Lyman series of hydrogen, while the Hα line was observed by the MSDP spectrograph at the VTT. For the Lyman lines, non-LTE radiative-transfer computations have shown the importance of the optical thickness of the prominence – corona transition region (PCTR) and its relation to the magnetic field orientation for the explanation of the observed line profiles. Moreover, Heinzel, Anzer, and Gunár (2005, Astron. Astrophys. 442, 331) developed a 2D magnetostatic model of prominence fine structures that demonstrates how the shapes of Lyman lines vary, depending on the orientation of the magnetic field with respect to the line of sight. To support this result observationally, we focus here on a round-shaped filament observed during three days as it was crossing the limb. The Lyman profiles observed on the limb are different from day to day. We interpret these differences as being due to the change of orientation of the prominence axis (and therefore the magnetic field direction) with respect to the line of sight. The Lyman lines are more reversed if the line of sight is across the prominence axis as compared to the case when it is aligned along its axis.  相似文献

Observations of an eruptive prominence were obtained on 1 May 1996, with the SUMER and CDS instruments aboard SOHO during the preparatory phase of the Joint Observing Programme JOP12. A coronal mass ejection observed with LASCO is associated temporally and spatially with this prominence. The main objective of JOP12 is to study the dynamics of prominences and the prominence–corona interface. By analysing the spectra of Oiv and Siiv lines observed with SUMER and the spectra of 15 lines with CDS, Doppler shifts, temperatures and electron densities (ratio of Oiv 1401 to 1399Å) were derived in different structures of the prominence. The eruptive part of the prominence consists of a bubble (plasmoid) of material already at transition region temperatures with red shifts up to 100 km s-1 and an electron density of the order of 1010cm-3. The whole prominence was very active. It developed both a large helical loop and several smaller loops consisting of twisted threads or multiple ropes. These may be studied in the SUMER movie (movie 2). The profiles of the SUMER lines show a large dispersion of velocities (±50 km s-1) and the ratio of the Oiv lines indicates a large dispersion in electron density (3 x 109cm-3 to 3x 1011cm-3). The CME observed by LASCO left the corona some tens of minutes before the prominence erupted. This is evidence that the prominence eruptions are probably the result of the removal of the restraining coronal magnetic fields which are in part responsible for the original stability of the prominence.  相似文献

The north – south (N – S) asymmetry of solar activity is investigated by using the data on coronal green-line brightness and total number and total area of sunspots over the period of 1939  –  2001. Typical time variations of the N – S asymmetry are found to be consonant in these indices. Quasi-biennial oscillations (QBO) of solar activity are well recognizable in the N – S asymmetry of the examined indices. Moreover, the QBO are much better manifested in the N – S asymmetry of the individual indices than in the original (N plus S) indices. The time variations of relative QBO power are synchronous for the N – S asymmetry of various solar activity indices whereas such a synchronization is weaker for the indices themselves. It is revealed that the relative QBO power found in the N – S asymmetry of the studied indices has a negative correlation with the value of the N – S asymmetry itself. The findings indicate that the N – S asymmetry should be regarded as a fundamental phenomenon of solar activity similarly manifested in different activity indices. These findings should be taken into account when any dynamo theory of solar activity is constructed.  相似文献

A quiescent prominence was observed in June 1997 by instruments onboard the SOHO spacecraft: the Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation (SUMER), Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer (CDS) and Extreme-Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT), along with the coronagraph of the Wrocaw University Observatory at Bialków and the spectrograph of the Ondejov Observatory. We present prominence observations in higher lines of the hydrogen Lyman series (from L to L-9), together with some other UV lines obtained by SUMER. We extract the basic characteristics of the calibrated line profiles of these Lyman lines and compare them with the theoretical profiles computed from three kinds of NLTE models which also include prominence filamentation. Our principal result is that the current NLTE models are in principle capable of explaining the SUMER calibrated intensities in the observed Lyman lines. We also find that in order to fit all these lines, one has to consider a prominence-corona transition region (PCTR) with a temperature gradient. At low pressures, higher Lyman lines are still rather sensitive to the incident radiation which must be carefully taken into account in the modeling. From PCTR models, which also take into account the effect of ambipolar diffusion on the heating, we have derived the formation depths for the Lyman series lines. High Lyman lines seem to be formed just at the base of the PCTR.  相似文献

The RHESSI high-resolution spectrometer detected γ-ray lines and continuum emitted by the Earth's atmosphere during impact of solar energetic particles in the south polar region from 16:00–17:00 UT on 21 April 2002. The particle intensity at the time of the observation was a factor of 10–100 weaker than previous events when gamma-rays were detected by other instruments. This is the first high-resolution observation of atmospheric gamma-ray lines produced by solar energetic particles. De-excitation lines were resolved that, in part, come from 14N at 728, 1635, 2313, 3890, and 5106 keV, and the 12C spallation product at ∼ 4439 keV. Other unresolved lines were also detected. We provide best-fit line energies and widths and compare these with moderate resolution measurements by SMM of lines from an SEP event and with high-resolution measurements made by HEAO 3 of lines excited by cosmic rays. We use line ratios to estimate the spectrum of solar energetic particles that impacted the atmosphere. The 21 April spectrum was significantly harder than that measured by SMM during the 20 October 1989 shock event; it is comparable to that measured by Yohkoh on 15 July 2000. This is consistent with measurements of 10–50 MeV protons made in space at the time of the γ-ray observations.  相似文献

Solar prominences have been simultaneously observed in the integrated light of the He D3 and the Hβ emissions on two successive days, using the SST on La Palma with its tip-tilt mirror locked on a nearby white-light limb facular grain. The spatial and the temporal variation of the integrated line intensities and their ratio shows mainly two characteristics: (A) Constant emission ratio (even) in regions with substantial intensity variations and (B) varying emission ratio (often) tightly related to intensity structures of the prominence. (A) May be explained by a different number of superposing threads along the line of sight having very similar physical state. (B) Indicates threads with different intrinsic physical states; these may depend on the gas pressure or the inner structure of each thread, i.e., the “packing density,” affecting the penetration of ionizing EUV radiation, which affects the He i level populations and thus the rate of the triplet excitation.  相似文献

In this paper we compare simultaneous extreme ultraviolet (EUV) line intensity and microwave observations of a filament on the disk. The EUV line intensities were observed by the CDS and SUMER instruments on board SOHO and the radio data by the Very Large Array and the Nobeyama radioheliograph. The main results of this study are the following: (1) The Lyman continuum absorption is responsible for the lower intensity observed above the filament in the EUV lines formed in the transition region (TR) at short wavelengths. In the TR lines at long wavelengths the filament is not visible. This indicates that the proper emission of the TR at the filament top is negligible. (2) The lower intensity of coronal lines and at radio wave lengths is due to the lack of coronal emission: the radio data supply the height of the prominence, while EUV coronal lines supply the missing hot matter emission measure (EM). (3) Our observations support a prominence model of cool threads embedded in the hot coronal plasma, with a sheath-like TR around them. From the missing EM we deduce the TR thickness and from the neutral hydrogen column density, derived from the Lyman continuum and Hei absorption, we estimate the hydrogen density in the cool threads.  相似文献

The hydrogen and helium lines are the most prominent lines in the solar prominences spectra. Observations with the SUMER spectrometer onboard SOHO showed that there are weak lines in the blue wings of the Lyman series which affect their profiles. They were all identified as He ii lines in the Lyman series wings, except for the Lα line whose profile was affected by the use of an attenuator. The He ii lines are the even Balmer lines of the He ii system, a set of lines that we complete with the odd ones. We characterize them by comparison with the blue wings of the Lyman series in order to improve the H Lyman series observations and modeling, on one hand and to provide He ii lines observations for further combined H – He i – He ii modeling, on the other hand.  相似文献

Responses of the polar ionosphere to the Bastille Day solar event   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Simultaneous observations at Zhongshan Station, Antarctica, are presented for the interval of 13–17 July 2000 to show responses of the polar ionosphere to the Bastille Day (14 July 2000) solar event. The polar ionosphere was highly disturbed, as shown by frequently large deviations of the geomagnetic H-component, large riometer absorption events and strong ULF waves. Associated with the huge solar proton event produced by the X5/3B flare, a polar cap absorption (PCA) was observed. It began at ∼ 10:40 UT on 14 July and ended at ∼ 19:40 UT on 17 July. Superposed on it, there was a large absorption event with a peak of 26 dB, starting at ∼ 03:00 UT and ending at ∼ 11:10 UT on 15 July. This kind of absorption was probably produced by an intense `cloud of energetic electrons' during an auroral substorm. The ULF waves were very intense during the main phase and the recovery phase of the severe magnetic storm on 15 and 16 July. The ionospheric absorption was so strong that the digisonde signal was blacked out most of the time. The ionosphere returned to normal in the afternoon on 17 July.  相似文献

In this article we present the results of a study of the spatial distribution and asymmetry of solar active prominences (SAP) for the period 1996 through 2007 (solar cycle 23). For more meaningful statistical analysis we analyzed the distribution and asymmetry of SAP in two subdivisions viz. Group1 (ADF, APR, DSF, CRN, CAP) and Group2 (AFS, ASR, BSD, BSL, DSD, SPY, LPS). The North – South (N – S) latitudinal distribution shows that the SAP events are most prolific in the 21° to 30° slice in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres; the East – West (E – W) longitudinal distribution study shows that the SAP events are most prolific (best observable) in the 81° to 90° slice in the Eastern and Western Hemispheres. It was found that the SAP activity during this cycle is low compared to previous solar cycles. The present study indicates that during the rising phase of the cycle the number of SAP events are roughly equal in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. However, activity in the Southern Hemisphere has been dominant since 1999. Our statistical study shows that the N – S asymmetry is more significant then the E – W asymmetry.  相似文献

25 MHz–7.6 GHz global and detailed (fine structure – FS) radio spectra are presented, which were observed in the NOAA 9077 active region for the Bastille Day (14 July 2000) flare at 10:10–11:00 UT. Besides broadband radio bursts, high-resolution dynamic spectra reveal metric type II burst, decimetric type IV burst and various decimetric and microwave FSs, such as type III bursts, type U bursts, reverse-slope (RS)-drifting burst, fiber bursts, patch and drifting pulsation structure (DPS). The peak-flux-density spectrum of the radio bursts over the range 1.0–7.6 GHz globally appears as a U-shaped signature. Analyzing the features of backbone and herringbones of the type II burst, the speeds of shock and relevant energetic electron beams were estimated to be 1100 km s−1 and 58 500 km s−1, respectively. Also the time sequence of the radio emission is analyzed by comparing with the hard X-rays (HXRs) and the soft X-rays (SXRs) in this flare. After the maxima of the X-rays, the radio emission in the range 1.0–7.6 GHz reached maxima first at the higher frequency, then drifted to the lower frequency. This comparison suggested that the flare included three successive processes: firstly the X-rays rose and reached maxima at 10:10–10:23 UT, accompanied by fine structures only in the range 2.6–7.6 GHz; secondly the microwave radio emission reached maxima accompanied by many fine structures over the range 1.0–7.6 GHz at 10:23–10:34 UT; then a decimetric type IV burst and its associated FSs (fibers) in the range 1.0–2.0 GHz appeared after 10:40 UT.  相似文献

During the International Geophysical Year (IGY, 1957/1958) Dunsink Observatory near Dublin in Ireland was a World Data Centre for Solar Activity. In this circumstance, Hα Lyot Heliograph records secured on a daily basis between 07:00 – 14:00 UT at the Cape of Good Hope (then an integral link in a network of similar instruments contributing during the IGY to global monitoring of solar chromospheric activity) were routinely sent to Dunsink for analysis and dissemination. The investigations carried out at Dunsink on these data resulted, inter alia, in the discovery of the Flare Nimbus phenomenon. The nimbus comprises a dark expanding halo seen in the plage regions around major flares at, or within a few minutes of, the time of flare maximum intensity in Hα light. It reaches its greatest extent about 30 minutes after flare maximum. Its maximum dimensions (estimated visually) lie in the range 2 – 4×105 km and its duration ranges from ∼ 1 – 2 hours. Within the nimbus the striation pattern is either completely destroyed or loses its pre-flare configuration. An account of this phenomenon and its interpretation appeared primarily, although not exclusively, in the locally produced Dunsink Observatory Publications which are not now easily accessible to the world community of solar researchers. Also, at around the time when the nimbus was first identified and recorded in Lyot Heliograph data at several observatories, techniques in solar physics shifted towards high resolution narrow field observations. Under these conditions no further examples of the nimbus were recorded and the subject has remained dormant over several decades. The present paper again places the scientific results obtained with regard to the nimbus in the public domain, together with an account of the evolution within the scientific community of an explanation of this phenomenon. It is suggested here for the first time, in the light of present day data concerning coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and coronal dimming, that the nimbus provides a signature of CME-related reorganization of the magnetic field in the chromosphere (such that the transverse magnetic field component decreases and transforms into the line of sight component as the vector field stretches out). Coronal dimming provides a complementary signature of CME-related mass depletion in the corona.  相似文献

We explore the hard X-ray source distributions of an C1.1 flare occurred on 14 December 2007. Both Hinode/EIS and RHESSI observations are used. One of EIS rasters perfectly covers the double hard X-ray footpoints, where the EUV emission appears strong from the cool line of He ii (log T=4.7) to the hot line of Fe xvi (log T=6.4). We analyze RHESSI X-ray images at different energies and different times before the hard X-ray maximum. The results show a similar topology for the time-dependent source distribution (i.e. at 14:14:35 UT) as that for energy-dependent source distribution (i.e. at a given energy band of 6 – 9 keV) overlapped on EUV bright kernels, which seems to be consistent with the evaporation model.  相似文献

Solar observations in the mid-infrared 8 – 14 μm band continuum were carried out with cadence of 5 frames per second, in December 2007. Rapid small heated sources, with a typical duration of the order of seconds, were found on the bright plage-like areas around sunspots, in association with relatively weak GOES soft X-ray bursts. This work presents the analysis of fast mid-infrared flashes detected during a GOES B2.0-class event on 10 December 2007, beginning at about 10:40 UT. Rapid brightness temperature enhancements of 0.5 to 2.0 K were detected at the Earth by a microbolometer array, using a telescope with 10.5 cm diameter aperture producing a diffraction-limited photometric beam of 25 arc sec. The minimum detectable temperature change was of 0.1 K. The corresponding fluxes are 30 – 130 solar flux units. At the solar surface the estimated rapid brightenings represented a temperature enhancement of 50 – 150 K.  相似文献

The eruption of limb prominence on 21 April 2001 associated with two coronal mass ejections (CMEs) is investigated. Hα images reveal two large-scale eruptions (a prominence body and a southern foot-point arch), both showing helical internal structure. These two eruptions are found to be spatially and temporally associated with the corresponding CMEs. The kinematics and the study of geometrical parameters of the prominence show that the eruption was quite impulsive (with peak acceleration ≈470 m s−2) and has taken place for relatively low pitch angle of helical threads, not exceeding tan θ≈1.2. The stability criteria of the prominence are revisited in the light of the model of Vršnak (1990, Solar Phys. 129, 295) and the analysis shows that the eruption violates the instability criteria of that model. Finally, the energy stored in the prominence circuit and the energies (kinetic, potential, and magnetic) of the associated CMEs are estimated and it is found that there was enough energy stored in the prominence to drive the two CMEs. High-resolution Hα filtergrams (0.2″) obtained with the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope resolve numerous very thin, thread-like structures in solar filaments. The threads are believed to represent thin magnetic flux tubes that must be longer than the observable threads. We report on evidence for small-amplitude (1 – 2 km s−1) waves propagating along a number of threads with an average phase velocity of 12 km s−1 and a wavelength of 4″. The oscillatory period of individual threads vary from 3 to 9 minutes. Temporal variation of the Doppler velocities averaged over a small area containing a number of individual threads shows a short-period (3.6 minutes) wave pattern. These short-period oscillations could possibly represent fast modes in accordance with numerical fibril models proposed by Díaz et al. (Astron. Astrophys. 379, 1083, 2001). In some cases, it is clear that the propagating waves are moving in the same direction as the mass flows.  相似文献
