Stegosaurus armatus Marsh 1877, based on a partial tail and a very large dermal plate from the Morrison Formation (Late Jurassic) of Morrison, Wyoming, USA, is a nomen dubium. Valid Morrison stegosaur species (with possible autapomorphies, dermal “armor” considered if present), with most holotypes consisting of a disarticulated partial postcranial skeleton at most, include: Hypsirhophus discurus Cope 1878 (characters of incomplete vertebrae, a dorsal and a caudal; Garden Park near Cañon City, Colorado); Stegosaurus ungulatus Marsh 1879 (half skeleton with partial skull; three pairs of small flat dermal spines adjacent to terminal tail spikes; Quarry 12, Como Bluff near Como station, Wyoming; syntype is holotype of S. duplex Marsh 1887, half skeleton lacking armor; Quarry 11, Como Bluff); Diracodon laticeps Marsh 1881b (just partial dentaries with few teeth, diastema between predentary and tooth 1; Quarry 13, Como Bluff); Stegosaurus sulcatus Marsh 1887 (pair of ?tail spikes with greatly enlarged base; Quarry 13, Como Bluff); S. longispinus Gilmore 1914 (characters of distal caudal vertebrae, tail spikes: two pairs, sub-equal bases, transversely flattened, very elongate; Alcova, Wyoming); and Hesperosaurus mjosi Carpenter, Miles &; Cloward, 2001 (?Stegosaurus mjosi; partial articulated skeleton with skull, no limbs, several plesiomorphic and autapomorphic characters, dorsal plates longer than tall; Wyoming). However, the well known valid nominal species, S. stenops Marsh 1887 (12 autapomorphies, three alternating flat plates adjacent to terminal tail spikes; Garden Park), is based on a virtually complete articulated skeleton lacking only the terminal caudal vertebrae and first pair of tail spikes. It includes 17 dermal plates, is still exposed as preserved on the block, and is the current basis for Stegosaurus. The International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) will be petitioned to designate S. stenops Marsh 1887 as the new type species of Stegosaurus Marsh 1877 in order to conserve Stegosauria Marsh 1877 and Stegosauridae Marsh 1880 (also Stegosauroidea, Stegosaurinae).  相似文献

New and nearly complete cranial remains of Pholidosaurus purbeckensis are described on the basis of specimens recovered from the Berriasian locality of Cherves-de-Cognac, France. Two skulls, associated mandibles and a set of dorsal osteoderms are available and allow a refinement of the anatomy of the genus, known otherwise from coeval deposits in Germany and England. Because of its longirostrine morphology, convergent with other crocodylomorph lineages, the phylogenetic relationships of Pholidosaurus are likely to be affected by Long Branch Attraction problems. Various tests of removing/excluding longirostrine lineages confirm that Dyrosauridae have a labile position and that their affinities with Pholidosauridae are weakly supported. Results from comparative anatomy and phylogenetic analyses recover Pholidosaurus as the basalmost member of Pholidosauridae, a group closely related to Goniopholididae. Pholidosaurus is recovered together with abundant remains of Goniopholis and with more limited remains of Theriosuchus. The paleoecology of Pholidosaurus and more generally, of Pholidosauridae, is discussed.  相似文献

A specimen collected from the Lower Cretaceous Yixian Formation of western Liaoning, China, represents a new genus and species of troodontid theropod. The new taxon is named and described on the basis of the holotype and the only known specimen, which comprises an articulated skeleton with the presacral vertebral, shoulder girdle and forelimbs missing as preserved. Diagnostic features of the new species include nasals that are sinusoid in lateral view, absence of a passage connecting the antorbital and maxillary fenestrae, relatively large teeth, plate-like chevrons forming a band along most of the length of the tail, and a long neck between the femoral head and shaft. The temporal constraints of the three paravian groups (Troodontidae, Dromaeosauridae and Aves) combined with the character distributions among the earliest known troodontids indicate a rapid evolution at the base of the Troodontidae.  相似文献

The S and O isotopic composition of dissolved SO4, used as a tracer for SO4 sources, was applied to the water of the Llobregat River system (NE Spain). The survey was carried out at 30 sites where surface water was sampled on a monthly basis over a period of 2a. The concentration of dissolved SO4 varied from 20 to 1575 mg L−1. Sulphur isotopic compositions clustered in two populations: one – 93% of the samples – had positive values with a mode of +9‰; the other had negative values and a mode of −5‰. Data for δ18OSO4 showed a mean value of +11‰, with no bi-modal distribution, though lower values of δ18O corresponded to samples with negative δ34S. These values can not be explained solely by the contribution of bedrock SO4 sources: that is, sulphide oxidation and the weathering of outcrops of sulphates, though numerous chemical sediments exist in the basin. Even in a river with a high concentration of natural sources of dissolved SO4, such as the Llobregat River, the δ34S values suggest that dissolved SO4 is controlled by a complex mix of both natural and anthropogenic sources. The main anthropogenic sources in this basin are fertilizers, sewage, potash mine effluent and power plant emissions. Detailed river water sampling, together with the chemical and isotopic characterisation of the main anthropogenic inputs, allowed determination of the influence of redox processes, as well as identification of the contribution of natural and anthropogenic SO4 sources and detection of spatial variations and seasonal changes among these sources. For instance, in the Llobregat River the input of fertilisers is well marked seasonally. Minimum values of δ34S are reported during fertilization periods – from January to March – indicating a higher contribution of this source. The dual isotope approach, δ34S and δ18O, is useful to better constrain the sources of SO4. Moreover, in small-scale studies, where the inputs are well known and limited, the mixing models can be enhanced and the contribution of the different sources can be quantified to some extent.  相似文献

A supernova explosion in a close binary system in which one of the components is a compact magnetized object (neutron star or white dwarf) can form a narrow “tail” with length l t ~109 cm, width h t ~108 cm, and magnetic field B t ~106, due to the resulting shock wave flowing around the magnetosphere of the compact object. The energy released by the reconnection of magnetic field lines in this tail can accelerate electrons to relativistic speeds (γ≈104), creating the conditions required for powerful synchrotron radiation at energies from hundreds of keV to several MeV, i.e., for a gamma-ray burst (GRB). The duration of this radiation will depend on the power of the shock that forms during the supernova. If the shock is not sufficiently powerful to tear off the magnetosphere tail from the compact object, the duration of the GRB will not exceed l t /V A ≤1 s, and the conditions necessary for an “afterglow” at softer energies will not arise. If the shock is more powerful, the tail can be torn from the magnetosphere, forming a narrow ejection, which is perceived in its relativistic motion toward the observer(Γ~104) as an afterglow whose duration grows from tens of seconds at gamma-ray energies to tens of days in the optical. This may explain why afterglows are observed only in association with long GRBs (T 90>10 s). Very short GRBs (T 90<0.1 s) may be local, i.e., low-power, phenomena occurring in close pairs containing compact, magnetized objects, in which there is again an interaction between the magnetosphere of the compact object and a shock wave, but the shock is initiated by a flare on the companion, which is a red-dwarf cataclysmic variable, rather than by a supernova.  相似文献

The systematics of elasmosaurids are not well resolved partially because of the scarcity of well-preserved skull material. Among Weddellian elasmosaurids, one exception to this is the holotype of Tuarangisaurus keyesi from upper Campanian–lower Maastrichtian levels of the Maungataniwha Sandstone Member of the Tahora Formation, Mangahouanga Stream, inland Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. The material preserves an almost complete cranium and mandible. This material is re-described here, based on new observations and digital reconstruction of the internal anatomy. The result adds one new autapomorphy to the diagnosis of the taxon: ectopterygoid with large boss on the ventral surface and a posteriorly directed process. Additionally new features are recorded: presence of stapes; pterygoid overlapping the vomer, medial sulcus on the dorsal surface of the vomer, parasphenoid–basisphenoid complex covering the ventral surface of the body of the basioccipital. The presence of stapes in Tuarangisaurus keyesi is surprising as they were previously considered absent among elasmosaurids. Phylogenetic analysis indicates a clear elasmosaurid affinity, although there is low resolution within the Elasmosauridae. The previously proposed close relationship with the early Aptian Callawayasaurus colombiensis is rejected.  相似文献

Molecular based equations of state (EOS) are attractive because they can take into account the energetic contribution of the main types of molecular interactions. This study models vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) and PVTx properties of the H2O-CO2 binary system using a Lennard-Jones (LJ) referenced SAFT (Statistical Associating Fluid Theory) EOS. The improved SAFT-LJ EOS is defined in terms of the residual molar Helmholtz energy, which is a sum of four terms representing the contributions from LJ segment-segment interactions, chain-forming among the LJ segments, short-range associations and long-range multi-polar interactions. CO2 is modeled as a linear chain molecule with a constant quadrupole moment, and H2O is modeled as a spherical molecule with four association sites and a dipole moment. The multi-polar contribution to Helmholtz energy, including the dipole-dipole, dipole-quadrupole, and quadrupole-quadrupole contribution for H2O-CO2 system, is calculated using the theory of Gubbins and Twu (1978). Six parameters for pure H2O and four parameters for pure CO2 are needed in our model. The Van der Waals one-fluid mixing rule is used to calculate the Lennard-Jones energy parameter and volume parameter for the mixture. Two or three binary parameters are needed for CO2-H2O mixtures, which are evaluated from phase equilibrium data of the binary system. Comparison with the experimental data shows that our model represents the PVT properties of CO2 better than other SAFT EOS without a quadrupole contribution. For the CO2-H2O system, our model agrees well with the vapor-liquid equilibrium data from 323-623 K. The average relative deviation for CO2 solubility (expressed in mole fraction) in water is within 6%. Our model can also predict the PVTx properties of CO2-H2O mixtures up to 1073 K and 3000 bar. The good performance of this model indicates that: (1) taking account of the multi-polar contribution explicitly improves the agreement of calculated properties with experimental data at high temperatures and high pressures, (2) the molecular-based EOS with just a few parameters fit to data in the sub-critical region can predict the thermodynamic properties of fluids over a wide range of P-T conditions.  相似文献

The origin of the genus Bos is a debated issue. From ∼ 0.5 Ma until historic times, the genus is well known in the Eurasian large mammal assemblages, where it is represented by Bos primigenius. This species has a highly derived cranial anatomy that shows important morphological differences from other Plio-Pleistocene Eurasian genera of the tribe Bovini such as Leptobos, Bison, Proamphibos-Hemibos, and Bubalus. The oldest clear evidence of Bos is the skull fragment ASB-198-1 from the middle Pleistocene (∼ 0.6-0.8 Ma) site of Asbole (Lower Awash Valley, Ethiopia). The first appearance of Bos in Europe is at the site of Venosa-Notarchirico, Italy (∼ 0.5-0.6 Ma). Although the origin of Bos has traditionally been connected with Leptobos and Bison, after a detailed anatomical and morphometric study we propose here a different origin, connecting the middle Pleistocene Eurasian forms of B. primigenius with the African Late Pliocene and early Pleistocene large size member of the tribe Bovini Pelorovis sensu stricto. The dispersal of the Bos lineage in Western Europe during middle Pleistocene times seems to coincide with the arrival of the Acheulean tool technology in this continent.  相似文献

Soils and ore samples influenced by mining and metallurgical activity were collected in ultramafic soils (UM) complexes of Barro Alto and Niquelândia, in order to determine the contribution of each Ni bearing phases to the total exchangeable pool of Ni, and to point out if this pool was affected by anthropic activities. For this purpose, the IEK-model previously developed by the group (Zelano et al., submitted) was applied, on the basis of IEK experiments performed on pure typical Ni scavengers (serpentines, chlorite, smectite and iron oxydes) from ultramafic systems. For each typical scavenger, this model describes the percentage of Ni associated to exchangeable pool(s) as well as their corresponding kinetic constant(s) of exchange. The mineralogical composition of soil and ore samples and Ni solid speciation were first determined, and the IEK-model was applied on these bases. In almost all samples, an important contribution of serpentine to Ni exchangeable pool was highlighted, ranging between 10% and 45%. The important amount of organic matter (OM) in one of the studied soil samples, allowed to extrapolate generic OM ENi and k parameters, which were introduced in the IEK-model to improve its predictive capability. Obtained results provided evidences of how even a small content (3 wt%) of organic carbon (OC), can represent an important contribution of OM to the total ENi pool (60%). In the investigated ore samples, up to the 60% of ENi was attribute to smectite, responsible for fast ENi pool kinetic evolution. In addition, the model highlighted the role of the Fine Black Ash (FBA), by-products of the pyrometallurgical activity, detected into a soil sample, that is responsible for the 15% of ENi. This approach allowed to determine, for the first time, the relative contribution of each Ni bearing phase to the total exchangeable pool, in terms of concentration and kinetics.  相似文献

Bones in the fossil record sometimes exhibit unusual structures that can be attributed to pathologies, taphonomic alterations, or morphological variation. The goal of this work is to describe three bone abnormalities present in the type specimen of Bonitasaura salgadoi from the Cretaceous of north Patagonia, Argentina. The studied material corresponds to a left femur, a left metatarsal III, and a right prezygapophysis of a mid-caudal vertebra. Macroscopic and/or histological examinations were conducted, and a discussion concerning the origin of each abnormality is provided. The results of this study suggest that the anomalous structures are pathologies. In the femur, an osteoblastic tumor was identified by the presence of a large outgrowth of ovoid appearance with a spiculated microstructural pattern. The metatarsal III shows an enthesophyte (or bone spur) based on its location, shape and growth in parallel to the long axis of the bone element. Finally, the abnormal tissue observed in the prezygapophysis of the caudal vertebra was determined to be an infection by the presence of reactive new bone associated with a local widening of the subperiosteal margin and a sinus of drainage. This is the first report of multiple pathologies in a single specimen of a titanosaur, and it provides new insights about paleopathologies in sauropod dinosaurs.  相似文献

A new species of hybodontid shark is described for the Lower Cretaceous of Brazil. The type specimen is derived from pre-Aptian strata of Malhada Vermelha Formation, Lima Campos Basin (Ceará State, northeastern Brazil), with referred material from the Missão Velha Formation of Araripe Basin, northeastern Brazil. The new taxon differs from other Planohybodus species by the presence of a stronger tooth ornamentation characterized by simple, usually non-branching cristae that nearly reach the apex of the main cusp as well as distinctly divergent lateral cusplets. In addition, certain North-American specimens formerly attributed to Hybodus are identified as Planohybodus. The new species presented herein, in addition to the North-American remains, represents an important contribution to the knowledge of the distribution of Planohybodus, expanding the geographic range of the genus to South and North America in the Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous.  相似文献

Anisotropy of electrical conductivity in the lower mantle, presumably caused by phase change of dielectric magnesiowustite, can be estimated from geomagnetic records of the globally distributed geomagnetic array. The components of the conductivity tensor corresponding to the tangential components of the geomagnetic field are obtained from the magnetic mode alone recorded on the surface. Inversion by the perturbation method is applied to monthly means of geomagnetic variations along the X, Y, and Z components for the period from 1920 to 2009, borrowed from the World Monthly Means Database. The anisotropy contribution is expressed as corrections to the conductivity tensor components. The contribution of anisotropy to induction responses becomes notable for geomagnetic variations with at least decadal periods and increases with the period length.  相似文献

The exquisite transitional fossil Tetrapodophis – described as a stem-snake with four small legs from the Lower Cretaceous of Brazil – has been widely considered a burrowing animal, consistent with recent studies arguing that snakes had fossorial ancestors. We reevaluate the ecomorphology of this important taxon using a multivariate morphometric analysis and a reexamination of the limb anatomy. Our analysis shows that the body proportions are unusual and similar to both burrowing and surface-active squamates. We also show that it exhibits striking and compelling features of limb anatomy, including enlarged first metapodials and reduced tarsal/carpal ossification – that conversely are highly suggestive of aquatic habits, and are found in marine squamates. The morphology and inferred ecology of Tetrapodophis therefore does not clearly favour fossorial over aquatic origins of snakes.  相似文献

The Early Cretaceous lizard Yabeinosaurus was one of the first taxa described from the now famous Jehol Biota of northeast China. Misinterpreted for more than 60 years and misclassified as a gekkotan based on juvenile specimens, it is now recognised to be a large, well-ossified lizard with an extended period of skeletal maturation. Here we describe two additional complete specimens of Yabeinosaurus that provide new information on skeletal morphology, most notably of the skull, pectoral girdle, and tail. Both specimens also preserve gut contents, showing that large individuals took vertebrate prey, including fish. A more complete understanding of Yabeinosaurus permits a review of the type specimen of Yabeinosaurus youngi. Skull traits used to distinguish Y. youngi from Yabeinosaurus tenuis are invalid but, as noted by Hoffstetter, the two species differ markedly in limb proportions. Attribution of Young’s specimen to Yabeinosaurus is equivocal, but could potentially extend the temporal range of the lineage into the Jurassic. A new phylogenetic analysis based on a morphological data set places Yabeinosaurus on the stem of Scleroglossa, as the sister taxon of the contemporaneous Japanese lizard Sakurasaurus.  相似文献

The undrained response of massive caisson foundations to combined horizontal, vertical and moment loading is parametrically investigated through a series of 3D finite element analyses. The parameters are: (a) the embedment ratio (D/B), (b) the factor of safety against initial vertical loading (FSV) and (c) the ratio of the overturning moment to the horizontal force applied at the top of the caisson (M/Q). Emphasis is given on: (i) the identification of all possible failure mechanisms in MQN space, (ii) the developed stress distributions along the caisson walls for various load levels up to complete failure conditions. The results are then used as a feedback for calibrating the parameters of a generalized four-type spring model, originally proposed by Gerolymos and Gazetas (2006), through a genetic algorithm-based optimization procedure. The predictions of the Winkler model compare very well with the FE results, not only at the local response level (in terms of stress distributions along the caisson shafts), but at a global response level (in terms of force–displacement curves and M–Q–N failure envelopes at the top of the caisson) as well. Contrary to established lateral soil resistance theories, it is shown that both the ultimate horizontal soil reaction and resisting moment per unit depth do not solely depend on the strength properties of soil and geometry of the caisson but are also functions of the applied load ratio M/Q and initial soil yielding due to vertical loading. Interesting conclusions are also drawn regarding the transition from the elastic to the ultimate limit state (hardening). Quantifying through analytical expressions the contribution of each of the two basic lateral resisting mechanisms to the response of the caisson, a classification method for embedded foundations is then proposed. The capabilities of the Winkler model are further demonstrated through comparison with FE analysis of the caisson cyclic lateral response.  相似文献

The electric field gradient (EFG) in Mg2SiO4 is calculated on the basis of the extended point ion model, including the local term of the overlap contribution. The agreement with experimental data deduced from the quadrupole coupling constants and principal axes at the Mg sites is quite good. The results of the present calculation exhibit a small overlap contribution to the EFG at M1 and a clearly bigger one at M2, whereas the lattice contribution to the EFG at M1 and M2 is reversed. The distinct overlap effects are assumed to be due to the particular Mg2SiO4 crystal structure and the different point symmetry at M1 and M2. The oxygen polarizability and charge used to calculate the EFG tensor were found to be smaller than the theoretical polarizability and formal charge, respectively. The sign of the Mg quadrupole coupling constants at M1 and M2, which has not been determined experimentally, results from the EFG calculation as positive.  相似文献

Stability analysis generally relies on the estimate of failure probability P. When information is scarce, incomplete, imprecise or vague, this estimate is imprecise. To represent epistemic uncertainty, possibility distributions have shown to be a more flexible tool than probability distributions. The joint propagation of possibilistic and probabilistic information can rely on more advanced techniques such as the classical random sampling of the cumulative probability distribution F and of the intervals from the possibility distributions π. The imprecise probability P is then associated with a random interval, which can be summarized by a pair of indicators bounding it. In the present paper, we propose a graphical tool to explore the sensitivity on these indicators. This is conducted by means of the contribution to sample probability of failure plot based on the ordering of the randomly generated levels of confidence associated with the quantiles of F and to the α-cuts of π. This presents several advantages: (1) the contribution of both types of uncertainty, aleatoric and epistemic, can be compared in a unique setting; (2) the analysis is conducted in a post-processing step, i.e. at no extra computational cost; (3) it allows highlighting the regions of the quantiles and of the nested intervals which contribute the most to the bounds of P. The method is applied on two case studies (a mine pillar and a steep slope stability analysis) to investigate the necessity for extra data acquisition on parameters whose imprecision can hardly be modelled by probabilities due to the scarcity of the available information (respectively the extraction ratio and the cliff geometry).  相似文献
