We present N -body simulations of galaxy groups embedded in a common halo of matter. We study the influence of the different initial conditions upon the evolution of the group and show that denser configurations evolve faster, as expected. We then concentrate on the influence of the initial radial density profile of the common halo and of the galaxy distribution. We select two kinds of density distributions, a singular profile (modelled by a Hernquist distribution) and a profile with a flat core (modelled by a Plummer sphere). In all cases we witness the formation of a central massive object owing to mergings of individual galaxies and to accretion of stripped material, but both its formation history and its properties depend heavily on the initial distribution. In Hernquist models the formation is caused by a 'burst' of mergings in the inner parts, owing to the large initial concentration of galaxies in the centre. The merging rate is much slower in the initial phases of the evolution of a Plummer distribution, where the contribution of accretion to the formation of the central object is much more important. The central objects formed within Plummer distributions have projected density profiles which are not in agreement with the radial profiles of observed brightest cluster members, unless the percentage of mass in the common halo is small. In contrast, the central object formed in initially cusped models has projected radial profiles in very good agreement with those of brightest cluster members, sometimes also showing luminosity excess over the r 1/4 law in the outer parts, as is observed in cD galaxies.  相似文献

We have investigated ROSAT X-ray data of OB stars to search for evidence of time variability in the X-ray emission from early-type stars. As an example for such studies we present a detailed variability analysis for our two program stars Ori and Ori which have been multiply observed with ROSAT. The long-term analysis of both stars now covers a time range of 2.5 years and includes six pointed PSPC observations, an additional pointed HRI observation of Ori and the ROSAT all-sky survey data of both stars. Over a long time range the X-ray light curves of Ori and Ori show no evidence for variability. In the case of Ori we detected a moderate increase in X-ray count rate during a period of 2 days which can be explained as a strong shock propagating in the wind of an O-type star.  相似文献

Recent far ultraviolet spectra of four nightside auroras observed with the extreme ultraviolet (e.u.v.) spectrometer abroad the STP 78?1 satellite (Bowyer et al., 1981) are discussed in terms of two secondary electron flux distribution models. One of these is based on calculations published by Rees and Maeda (1973) and the other on electron flux observations. Using the 1084 Å NII line as the norm, the relative intensities of several lines in the range 900–1400 Å could be fitted equally well by either model, indicating that some of these emission ratios are somewhat independent of the energy dependence of the secondary electron flux. The ratio of the NI 1243 Å to 1084 Å emission is seen to yield an effective correlation for the other observed emissions and a reasonably consistent estimate of the penetration depth of the aurora.  相似文献

Cyclotron microwave emission from magnetic stars is considered, assuming that they have coronae with the temperatureT107 K and the emission measureEM1054 cm–3. It has been shown that the cyclotron radiation from a star with a dipole magnetic field has a specific spectrum with a maximum in the frequency rangesv o/2 >v >sv o/2 (s being the number of cyclotron harmonic, andv o the gyrofrequency corresponding to the polar magnetic field) and radiation flux decreasing towards lower frequencies asv 4/3. The frequency of the spectrum maximum depends on the angle between the line-of-sight and the magnetic axis of the star. The observed radiation from a rotating magnetic star can be modulated with a modulation depth of about 0.2 at frequencies near maximum. The radiation is partially circularly-polarized in the sense of an extraordinary mode. The degree of polarization is almost constant at frequenciesv >sv o/2 and increases with frequency atv >sv o/2. The estimation of cyclotron radio fluxes of the nearest magnetic stars shows that they are observable in microwaves by means of modern radio astronomy.  相似文献

We present high-resolution spectroscopic observations of 21 B-type stars, selected from the Edinburgh–Cape Blue Object Survey. Model atmosphere analyses confirm that 14 of these stars are young, main-sequence B-type objects with Population I chemical compositions. The remaining seven are found to be evolved objects, including subdwarfs, horizontal branch and post-AGB objects. A kinematical analysis shows that all 14 young main-sequence stars could have formed in the disc and subsequently been ejected into the halo. These results are combined with the analysis of a previous subsample of stars taken from the Survey. Of the complete sample, 31 have been found to be young, main-sequence objects, with formation in the disc, and subsequent ejection into the halo, again being found to be a plausible scenario.  相似文献

We report the results of our study of magnetic fields in a sample of 15 Be stars using spectropolarimetric data obtained at the European Southern Observatory with the multi-mode instrument FORS 1 installed at the 8m Kueyen telescope. We detect weak photospheric magnetic fields in four stars, HD56014, HD148184, HD155806, and HD181615. We note that for HD181615 the evolutionary status is not obvious due to the fact that it is a binary system currently observed in the initial rapid phase of mass exchange between the two components. Further, we notify the possible presence of distinct circular polarisation features in the circumstellar components of Ca II H&K in three stars, HD58011, HD117357, and HD181615, hinting at a probable presence of magnetic fields in the circumstellar mass loss disks of these stars. We emphasize the need for future spectropolarimetric observations of Be stars with detected magnetic fields to study the temporal evolution of their magnetic fields and the correlation of magnetic field properties with dynamical phenomena taking place in the gaseous circumstellar disks of these stars. A sensitive spectrograph for rocket observations of celestial objects in the 910–1250Å band is described. The instrument incorporates a variety of new technologies that allow unprecedented sensitivity in this difficult, but scientifically rewarding, band. It includes a diamond-turned Wolter-Schwarzschild Type II telescope, a conventional Rowland Circle spectrograph, and resistive anode/micro-channel plate detectors. It has been launched twice from Woomera, Australia where it performed the only observations of SN1987a in its bandpass and discovered a new feature in the diffuse ultraviolet background.  相似文献

The EUV (200–911 Å), FUV (912–1750 Å), and NUV (1750–3200 Å) spectral energy distribution of exoplanet host stars has a profound influence on the atmospheres of Earth-like planets in the habitable zone. The stellar EUV radiation drives atmospheric heating, while the FUV (in particular, Lyα) and NUV radiation fields regulate the atmospheric chemistry: the dissociation of H2O and CO2, the production of O2 and O3, and may determine the ultimate habitability of these worlds. Despite the importance of this information for atmospheric modeling of exoplanetary systems, the EUV/FUV/NUV radiation fields of cool (K and M dwarf) exoplanet host stars are almost completely unconstrained by observation or theory. We present observational results from a Hubble Space Telescope survey of M dwarf exoplanet host stars, highlighting the importance of realistic UV radiation fields for the formation of potential biomarker molecules, O2 and O3. We conclude by describing preliminary results on the characterization of the UV time variability of these sources.  相似文献

Predictions of solar flux and limb darkening calculated from the Utrecht Reference Model, the Mutschlecner model, and the Bilderberg Continuum Atmosphere are compared with the rocket ultraviolet observations. The calculations employ recent experimental and theoretical determinations of metallic photo-ionization cross-sections. The spectral region between the continuous absorption edge from the first excited level of silicon at 1680 Å and the ground-state absorption edge at 1525 Å proves particularly significant for an investigation of the solar temperature minimum. The analysis indicates that the solar temperature minimum is relatively broad and flat, having a nearly constant temperature over somewhat more than a scale height, and that the chromospheric rise occurs just above 5000 = 10–4 or so. Within the assumptions of the present models, a satisfactory interpretation of the ultraviolet spectrum can be reached with a temperature minimum of 4600° ± 100 °K.  相似文献

We present high-resolution (R~20,000) spectra in the blue and the far red of circumnuclear star-forming regions (CNSFRs) in three early-type spirals (NGC3351, NGC2903 and NGC3310), which have allowed the study of the kinematics of the stars and the ionized gas in these structures and, for the first time, the derivation of their dynamical masses for the first two. In some cases, these regions, about 100 to 150 pc in size, are composed of several individual star clusters with sizes between 1.5 and 4.9 pc, estimated from Hubble Space Telescope images. The stellar dispersions have been obtained from the Calcium triplet (CaT) lines at λ λ 8494, 8542, 8662 Å, while the gas velocity dispersions have been measured by means of Gaussian fits to the Hβ and [Oiii]λ 5007 Å lines in the high-dispersion spectra. Values of the stellar velocity dispersions are between 30 and 68 km?s?1. We apply the virial theorem to estimate dynamical masses of the clusters, assuming that systems are gravitationally bounded and spherically symmetric, and using previously measured sizes. The measured values of the stellar velocity dispersions yield dynamical masses of the order of 107 to 108 M for the entire CNSFRs. Stellar and gas velocity dispersions are found to differ by about 20 to 30 km?s?1, with the Hβ emission lines being narrower than both the stellar lines and the [Oiii]λ 5007 Å lines. The douby-ionized oxygen, on the other hand, exhibits velocity dispersions comparable to those of the stars or, in some cases, even larger. We have found indications of the presence of two different kinematical components in the ionized gas of the regions. We have mapped the velocity field in the central kpc of the spiral galaxies NGC3351 and NGC2903. For the first object, the radial velocity curve shows deviations from circular motions for the ionized hydrogen consistent with its infall towards the central regions of the galaxy, at a velocity of about 25 km?s?1. For NGC3310, we present preliminary results for the velocity dispersions for one of the two observed slit position angles, two CNSFRs and the nucleus.  相似文献

Near-normal incidence reflectance measurements in the interval 1026–1640 Å were performed on four silicates already studied in the visible and infrared by Pollack et al. (1973). We use a Kramers-Kronig analysis of these data to calculate the complex index of refraction m = n ? ik. New transmission measurements improve the determination of k in the interval 2500–4500 Å, except for andesite, which is more opaque than found by Pollack et al.  相似文献

The diffuse ultraviolet radiation field is seen over the entire sky and is a tracer of both the hot (in the form of lines such as CIV and OVI) and cold component (in the form of interstellar dust or molecular hydrogen) of the interstellar medium. Observations over the last 40 years have been continually pushing the boundaries of the available instrumentation but are now bearing fruit in a much better definition of the radiation and an understanding of its constituents, both foreground, such as airglow or zodiacal light, and cosmic.
