We have measured the decorrelation frequency (f v ) and decorrelation time (t v ) for 15 pulsars. We show by combining our data with those of others thatfv∫ DM-1.79±0.14 andt v ∫ DM-0.80±0.15 up to a dispersion measure (DM) of about 60 cm3 pc. The combined data set does not form a complete sample, but the relations obtained from our measurements on 14 pulsars, which form almost a complete sample up to 41 cm3 pc, are consistent with the above relations, suggesting that these relations are not seriously affected by selection effects. The relations are broadly in agreement with those expected from a homogeneous interstellar medium and are in disagreement with earlier conclusions by others that these relations steepen even for low-DM pulsars. The agreement suggests that the local interstellar medium is homogeneous at least up to a distance of about 2 kpc.  相似文献

The galactic distribution of pulsars and shell remnants of supernovae (SN) as investigated on the basis of newly-estimated parameters. Special attention was paid to taking into account all possible selection effects and an attempt was made to reveal a statistically-pure ensemble of objects. On the basis of this ensemble we studied the radial andz-distribution of pulsars and supernova remnants (SNR).It is shown that the radial distribution of both objects is considered to have an annular structure with the maximum surface density at a distance of 4.5–5.3 kpc (if the distance of the Sun from the galactic centre is assumed to be equal to 8.5 kpc). The scle-height of the progenitors of SNRs is not more than 110 pc and only 15% of the SNRs, whose progenitors may also be massive runaway stars, are situated at 300 pc. The mean application of the pulsars is not more than 300 pc which agrees with the hypothesis about the genetic connection with type-II SN outbursts at the kinematic aget k5×106 yr and thez-component of spatial velocity beingV z=120 km s–1.The possible precursors of type-I SNRs by the shape of their radial distribution in late spirals and the various model calculations given in the literature, are also discussed.  相似文献

Observations of the H272α recombination line towards the galactic centre show features near VLSR= 0, −50 and + 36 kms−1. We have combined the parameters of these features with the available H166α measurements to obtain the properties of the ionized gas present along the line of sight and also in the ‘3 kpc arm’. For the line-of-sight ionized gas we get an electron density around 7 cm−3 and a pathlength through it ∼ 10–60 pc. The emission measure and the electron temperature are in the range 500–2900 pc cm−6 and 2000–6000 K. respectively. The ionized gas in the 3 kpc arm has an electron density of 30 cm−3 and extends over 9 pc along the line of sight if we assume an electron temperature of 104 K. Using the available upper limit to the intensity of the H351α recombination line, we show that the distributed ionized gas responsible for the dispersion of pulsar signals should have a temperature >4500 K. and a minimum filling factor of 20 per cent. We also show that recombination lines from the ‘warm ionized’ gas proposed by McKee & Ostriker (1977) should be detectable in the frequency range 100–150 MHz towards the galactic centre with the sensitivity available at present.  相似文献

The combination of dispersion measures of pulsars, distances from the model of Cordes & Lazio (2002) and emission measures from the WHAM survey enabled a statistical study of electron densities and filling factors of the diffuse ionized gas (DIG) in the Milky Way. The emission measures were corrected for absorption and contributions from beyond the pulsar distance. For a sample of 157 pulsars at |b | > 5. and 60° < ℓ < 360°, located in mainly interarm regions within about 3 kpc from the Sun, we find that: (1) The average volume filling factor along the line of sight and the mean density in ionized clouds are inversely correlated: ( ) = (0.0184 ± 0.0011) –1.07 ± 0.03 for the ranges 0.03 < < 2 cm–3 and 0.8 > > 0.01. This relationship is very tight. The inverse correlation of and causes the well‐known constancy of the average electron density along the line of sight. As (z ) increases with distance from the Galactic plane |z |, the average size of the ionized clouds increases with |z |. (2) For |z| < 0.9 kpc the local density in clouds n c(z ) and local filling factor f (z ) are inversely correlated because the local electron density n e(z ) = f (z )n c(z ) is constant. We suggest that f (z ) reaches a maximum value of >0.3 near |z | = 0.9 kpc, whereas n c(z ) continues to decrease to higher |z |, thus causing the observed flattening in the distribution of dispersion measures perpendicular to the Galactic plane above this height. (3) For |z | < 0.9 kpc the local distributions n c(z ), f (z ) and (z ) have the same scale height which is in the range 250 < h ≲ 500 pc. (4) The average degree of ionization of the warm atomic gas (z ) increases towards higher |z | similarly to (z ). Towards |z | = 1 kpc, (z ) = 0.24 ± 0.05 and (z ) = 0.24 ± 0.02. Near |z | = 1 kpc most of the warm, atomic hydrogen is ionized. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

We present the results of a search for carbon recombination lines in the Galaxy at 34.5 MHz (C575α) made using the dipole array at Gauribidanur near Bangalore. Observations made towards 32 directions resulted in detections of lines, in absorption at nine positions. Followup observations at 328 MHz (C272α) using the Ooty Radio Telescope detected these lines in emission. A VLA D-array observation of one of the positions at 330 MHz yielded no detection implying a lower limit of 10′ for the angular size of the line forming region. The longitude-velocity distribution of the observed carbon lines indicate that the line forming regions are located mainly between 4 kpc and 7 kpc from the Galactic centre. Combining our results with published carbon recombination line data near 76 MHz (Erickson, McConnell & Anantharamaiah 1995), we obtain constraintson the physical parameters of the line forming regions. We find thatif the angular size of the line forming regions is ≥ 4°, then the range of parameters that fit the data are:T e =20–40 K,n e ∼ 0.1–0.3 cm−3 and pathlengths ∼ 0.07–0.9 pc which may correspond to thin photodissociated regions around molecular clouds. On the other hand, if the line forming regions are ∼ 2° in extent, then warmer gas (T e ∼ 60–300 K) with lower electron densities (n e ∼ 0.03–0.05 cm−3) extending over several tens of parsecs along the line of sight and possibly associated with atomic HI gas can fit the data. Based on the range of derived parameters, we suggest that the carbon line regions are most likely associated with photo-dissociation regions.  相似文献

An empirical relation which relates the 408 MHz galactic continuum background temperature (408GCBT) to dispersion measures, position and radio-luminosity of 325 pulsars is obtained by means of multple stepwise regression analysis. This relation showns that pulsars may be considered as galactic probes for the distribution of 408GCBT and interstellar electron density (IED) in interstellar medium (ISM).Peculiar pulsars (O-C±2.5) point out galactic regions where the observedT 408 are higher (or lower) andn e lower (or higher) than the averaged ones.Normal pulsars (–2.5T 408 andn e are in agreement, on, the average.Standard pulsars (O-C±0.05) show galactic regions where observed and computedT 408 andn e are in good agreement. Recent models of pulsar disk systems, suggested by Michel and Dessler (1981) could justify the conclusions drawn for peculiar pulsars having O-C>2.5.  相似文献

A method is proposed for constructing a map of the electron density distribution in the galactic plane. Data on the dispersion measures DM of more than 1500 pulsars and their distances, found by an independent method, are used. The independent distances of the pulsars are estimated using an empirical relation of the form LP α β W δ between the radio luminosity L of the pulsars and their periods P, the rate of change . of their periods, and the half width W of their pulses. A map of the electron density distribution in the galactic plane within a ±400 pc layer is provided. __________ Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 49, No. 2, pp. 277–287 (May 2006).  相似文献

Faraday rotation data on 40 pulsars are used in a detailed study of the magnetic field and its fluctuations in the direction of the spiral arm of Sagittarius. These results mostly agree with standard models for the galactic magnetic field. A magnetic field on the order of 3.2 G is directed from galactic longitude l 0=55° (toward the sun). However, an asymmetry has been found in the degrees of rotation relative to a plane lying in the southern hemisphere parallel to the galactic plane and at a distance of 50-60 pc from it. All the pulsars with measures of dispersion greater than 30 pc·cm-3 and lying to the north of this plane have positive measures of rotation which increase linearly with distance, while the pulsars lying to the south of this plane have unusually absolutely low negative measures of rotation. We propose that the spiral arm of Sagittarius lies entirely to the north of this plane, while the negative measures of rotation of the pulsars below this plane are caused by the magnetic field of the halo of the southern hemisphere of the galaxy. The magnetic field in the arm of Sagittarius is regular to a great extent and its fluctuating component is roughly half the regular component.  相似文献

The relevant data for the known 147 pulsars are presented in graphical and tabular forms. Various data correlations are discussed, and a detailed analysis of pulsar dispersion measures and distances is given. The range of the electron densities in the diffuse interstellar medium is found to be 0.01 cm–3n e0.1 cm–3, and n e0.03 cm–3. The dispersion scale height for pulsars is found to be 5.9±0.7 pc cm–3 implying a linear scale height of 200 pc, which is much smaller than the electron scale height of our Galaxy.Astrophysics and Space Science Review Paper.  相似文献

Based on a large volume of statistical data it is shown that the spatial distributions of radio pulsars in the galaxy with characteristic ages T ≤ 10 6 years and T > 106 years differ significantly. The overwhelming majority of the pulsars with T ≤ 10 6 years lie within a narrow band of width 400 pc around the galactic plane. A large portion of the pulsars with T > 106 years is concentrated outside this zone. In the case of younger pulsars, a larger fraction of them lies within the confines of the above mentioned zone. It is also shown that pulsars with T ≤ 10 6 years and the remnants of supernova explosions have essentially the same spatial distribution. These facts support the existence of a relationship between pulsars and supernova remnants, as well as the acquisition of high spatial velocities by pulsars during their birth. __________ Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 49, No. 1, pp. 103–110 (February 2006).  相似文献

The density distributions of the two main components in interstellar hydrogen are calculated using 21 cm line data from the Berkeley Survey and the Pulkovo Survey. The narrow, dense component (state I of neutral hydrogen) has a Gaussianz-distribution with a scale-height of 50 pc in the local zones (the galactic disk). For the wide, tenuous component (hydrogen in state II) we postulate a distribution valid in the zones where such a material predominates (70 pc?z? 350 pc the galactic stratum) i.e., $$n_H \left( z \right) = n_H \left( 0 \right)exp \left( { - \left( {z/300{\text{ }}pc} \right)^{3/2} } \right).$$ Similar components are found in the dust distribution and in the available stellar data reaching sufficiently highz-altitudes. The scale-heights depend on the stellar type: the stratum in M III stars is considerably wider than in A stars (500–700 pc against 300 pc). The gas to dust ratio is approximately the same in both components: 0.66 atom cm?3 mag?1 kpc in the galactic plane. A third state of the gas is postulated associating it the observed free electron stratum at a scale-height of 660 pc (hydrogen fully ionized at high temperatures). The ratio between the observed dispersions in neutral hydrogen (thermal width plus turbulence) and the total dispersions corresponding to the real inner energies in the medium is obtained by a comparison with the dispersion distribution σ(z) of the different stellar types associated with the disk and the stratum $$\sigma ^2 \left( {total} \right) = \sigma ^2 \left( {21{\text{ cm line}}} \right) \cdot {\text{ }}Q^2 ,$$ from which we graphically obtainedQ 2=2.9 ± 0.3, although that number could be lower in the densest parts of the spiral arms. Its dependence on magnetic field and cosmic rays is analysed, indicating equipartition of the different energy components in the interstellar medium and consistency with the observed values of the magnetic field: i.e., fluctuations with an average of ~ 3 μG (associated with the disk) in a homogeneous background of ~ 1 μG (associated with the stratum). A minimum and maximumK z-force are obtained assuming extreme conditions for the total density distribution (gas plus stars). TheK z-force obtained from the interstellar gas in its different states using approximations of the Boltzmann equation is a reasonable intermediate case between maximum and minimumK z. The mass density obtained in the galactic plane is 0.20±0.05M pc?3, and the results indicate that the galactic disk is somewhat narrower and denser than has usually been believed. The effects of wave-like distributions of matter in thez-coordinate are analysed in relation with theK z-force, and comparisons with theoretical results are performed. A qualitative model for the galactic field of force is postulated together with a classification of the different zones of the Galaxy according to their observed ranges in velocity dispersions and the behaviour of the potential well at differentz-altitudes. The disk containing at least two-thirds of the total mass atz<100 pc, the stratum containing one-third or less of the total mass atz≤600–800 pc, and the halo at higherz-altitudes with a small fraction of such a mass which is difficult to evaluate.  相似文献

Supernova Remnants (SNRs) are the most likely sources of the galactic cosmic rays up to energies of about 1015 eV/nuc. The large scale shock waves of SNRs are almost ideal sites to accelerate particles up to these highly non-thermal energies by a first order Fermi mechanism which operates through scattering of the particles at magnetic irregularities. In order to get an estimate on the total amount of the explosion energy E SNconverted into high energy particles the evolution of a SNR has to be followed up to the final merging with the interstellar medium. This can only be done by numerical simulations since the non-linear modifications of the shock wave due to particle acceleration as well as radiative cooling processes at later SNR stages have to be considered in such investigations. Based on a large sample of numerical evolution calculations performed for different ambient densities n ext, SN explosion energies, magnetic fields etc. we discuss the final ‘yields’ of cosmic rays at the final SNR stage where the Mach number of the shock waves drops below 2. At these times the cosmic rays start to diffuse out of the remnant. In the range of external densities of10-2n ext/[cm-3] ≤ 30 we find a the total acceleration efficiency of about 0.15 E SN with an increase up to 0.24 E SN at maximum for an external density of n ext = 10 cm-3. Since for the larger ambient densities radiative cooling can reduce significantly the total thermal energy content of the remnant dissipation of Alfvén waves can provide an important heating mechanism for the gas at these later stages. From the collisions of the cosmic rays with the thermal plasma neutral pions are generated which decay subsequently into observable γ-rays above 100 MeV. Hence, we calculate these γ-ray luminosities of SNRs and compare them with current upper limits of ground based γ-raytelescopes. The development of dense shells due to cooling of the thermal plasma increases the γ-ray luminosities and e.g. an external density of n ext = 10 cm-3 with E SN = 1051 erg can lead to a γ-ray flux above 10-6 ph cm-2 s-1 for a remnant located at a distance of 1 kpc. The kinematics of the Sagittarius (R = 5.7 kpc),Carina (R = 6.5 kpc), Cygnus (R = 6.8 kpc), and Perseus (R = 8.2 kpc) arms suggests the existence of two spiral patterns in the Galaxy that rotate with different speeds. The inner spiral pattern that is represented by the Sagittarius arm rotates with the speed of the bar, Ωb = 60 ± 5 km s−1 kpc−1, while the outer spiral pattern that includes the Carina, Cygnus, and Perseus arms rotates with a lower speed, Ωs = 12–22 km s−1 kpc−1.The existence of an outer slow tightly wound spiral pattern and an inner fast spiral pattern can be explained by numerically simulating the dynamics of outer pseudorings. The outer Lindblad resonance of the bar must be located between the Sagittarius and Carina arms. The Cygnus arm appears as a connecting link between the fast and slow spiral patterns.  相似文献

The gravitational instability of expanding shells evolving in a homogeneous and static medium is discussed. In the low density environment (n = 1 cm-3), the fragmentation starts in shells with diameters of a few 100 pc and fragment masses are in the range of 5 × 103 - 106 M . In the high density environment (n = 105 - 107 cm-3), shells fragment at diameters of pc producing clumps of stellar masses. The mass spectrum in both environments is approximated by a power law dN/dmm -2.3. This is close to the slope of the stellar IMF. To reproduce the observed mass spectrum of clouds (the spectral index close to ∼ -2.0) we have to assume, that the cloud formation time is independent of the cloud size, similarly to the Jeans unstable medium. We have developed a method of searching for the connections between the isolated radio pulsars and supernova remnants, based on the analysis of their kinematic characteristics. We investigate fairly young (τ ch ≲ 106 yr) radio pulsars with known proper motions and estimated distances (dispersion measures), and supernova remnants located no more than 1–2 kpc away from them. Using a standard empirical radial velocity distribution, we have constructed 100–200 thousand trajectories for each of these pulsars, tracing back their possible motion in the Galactic gravitational field on a time-scale of a few million years. The probabilities of their close encounters with the SNRs at epochs consistent with the age of the pulsar are analyzed. When these probabilities exceed considerably their reference values, obtained by assuming a purely random encounter between the objects, we conclude that the pulsars may have originated in the SNRs under consideration. Out of eight preselected pairs of pulsar-SNR association candidates, two pairs, J 1829-1751 / G16.2-2.7 and J 1833-0827 / G24.7-0.6 may have a common origin with a high probability.  相似文献

The system of globular clusters in the Galaxy is used in order to locate the position of the galactic centre and, consequently, to determine the galacto-centric distance of the Sun,R 0. The space distribution and metallicities of the whole sample of known globular clusters are taken into account, and the obtained results indicate that 8.6 >R 0 (kpc) > 6.4. Analysis of a selected sample of clusters further suggests thatR 0 = 7.6 ± 0.4 kpc.  相似文献

We report multi-frequency radio continuum and hydrogen radio recombination line observations of HII regions near l = 24.8°, b = 0.1° using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) at 1.28 GHz (n = 172), 0.61 GHz (n = 220) and the Very Large Array (VLA) at 1.42 GHz (n = 166). The region consists of a large number of resolved HII regions and a few compact HII regions as seen in our continuum maps, many of which have associated infrared (IR) point sources. The largest HII region at l = 24.83° and b = 0.1° is a few arcmins in size and has a shell-type morphology. It is a massive HII region enclosing ∼550 M with a linear size of 7 pc and an rms electron density of ∼110 cm−3 at a kinematic distance of 6 kpc. The required ionization can be provided by a single star of spectral type O5.5. We also report detection of hydrogen recombination lines from the HII region at l = 24.83° and b = 0.1° at all observed frequencies near V lsr = 100 km s−1. We model the observed integrated line flux density as arising in the diffuse HII region and find that the best fitting model has an electron density comparable to that derived from the continuum. We also report detection of hydrogen recombination lines from two other HII regions in the field.  相似文献

I present updated compilations of both observational data and theoretical predictions concerning excess line width and sizes in astrophysical bodies. After removing two well-known broadening mechanisms (thermal width and width due to large scale motions such as expansion), I analyse statistically the excess line widthW excess. The excess line width shows a changing behavior with object sizeR, of the formW excess ~R q. Taking all objects together, I find thatq = 0.55 with s.d. = 0.05. This resultextends previous studies to cover 5 decades in sizes, from 0.01 pc up to 1000 pc. Taking only objects withR < 1 pc, I find thatq = 0.7 with s.d.=0.1, while taking only objects withR > 1 pc givesq = 0.5 with s.d.=0.1; thus a steeper (not flatter) value ofq at smallR may be possible. Previous claims to derive a law for objects of sizesR > 1 kpc are discussed, in relation to the problem of removing obvious large scale motions from the observed line width. Thus several models with predictedq values between 0 and 1 can be eliminated, and the remaining ones could allow weak magnetic effects on the line widths.  相似文献

The diffuse soft X-ray background in 0.07∼ 2.0 keV has been observed along a small circle with the angular width of 10– covering b=—57– ∼ 77– and crossing the galactic plane at l=125– and 283–. Observed spectra are well fitted with models emitted from a thin hot gas with two or multi-temperature components and attenuated by a slab or interspersed neutral gas clouds. However the multi-temperature component model has some difficulties to explain the diffuse component expected from observations of OVI absorption lines. The two temperature component model with interspersed clouds consistently interprets a physical state of the hot interstellar medium. It turned out that the hot interstellar medium interspersed with neutral clouds of a representative hydrogen column density of 1× 1020 cm-2has two temperature components (105.8 K,(1.2-4.5)× 106 K) and a disk-like distribution with the thickness of 580(± 100). {(p/k)/104cm-3 K} -2 pc at the pressure of p/k cm-3 K along the galactic plane. Its pressure (p/k) is obtained to be 1.4(+0.7,-0.5)× 104cm-3 K, assuming that hot gases responsible for the diffuse soft X-rays and OVI ions are in pressure equilibrium. This interpretation qualitatively agrees with the theoretical prediction proposed by McKee and Ostriker. We present here rigorous analytical solutions for the Boltzmann-Poisson equation concerning the distribution of stars above the galactic plane. The number density of stars is considered to follow a behaviour n(m,0) ∼H(m - m0)m−x, wherem is the mass of a star andx an arbitrary exponent greater than 2 and also the velocity dispersion of the stars is assumed to behave as < v2(m)> ∼ m−θ the exponent θ being arbitrary and positive. It is shown that an analytic expression can be found for the gravitational field Kz, in terms of confluent hypergeometric functions, the limiting trends being Kz∼z for z →0, while Kz constant for z → infinity. We also study the behaviour of < |z(m)|2>,i.e. the dispersion of the distance from the galactic disc for the stars of massm. It is seen that the quantity < |z(m)|2> mt-θ, for m→ t, while it departs significantly from this harmonic oscillator behaviour for stars of lighter masses. It is suggested that observation of < |z(m)|2> can be used as a probe to findx and hence obtain information about the mass spectrum.  相似文献
