A new model for gamma-ray pulsars presented by Higgins & Henriksen is applied to the cases of the seven known gamma-ray pulsars. Those pulsars that are not presently observed in gamma-rays, but are candidates for observation by the next generation of gamma-ray telescopes, are discussed. The case of millisecond pulsars is discussed, and it is shown that these objects should radiate at detectable levels, in opposition to the predictions of other gamma-ray pulsar models.  相似文献

We present a modified scenario of gamma-ray emission from pulsars within the framework of polar cap models. Our model incorporates the possible acceleration of electron–positron pairs created in magnetospheres, and their subsequent contribution to the gamma-ray luminosity L γ. It also reproduces the empirical trend in L γ for seven pulsars detected with Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory ( CGRO ) experiments. At the same time it avoids basic difficulties faced by theoretical models when confronted with observational constraints.   We show that the classical and millisecond pulsars form two distinct branches in the L γ— L sd diagram (where L sd is the spin-down luminosity). In particular, we explain why the millisecond pulsar J0437−4715 has not been detected with any of the CGRO instruments despite its very high position in the ranking list of spin-down fluxes (i.e. L sd/ D 2, where D is a distance). The gamma-ray luminosity predicted for this particular object is about one order of magnitude below the upper limit set by EGRET.  相似文献

The EGRET telescope aboard the NASA Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory ( CGRO ) has repeatedly detected 3EG J1835+5918, a bright and steady source of high-energy gamma-ray emission which has not yet been identified. The absence of any likely counterpart for a bright gamma-ray source located 25° off the Galactic plane initiated several attempts of deep observations at other wavelengths. We report on counterparts in X-rays on a basis of a 60-ks ROSAT HRI image. In order to conclude on the plausibility of the X-ray counterparts, we reanalysed data from EGRET at energies above 100 MeV and above 1 GeV, including data up to CGRO observation cycle 7. The gamma-ray source location represents the latest and probably the final positional assessment based on EGRET data. We especially address the question of flux and spectral variability, here discussed using the largest and most homogeneous data set available at high-energy gamma-rays for many years. The results from X-ray and gamma-ray observations were used in a follow-up optical identification campaign at the 2.2-m Guillermo Haro Telescope at Cananea, Mexico. VRI imaging has been performed at the positions of all of the X-ray counterpart candidates, and spectra were taken where applicable. The results of the multifrequency identification campaign toward this enigmatic unidentified gamma-ray source are given, especially on the one object which might be associated with the gamma-ray source 3EG J1835+5918. This object has the characteristics of an isolated neutron star and possibly of a radio-quiet pulsar.  相似文献

The fields of eight X-ray sources in the Magellanic Clouds believed to be Be/X-ray binaries have been searched for possible Be-star counterparts. BVR c and H α CCD imaging was employed to identify early-type emission stars through colour indices and H α fluxes. Spectroscopy of five sources confirms the presence of H α emission in each case. Based on the positional coincidence of emission-line objects with the X-ray sources, we identify Be-star counterparts to the ROSAT sources RX J0032.9-7348, RX J0049.1-7250, RX J0054.9-7226 and RX J0101.0-7206, and to the recently discovered ASCA source AX J0051-722. We confirm the Be star nature of the counterpart to the HEAO1 source H0544-66. In the field of the ROSAT source RX J0051.8-7231 we find that there are three possible counterparts, each showing evidence for H α emission. We find a close double in the error circle of the EXOSAT source EXO 0531.1-6609, each component of which could be a Be star associated with the X-ray source.  相似文献

We present a detailed analysis of the high-energy gamma-ray source 2EG J0008+7307. The source has a steady flux and a hard spectrum, softening above 2 GeV. The properties of the gamma-ray source are suggestive of emission from a young pulsar in the spatially coincident CTA 1 supernova remnant, which has recently been found to have a non-thermal X-ray plerion. Our 95 per cent uncertainty contour around the > 1 GeV source position includes the point-like X-ray source at the centre of the plerion. We propose that this object is a young pulsar and is the most likely counterpart of 2EG J0008+7307.  相似文献

We present a case study of the relevance of the radially pulsational instability of a two-temperature accretion disk around a neutron star to anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs). Our estimates are based on the approximation that such a neutron star disk with mass in the range of 10^-6-10^-5M⊙ is formed by supernova fallback. We derive several peculiar properties of the accretion disk instability: a narrow interval of X-ray pulse periods; lower X-ray luminosities; a period derivative and an evolution time scale. All these results are in good agreement with the observations of the AXPs.  相似文献

It is usually assumed that pulsar glitches are caused by the large-scale unpinning of superfluid neutron vortices in the solid crust of a neutron star and that vortex motion relative to the crust is highly dissipative at low velocities, owing to the excitation of long-wavelength Kelvin waves. The force per unit length acting on a vortex as a result of Kelvin wave excitation has been calculated for a polycrystalline structure using the free-vortex Green function. An approximate upper limit for the maximum pinning force has been obtained which, for the form of structure anticipated, is many orders of magnitude too small for consistency with the observed size and frequency of glitches. The corollary is that glitches do not originate in the crust: the necessary pinning may be given by the interaction between neutron and proton vortices in the liquid core of the star.  相似文献

We describe the possible electromagnetic signals expected from the magnetospheric interactions of a neutron star binary prior to merger. We find that both radio and X-ray signals of detectable strength are possible. We discuss possible links with the phenomenon of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and describe the prospects for direct detection of these signals in searches for radio and X-ray transients.  相似文献

We report on X-ray emission properties of the Crab pulsar(PSR B0531+21) using observations by Insight-HXMT during its first year after launch. We obtained high signal-to-noise profiles in the X-ray energy band 11–250 keV. We have confirmed an increase in the flux ratio of the second peak over the main peak with increasing energy, consistent with other missions. The separation of the two peaks shows no significant trend with increasing energy. The phase-averaged spectrum, fitted by a logpar model, and the phase-resolved spectra of the Crab pulsar, fitted by a powerlaw in the different energy bands of HXMT, are consistent with RXTE and NuSTAR in that photon indices evolve as a function of phase as well as a function of energy, contributing to a broadband modeling.  相似文献

Optical and X-ray observations are presented here of a newly reported X-ray transient system in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The data reveal many previously unknown X-ray detections of this system and clear evidence for a 45.99 d binary period. In addition, the optical photometry shows recurring outburst features at the binary period which may be well indicative of the neutron star interacting with a circumstellar disc around a Be star.  相似文献

We examine the spectra of the persistent emission from anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs) and their variati on with the spin-down rate Ω. Based onan accretion-powered model, the influences of both the magnetic field and the mass accretion rate on the spectral properties of AXPs are addressed. We then investigate the relation between the spectral property of AXPs and mass accretion rate M. The result shows that there exists a linear correlation between the photon index and the mass accretion rate: the spectral hardness increases with increasing M. A possible emission mechanism for the explanation of the spectral properties of AXPs is also discussed.  相似文献

The simplest model illustrating the effect of the magnetospheric charge-current field on the structure of a pulsar magnetic field has the region within the light-cylinder filled with the GoldreichJulian charge density which corotates with the neutron star, but has no electric currents along the magnetic field lines. This model has previously been studied for the axisymmetric case, with the rotation and magnetic dipolar axes aligned. The analogous problem is now solved with the two axes mutually perpendicular, so that not only the material current arising from the rotating charges but also the displacement current contributes. Again, the constructed magnetic field B 0 crosses the light-cylinder normally, and there is no energy flux to infinity. However, in a more realistic model there is a flow of current along B 0, generating a field B 1 which has a non-vanishing toroidal component at the light-cylinder, so yielding a finite integrated Poynting flux.  相似文献

Searches for radio pulsars are becoming increasingly difficult because of a rise in impulsive man-made terrestrial radio-frequency interference. Here, we present a new technique, zero dispersion measure filtering, which can significantly reduce the effects of such signals in pulsar search data. The technique has already been applied to a small portion of the data from the Parkes multi-beam pulsar survey, resulting in the discovery of four new pulsars, so illustrating its efficacy.  相似文献
