The behaviour of energetic electrons in the distant magnetosphere near the midnight meridian during polar substorms has been studied for the period March 5th–April 4th, 1965, using data from two end window Geiger counters flown on the IMP 2 satellite (apogee 15.8 Earth radii) and magnetic records from a chain of auroral zone stations around the world at magnetic latitudes equivalent to L = 7.4 ± 2.0.

When the satellite was in the distant radiation zone or in the plasma sheet which extends down the Earth's magnetic tail, sudden decreases in the horizontal magnetic field component at ground stations near the midnight meridian (negative magnetic bays) were followed by sudden increases in 40 keV electron fluxes (electron islands) at the satellite. When the satellite was at high latitudes in the magnetic tail ‘bays’ often were not followed by ‘islands.’ When the satellite was near the centre of the plasma sheet, energetic electron fluxes were observed even during magnetically quiet periods. The time delay between the sharp onset of magnetic bays in the auroral zone and the corresponding rapid increase in energetic electron intensity at the satellite, typically some tens of minutes, was least when the satellite was close to the Earth and increased with its increasing radial distance from the Earth. The delay was also a function of distance of the satellite from the centre of the plasma sheet, and of the magnitude of the intensity increase (smaller delays for larger intensity increases). We deduce that the disturbance producing the magnetic bays and associated particle acceleration originates fairly deep in the magnetosphere and propagates outward to higher L values, and down the plasma sheet in the Earth's magnetic tail on the dark side of the Earth. It is unlikely that the accelerated electrons are themselves drifting away from the Earth, because the apparent velocity with which the islands move away from the Earth decreases with increasing distance from the Earth.

It is suggested that the polar substorm and the associated particle acceleration are part of an impulsive ejection mechanism of magnetospheric energy into the ionosphere, rather than an impulsive injection mechanism of solar wind energy into the magnetosphere.  相似文献

VLF waves in the magnetosphere may be guided by ducts, i.e. enhancements of plasma density aligned with the geomagnetic field. It is required to account for the good transmission properties of these ducts as some leakage of energy is expected, with consequent attenuation. We consider a cylindrical duct, whose axis is parallel to a uniform magnetic field. The electron density of a cold plasma is a function only of radial distance r from the axis, taking constant values in inner and outer regions r < a and r > b, and varying smoothly in the duct wall a < r < b. We compute full-wave ‘trapped’ VLF modes. Results are presented for a range of values of the parameters of the model. In general we find that attenuation of leading modes is very low, agreeing with observation. Specific features are that leakage (arising from mode conversion in the duct wall) increases as the wall is made thinner, that leakage for the leading modes is less for weaker ducts, that many modes may propagate, and that, because of interference effects, some higher order modes also suffer little attenuation.  相似文献

The intimate connection between geomagnetic storms and the aurora was appreciated by many early scientists including Edmund Halley and Anders Celsius, but the first serious study of this phenomena was made by Kristian Birkeland who, during his polar expeditions of 1902–1903, determined that large-scale ionospheric current were associated with the aurora. Birkeland was also the first to suggest that these currents originated far from the Earth and that they flowed into and away from the polar atmosphere along the geomagnetic field lines. The existence of such field-aligned orBirkeland currents was widely disputed because it was not possible to unambiguously identify current systems that are field-aligned (Alfvén, 1939, 1940) and those which are completely contained in the ionosphere (Vestine and Chapman, 1938) only from a study of surface magnetic field measurements. During the last decade, the presence of Birkeland currents has been absolutely confirmed with particle and magnetic field observations acquired from a variety of rocket and satellite instruments. The vector magnetometer on the low-altitude (800 km) polar orbiting TRIAD satellite has been used to determine for the first time the flow direction, spatial distribution, and intensities of Birkeland currents in the north and south auroral regions. These observations support the mechanism originally proposed by Alfvén (1939, 1940)-later expanded by Shieldet al. (1969)-to drive Birkeland currents in the auroral regions, and they demonstrate the important role that these intense currents (ranging between 106 and 107 amperes) play in the coupling of energy between the magnetosphere and the lower ionosphere and atmosphere.Paper dedicated to Professor Hannes Alfvén on the occasion of his 70th birthday, 30 May, 1978.  相似文献

The discrimination between air showers initiated by γ rays and by hadrons is one of the fundamental problems in experimental cosmic-ray physics. The physics of this ‘γ/hadron separation’ is discussed in this paper. We restrict ourselves to the energy range from about 20 to 500 TeV, and take only the information contained in the lateral Čerenkov light distribution and the number of electrons at the detector level into consideration. An understanding of the differences between air showers generated by γ rays and those due to hadrons leads us to formulate suitable observables for the separation process. Angle integrating Čerenkov arrays (AICA) offer a promising new approach to ground-based γ-ray astronomy in the energy region from about 20 to 500 TeV. In order to establish this technique, an efficient suppression of the overwhelming hadronic background radiation is required. As an example for our general discussion, we present one method for γ/hadron separation in AICAs called ‘LES’. It is based on the simultaneous determination of the shower size and some characteristic parameters of the lateral distribution of the Čerenkov light. The potential inherent within this technique is demonstrated in quantitative detail for the existing ‘AIROBICC’ AICA. We also propose an objective measure of the intrinsic sensitivity of a detection scheme in ground-based γ-ray astronomy, the ‘reduced quality factor’. It is shown that AICAs may reach a sensitivity to γ-ray point sources in the high VHE range similar to that of the Čerenkov-telescope imaging technique in the low VHE region.  相似文献

The performance of the arrays of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) for detection of ≥ 100 GeV γ-rays is discussed. The effective detection area of stereoscopic multi-IACT systems is determined essentially by the total geometrical area of the array which may be covered by independent standard ≥ 3 telescope ‘cells’ with a linear size of about 100 m. We have investigated the characteristics of a quadrangular 100 × 100 m2 ‘cell’ with four ‘100 GeV’ class IACTs in its corners which is recommended as an optimal design for the future IACT arrays. The idea of the ‘cell’ makes straightforward the study of the characteristics of IACT arrays. The conclusions obtained, concerning in particular the angular and energy resolutions, and the cosmic ray background rejection efficiency, are rather general and, do not depend on the specific configuration of the array.  相似文献

A set of coupled nonlinear differential equations which govern the dynamics of finite amplitude electromagnetic waves in the presence of an external current gradient in a magnetized electron-positron plasma has been derived. It is shown that the current gradient can make shear Alfvén-like waves unstable. A quasi-stationary solution of the mode-coupling equations is the well-localized dipole vortex. Application of our results to plasma transport in the pulsar magnetosphere is briefly discussed.  相似文献

On 27 January 1979, the S23H rocket was launched from Esrange, Kiruna, Sweden, shortly after the onset of an intense auroral breakup over Northern Scandinavia. The high altitude and short range trajectory of the rocket carried the instruments twice through the same magnetic flux tubes demonstrating some time variation imposed on a spatial structure. Several regions of intense Birkeland current sheets were penetrated, and examples are given where the northward electric field showed anticorrelation, correlation, as well as no correlation with the westward magnetic field perturbations. This is interpreted as examples of down-flowing and up-flowing electromagnetic energy as well as regions of little exchange of energy between the magnetosphere and the ionosphere.  相似文献

We discuss the capability of ‘100 GeV’ class imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope (IACT) arrays as future powerful instruments of ground-based gamma-ray astronomy. It is assumed that the array is gathered from individually triggered quadrangular 4-IACT ‘cells’ with a linear size of about 100 m. The multi-cell concept allows coverage of large detection areas economically, and at the same time the effective exploitation of the stereoscopic approach of determination of the shower parameters using information obtained by several IACTs simultaneously. Determination of arrival directions of γ-ray primaries on an event-by-event basis with accuracy δθ ≤ 0.1° combined with high suppression efficiency (at both the hardware and software levels) of the background hadronic showers by a factor of ≈ 103, and large, up to 1 km2 collection areas, can provide minimum detectable energy fluxes of ≥ 100 GeV γ-rays from point sources down to 10−13 erg/cm2 s which is about 3 orders of magnitude lower than the current sensitivities achieved by the satellite-borne detectors at MeV and GeV energies. High sensitivities of multi-IACT arrays would partially compensate the limited efficiency of the technique for all-sky surveys, as well as allow study of moderately extended (≤ 1°) γ-ray sources. IACT arrays with minimum detectable fluence of ≥ 100 GeV γ-rays Sγ < 10−8 erg/cm2 are well suited for effective exploration of highly sporadic nonthermal phenomena from different classes of astrophysical objects on time-scales from ≤ 1 s to several minutes.  相似文献

Zmuda and Armstrong (1974) showed that the field-aligned currents consist of two pairs; one is located in the morning sector and the other in the evening sector. Our analysis of magnetic records from the TRIAD satellite suggests that in each pair the poleward field-aligned current is more intense than the equatorward current, a typical ratio being 2:1. This difference has a fundamental importance in understanding the coupling between the magnetosphere and the ionosphere. We demonstrate this importance by computing the ionospheric current distribution by solving the continuity equation ▽ . I = j using the “observed” distribution of j for several models of the ionosphere with a high conductive annular ring (simulating the auroral oval). It is shown that the actual field-aligned and ionospheric current system is neither a simple Birkeland type, Boström type nor Zmuda-Armstrong type, but is a complicated combination of them. The relative importance among them varies considerably, depending on the conductivity distribution, the location of the peak of the field-aligned currents, etc. Further, it is found that the north-south segment of ionospheric current which connects the pair of the field-aligned currents in the morning sector does not close in the same meridian and has a large westward deflection. Thus, it has an appreciable contribution to the westward electrojet. One of the model calculations shows that the entire north-south closure current contributes to the westward electrojet.  相似文献

We show that if Io-injected plasma is lost via a planetary wind a sun-fixed Birkeland current system may result. This is due to the fact that a current flows across a density gradient produced by the loss of plasma through the planetary wind in the tail. The divergent current is connected to field-aligned Birkeland currents which flow into the ionosphere at dawn and out of it at dusk. The closure currents in the ionosphere require a dawn-to-dusk electric field which at the orbit of Io is estimated to have a strength of a few mV m?1. Independent estimates derived from the local time asymmetry of the torus u.v. emission indicate a field of 1.5mVm?1.  相似文献

The ionosphere of Jupiter's satellite Io, discovered by the Pioneer 10 radio-occultation experiment, cannot easily be understood in terms of a model of a gravitationally bound, Earth-like ionosphere. Io's gravitational field is so weak that a gravitationally bound ionosphere would probably be blown away by the ram force of the Jovian magnetospheric wind — i.e., the plasma corotating in the Jovian magnetosphere. We propose here a model in which the material for Io's atmosphere and ionosphere is drawn from the ionosphere of Jupiter through a Birkeland current system that is driven by the potential induced across Io by the Jovian corotation electric field. We argue that the ionization near Io is caused by a comet-like interaction between the corotating plasma and Io's atmosphere. The initial interaction employs the critical velocity phenomenon proposed many years ago by Alfvén. Further ionization is produced by the impact of Jovian trapped energetic electrons, and the ionization thus created is swept out ahead of Io in its orbit. Thus, we suggest that what has been reported as a day-night ionospheric asymmetry is in fact an upstream-downstream asymmetry caused by the Jovian magnetospheric wind.Paper dedicated to Professor Hannes Alfvén on the occasion of his 70th birthday, 30th May, 1978.  相似文献

It is suggested that the Jovian decametric emissions (DAM) originate in a cyclotron instability of weakly relativistic electrons trapped in the Jovian magnetic field. The resulting radiation has a group velocity in the magnetosphheric plasma which may be of order 102km/sec, and thus takes much more time to escape the magnetosphere than if the group velocity were at or near the speed of light. Therefore, the asymmetry of the Io phase with respect to sources east and west of the Earth-Jupiter line does not imply an asymmetric beaming of DAM; it is caused by the delay the waves experience in traversing the magnetosphere. The frequency drifts of milli- and decasecond bursts are also explained. It is found that the rotation of the magnetosphere can play an important role, since the observer views the propagation velocity of the waves as the sum of their group velocity and the velocity of the medium itself. The rotation velocity is in opposite directions, relative to the observer, for sources east and west of the Earth-Jupiter line; the resultant vector addition gives positive frequency drifts for decasecond bursts from the early and fourth sources, and negative drifts for bursts from the main and third sources. The negative drifts of millisecond bursts may be the result of large density gradients of plasma in a temporarily compressed magnetosphere.  相似文献

A simple model current sheet is studied numerically. Consistent fields and particle trajectories, and their dependence on electron and proton temperature, convection velocity and normal field, Bz, linking through the current sheet, are presented and discussed. It is shown that the protons, which are the major current carriers, largely retain the decoupling of the motion in the x-y plane from the normal oscillations as in the ‘cold’ current sheet. The positive potential of the current sheet is shown to be sufficient to trap some energetic electrons, the motion of which enables the predominance of energetic electrons towards the dawn side of the tail to be understood. Semi-empirical relationships for the thickness and the potential of the current sheet are obtained.

The consequences of such a current sheet on the behaviour of the geomagnetic tail are investigated. Using Faraday's law and the consistent cross tail electric field it is shown that the effect of a southward turning of the interplanetary field is to lead to a decrease in Bz,an increase of the current sheet conductivity, and a growth of stored field energy, i.e. the current sheet blocks merging. The decrease of the resistance of the current sheet is limited by the finite width of the tail. Finally, it is pointed out that if the conditions which bring about the growth of field energy persist, then the collapse of the field lines characteristic of substorms may occur.  相似文献

We have measured the internal velocity field in jovian synoptic-scale cyclones and anticyclones by tracking cloud elements in very high spatial resolution images obtained by the Voyager 1 and 2 (in 1979) and Galileo (1996-2000) spacecrafts. In total we have studied 24 different closed vortices (6 cyclones, 18 anticyclones) spanning a latitude range from ∼60° N to 60° S and with East-West sizes larger than ∼2000 km. The tangential component of the velocity as a function of the distance to the vortex center and position angle is used to retrieve the vorticity field. We find that the velocity increases in all the vortices from a nearly quiescent center to a maximum at the vortex periphery, with a record of about 180 m s−1 for the GRS. The vorticity of cyclones and anticyclones increases in general toward their periphery with absolute values in the range from ∼2-14×10−5 s−1. There is a marked tendency to increase the vortices vorticity with their latitude location. However the vorticity does not depend on the vortex size, circulation sense, or ambient background meridional wind shear. The vortex Rossby number ranges from ∼0.2 to 0.5. A study of the interaction between the Great Red Spot with other vortices show that the GRS does not change its vorticity upon their absorption. The two White Ovals mergers showed contradictory results, with greater vorticity in the case of BE, but lower vorticity in the case of BA, although data are poorer for this last case. We present the case of a short lived but large coherent cyclone at −59° that was embedded in a weakly anticyclone wind shear domain. We show that jovian vortices do not follow the simple Kida vortex relationship between vorticity and aspect ratio as it has been previously suggested.  相似文献

Certain classes of micropulsations are customarily explained in terms of guided (toroidal) and isotropic (poloidal) hydromagnetic waves m the magnetosphere. The physical properties of these waves are not well understood and their utility in explaining observed polarization patterns is questionable. In an effort to understand and explain the physics underlying these modes, a study is made of a cylindrical cavity (the hydromagnetic wedge), filled with a plasma having a large but finite conductivity and magnetized by an azimuthal magnetic field. Coupling between the toroidal and poloidal modes is effected by the inclusion of the Hall current in the generalized Ohm's law. Physically meaningful solutions to the wave equation are obtained and the toroidal eigenfunctions are demonstrated to be non-degenerate and well-behaved throughout the configuration, and exhibit for each mode a unique spatial resonance whose location, given by a line of force, is specified by the corresponding eigenvalue. The non-degenerate, discrete and spatially independent eigenvalues for the modes are shown to obey a selection rule that limits the spectrum. For a given mode, the states of polarization of the transverse field are determined and it is shown (as has been observed) that, depending on the line of force singled out, the magnetic polarization may be linear, elliptical or circular, right or left-handed, and whatever the state, it is immutable along the line of force. More complicated polarization patterns are derived and explained by superposing different modes vectorially. Classical concepts such as guided and isotropic modes and vibrating field lines are reinterpreted and evaluated in terms of the model. To examine the dependence of modal amplitude on source, the amplitude is expressed in terms of a sinusoidal driving pressure for a simple steady-state case. Symmetries of the model and the magnetosphere are specified and the detailed numerical results are ‘scaled’ for plasmaspheric application. The resonant spectrum, encompassing pc 2–4, is described and the variation of period spectrum with magnetic latitude and activity is presented. The agreement between the semi-quantitative analysis and the observational results is sufficiently close to indicate that the basic physics of the model encompasses the fundamental dynamics of pc activity.  相似文献

The scintillation effects which are produced when radiation is incident on a medium containing phase changing irregularities which have power law spectra are discussed. The results are then applied to the interplanetary medium and it is concluded that the small scale sizes (≈100 km) for irregularities measured by interplanetary scintillation represent a genuine ‘outer scale’ distinct from the 106 km scales detected by space probes. It is also shown that the small scale irregularities contain discontinuities which are finite or almost finite, with a sharpness as yet undetermined.  相似文献

We present the results of a CCD monitoring campaign of the continuum emission from the central region of the Crab nebula, amounting to 17 epochs spread over 3.5 years. The data provide clear evidence that the brightest wisps move outward from the pulsar at mildly relativistic velocities. This motion, combined with the shape of the wisps, supports the idea that they arise at a standing shock in an equatorial wind. The deprojected velocity of the wisps in the equatorial plane is c/3. We see only small changes in the so-called ‘thin wisps’ which leads us to suggest that these wisps may be the result of a back-flow from the shock in a toroidal cavity around the pulsar.  相似文献

The effect of an electric field induced by a rapidly decaying ring current on the motion of charged particles in the magnetosphere has been investigated using Euler potentials. For a model consisting of the earth dipole and the symmetric ring current, the electric field satisfies the condition E . B = 0.

Under this circumstance, the E × B drift of the particle can be identified as the motion of the magnetic field lines and vice versa. The time dependent electric field induced can be evaluated in a Spherical polar coordinate system by the formula

where and β are Euler potentials.

A model calculation on the particle drift velocity vD = E × B/B2 shows that the radial component of the drift velocity is in good agreement with those deduced from whistler duct studies.  相似文献

It is found that from the viewpoint of the magnetic field configuration there are only two types of solar wind: streams with closed field lines (flare-induced streams) and streams with open field lines (M-streams of various velocity and lifetime, and quiet solar wind). We emphasize that in the absence of flare-induced streams the Earth's magnetosphere is, as a rule, circum-flown not by a quiet but by a variably disturbed solar wind—M-streams. An important feature of M-streams is that within a given interplanetary magnetic field sector the sign (+ or −) of the stream magnetic field almost always coincides with that of the sector. These facts lead to the conclusion that M-streams are mainly responsible for the sector structure.  相似文献

Two exact solutions of Einstein's field equations of vacuum are presented and investigated. We will regard the term vacuum fluid as the limiting case of scalar field with an almost constant potential. Considering the four velocity of this fluid we find, that in both solutions there is an anisotropic expansion of the cosmic fluid, but the fluid has vanishing vorticity. We investigate whether shear could prevent the transition into an inflationary era in these models, and the effect of shear on a scalar field is also considered. It is found that shear will speed up the rollover of the scalar field in some Bianchi type-VIII models.Possible initial conditions are discussed in light of the group structures of the models.  相似文献
