Superposition of paleomagnetic polarity logs of seven chronologically overlapping piston cores from the central equatorial Pacific, using the established tropical radiolarian zonation as a stratigraphic reference, produced a nearly continuous correlation of magnetic and radiolarian events ranging from late Pleistocene to earliest Miocene. Twenty magnetic polarity epochs, and possibly as many as 30 polarity events, occur during this time span. Epoch 16 (reversed polarity) appears to be the longest interval ( 14.8–17.6m.y. B.P.) among these Neogene magnetostratigraphic units. The middle/late Miocene boundary is shown to fall within latest Epoch 11 (normal) and its approximate age is between 10.5 and 11 m.y. B.P. The early/middle Miocene boundary occurs within the top of Epoch 16 at a suggested age of about 15 m.y. B.P.  相似文献

Fission-track dates and planktonic microfossil datum levels provide a revised chronology for the marine Late Cenozoic of southern California. In southern California, the Pliocene/Pleistocene boundary has been placed at the first appearance of Globorotalia truncatulinoides within the Pico Formation, Balcom Canyon, Ventura County. A fission-track age on glass shards from the Bailey Ash close to this level yields a result of 1.12 ± 0.36 m.y. B.P. (millions of years before present). In tropical deep-sea cores, however, G. truncatulinoides has been shown to evolve within the Gilsa paleomagnetic event with an estimated age of 1.8 m.y. B.P. Thus, the first appearance of G. truncatulinoides in southern California is cryptogenic and probably related to the delayed migration into this region of water-mass conditions suitable for this species. Two volcanic ashes from the upper part of the Malaga Formation, Malaga Cove, Los Angeles County, yielded fission-track dates on glass shards of 4.42 ± 0.57 m.y. B.P. (lower ash) and 3.364 ± 0.69 m.y. B.P. (upper ash). These dates, in addition to inferred paleomagnetic ages of planktonic microfossil datum levels suggest that the Delmontian Stage of California ranges in age from ~6 to ~3 m.y. B.P. Therefore, the Miocene/Pliocene boundary considered by Berggren and Van Couvering to be ~5 m.y. B.P. must lie in the lower Delmontian Stage but paleontologic criteria for its recognition in California are not yet available.  相似文献

Paleomagnetic and/or micropaleontological studies have been carried out on approximately 28 sedimentary cores of latest Pleistocene age from the Gulf of Mexico. Sedimentation rates range from 9 cm to 20 cm/1000 yr. A distinct excursion in the earth's magnetic field occurs in the upper parts of 8 of 15 cores for which paleomagnetic studies were conducted and is independently correlated with planktonic foraminiferal zones. An inclination change to zero or negative inclination is often associated with a declination change. The age of the excursion was determined by extrapolation of sedimentation rates from the Z-Y paleontological boundary which is dated at 11,000 B.P. The magnetic excursion occurred between 12,500 and 17,000 yr ago within the upper part of zone Y. This falls within the age range of the Laschamp Event as originally defined.  相似文献

Palaeomagnetic and palaeontological studies on samples withdrawn from a 250-m-long unorientated core from Reggio di Calabria, Italy (38°N, 16°E) are described. The lower 200 m of core penetrated off-shore clays and visual examination of the split sections of core indicated no obvious breaks in deposition. After alternating field demagnetization in 200 Oe the palaeomagnetic inclination log shows the Brunhes/Matuyama boundary at 110 m below which the Jaramillo and Olduvai Events within the Matuyama Epoch are identified. This interpretation of the magnetostratigraphy is supported by palaeontological evidence. The rate of accumulation of clay is estimated to have ranged between about 60 and 190 mm/kyr with an overall average through the Matuyama Epoch of about 90 mm/kyr. Assuming that this average rate continued through the Brunhes Epoch, the age of the top of the clay unit is estimated to be about 90,000 yr B.P. About 5 m from the unconformable top surface of the clay, a split sequence of reversed inclinations is interpreted as a record of the Blake Event, and the overall average deposition rate implies that its duration may have been as long as 50,000 yr. No other reversed event is recorded by the palaeomagnetic inclination log through the Brunhes Epoch, though there are four horizons where shallow positive inclinations are recorded.  相似文献

We report a fossil specimen referable to Sinomastodontinae gen. et sp. indet. from the Neogene strata at Yanghecun locality, Xihe County, Gansu Province, China. The specimen is characterized by a brevirostrine mandible, complete pretrite trefoils, and relatively simple posttrite half lophids, showing typical features of Sinomastodon. It differs from the other known species of Sinomastodon by the following features: relatively short and wide m3 due to fewer lophid numbers, less inflated pretrite accessory central conules, poorly developed secondary trefoils and cementum, and relatively strong cingulid. All of these features indicate a bias towards pleisiomorphies of Sinomastodon, implying that this specimen is more ancestral than any known species of Sinomastodon. The symphysis of the new specimen is relatively long, which differs from the typical brevirostrine Sinomastodon, and thus we consider it a gen. et sp. indet. in the Subfamily Sinomastodontinae. In addition, the horizon in which the present specimen was found probably represents the Upper Miocene because it is lower than Pliocene strata yielding Hipparion (Proboscidipparon) pater. Generally, Sinomastodon is considered to have migrated from North America at about the time of the Miocene/Pliocene boundary, and to have been derived from a certain clade of American gomphotheres. However, the discovery of the Yanghecun specimen verifies that Sinomastodon lived in East Asia during the Late Miocene, and probably derived from Old World gomphotheres (e.g., G. wimani). The similarity between the members of the Subfamilies Sinomastodontinae and those of Cuvieroniinae is suggested to have been the result of parallel evolution.  相似文献

We present new Middle Miocene paleomagnetic data for the central Japan Arc, and discuss their implications for Miocene rotation. To obtain a refined paleodirection, we made magnetic measurements on basaltic to andesitic lavas and intrusive rocks from 12 sites in the Tsugu volcanic rocks (ca 15 Ma) in the northern part of the Shitara area, Japan. Significant secondary magnetizations in samples with strong magnetic intensities are interpreted as lightning‐induced components. Mean directions carried by magnetite and/or titanomagnetite were determined for all sites. An overall mean direction with a northerly declination was obtained from dual‐polarity site means for nine sites. This direction is indistinguishable from the mean direction for coeval parallel dikes in the northern part of the Shitara area, and also indistinguishable from the Miocene reference direction derived from the paleopole for the North China Block in the Asian continent. These comparisons suggest little or no rotation or latitudinal motion in the study area with respect to the North China Block since 15 Ma. We obtained a refined early Middle Miocene paleodirection (D = 9.7°, I = 52.5°, α95 = 4.8°; 30 sites) and paleopole (82.0°N, 230.8°E, A95 = 5.6°) for Shitara by combining data from the Tsugu volcanic rocks and a coeval dike swarm. An anomalous direction found at three sites could be a record of an extraordinary field during a geomagnetic polarity transition or excursion. Paleomagnetic data from Shitara suggest that: (i) the western wing of the Kanto Syntaxis, a prominent cuspate geologic structure in central Honshu, underwent a counterclockwise rotation with respect to the main part of the southwestern Japan Arc between ca 17.5 Ma and 15 Ma; (ii) collision between the Japan and Izu–Bonin (Ogasawara) Arcs began prior to 15 Ma; and (iii) clockwise rotation of the entire southwestern part of the Japan Arc had ceased by 15 Ma.  相似文献

High-resolution stable oxygen isotope (δ18O on ostracod shells), XRF-scanning and bulk grain-size data obtained on a transect of 6 gravity cores from the continental slope in the northwestern Black Sea give new insight into the hydrological evolution of the Black Sea since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Stable climatic conditions during the LGM were followed by a series of meltwater pulses between 18 and 15.5 kyr BP that resulted in temporary isotopic depletion of the Black Sea waters. Subsequently, steadily increasing δ18O values in all cores are mainly caused by isotopically enriched precipitation at the onset of the Allerød/Bølling warm period. A comparison of the major trends in δ18O at different water depths suggests evaporation-driven deep water formation since ∼14.5 kyr BP, while the two shallowest cores from 168 and 465 m water depth were under the influence of increased warming in the upper water column since 14.5 and 12.5 kyr BP, respectively. The core from 168 m depth seems to be additionally influenced by freshwater input of the Danube. This core provides a high-resolution record from the Younger Dryas/Allerød boundary and suggests that a NAO-like climate mode was governing the interannual variability in the run-off of the Danube, which implies that this climate mode has been a persistent climatic feature over central Europe. The inflow of saline Mediterranean waters occurs between 9 and 8 kyr BP, where a merging of all δ18O records signals an initial homogenisation of the water column.  相似文献

Over 1000 m of fluvial molasse, exhibiting a stable detrital remanent magnetization, is exposed in a mammal-bearing sequence in the Upper Siwalik Group of the Pabbi Hills, Pakistan. The magnetic polarity chronology reveals that the sequence records a time period of 2.6 m.y., extending from the early Gauss Normal Epoch into the Brunhes Normal Epoch. During this period, sedimentation rates increased upward in time from 0.25 m/1000 yr to 0.45 m/1000 yr. The sudden disappearance of red beds and a change in the lithoclastic composition of basal channel sands suggests that about 800,000 years ago the primary source area began shifting from the metamorphic terrane of the Himalayan Orogen to a more local sedimentary terrane on the folded margins of the Himalayan foredeep. About 500,000 years ago the anticlinal Pabbi Hills attained surface expression. Uplift continued at a minimum rate of 1 m/1000 yr.A local Pliocene/Pleistocene boundary based on the Olduvai Normal Event is clearly recognized. Local fossil finds reveal thatEquus, diagnostic element of the Pinjor faunal zone, appeared locally about 1.8 m.y. ago and thatHipparion, a faunal element of the Tatrot and earlier faunal zones, persisted locally until at least 3.0 m.y. ago.  相似文献

Our understanding of the hydrodynamic response of peatland to climate change is restricted to the Holocene, which confines our knowledge of the fundamental controls on this important carbon reservoir to recent sedimentary successions. To understand the interaction of peatland hydrodynamics, climate and the carbon cycle on longer time scales, a 95.4 m record from lower Miocene lignite from the Gippsland Basin, Australia is considered. δ13C and colour records for the lignite were created by analysing samples every 0.1 m. Solid-state 13C NMR results indicate that lignite colour is related to the relative abundance of aliphatic carbon. The lack of a direct correlation between colour and δ13C demonstrates that the δ13C signal has not been significantly influenced by the diagenetic processes that produce the colour. An offset correlation occurs between δ13C and colour with the degree of offset decreasing from 4.5 m at the base to about 0 m at the top. This offset is considered to represent a zone of surface influence that extends up to 20 m below the peat surface. Using numerical modelling we demonstrate that this zone of surface influence and its gradual decline in thickness could arise as a consequence of enhanced fluid flow in regions of high tensile stress within the unconfined peat body. The removal of lignin and its derivatives from the zone of surface influence will be favoured by cooler drier periods, with lower sea level and high hydraulic gradients across the peatland. Therefore in the early Miocene this peatland acted as a carbon source during global cooling.  相似文献

We refine the tephrostratigraphy and cryptotephrostratigraphy of the Middle Pleistocene deep-sea sediments in the C9001C cores and reconstruct the age model of the cores to provide a standard stratigraphy for the NW Pacific Ocean area. In the lower half of the cores (corresponding to marine isotopic stages [MISs] 9–18), we newly identify nine concentrations (spikes) of glass shards (numbered G17–G25 from top to bottom) below sixteen previously reported spikes (numbered G1–G16) in the upper half of the cores (MISs 1–9). We correlated two spikes (both cryptotephras) with known widespread tephras: G18 with Naruohama-IV (MIS 10d; 357 ka) and G19 with Kasamori 5 (MIS 12b–c; 434–458 ka). Although the two cryptotephra spikes cannot be distinguished by the major- and trace-element compositions of glass shards, these correlations are based upon their stratigraphic occurrence within separate glacial periods (MISs 10 and 12) as indicated by the δ18O stratigraphy of the C9001C sequence. Based on the stratigraphic positions of the Naruohama-IV and Kasamori 5 tephras, we assign the sediment units corresponding to MISs 10, 11, and 12, and revise the previous assignment of core segments corresponding to MISs 7, 8, and 9. The resulting tephra-based age model is consistent with the last occurrence of Proboscia curvirostris, but it is inconsistent with the first occurrence of Emiliania huxleyi. According to the new age model, the sedimentation rate during MISs 18–2 has ranged from 0.21 m/ky (during MIS 17) to 0.74 m/ky (during MISs 8 and 9), however, the sedimentation rate was never as high as the rate of 1.1 m/ky indicated by an earlier age model.  相似文献

A Global Vertical Reference Frame (GVRF) has been realized by means of several regional and local vertical datums (LVD) distributed world-wide: the North American Vertical Datum 1988 (NAVD 88), Australian Height Datum 1971 (AHD 71), LVD France, Institute Géographique National 1969 (IGN 69) and Brazilian Height Datum 1957 (BHD 57). The vertical shifts of the above LVD origins have been related to the adopted reference geopotential value W 0 = (62 636 856.0 ± 0.5) m2s–2 and they were determined at the 5 cm level. However, the W 0 reference value can be chosen arbitrarily, the methodology, which was developed here, does not require that the above value be adopted.  相似文献

Abstract The Upper Cenozoic sedimentary sequences drilled at Sites 1150 and 1151, Ocean Drilling Program Leg 186, enabled establishment of radiolarian zonation and calibration of the age of bioevents in the forearc area of the northern Japan Islands. The sequences were divided into nine zones from the Pleistocene Botryostrobus aquilonaris Zone to the Upper Miocene Lipmanella redondoensis Zone at Site 1150, and 11 zones from the Pleistocene Stylatractus universus Zone to the Middle Miocene Dendrospyris? sakaii Zone at Site 1151. These zones correlate successfully with the studied sequences of many of deep‐sea cores in the Northwest Pacific Ocean and with some sections of onshore Japan. Of 67 important radiolarian bioevents recognized during the study, 29 Pleistocene to Upper Miocene events were directly tied to the geomagnetic polarity time scale through the well‐defined paleomagnetic polarity records, and 21 Upper Miocene events were calibrated based on the diatom biostratigraphy. Of these events, 24 geographically widespread events were selected to test synchroneity and usefulness as time‐horizons within the mid‐to‐high latitude of the Northwest Pacific, involving eight other offshore and onshore sections. Examination showed that most of the zonal boundary events are synchronous within the considered region, and that many diachronous events, most of which are eliminated from the zonal scheme, are unreliable events linked to rare and sporadic occurrences of the species. Radiolarian biostratigraphy of the studied cores clearly indicates three major hiatuses in the Middle Pleistocene, Late Miocene and late Middle Miocene. The latter two hiatuses can be correlated to two global oceanic hiatuses, NH6 and NH3, respectively.  相似文献

The results of determining the paleointensity of the Siberian traps sampled from the Kotui sequence, Truba ravine, Onkuchak Suite, and dated to Permian-Triassic are presented. Most of the H anc values for separate lava flows are significantly lower than the values of the present geomagnetic field at the observation point (approximately 50 μT). This is consistent with the known conclusion that the intensity of the geomagnetic field at the Permian-Triassic boundary was lower by a factor of two to three lower than its present value. We carried out the comparative analysis of the behavior of H an and VDM for two trap sequences (Kotui (the Onkuchak Suite) and Norilsk) from the standpoint of the eruptive pulse hypothesis. In both sections, the average VDM values and their dispersion are similar. For comparison, similar analysis of the VDM behavior is conducted for the Brunhes epoch and Miocene in the interval of 5–10 Ma. It is hypothesized that during the three considered periods, namely, the eruption of the Siberian traps, in the Brunhes epoch, and in Miocene (in the interval of 5–10 Ma), the time behavior of the geomagnetic field was close to a stationary stochastic process.  相似文献

Abstract Fossil pinnipeds in the extinct otariid subfamily Allodesminae are large, relatively highly evolved marine carnivores that became abundant and diverse in Middle Miocene time and were restricted to the North Pacific Ocean. Their record extends from early Middle Miocene through Late Miocene, with records from California, Oregon, Washington, Baja California and Japan. Allodesmines are characterized by extreme sexual dimorphism, a large orbit, retracted orbital margin of the zygomatic arch, a deeply mortised jugal-squamosal junction, wide palate, bulbous cheek tooth crowns, nearly flat tympanic bulla with wrinkled ventral surface, a large tympanohyal fossa, large ear ossicles and deep mandible. Eleven allodesmine species are known (eight of which are named), in at least four genera, and most belong to the typical genus Allodesmus Kellogg, 1922. The earliest and most generalized allodesmine known is from the early Middle Miocene (ca 16 Ma) Astoria Formation in coastal Oregon. The last known records are from Late Miocene rocks (ca 10 Ma) in California and Washington. New taxa proposed here are: the genus Brachyallodesmus Barnes and Hirota, to contain Allodesmus packardi Barnes, 1972; the genus Megagomphos Hirota and Barnes, to contain Allodesmus sinanoensis (Nagao, 1941); the species Allodesmus sadoensis Hirota, (Middle Miocene, Japan); the species Allodesmus megallos Hirota (Middle Miocene, Japan); and the species Allodesmus gracilis Barnes (Middle Miocene, California). Additionally, the genus Atopotarus Downs, 1956, and the species Allodesmus kelloggi Mitchell, 1966, are resurrected. Allodesmines were apparently a rapidly evolving group, and most appear to have been adapted to roles later filled by otariine, dusignathine and imagotariine otariids, and the Phocidae (true seals). They became extinct in Late Miocene time and left no living descendants. Although some of their characters evolved convergently with various living species of the pinniped family Phocidae, Allodesminae are an otariid group and not part of the evolutionary history of Phocidae.  相似文献

A suite of 11 sections through the Oxfordian (Upper Jurassic) strata in the Dorset and Yorkshire regions of England and the Isle of Skye in Scotland yielded magnetic polarity patterns directly calibrated to the ammonite biostratigraphy of the Boreal and the Subboreal faunal provinces. The sections include the leading candidate for the global stratotype (GSSP) for the Callovian–Oxfordian stage boundary. The mean Oxfordian paleomagnetic pole derived from the Dorset and Yorkshire sections is 71.3°N, 172.6°E (δp = 4.2°, δm = 6.1°). The integrated magneto-biostratigraphic scale is consistent with results from the Sub-Mediterranean faunal province and extends the polarity pattern to the base of the Oxfordian. After adjusting for the estimated durations of ammonite subzones from cycle stratigraphy, the magnetostratigraphy confirms models for marine magnetic anomalies M30 through to M37, including some of the short-duration features recorded by deep-tow magnetic surveys in the western Pacific. The Callovian–Oxfordian boundary (base of Quenstedtoceras mariae Zone) occurs in a normal-polarity zone that is correlated to the youngest part of polarity chron M37n of this extension to the M-sequence.  相似文献

The ‘Anthropocene’, as used to describe the interval of recent Earth history during which humans have had an ‘overwhelming’ effect on the Earth system, is now being formally considered as a possible new geological Epoch. Such a new geological time interval (possibly equivalent to the Pleistocene Epoch) requires both theoretical justification as well as empirical evidence preserved within the geological record. Since the geological record is driven by geomorphological processes that produce terrestrial and near‐shore stratigraphy, geomorphology has to be an integral part of this consideration. For this reason, the British Society for Geomorphology (BSG) has inaugurated a Fixed Term Working Group to consider this issue and advise the Society on how geomorphologists can engage with debates over the Anthropocene. This ESEX Commentary sets out the initial case for the formalisation of the Anthropocene and a priori considerations in the hope that it will stimulate debate amongst, and involvement by, the geomorphological community in what is a crucial issue for the discipline. The Working Group is now considering the practical aspects of such a formalization including the relative magnitude problem, the boundary problem and the spatial diachrony of ‘anthropogenic geomorphology’. New paleomagnetic data from shallow-marine sediments of the Ichishi Group suggest a clockwise tectonic rotation of Southwest Japan in the Middle Miocene. Samples have been collected from mud or tuff layers at 17 sites. Stability of remanent magnetization has been examined by using alternating field and thermal demagnetization. The polarity sequence, composed of four normal and seven reversed polarity sites, is correlated to Polarity Epoch 16 (15.2–17.6 Ma), based on micropaleontological assignment of the upper Ichishi Group to Blow's Zone N8. The mean paleomagnetic direction of the 11 sites shows an anomalous declination toward the northeast. This result suggests that Southwest Japan was subjected to a clockwise rotation through 45° since 16 Ma. The clockwise rotation can be explained by the drift of Southwest Japan associated with the spreading of the Japan Sea during the Middle Miocene.  相似文献

Investigation of four sections of Tithonian to Valanginian pelagic limestone have led to refinement of the correlation of calpionellid zones to the magnetic polarity time scale. The correlations are self-consistent but differ slightly from those previously published. The discrepancy with the published correlation from the Bosso section [1] has been resolved by re-evaluation of the biostratigraphy of this sequence. The revised correlation places the base of theChitinoidella Zone in the lower part of polarity chron CM21n, the base of Zone A near the top of CM20n, the A/B boundary at the base of CM18, theB/C boundary in the upper part of CM17, theC/D boundary at the top of CM16 and theD/E boundary at the top of CM14.  相似文献

Power-spectral analyses of the intensity of Earth's magnetic field inferred from ocean sediment cores and archeomagnetic data from time scales of 100 yr to 10 Myr have been carried out. The power spectrum is proportional to 1/f where f is the frequency. These analyses compliment previous work which has established a 1/f2 spectrum for variations at time scales less than 100 yr. We test the hypothesis that reversals are the result of variations in field intensity with a 1/f spectrum which occasionally are large enough to cross the zero intensity value. Synthetic binormal time series with a 1/f power spectrum representing variations in Earth's dipole moment are constructed. Synthetic reversals from these time series exhibit statistics in good agreement with the reversal record, suggesting that polarity reversals may be the end result of autocyclic intensity variations with a 1/f power spectrum.  相似文献
