Radioactive and trace element distribution in basaltic rocks of Lower Silesia

Summary The distribution of radioactive(Th, U, K) and selected trace(Rb, Sr, Ba, Y, Zr, V, Cr, Ni) elements in volcanic rocks from the Opole and Jawor regions of the Lower Silesia has been studied. The behaviour of these elements in the studied rocks indicates that the Lower Silesian volcanic rocks are characterized by less differentiated type than other volcanic rocks of the Bohemian Massif, the Opole rock types probably having a less differentiated character than the Jawor rock types.

Tidal contribution of the satellites to removing the angular momentum of Jupiter

Summary It has been shown that dynamically, on the basis of the distribution of angular momenta, the Jovian system cannot be considered an analogue within the Solar system. The total tidal decrease in the angular momentum of Jupiter and in its angular velocity of rotation have been estimated, as well as the loss of mechanical energy due to tidal dissipation. It has been concluded that there are no dynamical contradictions with the hypothesis of the common cosmogonic origin of Jupiter and of its eight close satellites.

On the possibility of utilizing grid reports in a local model of short-range forecast of meteorological elements

Summary In the experiment described, we test the possibility of utilizing forecasts of the pressure field, contained in GRID reports, to solve the problem of horizontal boundary conditions of a local model of short-range forecast of meteorological elements. We prove that the assumption of a linear tendency of the prognostic variables in the boundary region yields good results, using the Perkey-Kreitzberg method[1], even if applied to period T=24 hrs. In the Perkey-Kreitzberg method the effect of the horizontal diffusion in the boundary region is suppressed[2]. However, considering the diffusive term apart from the procedure of the method mentioned proves detrimental to the forecast.

Forecast of abnormally high solar activity in the next century and of its possible negative effects on the earth

Summary Based on the relation between the relative sunspot number R, the number of sunspot groups f ₀ generated per unit time on the Sun as a whole and their average lifetime T ₀ , and on the extrapolation of time behaviour of f ₀ and T ₀ , it is proved that abnormally high solar activity may be expected in the first half of the 21st century. At this time, the maximum annual relative sunspot numbers R_M of the 11-year cycles should reach values of about 300 units. This abnormally high solar activity in the next century can be understood as the antipole of the Maunderean minimum. This forecast is used to discuss some of the possible consequences of this abnormally high solar activity for the processes on the Earth: changes of climate (heat waves and draughts in Central Europe), in the higher layers of the Earth's atmosphere (anomalous propagation of radio waves, increased effect of the density of the upper atmosphere on the orbits of man-made satellites), in seismicity (increased seismic activity in Europe and Southeast Asia), for technical devices (induced electric currents), in the biosphere. etc.

Consequences of transducer inductance for seismograph calibration

Summary The magnification achieved with the standard sine-wave method using seismometers with the calibration and signal coils tightly wound on the same coil former can be erroneous at high frequencies due to the mutual inductance between both coils. Seismically active fracture zones and distribution of thermal springs in Ecuador

Summary The analysis of the geometry of distribution of earthquake foci occurring in the continental South American plate above the subducted Nazca plate reveals that in the region of Ecuador these earthquakes accumulate in 8 well-separated fracture zones. These zones are interpreted as a system of deep seismically active fractures induced in the continental plate by the process of subduction. It is shown that the position of known thermal springs and of observed hydrothermal alterations in Ecuador correlates with the outcrops of the fracture zones.
