Abstract

A uniformly valid solution of internal wave equations is presented, using Langer's method, for an arbitrary density profile. The dispersion relation and mean square values of the velocity components are obtained. Particular emphasis is placed on the turning point problem and on estimating the errors involved in the approximations in a recent paper by Garrett and Munk (1972). Expressions are given for various spectral ratios of interest.  相似文献

Statistical properties of small-scale inhomogeneities (wavelengths between 20 and 70 km) near the core-mantle boundary are inferred from scattered core waves. Observations of scattered core waves at large seismic arrays and worldwide networks indicate that the inhomogeneities have a global nature with similar characteristics. However, there may exist a few regions having markedly stronger or weaker strengths. Scattering by volumetric inhomogeneities of about 1% inP-wave velocity in the lower mantle or by about 300 m of topographic relief of the core-mantle boundary can explain the observations. At present it is not possible to rule out either of these two alternatives, or a combination of both.  相似文献

Summary The interpretation of surface seismic waves records is rather complicated as they include a superposition of oscillations of the fundamental mode and higher modes. Besides recorded oscillations depend on spectral characteristics of motions in earthquakes sources. The consideration of these problems is based on results of surface waves two-dimensional modelling [1]3. Some physical ideas about their formation deals with the change of the nature of the oscillation propagating with dispersion. Summary A statistical study of the reported height variations of the tropopause over Indian latitudes has been taken up in the present investigation. The analysis show two types of tropopause (1) the tropical tropopause, and (2) the extratropical tropopause. The latitudinal movement of the extratropical tropopause and the height variation of tropical tropopause with seasons are examined. The tropical tropopause near equatorial latitudes shows a lowering of the height during monsoon months (summer months) contrary to the normal expected structure. The characteristics of this equatorial tropopause are examined in relation to meteorological parameters of the troposphere and stratosphere.  相似文献

In this paper we develop a new hypothesis which relates the formation of sand waves in open flow to the effect of stationary (lee) waves on flow with smooth nonhomogeneous downstream depth or behind an obstacle. The lee wave moves upstream with the phase velocity equal to the absolute value of the flow velocity, hence the wave crest does not move. Results of our experiments show that sand waves on the flow bed appear only below the lee waves and characteristics of sand waves are determined by the wave properties. We investigated the nonlinear stationary waves for subcritical and supercritical Froude numbers. These results allow us to predict sand waves characteristics for a particular flow.  相似文献

Abstract

The subject is reviewed from the viewpoints of theory, internal tide and wave structure and their implications.

A wider theoretical context suggests scope for further investigation of natural or nearly-trapped forms above the inertial frequency.

Although internal tides in many locations are observed to have first-mode vertical structure, higher modes are seen offshore from shallow shelf-break forcing and for particular Froude numbers, and may be expected locally near generation. Bottom intensification is often observed where the sea floor matches the characteristic slope. Solitons form from internal tides of large amplitude or at large changes of depth.

Internal tides and solitons are observed also at many sills and in straits, and to intensify in canyons.

Non-linear effects of the waves, especially solitons, include the conveyance of water, nutrients, ‘‘mixing potential'’ etc. away from their source to other locations, and the generation of mean currents. The waves transfer energy and possibly heat between the ocean and shelf, may be a source of medium frequency waves on the shelf (periods of minutes) and can contribute to interior mixing and overturning, bottom stirring and sediment movement.  相似文献

基于全球磁异常数据,利用质心法计算格陵兰岛地区的居里面深度,并结合最新的热流资料、地壳结构和大洋年龄进行分析,加深了对研究区热结构的认识。首先,总结了磁性体满足不同分布时,居里面深度计算的理论公式和校正因子的选择。在格陵兰岛地区应用分形分布,结果表明,研究区居里面深度$ {h}_{{\\rm{b}}} $在40 km以内,平均值约为20 km,估算误差约为2.7 km。校正$ {h}_{{\\rm{b}}} $得到地形到居里面的距离$ {h}_{{\\rm{m}}} $和沉积层底界面到居里面的距离$ {h}_{{\\rm{c}}} $,并根据不同的地壳类型对地表实测热流数据校正得到$ {Q}_{{\\rm{s}}} $。对比结果显示$ {h}_{{\\rm{m}}} $与$ {Q}_{{\\rm{s}}} $基本成负相关,计算结果合理。进一步分析表明,研究区居里面总体上浅于莫霍面,但在格陵兰岛北部部分区域居里面深于莫霍面,在大洋地区的$ {h}_{{\\rm{c}}} $随洋壳年龄的增大而增大。  相似文献

The hypothesis of scattering of PKP waves near the mantle-core boundary provides a comprehensive interpretation of the observed precursors to PKIKP, certain features of which have not been adequately accounted for by any alternative interpretation. These features include the variation with distance of the times and slownesses of precursor onsets, and the variations in amplitude, azimuth and slowness observed in precursor wavetrains.The observed times and slownesses of the earliest precursor onsets are in close agreement with the theoretical least time curve for singly scattered waves.Amplitudes and slownesses of scattered waves have been calculated for earth models which are spherically symmetrical except for random variations in density and elastic parameters in a layer 200 km thick at the base of the mantle. The calculations show that observed precursor amplitudes and slownesses can be accounted for by random variations of about one percent having a correlation distance of about 30 km in this layer. In particular, it is shown that scattering structures up to 900 km above the mantle-core boundary inferred by Doornbos and Vlaar (1973) are not required by their data. There is a suggestion that the main scattering may actually occur inside a layer much less than 200 km thick at the base of the mantle.  相似文献

Summary This paper gives some examples of theoretical seismograms of PKP waves near the caustic. Seismograms of refracted waves for the original medium are compared with seismograms composed as a sum of the reflected waves, generated at boundaries of a substitute medium. All seismograms are calculated by zero approximation of the ray theory. The influence of some parameters of the source function and of the substitute medium on the results is shown.  相似文献

Temporal scaling in stream discharge and hydraulic heads in riparian wells was evaluated to determine the feasibility of using spectral analysis to identify potential surface and groundwater interaction. In floodplains where groundwater levels respond rapidly to precipitation recharge, potential interaction is established if the hydraulic head (h) spectrum of riparian groundwater has a power spectral density similar to stream discharge (Q), exhibiting a characteristic breakpoint between high and low frequencies. At a field site in Walnut Creek watershed in central Iowa, spectral analysis of h in wells located 1 m from the channel edge showed a breakpoint in scaling very similar to the spectrum of Q (~20 h), whereas h in wells located 20 and 40 m from the channel showed temporal scaling from 1 to 10,000 h without a well-defined breakpoint. The spectral exponent (β) in the riparian zone decreased systematically from the channel into the floodplain as groundwater levels were increasingly dominated by white noise groundwater recharge. The scaling pattern of hydraulic head was not affected by land cover type, although the number of analyses was limited and site conditions were variable among sites. Spectral analysis would not replace quantitative tracer or modeling studies, but the method may provide a simple means of confirming potential interaction at some sites.  相似文献

The characteristics of the cold point tropopause (CPT), convective tropopause (COT) and tropical tropopause layer (TTL) in the tropical region at different longitudes are studied using radiosonde data at 5 stations in the tropical belt (±15°) and high resolution GPS radiosonde data from April 2006 to December 2008 at Gadanki (13.5°N, 79.2°E) also a tropical station. The CPT over Gadanki is found to be higher than over the rest of the stations. This aspect is further confirmed using COSMIC GPS RO observations. In the Northern Hemisphere (NH) winter, the CPT is coldest over stations in the Pacific region compared to the other stations while in the NH summer, it is coldest at Gadanki, a station in the Indian monsoon region. The range of seasonal variation of the CPT temperature is found to be quite small over Gadanki compared to the other stations whereas that of the CPT altitude is nearly the same.  相似文献

The numerical three-dimensional MHD model is used to study the formation of the magnetic barrier in the inner part of the magnetosheath near the magnetopause. The set of the quasistationary solutions for several characteristic directions of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) has been obtained: for northward and southward IMF, for the direction along the Parker helix (at an angle of 45° with respect to the Sun-Earth line), and for the predominantly radial direction (at an angle of 20° with respect to the Sun-Earth line). The mechanism used to take into account the effect of magnetic reconnection at the magnetopause on a flow in the magnetosheath is introduced in the case of southward IMF. The results of the calculations indicate that the magnetic field absolute value in the magnetic barrier reaches its maximal value when IMF is northward. The introduction of magnetic reconnection at southward IMF can result in an insignificant decrease in the field value. However, the model predicts that a decrease in the magnetic field is much more substantial when the IMF direction is close to radial.  相似文献

On the basis of stationary aerological observations and measurements at Russian –North Pole drifting stations taken during 1954–1991, tropopause climate parameters (height and temperature at its upper and lower bounds) are determined. Summary In a previous studyReiter andMahlman [37]3) have estimated the amount of stratospheric air intruding into the stable layer of the jet stream front in a case of cyclogenesis not accompanied by surface radioactive fallout. In the present report the same case is examined on a more general basis. The factors that govern the distribution and transformation of tidal waves in the macrotidal estuary of the Mezen River have been considered, including tide range in the mouth section, water discharge in the river’s lower reaches, estuary shape, and bed resistance coefficient. Data on variations of water discharge over period 1920–2008 are given. The parameters of estuary channel narrowing in horizontal and vertical sections have been considered. The effect of narrowing and bed hydraulic friction on tide wave amplitude has been evaluated. Froude number values for the tidal estuary suggest that tidal bore can form at the Mezen mouth. The conditions of the propagation of tidal waves to the mouths of different rivers and tidal bore formation in them are considered.  相似文献

Radar observations at 46.5 MHz of vertical-velocity perturbations at Aberystwyth (52.4N, 4.1W) have been used to examine the incidence of mountain waves and their dependence on local topography and the wind vector at low heights. A contrast is drawn between the effects of easterly winds passing over major topographical features to the east of the radar site and those of westerly winds crossing low coastal topographical features to the west. Estimates are made of the vertical flux of horizontal momentum associated with mountain waves, and the general influence of mountain-wave activity on vertical-velocity measurements at the site is assessed.  相似文献
