We consider the possibility that carbon, in the form of the allotrope carbyne, might form in the atmosphere of the white dwarf in a cataclysmic variable system, and be expelled from the system by radiation pressure. It seems that, under some circumstances, cataclysmic variable systems may indeed have carbon dust in their vicinity.Paper presented at the IAU Colloquium No. 93 on Cataclysmic Variables. With the recent detection of direct white dwarf photospheric radiation from certain cataclysmic variables in quiescent (low accretion) states, important implications and clues about the nature and long-term evolution of cataclysmic variables can emerge from an analysis of their physical properties. Detection of the underlying white dwarfs has led to a preliminary empirical CV white dwarf temperature distribution function and, in a few cases, the first detailed look at a freshly accreted white dwarf photosphere. The effective temperatures of CV white dwarfs plotted versus orbital period for each type of CV appears to reveal a tendency for the cooler white dwarf primaries to resisde in the shorter period systems. Possible implications are briefly discussed.Paper presented at the IAU Colloquium No. 93 on Cataclysmic Variables. In this paper we present recent results from a continuing investigation of cataclysmic variables in the 500 to 1700 A region with the Voyager ultraviolet spectrometers. Observations of outbursts show a substantial delay (0.5 day) in the rise to maximum in the FUV (912–1200 ) with respect to optical wavelengths. Both FUV and optical light decline simultaneously. Flux distributions show a significant flattening in the FUV and with the possible exception of CPD-48 1577 no EUV flux has been observed in any catalclysmic variable. CPD-48 1577 shows a maxginal, 2 , EUV flux.Paper presented at the IAU Colloquium No. 93 on Cataclysmic Variables. Euler solutions in the problem of the translatory-rotary motion of three rigid bodies
The present paper is a continuation of the article (Vidyakin, 1976) in which we proved the existence of Lagrange (triangle) solutions in the general problem of the translatory-rotary motion of three absolutely rigid bodies. In particular, we have found the conditions for the existence of Lagrange solutions in the case when all the bodies possess a symmetry with respect to three mutually perpendicular planes both in respect to the distribution of matter and in respect to the outward form. In this case the bodies effect simple translations along with the centres of the masses without rotation (in Lyapunov's system of coordinates). If the rigid bodies possess a symmetry in respect to the axis and to the plane, perpendicular to this axis, then the Lagrange solutions of the three floats (Duboshin, 1973), three spokes (Kondurar, 1974), three shafts (Vidyakin, 1976) types are admitted, as well as the solutions in the cases of combinations of the float, spoke and shaft-bodies (Vidyakin, 1976).Those solutions exist of certain conditions, imposed on the structure, orientation and rotation of the bodies, are observed. In the general case (there) exist particular solutions which we have termed as Near-Lagrangian.The present paper is to prove the existence of Euler (rectilinear) solutions in the problem of the translatory-rotary motion of three rigid bodies, assuming that the elementary particles of the rigid bodies are mutually attracted according to the Newtonian law.In particular, we have found the conditions for the existence of Euler solutions in the case when all the bodies possess a symmetry in respect to three mutually perpendicular planes both in respect to the distribution of matter and in respect to the outward form. In this case the bodies are so disposed in the uniformly rotating coordinate system that two symmetry planes concur while the centres of the masses are disposed on one straight line.In particular, if the bodies possess a symmetry in respect to the axis and to the plane perpendicular to this axis, then the Euler solutions of the three floats (Duboshin, 1973), three spokes, three shafts types as well as solutions in the cases of combinations of float-, spoke- and shaft-bodies and spheres, either homogeneous or possessing a spherically symmetric distribution of densities, are admitted. The paper gives exact solutions for the cases when the attraction force function of the bodies has an approximate expression.

The potential of a body of revolution is expanded in a series of spherical functions. It is proved that, for a body with analytical density limited by an analytical surface the coefficients of expansion decrease in geometrical progression.

We present the first results of a study which will attempt to analyze the combined Voyager and IUE observations of cataclysmic variables using steady-state accretion disk models. Initially we use flux ratio diagrams to determine if a combination of models will suffice or if new ingredients are necessary.Paper presented at the IAU Colloquium No. 93 on Cataclysmic Variables. This contribution deals with the properties of small-scale magnetic elements at the polar caps of the Sun. Spectro-polarimetric observations, obtained with high spatial resolution with the Gregory Coudé Telescope at the Observatorio del Teide on Tenerife, were analysed. We find, though with limited data sets, that polar faculae differ in two aspects from faculae of the network in non-active regions near the equator (equatorial faculae): (1) Polar faculae appear to have the same magnetic polarity as the general polar magnetic field. Presumably, the latter is rooted in the small-scale faculae. The equatorial faculae show both magnetic polarities. (2) Polar faculae, with a size of 3.5 ± 1.3, are larger than equatorial faculae with 2.1 ± 0.4. Yet as for equatorial faculae, polar faculae possess kilogauss magnetic fields.  相似文献

Results of an analytical discussion of observational selection in a magnitude-limited sample of cataclysmic binaries (CBs) are presented. It is shown that the dependence of the strength of selection in favour of massive white dwarfs, of the mean orbital inclination and the fraction of eclipsing systems in a sample on the limiting magitude m reflects the large-scale distribution of CBs in the galaxy and the influence of interstellar absorption. Furthermore it is shown how selection in favour of massive white dwarfs depends on the mass radius relation of white dwarfs.Paper presented at the IAU Colloquium No. 93 on Cataclysmic Variables. EXOSAT observations of a large sample of non-magnetic cataclysmic variables have led to the detection of VW Hyi and OY Car as strong soft X-ray sources during superoutburst. The spectral characteristics of the X-ray emission of these SU Uma systems are compared. It is proposed that both systems have, besides a cool, optically thick boundary layer, an extended hot, optically thin corona.Paper presented at the IAU Colloquium No. 93 on Cataclysmic Variables. A limiting case of the problem of three bodies (m 0,m 1,m 2) is considered. The distance between the bodiesm 0 andm 1 is assumed to be much less than that between their barycenter and the bodym 2 so that one may use Hill's approximation for the potential of interaction between the bodiesm 1 andm 2. In the absence of resonant relations the potential, double-averaged by the mean longitudes ofm 1 andm 2, describes the secular evolution of the orbits in the first approximation of the perturbation theory. As Harrington has shown, this problem is integrable. In the present paper a qualitative investigation of the evolution of the orbits and comparison with the analogous case in the restricted problem are carried out.The set of initial data is found, for which a collision between the bodiesm 0 andm 1 takes place. The region of the parameters of the problem is determined, for which plane retrograde motion is unstable. In a special example the results of approximate analysis are compared with those of numerical integration of the exact equations of the three body problem.

Some recent photometric and spectroscopic results for this ultrashort period system are summarized, and several straightforward consequences of these results for our understanding of the evolution of cataclysmic binaries are pointed out: The space motion of Z Cha is characteristic of the old disk population. The white dwarf cannot be composed primarily of He, unless it grew by accretion by at least 20%. The inferred masses of the component stars, combined with the usual gravitational quadrupole formula, probably do not suffice to explain the inferred rate of mass transfer, even in quiescence. The secondary star does not lie on the computed evolutionary tracks in the period-mass diagram of Paczynski and Sienkiewicz.Paper presented at the IAU Colloquium No. 93 on Cataclysmic Variables. Spectra of accretion disks in dwarf novae and some novalike stars have been computed. Many simplifications to the general model of the nature of a cataclysmic variable are needed to make the system numerically tractable. The necessity, justification, and implications of such simplifications are discussed together with the influences of some system parameters on the disk radiation.Paper presented at the IAU Colloquium No. 93 on Cataclysmic Variables. We present the ninth list of blue stellar objects of the second part of the First Byurakan Spectral Sky Survey (FBS). We publish 61 objects in the zone +69+73, 3 h 50m18 h 10 m and 23 additional objects from the previous 5 zones of the survey. Of the 84 objects, 64 are discovered for the first time. We give the equatorial coordinates, stellar V magnitudes, color indices, and preliminary classes of the objects with respect to slitless low-dispersion spectra. For the 23 objects we give approximate types, among which there are 5 candidates for quasars, one for a Seyfert galaxy, 3 UV-excess galaxies, 9 white dwarfs, 4 cataclysmic variables and one probable planetary nebula.Translated fromAstrofizika, Vol. 37, No. 3, 1994.The authors are grateful to the American Astronomical Society for support of the present paper.  相似文献

Certain cataclysmic variables may evolve into low mass X-ray binaries if the white dwarfs can steadily accrete sufficient mass to exceed the Chandrasekhar limit. We present spectra of a recurrent nova and a low mass X-ray binary which are very similar to each other, and are also unusual for the strengths of the observed He II emission. We suggest that this similarity is not coincidental, but is evidence for an evolutionary link between the two classes of objects. A hydrogen depletion in the accreting gas is implied from the emission line fluxes, and may be an important parameter in determining whether accreted gas remains bound to the white dwarf, enabling eventual core collapse to occur.Paper presented at the IAU Colloquium No. 93 on Cataclysmic Variables. It is found that the relationship between the potential energy and the moment of the inertia independent of the radial mass distribution obtained earlier for the sphere also holds in the case of the ellipsoidal mass distribution for the ellipsoid of rotation. The possibility of application of the energy virial relations for solution of the evolutionary problems of the gravitating gaseous sphere, with the help of the relationship found earlier, is demonstrated. The physical conditions on the gaseous sphere boundary are introduced. The existence of two branches of evolution, the proton one and the electron one, is established. The problem of the gravitational contraction velocity during sphere evolution is solved. The relationship between the boundary temperature and the gaseous sphere radius as well as between the luminosity and the body mass is obtained. Some limiting relations for the final stage of the gaseous sphere evolution are found.

In the previously published Parts I and II of the paper, the author has constructed a formal long-periodic solution for the case of 11 resonance in the restricted problem of three bodies to 0(m 3/2), wherem is the small mass parameter of the system. The time-dependencet(, ,m), where is the mean synodic longitude and is related to the Jacobi constant, has been expressed by ahyperelliptic integral. It is shown here that with the approximationm=0 in the integrand, the functiont(, , 0) can be expanded in a series involving standardelliptic functions. Then the problem of inversion can be formally solved, yielding the function (t, , 0).Similarly, the normalized period (,m) of the motion can be approximated by theHagihara hyperelliptic integral (, 0), corresponding tom=0. This integral is also expanded into elliptic functions. Asymptotic forms for (, 0) are derived for 0 and for 1, corresponding to the extreme members of thetadpole branch of the family of orbits.  相似文献

As evidenced by the P Cygni profiles of their ultraviolet resonance lines, cataclysmic variables—like early-type stars—are known to have extensive, high velocity winds. Assisted by AAVSO visual data andIUE ultraviolet spectra, we present an observational and theoretical study of the P Cygni profiles of the dwarf nova HL CMa. As these profiles are dependent upon the ionization structure of the wind, we describe a model of a radiatively-driven shocked wind for cataclysmic variables, and present results for the temperature and ionization structure of the outflowing gas.Paper presented at the IAU Colloquium No. 93 on Cataclysmic Variables. This paper is a continuation and a generalization of one published earlier (Duboshin, 1969): it discusses the problem whether there exist the Lagrangian and the Eulerian solutions of the generalized three-body (material points) problem. Every point in this generalized problem acts on another, one with a force (attractive or repulsive) directed along the straight line passing through these points, and in an arbitrary manner depending on time, mutual distance and its derivatives, the first and the second. Here, generally speaking, the third axiom of dynamics (law of action and reaction) is not presupposed as fulfilled, that is, it is supposed that every two material points interact in a different way. This most general assumption being made, we establish the conditions which must dictate the laws of the interactions, so that the three points can always remain at the apexes of the equilateral triangle (Langrangian solution), or remain always on a straight line (Eulerian solution). The author believes that such general treatment of the three-body problem can be useful for theoretical studies in celestial mechanics and also for practical applications in the study of isolated stellar systems.
