Absorption by gas and dust in circumstellar Hii regions within primeval galaxies could seriously depress the far-ultraviolet continuum radiation emitted by primeval galaxies. This effect might account for the failure of Partridge (1974) and Davis and Wilkinson (1974) to detect the redshifted radiation from primeval galaxies at optical and near-infrared wavelengths. A primeval galaxy becomes very bright only during the final stages of contraction. Provided that dust can form by the time the primeval galaxy reaches peak luminosity, a significant fraction of the stellar far-ultraviolet radiation is converted into far-infrared. Thus an appropriate spectral region to search for the redshifted integrated background from primeval galaxies lies between 350 , where the 2.7 K microwave background radiation becomes important, and 150 , where other extragalactic discrete sources, such as nearby galactic nuclei, may contribute. The expected IR flux is calculated with Kaufman's (1975) model for the star formation rate in the contracting galaxy. Letz p be the redshift andT g the grain temperature when the primeval galaxy becomes very bright. Unlessz p10 orT g is fairly high, the intensity of the far-infrared radiation from primeval galaxies would be dominated by the high frequency tail of the 2.7 K microwave background. On the other hand, if dust is unimportant, we determine the spectral energy distribution of a primeval galaxy emitted in the range 912 Å to 2050 Å; we find that the luminosities are not very sensitive to the dependence of effective temperatures on metal abundance.  相似文献

The numerical method for obtaining the luminosity-dependent evolution function of radio sources is presented and applied to the flat spectrum radio sources selected at 5 GHz.The method constructed on the basis of the iterative one given by Robertson, which requires assuming a specific type of the searched function enables one to obtain the evolution function of sources with radio flux densityS 5.01 mJy.The influence of the shape of the local RLF, of the luminosity distributionN(P) and of the spectral index function on the resulting evolution function is investigated. The results presented show that the luminosity dependence of the evolution function of flat-spectrum radio sources is significant and should not be neglected. The obtained evolution function, which allows one to reproduce the source counts curve, the redshift distribution, and the spectral index distribution, may exhibit the redshift cut-off at z03.  相似文献

For a sample of 8156 emission-line galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 4 (SDSS DR4), we have determined the current star formation rates (SFR) from three parameters: the Hα luminosity of H II regions corrected for the aperture and interstellar extinction (N = 7006 galaxies), the far-infrared luminosity (IRAS data, N = 350), and the monochromatic luminosity in the radio continuum at ν = 1.4 GHz (NVSS data, N = 475). A Salpeter initial mass function with the range of stellar masses 0.1–100 M was assumed in the SFR FIR calculations. In calculating SFR1.4, we assumed that the fraction of the thermal emission in the total radio continuum emission of the galaxy at 1.4 GHz was 10%. An upper limit for the starburst age has been determined for galaxies with known abundances of heavy elements. We compare our results with those of similar studies for isolated and Markarian H II galaxies.  相似文献

The redshift dependence of spectral index in powerful radio galaxies   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We present and discuss in this paper the rest frame radio spectra (1–25 GHz) of a sample of fourteen radio galaxies atz >2 from the newly defined MRC/1Jy complete sample of 558 radio sources. These galaxies are among the most powerful radio sources known and range in luminosity from 1028-1028·8 watt Hz-1 at 1 GHz. We find that the median rest frame spectral index of this sample of galaxies atz >2 is significantly steeper than that of a matched luminosity sample of 3CRR galaxies which are at a much lower redshift (0.85 <z < 1.7). This indicates that spectral index correlates primarily with redshift, at least in the luminosity range considered here. The difference between the distributions of rest frame spectral curvatures for the two samples does not appear to be statistically significant. We suggest a new explanation for the steeper spectra of radio galaxies at high redshift involving steeper electron energy spectra at injection. Electron energy spectra are expected to steepen in a first-order Fermi acceleration process, at both non-relativistic and relativistic shock fronts, as the upstream fluid velocity decreases. This may well be the case at high redshifts: the hotter and denser circum-galactic medium at high redshifts could result in slower speeds for the hotspot and the jet material behind it. The smaller sizes of radio sources at higher redshifts provide support to this scenario. Since deceased.  相似文献

The most accurate data on galaxy types, corrected apparent magnitudes and redshifts as given in the Sandage-TammanRevised Shapley-Ames catalog are analyzed. It is shown that Sb galaxies of the same luminosity class as M31 and M81 define a narrow Hubble relation withH 0=65 –6 +15 km s–1 Mpc–1.In contrast, Sc galaxies deviate strongly towars higher redshift from a linear, log redshift—apparent magnitude relation. Not all this deviation can be selection effect due to increasing volume sampled at increasing redshift (Malmquist bias). Physical associations of groups of galaxies in theRSA Catalog are used to establish the existence of various amounts of excess (non-velocity) redshifts among Sc and allied types of galaxies.Independent distances fromHi line width — luminosity criterion (Tully-Fisher) are analyzed. It is shown that this criterion gives much smaller distances than redshifts do for galaxies which deviate above the Hubble line. Unless the Tully-Fisher relation gives too small distances for more luminous galaxies, this confirms the excess redshift to be intrinsic to the Galaxy. But it is next demonstrated, that for low redshift galaxies, there is no discrepancy between redshift and Tully-Fisher distance even though there is a wide range of absolute magnitudes. If Tully-Fisher distances are accepted, the onlly alternative to having a Hubble constant which increases strongly with distance is to have a component of the higher redshift Sc's contributed by a non-recessional redshift. Streaming motions would have to be large, increase with distance and be always in the receding sence. It is shown here that the Sc's which deviate most from the Hubble relation and have the largest discrepancies with Tully-Filsher distances lie predominantly in the sky toward very nearby groups of galaxies. If they were at these closer distances the discordant galaxies, mostly ScI's, would have dwarfish physical properties but not so unprecedented as the large sizes which result from redshift distances. Finally the interaction of specific high redshift ScI's with nearby galaxies is presented as an independent proof that ScI's are generally small, low luminosity galaxies. This result furnishes insight into the long standing puzzle of how apparently distant ScI's can interact with nearby galaxies such as in Stephan's Quintet, Seyfert's Sextet and NGC 4151/4156.  相似文献

Data from the H I Parkes All-Sky Survey (HIPASS) of the southern sky in the neutral hydrogen line are used to determine the radial velocities and widths of the H I line for flat spiral galaxies of the Revised Flat-Galaxy Catalog (RFGC) seen edge-on. The sample of 103 flat galaxies detected in HIPASS is characterized by a median radial velocity of +2037 km/sec and a median width of the H I line at the level of 50% of maximum of 242 km/sec. For RFGC galaxies the 50% detection level in HIPASS corresponds to an apparent magnitude B t = 14 m .5 or an angular diameter a = 2.9. The relative number of detected galaxies increases from 2% for the morphological types Sbc and Sc to 41% for the type Sm. The median value of the ratio of hydrogen mass to total mass for RFGC galaxies is 0.079. With allowance for the average internal extinction for edge-on galaxies, <B t< = 0 m .75, the median ratio of hydrogen mass to luminosity, M H I/L B = 0.74 M /L , is typical for late-type spirals. Because of its small depth, HIPASS reveals only a few RFGC galaxies with previously unknown velocities and line widths.  相似文献

I review two observational programs which, together, promise to unravel the detailed astrophysical evolution of normal field galaxies over the last 5–7 Gyr. Systematic ground-based spectroscopy of faint galaxies have revealed an increasing faint end slope for the luminosity function with redshift. The trend is strongest for galaxies undergoing intense star-formation. Deep images taken with the repaired HST can be used to count galaxies as a function of morphological type. Regular "Hubble sequence" galaxies follow the no-evolution prediction, but irregular/peculiar sources have a steeper count slope and provide the excess population. Although the overlap between the spectral and HST samples is currently small, plans to merge similar datasets should reveal the physical explanation for the demise of star formation in faint blue galaxies since z ⋍0.5–1. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

We have analyzed luminosity profiles of E galaxies studied by Strom and Strom in six clusters of galaxies. We have found a relationship between radius, luminosity, and surface brightness for galaxies in each of the clusters. A dependence of the zero point of the relation with the local projected density of galaxies is likewise found:r e proj –0.14 L 0.445 I e –0.413 . This relationship implies (i) that there is not a universal luminosity profile for elliptical galaxies, (ii) the environmental variation of radius is larger than that produced by mergers of galaxies, (iii) distance to a galaxy can be estimated from apparent magnitude, surface brightness, angular size, and apparent local projected density of galaxies.  相似文献

We present the results of a deep 610-MHz survey of the 1 H XMM–Newton / Chandra survey area with the Giant Metre-wave Radio Telescope. The resulting maps have a resolution of ∼7 arcsec and an rms noise limit of 60 μJy. To a 5σ detection limit of 300 μJy, we detect 223 sources within a survey area of 64 arcmin in diameter. We compute the 610-MHz source counts and compare them to those measured at other radio wavelengths. The well-known flattening of the Euclidean-normalized 1.4-GHz source counts below ∼2 mJy, usually explained by a population of starburst galaxies undergoing luminosity evolution, is seen at 610 MHz. The 610-MHz source counts can be modelled by the same populations that explain the 1.4-GHz source counts, assuming a spectral index of −0.7 for the starburst galaxies and the steep spectrum active galactic nucleus (AGN) population. We find a similar dependence of luminosity evolution on redshift for the starburst galaxies at 610 MHz as is found at 1.4 GHz (i.e.  ' Q '= 2.45+0.3−0.4  ).  相似文献

Our HST WFPC2 survey of 110 BL Lac objects, from six complete X-ray-, radio-, and optically-selected catalogs, probes the host galaxies of low-luminosity radio sources in the redshift range 0<z<1.35. The host galaxies are luminous ellipticals, well matched in radio power and galaxy magnitude to FR I radio galaxies. Similarly, the host galaxies of high luminosity quasars occupy the same region of this plane as FR II radio galaxies (matched in redshift). This strongly supports the unification of radio-loud AGN, and suggests that studying blazars at high redshift is a proxy for investigating less luminous (to us) but intrinsically identical radio galaxies, which are harder to find at high z. Accordingly, the difference between low-power jets in BL Lac objects and high-power jets in quasars can then be related to the FR I/FR II dichotomy; and the evolution of blazar host galaxies or their nuclei (jets) should correspond to the evolution of radio galaxies.  相似文献

From the volume-limited Main galaxy sample of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 6 (SDSS DR6), we construct three samples with g–r color bins , labeled S1–S3, to investigate how other properties of galaxies depend on environment at fixed color. For each sample, we measure the local three-dimensional galaxy density in a comoving sphere with radius equal to the distance to the 5th nearest galaxy for each galaxy, select about 5% galaxies and construct the two subsamples at both extremes of density. Our study suggests that the environmental dependence of luminosity is mainly due to the environmental dependence of galaxy color and the correlation between color and luminosity. In addition, we preferentially conclude that concentration index and morphologies are not strongly correlated with local density at fixed color, and that galaxy color is a galaxy property very predictive of the local environment. Because SDSS spectroscopy is incomplete for bright galaxies at very low redshifts, we also use a volume-limited Main galaxy sample with a lower redshift limit z = 0.05, which contains 94,954 galaxies at 0.05 < z < 0.089 with −22.40 < Mr < −20.16, and reach the same conclusions.Due to the bimodality of the u–r color distribution, we classify galaxies as ‘red’ and ‘blue’, respectively, and further subdivide the samples into star-forming galaxies and passive ones using Hα equivalent width, W0(Hα). Results show that color and star formation activity of galaxies are galaxy properties very predictive of the local environment.  相似文献

Based on data from the Two-Micrometer All-Sky Survey (2MASS), we analyzed the infrared properties of 451 Local-Volume galaxies at distances D ≤ 10 Mpc. We determined the K-band luminosity function of the galaxies in the range of absolute magnitudes from ?25m to ?11m. The local luminosity density within 8 Mpc is 6.8 × 108L Mpc?3, a factor of 1.5 ± 0.1 higher than the global mean K-band luminosity density. We determined the ratios of the virial mass to the K-band luminosity for nearby groups and clusters of galaxies. In the luminosity range from 5 × 1010 to 2 × 1013L, the dependence log(M/LK) ∝ (0.27 ± 0.03) log LK with a dispersion of ~0.1 comparable to the measurement errors of the masses and luminosities of the systems of galaxies holds for the groups and clusters of galaxies. The ensemble-averaged ratio, 〈M/LK〉 ? (20–25) M/L, was found to be much smaller than the expected global ratio, (80–90)M/L, in the standard model with Ωm = 0.27. This discrepancy can be eliminated if the bulk of the dark matter in the Universe is not associated with galaxies and their systems.  相似文献

A sample of 41 radio-galaxies with 13.0m corr15.5 has been analyzed to test the angular redshift anisotropy discovered on Sc I galaxies by Rubin, Rubin and Ford. The sample does not present their anisotropy but contains an even more curious distribution of radial velocities which suggests that the Rubin-Ford effect results from an anomalous redshift of light when it travels through clusters of galaxies.  相似文献

82 compact galaxies with measured redshift present in systems containing partly normal galaxies have been found, using Zwicky's Catalogues and Morphological Catalogue. For them the mean residual redshift has been obtained. The chance probability for this result is 0.015. A high frequency of compact galaxies among those with large discrepant redshift is remarked. Relatively compact normal galaxies also reveal a positive mean value of . Redshift is correlated with magnitude in groups and pairs of compact galaxies, this depending in pairs on the linear separation and colours of the components. If a colour difference is present, the bluer member has the larger redshift in general. In contrast with the large luminosity deduced from the redshift for many field compacts, compact galaxies in systems are faint. The majority of the proposed associations between quasars and systems of normal galaxies are shown to be probably physical.  相似文献

The procedure of the construction of a sample of distant (z > 0.3) radio galaxies using NED, SDSS, and CATS databases for further application in statistical tests is described. The sample is assumed to be cleaned from objects with quasar properties. Primary statistical analysis of the list is performed and the regression dependence of the spectral index on redshift is found.  相似文献

We present a statistical analysis of the big blue bump (BBB) feature for a large heterogeneous sample of 95 optically selected and soft X-ray bright, low redshift active galactic nuclei (AGNs). This sample covers a sufficiently broad luminosity range, allowing us to test the luminosity dependence of the spectral energy distribution in the BBB region. Following the works of Zheng et al., Laor et al. and Kriss et al., we introduce the broad band spectral index from 1050 Å to0.5 keV (α UV-SX ), compare its distribution with that of the soft X-ray spectral index (α SX ) obtained by ROSAT PSPC, and find that the two indices have equal average-values within 1 ~ 2σuncertainties, whether in the whole sample, in luminosity divisions or in subsamples. These equalities also have no obvious luminosity dependence. This indicates that a single power law can describe the overall UV toX-ray spectrum in a statistical sense, or the broad band UV to soft X-ray spectrum is the soft X-ray spectral extension on an average. Thus, our results support Laor et al.'s conjecture about the BBB peak aroundFUV 1050 Å from a statistical viewpoint. As we further test whether the equality holds for individual objects within measure errors, χ2 test refuse to accept it. In addition, our statistical results, from the luminosity divisions and on the correlation of spectral indices with luminosity (M B), imply that the luminosity dependence of α UV and α UV-SX is mainly due to absorption in low luminosity AGNs.  相似文献

A radio survey, using the Very Large Array at 20 and 90 cm λ has been carried out in the direction of 46 distant Abell clusters (0.1 ≲ z ≲ 0.3) dominated by a cD galaxy (clusters classified to be Bautz-Morgan I type). A radio source coincident with the cD galaxy was detected in 16 clusters. We find that the radio luminosity function of the cD galaxies at 20cm λ, and below the luminosityP 1.4ghz ≲ 1024.5 W Hz-1, is similar to that of brightest ellipticals in less clustered environments. Above this luminosity, the cDs seem to have a higher probability of becoming radio sources. The effect of optical brightness on radio emission is shown to be the same for the two classes. No significantly large population of very-steep-spectrum sources with spectral index α >1.2 (flux density ∝ frequency) was found to be associated with cD galaxies. A significant negative correlation is found between the radio luminosity of the cD galaxy and the cooling-time of the intra cluster medium near the galaxy. We also present evidence that the probability of radio emission from first-ranked galaxies is dependent upon their location relative to the geometrical centres of clusters and thus related to the morphological class and the evolutionary state of the clusters. We argue that both these effects are primarily caused by the dynamical evolution of these distant clusters of galaxies.  相似文献

An analysis of a sample of OH megamaser galaxies is presented. It is shown that the dependence of LOH on LFIR (far infrared) is not quadratic, as previously assumed, but closer to linear. In megamaser galaxies, LC (radio continuum) LFIR1. Analysis of the data also shows that as the OH emission line width decreases, the absolute values of the pumping efficiency and maser amplification coefficient increase. The radio luminosity of the central component in these galaxies increases with a decrease in the ratio LFIR/LC, whereas the FIR luminosity remains constant. These results will, in all probability, force a reexamination of the questions of pumping and maser emission mechanisms in megamaser galaxies.Translated fromAstrofizika, Vol. 39, No. 3, pp. 417–429, July–September, 1996.  相似文献

A submillimetre survey of the star formation history of radio galaxies   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We present the results of the first major systematic submillimetre survey of radio galaxies spanning the redshift range 1< z <5. The primary aim of this work is to elucidate the star formation history of this sub class of elliptical galaxies by tracing the cosmological evolution of dust mass. Using SCUBA on the JCMT, we have obtained 850-μm photometry of 47 radio galaxies to a consistent rms depth of 1 mJy, and have detected dust emission in 14 cases. The radio galaxy targets have been selected from a series of low-frequency radio surveys of increasing depth (3CRR, 6CE, etc.), in order to allow us to separate the effects of increasing redshift and increasing radio power on submillimetre luminosity. Although the dynamic range of our study is inevitably small, we find clear evidence that the typical submillimetre luminosity (and hence dust mass) of a powerful radio galaxy is a strongly increasing function of redshift; the detection rate rises from ≃15 per cent at z <2.5 to ≳75 per cent at z >2.5, and the average submillimetre luminosity rises at a rate ∝(1+ z )3 out to z ≃4. Moreover, our extensive sample allows us to argue that this behaviour is not driven by underlying correlations with other radio galaxy properties such as radio power, radio spectral index, or radio source size/age. Although radio selection may introduce other more subtle biases, the redshift distribution of our detected objects is in fact consistent with the most recent estimates of the redshift distribution of comparably bright submillimetre sources discovered in blank field surveys. The evolution of submillimetre luminosity found here for radio galaxies may thus be representative of massive ellipticals in general.  相似文献

The IR Caii triplet at 8498, 8542, 8662 Å, relatively easy to observe and measure and free from atmospheric absorption bands, is a powerful tool for the study of the stellar populations in galaxies, provided that we can understand its behaviour with the stellar parameters: effective temperature, surface gravity and metal content. We present here the results of CCD spectroscopic observations for a sample of 86 stars covering a wide range in luminosity, effective temperature and metallicity (from subdwarfs to supergiants and –2.70[F3/H]0.43), in order to establish the dependence of the IR Caii triplet on stellar atmosphere parameters. We do not confirm previous results giving the main dependence on surface gravity. We find instead a bi-parametric dependence on metallicity and surface gravity, and no dependence on effective temperature.  相似文献
