We present kinematics and stellar population properties of 17 dwarf early-type galaxies in the luminosity range -14 ≥ M B ≥ -19. Our sample fills the gap between the intensively studied giant elliptical and Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxies. The dwarf ellipticals of the present sample have constant velocity dispersion profiles within their effective radii and do not show significant rotation, hence are clearly anisotropic. The dwarf lenticulars, instead, rotate faster and are, at least partially, supported by rotation. From optical Lick absorption indices, we derive metallicities and element abundances. Combining our sample with literature data of the Local Group dwarf spheroidals and giant ellipticals, we find a surprisingly tight linear correlation between metallicity and luminosity over a wide range: -8 ≥ M B ≥ -22. The α/Fe ratios of our dwarf ellipticals are significantly lower than the ones of giant elliptical galaxies, which is in agreement with spectroscopy of individual stars in Local Group dwarf spheroidals. Our results suggest the existence of a clear kinematic and stellar population dichotomy between dwarf and giant elliptical galaxies. This result is important for theories of galaxy formation, because it implies that present-day dwarf ellipticals are not the fossiled building blocks of giant ellipticals. The galaxy populations in present-day clusters are distinctly different from those of the field, indicating that environment plays a strong role in galaxy evolution. This review discusses some of the recent observations of moderate to high redshift clusters. A consistent picture of galaxy evolution in clusters appears to be emerging, which includes a population of galaxies which formed early in the cluster history, as well as field galaxies which have had their star formation truncated upon falling into the cluster potential. Galaxy interactions probably play an important role in exhausting star formation in some of these galaxies. However, there is significant variation in the populations of different cluster samples, with substantial evidence that some galaxies have their star formation terminated more gradually. This suggests that different mechanisms may dominate in different clusters, perhaps because of the recent merging history of the clusters. We also present a recent analysis of population gradients in clusters which suggests that the observed evolution in cluster populations is consistent with a scenario where changing infall rates drive the fraction of star forming galaxies in clusters, rather than a changing physical mechanism within the cluster. We analyze a sample of the Local Volume that contains 451 galaxies within 10 Mpc. We compare the various global parameters of these galaxies with their tidal index that characterizes the local density of the environment. The closest correlation is observed between the density of the galaxy’s environment and its morphological type. The abundance of neutral hydrogen in the members of close groups was found to be, on average, a factor of 3 lower than that in isolated galaxies. However, much of this difference is attributable to different morphological composition for the group members and field galaxies. The total mass-to-luminosity ratio is virtually independent of the tidal index of the galaxy, which indirectly indicates a low percentage of tidal systems among dwarf galaxies. All of the galaxies with three or more companions in the Local Volume are shown to have masses above the threshold value of 1010M.  相似文献

传统的哈勃星系形态分类法可以很好地对近邻的亮星系进行分类,但对低面亮度星系、矮椭球星系、矮旋涡星系以及高红移星系等都已无能为力。德沃古勒分类系统、叶凯士分类系统和范登伯分类系统是在哈勃分类法的基础上进行了发展和细化,利用光的中心聚集度或光度级等作为星系形态分类的参数。模型化分类系统试图定量地测量星系形态参数,但需要假定星系面亮度分布满足一定的形式,如r~(1/4)律、指数律等。最近几年,又有一些学者提出了非模型化分类系统,给出了若干个可以直接测量星系形态的结构参数,如:聚集度指数C、非对称指数A、簇聚指数S、基尼系数G及矩指数M_(20)。这些参数可以反映星系的形成历史、恒星形成、与其他星系的相互作用、已经发生或正在进行的并合活动等。它们不仅可以有效地给出近邻星系的分类特性,还能用于测量高红移星系的形态。该文介绍了不同的星系形态分类方法,比较了各类方法的优点和不足。在此基础上,最后介绍了基于非模型化分类系统的星系形态分类的研究进展。  相似文献

We performed simple numerical simulations to investigate the capture of dwarf galaxies by larger ones in the environment of a cluster of galaxies. The number of captures is small compared to the total number of dwarfs, but it is significant because these galaxies are the most abundant members of galaxy clusters. Our models show that, having a more massive central galaxy or a less massive background halo in the cluster, increases the number of captures. Damped Lyman-α systems observed in the spectra of high-redshift quasars are considered as the progenitors of present-day galaxies.Indeed, the large neutral hydrogen column densities observed and the presence of metals imply that the gas is somehow closely associated with regions of star formation. The nature of the absorbing object is unclear however.The discussion of whether high-redshift damped Lyman-α systems are produced throughlarge, fast-rotating, thick disks or through building-blocks of galaxies is important since it is related to how present-day galaxies form, either through initial formation of large disks and subsequent accretion of gas or as a result of merging of pregalactic clumps.We argue here that damped Lyman-α systems are progenitors of any kind of galaxy (dwarfs and large spirals); they trace peaks in the spatial density distribution of the gas. The fossil record of the Milky Way indicates an evolution including periodic accretions of smaller galaxies and clusters, consistent with hierarchical models of galaxy formation. I discuss three observational programs that demonstrate that the phase space distribution of stars, clusters and dwarf galaxies in the Galactic halo contains degrees of substructure left by the débris of tidally disrupted stellar systems. We re-examine the Fall & Efstathiou scenario for galaxy formation, including the dark halo gravitational reaction to the formation of the baryon disc, as well as continuous variations in the intrinsic halo density profile. The recently published rotation curves of low surface brightness (LSB) and dwarf galaxies together with previously known scaling relations provide sufficient information on the present-day structure of late-type disc galaxies to invert the problem. By requiring that the models reproduce all the observational restrictions we can fully constrain the initial conditions of galaxy formation, with a minimum of assumptions, in particular without the need to specify a cold dark matter (CDM) halo profile. This allows one to solve for all the initial conditions, in terms of the halo density profile, the baryon fraction and the total angular momentum. We find that a unique initial halo shape is sufficient to accurately reproduce the rotation curves of both LSB and normal late-type spiral galaxies. This unique halo profile differs substantially from that found in standard CDM models. A galactic baryon fraction of 0.065 is found. The initial value of the dimensionless angular momentum is seen to be the principal discriminator between the galaxy classes we examine. The present-day scalings between structural parameters are seen to originate in the initial conditions.  相似文献

The colour–magnitude relation (CMR) of cluster elliptical galaxies has been widely used to constrain their star formation histories (SFHs) and to discriminate between the monolithic collapse and merger paradigms of elliptical galaxy formation. We use a Λ cold dark matter hierarchical merger model of galaxy formation to investigate the existence and redshift evolution of the elliptical galaxy CMR in the merger paradigm. We show that the SFH of cluster ellipticals predicted by the model is quasi-monolithic , with only ∼10 per cent of the total stellar mass forming after   z ∼ 1  . The quasi-monolithic SFH results in a predicted CMR that agrees well with its observed counterpart in the redshift range  0 < z < 1.27  . We use our analysis to argue that the elliptical-only CMR can be used to constrain the SFHs of present-day cluster ellipticals only if we believe a priori in the monolithic collapse model. It is not a meaningful tool for constraining the SFH in the merger paradigm, since a progressively larger fraction of the progenitor set of present-day cluster ellipticals is contained in late-type star-forming systems at higher redshift, which cannot be ignored when deriving the SFHs. Hence, the elliptical-only CMR is not a useful discriminant between the two competing theories of elliptical galaxy evolution.  相似文献

Abell 85 is a cD galaxy cluster in the southern hemisphere and has a redshift of 0.055. Based on the spectra of 242 member galaxies provided by the Sloan spectral survey data, using the stellar population constituents and star formation history of these member galaxies obtained from the population synthesis software STARLIGHT, we study the regularities of the variations of star formation properties of galaxies (such as the ages, metal abundances and star formation rates of the characteristic stellar populations) with the local surface density of galaxies. As revealed by the results, the galaxies situated in the highdensity environments of the central region of the cluster possess higher population ages and metal abundances, and their rates of star formation are rather low, the recent activities of star formation are obviously suppressed. Besides, the correlations of the galaxy metal abundance and speci?c star formation rate with the stellar mass are asserted.  相似文献

We report first results from a series of N-body/gasdynamical simulations designed to study the origin of galaxy morphologies in a cold dark matter-dominated universe. The simulations include star formation and feedback and have numerical resolution sufficiently high to allow for a direct investigation of the morphology of simulated galaxies. We find, in agreement with previous theoretical work, that the presence of the main morphological components of galaxies—disks, spheroids, bars—is regulated by the mode of gas accretion and intimately linked to discrete accretion events. In the case we present, disks arise from the smooth deposition of cooled gas at the center of dark halos, spheroids result from the stirring of preexisting disks during mergers, and bars are triggered by tides generated by satellites. This demonstrates that morphology is a transient phenomenon within the lifetime of a galaxy and that the Hubble sequence reflects the varied accretion histories of galaxies in hierarchical formation scenarios. In particular, we demonstrate directly that disk/bulge systems can be built and rebuilt by the smooth accretion of gas onto the remnant of a major merger and that the present-day remnants of late dissipative mergers between disks are spheroidal stellar systems with structure resembling that of field ellipticals. The perplexing variety of galaxy morphologies is thus highly suggestive of—and may actually even demand—a universe where structures have evolved hierarchically.  相似文献

We use an automatic algorithm to fit two-dimensional bulge and disk surface brightness profiles to a sample of 200 Sloan Digital Sky Survey Early Data Release (SDSS EDR) galaxies of known redshift and brighter than r=16. The bulge-to-disk (B/D) luminosity ratios can be combined with an estimate of the galaxy's local environment to address a number of key issues that are central to our understanding of galaxy formation:– How do B/D ratios depend upon galaxy luminosity?– What are the disk and spheroid luminosity functions for field galaxies?– How does the total luminosity in bulges and disks depend on environment?  相似文献

Gravitational wave emission by coalescing black holes (BHs) kicks the remnant BH with a typical velocity of hundreds of  km s−1  . This velocity is sufficiently large to remove the remnant BH from a low-mass galaxy but is below the escape velocity from the Milky Way (MW) galaxy. If central BHs were common in the galactic building blocks that merged to make the MW, then numerous BHs that were kicked out of low-mass galaxies should be freely floating in the MW halo today. We use a large statistical sample of possible merger tree histories for the MW to estimate the expected number of recoiled BH remnants present in the MW halo today. We find that hundreds of BHs should remain bound to the MW halo after leaving their parent low-mass galaxies. Each BH carries a compact cluster of old stars that populated the core of its original host galaxy. Using the time-dependent Fokker–Planck equation, we find that the present-day clusters are  ≲1 pc  in size, and their central bright regions should be unresolved in most existing sky surveys. These compact systems are distinguishable from globular clusters by their internal (Keplerian) velocity dispersion greater than 100 km s−1 and their high mass-to-light ratio owing to the central BH. An observational discovery of this relic population of star clusters in the MW halo would constrain the formation history of the MW and the dynamics of BH mergers in the early Universe. A similar population should exist around other galaxies and may potentially be detectable in M31 and M33.  相似文献

在“等级式成团”(hierarchical clustering)宇宙学演化框架下,早型星系(E/SO)的形成和演化不是如经典的“整体塌缩”(monolithic collapse)演化模式所描述的是由高红移处的短时间剧烈恒星形成过程一次性完成的;相反,它们可能是在大尺度结构形成过程中由盘星系间的相互合并演化而来,特别是对于质量相当的盘星系间的剧烈合并过程。目前的数值模拟和高分辨成像观测都已证实了这种可能性,而且红移巡天的结果也更多地支持这种演化模式。在此提出一个星系合并过程中核区星暴和中心黑洞共生演化的模型,来解释由空间望远镜(HST)和地面CCD高分辨测光所得的早型星系“黑洞/核球”统计线性相关,也即中心黑洞质量约为其核球体质量的0.6%;同时,该演化模型还可以进一步合理地解释在类星体的近红外成像观测中统计得出的相似的线性相关性,即类星体中心亮度与其母星系质量成正比。并给出此模型计算的极限情况和模型的解析估计。  相似文献
