The interplanetary sector structure observed by the IMP-1 satellite during three solar rotations in 1963–4 is compared with the photospheric magnetic field structure observed with the solar magnetograph at Mt. Wilson Observatory. The interplanetary sector structure was most prominent on the sun in latitudes between 10 °N and 20 °N, although the average heliographic latitude of the satellite was 3 1/2 °S. A superposed-epoch analysis of the calcium plage structure obtained from the Fraunhofer Institute daily maps of the sun is used to discuss the relation between the structure of the plages and the interplanetary sector structure. A possible explanation for the observations is discussed in terms of a North-South asymmetry in the flow of the solar wind. It is suggested that these observations favor the equinoctial hypothesis as compared with the axial hypothesis for the explanation of the semi-annual maxima in geomagnetic activity.  相似文献

The morphology and physical characteristics of the extended solar wind transsonic region, an intrinsically unique regime of the heliosphere, are described. It is here where the primary acceleration of the solar wind occurs and both subsonic and supersonic plasma flows co-exist and interact. This concept of mixed flow has evolved from an analysis of interplanetary scintillation (IPS) data that reveal the solar wind stream structure and anomalous scattering within the solar wind transsonic region.  相似文献

The analysis of solar wind He++ and H+ ion distribution functions, collected over five months by the satellite Prognoz 1, shows that these are in general maxwellian but that often tails appear at higher speeds. The existing relation V-T, the observation of ratios of T/Tp 3.83 and V/Vp 1.035 give evidence of preferential He++ ion heating and acceleration. The criteria for heating by dissipation of hydromagnetic waves proposed by Barnes and Hung (1973) are tested experimentally. Finally, multifluid models are likely to predict certain observations such as dependence of the velocity ratio V/Vp on the solar wind flux.  相似文献

When solar wind plasma in the trailing (eastern) edge of a high-speed stream is mapped back to its estimated source in the high corona using the constant radial velocity (EQRH) approximation, a large range of velocities appears to come from a restricted range in longitude, often only a few degrees. This actually constitutes a sharp eastern coronal boundary for the solar wind stream source, and demands that the boundary have a three-dimensional structure. Using interplanetary data, we infer a systematic variation in source altitude (identified approximately with the Alfvén point), with faster solar wind attaining its interplanetary characteristics at lower altitudes. This also affects the accuracy of the source longitude estimates, so that we infer a width in the high corona of 4–6° for the source of the trailing edges of streams which appear to originate from a single longitude. We demonstrate that the possible systematic interplanetary effects (in at least some cases) are not large ( 2° in heliocentric longitude). The relatively sharp boundaries imply that high-speed streams are well-defined structures all the way down to their low coronal sources, and that the magnetic field structure controls the propagation of the plasma through the corona out to the vicinity of the Alfvén point ( 20 R ).  相似文献

I discuss the use of Very Long Baseline Interferometer (VLBI) phase scintillations to probe the conditions of plasma turbulence in the solar wind. Specific results from 5.0 and 8.4 GHz observations with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) are shown. There are several advantages of phase scintillation measurements. They are sensitive to fluctuations on scales of hundreds to thousands of kilometers, much larger than those probed by IPS intensity scintillations. In addition, with the frequency versatility of the VLBA one can measure turbulence from the outer corona 5–10R to well past the perihelion approach of the Helios spacecraft. This permits tests of the consistency of radio propagation and direct in-situ measurements of turbulence. Such a comparison is made in the present paper. Special attention is dedicated to measuring the dependence of the normalization coefficient of the density power spectrum,C N 2 on distance from the sun. Our results are consistent with the contention published several years ago by Aaron Roberts, that there is insufficient turbulence close to the sun to account for the heating and acceleration of the solar wind. In addition, an accurate determination of theC N 2 (R) relationship could aid the detection of transients in the solar wind.  相似文献

This paper presents an integrated analysis of GOES 6, 7 and neutron monitor observations of solar cosmic-ray event following the 1990 May 24 solar flare. We have used a model which includes particle injection at the Sun and at the interplanetary shock front and particle propagation through the interplanetary medium. The model does not attempt to simulate the physical processes of coronal transport and shock acceleration, therefore the injections at the Sun and at the shock are represented by source functions in the particle transport equation. By fitting anisotropy and angle-average intensity profiles of high-energy (>30 MeV) protons as derived from the model to the ones observed by neutron monitors and at GOES 6 and 7, we have determined the parameters of particle transport, the injection rate and spectrum at the source. We have made a direct fit of uncorrected GOES data with both primary and secondary proton channels taken into account. The 1990 May 24–26 energetic proton event had a double-peaked temporal structure at energies 100 MeV. The Moreton (shock) wave nearby the flare core was seen clearly before the first injection of accelerated particles into the interplanetary medium. Some (correlated with this shock) acceleration mechanism which operates in the solar corona at a height up to one solar radius is regarded as a source of the first (prompt) increase in GOES and neutron monitor counting rates. The proton injection spectrum during this increase is found to be hard (spectral index 1.6) at lower energies ( 30 MeV) with a rapid steepening above 300 MeV. Large values of the mean free path ( 1.8 AU for 1 GV protons in the vicinity of the Earth) led to a high anisotropy of arriving protons. The second (delayed) proton increase was presumably produced by acceleration/injection of particles by an interplanetary shock wave at height of 10 solar radii. Our analysis of the 1990 May 24–26 event is in favour of the general idea that a number of components of energetic particles may be produced while the flare process develops towards larger spatial/temporal scales.Visiting Associate from St. Petersburg State Technical University, St. Petersburg 195251, Russia.  相似文献

The propagation of non-radial, small amplitude perturbations superposed on a zero-order, stationary, non-magnetic, polytropic, rotating stellar wind is studied in the limit of the local theory, i.e. for k r 1, k being the module of the wave vector and r the characteristic scale of the zero-order flow. The resulting dispersion equation is of the 3rd order in (complex) frequency and the possible modes correspond to two acoustic type waves, and to a gravity-shear wave with strongly anisotropic propagation properties, due to coupling between the internal gravity waves and shear motion. The gravity-shear mode allows velocity differences in the medium to exist with no corresponding density fluctuations and hence with no shock wave formation. It is suggested that this mode corresponds to some of the fast-slow velocity streams observed in the interplanetary medium and may provide means for wave energy being transported outwards with the zero-order flow, with little dissipation in the inner region of the solar wind.  相似文献

We have carried out a program of continuous Interplanetary Scintillation (IPS) monitoring of the interplanetary activity using Ooty Radio Telescope (ORT). From May 1990 to March 1991, during the 22nd, solar maximum, a few radio sources were monitored to provide long stretches of IPS data with a high-time resolution of few minutes. These observations covered 0.3 to 0.8 AU region (12° to 70° elongations) around the sun at several heliographic latitudes. During the observation, we detected 33 short-time scale IPS events which had significant variation in the scintillation index and solar wind velocity. These were considered to be due to travelling interplanetary disturbances.A multi-component model of plasma density enhancement was developed to estimate the geometry and physical properties of these IPS events. Detailed analysis of 20 of these events suggests, 1. fast IPS events were interplanetary signatures of Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs), 2. the average mass and energy of these events was 1016 gm and 1033 erg respectively,3. 80% of IPS events were associated with X-ray flares on the sun and 50% were associated with geomagnetic activity at earth. Detailed study of the multicomponent model suggests IPS observations at smaller elongations (hence at higher radio frequencies) are more suited to detect fast-moving interplanetary disturbances such as produced by CMEs.  相似文献

We show that within distances from the Sun's surface less than the height of a streamer helmet, each of two neighboring rays of the streamer belt, as they approach the solar surface, bends around the helmet on either side of it. Also, a minimum angular diameter of the rays of d2°–3° remains virtually constant within R=1.2–6.0 R . A density inhomogeneity (`blob') can be produced above the helmet top visible to at least R6 R . In this case the initial velocity of the `blob' increases with solar distance from where it is generated to something like the velocity of the bulk solar wind with which the `blob' is carried away.  相似文献

We propose that the coronal source longitude and latitude of solar wind plasma can be estimated within 10°. Previous writers have argued that the solar wind in the ecliptic should originate near the equator and that a quasi-radial hypervelocity (QRH) approximation (constant radial flow) is valid beyond the magnetohydrodynamic critical points. We demonstrate that an extension of the QRH approximation (as if the solar wind flowed radially with constant velocity from the center of the Sun) yields a proper estimate of the high coronal source location at the release zone where the solar wind makes its transition to radial interplanetary flow. This extrapolated QRH (or EQRH) approximation succeeds because the two main corrections to this source estimate, coronal corotation and interplanetary acceleration, tend to cancel (the former correcting the source location eastward, the latter westward). Although this ideal spiral approximation was first suggested by Snyder and Neugebauer (1966), only recently has it been demonstrated that it relates a wide range of interplanetary plasma, magnetic field and energetic particle data to observed coronal magnetic structure. We estimate quantitatively the error in the EQRH approximation by comparison with steady-state streamlines predicted by azimuthally independent and dependent theoretical solutions to the steady-state plasma equations. We find the error in both cases 10° in longitude and therefore suggest that the EQRH approximation offers the means to relate observed solar initial conditions in the release zone directly to interplanetary measurements. If, in addition, the EQRH approximation also leads to agreement with low coronal structure, then there should be a straightforward correspondence to otherwise unobservable high coronal structure.  相似文献

We determine the momentum distribution of the relativistic particles near the Crab pulsar from the observed X- and -ray spectra (103109 eV), provided that the curvature radiation is responsible for it. The power law spectrum for the relativistic electrons,f() –5, reproduces a close fit to the observed high-energy photon spectrum. The theoretically determined upper limit to the momentum (due to radiation damping), M 8×106, corresponds to the upper cut-off energy of the -ray spectrum, 109 eV. The lower limit to the momentum, m 1.8×105, is chosen such that flattening of the X-ray spectrum below 10 keV is simulated. The number density of these electrons is found to be much higher than the Goldreich-Julian density. We also discuss pulse shape and polarization of high-energy photons. The extremely high density of particles and the steep momentum spectrum are difficult to understand. This may imply that another, more efficient, mechanism is in operation.  相似文献

Doppler dimming of the Ovi resonance lines (1032 Å, 1037 Å) in an expanding corona is calculated including the pumping effect on the Ovi 1037.61 Å of both Cii lines at 1036.34 Å and 1037.02 Å, and the effect of the width of the absorption profiles of the coronal oxygen ions along the incident radiation. The pumping effect of the Cii line at 1036.34 Å allows us to extend to approximately 450 km s–1 the measurement of solar wind velocities with the Ovi line ratio technique. Since the emissivity ratio of the Ovi doublet depends on the width of the oxygen coronal absorbing profiles, this ratio can provide an accurate measurement of the solar wind velocity in the case that the width of the absorbing profile along the direction of the incident radiation is independently determined. However, if on the one hand the ratio of the emissivities of the Ovi doublet has limitations in probing the wind velocity, on the other hand it can be used as a diagnostics for inferring the velocity distribution of the coronal Ovi ions along the radial, and detecting possible velocity anisotropies. This diagnostics, applied to recent observational results, allows us to infer that the velocity distribution of the oxygen ions is much broader in the direction perpendicular to the magnetic field direction, and that the acceleration of the fast solar wind in the first 2 solar radii is high.  相似文献

A spectroscopic investigation of a quiescent prominence has been performed: the line profiles of the H and K lines have been carefully determined in all regions of the prominence where these emissions are likely to originate in optically thin layers. Therefore we have been able to study the electron temperature T e and the microturbulent velocity in the outer parts of the prominence. We find that on the average, T e = 5700 K (Figure 1) and = 6.7 km s-1 (Figure 2) which are in very good agreement with classical data. Figure 3 represents the radial velocity measurements and Figure 4 the ratio of the total intensity of H to K lines. Thus the prominence we have observed does not show for T e and the regular increase outward which has been described by Hirayama (1971). On the other hand increases towards the Equator, in the dynamically active part of the prominence, which could indicate that represents the effect of macroturbulence rather than microturbulence (Kawaguchi, 1966). In this part of the prominence only the K line is in emission and the average value of the microturbulence is 9.4 km s-1, the radial velocity is also generally increasing. At last, according to the absolute intensities of the H and K lines, the electron density in the outer layers of the prominence is no more than 1 × 1010 cm-3.  相似文献

We report here on high angular resolution observations of solar noise storm sources at a frequency of 75 MHz. The data for the study were obtained at the Gauribidanur Radio Observatory (long.: 77°2612 E, lat.: 13°3612 N) about 100 km north of Bangalore, India, during the solar eclipse of 24 October 1995. Our main conclusion is that there are structures of angular size 2.5 arc min in the outer solar corona.  相似文献

A study of the properties of the cosmic radiation of energy - 10 MeV generated by solar flares is reported. Data from four Pioneer spacecraft in interplanetary orbits, and separated by 180° in heliocentric longitude are employed. Attention is restricted to the properties evident at times in excess of 1 day after the occurrence of the parent flare. The anisotropic character of the radiation; the gradients in heliocentric longitude; the decay time constants; and the energy spectra of the radiation are all studied in detail. It is found that the equilibrium anisotropy assumes a direction - 45° E of the satellite-Sun line at very late times. It is suggested that the anisotropy at such times is parallel to E × B. This observation confirms that convection is the determining process in the escape of the solar cosmic rays from the solar system. It indicates that a positive radial gradient of solar cosmic radiation density has builtup at orbit of Earth some 4 days after a flare. This results in an effective convective velocity of approximately 1/2 the solar wind velocity. Direct measurements indicate the presence of strong gradients in heliocentric longitude even at very late times ( 4 days). These gradients are essentially invariant with respect to time, e-folding angles of n - 30° have been observed at - 10 MeV. The presence of these gradients has a major effect on the temporal variation of the cosmic ray flux during the decay phase of the flare effect. Thus, the observed decay time constant is either increased or decreased relative to the convective value depending on the position of the observer relative to the centroid of the cosmic ray population injected by the flare. The effect of the gradient becomes more pronounced at lower energies, and may even exceed the convective removal rate. The observed decay time constant, the characteristics of the anisotropy, and the gradient in longitude are shown to be inter-related as demanded by theory. It is shown that the exponent of the cosmic ray spectrum is dependent on the location of the observer relative to the centroid of the cosmic ray population injected by the parent flare. At a given point in the frame of reference of the cosmic ray population, the spectral exponent is invariant with time. Now at CSIRO, G.P.O. On board the SOHO spacecraft poised at L1 Lagrange point, the SWAN instrument is mainly devoted to the measurement of large scale structures of the solar wind, and in particular the distribution with heliographic latitude of the solar wind mass flux. This is obtained from an intensity map of the sky Lyman emission, which reflects the shape of the ionization cavity carved in the flow of interstellar H atoms by the solar wind. The methodology, inversion procedure and related complications are described. The subject of latitude variation of the solar wind is shortly reviewed: earlier Lyman results from Prognoz in 1976 are confirmed by Ulysses. The importance of the actual value of the solar wind mass flux for the equation of dynamics in a polar coronal hole is stressed. The instrument is composed of one electronic unit commanding two identical Sensor Units, each of them allowing to map a full hemisphere with a resolution of 1°, thanks to a two-mirrors periscope system. The design is described in some details, and the rationale for choice between several variants are discussed. A hydrogen absorption cell is used to measure the shape of the interplanetary Lyman line and other Lyman emissions. Other types of observations are also discussed : the geocorona, comets (old and new), the solar corona, and a possible signature of the heliopause. The connexion with some other SOHO instruments, in particular LASCO, UVCS, SUMER, is briefly discussed.  相似文献

It is shown that major geomagnetic storms (¦Dst¦ > 100) tend to develop at about the time of the passage of the solar current sheet or disk at the location of the Earth, provided this passage is associated with (1) a large impulsive increase of the IMF magnitude B, (2) a negative value of the IMF angle (Theta), and (3) an increasing solar wind speed. The passage occurs in association with the 27-day rotation of the warped current disk or a temporal up-down movement of the latter. The period in which ¦Dst¦/t< 0 during major storms coincides approximately with the period when the solar windmagnetosphere energy coupling function becomes 1019 erg s–1. These conclusions do not depend on the phase of the sunspot cycle. These results may be interpreted as follows: A high speed solar wind flow, originating either from flare regions or coronal holes, tends to push the solar current disk to move upward or downward for either a brief period (1 3 days) or an extended period (2 weeks). A relatively thin region of a large IMF B > 10 is often present near the moving current disk. Waves are also generated on the moving current disk, and some of them cause large changes of . A high value of is found in the region of a large IMF B near the wavy solar current disk, where has a large negative value.  相似文献

The HUS-Ulysses team has prepared an instrument aboard the ULYSSES spacecraft consisting of 2 CsI detectors and 2 Si surface barrier detectors for measuring X-rays in the range 5–200 keV up to 8 ms resolution. The prime objectives are the study of solar flares and of cosmic gamma-ray bursts. The ULYSSES mission will leave the ecliptic during the next solar cycle. The solar data can be used in conjunction with other experiments to measure the directivity of the emission and for correlative studies. The cosmic gamma-ray burst data will improve source localizations, allowing sensitive searches for counterparts. The energy range and the 4 field of view is well suited to the detection of the soft gamma-ray repeaters.Paper presented at the 11th European Regional Astronomical Meetings of the IAU on New Windows to the Universe, held 3–8 July, 1989, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain  相似文献

Recent calculations of electron and proton impact excitation rates in Nevii are used to calculate theoretical emission line ratios involving both n=0 (2–2) and n=1 (2–3) transitions in the 97–895 Å wavelength range. A comparison of these with existing solar observations, obtained by instruments on rocket flights and on the Skylab mission, reveals generally good agreement between theory and observation. This provides experimental support for the accuracy of the atomic data adopted in the line ratio calculations, and implies that the latter may be applied with confidence to the analysis of solar and stellar spectra from current and future satellite missions.  相似文献

The probable connection between cosmic rays and the electromagnetic state of the interplanetary medium was recognized by Hannes Alfvén as early as 1949 (Alfvén, 1949, 1950); he pointed out that the properties of cosmic rays necessitate a mechanism, external to Earth but within the solar system, capable of accelerating particles to extremely high energies. In advocating the view of local origin for part of the cosmic-ray spectrum, Alfvén and his colleagues developed a very general type of acceleration mechanism called magnetic pumping. The unique data set of the two Voyagers extends over an entire decade (1977–1987) and is most suitable to explore the problem of acceleration of charged particles in the heliosphere. The energy coverage of the Low Energy Charged Particle (LECP) experiment covers the range 30 keV to several hundred MeV for ions and 22 keV to several MeV for electrons. Selected observations of interplanetary acceleration events from 1 to 25 AU are presented and reviewed. These show frequent acceleration of ions to several tens of MeV in association with shocks; highest energies (220 MeV oxygen) were measured in the near-perpendicular ( Bn 87.5°) shock of January 5, 1978 at 1.9 AU, where electron acceleration was also observed. Examples of ion acceleration in association with corotating interaction regions are presented and discussed. It is shown that shock structures have profound effects on high-energy (70 MeV) cosmic rays, especially during solar minimum, when a negative latitudinal gradient was observed after early 1985 at all energies from 70 MeV down to 30 keV. By early 1987, most shock acceleration activity in the outer heliosphere (25 to 30 AU) had ceased both in the ecliptic (Voyager-2) and at higher (30°) ecliptic latitudes (Voyager-1). The totality of observations demonstrate that local acceleration to a few hundred MeV, and as high as a few GeV is continually present throughout the heliosphere. It should be noted that in 1954 when Alfvén suggested local acceleration and containment of cosmic rays within the solar system, no one treated his suggestion seriously, at any energy. The observations reviewed in this paper illustrate once more Alfvén's remarkable prescience and demonstrate how unwise it is to dismiss his ideas.Paper dedicated to Professor Hannes Alfvén on the occasion of his 80th birthday, 30 May 1988.  相似文献
