New data for carbon monoxide linewidths, pressure broadened by carbon dioxide at a temperature of 200°K, have been published since we wrote paper III of this series. The new data makes it possible to improve the accuracy of our previous estimate for the amount of CO in the atmosphere of Mars, based on the 2-0 band of CO. We now find 19.5±1.7 cm-atmstp of carbon monoxide in the total path for Martian surface pressures in the range of 5 to 6 mb. These results are now in agreement with those obtained from the 3-0 band of CO.  相似文献

Equipartition magnetic fields can dramatically affect the polarization of radiation emerging from accretion disc atmospheres in active galactic nuclei. We extend our previous work on this subject by exploring the interaction between Faraday rotation and absorption opacity in local, plane-parallel atmospheres with parameters appropriate for accretion discs. Faraday rotation in pure scattering atmospheres acts to depolarize the radiation field by rotating the polarization planes of photons after last scattering. Absorption opacity in an unmagnetized atmosphere can increase or decrease the polarization compared to the pure scattering case, depending on the thermal source function gradient. Combining both Faraday rotation and absorption opacity, we find the following results. If absorption opacity is much larger than scattering opacity throughout the atmosphere, then Faraday rotation generally has only a small effect on the emerging polarization because of the small electron column density along a photon mean free path. However, if the absorption opacity is not too large and it acts alone to increase the polarization, then the effects of Faraday rotation can be enhanced over those in a pure scattering atmosphere. Finally, while Faraday rotation often depolarizes the radiation field, it can in some cases increase the polarization when the thermal source function does not rise too steeply with optical depth. We confirm the correctness of the analytic calculation by Silant'ev of the high magnetic field limit of the pure scattering atmosphere, which we incorrectly disputed in our previous paper.  相似文献

This series of high quality elemental abundance analyses of mostly Main Sequence normal and peculiar B, A, and F stars defines their properties and provides data for the comparison with analyses of somewhat similar stars and with theoretical predictions. Most use high dispersion and high S/N (≥ 200) spectrograms obtained with CCD detectors at the long camera of the 1.22‐m Dominion Astrophysical Observatory telescope's coudé spectrograph. Here we expand the range of stars examined to include two relatively quiescent F supergiants. ν Her (F2 II) and 41 Cyg (F5 Ib‐II) are analyzed as consistently as possible with previous studies. These LTE fine analyses use the ATLAS9 and the WIDTH9 programs of R. L. Kurucz. High signal‐to‐noise spectrograms and high quality atomic data were employed. The derived values of these photometrically constant stars are somewhat different with the abundances of ν Her being somewhat metal‐poor and those of 41 Cyg being crudely solar‐like. Our analyses indicate that the basic results of Luck & Wepfer (1995) who also studied ν Her and 41 Cyg are not likely to be significantly changed by new studies of all their stars. This paper presents extended analyses of β UMa (A0mA1 IV‐V), α Dra (A0 III), π Dra (A2 IIIs), and κ Cep (B9 III) which have previously been studied in this series. α Dra is a metal‐poor star while κ Cep has solar abundances. Both β UMa and π Dra are Am stars. Whenever possible, more accurate and precise gf values replace older values. High S/N (200+) and high dispersion Dominion Astrophysical Observatory spectrograms to the red of previously obtained spectra supplement the observations. The derived rotational velocities are 45, 25, 26, and 23 km s–1, respectively. These LTE fine analyses use the ATLAS9 and the WIDTH9 programs of R. L. Kurucz. The results of the extended and the previous analyses are in good agreement. Thus in the past decade a significant improvement in the system of gf values has not been achieved although for many lines there have been changes. We present results of an analysis of 628 high-resolution magnetograms taken daily with the NSO Vacuum Telescope on Kitt Peak from 1975 to 1991. Motions in longitude on the solar surface are determined by a two-dimensional cross-correlation analysis of consecutive day pairs. We find that the measured rotation rate of small magnetic features, i.e., excluding active regions, is in excellent agreement with the results of the previous one-dimensional analysis of the same data (Komm, Howard, and Harvey, 1993). The polynomial fits show magnetic torsional oscillations, i.e., a more rigid rotation during cycle maximum and a more differential rotation during cycle minimum, but with smaller amplitudes than the one-dimensional analysis. The full width at half maximum of the cross-correlations is almost constant over latitude which shows that the active regions are effectively excluded. Elemental abundances of the early A stars ε Ser, 29 Vul and σ Aqr are derived consistently with previous studies of this series using spectrograms obtained with Reticon and CCD detectors. The derived abundances confirm that ε Ser is a definite Am star. 29 Vul shows evidence for a weakly operating Am star phenomenon. σ Aqr, a hot Am star prototype, has abundances similar to those of o Peg, another class prototype.  相似文献

Abstract. We have constructed a chemical reaction system in a contracting interstellar cloud. In paper (I) we have presented the details of the physical and chemical scheme and the method of solution. The results of our chemical model produce fractional abundances of H2CO, CO, OH, H2O, SO and OCS which are in good agreement with the results of observations. On the other hand, the results of chlorine-bearing species are not in agreement with those of the observations. The calculated abundances of H2CO, CO, OH, H2O, SO, OCS and Cl+ are in agreement with the results of previous theoretical studies.  相似文献

We study analytically the orbits along the asymptotic manifolds from a complex unstable periodic orbit in a symplectic 4-D Froeschlé map. The orbits are given as convergent series. We compare the analytic results by truncating the series at various orders with the corresponding numerical results and we find agreement along a more extended length, as the order of truncation increases. The agreement is improved when the parameters approach those of the stability domain. Along the manifolds no terms with small divisors appear in the series. The same result is found if we use a parametrization method along the asymptotic curves. In the case of orbits starting close to the manifolds small divisors appear, but the orbits remain close to the manifolds for an extended period of time. If the parameters of the map are close to the stable domain the orbits recede and approach the origin several times and remain confined in a certain volume around the origin for a long time before escaping to large distances. For special sets of parameters we see resonance phenomena and the orbits take particular forms near every resonance.  相似文献

An outline of the astrometric series of the ERP of their accuracy and of the results obtained from analyses of these data are given in the paper. Presently known systematic differences between the astrometric ERP series and those determined by VLBI and Lageos ranging techniques are discussed. Several arguments that justify establishing a revised abundance calibration for DDO photometry of population I red giants are presented. The components of the blanketing vector in the DDOC(45–48) vsC(42–45) diagram are determined for late-type dwarfs and giants. We have redefined the DDO cyanogen anomaly and calibrated it against metallicity. The sample of field giants now available with abundances derived from high dispersion spectroscopy is substantially larger than previously available, leading to a more accurate abundance calibration. Iso-abundance lines in theC(41–42) vsC(42–45) diagram have been determined for population IG and K giants and an iterative method for deriving abundances of these stars is described. We show that the new DDO abundances are in very good agreement with those derived from high dispersion spectroscopy. The new method improves by about 0.1 dex the DDO abundances derived for early G and/or late K giants, with respect to the δCN method of Janes (1975).  相似文献

We have completed our series of calculation of case B evolution of Population I close binaries by including a conservative case with convective overshooting and a non-conservative case without convective overshooting in this paper. To apply the results easily to binary population synthesis, we fit two formulae for the remnant mass as a function of the initial mass of the primary, the radius of the primary at the onset of Roche lobe overflow (RLOF) and the initial mass ratio, with errors less than 1.9 per cent and 3.6 per cent for the conservative and non-conservative cases, respectively. We have also made comparisons between the results in this paper and those of previous studies in this series to examine the effects of our assumptions.
We find that the remnant mass depends on when RLOF begins in the Hertzsprung gap and the dependence increases with the mass of the primary. Helium–carbon–oxygen white dwarfs are formed in this series of calculation. Both the non-conservative assumption and convective overshooting make RLOF more stable: some binaries with initial mass ratios   q i= 4.0  are dynamically stable during RLOF in all cases except for the conservative case without overshooting. From these models, we have discussed potential electron-degenerate oxygen–neon cores. Finally, we show the conditions under which one evolution scenario may be more likely than the others according to the results of previous authors.  相似文献

Oscillator strengths calculated by the STF method for selected transitions of V i and Co i have permitted to deduce, from an LTE study of weak lines, photospheric abundances in agreement with those obtained from carbonaceous chondrites. We investigate some of Tifft's recent statistical analyses of periodicities in extragalactic redshift samples. The values of the periodicities are refinements of those predicted by Lehto. The redshifts have been corrected for the apparent motion of the solar system relative to the cosmic background radiation and have been filtered by applying criteria such as 21 cm profile width and redshift. In all cases except one, our Monte-Carlo simulations show general agreement with Tifft's results. However, we find that one of his analyses is weakened by applying an inappropriate Bernoulli-trials statistic. We apply a new, more straightforward statistic that shows high statistical significance for some of the periodicities. We conclude that although some of Tifft's procedures seem to be open to some criticism, the periodicities are present at a level that is statistically significant.  相似文献

A method is suggested for empirical NLTE analyses of solar spectral lines. Special depthdependent departure coefficients (x) are introduced and the formulas are given for further application. From test calculations it is shown that the separation of the departure coefficients for the upper and the lower level from each other and from the uncertainties in several input parameters (oscillator strength times abundance, turbulent velocities and damping constant) is greatly facilitated when spectral lines are analysed on the disk, around the limb, as well as in the flash spectrum. Therefore it is necesssary that all accessible line data are used, from accurate line profiles to equivalent widths or integrated intensities. To reduce the number of independent variables the analysis should include many multiplets between a few spectroscopic terms.We discuss the advantages of translating the departure coefficients into a set of temperatures. Some published LTE and NLTE analyses are compared in terms of these temperatures. The results do not show inexplicable contradictions. For several atomic spectra the departures from LTE seem large enough to be established quantitatively by the detailed method suggested in this paper.  相似文献

In literature, there is no exact analytical solution available for determining the radius of Roche equipotential surfaces of distorted close binary systems in synchronous rotation. However, Kopal (Roche Model and Its Application to Close Binary Systems, Advances in Astronomy and Astrophysics, Academic Press, New York 1972) and Morris (Publ. Astron. Soc. Pac. 106:154, 1994) have provided the approximate analytical solutions in the form of infinite mathematical series. These series expressions have been commonly used by various authors to determine the radius of the Roche equipotential surfaces, and hence the equilibrium structures of rotating stars and stars in the binary systems. However, numerical results obtained from these approximating series expressions are not very accurate. In the present paper, we have expanded these series expressions to higher orders so as to improve their accuracy. The objective of this paper is to check, whether, there is any effect on the accuracy of these series expressions when the terms of higher orders are considered. Our results show that in most of the cases these expanded series give better results than the earlier series. We have further used these expanded series to find numerically the volume radius of the Roche equipotential surfaces. The obtained results are in good agreement with the results available in literature. We have also presented simple and accurate approximating formulas to calculate the radius of the primary component in a close binary system. These formulas give very accurate results in a specified range of mass ratio.  相似文献

We present the first light curve solutions of five binary systems selected from All Sky Automated Survey (ASAS) Catalog of Variable Stars. The light curves of the systems are analyzed and the light parameters are derived. The estimated absolute parameters of the components and the degree of contact values for all targets are also calculated. We compared our results to other known contact binaries by emphasizing the locations of the components on the mass–radius and the H–R diagram. The evolutionary statuses of the systems are also discussed. Results of our analyses confirm that the systems are contact binaries.  相似文献

Most use high dispersion and high S/N (≥ 200) spectrograms obtained with CCD detectors at the long camera of the Coudé spectrograph of the 1.22‐m Dominion Astrophysical Observatory telescope. Here we reanalyze 21 Aql with better quality spectra and increase the number of stars consistently analyzed in the spectral range B5 to A2 by analyzing three new stars for this series. In the early A stars the normal and non‐mCP stars have abundances with overlapping ranges. But more stars are needed especially in the B5 to B9 range. ξ2 Cet on average has a solar composition with a few abundances outside the solar range while both 21 Aql and ι Aql have abundances marginally less than solar. This paper presents new, detailed analyses of small-scale morphologic and topographic characteristics of martian debris aprons that support Viking-based interpretations of debris aprons as ice-rich flow features derived from local uplands. Fifty-four debris apron complexes in the eastern Hellas region of Mars were examined using Mars Global Surveyor data sets, including Mars Orbiter Camera images and Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter topographic profiles. Consistent patterns in a suite of small-scale surface textures and geomorphic features observed throughout the population reflect a history of viscous flow and surface degradation through wind ablation and loss of contained ice. A wide variety of shapes seen in topographic profile reveal variations in distribution of contained ice and different stages of apron development and degradation. The results of this study provide new evidence consistent with multiple models of apron formation, including rock glacier, debris-covered glacier, and ice-rich landslide models. Typical eastern Hellas debris aprons formed from a series of large-scale events, emplacing debris that was enriched initially or later by ground ice, complemented by small-scale mass wasting of multiple styles and postemplacement flow of apron masses.  相似文献

We report on a further analysis of the ratio of deuterium to hydrogen (D/H) using Hubble Space Telescope ( HST ) spectra of the   z = 0.701  Lyman limit system towards the quasi-stellar object (QSO) PG1718+481. Initial analyses of this absorber found it gave a high D/H value, 1.8–  3.1 × 10−4  , inconsistent with several higher redshift measurements. It is thus important to critically examine this measurement. By analysing the velocity widths of the D  i , H  i and metal lines present in this system, Kirkman et al. report that the additional absorption in the blue wing of the Lyα line cannot be D  i , with a confidence level of 98 per cent. Here we present a more detailed analysis, taking into account possible wavelength shifts between the three sets of HST spectra used in the analysis. We find that the constraints on this system are not as strong as those claimed by Kirkman et al. The discrepancy between the parameters of the blue wing absorption and the parameters expected for D  i is marginally worse than 1σ.
Tytler et al. commented on the first analysis of Webb et al., reporting the presence of a contaminating lower redshift Lyman limit system, with  log[ N (H  i )] = 16.7  at   z = 0.602  , which biases the N (H  i ) estimate for the main system. Here we show that this absorber actually has  log[ N (H  i )] < 14.6  and does not impact on the estimate of N (H  i ) in the system of interest at   z = 0.701  .
The purpose of the present paper is to highlight important aspects of the analysis which were not explored in previous studies, and hence to help refine the methods used in future analyses of D/H in quasar spectra.  相似文献

So far, the evolution of post-AGB stars is not fully understood. In particular the formation of hydrogen-deficient and hydrogen-free Central Stars of Planetary Nebulae (CSPN) is unsettled. New evolution models, which allow for the consistent treatment of the physics of late thermalpulses, promise new insights to the formation of these stars. In this paper we summarize the results of non-LTE analyses of CSPN with wind. By comparing these results with the predictions of the new evolutionmodels, open questions concerning the evolution of the stars might be answered. In addition we discuss the driving mechanism of the winds of Wolf-Rayet CSPN. New models, which account for millions of iron lines, support the assumptions that these winds are driven by radiation.  相似文献
