We present N -body simulations of dissolving star clusters close to Galactic Centres. For this purpose, we developed a new N -body program called nbody6gc based on Aarseth's series of N -body codes. We describe the algorithm in detail. We report about the density wave phenomenon in the tidal arms which has been recently explained by Küpper, Macleod & Heggie. Standing waves develop in the tidal arms. The wave knots or clumps develop at the position, where the emerging tidal arm hits the potential wall of the effective potential and is reflected. The escaping stars move through the wave knots further into the tidal arms. We show the consistency of the positions of the wave knots with the theory in Just et al. We also demonstrate a simple method to study the properties of tidal arms. By solving many eigenvalue problems along the tidal arms, we numerically construct a one-dimensional coordinate system whose direction is always along a principal axis of the local tensor of inertia. Along this coordinate system, physical quantities can be evaluated. The half-mass or dissolution times of our models are almost independent of the particle number which indicates that two-body relaxation is not the dominant mechanism leading to the dissolution. This may be a typical situation for many young star clusters. We propose a classification scheme which sheds light on the dissolution mechanism.  相似文献

Tidal cycling has been causally implicated at the origin of life, but the speed of early tides has not been established. The rotation period of the Earth is the dominant parameter, and a length of day (LOD) of under 6 h at 3.9 Ga was inferred by regression from present values [Lathe, R. 2004. Icarus 168, 18-22]. However, this would imply critical lunar proximity at that time; in their commentary Varga et al. instead argue for a more distant Moon, proposing LOD=16.8 h. The debate is accentuated because regression from current values requires an Earth-Moon juxtaposition at around 2 Ga, for which there is no evidence. A smooth retreat from a Moon-forming impact at 4.5 Ga is also irreconcilable with the weight of paleotidal evidence. An inflection in the lunar recession curve is required to reconcile current and recent Earth-Moon values with a 4.5 Ga origin, requiring a change in tidal friction during the evolution of the Earth-Moon system. Depending on whether this took place at ∼2-2.5 Ga before present, or more recently (∼0.8-0.2 Ga), LOD values are estimated at between 12 and 16 h, suggesting a compromise figure of LOD=∼14 h, with tides every ∼7 h, at 3.9 Ga.  相似文献

Abstract— 1996 FG3 is a binary near‐Earth object (NEO) that was likely formed during a tidal disruption event. Our results indicate that the formation of this binary object was unlikely to have occurred when the progenitor had a encounter velocity with the Earth significantly smaller than its current value (10.7 km/s); The formation of the binary object on an orbit similar to the present one is possible, and the survival of the satellite constrains this to have happened less than 1.6 Ma ago. However, the binary object could also have been formed when the progenitor's encounter velocity with Earth was >12 km/s, and in this case we cannot constrain its formation age. Our results indicate that tidal disruptions occurring among NEOs with low velocity encounters with Earth are unlikely to produce long‐lasting NEO binaries. Thus, tidal disruption may not be able to completely re‐supply the observed population. This would imply that a significant fraction of the observed NEO binaries evolved out of the main asteroid belt. Overall, our results suggest to us that the CM2 meteorites having cosmic ray exposure (CRE) ages of ?200,000 yr were likely liberated by the tidal disruption of a primitive NEO with a relative velocity with the Earth significantly smaller than that of 1996 FG3. We propose a list of such objects, although as far as we know, none of the candidates is a binary for the reasons described above.  相似文献

We present N -body simulations (including an initial mass function) of globular clusters in the Galaxy in order to study effects of the tidal field systematically on the properties of the outer parts of globular clusters. Using nbody6 , which correctly takes into account the two-body relaxation, we investigate the development of tidal tails of globular clusters in the Galactic tidal field. For simplicity, we have employed only the spherical components (bulge and halo) of the Galaxy, and ignored the effects of stellar evolution which could have been important in the very early phase of the cluster evolution. The total number of stars in our simulations is about 20 000, which is much smaller than the realistic number of stars. All simulations had been done for several orbital periods in order to understand the development of the tidal tails. In our scaled-down models, the relaxation time is sufficiently short to show the mass segregation effect, but we did not go far enough to see the core collapse, and the fraction of stars lost from the cluster at the end of the simulations is only ∼10 per cent. The radial distribution of extra-tidal stars can be described by a power law with a slope around −3 in surface density. The directions of tidal tails are determined by the orbits and locations of the clusters. We find that the length of tidal tails increases towards the apogalacticon and decreases towards the perigalacticon. This is an anti-correlation with the strength of the tidal field, caused by the fact that the time-scale for the stars to respond to the potential is similar to the orbital time-scale of the cluster. The escape of stars in the tidal tails towards the pericentre could be another reason for the decrease of the length of tidal tails. We find that the rotational angular velocity of tidally induced clusters shows quite different behaviour from that of initially rotating clusters.  相似文献

Tidal tails of star clusters are not homogeneous but show well-defined clumps in observations as well as in numerical simulations. Recently, an epicyclic theory for the formation of these clumps was presented. A quantitative analysis was still missing. We present a quantitative derivation of the angular momentum and energy distribution of escaping stars from a star cluster in the tidal field of the Milky Way and derive the connection to the position and width of the clumps. For the numerical realization we use star-by-star N -body simulations. We find a very good agreement of theory and models. We show that the radial offset of the tidal arms scales with the tidal radius, which is a function of cluster mass and the rotation curve at the cluster orbit. The mean radial offset is 2.77 times the tidal radius in the outer disc. Near the Galactic Centre the circumstances are more complicated, but to lowest order the theory still applies. We have also measured the Jacobi energy distribution of bound stars and showed that there is a large fraction of stars (about 35 per cent) above the critical Jacobi energy at all times, which can potentially leave the cluster. This is a hint that the mass loss is dominated by a self-regulating process of increasing Jacobi energy due to the weakening of the potential well of the star cluster, which is induced by the mass loss itself.  相似文献

The cross-correlation coefficient (t) of the solar tidal force induced by the planets f(x + t) with the sunspot number g(x) during a period of 44 years is about -0.7 when t is about -2 years. This fact will be useful for predicting solar activity. The solar tidal force was calculated from 1928 to 1971 for every degree on the equatorial plane and every time every planet moves one degree. As the solar tidal force, we used the moving annual average by months of the square of the vertical tidal force on the sun, and as the sunspot number we used the Zürich mean annual sunspot number.  相似文献

Based on recent findings of a formation mechanism of substructure in tidal tails by Küpper et al., we investigate a more comprehensive set of N -body models of star clusters on orbits about a Milky Way like potential. We find that the predicted epicyclic overdensities arise in any tidal tail no matter which orbit the cluster follows as long as the cluster lives long enough for the overdensities to build up.
The distance of the overdensities along the tidal tail from the cluster centre depends for circular orbits only on the mass of the cluster and the strength of the tidal field, and therefore decreases monotonically with time, while for eccentric orbits the orbital motion influences the distance, causing a periodic compression and stretching of the tails and making the distance oscillate with time. We provide an approximation for estimating the distance of the overdensities in this case.
We describe an additional type of overdensity which arises in extended tidal tails of clusters on eccentric orbits, when the acceleration of the tidal field on the stellar stream is no longer homogeneous. Moreover, we conclude that a pericentre passage or a disc shock is not the direct origin of an overdensity within a tidal tail. Escape due to such tidal perturbations does not take place immediately after the perturbation but is rather delayed and spread over the orbit of the cluster. All observable overdensities are therefore of the mentioned two types. In particular, we note that substructured tidal tails do not imply the existence of dark matter substructures in the haloes of galaxies.  相似文献

We performed 2D numerical simulations of oscillatory tidal flexing to study the interrelationship between tidal dissipation (calculated using the Maxwell model) and a heterogeneous temperature structure in Europa’s ice shell. Our 2D simulations show that, if the temperature is spatially uniform, the tidal dissipation rate peaks when the Maxwell time is close to the tidal period, consistent with previous studies. The tidal dissipation rate in a convective plume encased in a different background temperature depends on both the plume and background temperature. At a fixed background temperature, the dissipation increases strongly with plume temperature at low temperatures, peaks, and then decreases with temperature near the melting point when a melting-temperature viscosity of 1013 Pa s is used; however, the peak occurs at significantly higher temperature in this heterogeneous case than in a homogeneous medium for equivalent rheology. For constant plume temperature, the dissipation rate in a plume decreases as the surrounding temperature increases; plumes that are warmer than their surroundings can exhibit enhanced heating not only relative to their surroundings but relative to the Maxwell-model prediction for a homogeneous medium at the plume temperature. These results have important implications for thermal feedbacks in Europa’s ice shell. To self-consistently determine how convection interacts with tidal heating that is correctly calculated from the time-evolving heterogeneous temperature field, we coupled viscoelastic simulations of oscillatory tidal flexing (using Tekton) to long-term simulations of the convective evolution (using ConMan). Our simulations show that the tidal dissipation rate resulting from heterogeneous temperature can have a strong impact on thermal convection in Europa’s ice shell. Temperatures within upwelling plumes are greatly enhanced and can reach the melting temperature under plausible tidal-flexing amplitude for Europa. A pre-existing fracture zone (at least 6 km deep) promotes the concentration of tidal dissipation (up to ∼20 times more than that in the surroundings), leading to lithospheric thinning. This supports the idea that spatially variable tidal dissipation could lead locally to high temperatures, partial melting, and play an important role in the formation of ridges, chaos, or other features.  相似文献

A detailed analysis of the geometry of galaxies in clusters has been undertaken in both two and three dimensional space. The procedure was applied to the three Abell clusters A1644, A548 E and A548 W. No significant alignment trend of galaxies in clusters confirmed in three dimensional space was found. This result is consistent with the mixed dark matter model MDM of galaxy formation. The result is also consistent with Peebles suggestion that protogalaxies acquired angular momentum from tidal torques exerted by their neighbours in the early universe. The amount of angular momentum predicted by this mechanism could be described by a single dimensionless papameter λ≈ 0.8. N-body experiments have shown that λ has approximately normal distribution with mean value about 0.07 and with a standard deviation of about 0.03. From the analyic fit to flat rotation curves it is found that tidal torque can provide the observed angular momentum if the mean collapse factor is about 20 and the mean halo-to-disk mass ratio is of order 10. The MDM model does not predict any systematic relation between the tidal torques among the halos of galaxies and the large scale structures such as the clusters, superclusters of galaxies and giant voids in between. Further work in this area is still required. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

We explain in simple terms how the build-up of dark haloes by merging compact satellites, as in the cold dark matter (CDM) cosmology, inevitably leads to an inner cusp of density profile  ρ∝ r −α  with  α≳ 1  , as seen in cosmological N -body simulations. A flatter halo core with  α < 1  exerts on the satellites tidal compression in all directions, which prevents the deposit of stripped satellite material in the core region. This makes the satellite orbits decay from the radius where  α∼ 1  to the halo centre with no local tidal mass transfer, and thus causes a rapid steepening of the inner profile to  α > 1  . These tidal effects, the resultant steepening of the profile to a cusp, and the stability of this cusp to tandem mergers with compact satellites are demonstrated using N -body simulations. The transition at  α∼ 1  is then addressed using toy models in the limiting cases of impulse and adiabatic approximations and using tidal radii for satellites on radial and circular orbits. In an associated paper, we address the subsequent slow convergence from either side to an asymptotic stable cusp with  α≳ 1  . Our analysis thus implies that an inner cusp is enforced when small haloes are typically more compact than larger haloes, as in the CDM scenario, such that enough satellite material makes it intact into the inner halo and is deposited there. We conclude that a necessary condition for maintaining a flat core, as indicated by observations, is that the inner regions of the CDM satellite haloes be puffed up by about 50 per cent such that when they merge into a larger halo they would be disrupted outside the halo core. This puffing up could be due to baryonic feedback processes in small haloes, which may be stimulated by the tidal compression in the halo cores.  相似文献

Estimates of tidal damping times of the orbital eccentricities of Saturn's inner satellites place constraints on some satellite rigidities and dissipation functions Q. These constraints favor rock-like rather than ice-like properties for Mimas and probably Dione. Photometric and other observational data are consistent with relatively higher densities for these two satellites, but require lower densities for Tethys, Enceladus, and Rhea. This leads to a nonmonotonic density distribution for Saturn's inner satellites, apparently determined by different mass fractions of rocky materials. In spite of the consequences of tidal dissipation for the orbital eccentricity decay and implications for satellite compositions, tidal heating is not an important contributor to the thermal history of any Saturnian satellite.  相似文献

In this paper, we present new spectropolarimetric observations of the planet-hosting star τ Bootis, using ESPaDOnS and Narval spectropolarimeters at Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope and Telescope Bernard Lyot, respectively.
We detected the magnetic field of the star at three epochs in 2008. It has a weak magnetic field of only a few gauss, oscillating between a predominant toroidal component in January and a dominant poloidal component in June and July. A magnetic polarity reversal was observed relative to the magnetic topology in 2007 June. This is the second such reversal observed in 2 years on this star, suggesting that τ Boo has a magnetic cycle of about 2 years. This is the first detection of a magnetic cycle for a star other than the Sun. The role of the close-in massive planet in the short activity cycle of the star is questioned.
τ Boo has a strong differential rotation, a common trend for stars with shallow convective envelope. At latitude 40°, the surface layer of the star rotates in 3.31 d, equal to the orbital period. Synchronization suggests that the tidal effects induced by the planet may be strong enough to force at least the thin convective envelope into corotation.
τ Boo shows variability in the Ca  ii H & K and Hα throughout the night and on a night-to-night time-scale. We do not detect enhancement in the activity of the star that may be related to the conjunction of the planet. Further data are needed to conclude about the activity enhancement due to the planet.  相似文献

The Roche Limit
The role of tides in deforming and possibly disrupting a secondary body orbiting about a primary body has been known for a considerable time. This was first inspired by the observations of ocean tides on Earth and then seen as playing an important role in the formation and evolution of the Earth–Moon system. Finally, in the beginning of the 20th century it was generally thought to have a significant role in the formation of the solar system through the tidal disruption of the Sun. Here, an overview of the historical developments of the ideas concerned with tidal disruption of a secondary body that can lead to mass loss is given. Some discussion of possible extensions to consider more realistic situations where the secondary body may not be moving on a circular orbit and may not rotate so as to maintain the phase-on configuration to the primary body is also given.  相似文献

Protostars in a group exert gravitational tidal torques on an aspherical nebula located in the group. The net torque transfers angular momentum from the orbital motions of the stars to rotation of the nebula. A relation can be derived between the parameters describing the protostars and the final angular momentum of the nebula. While the parameters concerned are uncertain, a conservative choice results in a value for the angular momentum equal to about 1/3 of that of the present solar system. This suggests that if the Sun formed in a group, tidal interactions with other protostars may account for a significant part of the angular momentum of the solar system.  相似文献

This paper investigates the tidal effect on accretion disk in CVs and sets up a simplified model in which the secondary's gravitation is substituted by a mean tidal torque. We find that a linear tidal torque will not be able to maintain an equilibrium disk. By using the result of the radius of the equilibrium disk approximately equals to the tidal radius, which was obtained by using the two dimensional numerical simulation invoking nonlinear tidal effect, we give the modified tidal dissipation function for our simplified model which could be used to interpret the outburst of the dwarf nova with tidal effect. The paper also shows that the radius of an equilibrium disk with a torus is slightly small than the Lubow-Shu radius, and the tidal effect may also cause the cycle of quiescence-superoutburst in addition to the cycle of quiescence-outbursts-superoutburst.  相似文献

Sets of ridges of uncertain origin are seen in twenty-nine high-resolution Galileo images, which sample seven locales on Io. These ridges are on the order of a few kilometers in length with a spacing of about a kilometer. Within each locale, the ridges have a consistent orientation, but the orientations vary from place to place. We investigate whether these ridges could be a result of tidal flexing of Io by comparing their orientations with the peak tidal stress orientations at the same locations. We find that ridges grouped near the equator are aligned either north-south or east-west, as are the predicted principal stress orientations there. It is not clear why particular groups run north-south and others east-west. The one set of ridges observed far from the equator (52° S) has an oblique azimuth, as do the tidal stresses at those latitudes. Therefore, all observed ridges have similar orientations to the tidal stress in their region. This correlation is consistent with the hypothesis that tidal flexing of Io plays an important role in ridge formation.  相似文献

The densities measured by the CACTUS microaccelerometer at altitudes from 270 to 600 km are used to analyze the effect of tidal perturbations in the Earth’s thermosphere caused by the gravitational attraction of the Moon and the Sun. These tidal perturbations are considered a priori small and are not taken into account in modern atmospheric density models. The residuals between the densities measured by the CACTUS microaccelerometer and calculated by models are analyzed, and the density variations correlating with variations of the zenith angles from the Moon to the center of the Earth to the satellite and from the Sun to the center of the Earth to the satellite are found at altitudes from 270 to 600 km. The amplitude of the perturbations revealed in the study grows with height. The phase of the tidal perturbations also varies with height. The amplitude of the density variations is about 30% at 270–320 km and increases to 80% at 520–570 km. The results agree with a priori theoretical estimates obtained for tidal motion of gaseous matter with a variable density.  相似文献

The resonance amongst three of the Galilean satellites is described in a way intended to demonstrate the similarities it has to the normal two-satellite resonance. The hypothesis that the resonance was formed by the action of tidal forces is discussed. The problem is too complicated to reach any firm conclusions, but the tidal hypothesis does not seem to be a satisfactory explanation.

A recent estimate of tidal dissipation by turbulent viscosity in Jupiter's convective interior predicts that the current value of the planet's tidal Q ~ 5 × 106. We point out a fundamental error in this calculation, and show that turbulent dissipation alone implies that at present Q ~ 5 × 1013. Our reduced estimat for the rate of tidal dissipation shows conclusively that tidal torques have produced only negligible modifications of the orbits of the Galilean satellites over the age of the solar system.  相似文献
