Results from kinetic laboratory studies of reactions of the carbonate radical anion (CO3–·) with aromatic compounds in aqueous solution at T = 298 K are presented. Data were obtained in using a laser photolysis laser long-path absorption (LP-LPLA) apparatus which was designed for direct time-resolved studies of radical reactions. For the reactions of CO3–· with hydroquinone dimethyl ether (2), methyl anisole (3), benzene (4), p-xylene (5), toluene (6), chlorobenzene (7), nitrobenzene (8), and benzonitrile (9), rate coefficients of k2 = (3.0 ± 0.6)·107 M–1 s–1, k3 = (9.7 ± 1.7)·105 M–1 s–1, k4 = (3.2 ± 0.7)·105 M–1 s–1, k5 = (3.8 ± 0.9)·104 M–1 s–1, k6 = (6.8 ± 2.3)·104 M–1 s–1, k7 = (2.7 ± 0.6)·105 M–1 s–1, k8 = (1.4 ± 0.5)·104 M–1 s–1, and k9 < 1.3·102 M–1 s–1 were obtained. In further studies the effect of temperature on the reactions (2), (4), and (5) has been studied. The kinetic data obtained for the reaction of the carbonate radical anion with aromatic compounds were compared to the corresponding reactions of the hydroxyl radical. Finally, these kinetic data were used within a simple model system to investigate the implications of carbonate radical anion kinetics within water treatment processes. It is shown that the degradation of organic pollutants in ·OH-radical based water treatment may proceed via the CO3–·/HCO radical under certain conditions.  相似文献

The Starunia oil-ozokerite deposit occurs in the Boryslav-Pokuttya Unit of the Carpathian Foredeep, which is the main oil- and gas-bearing part of the Ukrainian Carpathians. Starunia is of great interest in studying the relationship between the magnetic properties of rocks, soils and hydrocarbons due to extensive surface microseeps yielding oil and gas, mineral water, and clay pulp containing hydrocarbons. We identified a local negative magnetic anomaly (30–35 nT) with a width of about 700 m within the MAG1 profile. The magnetic high is associated with the area of the largest mud volcanoes in the Starunia structure. Magnetic susceptibility of the soil was measured on a site with three distinct landscape features: a patch of forest with phaeozem and mass-specific susceptibility (χ) of 20–45 × 10?8 m3/kg for the surface topsoil; an area near the volcano and Nadia-1 well with visible hydrocarbon microseepage at the surface and the topsoil showing no visible evidence of hydrocarbon presence with χ = 20–50 × 10?8 m3/kg; and a patch of lowland with gleysols and χ = 10–20 × 10?8 m3/kg. Hydrocarbon-containing clays and soils from the alluvial sediments of the Velyky Lukavets River and bedrock clays near the Nadia-1 well demonstrated high χ values (up to 250–440 × 10?8 m3/kg).  相似文献

Laguna Melincué is a shallow lake located in Santa Fe Province, Argentina (33°41′27.8″S, 61°31′36.5″W). The catchment area is around 1495 km2 and it is located in the Pampean Plains. It was reduced to 678 km2 by the construction of the San Urbano channel in 1941 and reconditioned in 1977, which was built to avoid floods. The floods are related to some El Niño episodes, with high precipitation events. The lake has been previously studied from different approaches, mainly to understand hydrological and climatic variations, but more multidisciplinary studies are needed to understand its complex hydrological situation. Here we present the first paleomagnetic and rock magnetic studies made on a short sediment core collected from the lake in order to contribute to identifying paleoclimatic proxies and to present the first paleomagnetic results for the site. Rock magnetic analyses suggest that the well-preserved magnetic mineralogy is dominated by pseudo single-domain (titano)magnetite and/or maghemite. The results also indicate that a stable characteristic remanent magnetisation can be isolated and thus the directions of the geomagnetic field may be obtained, providing evidence for the use of this lake for paleomagnetic and paleoenvironmental studies. Changes in magnetic grain size and concentration of magnetic minerals suggest environmental variations and changes in the lake level, which are consistent with historical reports. The paleomagnetic results agree well with Cals3k.3 model for inclination and declination of the geomagnetic field except for the dry period probably due to the fact that the core was extracted near the shore.  相似文献

We investigated the concentration and site occupation of ferric iron (Fe3+) in (Mg,Fe)O to understand the influence of point defects on transport properties such as atomic diffusion, electrical conductivity and viscosity. We conducted Mössbauer spectroscopy of (Mg0.8Fe0.2)O single crystals synthesized at temperatures from 1673 to 2273 K and pressures from 5 to 15 GPa with Re–ReO2 and Mo–MoO2 oxygen fugacity buffers. The isomer shift of the Mössbauer spectra suggests that Fe3+ occupies mostly the tetrahedral site at reduced conditions and both the octahedral and tetrahedral sites at oxidized conditions. We formulate a thermodynamic model of point defect dissolution in (Mg,Fe)O which suggests that unassociated tetrahedral Fe3+ is more stable than unassociated octahedral Fe3+ at high-pressure and low oxygen fugacity due to the effect of configurational entropy. The pressure dependence of Fe3+ concentration indicates a change in the dominant site occupancy of Fe3+: (1) Fe3+ in the tetrahedral site, (2) Fe3+ in the octahedral site, and (3) defect clusters of Fe3+ and cation vacancy, in the order of increasing oxygen fugacity and decreasing pressure. This is in reasonable agreement with previously reported experiments on Fe3+ concentration, Mg–Fe interdiffusivity and electrical conductivity. We consider it plausible that (Mg,Fe)O accommodates Fe3+ in the tetrahedral site down to the lower mantle. Based on our results and available experimental data, we discuss the solubility competition between Fe3+ and protons (H+), and its implications for transport properties in the lower mantle.  相似文献

Deamplification of strong motion and the increase of the effective period of soil deposits are typical nonlinear effects; we seek them in SMART1-array data by applying the horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) technique. The recordings, from four soil and one rock stations, represent 23 earthquakes (ML 4.9–7.0); PGA varies between 20–260 cm/s2. For each station, mean HVSR curves are calculated for two PGA ranges: <75 cm/s2 and >100 cm/s2 (weak and strong motion). At the soil stations, the “weak” (linear) and “strong” (nonlinear) responses are significantly different. Below 1–1.8 Hz, the nonlinear response exceeds the linear one. Above 2 Hz, the nonlinear response drops below the linear one and above 4–6 Hz below unity (deamplification). From 10 to 16 Hz, the two responses converge. One soil site shows significant negative correlation between resonance frequency and ground acceleration. Such behaviour agrees with other empirical studies and theoretical predictions. Our results imply that the HVSR technique is sensitive to ground-motion intensity and can be used to detect and study nonlinear site response.  相似文献

Continuous radon (222Rn) monitoring was conducted at two stations (site A and site B) with different perpendicular distance from the shoreline in Xiangshan Bay, East China Sea. Based on a 222Rn balance model (various sources and sinks of 222Rn in coastal water), the average rate of SGD was estimated to be 0.69 cm/day and 0.23 cm/day for site A and site B, respectively. The results from a nutrient analysis of the groundwater indicate that the associated nutrients fluxes loading through the SGD pathway were 4.27 × 106 mol/day for DIN, 2.24 × 104 mol/day for DIP and 1.82 × 106 mol/day for DSi, respectively, which were comparable to or even higher than the levels observed in the local streams. Therefore, adequate attention should be paid to the importance of SGD as one source of nutrients during the eutrophication control process in this area.  相似文献

Because the intensity and energy spectrum of the cosmic ray flux are affected by atmospheric depth and geomagnetic-field strength, cosmogenic nuclide production rates increase considerably with altitude and to a lesser degree with latitude. The scaling methods used to account for spatial variability in production rates assume that all cosmogenic nuclides have the same altitude dependence. In this study we evaluate whether the production rates of cosmogenic 36Cl, 3He and 21Ne change differently with altitude, which is plausible due to the different threshold energies of their production reactions. If so, nuclide-specific scaling factors would be required.Concentrations of the three cosmogenic nuclides were determined in mafic phenocrysts over an altitude transect between 1000 and 4300 m at Kilimanjaro volcano (3°S). Altitude dependence of relative production rates was assessed in two ways: by determination of concentration ratios and by calculation of apparent exposure age ratios for all nuclide pairs. The latter accounts for characteristics of 36Cl that the stable nuclides 3He and 21Ne do not possess (radioactive decay, high sensitivity to mineral composition and significant contributions from production reactions other than spallation). All ratios overlap within error over the entire transect, and altitudinal variation in relative production rates is not therefore evident. This suggests that nuclide-specific scaling factors are not required for the studied nuclides at this low-latitude location. However, because previous studies have documented anomalous altitude-dependent variations in 3He production at mid-latitude sites, the effect of latitude on cross-calibrations should be further evaluated.We determined cosmogenic 21Ne/3He concentration ratios of 0.1864 ± 0.0085 in pyroxenes and 0.377 ± 0.018 in olivines, agreeing with those reported in previous studies.Despite the absence of independently determined ages for the studied lava surfaces, the consistency in the dataset should enable progress to be made in the determination of the production rates of all three nuclides as soon as the production rate of one of the nuclides has been accurately defined.To our knowledge this is the first time that 36Cl has been measured in pyroxene. The Cl extraction method was validated by measuring 36Cl in co-existing plagioclase phenocrysts in one of the samples.  相似文献

A new approach, combining 15NH4+ isotope dilution and continuous-flow techniques, provided estimates of “actual” and “net” NH4+ flux and sediment NH4+ demand (SAD) at the sediment-water interface (SWI) of sites in the northern Gulf of Mexico (NGOMEX). The sites included a hypoxic site (C6), two sites with intermediate oxygen levels (B7 and F5), and a normoxic site (CT). Control cores without isotope addition and other cores from the same site treated with 15NH4+ labeled overflowing water differentiated between net and actual regeneration flux and actual vs. potential uptake flux of NH4+. Experiments were conducted in 2008 before (July) and after (September) two successive hurricanes (Gustav and Ike) and in January and August, 2009. Actual regeneration was significantly higher than net flux at most sites. Net flux did not differ significantly in most sites/dates, but the actual regeneration, and the actual and potential uptake, showed temporal and spatial variation; the flux at the hypoxic site was more active than non-hypoxic sites. SAD, the difference between potential and actual NH4+ uptake flux, was higher at the hypoxic site than at non-hypoxic sites before and after the hurricanes in 2008 and during the hypoxia season in 2009. SAD related negatively to bottom water DO values. Conclusions: (1) net flux often underestimated actual regeneration, (2) hurricane activity decreased N dynamics, and (3) microbial N limitation status at the hypoxic site related to NH4+ removal processes that were independent of oxygen (e.g., anaerobic heterotrophic uptake or anammox). These results indicate a rather consistent NH4+ demand at the SWI during the hypoxic season and suggest that reduced nitrogen may limit microbial dynamics in the region.  相似文献

Natural and laboratory ESR dose response curves (DRCs) of [AlO4/h]0 and [TiO4/M+]0 were investigated for samples of quartz from the Luochuan loess-palaeosol master section, Chinese Loess Plateau. The natural and laboratory DRCs show a clear divergence above ∼1000 Gy, with much lower D0 values and saturation levels observed for the natural DRCs, which is in agreement with the previous study by Tsukamoto et al. (2018). Young (<15 ka) samples from Luochuan and Jingbian – another site of the Chinese Loess Plateau, together with two modern samples of Chinese loess, were used to investigate the residual signals of [AlO4/h]0 and [TiO4/M+]0 centres. Our results are in line with published studies and show that the significant residual signals corresponding to several tens to hundreds of Gy are present in both Al and Ti centres. These need to be taken into account before laboratory DRC construction. ESR pulse annealing experiments performed on samples irradiated with different doses show an apparent dose-dependent thermal instability of [AlO4/h]0 and [TiO4/M+]0, with the signals for higher doses decaying faster with increasing temperature. We attribute the change in D0 with preheat reported in Tsukamoto et al.2018, as well as the difference between laboratory and natural DRCs, to this apparent dose-dependent thermal instability of the signals. The saturation level of the natural DRC, being the result of reaching the equilibrium between filling of the traps and emptying them due to thermal decay, is therefore additionally affected at higher doses, due to the increased thermal instability. The inability to recreate in the laboratory the same response to irradiation as the one observed in nature questions the accuracy of dating samples beyond ∼1000 Gy.  相似文献

Benthic coarse particulate organic matter (CPOM) was studied between November 92 and December 93 at four sites along the longitudinal gradient of the Agüera stream system (Northern Spain). CPOM was sorted in four main categories: leaves (several species), fruits and seeds, twigs and debris. Headwater site showed higher densities of total CPOM, leaves and twigs than downstream reaches, but no regular longitudinal pattern of change was noticed. The ranges of mean CPOM standing stock at the sampling sites were 20.5–74.1 g AFDW m–2 (site B), 9.9–47.7 g AFDW m–2 (site 5), 4.3–21.4g AFDW m–2 (site 7) and 9.8–37.9 g AFDW m–2 (site 9). The particulate matter at downstream sites was in a more advanced stage of breakdown probably as a result of processing and transport from upstream reaches. Leaves species composition of benthic CPOM clearly reflected the type of riparian vegetation at each site. The timing of inputs and the hydrologic regime appeared to act together influencing temporal dynamics of benthic CPOM. A gradual temporal change in species composition of benthic leaf litter was observed under natural mature deciduous forest: first alder, later chestnut and finally oak.  相似文献

A comprehensive volcanological study of the Albano multiple maar (Alban Hills, Italy) using (i) 40Ar/39Ar geochronology of the most complete stratigraphic section and other proximal and distal outcrops and (ii) petrographic observations, phase analyses of major and trace elements, and Sr and O isotopic analyses of the pyroclastic deposits shows that volcanic activity at Albano was strongly discontinuous, with a first eruptive cycle at 69±1 ka producing at least two eruptions, and a second cycle with two peaks at 39±1 and 36±1 ka producing at least four eruptions. Contrary to previous studies, we did not find evidence of magmatic or hydromagmatic eruptions younger than 36±1 ka. The activity of Albano was fed by a new batch of primary magma compositionally different from that of the older activity of the Alban Hills; moreover, the REE and 87Sr/86Sr data indicate that the Albano magma originated from an enriched metasomatized mantle. According to the modeled liquid line of descent, this magma differentiated under the influence of magma/limestone wall rock interaction. Our detailed eruptive and petrologic reconstruction of the Albano Maar evolution substantiates the dormant state of the Alban Hills Volcanic District. A rock-magnetic and paleomagnetic investigation was carried out on eleven Pleistocene and Pliocene 40Ar/39Ar dated lava flows from the Tepic-Zacoalco rift region in the western sector of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt (TMVB) with the aim of obtaining new paleomagnetic data from the study region and information about the Earth’s magnetic field recorded in these rocks. Rock-magnetic experiments including measurement of thermomagnetic curves, hysteresis parameters and isothermal remanence acquisition curves were carried out to find out the carriers of remanent magnetisation and to determine their domain structure. Although some samples were characterised by the presence of a single ferromagnetic phase (magnetite), in most cases more phases were observed. Analysis of hysteresis parameters showed a mixture of single domain and multidomain particles, the fraction of the latter varying between 40% and 80%. Paleomagnetic results were obtained in all sites, although in 7 sites characteristic remanence directions and remagnetisation circles had to be combined in order to calculate site means. The six Pliocene sites not showing intermediate polarity yielded a paleomagnetic pole (latitude ? = 81.1°, longitude λ = 94.3°) which roughly agrees with the expected one. Paleomagnetic directions do not indicate significant vertical-axis block rotations in the western TMVB area. Reversed polarities observed can be correlated to the Gilbert chron, normal polarities to the Gauss chron or the Brunhes chron and intermediate polarities to the Cochiti-Gilbert or the Gilbert-Gauss transition. The reversed or intermediate polarity magnetisation recorded in one of the sites (542 ± 24 ka) corresponds either to the West Eifel 4 or the West Eifel 5 excursion, while the reversed polarity observed in the other site (220 ± 36 ka) very likely provides new evidence for the Pringle Falls excursion or the event recorded in the Mamaku ignimbrite.  相似文献

A large data base has recently accumulated on the concentrations of helium isotopes in diamonds mined from various regions. It was noted earlier (Ozima et al. (1985) [1]; Lal et al. (1989) [2]) that the frequency distribution of the4He concentrations is a fairly narrow one, whereas that of3He concentrations is a broad one with no pronounced peaks. The ratios 3He/4He, on the other hand show a broad maximum around 2 Ra (Ra equals atmospheric 3He/4He ratio, = 1.40 × 10−6) with a slow decrease over two orders of magnitude on either side. Does this imply that the diamonds sample a wide variety of helium reservoirs having a range of 3He/4He ratios but somehow attain similar4He concentrations? We propose that in a majority of the diamonds studied,4He is primarily due to implantation of radiogenic alpha particles from the host material after emplacement in the crust, usually kimberlite, and that the concentrations of4He in diamonds often get appreciably altered by this process. Thus the4He trapped in the diamond at the time of its crystallization is usually overwhelmed by the implanted helium and the measured 3He/4He ratios do not generally correspond to any “sources” in the mantle. However, the implanted4He resides in the outer 16 μm of the diamond, and the intrinsic4He and 3He/4He ratios in the diamond can be studied if its outer layers are removed.The wider implications of diamond being the “target” material for nuclear reaction products from the host material are discussed. Radiogenic3He produced in the host material is also implanted in the diamond, but this contribution is small on a gross basis. However, since the depth of implantation of3He is greater than that of4He, some of the very high 3He/4He ratios observed in diamonds could be due to the “implantation” of radiogenic3He. The radiogenic reactions in the host material can also contribute to appreciable21Ne in diamonds.  相似文献

Here we investigate the feasibility of using alpha-spectrometric 226Ra methodology to date low U freshwater carbonate deposits (<0.1 μg g−1) by analysing Holocene freshwater travertine deposits from Esanatoglia, Umbro-Marchean Apennines, Central Italy. Previously, such methods have been tested on hydrothermal deposits, which are characterised by high Ra and U. We calculate a 226Ra age estimate of 2.9±0.4 ka (1σ) for Holocene travertine that is in reasonable agreement with archaeological evidence by assuming that the 226Ra initial activity of the Holocene travertine is comparable with that of present-day carbonate deposits in the same area. We also investigate the use of Ba to normalise 226Ra activities. Comparison of age estimates based on Ra methods with ages derived from alpha-spectrometric 230Th/234U isochron techniques for the same co-eval sub-samples indicates that, where only alpha-spectrometric methods are available, the former are likely to be much more useful for Holocene travertine material, especially if there is a significant detrital component.  相似文献

1.7 × 107yr-lived 129I has been positively detected in two natural tellurium ores by activation analysis with the help of low-level sum-coincidence gamma-ray spectrometry. The observed 129I concentrations can be explained as induced by muon reactions on 130Te. The detection of 129I provides for the first time conclusive evidence for the occurrence of natural long-lived muon-induced nuclides. Most of the 129Xe and 131Xe anomalies observed in natural tellurides are best interpreted in terms of reactions induced by muons and their secondary neutrons.  相似文献

During the Soviet-French survey carried out on board of the R.V. Akademik N. Strakhov, between Guadeloupe and Montserrat island in the central Lesser Antilles, evidence of submarine hydrothermal activity was discovered on the southeastern tip of the Shoe-Rock escarpment. The latter is part of a large, 130 km long, transverse structure, the Montserrat-Marie Galante fault, which crosses the Guadeloupe archipelago. Another locus of activity, probably of subdued importance nowadays, is represented by the d'Entrecasteaux dome, a small faulted seamount, located about 25 km to the SW of the former area.The evidence for hydrothermal activity is: (a) a wide range of values of conductive heat flow (q=6–11 mW/m2) and regular vertical variation at some sites with extreme values located close to the two above-mentioned features (average regional value, q = 105 mW/m2, s.d. = 32); (b) occurrence of secondary mineralizations (todorokite, nontronite, etc.) replacing locally the primary matrix of basal upper Pliocene deposits; (c) geochemical anomalies in seawater near the sea bottom, showing enrichment in mantle-derived 3He (δ3He up to 10.2%), correlated with a sharp Zn anomaly (content up to 523 ppb).Further investigations along the submerged segments of the Montserrat-Marie Galante fault should probably lead to other discoveries of hydrothermal venting and/or mineralizations.  相似文献

Sixty female flounder (Platichthys flesus) were collected in Autumn 2011, 15 from each of the following sampling sites: at the mouths of the Douro and Vistula Rivers, and at nearby open sea locations. The aim of the study was to assess several biomarkers in the two geographically distant regions. Hepatic EROD, GST, SOD, GPx, POx, LP; muscular AChE, BChE, LP; and branchial Na+/K+-ATPase were analysed. Moreover, BTI, PY, and three gross morphometric indices were calculated. The results were analysed with t-test, ANOVA, and PCA. Many differences were found between the open sea sites and the river mouths, mainly in Portugal, and between the two rivers. Salinity and pollution seem to be the main factors that affected the biomarkers. Effects of chronic pollution were observed at the river mouths, and an indication of a possible temporary exposure to pollutants was found at the open ocean site in Portugal.  相似文献

A new oxygen isotope record is reported from a stalagmite collected in the Argentarola Cave located on the Tyrrhenian coast of Italy. As shown from observations and numerical modeling of δ18O in modern precipitation, the recorded δ18O variability for this zone is dominated by the amount of precipitation (so-called ‘amount effect’). The δ18O profile measured in the stalagmite is characterized by a prominent negative excursion (ca. 2-3‰) between 180 and 170 kyr BP. This paleoclimatic feature is interpreted as being due to a relatively wet period which occurred during the penultimate glacial period, more precisely, during Marine Isotope Stage 6.5. This pluvial phase is shown to correspond chronologically to the deposition of the sapropel event 6 (S6). Although this particular sapropel event occurred during a cold phase, the δ18O excursion is similar to those corresponding to other sapropels (S4, S3 and S2). The evidence for humid conditions during S6 in the western Mediterranean basin agrees with previous studies based on deep-sea sediment cores. Taken collectively, the data suggest that during sapropel events dilution of ocean surface waters was not restricted to the output of the river Nile but was rather widespread over the entire Mediterranean Sea due to increased rainfall.  相似文献
