We derive an analytical approximation of nonlinear force-free magnetic field solutions (NLFFF) that can efficiently be used for fast forward-fitting to solar magnetic data, constrained either by observed line-of-sight magnetograms and stereoscopically triangulated coronal loops, or by 3D vector-magnetograph data. The derived NLFFF solutions provide the magnetic field components B x (x), B y (x), B z (x), the force-free parameter α(x), the electric current density j(x), and are accurate to second-order (of the nonlinear force-free α-parameter). The explicit expressions of a force-free field can easily be applied to modeling or forward-fitting of many coronal phenomena.  相似文献

We examine the propagation of Alfvén waves in the solar atmosphere. The principal theoretical virtues of this work are: (i) The full wave equation is solved without recourse to the small-wavelength eikonal approximation (ii) The background solar atmosphere is realistic, consisting of an HSRA/VAL representation of the photosphere and chromosphere, a 200 km thick transition region, a model for the upper transition region below a coronal hole (provided by R. Munro), and the Munro-Jackson model of a polar coronal hole. The principal results are:
  1. If the wave source is taken to be near the top of the convection zone, where n H = 5.2 × 1016 cm?3, and if B = 10.5 G, then the wave Poynting flux exhibits a series of strong resonant peaks at periods downwards from 1.6 hr. The resonant frequencies are in the ratios of the zeroes of J 0, but depend on B , and on the density and scale height at the wave source. The longest period peaks may be the most important, because they are nearest to the supergranular periods and to the observed periods near 1 AU, and because they are the broadest in frequency.
  2. The Poynting flux in the resonant peaks can be large enough, i.e. P ≈ 104–105 erg cm?2s?1, to strongly affect the solar wind.
  3. ¦δv¦ and ¦δB¦ also display resonant peaks.
  4. In the chromosphere and low corona, ¦δv ≈ 7–25 kms?1 and ¦δB¦ ≈0.3–1.0 G if P ≈104-105 erg cm?2s?1.
  5. The dependences of ¦δv¦ and ¦δB¦ on height are reduced by finite wavelength effects, except near the wave source where they are enhanced.
  6. Near the base, ¦δB¦ ≈ 350–1200 G if P ~- 104–105. This means that nonlinear effects may be important, and that some density and vertical velocity fluctuations may be associated with the Alfvén waves.
  7. Below the low corona most wave energy is kinetic, except near the base where it becomes mostly magnetic at the resonances.
  8. ?0 < δv 2 > v A or < δB 2 > v A/4π are not good estimators of the energy flux.
  9. The Alfvén wave pressure tensor will be important in the transition region only if the magnetic field diverges rapidly. But the Alfvén wave pressure can be important in the coronal hole.

The intensity?Ctime profile of Forbush decrease (FD) events observed by neutron monitors (NMs) looks like that of a geomagnetic storm as defined by the Dst index. Oh, Yi, and Kim (J.?Geophys. Res. 113, A01103, 2008) and Oh and Yi (J.?Geophys. Res. 114, A11102, 2009) classified FD events based on the amount of overlap and simultaneity of their main phase in Universal Time (UT). Oh and Yi define an FD event as simultaneous if the main phases observed by NMs distributed evenly around the Earth overlap in UT, and nonsimultaneous if they overlap only in the local time of some stations. They suggested that the occurrence mechanisms of two types of FD events may be related to interplanetary (IP) magnetic structures such as IP shocks and magnetic clouds. In their model, the simultaneity of FD events depends on the strength and propagation direction of magnetic structures overtaking the Earth. Recently, the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) mission has been able to visualize the emergence and propagation direction of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) in three dimensions in the heliosphere; thus, it is now possible to test the suggested mechanisms. One simultaneous FD event observed on 18 February 2011 may have been caused by a CME heading directly toward the Earth, which was observed on 15 February 2011 by the STEREO mission. Therefore, the simultaneity of FD events is proven to be a useful analysis tool in understanding the geoeffectiveness of solar events such as interplanetary CMEs and IP shocks.  相似文献

In this paper we review the drift theory of charged particles in electric and magnetic fields. No new physical interpretations are added to this classical topic, but through an alternative, simplified derivation of the guiding centre velocity, several complexities are eliminated and possible misconceptions of the theory are clarified. It is shown that:
  1. The curvature/gradient drift velocity in the magnetic field, averaged over a particle distribution function is to lowest order in the direction of?×B/B 2, while the average particle velocity is in the direction ofB×? P withP the scalar particle pressure.
  2. These drift directions are correct for first-order expansions of the particle distribution function, and only second-order or higher expansions change these directions.
  3. The?×B/B 2 drift, which is the standard gradient plus curvature drift, and which is usually considered as a ‘single particle’ drift, need not be ‘reconciled’ with theB×? P, or ‘macroscopic, collective’ drift, as is often asserted in the literature. They are in fact related per definition and we show how.
  4. When viewed in fixed momentum intervals (p,p+dp), the so-called Compton-Getting factor enters into the electric field (E×B)/B 2 drift term.
  5. The results are independent of the scale length of variation ofE andB, in contrast to existing drift theory. We discuss the implications of this result for three important cases.

Some useful properties of a finite energy, constant-α, force-free magnetic field B α occupying a half-space D are presented. In particular:
  1. Fourier and Green representations of B α are obtained and used to derive conditions for the existence and uniqueness of a B α having a given normal component B z on the boundary ?D.
  2. The asymptotic behaviour of B α at infinity as well as stability results against changes in the boundary condition on ?D and in the value of α are established.
  3. The energy of B α is shown to be smaller than the energy of the open field having the same B z on ?D, thus confirming an earlier conjecture (Aly, 1984).
  4. B α is proved to not be a Taylor-Heyvaerts-Priest state, in spite of the fact that its relative helicity H is finite and that it is the only solution of the Lagrange-Euler equation associated with the problem of minimizing the energy among all the fields having the same value of H and the same B z on ?D.

A clarification and discussion of the energy changes experienced by cosmic rays in the interplanetary region is presented. It is shown that the mean time rate of change of momentum of cosmic rays reckoned for a fixed volume in a reference frame fixed in the solar system is 〈p〉 =p V·G/3 (p=momentum,V is the solar wind velocity andG=cosmic-ray density gradient). This result is obtained in three ways:
  1. by a rearrangement and reinterpretation of the cosmic-ray continuity equation;
  2. by using a scattering analysis based on that of Gleeson and Axford (1967);
  3. by using a special scattering model in which cosmic-rays are trapped in ‘magnetic boxes’ moving with the solar wind.
The third method also gives the rate of change of momentum of particles within a moving ‘magnetic box’ as 〈pad = ?p ?·V/3, which is the adiabatic deceleration rate of Parker (1965). We conclude that ‘turnaround’ energy change effects previously considered separately are already included in the equation of transport for cosmic rays.  相似文献

In Paper I (Hu, 1982), we discussed the the influence of fluctuation fields on the force-free field for the case of conventional turbulence and demonstrated the general relationships. In the present paper, by using the approach of local expansion, the equation of average force-free field is obtained as (1+b)?×B 0=(α#x002B;a)B 0#x002B;a (1)×B 0#x002B;K. The average coefficientsa,a (1),b, andK show the influence of the fluctuation fields in small scale on the configurations of magnetic field in large scale. As the average magnetic field is no longer parallel to the average electric current, the average configurations of force-free fields are more general and complex than the usual ones. From the view point of physics, the energy and momentum of the turbulent structures should have influence on the equilibrium of the average fields. Several examples are discussed, and they show the basic features of the fluctuation fields and the influence of fluctuation fields on the average configurations of magnetic fields. The astrophysical environments are often in the turbulent state, the results of the present paper may be applied to the turbulent plasma where the magnetic field is strong.  相似文献

Numerical reconstruction/extrapolation of the coronal nonlinear force-free magnetic field (NLFFF) usually takes the photospheric vector magnetogram as input at the bottom boundary. The magnetic field observed at the photosphere, however, contains a force that is in conflict with the fundamental assumption of the force-free model. It also contains measurement noise, which hinders the practical computation. Wiegelmann, Inhester, and Sakurai (Solar Phys. 233, 215, 2006) have proposed to preprocess the raw magnetogram to remove the force and noise to provide better input for NLFFF modeling. In this paper we develop a new code of magnetogram preprocessing that is consistent with our extrapolation method CESE–MHD–NLFFF (Jiang, Feng, and Xiang in Astrophys. J. 755, 62, 2012; Jiang and Feng in Astrophys. J. 749, 135, 2012a). Based on the magnetic-splitting rule that a magnetic field can be split into a potential-field part and a non-potential part, we split the magnetogram and dealt with the two parts separately. The preprocessing of the magnetogram’s potential part is based on a numerical potential-field model, and the non-potential part is preprocessed using the similar optimization method of Wiegelmann, Inhester, and Sakurai (2006). The code was applied to the SDO/HMI data, and results show that the method can remove the force and noise efficiently and improve the extrapolation quality.  相似文献

The coronal magnetic field cannot be directly observed, but, in principle, it can be reconstructed from the comparatively well observed photospheric magnetic field. A?popular approach uses a nonlinear force-free model. Non-magnetic forces at the photosphere are significant, meaning the photospheric data are inconsistent with the force-free model, and this causes problems with the modeling (De Rosa et?al., Astrophys. J. 696, 1780, 2009). In this paper we present a numerical implementation of the Grad?CRubin method for reconstructing the coronal magnetic field using a magnetostatic model. This model includes a pressure force and a non-zero magnetic Lorentz force. We demonstrate our implementation on a simple analytic test case and obtain the speed and numerical error scaling as a function of the grid size.  相似文献

If all coronal mass ejections (CMEs) have flux ropes, then the CMEs should keep their helicity signs from the Sun to the Earth according to the helicity conservation principle. This study presents an attempt to answer the question from the Coordinated Data Analysis Workshop (CDAW), “Do all CMEs have flux ropes?”, by using a qualitative helicity sign comparison between interplanetary CMEs (ICMEs) and their CME source regions. For this, we select 34 CME–ICME pairs whose source active regions (ARs) have continuous SOHO/MDI magnetogram data covering more than 24 hr without data gap during the passage of the ARs near the solar disk center. The helicity signs in the ARs are determined by estimation of cumulative magnetic helicity injected through the photosphere in the entire source ARs. The helicity signs in the ICMEs are estimated by applying the cylinder model developed by Marubashi (Adv. Space. Res., 26, 55, 2000) to 16 second resolution magnetic field data from the MAG instrument onboard the ACE spacecraft. It is found that 30 out of 34 events (88 %) are helicity sign-consistent events, while four events (12 %) are sign-inconsistent. Through a detailed investigation of the source ARs of the four sign-inconsistent events, we find that those events can be explained by the local helicity sign opposite to that of the entire AR helicity (28 July 2000 ICME), incorrectly reported solar source region in the CDAW list (20 May 2005 ICME), or the helicity sign of the pre-existing coronal magnetic field (13 October 2000 and 20 November 2003 ICMEs). We conclude that the helicity signs of the ICMEs are quite consistent with those of the injected helicities in the AR regions from where the CMEs erupted.  相似文献

The first near-side X-class flare of Solar Cycle 24 occurred in February 2011 (SOL2011-02-05T01:55) and produced a very strong seismic response in the photosphere. One sunquake was reported by Kosovichev (Astrophys. J. Lett. 734, L15, 2011), followed by the discovery of a second sunquake by Zharkov, Green, Matthews et al. (Astrophys. J. Lett. 741, L35, 2011). The flare had a two-ribbon structure and was associated with a flux-rope eruption and a halo coronal mass ejection (CME) as reported in the CACTus catalogue. Following the discovery of the second sunquake and the spatial association of both sources with the locations of the feet of the erupting flux rope (Zharkov, Green, Matthews et al., Astrophys. J. Lett. 741, L35, 2011), we present here a more detailed analysis of the observed photospheric changes in and around the seismic sources. These sunquakes are quite unusual, taking place early in the impulsive stage of the flare, with the seismic sources showing little hard X-ray (HXR) emission, and strongest X-ray emission sources located in the flare ribbons. We present a directional time–distance diagram computed for the second source, which clearly shows a ridge corresponding to the travelling acoustic-wave packet and find that the sunquake at the second source happened about 45 seconds to one minute earlier than the first source. Using acoustic holography we report different frequency responses of the two sources. We find strong downflows at both seismic locations and a supersonic horizontal motion at the second site of acoustic-wave excitation.  相似文献

We carry out the adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) implementation of our solar–interplanetary space-time conservation element and solution element (CESE) magnetohydrodynamic model (SIP–CESE MHD model) using a six-component grid system (Feng, Zhou, and Wu, Astrophys. J. 655, 1110, 2007; Feng et al., Astrophys. J. 723, 300, 2010). By transforming the governing MHD equations from the physical space (x,y,z) to the computational space (ξ,η,ζ) while retaining the form of conservation (Jiang et al., Solar Phys. 267, 463, 2010), the SIP–AMR–CESE MHD model is implemented in the reference coordinates with the aid of the parallel AMR package PARAMESH available at http://sourceforge.net/projects/paramesh/ . Meanwhile, the volumetric heating source terms derived from the topology of the magnetic-field expansion factor and the minimum angular separation (at the photosphere) between an open-field foot point and its nearest coronal-hole boundary are also included. We show the preliminary results of applying the SIP–AMR–CESE MHD model for simulating the solar-wind background of different solar-activity phases by comparison with SOHO observations and other spacecraft data from OMNI. Our numerical results show overall good agreements in the solar corona and in interplanetary space with these multiple-spacecraft observations.  相似文献

We investigate multi-spacecraft observations of the 17 January 2010 solar energetic particle event. Energetic electrons and protons have been observed over a remarkable large longitudinal range at the two STEREO spacecraft and SOHO, suggesting a longitudinal spread of nearly 360 degrees at 1?AU. The flaring active region, which was on the backside of the Sun as seen from Earth, was separated by more than 100 degrees in longitude from the magnetic footpoints of each of the three spacecraft. The event is characterized by strongly delayed energetic particle onsets with respect to the flare and only small or no anisotropies in the intensity measurements at all three locations. The presence of a coronal shock is evidenced by the observation of a type II radio burst from the Earth and STEREO-B. In order to describe the observations in terms of particle transport in the interplanetary medium, including perpendicular diffusion, a 1D model describing the propagation along a magnetic field line (model 1) (Dr?ge, Astrophys. J. 589, 1027??C?1039, 2003) and the 3D propagation model (model 2) by Dr?ge et?al. (Astrophys. J. 709, 912??C?919, 2010) including perpendicular diffusion in the interplanetary medium have been applied. While both models are capable of reproducing the observations, model 1 requires injection functions at the Sun of several hours. Model 2, which includes lateral transport in the solar wind, reveals high values for the ratio of perpendicular to parallel diffusion. Because we do not find evidence for unusual long injection functions at the Sun, we favor a scenario with strong perpendicular transport in the interplanetary medium as an explanation for the observations.  相似文献

We model solar coronal mass ejections (CMEs) as expanding force-free magnetic structures and find the self-similar dynamics of configurations with spatially constant ??, where J=?? B, in spherical and cylindrical geometries, expanding spheromaks and Lundquist fields, respectively. The field structures remain force-free, under the conventional non-relativistic assumption that the dynamical effects of the inductive electric fields can be neglected. While keeping the internal magnetic field structure of the stationary solutions, expansion leads to complicated internal velocities and rotation, caused by inductive electric fields. The structure depends only on overall radius R(t) and rate of expansion $\dot{R}(t)$ measured at a given moment, and thus is applicable to arbitrary expansion laws. In case of cylindrical Lundquist fields, magnetic flux conservation requires that both axial and radial expansion proceed with equal rates. In accordance with observations, the model predicts that the maximum magnetic field is reached before the spacecraft reaches the geometric center of a CME.  相似文献

Gnevyshev [Solar Phys. 1, 107, 1967] showed that in solar cycle 19 (1954 –1965), the coronal line half-yearly average intensity at 5303 Å (green line) had actually two maxima, the first one in 1957 and the second in 1959–1960. In the present communication, the structures at solar maxima were reexamined in detail. It was noted that the two-peak structure of solar indices near sunspot (Rz) maxima was only a crude approximation. On a finer time scale (monthly values), there were generally more than three peaks, with irregular peak separations in a wide range of ~12± 6 months. The sequences were seen simultaneously (within a month or two) at many solar indices (notably the 2800 MHz radio flux) at and above the photosphere, and these can be legitimately termed ‘Gnevyshev peaks’ and ‘Gnevyshev gaps’. The open magnetic flux emanating from the Sun showed this sequence partially, some peaks matching, others not. In interplanetary space, the interplanetary parameters N (number density), V (solar wind speed), B (magnetic field) showed short-time peak structures but mostly not matching with the Rz peaks. Geomagnetic indices (aa, Dst) had peaked structures, which did not match with Rz peaks but were very well related to V and B, particularly to the product VB. The cosmic ray (CR) modulation also showed peaks and troughs near sunspot maximum, but the matching with Rz peaks was poor. Hence, none of these can be termed Gnevyshev peaks and gaps, particularly the gap between aa peaks, one near sunspot maximum and another in the declining phase, as this gap is qualitatively different from the Gnevyshev gap in solar indices.  相似文献

The problem of (dc) magnetic field energy build up in the solar atmosphere is addressed. Although large-scale current generation may be due to large-scale shearing motions in the photosphere, recently a new approach was proposed: under the assumption that the magnetic field evolves through a sequence of force-free states, Seehafer (1994) found that the energy of small-scale fluctuations may be transferred into energy of large-scale currents in an AR (the α-effect). The necessary condition for the α-effect is revealed by the presence of a predominant sign of current helicity over the volume under consideration. We studied how frequently such a condition may occur in ARs. On the basis of vector magnetic field measurements we calculated the current helicity B z · (▽ × B) z in the photosphere over the whole AR area for 40 active regions and obtained the following results:
  1. In 90% of cases there existed significant excess current helicity of some sign over the active region area. So one can suggest that the build up of large-scale currents in an active region due to small-scale fluctuations may be typical in ARs.
  2. In 82.5% of cases, the excess current helicity in the northern (southern) hemisphere was negative (positive).
The method proposed can be applied to those ARs where the determination of the predominant sign of current helicity by traditional visual inspection of Hα-patterns is not reliable.  相似文献

We present an extension of the Tappin?–?Howard (TH) phenomenological model (Tappin and Howard, Space Sci. Rev. 147, 55, 2009) for coronal mass ejection reconstruction to use interplanetary scintillation g-map data. The necessary changes to the model are discussed. We then use the modified model to reconstruct two major interplanetary disturbances observed using the Cambridge 3.6 ha Array in September 1980. We find that despite the lower cadence of IPS observations compared with white-light imagers, a consistent reconstruction can be generated which is in agreement with in-situ measurements and solar observations.  相似文献

It is shown that expressions for the global Lorentz force associated with a flaring active region derived by Fisher et al. (Solar Phys. 277, 59, 2012) can be used to estimate the Lorentz-force changes for strong fields in large structures over photospheric subdomains within active regions. Gary’s (Solar Phys. 203, 71, 2001) model for the stratified solar atmosphere is used to demonstrate that in large-scale structures with typical horizontal magnetic length scale ??300 km and with strong magnetic fields (≥?1 kG at the τ=1 opacity layer at 5000 Å), the Lorentz force acting on the photosphere may be approximated by a surface integral based on photospheric boundary data alone. These conditions cover many of the sunspot fields and major neutral lines that have been studied using Fisher et al.’s (2012) expressions over the past few years. The method gives a reasonable estimate of flare-related Lorentz-force changes based on photospheric magnetogram observations provided that the Lorentz-force changes associated with the flare have a lasting effect on the observed fields, and they are not immediately erased by post-flare equilibration processes.  相似文献

Patsourakos et al. (Astrophys. J. 817, 14, 2016) and Patsourakos and Georgoulis (Astron. Astrophys. 595, A121, 2016) introduced a method to infer the axial magnetic field in flux-rope coronal mass ejections (CMEs) in the solar corona and farther away in the interplanetary medium. The method, based on the conservation principle of magnetic helicity, uses the relative magnetic helicity of the solar source region as input estimates, along with the radius and length of the corresponding CME flux rope. The method was initially applied to cylindrical force-free flux ropes, with encouraging results. We hereby extend our framework along two distinct lines. First, we generalize our formalism to several possible flux-rope configurations (linear and nonlinear force-free, non-force-free, spheromak, and torus) to investigate the dependence of the resulting CME axial magnetic field on input parameters and the employed flux-rope configuration. Second, we generalize our framework to both Sun-like and active M-dwarf stars hosting superflares. In a qualitative sense, we find that Earth may not experience severe atmosphere-eroding magnetospheric compression even for eruptive solar superflares with energies \({\approx}\, 10^{4}\) times higher than those of the largest Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) X-class flares currently observed. In addition, the two recently discovered exoplanets with the highest Earth-similarity index, Kepler 438b and Proxima b, seem to lie in the prohibitive zone of atmospheric erosion due to interplanetary CMEs (ICMEs), except when they possess planetary magnetic fields that are much higher than that of Earth.  相似文献

Correlation and spectral analysis of solar radio flux density and sunspot number near the maximum of the sunspot cycle has indicated the existence of
  1. long period amplitude modulation of the slowly varying component (SVC) of radio emission
  2. coronal storage over a period of the order of three solar rotations
  3. fast decay (one solar rotation period or less) of gyromagnetic emissions from radio sources
  4. shift in location of chromospheric sources compared to those of either the upper corona or the photosphere.
