As planetary reflectance measurements are extended into the infrared, the emitted thermal radiation becomes larger than the reflected solar component. This paper describes a method for removal of the thermal component from planetary reflectance measurements and discusses the limitations involved. Examples are shown for the case of lunar observations where the temperature and emissivity are known and for Mercury where it is assumed the temperature and emissivity are unknown.  相似文献

The applicability of the technique of speckle interferometry to the problem of detecting faint planetary and stellar objects around nearby stars is considered. Direct resolution could not be expected to reveal planetary objects, although many faint stellar objects should be detectable with a speckle camera of large dynamic range. The most promising possibilities lie with the approximately 100 nearby visual binaries with separations ?3 arcsec. Continued speckle interferometric observation of these systems could detect perturbations with amplitudes similar to those detectable by an ideal astrometric telescope. A simple scheme for measurement the fringe spacing in the composite spatial frequency power spectrum of the visual binary Eta Orionis indicates that relative separations with accuracies of 0″.002 in each coordinate are attainable. Use as reference stars of faint background stars lying within the isoplanatic patch of a nearby star is also considered.  相似文献

Assuming that the unidimensional distribution function of the photoelectron flux can be determined from plasma line intensity measurement, it is shown that the photoelectron flux distribution is not uniquely determined if additional hypotheses are not made. The limitations of the inversion procedure are shown: in particular, plasma line measurements cannot allow the determination of more than the first two Legendre components of the photoelectron flux. Experimental procedures for this determination are finally reviewed.  相似文献

We analyzed 134 images of Saturn taken by the Hubble Space Telescope between 1991 and 2004. The images cover wavelengths between 231 and 2370 nm in 30 filters. We combined some 10 million calibrated reflectivity measurements into 18,000 center-to-limb curves. We used the method of principal component analysis to find the main latitudinal and temporal variations in Saturn's atmosphere and their spectral characteristics. The first principal variation is a strong latitudinal variation of the aerosol optical depth in the upper troposphere. This structure shifts with Saturn's seasons, but the structure on small scales of latitude stays constant. The second principal variation is a variable optical depth of stratospheric aerosols. The optical depth is large at the poles and small at mid- and low latitudes with a steep gradient in-between. This structure remains essentially constant in time. The third principal variation is a variation in the tropospheric aerosol size, which has only shallow gradients with latitude, but large seasonal variations. Thus, aerosol sizes and their phase functions inferred at a particular season are not representative of Saturn's atmosphere at other seasons. Aerosols are largest in the summer and smallest in the winter. The fourth principal variation is a feature of the tropospheric aerosols with irregular latitudinal structure and fast variability, on the time scale of months. Spherical aerosols do not display the spectral characteristic of that feature. We suspect that variations in the shape of aerosols may play a role. We found a spectral feature of the imaginary index of aerosols, which darkens them near 400 nm wavelength. While we can describe Saturn's variations quite accurately, our presented model of Saturn's average atmosphere is still uncertain due to possible systematic offsets in methane absorption data and limitations of the knowledge about the shape of aerosols. In order to compare our results with those from comparable investigations, which used less than 30 filters, we fit models to spectral subsets of our data. We found very different best-fitting models, depending on the subset of filters, indicating a high sensitivity of results on the spectral sampling.  相似文献

The dominant source of error in VLBI phase-referencing is the troposphere at observing frequencies above 5 GHz. We compare the tropospheric zenith delays derived from VLBI and GPS data at VLBA stations collocated with GPS antennas. The systematic biases and standard deviations both are at the level of sub-centimeter. Based on this agreement, we suggest a new method of tropospheric correction in phase-referencing using combined VLBI and GPS data.  相似文献

We present some refinements of the previously reported magnetic polarity conditions in solar-terrestrial relations. Appropriately selected subsets were used from the longest available data sets, the geomagnetic aa-index and the surface air temperature. The solar corpuscular impacts have conspicuous effects in the tropospheric behaviour. We reported previously a new kind of semi-annual fluctuation and opposite tropospheric responses to the effects coming from different regions of the Sun as well as their dependence on the orientation of the solar main magnetic dipole. It is shown in the present paper that the semi-annual fluctuation governed by shock and fluctuating disturbances (which originate from the lower-latitude solar regions) exhibits sign reversals in consecutive cycles. The effect can be detected only in the absence of recurrent disturbances (coming mainly from the polar regions). This complex phenomenon implies that the corpuscular events may preserve some of their polarity conditions of their specific solar origin even at the Earth's distance, and on the other hand the small-scale structure of the IMF plays an important role in the link between the solar particles and the tropospheric response.  相似文献

In this paper we present the electromagnetic modeling and beam pattern measurements of a 16-elements ultra wideband sparse random test array for the low frequency instrument of the Square Kilometer Array telescope. We discuss the importance of a small array test platform for the development of technologies and techniques towards the final telescope, highlighting the most relevant aspects of its design. We also describe the electromagnetic simulations and modeling work as well as the embedded-element and array pattern measurements using an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle system. The latter are helpful both for the validation of the models and the design as well as for the future instrumental calibration of the telescope thanks to the stable, accurate and strong radio frequency signal transmitted by the UAV. At this stage of the design, these measurements have shown a general agreement between experimental results and numerical data and have revealed the localized effect of un-calibrated cable lengths in the inner side-lobes of the array pattern.  相似文献

We present a numerical analysis of free-space propagation of the beams inside a long-baseline optical/infrared interferometer. Unlike the models of beam propagation used in most previous studies, our analysis incorporates the effects of atmospheric seeing on the wavefronts entering the interferometer. We derive results for the changes in throughput, coherence loss and fringe-detection signal-to-noise ratio arising from diffraction along the propagation path. Our results for conditions of moderate seeing show that although the flux throughput decreases with propagation distance for a given beam diameter, the fringe contrast increases at the same time. In this case it becomes possible for diffraction to increase the signal-to-noise ratio of the fringe measurements. Previous studies have only considered an arrangement where all the apertures in the beam-propagation system have the same diameter. If the light at the end of the propagation path is collected with a fixed size aperture, we find that in many cases the signal-to-noise ratio for fringe detection is maximized when the initial beam diameter is approximately 30 per cent smaller than the final collector diameter. We discuss the implications of our results in the context of future interferometer designs.  相似文献

Analysis of high-spatial-resolution (approximately 0.8 arcsec) methane band and continuum imagery of Neptune's relatively homogeneous Equatorial Region yields significant constraints on (1) the stratospheric gaseous methane mixing ratio (fCH4,s), (2) the column abundances and optical properties of stratospheric and tropospheric hydrocarbon hazes, and (3) the wavelength-dependent single-scattering albedo of the 3-bar opaque cloud. From the center-to-limb behavior of the 7270-angstroms and 8900-angstrom sCH4 bands, the stratospheric methane mixing ratio is limited to fCH4,s < 1.7 x 10(-3), with a nominal value of fCH4,s = 3.5 x 10(-4), one to two orders of magnitude less than pre-Voyager estimates, but in agreement with a number of recent ultraviolet and thermal infrared measurements, and largely in agreement with the tropopause mixing ratio implied by Voyager temperature measurements. Upper limits to the stratospheric haze mass column abundance and 6190-angstroms and 8900-angstroms haze opacities are 0.61 microgram cm-2 and 0.075 and 0.042, respectively, with nominal values of 0.20 microgram cm-2 and 0.025 and 0.014 for the 0.2-micrometer radius particles preferred by the recent Voyager PPS analysis of Pryor et al. (1992, Icarus 99, 302-316). The tropospheric CH4 haze opacities are comparable to that found in the stratosphere, upper limits of 0.104 and 0.065 at 6190 angstroms and 8900 angstroms, respectively, with nominal values of 0.085 and 0.058. This indicates a column abundance less than 11.0 micrograms cm-2, corresponding to the methane gas content within a well-mixed 3% methane tropospheric layer only 0.1 cm thick near the 1.5-bar CH4 condensation level. Constraints on the single-scattering albedos of these hazes include (1) for the stratospheric component, 6190-angstroms and 8900-angstroms imaginary indices of refraction less than 0.047 and 0.099, respectively, with 0.000 (conservative scattering) being the nominal value at both wavelengths, and (2) CH4 haze single-scattering albedos greater than 0.85 and 0.50 at these two wavelengths, with conservative scattering again begin the preferred value. However, conservative scattering is ruled out for the opaque cloud near 3 bars marking the bottom of the visible atmosphere. Specifically, we find cloud single-scattering albedos of 0.915 +/- 0.006 at 6340 angstroms, 0.775 +/- 0.012 at 7490 angstroms, and 0.803 +/- 0.010 at 8260 angstrom. Global models utilizing a complete global spectrum confirm the red-absorbing character of the 3-bar cloud. The global-mean model has approximately 7.7 times greater stratospheric aerosol content then the Equatorial Region. An analysis of stratospheric haze precipitation rates indicates a steady-state haze production rate of 0.185-1.5 x 10(-14) g cm-2 sec-1, in agreement with recent theoretical photochemical estimates. Finally, reanalysis of the Voyager PPS 7500-angstroms phase angle data utilizing the fCH4,s value derived here confirms the Pryor et al. result of a tropospheric CH4 haze opacity of a few tenths in the 22-30 degrees S latitude region, several times that of the Equatorial Region or of the globe. The factor-of-10 reduction in fCH4,s below that assumed by Pryor et al. implies decreased gas absorption and consequently a decrease in the forward-scattering component of tropospheric aerosols.  相似文献

Data series for the same time interval of characteristic solar parameters (sunspot number R; flux at 2.8 GHz), ionospheric parameters (critical frequency of the E-region) and atmospheric parameters (stratospheric and tropospheric temperatures T) have been analysed by the maximum-entropy method, in order to study the occurrence of periodicities in those parameters in the range from 12 to 150 days. Digital filtering of the most pronounced of the detected periods (mainly in the range between 19 to 33 days) shows a similar but not identical feature in the time interval 1974–1978. It is demonstrated that sunspot number and solar radio flux at 2.8 GHz behave in a similar way on the average, and at periods greater than 20 days. Although a number of similar periods occurred in solar, ionospheric and atmospheric parameters, cross-correlation estimations only show a relationship between periods in solar and ionospheric data, but none between solar data and stratospheric and tropospheric temperatures; exception: T (35 km) correlates with R at 12.3 days. Although space geodetic observing systems have been advanced recently to such a revolutionary level that low Earth Orbiting (LEO) satellites can now be tracked almost continuously and at the unprecedented high accuracy, none of the three basic methods for mapping the Earth’s gravity field, namely, Kaula linear perturbation, the numerical integration method and the orbit energy-based method, could meet the demand of these challenging data. Some theoretical effort has been made in order to establish comparable mathematical modellings for these measurements, notably by Mayer-Gürr et al. (J Geod 78:462–480, 2005). Although the numerical integration method has been routinely used to produce models of the Earth’s gravity field, for example, from recent satellite gravity missions CHAMP and GRACE, the modelling error of the method increases with the increase of the length of an arc. In order to best exploit the almost continuity and unprecedented high accuracy provided by modern space observing technology for the determination of the Earth’s gravity field, we propose using measured orbits as approximate values and derive the corresponding coordinate and velocity perturbations. The perturbations derived are quasi-linear, linear and of second-order approximation. Unlike conventional perturbation techniques which are only valid in the vicinity of reference mean values, our coordinate and velocity perturbations are mathematically valid uniformly through a whole orbital arc of any length. In particular, the derived coordinate and velocity perturbations are free of singularity due to the critical inclination and resonance inherent in the solution of artificial satellite motion by using various types of orbital elements. We then transform the coordinate and velocity perturbations into those of the six Keplerian orbital elements. For completeness, we also briefly outline how to use the derived coordinate and velocity perturbations to establish observation equations of space geodetic measurements for the determination of geopotential.  相似文献

We use Cassini far-infrared limb and nadir spectra, together with recent Huygens results, to shed new light on the controversial far-infrared opacity sources in Titan’s troposphere. Although a global cloud of large CH4 ice particles around an altitude of 30 km, together with an increase in tropospheric haze opacity with respect to the stratosphere, can fit nadir and limb spectra well, this cloud does not seem consistent with shortwave measurements of Titan. Instead, the N2-CH4 collision-induced absorption coefficients are probably underestimated by at least 50% for low temperatures.  相似文献

It has been shown that the orbital polarization measurements of the Earth in the spectral range λ > 300 nm do not allow the sets of the Stokes parameters satisfying the homogeneity requirement for the optical properties of the “atmosphere + surface” system to be retrieved. Due to this, the atmospheric and surface contributions cannot be correctly separated and the physical properties of the atmospheric aerosol cannot be determined. This is caused by the optical heterogeneity of the system, the different nature of aerosol above different relief features, and the poorly predictable temporal changes of the optical properties of the “atmosphere + surface” system. Observations at λ < 300 nm are more acceptable, since not only the surface but also the tropospheric layer of the atmosphere, which are both mostly subjected to the effects of horizontal inhomogeneity and temporal variations, become practically invisible due to a high absorption by the ozone layer. Because of this, from the scans along specified latitude zones, one may obtain the quasi-homogeneous dependences of the second Stokes parameter Q(α) (U(α) = 0) suitable for estimating the physical characteristics of the stratospheric aerosol and revealing their horizontal and temporal variations.  相似文献

Hawking radiation effect of Maxwell’s electromagnetic fields in the Kerr-Newman black hole space-time is investigated using two different tortoise coordinate transformations. It has been shown that the new tortoise coordinate transformation produces constant term ξ in the expression of surface gravity and Hawking temperature. If ξ is set to zero, the surface gravity and Hawking temperature will be equal to those obtained from the old tortoise coordinate transformation. This indicates that new transformation is more reliable and accurate. The black body radiant spectrum of photon displays a new spin-rotation coupling effect.  相似文献

The third most abundant species in Titan’s atmosphere is molecular hydrogen with a tropospheric/lower stratospheric mole fraction of 0.001 derived from Voyager and Cassini infrared measurements. The globally averaged thermospheric H2 mole fraction profile from the Cassini Ion Neutral Mass Spectrometer (INMS) measurements implies a small positive gradient in the H2 mixing ratio from the tropopause region to the lower thermosphere (∼950-1000 km), which drives a downward H2 flux into Titan’s surface comparable to the H2 escape flux out of the atmosphere (∼2 × 1010 cm−2 s−1 referenced to the surface) and requires larger photochemical production rates of H2 than obtained by previous photochemical models. From detailed model calculations based on known photochemistry with eddy, molecular, and thermal diffusion, the tropospheric and thermospheric H2 mole fractions are incompatible by a factor of ∼2. The measurements imply that the downward H2 surface flux is in substantial excess of the speculative threshold value for methanogenic life consumption of H2 (McKay, C.P., Smith, H.D. [2005], Icarus 178, 274-276. doi:10.1016/j.icarus.2005.05.018), but without the extreme reduction in the surface H2 mixing ratio.  相似文献
