For the past three centuries, the economic geography of the global coffee sector has been characterized by the supply of beans from tropical countries for consumption in North America and Europe, with various modes of value chain coordination enacted by lead firms to ensure reliable and affordable supply. This pattern is now fundamentally changing, with growth in coffee consumption in emerging markets, including China, exceeding that in established markets. But China is not only a growing consumer market, it is less well known that rapidly increasing agricultural production in Yunnan province of southwest China has also inserted the country as an important source region for coffee, and this has been pivotal in facilitating the emergence of Chinese lead firms in the sector. This article presents the emergence of China, and Chinese firms, at a critical juncture for the structure and governance of the global value chain for coffee. The processes through which this is occurring are outlined, and the implications for regional development prospects across Southeast Asia are discussed. We argue that the changing economic geography of coffee value chains, and their increasing driven‐ness by Chinese actors, is starting to reshape the regional coffee industry in profoundly new ways.  相似文献

Brazil is the largest economy in Latin America and the world's leading producer and exporter of coffee. Smallholders are the predominant producers of Brazilian coffee and have been significantly impacted by post-ISI (import substitution industrialisation) neoliberal reforms that swept the nation's agricultural sector beginning in the 1980s. These reforms stimulated increased coffee production while simultaneously diminishing state interventions, including agricultural subsidies, farmer credits, research and development programmes, extension services, and rural development initiatives. These changes were closely followed by major restructuring of the global coffee market and the elimination of international coffee export quotas. Our research joins a growing body of recent literature exploring how changes related to market liberalisation and globalisation affect localities and regions where producers supply coffee for conventional markets. Through a case study, we describe the impacts of neoliberal globalisation on the lives, livelihoods, and environment of small-scale coffee producers in Minas Gerais, Brazil. We explore how neoliberal reform, reflected in the specific historical, geographical, and environmental context of Brazilian coffee production, has resulted in the increased marginalisation of small-scale farmers, the degradation of soils, and overall rural decline.  相似文献

Fluctuating global commodity prices affect the livelihoods of millions of tropical farmers worldwide. In recent years, systemic oversupply of many tropical agricultural products, grown in countries such as Indonesia, has meant that agricultural incomes have continuously fallen below subsistence levels. Within an increasingly open global trade regime, along with the limited ability of governments to protect domestic farm prices, quality-informed product differentiation appears to offer an escape route from the trap of low commodity prices. However, ownership and governance of quality constructions are fundamental to determining who benefits from such differentiation. This paper examines the use of geographical identities as a specific tool for value-adding in agricultural produce, presenting the case of specialty coffee production in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The potential for producer-driven geographical indications compete with corporate-driven quality constructions, where the latter are able to appropriate place-related quality associations by using trademarks, vertical integration and tightly coordinated supply chain controls. An emergent politic of quality governance and ownership in global commodity chains reveals the highly restricted institutional terrain within which growers of specialty coffee might attempt to retain a higher share of the economic rent associated with quality production.  相似文献

如何将港口文化资源禀赋转化为创意产业,促进滨海港口地区复兴是后工业社会全球沿海港口地区发展研究的核心论题。本文探析了文化资源到创意产业的转化潜能、介质、路径、模式和运作机制,并在文化经济地理学视角下架构其实证研究范式,进而以中国舟山普陀区的木帆船、沙雕等创意产业为例,采用文化经济地理学方法调查了创意产品生产过程的项目网络特征。研究发现:港口文化资源转化为创意产业的适宜条件是由创意、资本、管理等要素结网构成创意场域,亦即在市场主导下将文化资源与现代创意、媒介、市场需求等网络式融合。最后提出促推浙江港口地区文化资源发展创意产业可持续发展的建设的建议。  相似文献

Ethiopian coffee price is highly fluctuated and has significant effect on the economy of the country. Conducting a research on forecasting coffee price has theoretical and practical importance.This study aims at forecasting the coffee price in Ethiopia. We used daily closed price data of Ethiopian coffee recorded in the period 25 June 2008 to 5 January 2017 obtained from Ethiopia commodity exchange (ECX) market to analyse coffee prices fluctuation. Here, the nature of coffee price is non-stationary and we apply the Kalman filtering algorithm on a single linear state space model to estimate and forecast an optimal value of coffee price. The performance of the algorithm for estimating and forecasting the coffee price is evaluated by using root mean square error (RMSE). Based on the linear state space model and the Kalman filtering algorithm, the root mean square error (RMSE) is 0.000016375, which is small enough, and it indicates that the algorithm performs well.  相似文献

Antigua and Barbuda is rapidly developing a tourism industry built around a marketed perception of a healthy marine and coastal environment. Yet economic indicators suggest that Antigua and Barbuda is overexploiting its marine resources, particularly its fish and coral reef communities. Although its marine resources remain relatively healthy, Antigua and Barbuda will jeopardise the ecological basis of its economic growth and sustainability if current exploitation rates continue. We compare the current situation and economic trends of Antigua and Barbuda's tourism and commercial fishery industries to those of Jamaica and other OECS member states. Jamaica is suggested as a cautionary example of the potential socioeconomic and ecological impacts caused by resource overexploitation and mismanagement within the various economic sectors. Antigua and Barbuda is at a crossroads. The 'Jamaica path' leads to large-scale resource depletion, fishery collapse, and a mass tourism industry that can operate independent of a healthy environment. Alternatively, it can pursue a path that seeks to conserve its marine resources. Antigua and Barbuda will be better able to protect its sustainability both for commercial fishing interests and its growing high-end destination tourism industry. To this end, Antigua and Barbuda has developed a network of marine-protected areas along the northeastern coast of Antigua, an area popular with both fishers and tourists.  相似文献

土地资源是最重要的自然资源,低丘缓坡开发能够为土地资源紧张地区产业发展提供重要的资源保障,而土地开发适宜性评价则是开展低丘缓坡综合开发利用的基础性工作,其核心在于综合评定低丘缓坡未利用地开发的适宜类型及其程度。以乌蒙山集中连片特殊困难片区为例,本研究在明确界定低丘缓坡范围的基础上,构建了低丘缓坡耕地、建设用地开发适宜性评价指标体系并基于GRNN模型划分土地开发适宜性等级;重点关注集中连片土地开发的规模化效益,采用邻域算法对研究区低丘缓坡综合开发适宜性进行评价。研究结果表明,乌蒙山片区低丘缓坡土地开发潜力巨大,耕地、建设用地开发单宜区面积分别为31.37 万hm2和3.84万hm2,其中多宜区面积达1.79 万hm2;而考虑同现有用地类型及土地开发类型的空间邻接关系,基于规模效益原则综合权衡,多宜区中0.84 万hm2更适宜开发为耕地,0.69 万hm2更适宜用于建设用地开发,0.26 万hm2因空间孤立而不作为土地开发区;综合开发适宜性评价确定耕地、建设用地开发区面积分别为27.68 万hm2和2.21 万hm2。研究结果对于乌蒙山片区低丘缓坡综合开发具有重要的实践指导意义。  相似文献

为研究城市及其周边区域大范围热环境变化,以秦岭山脉南坡和北坡为例,采用遥感数据反演地表温度、植被指数和地表通量,不仅从传统地表温度参数理解区域热环境问题,还着重分析了秦岭两侧地表通量空间分布格局.研究表明,秦岭山脉南坡与北坡气候、地形和地表覆被状况的差异导致地表温度和热通量等热环境均存在显著差异.北坡的西安和咸阳市平均地表温度比其他行政区显著偏高,而在南坡植被覆盖较好的周至县境内,地表温度平均值则显著下降;裸地和居民地的地表温度平均值较高,而潜热通量和蒸散发平均值则较低.遥感估算区域热通量和蒸散发信息与地表温度同样是区域热环境研究中不可忽视的重要表征变量之一,而大范围区域热环境变化对于研究城市热岛效应的形成机制具有重要推动作用.  相似文献

Brazil seeks to rapidly increase its agricultural production to meet future demands, especially for sugarcane, which is an agricultural commodity and a biofuel source. In this paper, we explore how to achieve this increase without compromising existing forestlands. We propose that it is possible to substantially expand sugarcane production in Brazil while avoiding further environmental losses and the indirect land use changes often associated with them, such as deforestation. This task could be accomplished by converting existing pasturelands with agricultural potential into cropland. A great deal of pastureland exists in Brazil. Thus, we addressed the following questions in this study: (1) where are the most suitable pasturelands for sugarcane located geographically and (2) what potential do these pasturelands have for sugarcane production regarding their physical suitability and other significant factors, such as infrastructure availability and socioeconomic factors. We conducted a land suitability analysis using a spatial location model based on multicriteria decision-making and geographic information systems (GIS) to identify the cultivated pasturelands most suitable for conversion to sugarcane production in Brazil. “What if” scenarios were built to determine how changes in the subjectively derived weights of the priority criteria would modify the spatial distribution of the suitability classes relative to the MCDA model and demonstrate the robustness of the crop suitability assessment. The most suitable pastureland areas for conversion to sugarcane production were predominantly located in Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Paraná, Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso and Pará. These zones have large contiguous areas of pasture with moderate and high agricultural potentials for sugarcane production. The total estimated area of cultivated pasturelands with moderate or high suitability for sugarcane production was 50 million hectares, which is much larger than the area currently used for sugarcane production in Brazil.  相似文献

Over the past few decades, demand for wheat in tropical and less developed countries has outweighed local production capacity. Increasing wheat production requires prior investigation of the crop's requirements. In places with relatively low technology a naturally favourable environment is paramount for optimum production. In a tropical country such as Nigeria, climate appears to be the most critical factor for wheat growth. A new technique (or model) of delineating the savanna region of Nigeria based on its agroclimatic potential for wheat production is proposed in this study. Analytical techniques of multiple regression, hierarchical clustering and suitability rating were employed in determining the crop production potentials. Five suitability zones were identified. The study shows that the Jos Plateau and the adjacent high plains of Kaduna and Zaria have the best climate for wheat production in Nigeria. It also observes that the climatic potential for wheat production generally decreases equatorwards due to the consistently high temperatures and humidity.  相似文献

Although Ethiopia has abundant land for irrigation, only a fraction of its potential land is being utilized. This study evaluates suitability of lands for irrigation using groundwater in Ethiopia using GIS-based Multi-Criteria Evaluation (MCE) techniques in order to enhance the country's agricultural industry. Key factors that significantly affect irrigation suitability evaluated in this study include physical land features (land use, soil, and slope), climate (rainfall and evapotranspiration), and market access (proximity to roads and access to market). These factors were weighted using a pair-wise comparison matrix, then reclassified and overlaid to identify suitable areas for groundwater irrigation using a 1-km grid. Groundwater data from the British Geological Survey were used to estimate the groundwater potential, which indicates the corresponding irrigation potential for major crops. Results indicated that more than 6 million ha of land are suitable for irrigation in Ethiopia. A large portion of the irrigable land is located in the Abbay, Rift Valley, Omo Ghibe, and Awash River basins. These basins have access to shallow groundwater (i.e., depth of groundwater less than 20 m from the surface) making it easier to extract. The comparison between available groundwater and total crop water requirements indicate that groundwater alone may not be sufficient to supply all suitable land. The study estimates that only 8% of the suitable land can be irrigated with the available shallow groundwater. However, groundwater is a viable option for supplementing surface water resources for irrigation in several basins in the country.  相似文献

目前,学术界对内地农区产业集群的研究还较为薄弱.基于对河南农区产业集群所做的实地调查,初步探讨了内地农区产业集群的形成原因、演变的阶段与机理,以及发展中存在的问题与对策.主要结论:内地农区产业集群形成的原因主要是具有企业家素质的个别农民利用偶然机遇开拓出商业机会,特定地区传统生产工艺与产业文化所决定的产业发展"路径依赖"效应,资源优势转化为产业发展的区位优势,人际关系带来的产业发展机遇,打工农民返乡创业所产生的扩散效应.其演化过程可分为手工作坊生产与原始积累,机械化生产与快速发展,内部分工与地方生产系统形成3个阶段.这个过程主要受4种机制的支配,即,创新与模仿的交互作用,促使产业集群不断实现规模扩张;低价格要素组合,低管理成本,形成了产业集群的低成本竞争优势;市场的成长引导产业集群的发展;产业集群的规模扩张成为推动其自身发展的一个重要的动力源泉.解决农区产业集群发展中的问题,在许多方面都有赖于地方政府的合理干预.  相似文献

One of the challenges of evaluating existing traditional farming systems is to combine local knowledge and modern scientific methods and terminology. This requires an evaluation of indigenous soil classification in modern terms. This paper focuses on an indigenous soil classification system developed by local farmers on the island of Bellona, Solomon Islands. The definitions of the different soil types are described and the principles of the classification system and the applicability of ethnopedology in soil surveys are discussed. Based on interviews with about 20 per cent of the farmers on the island as well as standard soil chemical and physical determinations on main soil types, an evaluation of the soil types for cultivation of various crops is carried out. The soils on Bellona are developed on oolitic or clayey phosphate-rich deposits forming the basis for the agriculture production on the island. The Bellonese soil classification system is mainly based on the physical properties of the humus-containing top layer. Subsoil layers are only used for classification if they are very close to the surface and may be mixed with the topsoil. Results show a general agreement among farmers, who perceive the same four out of seven soil types as highly useful for cultivation and rank these soil types similarly according to their suitability for different crops such as yam, watermelon, cassava and sweet potato. It is concluded that the indigenous soil classification is in line with the soil production potential and useful for land evaluation on Bellona.  相似文献

Cities are often substantially warmer than their surrounding rural areas. This ‘urban heat island effect’ can negatively affect the health of urban residents, increase energy usage, and alter ecological processes. While the effect of land use and land cover on urban heat islands has been extensively studied, little is known about the role of vegetation volume or built-area volume about this phenomenon. We ask whether the 3-dimensional structure of urban landscapes influences variations in temperature across a city. Using heights-above-ground information derived from LiDAR data and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) calculated from multispectral (4 band: Blue, Green, Red, and Near Infrared) aerial images, we estimated vegetation volume and built-area volume (non-vegetated) in Chicago, Illinois (USA). Daily minimum temperature data were obtained from 36 weather stations for summer 2011. The differences in urban air temperature across the study area were as large as 3 °C. Maximum likelihood models indicated that a combination of NDVI and vegetation volume best predicted nighttime temperature in Chicago, and that vegetation growing within 250–500 m of the weather station was most influential. Our results indicate that vegetation in “the matrix”, i.e. the area outside parks and preserves, is important in temperature mitigation since the majority of the vegetation volume in the study area occurs within residential, commercial/industrial, and institutional land uses. However, open space, which covers only 15% of the study area, has nearly as much total vegetation volume as residential land, which covers 61% of the study area. Clearly, both large wooded parks within a city and large trees scattered across residential areas are needed to best mitigate the urban heat island effect.  相似文献

乡村地区的旅游发展带来乡村社会空间的快速变迁与重构。对此,现有研究主要侧重空间生产过程的分析,而空间生产与权力关系之间的联系尚未充分理论化。论文以丹霞山青湖塘村为例,借助领域化理论,分析了多元主体的领域化行为所引发的乡村旅游社区社会空间变迁,总结了其中交织的权力—空间关系及社会空间变迁机制。结果发现:乡村旅游社区社会空间变迁是一个持续的领域化过程,是由“领域的社会组织”与“社会的领域组织”之间的交互作用所引致的,在这个过程中,无论是自上而下的管控权力还是自下而上的抵制权力,只有通过领域建构实现空间化才能实现真正的控制,权力关系正是在空间化中实现了生产与再生产。基于此,论文对旅游地社会空间变迁中的“权力—空间关系”进行了初步理论化,并讨论了领域化分析对于旅游社区产权制度实践、旅游地空间治理等问题所具有的启示意义。  相似文献
