Summary. This paper describes the magnetic remanence and susceptibility anisotropy of 42 samples of laminated clay from Peak Cavern. The sediments are shown to have acquired a stable remanent magnetization due to the depositional alignment of magnetite grains. The magnetic fabric data confirm the existence of alteration within a reddened surface layer. A record of geomagnetic secular variation in the underlying clay is compared to a dated lake sediment magnetostratigraphy to suggest that deposition occurred around 7000 yr bp . A method for estimating water current directions based on the remanence and magnetic fabric data is critically assessed before deducing the sense of palaeoflow in the cave.  相似文献

Stable isotope measures in organic matter are frequently used as indicators of past climate change. Although such analyses can provide valuable information, there is considerable uncertainty associated with studies of organic-rich sediments, especially those from Arctic lakes and bogs. We studied stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen, and magnetic properties in a sediment core from a small alkaline lake with a high sedimentation rate, Lake Nattmålsvatn, Norway. There is good correspondence among the different sediment variables during the late glacial, and they seemingly reflect major climate variations such as the Allerød Interstade and the Younger Dryas, as well as the transition into the current interglacial. During the early Holocene, however, these relationships are more complex and δ13C and δ15N values do not stabilize until ~7,500 cal year BP. A significant excursion in all variables occurs between 6,850 and 6,500 cal year BP and is interpreted to represent climate deterioration. Holocene δ13C values vary little and indicate that isotopically-depleted dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in the lake, possibly influenced by methanotrophy and high pCO2, dominated the lake’s carbon cycle. Holocene δ15N is similarly muted, likely due to the availability of abundant dissolved nitrogen. Bulk organic matter is probably dominated by phytoplankton remains produced beneath the ice cover in late spring and during ice breakup when isotopically-depleted DIC, pCO2 and ammonium availability were maximal. Thus, use of δ13C and δ15N as indicators of Holocene paleoclimate and paleoproductivity variation can be challenging in a lake such as Nattmålsvatn, where ice cover isolates the basin for large parts of the year, allowing dissolved respiratory gases to accumulate in the water column. In contrast, magnetic variables appear to better track climate variations. In particular, runoff-driven influx of minerogenic sediments shows high variability that can be attributed to regional changes in Holocene winter precipitation. The most striking shifts occur between 4,000 and 2,300 cal year BP.  相似文献

Summary. Palaeomagnetic and K–Ar whole rock age studies are reported from samples of the Camaraca Formation exposed near Arica (18.6° S, 70.3° W), Chile. The Camaraca Formation is composed of andesites and interbedded marine shales which yield a fauna placing the formation in the Bajocian–Callovian stages of the Jurassic. Our sampling sites span a strati-graphic thickness of 2 km and yield a reversal stratigraphy of: N–R–N. The K–Ar isochron method, applied to least altered samples from the formation, gives a sharply defined age of 157 Myr which is in agreement with the palaeontologically assigned age of the formation. Normal and reversed directions of remanent magnetization, isolated by of and thermal de-magnetization methods, are statistically antiparallel. The pole position, computed from these directions of magnetization, is at 010° E, 70%0 S ( A 95= 6.0°). This pole position, when compared with the well-studied Chon Alice Formation of Argentina, suggests that the sampling region has under-gone a 28°± 28° counter-clockwise rotation about a local vertical axis. The large uncertainty (between 0° and 56°) in this estimate is due to the large scatter in the South American reference data. When compared with African Jurassic palaeopoles, with allowance made for the opening of the South Atlantic, a counter-clockwise rotation of 44°± 14° is indicated.  相似文献

About six separately orientated cores were collected at each of 14 sites distributed throughout the arcuate, west-dipping, 6  km thick, Freetown layered igneous complex. Alternating field and thermal demagnetization both isolate a stable component of remanent magnetism which corresponds to a palaeomagnetic south pole from 13 sites (nine reverse, four normal polarity) at 82.9°S, +32.7°E ( α 95 = 5.6°). This is indistinguishable from that reported in 1971 based on alternating field demagnetization of cores from 10 orientated hand samples.
  The difference between the Freetown pole (age: 193 ± 3  Ma) and other mid-Jurassic poles from West Africa could be due to its greater age. The difference between the whole West African Jurassic pole group and the Karoo pole from southern Africa, however, suggests moderate (∼10°) differential rotation of West Africa relative to the Kaapvaal craton.
  A prevalent magnetic foliation fabric coincides generally with the petrological layering, as might be expected, but a ubiquitous magnetic lineation is predominantly down-dip. This is compatible with a down-dip pyroxene lineation reported to be present in some field outcrops, and interpreted in terms of late-stage deformation during the slow crystallization and cooling of the large igneous body. However, a fold test shows that the igneous layering had already achieved its present attitude before the Complex cooled to ∼570 °C (the maximum blocking temperature of the characteristic remanence).  相似文献

The results of a series of magnetic measurements on sediment samples are illustrated by means of examples selected from a more specialized parallel publication (Hu & Oldfield, submitted). They are interpreted in terms of magnetic components, notably, 'magnetite' of varying grain size/domain state, haematite, goethite and greigite. Wherever possible, some indication is given of changes in the relative importance of the various magnetic grain size and mineral phases through time. The main components of the magnetic assemblage are described for each of the main lithological units identified in the long core which is considered elsewhere in this volume. These assemblages are related to source areas and to depositional processes, especially in the pre-Holocene parts of the core. In the Holocene sediments, the magnetic properties cannot be interpreted solely in terms of shifts in detrital mineral sources. Evidence is presented for the presence of both biogenic magnetite and authigenic greigite. The most recent sediments point to renewed catchment erosion, probably as a result of human activity during historical times.  相似文献

Summary. Three principal directions of magnetization are recognized in the central part of the Lewisian metamorphic terrain of north-west Scotland. The first ('A') magnetization is a high blocking temperature component residing in magnetite and imposed during post-Laxfordian uplift and cooling. Fifty sites yield an overall mean D = 285.9°, I = 54.9° and palaeomagnetic pole at 273.2° E, 37.6° N ( dp = 3.7°, dm = 5.2°); this magnetization was probably acquired at crustal depths of 6–10 km and is linked to K—Ar uplift ages averaging 1650–1625 Ma. The second ('B') magnetizations are defined by E—W directions and also reside in high blocking temperature components; they are, however, dipolar, have some properties distinct from the 'A' magnetizations, and are correlated with late stages in the history of the complex at 1400–1200 Ma. The third ('C') NE directed magnetizations reside predominantly in low blocking temperature components in pyrrhotite and possibly maghemite, and were probably acquired at a late stage of the regional uplift; they do not correlate with post-1450 Ma magnetizations from the Laurentian Shield and probably relate to the as yet undefined interval 1600–1450 Ma. The collective palaeomagnetic data and certain geologic data suggest that the Lewisian foreland should be rotated by 30° clockwise about a local axis of rotation on the conventional reconstruction of the North Atlantic continents; this rotation is associated with Lower Palaeozoic trans-current movements and may be related to a fourth ('D') magnetization of viscous origin.
A collective assessment of 1850–1600 Ma palaeomagnetic data for the Laurentian Shield defines a large apw loop; there is widespread agreement between data from the constituent structural provinces of the Shield although different metamorphic regions define complementary segments of the loop related to uplift over different intervals of time.  相似文献

The palaeomagnetism of the Tertiary igneous complex of Ardnamurchan   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Summary. Samples have been taken systematically through the intrusive sequence for the three centres which form the Tertiary central intrusive ring complex. Palaeomagnetic measurements show that all the units are reversely magnetized as are the earlier lavas – an extension of those of Mull and Morvern – which they intrude. This is in contrast to Mull, Skye and Arran, where the igneous sequences have been shown to span at least three polarity intervals, but is similar to Rhum where the only normal units are a few late dykes. Since Rhum and Ardnamuchan both lie on the dyke swarm which passes through Muck, the two complexes are considered to be closely related. If the Ardnamurchan central complex was formed in a single reversed interval the total duration of igneous activity was less than 3 Myr.  相似文献

Low-field magnetic susceptibility and its anisotropy (AMS) were measured for a suite of sandstone and siltstone samples. AMS orientations measured on two systems (Bartington and Digico) differed before thermal treatment of the samples but became the same after thermal demagnetization in air to 600 °C. Six position measurement schemes for the Bartington system do not eliminate the effects of specimen inhomogeneity and other errors, whereas 12- and 24-position measurements give good agreement with the Digico anisotropy meter and with the observed petrofabric. Thermal demagnetization from temperatures between 400 and 650 °C had the effect of enhancing both the magnetic susceptibility and AMS. Although the most profound mineralogical change due to heating was the conversion of kaolinite into metakaolin, IRM, XRD, DTA and Mössbauer spectroscopic analysis demonstrate that the changes in magnetic properties were due to the transformation upon heating of trace amounts of sulphides into magnetite and/or maghemite and haematite. Both magnetic susceptibility and the degree of anisotropy decrease with higher-temperature thermal demagnetization due to the oxidation of the newly formed magnetite and/or maghemite into haematite. The magnetic foliation of the newly formed magnetite/maghemite and haematite is parallel to the bedding, possibly following the orientation of the original sulphides.  相似文献

207Pb/206Pb single-grain zircon, 40Ar/39Ar single-grain hornblende and biotite, and 40Ar/39Ar bulk-sample muscovite and biotite ages from the Nelshoogte trondhjemite pluton located in eastern Transvaal, South Africa, show that this granitoid had a protracted thermal history spanning 3213±4  Ma to about 3000  Ma. Whole-rock 40Ar/39Ar ages from cross-cutting dolerite dykes indicate that these were intruded at about 1900  Ma. There is no evidence of this or other, later events significantly affecting the argon systematics of the minerals from the pluton dated by the 40Ar/39Ar method.
  The pluton has a well-defined palaeomagnetic pole which is dated at 3179±18 (2 σ ) Ma by 40Ar/39Ar dating of hornblende. This pole (18°N, 310°E, A 95=9°) yields a palaeolatitude of 0°, significantly different from other Archaean poles from the Kaapvaal Craton. The palaeolatitude difference implies that there was significant apparent polar wander during the Archaean. A second, overprinting magnetization seen in the pluton is also seen in the lower-Proterozoic dolerite dykes, and is consistent with other lower-Proterozoic (2150–1950  Ma) poles for southern Africa.  相似文献

The magnetic properties of recent sediments from five short cores from Brothers Water in the English Lake District are compared with those from a set of catchment soil samples. From the comparison, it is concluded that bacterial magnetosomes have made a significant contribution to the magnetic properties of the sediments of the last five decades. This contribution is superimposed on a continuing erosive input of haematite-rich sediment from the parent materials of the catchment and may obscure any possible increase in surface soil input during recent times. The results highlight the difficulty of making sediment-source linkages where biogenic contributions to the magnetic properties of the sediment are important relative to the input of magnetic minerals from catchment erosion.  相似文献

Abstract Basal ice samples were collected from ice exposures in a natural subglacial cavity beneath an outlet glacier of Øksfjordjøkelen, North Norway. Sediment and cation (Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+) concentrations were then determined, and indicate stacking of basal ice units producing a repeat pattern of ‘clean firnification ice’ overlying sediment‐rich ice. All measured cations show correlation with sediment concentration indicating weathering reactions to be the dominant contributor of cations. Regressions of specific sediment surface area per unit volume with cation concentration are performed and used to predict cation concentrations. These predicted values provide an indication of cation relocation within the basal ice sequence. The results suggest limited melting and refreezing resulting in the relocation of predominantly monovalent cations downward through the profile. Exchange of cations into solution during the melting of sediment‐rich ice samples has previously been suggested as a source of error in such investigations. Analyses of sediment‐free regelation ice spicules formed at the bed show cation concentrations above firnification ice levels and comparable, in many instances, to the basal ice samples.  相似文献
