The atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases (GHGs) have increased dramatically since the industrial revolution. The atmospheric enrichment with CO2 and other GHGs has resulted in multiple negative consequences: such as the increase in the average temperature and the rise of the sea level. Hence, there is a growing interest in developing feasible methods to reduce the atmospheric levels of these gases. One of these strategies is to enhance C sequestration through the increase of soil organic carbon (SOC) pool by the amendment of agricultural soils with sewage sludge. However, there is considerable uncertainty about the effects (positive or negative) of sewage sludge applications on the SOC pool. Thus, a simple approach developed under laboratory conditions is presented to discern the effect of a single sewage sludge application of 50 t ha−1 on the short-term SOC pool in 60 contrasting agricultural soils. The role of soil factors in the C sequestration of the recently added carbon was also studied. The application of sewage sludge supposed a mean increase of 1.7 ± 1.6 g SOC kg−1, with peak increases of up to 3.8 g SOC kg−1 and decreases of up to 4.6 g SOC kg−1. The initial SOC contents conditioned the C sequestration after sewage sludge application, and no other soil property was related.  相似文献

In highlands of semiarid Turkey, ecosystems have been significantly transformed through human actions, and today changes are taking place very rapidly, causing harmful consequences such as soil degradation. This paper examines two neighboring land use types in Indagi Mountain Pass, Cankiri, Turkey, to determine effects of the conversion of Blackpine (Pinus nigra Arn. subsp. pallasiana) plantation from grassland 40 years ago on soil organic carbon (SOC) and soil erodibility (USLE-K). For this purpose, a total of 302 disturbed and undisturbed soil samples were taken at irregular intervals from two sites and from two soil depths of 0–10 cm (D1) and 10–20 cm (D2). In terms of SOC, conversion did not make any statistical difference between grassland and plantation; however, there were statistically significant differences with soil depth within each land use, and SOC contents significantly decreased with the soil depth (P < 0.05) and mostly accumulated in D1. SOC values were 2.4 and 1.8% for grassland and 2.8 and 1.6% for plantation, respectively, at D1 and D2. USLE-K values also statistically differed significantly with the land use, and in contrast to the statistics of SOC, there was no change in USLE-K with the soil depth. Since USLE-K was estimated using SOC, hydraulic conductivity (HC) and soil textural composition––sand (S), silt (Si), and clay (C) contents of soils––as well as SOC did not change with the land use, we ascribed the changes of USLE-K with the land uses to the differences in the HC as strongly affected by the interactions between SOC and contents of S, Si, and C. On an average, the soil of the grassland (USLE-K = 0.161 t ha h ha−1 MJ−1 mm−1) was more erodible than those of the plantation (USLE-K = 0.126 t ha h ha−1 MJ−1 mm−1). Additionally, topographic factors, such as aspect and slope, were statistically effective on spatial distribution of the USLE-K and SOC.  相似文献

Soil nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium concentrations accurately revealed spatial distribution maps and site-specific management-prone areas through inverse distance weighting (IDW) method in the Amik Plain, Turkey. Spatial mapping of soil nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium is a very severe need to develop an economically and environmentally sound soil management plans. The objectives of this study were (a) to map spatial variability of total N, available P, and exchangeable-K content of Amik Plain’s soils and (b) to locate problematic areas requiring site specific management strategies for the nutrient elements. Spatial analyses of Kjeldhal-N, Olsen-P, and exchangeable-K concentrations of the soils were performed by the IDW method. Mean N content for surface soils (0–20 cm) was 1.38 g kg−1, available P was 28.19 kg ha−1 and exchangeable-K was 690 kg ha−1 with the differences between maximum and minimum being 7.63 g N kg−1, 242 kg P ha−1, and 2,082 kg K ha−1. For the surface soil, site-specific management-prone areas of Kjeldahl-N, Olsen-P, and exchangeable-K for “low and high + very high” classes were found to be 20.1–17.8%, 24.7–10.0%, and 4.1–39.6%, respectively. Consequently, lands with excessive nutrient elements require preventive-leaching practices, whereas nutrient-poor areas need fertilizer applications in favor of increasing plant production.  相似文献

With the aim of evaluating temporal changes in sedimentation and organic carbon (Corg) supplied over the last ~100 years, a sediment core was collected at Soledad Lagoon, a costal ecosystem surrounded by mangroves, located in the Cispatá Estuary (Caribbean coast of Colombia). The core sediments were characterized by low concentrations of calcium carbonate (0.2–2.9%), organic matter (3–8%), total nitrogen (0.11–0.38%), and total phosphorus (0.19–0.65 mg g−1). Fe and Al concentrations ranged from 4% to 5%, and Mn from 356 to 1,047 μg g−1. The 210Pb-derived sediment and mass accumulation rates were 1.54 ± 0.18 mm year−1 and 0.08 ± 0.01 g cm−2 year−1, respectively. The sediment core did not provide evidence of human impact, such as enhancement of primary production or nutrient enrichment, which may result from recent land uses changes or climate change. The Corg fluxes estimated for Soledad Lagoon core lay in the higher side of carbon fluxes to coastal ecosystems (314–409 g m−2 year−1) and the relatively high Corg preservation observed (~45%) indicate that these lagoon sediments has been a net and efficient sink of Corg during the last century, which corroborate the importance of mangrove areas as important sites for carbon burial and therefore, long-term sequestration of Corg.  相似文献

With few available soil organic carbon (SOC) profiles and the heterogeneity of those that do exist, the estimation of SOC pools in karst areas is highly uncertain. Based on the spatial heterogeneity of SOC content of 23,536 samples in a karst watershed, a modified estimation method was determined for SOC storage that exclusively applies to karst areas. The method is a “soil-type method” based on revised calculation indexes for SOC storage. In the present study, the organic carbon contents of different soil types varied greatly, but generally decreased with increasing soil depth. The organic carbon content decreased nearly linearly to a depth of 0–50 cm and then varied at depths of 50–100 cm. Because of the large spatial variability in the karst area, we were able to determine that influences of the different indexes on the estimation of SOC storage decreased as follows: soil thickness > boulder content > rock fragment content > SOC content > bulk density. Using the modified formula, the SOC content in the Houzhai watershed in Puding was estimated to range from 3.53 to 5.44 kg m?2, with an average value of 1.24 kg m?2 to a depth of 20 cm, and from 4.44 to 14.50 kg m?2, with an average value of 12.12 kg m?2 to a depth of 100 cm. The total SOC content was estimated at 5.39 × 105 t.  相似文献

Coal handling, crushing, washing, and other processes of coal beneficiation liberate coal particulate matter, which would ultimately contaminate the nearby soils. In this study, an attempt was made to determine the status of soil bio-indicators in the surroundings of a coal beneficiation plant, (in relation to a control site). The coal beneficiation plant is located at Sudamudih, and the control site is 5 km away from the contaminated site, which is located in the colony of Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research Institute, Digwadih, Dhanbad. In order to estimate the impact of coal deposition on soil biochemical characteristics and to identify the most sensitive indicator, soil samples were taken from the contaminated and the control sites, and analyzed for soil organic carbon (SOC), soil N, soil basal respiration (BSR), substrate-induced respiration (SIR), and soil enzymes like dehydrogenase (DHA), catalase (CAT), phenol oxidase (PHE), and peroxidase (PER). Coal deposition on soils improved the SOC from 10.65 to 50.17 g kg−1, CAT from 418.1 to 804.11 μg H2O2 g−1 h−1, BSR from 8.5 to 36.15 mg CO2–C kg−1 day−1, and SIR from 24.3 to 117.14 mg CO2–C kg−1 day−1. Soils receiving coal particles exhibited significant decrease in DHA (36.6 to 4.22 μg TPF g−1 h−1), PHE (0.031 to 0.017 μM g−1 h−1), PER (0.153 to 0.006 μM g−1 h−1), and soil N (55.82 to 26.18 kg ha−1). Coal depositions significantly (P < 0.01) decreased the DHA to 8.8 times, PHE to 1.8 times, and PER to 25.5 times, but increased the SOC to 4.71 times, CAT to 1.9 times, SIR to 4.82 times, and BSR to 4.22 times. Based on principal component analysis and sensitivity test, soil peroxidase (an enzyme that plays a vital role in the degradation of the aromatic organic compounds) is found to be the most important indicator that could be considered as biomarkers for coal-contaminated soils.  相似文献

Though irrigation with sewage water has potential benefits of meeting the water requirements, the sewage irrigation may mess up to harm the soil health. To assess the potential impacts of long-term sewage irrigation on soil health and to identify sensitive soil indicators, soil samples were collected from crop fields that have been irrigated with sewage water for more than 20 years. An adjacent rain-fed Leucaena leucocephala plantation system was used as a reference to compare the impact of sewage irrigation on soil qualities. Soils were analyzed for different physical, chemical, biological and biochemical parameters. Results have shown that use of sewage for irrigation improved the clay content to 18–22.7%, organic carbon to 0.51–0.86% and fertility status of soils. Build up in total N was up to 2,713 kg ha−1, available N (397 kg ha−1), available P (128 kg ha−1), available K (524 kg ha−1) and available S (65.5 kg ha−1) in the surface (0.15 m) soil. Long-term sewage irrigation has also resulted a significant build-up of DTPA extractable Zn (314%), Cu (102%), Fe (715%), Mn (197.2), Cd (203%), Ni (1358%) and Pb (15.2%) when compared with the adjacent rain-fed reference soil. Soils irrigated with sewage exhibited a significant decrease in microbial biomass carbon (−78.2%), soil respiration (−82.3%), phosphatase activity (−59.12%) and dehydrogenase activity (−59.4%). An attempt was also made to identify the sensitive soil indicators under sewage irrigation, where microbial biomass carbon was singled out as the most sensitive indicator.  相似文献

We report integrated measurements of sediment oxygen consumption (SOC) and bottom water plankton community respiration rates (WR) during eight cruises from 2003 to 2007 on the Louisiana continental shelf (LCS) where hypoxia develops annually. Averaged by cruise, SOC ranged from 3.9 to 25.8 mmol O2 m−2 day−1, whereas WR ranged from 4.1 to 10.8 mmol O2 m−3 day−1. Total below-pycnocline respiration rates ranged from 46.4 to 104.5 mmol O2 m−2 day−1. In general, below-pycnocline respiration showed low variability over a large geographic and temporal range, and exhibited no clear spatial or inter-annual patterns. SOC was strongly limited by dissolved oxygen (DO) in the overlying water; whereas, WR was insensitive to low DO, a relationship that may be useful for parameterizing future models. The component measures, WR and SOC, were similar to most prior measurements, both from the LCS and from other shallow estuarine and coastal environments. The contribution of SOC to total below-pycnocline respiration averaged 20 ± 4%, a finding that differs from several prior LCS studies, but one that was well supported from the broader estuarine and oceanic literature. The data reported here add substantially to those available for the LCS, thus helping to better understand oxygen dynamics on the LCS.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine peat formation processes throughout the millennia in four tidal marshes in the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta. Peat cores collected at each site were analyzed for bulk density, loss on ignition, and percent organic carbon. Core data and spline fit age–depth models were used to estimate inorganic sedimentation, organic accumulation, and carbon sequestration rates in the marshes. Bulk density and percent organic matter content of peat fluctuated through time at all sites, suggesting that peat formation processes are dynamic and responsive to watershed conditions. The balance between inorganic sedimentation and organic accumulation at the sites also varied through time, indicating that marshes may rely more strongly on either inorganic or organic matter for peat formation at particular times in their existence. Mean carbon sequestration rates found in this study (0.38–0.79 Mg C ha−1 year−1) were similar to other long-term estimates for temperate peatlands.  相似文献

The root biomass distribution in alpine ecosystems (alpine meadow, alpine steppe, desert grassland and alpine desert) was investigated along a transect on the northern Tibetan Plateau in 2009. The results showed that roots were mainly concentrated in the 0–20 cm layer, and root biomass decreased exponentially with increasing soil depth. Root biomass was estimated to be 1,381.41 ± 245.29 g m−2 in the top 20 cm soil, accounting for 85% of the total root biomass. The distribution pattern of the root biomass proportion along the soil profile was similar in different alpine ecosystems. The root biomass density varied with different alpine ecosystems and the total average root biomass was 1,626.08 ± 301.76 g m−2. Root biomass was significantly correlated with average relative humidity, annual precipitation and soil organic matter. This indicates that precipitation and soil organic matter might be crucial for plant growth in the study area, while temperature is not an important factor controlling root growth.  相似文献

Terra rossa and eutric cambisol soils were surveyed in Slovenia. At both sites, 6–13 boreholes were drilled in a regular 24 m × 24 m square grid. Soil samples from various depths were taken for gamma spectrometric analysis, and radon in soil gas was measured at a depth of 80 cm using an AlphaGuard instrument. The following ranges of activity concentration (Bq kg−1) were obtained for 238U, 226Ra, 228Ra, 40K and 137Cs: in terra rossa, 64–74, 70–84, 45–49, 293–345, 20–30 and, in eutric cambisol, 55–80, 132–147, 50–57, 473–529, 106–272. Radon activity concentrations in both soils ranged from about 100 kBq m−3 to 370 kBq m−3.  相似文献

Nitrogen addition to soil can play a vital role in influencing the losses of soil carbon by respiration in N-deficient terrestrial ecosystems. The aim of this study was to clarify the effects of different levels of nitrogen fertilization (HN, 200 kg N ha−1 year−1; MN, 100 kg N ha−1 year−1; LN, 50 kg N ha−1 year−1) on soil respiration compared with non-fertilization (CK, 0 kg N ha−1 year−1), from July 2007 to September 2008, in temperate grassland in Inner Mongolia, China. Results showed that N fertilization did not change the seasonal patterns of soil respiration, which were mainly controlled by soil heat-water conditions. However, N fertilization could change the relationships between soil respiration and soil temperature, and water regimes. Soil respiration dependence on soil moisture was increased by N fertilization, and the soil temperature sensitivity was similar in the treatments of HN, LN, and CK treatments (Q 10 varied within 1.70–1.74) but was slightly reduced in MN treatment (Q 10 = 1.63). N fertilization increased soil CO2 emission in the order MN > HN > LN compared with the CK treatment. The positive effects reached a significant level for HN and MN (P < 0.05) and reached a marginally significant level for LN (P = 0.059 < 0.1) based on the cumulative soil respiration during the 2007 growing season after fertilization (July–September 2007). Furthermore, the differences between the three fertilization treatments and CK reached the very significant level of 0.01 on the basis of the data during the first entire year after fertilization (July 2007–June 2008). The annual total soil respiration was 53, 57, and 24% higher than in the CK plots (465 g m−2 year−1). However, the positive effects did not reach the significant level for any treatment in the 2008 growing season after the second year fertilization (July–September 2008, P > 0.05). The pairwise differences between the three N-level treatments were not significant in either year (P > 0.05).  相似文献

Daily and annual integrated rates of primary productivity and community respiration were calculated using physiological parameters measured in oxygen-based photosynthesis-irradiance (P-I) incubations at 8 stations throughout central and western Long Island Sound (cwLIS) during the summer and autumn of 2002 and 2003 and the late spring of 2003. Each calculation takes into account actual variations in incident irradiance over the day and underwater irradiance and standing stock with depth. Annual peak rates, ±95% confidence interval of propagated uncertainty in each measurement, of gross primary production (GPP, 1,730±610 mmol O2 m−2 d−1), community respiration (Rc, 1,660±270 mmol O2 m−2 d−1), and net community production (NCP, 1,160±1,100 mmol O2 m−2 d−1) occurred during summer at the western end of the Sound. Lowest rates of GPP (4±11 mmol O2 m−2 d−1), Rc (−50±300 mmol O2 m−2 d−1), and NCP (−1,250±270 mmol O2 m−2 d−1) occurred during late autumn-early winter at the outer sampled stations. These large ranges in rates of GPP, Rc, and NCP throughout the photic zone of cwLIS are attributed to seasonal and spatial variability. Algal respiration (Ra) was estimated to consume an average of 5% to 52% of GPP, using a literature-based ratio of Ra:Rc. From this range, we established that the estimated Ra accounts for approximately half of GPP, and was used to estimate daily net primary production (NPP), which ranged from 2 to 870 mmol O2 m−2 d−1 throughout cwLIS during the study. Annual NPP averaged 40±8 mol O2 m−2 yr−1 for all sampled stations, which more than doubled along the main axis of the Sound, from 32±14 mol O2 m−2 yr−1 at an eastern station to 82±25 mol O2 m−2 yr−1 at the western-most station. These spatial gradients in productivity parallel nitrogen loads along the main axis of the Sound. Daily integrals of productivity were used to test and formulate a simple, robust biomass-light model for the prediction of phytoplankton production in Long Island Sound, and the slope of the relationship was consistent with reports for other systems.  相似文献

This paper estimates CO2 fluxes in a municipal site for final disposal of solid waste, located in Gualeguaychu, Argentina. Estimations were made using the accumulation chamber methods, which had been calibrated previously in laboratory. CO2 fluxes ranged from 31 to 331 g m−2 day−1. Three different populations were identified: background soil gases averaging 46 g m−2 day−1, intermediate anomalous values averaging 110 g m−2 day−1 and high anomalous values averaging 270 g m−2 day−1. Gas samples to a depth of 20 cm were also taken. Gas fractions, XCO2 < 0.1, XCH4 < 0.01, XN2 ~0.71 and XO2 ~0.21, δ13C of CO2 (−34 to −18‰), as well as age of waste emplacement, suggest that the study site may be at the final stage of aerobic biodegradation. In a first approach, and following the downstream direction of groundwater flow, alkalinity and δ13C of dissolved inorganic carbon (−15 to 4‰) were observed to increase when groundwater passed through the disposal site. This suggests that the CO2 generated by waste biodegradation dissolves or that dissolved organic matter appears as a result of leachate degradation.  相似文献

SeaWiFS ocean color measurements were used to investigate interannual, monthly, and weekly variations in chlorophylla (chla) on the Louisiana shelf and to assess relationships with river discharge, nitrate load, and hypoxia. During the study period (2000–2003), interannual changes in shelf-wide chla concentrations averaged over January–July ranged from +57% to −33% of the 4-yr average, in accord with freshwater discharge changes of +20% to −29% and nitrate load changes of +20% to −35% from the Mississippi and Atchafalaya Rivers. Chla variations were largest on the shelf between the Mississippi and Atchafalaya Deltas. Within this region, which corresponds spatially to the area of most frequent hypoxia, lowest January–July mean chla concentrations (5.5 mg m−3 over 7,000 km2) occurred during 2000, the year of lowest freshwater discharge (16,136 m3 s−1) and nitrate load (55,738 MT N d−1) onto the shelf. Highest January–July mean chla concentrations (13 mg m−3 over 7,000 km2) were measured in 2002, when freshwater discharge (27,440 m3s−1) and nitrate load (101,761 MT N d−1) were highest and second highest, respectively. Positive correlations (R2=0.4–0.5) were found between chla and both fresh water and nitrate loads with 0 to 1 month lags, with the strongest relationships just west of the Mississippi Delta. In 2001, unusually clear skies allowed the identification of distinct spring and summer chla blooms west of the Mississippi Delta 4–5 wk after peaks in river discharge. East of the delta, the chla concentrations peaked in June and July, following the seasonal reversal in the coastal current. A clear linkage was not detected between satellite-measured chla and hypoxia during the 4-yr period, based on a time series of bottom oxygen concentrations at one station within the area of most frequent hypoxia. Clear relationships are confounded by the interaction of physical processes (wind stress effects) with the seasonal cycle of nutrient-enhanced productivity and are influenced by the prior year's nitrate load and carbon accumulation at the seabed.  相似文献

Fluxes of carbon dioxide, water vapor, and heat were measured above crop canopy using the eddy covariance method during the 2008 maize growing season, over an agricultural field within an oasis located in the middle reaches of Heihe River basin, northwest China. The values for friction velocity, the Monin–Obukhov stability parameter, and energy balance closure indicated that the eddy covariance system at this study site provided reliable flux estimates. Results from measurements showed that the mean sensible heat flux was 70 W m−2 with a maximum value of 164 W m−2 (May) and a minimum value of 45 W m−2 (July) during the maize growing season. In contrast, the mean latent heat was 278 W m−2 with a maximum value of 383 W m−2 (July) and minimum of 101 W m−2 (May). The mean downward soil heat flux was 55 W m−2 with a maximum value of 127 W m−2 (May) and minimum of 49 W m−2 (July). The magnitude of mean daytime net CO2 uptake was −11.50 μmol m−2 s−1 with a maximum value of −28.32 μmol m−2 s−1 (18 and 19 July) and a minimum values of −0.32 μmol m−2 s−1 (18 and 19 May). Correlation was observed between daytime half-hourly carbon dioxide flux and canopy conductance. In addition, the relationship between carbon dioxide flux and photosynthetically active radiation for selected days during different stages of maize growing season indicated the carbon dioxide flux uptake by the canopy was controlled by actual photosynthetic activity related to the variation of green leaf area index for the different growing stages.  相似文献

This study examined freshwater discharge of dissolved organic matter (DOM) to the shallow Lavaca–Matagorda (LM) Bay estuarine system along the central Texas coast and investigated whether chromophoric DOM (CDOM) photochemical reactions have the potential to stimulate microbial activity within LM estuarine waters. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations ranged from 3 to 10 mg C l−1 and CDOM levels (reported as a 305) ranged from 8 to 77 m−1 during April and July, 2007, when the LM system was experiencing very high freshwater inputs. DOC and CDOM levels were well-correlated with salinities > 3, but exhibited considerable variability at salinities < 3. CDOM photobleaching rates (i.e., decrease in a 305 resulting from exposure to solar radiation) for estuarine samples ranged from 0.014 to 0.021 h−1, corresponding to photobleaching half-lives of 33–50 h. Our data indicate when Matagorda Bay waters photobleach; dissolved organic carbon utilization is enhanced perhaps due to enhanced microbial respiration of biologically labile photoproducts (BLPs). Net ecosystem metabolism calculations indicate that most of the LM system was net heterotrophic during our study. We estimate that BLP formation could support up to 20% of the daily microbial respiratory C demand in LM surface waters and combined with direct photochemical oxygen consumption could have an important influence on O2 cycles in the LM system.  相似文献

We investigated the role of sandy beaches in nearshore nutrient cycling by quantifying macrophyte wrack inputs and examining relationships between wrack accumulation and pore water nutrients during the summer dry season. Macrophyte inputs, primarily giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera, exceeded 2.3 kg m−1 day−1. Mean wrack biomass varied 100-fold among beaches (range = 0.41 to 46.43 kg m−1). Mean concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), primarily NOx-N, and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) in intertidal pore water varied significantly among beaches (ranges = 1 to 6,553 μM and 7 to 2,006 μM, respectively). Intertidal DIN and DON concentrations were significantly correlated with wrack biomass. Surf zone concentrations of DIN were also strongly correlated with wrack biomass and with intertidal DIN, suggesting export of nutrients from re-mineralized wrack. Our results suggest beach ecosystems can process and re-mineralize substantial organic inputs and accumulate dissolved nutrients, which are subsequently available to nearshore waters and primary producers.  相似文献

An unusual phytoplankton bloom dominated by unidentified green coloured spherical algal cells (∼5μm diameter) and dinoflagellates (Heterocapsa, Scripsiella and Gymnodinium) was encountered along the coast of Goa, India during 27 and 29 January, 2005. Pigment analysis was carried out using both fluorometric and HPLC methods. Seawater samples collected from various depths within the intense bloom area showed high concentrations of Chl a (up to 106 mg m − 3) associated with low bacterial production (0.31 to 0.52 mg C m − 3 h − 1) and mesozooplankton biomass (0.03 ml m − 3). Pigment analyses of the seawater samples were done using HPLC detected marker pigments corresponding to prasinophytes, dinoflagellates and diatoms. Chlorophyll b (36–56%) followed by peridinin (15–30%), prasinoxanthin (11–17%) and fucoxanthin (7–15%) were the major diagnostic pigments while pigments of cryptophytes and cyanobacteria including alloxanthin and zeaxanthin formed <10%. Although microscopic analysis indicated a decline in the bloom, pheaophytin concentrations in the water column measured by both techniques were very low, presumably due to fast recycling and/or settling rate. The unique composition of the bloom and its probable causes are discussed in this paper.  相似文献

In this study, two sediment cores (~70 cm) were collected from separate mangrove forests straddling the Ba Lat Estuary, Red River of northern Vietnam, to examine the origins of sedimentary organic carbon (SOC) and reconstruct the paleoenvironment. In addition, mangrove leaves and particulate organic matter were collected and measured for δ13C to trace the origins of SOC. The cores were analyzed by high-resolution sections for δ13C, TOC, C/N ratios, sediment grain size, water content, and porosity, with values of δ13C, TOC, and C/N ratios ranging from −28.19 to −22.5‰, 2.14–30.94 mg/g, and 10.29–18.32, respectively. The δ13C and TOC relationship indicated that there were some small residual effects of diagenetic processes on TOC and δ13C values in mangrove sediments. However, the shifts of δ13C and C/N ratios from the bottom to the surface sediment of the cores explained the change in organic matter sources, with values of C/N > 12 and δ13C < −25‰, and C/N < 12 and δ13C > −25‰ indicated terrestrial (e.g., mangrove litter) and marine phytoplankton sources, respectively. The covarying δ13C, C/N ratios, and sediment grain sizes during the past 100 years in sediment cores showed that the paleoenvironment may be reconstructed into three environments (subtidal, tidal flat, and intertidal mangrove). General trends in δ13C and C/N followed a gradual increase in the C/N ratio and a concomitant decrease in δ13C from the subtidal, through to tidal flat, and to the intertidal mangrove. δ13C and C/N ratios are therefore effective in measuring the continuum of environmental change in mangrove ecosystem.  相似文献
