Lagrangian fronts (LFs) in the ocean are defined as boundaries between surface waters with strongly different Lagrangian properties. They can be accurately detected in a given velocity field by computing synoptic maps for displacements of synthetic tracers and other Lagrangian indicators. We use Pacific saury catch and location data for a number of commercial fishery seasons in the region of the northwest Pacific with one of the richest fishery in the world. It is shown statistically that the saury fishing grounds with maximal catches are not randomly distributed over the region but located mainly along the sharp LFs where productive cold waters of the Oyashio Current, warmer waters of the southern branch of the Soya Current, and waters of warm-core Kuroshio rings converge. Computation of those fronts in altimetric geostrophic velocity fields both in the years with the First and Second Oyashio Intrusions shows that in spite of different oceanographic conditions LF locations may serve as good indicators of potential fishing grounds. Possible biophysical reasons for saury aggregation near sharp LFs are discussed. We propose a mechanism for effective export of nutrient rich waters based on stretching of material lines in the vicinity of hyperbolic objects in the ocean. The developed method, based on identifying LFs in any velocity fields, is quite general and may be applied to find potential fishing grounds for the other pelagic fish.  相似文献

基于珠江河口水文实测资料和三维水动力数值模型,利用有限时间李雅普诺夫指数提取分析了流场中的拉格朗日拟序结构(LCSs),并结合卫星遥感图像探讨珠江河口LCSs时空分布与其浊度锋的关系。结果显示,河口浊度锋与LCSs在时空上存在很好的契合,LCSs所形成的输运通道与壁垒对河口浊度锋的位置、形态及变化过程有显著影响。落潮时,泥沙随蕉门、洪奇门和横门的落潮射流注入伶仃洋,与虎门下泄的冲淡水对峙形成了一条明显的FTLE脊线,制约着浊度锋的形成和分布形态。涨潮时,来自西北三口门的淡水径流受口门外涨潮流的顶托作用,强烈的水平速度与密度梯度在此处形成LCS,阻碍径流挟带悬浮泥沙的输运而产生浊度锋。由于LCSs很好地勾画了不同动力性质的水体边界,因此可以用来对河口浊度锋进行识别、追踪和动力解释。  相似文献

Based on the AVISO velocity field, we compute daily synoptic Lagrangian maps in the South Kuril area for the fishery seasons of 1998, 1999, and 2001–2005 from available catching data on neon flying squid (NFS). With the help of drift maps for artificial particles, we found that the majority of NFS fishing grounds featuring maximum catches are situated near large-scale Lagrangian intrusions: tongues of water penetrating the surrounding water of other Lagrangian properties. It is shown that the NFS catch locations tend to accumulate at places where waters with different magnitudes of certain Lagrangian indicators converge, mix, and produce filaments, swirls, and tendrils typical of chaotic advection. Potential NFS fishing grounds are mainly located near (1) Lagrangian intrusions of the Subarctic front, (2) intrusions of Okhotsk Sea and Oyashio waters around mesoscale anticyclones east of Hokkaido with subsequent penetration of catch locations inside eddies and (3) intrusions of subtropical waters into the central part of the South Kuril area due to interaction with eddies of different size and polarity. Possible reasons for increased biological production and fishery in the vicinity of Lagrangian intrusions are discussed.  相似文献

根据冯士筰教授于1987年导出的三维质量输运速度的控制方程组出发,在垂直方向上用三次样条函数为基函数作谱展开,水平方向上应用有限差分格式来求解方程组,然后将所提出的计算方法应用于夏季渤海环流,取湍粘性系数随深度变化模式,通过计算可知,潮致余流改变了一般认为夏季渤海环流为一逆时针方向大环流的简单结论,并得到了观测的初步支持。  相似文献

We indentify three different types of Lagrangian coordinate systems that are used in oceanography. These are: true Lagrangian coordinates (TLC), Lagrangian coordinates (LC), and averaged Lagrangian coordinates (ALC). The diffusion process is studied in each of these coordinate systems. At large scales the eddydiffusivity is proven to be independent of molecular diffusivity, providing the spectrum of turbulent kinetic energy varies as scale raised to a power less than 4 1/3. The shear effect is examined using solutions to the averaged Lagrangian diffusion equation obtained by Okuboet al. (1983). In Eulerian coordinates both advection and diffusion are necessary for the occurrence of the shear effect, while in ALC timedependent dispersion coefficients are necessary for the process. In TLC we use the method of Taylor (1921) to study the dispersion of material by a velocity field, that from the Eulerian perspective, consists of turbulent motion across a uniform shear. The transformation of the above Eulerian velocity field into TLC results in a uniform deformation field and turbulent motion both along and across the shear. This work shows how dispersion of material is related to the turbulent Eulerian velocity and uniform velocity gradients. The instantaneous rate of change of variance of a spreading patch of material is completely specified by the instantaneous divergence obtained over the area occupied by the patch (Kawai, 1976). This relationship is shown to depend upon the fact that at any particular instant it is possible to define TLC that are equivalent to the Eulerian coordinates. Study on the transport and mixing in coastal waters is of great concern to the ocean resources exploitation and ecological system protection. Lagrangian methods are direct and effective of researching mass transport. Two Lagrangian tools were adopted and combined to describe water transport in a long-narrow bay, Xiangshan Bay,China. Based on the fields of tidal velocity simulated from the 3-D hydrodynamic model, Lagrangian Coherent Structures(LCSs) and synoptic Lagrangian maps(SLMs) were calculated in the study area. Through comparison of the results, the features and relation of the two tools were discussed. The results show that the LCSs act as the separatrix of the water regions with different transport characteristics and can identify the water areas with different transport time scales. The comprehensive application of the Lagrangian tools is helpful to obtain more insight into the water transport process.  相似文献

基于海洋锋空间位置、水平分布结构和垂直扩展特征等时空特征参数,结合海洋锋空间结构几何模型,建立了区域海洋锋温盐三维结构快速重构特征模型,对黄海西部沿岸锋和东海黑潮中段锋锋区温度场进行了仿真计算,并与实测数据进行了比较分析,实验结果表明:仿真结果与实测数据符合较好,实验结果验证了特征模型的有效性和可推广性。海洋锋区声速具有明显的水平梯度变化,对声纳的水下探测和反探测产生显著影响,因此,需要建立实时估计获取锋区水下温、盐结构的方法。海洋锋特征模型能够快速有效地重构海洋锋区温度场,为实时获取海洋锋水下结构特征提供了方法。  相似文献

The paper presents a numerical method for calculating the particle trajectories of nonlinear gravity waves in deep water. Particle trajectories, mass-transport velocity and Lagrangian wave period can be accurately determined by the proposed method. The high success rate of the proposed method is examined by comparing the present results with those of (a) Longuet-Higgins, M.S., 1986, 1987. Eulerian and Lagrangian aspects of surface waves. Journal of Fluid Mechanics 173, 683-707 and (b) Lagrangian moments and mass transport in Stokes waves. Journal of Fluid Mechanics 179, 547-555. 在流体力学中,描述流体运动有Lagrange方法和Euler方法.Euler方法是通过观测通过空间各固定位置点处流体质点的运动行为来描述流体运动规律,而Lagrange方法是跟踪各个流体质点,通过观测它们在时空运动中所走过的路径来描述流体的运动规律.在数学处理上,Euler方法较Lagrange方法简单,但Lagrange方法可以完全描述流体运动的整个流场的所有特性,而Euler方法却无法描述每个流体质点的运动轨迹.本文,我们研究具有刚性边界的三层流体系统中的界面内波,其中上层流体的密度比下层流体的密度大.通过在界面处引入朗格朗日匹配条件并使用微扰法得到了拉格朗日描述下的界面内波的一阶解、二阶解及三阶解,给出了质量输运速度、波频率、平均水平和质点运动轨迹的解.结果表明对于质量输运速度、波频率、平均水平和质点运动轨迹在界面处会有不连续性,但是我们发现在满足一定的三层流体水深比和密度比条件时这种不连续性将会消失.  相似文献

Transport and mixing properties of surface currents can be detected from altimetric data by both Eulerian and Lagrangian diagnostics. In contrast with Eulerian diagnostics, Lagrangian tools like the local Lyapunov exponents have the advantage of exploiting both spatial and temporal variability of the velocity field and are in principle able to unveil subgrid filaments generated by chaotic stirring. However, one may wonder whether this theoretical advantage is of practical interest in real-data, mesoscale and sub-mesoscale analysis, because of the uncertainties and resolution of altimetric products, and the non-passive nature of biogeochemical tracers. Here we compare the ability of standard Eulerian diagnostics and the finite-size Lyapunov exponent in detecting instantaneous and climatological transport and mixing properties in the south-western Mediterranean. By comparing with sea-surface temperature patterns, we find that the two approaches provide similar results for slowly evolving eddies like the first Alboran gyre. However, the Lyapunov exponent is also able to predict the (sub-)mesoscale filamentary processes occurring along the Algerian current and above the Balearic Abyssal Plain. Such filaments are also observed, with some mismatch, in sea-surface temperature patterns. Climatologies of Lyapunov exponents do not show any compact relation with other Eulerian diagnostics, unveiling a different structure even at the basin scale. We conclude that filamentation dynamics can be detected by reprocessing available altimetric data with Lagrangian tools, giving insight into (sub-)mesoscale stirring processes relevant to tracer observations and complementing traditional Eulerian diagnostics.  相似文献

Axial fronts of tidal currents are observed in Cook Inlet, AK, on a RADARSAT-1 standard mode synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image taken at 16:31:47 coordinated universal time (UTC) on July 12, 2002. The longest front appears as a 100-km-long quasi-linear bright feature in the SAR image. This front is characterized by an increase in the normalized radar cross section (NRCS) of 7 dB in the C-band horizontal polarization (C-HH) RADARSAT-1 SAR image. Two other smaller fronts exist in the middle of the inlet. The NRCS modulations appear to be less, at about 5 dB. A diagnostic Cook Inlet tidal model is developed to calculate the current velocity fields of the inlet and to demonstrate that the variation in bottom friction caused by the bathymetry distribution generates axial convergence at different tidal stages. The model, using the actual bathymetry, is driven by predicted tides from six tidal stations along the inlet coast. The model results show that the tidal current flowed into the inlet at the time the SAR image was obtained. Tidal current along two transects in the inlet is extracted to show that there is a significant cross-channel convergence of the along-channel velocity component, with a magnitude of 4 to 6 /spl times/ 10/sup -4/ s/sup -1/ near the observed front positions. In general, a higher velocity convergence from the model corresponds to higher NRCS return areas in this SAR image.  相似文献

The climatologies and variabilities of the fronts associated with the Kuroshio Extension (KE), the Kuroshio Extension Northern Branch (KENB), the flow along the Subarctic Boundary (SAB), and the Subarctic Current (SAC) are identified by a new method based on the absolute dynamic height product from the archiving, validation, and interpretation of satellite oceanographic data (the AVISO product). The fronts are detected by examining the specific contour values of the absolute dynamic topography (ADT) in the AVISO product. The (time-varying) specific contour values are decided from the local maxima of the averaged surface geostrophic velocity along the ADT. Assuming the specific contours as the front locations, we obtain an occurrence frequency map of the four front locations, and determine the monthly variability of the fronts over the 1993–2015 period. The results are validated by hydrographic observations. The KE and KENB east of the Shatsky Rise migrate southward several times at a speed of ~ 0.2 cm s?1, while the SAB and SAC are mostly stationary.  相似文献

海流的拉格朗日运动对于研究物质输送有着重要意义,拉格朗日拟序结构(LCSs)作为研究海流结构的新型方法,相比于传统欧拉方法更为客观。本文提出了一种新的计算LCSs束的方法,基于25年的平均速度场,利用变分方法计算得到黑潮区域的气候态LCSs,并通过简化合并的方法得到了气候态LCSs束,该LCSs束能够突出地显示出海流特性和运输模式,其代表的平均拉格朗日环流有很强的约束作用,且具有鲁棒性。最终我们获得了气候态下12个月份的流场结构图,揭示了月周期性拉格朗日环流规律。本文还利用虚拟粒子输运、多年浮标轨迹以及气候态温盐异常3种方法进行了验证,与拉格朗日运输模式相吻合,证明了海流拉格朗日拟序结构的准确性和可靠性。  相似文献

Using a combination of Quick Scatterometer (QuikSCAT), Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer-Earth Observing System (AMSR-E), and Lagrangian drifter measurements, we demonstrate that wind data alone are not sufficient to derive ocean surface stress (momentum flux) over mid-latitude ocean fronts, specifically the Kuroshio Extension. There was no continuous and large-scale stress measurement over ocean until the launch of the scatterometers. Stress had been derived from winds through a drag coefficient, and our concept of stress distribution may be largely influenced by our knowledge of wind distribution. QuikSCAT reveals that the variability of stress could be very different from wind. The spatial coherence between the magnitude of stress and sea surface temperature (SST), between the divergence of surface stress and the downwind SST gradient, and between the vorticity of stress and crosswind SST gradient, are the inherent characteristics of stress (turbulence production by buoyancy) that would exist even under a uniform wind field. The coherence between stress vorticity and SST gradient is masked by the rotation of ocean currents over the Kuroshio meanders. Surface stress rotates in the opposite direction to surface currents because stress is the vector difference between wind and current. The results are in agreement with a previous study of the Agulhas Extension and confirm the unique stress measuring capability of the scatterometer.  相似文献

A brief review is made on the theory of the Lagrangian residual circulation and inter-tidal transports in a convectively weakly nonlinear system. In the review the emphasis is put on the systematical development of the theory and its weakness of convectively weakly nonlinear approximation. The fundamentals of a Lagrangian tidally-averaged theory on circulation with inter-tidal transport processes have been proposed for a general nonlinear coastal/estuarine system. The Lagrangian residual velocity is strictly de- fined, and it has been verified to be able to embody the velocity field of circulation. A new concept of the concentration for inter- tidal transport processes is presented. The concentration describing the inter-tidal transport processes should be a "Lagrangian inter-tidal concentration" defined and named, but not the Eulcrian tidally-averaged concentration used traditionally. The circulation described here contains a set of infinite temporal-spatial fields of velocity/concentration, each of which corresponds to a specific value of tidal phases varying continuously over one tidal cycle. When the convectively weakly nonlinear condition( with a smaller order of eddy diffusion and sources) is approximately satisfied, a set of infinite temporal-spatial fields of velocity/concentration can be reduced to a single one.. the mass transport velocity/the Eulerian tidally averaged concentration as exhibited traditionally.  相似文献

A computational method for diagnosing three-dimensional atmospheric fronts from temperature, wind, and geopotential fields on a three-dimensional regular grid is proposed. The criterion, which serves for the diagnosis of atmospheric fronts, is discussed. The weights of the input information about the mentioned fields are optimized based on the maximal difference between the correlation functions for (a) pairs of particles separated by the front and (b) pairs from one synoptic mass. These weights were different for different baric levels. The correlation functions and the optimization of weights were estimated on the basis of the archive of fields of the NCEP objective analysis on the half-degree latitude-longitude grid and data from aerological observations. The results of numerical experiments on the construction of atmospheric fronts are presented. Applying the described method to fields predicted for a term of up to 36 h showed that errors in the prognostic models introduce a relatively weak distortion into the geometry of atmospheric fronts.  相似文献

应用弱非线性理论导出了狭窄型河口内拉格朗日余流的控制方程和溶解质长期输运方程,并应用流速分解法和B—样条配置技术建立了潮汐及拉格朗日余流的数值模型,应用欧拉—拉格朗日方法和B—样条配置技术建立了长期物质输运方程的数值模型,对狭窄型河口内潮致—斜压拉格朗日余环流进行了研究。结果表明,河口垂向拉格朗日余环流,不同于欧拉余环流,呈现一种较复杂的流型,在盐水入侵界的上游可能存在一涡旋。作者提出,将河口按余环流生成机制和水动力特征分为斜压,潮控及河流三个区。  相似文献
