Multispacecraft observations of energetic protons (E p 500 keV) were obtained by the APL/JHU instruments on board the IMP-7 and 8 spacecraft and the Voyager-1 and 2 deep space probes, in order to study the generation of solar flare Energetic Storm Particle (ESP) events at widely separated locations on the same shock front. These locations are presumably characterized, on the average, by different interplanetary magnetic field-shock front configurations, i.e. quasi-perpendicular (quasi-parallel) shocks for eastern (western) solar flare sites. The multispacecraft energetic proton observations show that substantial differences in the ESP proton intensity enhancements (defined as the ratio of intensity increases near the shock over the ambient solar proton population) are detected at these energies for locations on the shock front with wide heliolongitude separations. In particular, large ESP proton intensity enhancements are detected at locations on the shock front for which the solar flare site generating the shock is to the east of the spacecraft meridian, whereas only weak ESP events are observed at locations on the same shock for which the flare site is to the west of the spacecraft meridian. The results indicate that acceleration of ESP protons to E p 500 keV takes place exclusively at the quasi-perpendicular shock front domain, consistent with the shock drift acceleration mechanism (Armstrong et al., 1977).  相似文献

Images of comet Hyakutake (C/1996 B2) are analyzed in conjunction with solar wind data from spacecraft to determine the relationship between solar wind conditions and plasma tail morphology. The disconnection event (DE) on March 25, 1996 is analyzed with the aid of data from the IMP-8 and WIND Earth-orbiting spacecraft and the DE is found to be correlated with a crossing of the heliospheric current sheet. The comet was within of Earth at the time of the DE and data from IMP-8 and WIND show no high-speed streams, significant density enhancements or shocks. The latitudinal variation in the appearance and orientation of the plasma tail are interpreted based on results from the Ulysses spacecraft. In the polar solar wind region, the comet has a relatively undisturbed appearance, no DEs were observed, and the orientation of the plasma tail was consistent with a higher solar wind speed. In the equatorial solar wind region, the comet's plasma tail had a disturbed appearance, a major DE was observed, and the orientation of the plasma tail was consistent with a lower solar wind speed. The boundary between the equatorial and polar regions crossed by comet Hyakutake in April 1996 was near 30°N (ecliptic) or 24°N (solar) latitude.  相似文献

Magnetically closed regions in the solar wind   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Interplanetary plasma and magnetic field data collected by Helios-1, Helios-2 and IMP-8 satellites over the periods December 1974–December 1976, January 1976–December 1976 and December 1974–December 1976, respectively, are analysed. From this analysis, we identified 85 about cases in which the proton temperature was very low. In 50 of these cases, the interplanetary magnetic field showed characteristic variations favorable for closed structures in the solar wind.By using the calculated radial temperature gradients as a function of the solar wind speed and the heliocentric distance we were able to identify cold protons in the neighborhood of the Sun (0.3 AU).The estimation of the distance at which regions of cold protons are formed (10R ) shows that this distance is the same whether we are using solar wind plasma data measured in fixed or in varied heliocentric distances.  相似文献

Observations of energetic-ion intensity enhancements (E 290 keV) associated with solar flare generated shock waves (solar flare ESP events), obtained during nearly a decade by the APL/JHU instruments on board the Earth orbiters IMP-7 and 8, are incorporated in this work in order to examine the role of the heliolongitude depended large scale shock morphology with relation to the upstream interplanetary magnetic field in the formation of these ESP events. It is shown that a clear east-west solar hemisphere asymmetry is present in the distribution of the ESP relative intensity enhancements with respect to the heliolongitudes of the shock wave source-flare sites. The large ion-intensity enhancements superimposed on the ambient solar flare ion population are preferentially associated with solar flare sites located to the east of the spacecraft meridian, whereas on the average only weak ESP events are associated with solar flare sites to the west of the spacecraft meridian. The observed asymmetry and its implications on the dominant processes for the generation of the solar flare ESP events are discussed on the basis of the presented extensive survey.  相似文献

On 23 May 1967 energetic (10–50 keV) solar flare X-rays were observed by the OGO-III ion chamber during the period 1808–2100 UT. The time-intensity profile for the X-ray event showed three distinct peaks at 1810, 1841 and 1942 UT. The second peak, which is equivalent to 2.9 × 10–3 ergs cm–2sec–1 above 20 keV, is the largest X-ray burst observed so far by the OGO-I and OGO-III ion chambers. The soft (2–12 Å) X-ray observations reported by Van Allen (1968) also show similar peaks, roughly proportional in magnitude to the energetic X-ray peaks. However, the intensity of energetic X-rays peaked in each case 5–10 min earlier than the soft X-ray intensity indicating a relatively hard photon energy spectrum near the peak of the energetic X-ray emission. The corresponding time-intensity profile for the solar radio emission also showed three peaks in the microwave region nearly coincident with the energetic X-ray peaks. The third radio peak was relatively rich in the metric emission. Beyond this peak both the energetic X-rays and the microwave emission decayed with a time constant of 8 min while the corresponding time constant for the soft X-rays was 43 min. In view of the earlier findings about the energetic X-rays it is indicated that the 23 May solar X-ray event was similar to those observed earlier. During the 23 May event the integral energy flux spectrum at the time of peak intensity is found to be consistent with the form e –E/E 0, E 0 being about 3.4 and 3.7 keV for the peaks at 1841 and 1942 UT, respectively. Assumption of a similar spectrum during the decay phase indicates that the spectral index E 0 decreased nearly exponentially with time. The OGO-III ion chamber, which is also sensitive to protons 12 MeV, observed a solar particle event starting at 2100 UT on 23 May. It could not be determined uniquely which of the two principal X-ray peaks was associated with the particle event, and in fact both may have contributed. The particle intensity reached its maximum value at 1003 UT on 25 May 1967. The equivalent peak radiation dosage was 24 R/hour behind the 0.22 g cm–2 thick aluminum wall of the chamber. This peak radiation dosage was considerably smaller than the maximum dosage (60 R/hour) during the 2 September 1966 solar particle event, the largest event observed so far by the OGO-I and OGO-III satellites. The temporal relationship between the solar X-ray and particle events on 23 May 1967 was similar to that observed in the solar flare events on 7 July 1966, 28 August 1966 and 27 February 1967.  相似文献

The Advanced Technology Solar Telescope site survey Sky Brightness Monitor simultaneously images the solar disk and the sky to about 8 solar radii in four wavelengths at 450, 530, 890 and 940 nm. One day of data from Mees Solar Observatory on Haleakala and from the National Solar Observatory at Sacramento Peak (Sunspot, New Mexico) are analyzed. Both sites show strong Rayleigh extinction, but while Haleakala shows a larger aerosol component, Sunspot shows a large variation in the aerosol component. Overall the Haleakala extinction varies as –2 whereas the Sunspot extinction changes from about –3.5 to about –2, suggesting an increasing aerosol component during the day. Water vapor absorption measurements from both sites are similar, though Sunspot shows larger time variations than Haleakala. The instrument-corrected sky brightness from both sites show comparable values, and again the Sunspot data show more variations. The sky brightness values show a radial dependence of sky brightness of r –0.1 at Haleakala, but a dependence of r –1.0 at Sunspot. The wavelength variation of the sky brightness at Haleakala is relatively constant at –1.5 but varies at Sunspot from –1.5 to –0.1 again suggesting an increasing aerosol contribution during the day at Sunspot. Finally, dust measurements near the ground are compared with the extinction wavelength exponent for data taken at Haleakala on 24 Feb. 2003. The measurements suggest more large dust particles are present near the ground than averaged over the whole air column.  相似文献

Fourier analysis (DFT/CLEAN) of the international sunspot number (R) series since 1932 has revealed two long (250–500 days) and distinct episodes of solar activity exhibiting persistent 13 -day variations. The first episode lasts 500 days near the maximum of solar cycle 20, and the second, 250 days near the end of the current solar cycle 22. The solar radio flux density (F 10_7cm) series since 1947 has also been analyzed. During the first episode both solar indices exhibit distinct 27- and 13-day variations (the first report of 13-day variations in F 10_7cm). During the second episode neither index exhibits distinct 27-day variations and only R exhibits 13-day variations. Conditions affecting the appearance of 13-day variations in F 10_7cm are discussed.  相似文献

Interplanetary Scintillation (IPS) measurements obtained from a large number of compact radio sources (nearly 150 sources) distributed over the heliocentric distance range 15–175 solar radii (R() and heliographic latitude 75° N-75° S have been used to study the global three-dimensional density distribution of the solar wind plasma. Contours of constant electron-density fluctuations (N e) in the heliospheric plasma obtained for both the solar minimum and maximum show a strong solar latitude dependence. During low solar activity, the equatorial density-fluctuation value decreases away from the equator towards higher latitudes and is reduced by 2.5 times at the poles; the level of turbulence is reduced by a factor of 7; the solar-wind mass flux density at the poles is 25% lower than the equatorial value. However, during high solar activity, the average distribution of density fluctuations becomes spherically symmetric. In the ecliptic, the variation of N e with the heliocentric distance follows a power law of the formR –2.2 and it does not show any change with solar activity.  相似文献

Solar-wind data obtained by the OGO-5 and IMP-6-8 Earth satellites show a positive correlation between the ratio of helium to hydrogen temperatures, T /T p, and the velocity difference between the two ions, v - v p . Although this result disagrees with the Prognoz-1 results reported earlier in this journal, it is consistent with the expected control by Coulomb collisions when the solar-wind density is high.  相似文献

Observations of the proton, helium, (C, N, O) and Fe-group nuclei fluxes made during the large 4 August 1972 solar particle event are presented. The results show a small, but significant variation of the composition of multiply-charged nuclei as a function of energy in the energy region above 10 MeV nucleon–1. In particular, the He/(C, N, O) abundance ratio varies by a factor 2 between 10 and 50 MeV nucleon–1 and the Fe-group/(C, N, O) ratio suggests a similar variation. Abundance ratios from the 4 August 1972 event are compared as a function of energy with ratios measured in other solar events to show that several of the earlier results are consistent with an energy variation like that observed in August 1972, while certain other events must have had a substantially different dependence of composition on energy. At energies 50 MeV nucleon–1, the He/(C, N, O) abundance ratio for August 1972 is consistent with all earlier measurements made above that energy which suggests that variations may vanish at high energies.NASA/NAS Senior Resident Research Associate, on leave from TATA Institute of Fundamental Research, Bombay.  相似文献

The recently refurbished Ooty Radio Telescope in southern India was used in a two-month campaign of interplanetary scintillation (IPS) observations in collaboration with the Cambridge IPS array in England during April–May 1992. The unique feature of this campaign was that, for the first time, scintillation enhancements were predicted in real time by observing solar events on 7–8 May, 1992 and then detected at both Ooty and Cambridge. Also, for the first time, high spatial resolution ( 100 sources sr–1) solar wind all-sky velocity maps were obtained at Ooty. Good consistency is found between the IPS observations from both observatories andin-situ shocks detected at Earth by IMP-8.Yohkoh soft X-ray images were used to infer the generation of a coronal mass ejection on 7 May, 1992.  相似文献

Observations of impulsive solar flare X-rays 10 keV by the OGO-5 satellite and the measurements of energetic solar electrons made with the Explorer-35 and Explorer-41 (IMP-5) satellites during the period March 1968–September 1969 have been analyzed in order to determine the ion density in the X-ray source region as well as the location of the electron acceleration region in the solar atmosphere. If we assume that the efficiency of escape of the accelerated electrons into interplanetary space is 10–3, the observations are found to be consistent with the following interpretation: (i) the ion density in the X-ray source region varies from event to event and lies between 109 and 1011 ions cm–3 for those events in which the impulsive X-ray emission could be detected; (ii) for those events in which no impulsive emission was detected above threshold, the ion density in the X-ray source was < 109 ions cm–3; (iii) at least in some small solar flares the region where the electrons are accelerated during the flash phase is located in the lower corona.  相似文献

During the period of the IQSY, January 1964 through December 1965, the sun remained quiet, accelerating few energetic particles. There were many instances during the IQSY when lowenergy detectors on satellites and space probes registered small intensity increases. However, few of these events were associated with protons of energies exceeding 10 MeV. Moreover, the maximum intensities (E p > 500 keV) were typically 1–8/cm2sec ster. Most of these events were below the threshold of riometer detection. The largest solar cosmic ray event observed in 1964 by polar-based riometers was that of March 16. This event was observed by 30 and 50 Mc/s riometers at McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, and Shepherd Bay, N.W.T., Canada. The largest event in 1965 occurred on February 5 and was the largest during the IQSY. It was associated with a class 2 flare at about 1750 UT, February 5. The propagation time between the sun and Earth was about one hour. This event was well observed by satellites, space probes, and riometers. This paper discusses primarily the 5 February 1965 event. Some discussion is also given to the 16 March 1964 event, other small events during the IQSY, and the recent event in March 1966.  相似文献

Calculations performed with several models of the solar chromosphere support Ulmschneider's conclusion that relatively short period acoustic waves heat the low chromosphere in the region just above the temperature minimum. However, these same short period waves (10 period P80 s) are not able to maintain chromospheric temperatures at heights where 5000Å(normal) < 10-6. The calculations also show that an earlier conjecture stating that the H2 population might influence the non-LTE chromospheric H- population is probably not correct, due to lower values of the ratio n e/n H inferred from more recent observations. Finally, the calculations support Athay's contention that the Cayrel mechanism alone cannot produce the observed temperature rise, because the magnitude of the radiative cooling in the lines is too great.  相似文献

I study the temporal variation of the solar rotation on time scales shorter than the 11-year cycle by analyzing the daily Mt. Wilson Doppler measurements from 1967 to 1992. The differential rotation is represented by the three coefficients,A, B, andC, of the following expansion: =A +B sin2() +C sin4(). TheA, B, andC time series show clearly the 11-year solar cycle and they also show high-frequency fluctuations. The Hurst analysis of these time series shows that a Gaussian random process such as observational noise can only account for fluctuations on time scales shorter than 20 days. For time scales from 20 days to 11 years, the variations of A give rise to a Hurst exponent ofH = 0.83, i.e., the variations ofA are persistent. The temporal variations ofB show the same behavior asC, which is different fromA. From one to 11 years, theB andC variations are dominated by the 11-year cycle, while for time lags shorter than about 250 days, theB andC fluctuations give rise to a Hurst exponent ofH = 0.66, which lies betweenH = 1/2, of a Gaussian random process, and the exponent of the persistent process shown byA. An analysis of the equivalent coefficients of the first three even Legendre polynomials, computed usingA, B, andC, provides additional information. For time scales between 100 and 1000 days, the ranges,R/S, of Legendre polynomial coefficients decrease with increasing order of the polynomials which suggests that the persistent process operates mainly on large spatial scales. The Hurst exponent ofH = 0.83 for variations inA is the same asH for monthly sunspot numbers with time scales between 6 months and 200 years and for14C radiocarbon data with time scales between 120 years and 3000 years, previously analyzed by other authors. The combined results imply that the underlying solar process shows the same persistent behavior for time scales as short as about 20 days up to time scales of a few thousand years.Operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc. under cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

Direction finding measurements with the plasma wave experiments on the HAWKEYE 1 and IMP-8 satellites are used to find the source locations of type III solar radio bursts in elevation (geocentric solar ecliptic latitude) and azimuth (geocentric solar ecliptic longitude) in a frequency range from 31.1 kHz to 500 kHz. IMP-8 has its spin axis perpendicular to the ecliptic plane, hence by analyzing the spin modulation of the signals the location of the type III burst projected into the ecliptic can be found. HAWKEYE 1 has its spin axis nearly parallel to the ecliptic plane, hence the elevation of the source may also be determined. The trajectory of the electrons generating the burst, projected onto the ecliptic plane, follows an Archimedean spiral. Out of the ecliptic plane the trajectory is at a nearly constant heliographic latitude. The electrons originate from a region near a solar flare. With direction measurements of elevation and azimuth along with the modulation factor it is possible to determine the source size. Typical half angle source sizes range from 60° at 500 kHz to 40° at 56.2 kHz as viewed from the sun.  相似文献

A theoretical model of the acceleration region of the solar wind with major species (p, , e) and minor ions (e.g., 3He, C, O, Mg, Si) is presented. Observed n e -profiles and the equations of continuity and momentum are used to calculate profiles of T, n, and u for all species, as well as charge states of minor ions. The disagreement of the results of a pure p-e model with observations is discussed in some detail, and it is shown that a model consistent with observations both in the corona and at 1 AU requires a finite abundance of He+ +. This model predicts a strong enhancement of He/H in the lower corona. The results for the frozen-in charge states in the p--e model are in agreement with measurements in the low speed solar wind, especially for the well determined pair O6+/O7+. Finally, a model for a coronal hole is investigated and it is found that wave pressure is necessary to model successfully the observed solar wind speeds and abundances.Although various simplifying assumptions had to be introduced, care was taken to ensure that the model remains physically consistent, i.e., that the same physics is used for the major species as well as the minor ions.  相似文献

The excitation rate P of solar p-modes is computed with a model of stochastic excitation which involves constraints on the averaged properties of the solar turbulence. These constraints are obtained from a 3D simulation. Resulting values for P are found 4.5 times larger than when the calculation assumes properties of turbulent convection which are derived from an 1D solar model based on Gough (1977)'s formulation of the mixing-length theory (GMLT). This difference is mainly due to the assumed values for the mean anisotropy of the velocity field in each case.Calculations based on 3D constraints bring the P maximum closer to the observational one.We also compute P for several models of intermediate mass stars (1 M 2 M).Differences in the values of P max between models computed with the classical mixing-length theory and GMLT models are found large enough for main sequence stars to suggest that measurements of P in this mass range will be able to discriminate between different models of turbulent convection.  相似文献

Using solar wind velocity data obtained by Mariner-2 and IMP-1 spacecrafts, an attempt has been made to study its correlation with 5303 coronal intensity. It is shown that the long-lasting regions of enhanced 5303 intensity in the solar corona are well correlated with recurrent streams of solar wind having high velocity. The time-lag between the central meridian passage (CMP) of the coronal features and the detection of the solar wind streams at the spacecraft is found to be smaller than that implied by a radial solar wind. Significant positive correlations for Mariner-2 data are obtained for coronal intensity at heliolatitudes 5°S–10°N with a time-lag of + 2 days while for IMP-1 data, high positive correlations are obtained for the southern heliolatitudes (10°–25°S) without any time-lag. It should be noted that the average heliographic latitudes for Mariner-2 and IMP-1 were 4°N and 4°S respectively during the periods covered by the present analysis. The implications of the results are discussed.Presented at IUCSTP Symposium on Solar-Terrestrial Physics, Leningrad, May 1970.  相似文献

Except for protons, the chemical composition of solar cosmic rays is very similar to the abundance of the elements at the photosphere of the Sun. If we consider the relative abundance ratio of protons to -particles (P/) at constant rigidity, this ratio is highly variable from one solar cosmic ray event to another. This ratio observed at the Earth, however, decreases monotonically with time from the onset of solar flares and, furthermore, is dependent on the heliocentric distance of the parent flares from the central meridian of the solar disk. P/'s which have been measured before the onset of SC geomagnetic storms change from 1.5 to 50 or more, being a function of the westward position of the source from the east limb of the Sun. These variations with respect to time and heliocentric distance suggest that the propagation of solar cosmic rays is strongly modulated in the interplanetary space. The major part of the -particles seem to propagate as if they are trapped within the magnetic clouds which produce SC geomagnetic and cosmic ray storms at the earth. The chemical composition and rigidity spectra of solar cosmic rays suggest that solar cosmic rays are mainly accelerated by the Fermi mechanism in solar flares. The observed variation of P/'s is produced mainly through the difference between the propagation characteristics of protons and -particles.NAS-NRC Associate with NASA.  相似文献
