Six solar flares were detected by the AVS-F apparatus onboard the CORONAS-F satellite in January 2005. We discuss the temporal profiles and energy spectra of the solar flares of January 20, 17, and 15, 2005 (class X7.1, X3.8, and X2.6, respectively) on the AVS-F data. The active region NOAA 10720 was the source of these flares. The spectra of the flares of January 17 and 20, 2005 contain nuclear lines, a positron line, and a line due to neutron capture line, while only the positron and neutron capture lines can be identified in the spectrum of the flare of January 15, 2005. The spectral features corresponding to these lines were observed during the whole duration of the flares. Analysis of the temporal profile of the flare of January 20, 2005 with a 1-ms temporal resolution in the energy range 0.1–20 MeV reveals the presence of a thin structure (at the 99% confidence level) with typical timescales of 7 to 35 ms.  相似文献

The results of measuring UV radiation onboard the CORONAS-F spacecraft during solar flares in 2001–2003 are considered. Some conclusions from the analysis of variations of solar-flare emission in several spectral intervals, namely, in soft X-rays, in the 10-to 130-nm range, and in the band near 120 nm, are discussed. The data were obtained by the VUSS-L and SUFR instruments. Time and energy characteristics of flares recorded onboard the CORONAS-F spacecraft are compared to the GOES measurements in the interval 0.1–0.8 nm and to the SOHO measurements of UV radiation in the 26-to 34-nm band. In particular, it is demonstrated that UV radiation is generated several (1–10) minutes before X-ray emission for most flares considered in the study. It is shown that the energy of flare emission in the extreme ultraviolet is usually not greater than ~10% of its preflare level and that energy fluxes in different wavelength ranges are related by a power law. Such an analysis makes it possible to better understand the mechanism of flare development.  相似文献

The X-ray spectrometer IRIS was designed to register the fluxes of quanta with energies ranging from 2 to 250 keV in various time-resolution modes: 0.01, 1.0, and 2.5 s in 4, 64, and 12 channels, respectively. Owing to the high instrument sensitivity, individual spikes of tens of milliseconds can be distinguished in the time structure of the X-ray flare emission. The time spectral analysis carried out for the X-ray emission of a number of registered flares points to the presence of a quasiperiodic structure with characteristic times of the same order. For the flares of December 19, 2001, and August 10, 2002, the process of energy release has been considered with a 1-s time resolution, and its periodic character has been revealed. For the flare of December 19, 2001, the energy spectra of the hard X-ray emission have been simulated by thermal and nonthermal models. It has been shown that the both models can describe this emission.  相似文献

Thirty active regions were observed on the Sun during the period from October 19 to November 20, 2003. Hard X-ray and gamma-ray radiation was detected from four active regions (10484, 10486, 10488, and 10490): 14 solar flares stronger than M5.0 according to the GOES classification were recorded during this period by detectors onboard the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES), Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI), and other satellites. Five of these flares (and also the M2.7 flare of October 27, 2003) were also observed by the AVS-F apparatus onboard the CORONAS-F satellite. This paper discusses the time profiles and energy spectra of the solar flares of October 26, 2003 (M7.6), and October 29, 2003 (X10), and of the initial phase of the flare of November 4, 2003 (X18), obtained by the AVS-F instrument during the passage of the satellite over the regions near the geomagnetic equator. The spectra of the M7.6 flare of October 26, 2003, and of the initial phase of the X18 flare of November 4, 2003, in the energy band from 0.1 to 17 MeV contain no lines, whereas the spectrum of the flare of October 29, 2003, exhibits nuclear lines and the 2.2-MeV line during the entire flare gamma-ray emission registration. We also report the time profiles of the flare of October 29, 2003, in the energy bands corresponding to the continuum in the energy band 0.3–0.6 MeV, the nuclear lines of 56Fe, 24Mg, 20Ne, 28Si, 12C, and 16O, and the 2.2-MeV neutron-capture line. The analysis of these temporal profile periodograms shows the presence of a thin structure with characteristic scales from 34 to 158 s at the 99% confidence level. The AVS-F apparatus analyzes temporal profiles of low-energy gamma-ray emission with a temporal resolution of 1 ms within the first 4.096 seconds of solar flares. The analysis of the data reveals no regularities in the time series on time scales ranging from 2 to 100 ms at a confidence level of 99% for these three solar flares.  相似文献

The AVS-F apparatus onboard the CORONAS-F satellite (operated from July 31, 2001, to December 6, 2005) was intended for investigation of solar hard X-ray and gamma-ray radiation and for registration of gamma-ray bursts. The AVS-F apparatus constitutes a system for processing the data from two detectors: SONG-D (a CsI(Tl) scintillation detector 200 mm in diameter and 100 mm in height, fully surrounded by plastic anticoincidence shield) and RPS-1 (a solid state CdTe detector 4.9 mm × 4.9 mm in size). Over 60 solar flares stronger than M1.0 class by GOES classification were registered during the period from August 2001 to February 2005. Most flares showed gamma-ray emission during the periods when a rise in the X-ray flux was observed by the GOES instruments. Some flares produced gamma-rays only at maximum X-ray emission; for some flares, the durations of gamma-ray and X-ray emissions were the same. Up to six complexes of spectral lines were detected in some solar flares. The AVS-F instrument analyzes temporal profiles of low-energy gamma-ray emission with a temporal resolution of 1 ms within the first 4.096 seconds of solar flares. The preliminary analysis of such temporal profiles for seven solar flares revealed time regularities with scales from 7 to 35 ms in the 0.1-to 20-MeV energy range only for the flare of January 20, 2005, at a confidence level of 99%.  相似文献

We studied the geological structure and characteristics of fluxes of fast and epithermal neutrons from the area of Mars within 50°S–50° N and 120°–240° W, the Medusae Fossae-Elysium region. The study area does not show any anomalies in the energy spectrum of fast neutrons, indicating that a thin (10–20 cm) subsurface layer in the equatorial region is characterized by quite a uniform distribution of hydrogen-containing phases. At the same time, the studied region is characterized by a distinct depression in the epithermal-neutron flux, which is outlined by a 0.150–0.170 counts/s contour line and does not show any seasonal changes in its shape, depth, and latitudinal position. This suggests that the depression is not associated with the short-term (seasonal) variations of the temperature regime and that it represents an aggregation of hydrogen-containing phases with longer lifetimes. The position of the epithermal-neutron-flux depression does not correlate with regional geology, and none of the geological units can be responsible for its appearance. To a rather greater degree, the flux of epithermal neutrons correlates with the amount of dust material on the surface. This indicates that the dust material presumably played a major role in the formation of the neutron-flux depression within the Medusae Fossae-Elysium region. The depression of the epithermal-neutron flux presumably has a polygenic nature. It can be related both to the primary accumulation of water-bearing material and to the later blowing of this material by wind and transportation of the dust fraction with its simultaneous enrichment in hydrogen-containing phases (most likely, in water-bearing minerals).Translated from Astronomicheskii Vestnik, Vol. 39, No. 1, 2005, pp. 3–25. Extensive observations of solar flares made in high energy bands during the maximum of the present solar cycle are discussed with a special reference to the results from HINOTORI, and with attention to the relevant flare models. The hard X-ray (HXR) images from HINOTORI showed mostly coronal emission at 20–25 keV suggesting that the HXR is emitted from multiple coronal loops, consistent with the non-thermal electron beam model in a high density corona. The thermal HXR model seems to be inconsistent with some observations. Three types of flares which have been classified from the Hinotori results are described, along with newly discovered hot thermal component of 30–40 million K which contributes thermal HXR emission. A summary is given for the characteristics of the energy release in an impulsive burst; and an empirical model is described, which explains simultaneous energy releases in multiple loops and successive movements of the release site as suggested from the HXR morphology. The discovery of large blue-shifted hot plasma from the soft X-ray line spectrum leads to some quantitative arguments for the evaporating flare model. An electron-heated flare atmosphere appears to explain various observations consistently.Invited paper presented at the IAU Third Asian-Pacific Regional Meeting, held in Kyoto, Japan, between 30 September–6 October, 1984.  相似文献

The SPR-N polarimeter onboard the CORONAS-F satellite allows the X-ray polarization degree to be measured in energy ranges of 20–40, 40–60, and 60–100 keV. To measure the polarization, the method based on the Thompson scattering of solar X-ray photons in beryllium plates was used; the scattered photons were detected with a system of six CsI(Na) scintillation sensors. During the observation period from August 2001 to January 2005, the SPR-N instrument detected the hard X-rays of more than 90 solar flares. The October 29, 2003, event showed a significant polarization degree exceeding 70% in channels of E = 40–60 and 60–100 keV and about 50% in the 20-to 40-keV channel. The time profile of the polarization degree and the projection of the polarization plane onto the solar disk were determined. For 25 events, the upper limits of the part of polarized X-rays were estimated at 8 to 40%. For all the flares detected, time profiles (with a resolution of up to 4 s), hard X-ray radiation fluxes, and spectral index estimates were obtained.  相似文献

Analysis of the distribution of the epithermal and fast neutron fluxes from the Martian surface within the ±60° latitude zone measured by the High-Energy Neutron Detector (HEND) from mid-February through mid-June 2002 has revealed regional neutron-flux variations outside the zones of climatic effects, which appear to be attributable to the presence of chemically bound water. With the exception of the epithermal neutron fluxes in Arabia and southwest of Olympus Mons (Medusae Fossae), these variations show no correlation with the geologic structure of the terrain at the level of global geologic maps. The lack of such a correlation probably implies that to the formation depth of the epithermal neutron flux (1–2 m), let alone the fast neutron flux (20–30 cm), much of Mars is covered by a surface material that bears little relation in composition to local bedrocks. Clearly, this is an aeolian cover whose fine-grain component was mixed by dust storms in the geologic time on the scale of large regions. The decrease in the flux of epithermal neutrons in Arabia and southwest of Olympus Mons (Medusae Fossae) appears to be attributable to an enhanced concentration of materials containing chemically bound water (clay minerals, palagonite, hydroxides, and hydrosalts) in the surface layers of these regions.  相似文献

A study is made of Lyman continuum observations of solar flares, using data obtained by the Harvard College Observatory EUV spectroheliometer on the Apollo Telescope Mount. We find that there are two main types of flare regions: an overall mean flare coincident with the H flare region, and transient Lyman continuum kernels which can be identified with the H and X-ray kernels observed by other authors. It is found that the ground level hydrogen population in flares is closer to LTE than in the quiet Sun and active regions, and that the level of Lyman continuum formation is lowered in the atmosphere from a mass column density m 5/sx 10–6 g cm–2 in the quiet Sun to m 3/sx 10–4 g cm–2 in the mean flare, and to m 10–3g cm–2 in kernels. From these results we derive the amount of chromospheric material evaporated into the high temperature region, which is found to be - 1015g, in agreement with observations of X-ray emission measures. A comparison is made between kernel observations and the theoretical predictions made by model heating calculations, available in the literature; significant discrepancies are found between observation and current particle-heating models.  相似文献

High-resolution observations of atmospheric phenomena by the Mars Odyssey Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS) during its first mapping year are presented. An atmospheric campaign was implemented on the basis of previous spacecraft imaging. This campaign, however, proved of limited success. This appears to be due to the late local time of the Odyssey orbit (the locations of activity at 4–6 p.m. appear to be different from those at 2 p.m.). Ironically, images targeting the surface were more useful for study of the atmosphere than those images specifically targeting atmospheric features. While many previously recognized features were found, novel THEMIS observations included persistent clouds in the southern polar layered deposits, dust or condensate plumes on the northern polar layered deposits, dust plumes as constituent parts of local dust storms, and mesospheric clouds. The former two features tend to be aligned parallel and normal to polar troughs, respectively, suggesting a wind system directed normal to troughs and radially outward from the center of the polar deposits. This is consistent with katabatic drainage of air off the polar deposits, analogous to flow off Antarctica. The observation of dust lifting plumes at unprecedented resolution associated with local dust storms not only demonstrates the importance of mean wind stresses (as opposed to dust devils) in initiation of dust storms, but is also seen to be morphologically identical to dust lifting in terrestrial dust storms. As Odyssey moves to earlier local times, we suggest that the atmospheric campaign from the first mapping year be repeated.  相似文献

The recent observations of solar flares, made with a Lyot filter and a spectrograph in Hα, HeD3, higher Balmer lines, metallic lines, and continuum, are discussed. It is important to study the energy supply of non thermal particle/ conduction/ irradiation into the lower atmosphere from the optical observations with high temporal and spatial resolutions. Simultaneous observations from ground-based observatories and instruments on board satellites are necessary for understanding flare plasma of low and high energy.

We present the results of five-year observations of the southern seasonal cap of Mars based on neutron spectroscopy of the surface fulfilled by the Russian HEND instrument onboard the NASA 2001 Mars Odyssey spacecraft. The numerical modeling of the observational data allowed us to reconstruct the curves of the variations of the total mass of the southern seasonal cap of Mars for different years (three Martian years) and to find the year-to-year variations of the seasonal cycle.  相似文献

In the absence of burst events, the typical count-rate temporal profile of the AVS-F instrument in the low-energy gamma-ray band has a single broad maximum in the geomagnetic-equator region at latitudes from ?30° to +40°). However, the so-called quasi-stationary precipitations, i.e., increases in the count rate by up to 15–30% with respect to the average level determined using polynomial fits, were observed in some equatorial regions at latitudes from ?25° to +30°. At least four (type I, II, III, and IV) groups of such events can be distinguished according to their temporal profiles. The temporal profiles of about 44% events show a rapid increase to the south from the geomagnetic equator and a gradual decrease in the northern direction. For about 21% of analyzed events, on the contrary, the count rate increases sharply to the north of the geomagnetic equator and decreases gradually to the south. About 4% of events have symmetric temporal profiles. Finally, another 4% of the detected events have the form of a significant (a factor of 1.3–1.8) increase in the count rate with a central maximum. Typical durations of precipitations are 7–10 min (the size of the precipitation region is 20°–35°). However, short events lasting for ~3 min (the size of the precipitation region is ~10°) were observed. The mean time interval in which the precipitations were observed in regions with dimensions of 10° in geographic latitude by 30° in geographic longitude was about 24 h (the maximum interval exceeded 8 days). The majority of precipitations were observed in a zone of width 40° centered at the geomagnetic equator. Quasi-stationary precipitations can be related to the precipitations of charged particles in certain regions of the Earth’s magnetosphere periodically crossed by the satellite.  相似文献

The paper presents a detailed study of the high energy X-ray observation of the most unusual solar events observed on 4 and 7 June, 1980 with the Hard X-Ray Burst Spectrometer (HXRBS) on Solar Maximum Mission (SMM) satellite. The hard X-ray data of the events are also compared with the radio microwave fluxes. The X-ray time profiles of these flares are characterized by the occurrence of impulsive phase superposed with a number of narrow spikes before the occurrence of the main energetic events. Studies of the temporal and spectral properties of these events indicated a quasi-oscillatory nature of the sources. Various models for explaining the evolution of the events are considered and the sequential firing loop model seems to be consistent with the observations of the events.Paper presented at the IAU Third Asian-Pacific Regional Meeting, held in Kyoto, Japan, between 30 September–6 October, 1984.  相似文献

From 15 September 1997 through 21 January 2006, only a single planet-encircling martian dust storm was observed by MGS-MOC. The onset of the storm occurred on 26 June 2001 (Ls=184.7°), earliest recorded to date. It was initiated in the southern mid-to-low latitudes by a series of local dust storm pulses that developed along the seasonal cap edge in Malea and in Hellas basin (Ls=176.2°-184.4°). The initial expansion of the storm, though asymmetric, was very rapid in all directions (3-32 m s−1). The main direction of propagation, however, was to the east, with the storm becoming planet encircling in the southern hemisphere on Ls=192.3°. Several distinct centers of active dust lifting were associated with the storm, with the longest persisting for 86 sols (Syria-Claritas). These regional storms helped generate and sustain a dust cloud (“haze”), which reached an altitude of about 60 km and a peak opacity of τdust∼5.0. By Ls=197.0°, the cloud had encircled the entire planet between 59.0° S and 60.0° N, obscuring all but the largest volcanoes. The decay phase began around Ls∼200.4° with atmospheric dust concentrations returning to nominal seasonal low-levels at Ls∼304.0°. Exponential decay time constants ranged from 30-117 sols. The storm caused substantial regional albedo changes (darkening and brightening) as a result of the redistribution (removal and deposition) of a thin veneer of surface dust at least 0.1-11.1 μm thick. It also caused changes in meteorological phenomena (i.e., dust storms, dust devils, clouds, recession of the polar caps, and possibly surface temperatures) that persisted for just a few weeks to more than a single Mars year. The redistribution of dust by large annual regional storms might help explain the long period (∼30 years) between the largest planet-encircling dust storms events.  相似文献

We have studied the evolution of electron energy and angular distributions using Monte Carlo technique for electron beams directed vertically downwards towards chromosphere for incident energies 30 keV, and 300 keV at different incidence angles. Using these distributions we have calculated microwave flux for different frequencies at a fixed column density as well as for a fixed frequency at different column densities. We have also calculated the total microwave flux coming out of solar atmosphere and have compared it with observations. Our results agree well with observational results and produce the observed nature of flux.  相似文献
