We have shown that a current-carrying plasma loop can be heated by magnetic pinch driven by the pressure imbalance between inside and outside the loop, using a 3-dimensional electromagnetic (EM) particle code. Both electrons and ions in the loop can be heated in the direction perpendicular to the ambient magnetic field, therefore the perpendicular temperature can be increased about 10 times compared with the parallel temperature. This temperature anisotropy produced by the magnetic pinch heating can induce a plasma instability, by which high-frequency electromagnetic waves can be excited. The plasma current which is enhanced by the magnetic pinch can also excite a kinetic kink instability, which can heat ions perpendicular to the magnetic field. The heating mechanism of ions as well as the electromagnetic emission could be important for an understanding of the coronal loop heating and the electromagnetic wave emissions from active coronal regions.

We study a nonlinear mechanism for the excitation of kinetic Alfvén waves (KAWs) by fast magneto-acoustic waves (FWs) in the solar atmosphere. Our focus is on the excitation of KAWs that have very small wavelengths in the direction perpendicular to the background magnetic field. Because of their small perpendicular length scales, these waves are very efficient in the energy exchange with plasmas and other waves. We show that the nonlinear coupling of the energy of the finite-amplitude FWs to the small-scale KAWs can be much faster than other dissipation mechanisms for fast wave, such as electron viscous damping, Landau damping, and modulational instability. The nonlinear damping of the FWs due to decay FW = KAW + KAW places a limit on the amplitude of the magnetic field in the fast waves in the solar corona and solar-wind at the level B/B 0∼10−2. In turn, the nonlinearly excited small-scale KAWs undergo strong dissipation due to resistive or Landau damping and can provide coronal and solar-wind heating. The transient coronal heating observed by Yohkoh and SOHO may be produced by the kinetic Alfvén waves that are excited by parametric decay of fast waves propagating from the reconnection sites.

We present a numerical simulation of the fast magnetosonic shock wave formation during a two-current-loop collision by using a magnetohydrodynamical model. It is shown that the rarefaction waves are generated in the initial stage when the two current loops start to collide. After the rarefaction waves propagate away from the excited region, the fast magnetosonic waves with density enhancement can be produced for the simulation when the current strength of the loop is weak. As the current becomes strong enough, the magnetosonic shock waves can be generated in the direction perpendicular to that of the two-loop collision.

Impulsively generated magnetohydrodynamic waves in solar coronal loops, with arbitrary plasma , are studied numerically by a flux-corrected transport algorithm. Numerical results show that the total reflection which occurs in the region of low Alfvén speed leads to trapped fast kink magnetosonic waves. These waves propagate along the slab and exhibit periodic, quasi-periodic, and decay phases. As a consequence of the difference in wave propagation speeds, the time signatures of the slow magnetosonic waves are delayed in time in comparison to the time signatures of the fast magnetosonic and Alfvén waves. An interaction between the waves can generate a longer lasting and complex quasi-periodic phase of the fast wave. We discuss also the observational detectability of such MHD waves in optical, radio, and soft X-ray wavelenghts.

A mechanism of the Earth's magnetospheric substorm is proposed. It is suggested that the MHD waves may propagate across the magnetopause from the magnetosheath into the magnetotail and will be dissipated in the plasma sheet, heating the plasma and accelerating the particles. When the solar wind parameters change, the Poynting flux of the waves transferred from the magnetosheath into the tail, may be greater than 1018 erg s?1. The heated plasma and accelerated particles in the plasma sheet will be injected into the inner magnetosphere, and this may explain the process of the ring current formation and auroral substorm. The Alfvén wave can only propagate along the magnetic force line into the magnetosphere in the open magnetosphere, but the magnetosonic wave can propagate in both the open and closed magnetosphere. When the IMF turns southward, the configuration of the magnetosphere will change from a nearly closed model into some kind of open one. The energy flux of Alfvén waves is generally larger than that of the magnetosonic wave. This implies that it is easy to produce substorms when the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) has a large southward component, but the substorm can also be produced even if the IMF is directed northward.

Transverse amplitude modulations of fast magnetosonic waves propagating perpendicular to the background magnetic field are shown to be unstable on a time scale τ ~- λ/V aφ, if the wave amplitude φ exceeds a critical value, φ c = C s/V a. The slow modes generated by the modulational instability under gravity can propagate along the magnetic field with the characteristic velocity, V ph = g/2k V aφ. The applications of this modulational instability and slow-mode generation mechanism to a solar plasma are discussed.

We have modeled the solar coronal active loop heating by discrete Alfvén waves. Discrete Alfvén waves (DAW) are a new class of Alfvén waves which can be described by the two-fluid model with finite ion-cyclotron frequency, or the MHD model with plasma current along the magnetic field line as shown by Appert, Vaclavik, and Villar (1984). We have modeled the coronal loop as a semi-toroidal plasma with the major toroidal radius much larger than the plasma radius. We have shown that the absorption of discrete Alfvén waves by the plasma through viscosity can account for at least 30% of the coronal heating rate density of 10–4 J m–3 s–1.

Several quasi-periodic, milliseconds fine structures in the metric wave band occurring during the evolution of solar type IV bursts have been observed by Yunnan Radio Telescope, Trieste Radio Telescope and IZMIRAN dynamic spectrometer. The envelope of these quasi-period modulational fine structures have a soliton pattern, so it is called an envelope soliton-like fine structure. A modulational instability model of electromagnetic wave has been adopted here. It is found that the longitudinal modulational instability can occur only in the solar coronal region of low magnetic field and high temperature, as well as high density plasma, which will give rise to the envelope soliton-like fine structures in the solar metric and decimetric radio emission. The propagation effects of envelope soliton-like fine structure from corona to the observer on the Earth have been briefly considered. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

The nonlinear excitation of fast magnetosonic waves by phase mixing Alfvén waves in a cold plasma with a smooth inhomogeneity of density across a uniform magnetic field is considered. If initially fast waves are absent from the system, then nonlinearity leads to their excitation by transversal gradients in the Alfvén wave. The efficiency of the nonlinear Alfvén–fast magnetosonic wave coupling is strongly increased by the inhomogeneity of the medium. The fast waves, permanently generated by Alfvén wave phase mixing, are refracted from the region with transversal gradients of the Alfvén speed. This nonlinear process suggests a mechanism of indirect plasma heating by phase mixing through the excitation of obliquely propagating fast waves.

The nature of coronal wave fronts is intensely debated. They are observed in several wavelength bands and are frequently interpreted as magnetosonic waves propagating in the lower solar atmosphere. However, they can also be attributed to the line-of-sight projection of the edges of coronal mass ejections. Therefore, estimating the altitude of these features is crucial for deciding in favor of one of these two interpretations. We took advantage of a set of observations obtained from two different view directions by the EUVI instrument onboard the STEREO mission on 7 December 2007 to derive the time evolution of the altitude of a coronal wave front. We developed a new technique to compute the altitude of the coronal wave and found that the altitude increased during the initial 5 min and then slightly decreased back to the low corona. We interpret the evolution of the altitude as follows: the increase in the altitude of the wave front is linked to the rise of a bubble-like structure depending on whether it is a magnetosonic wave front or a CME in the initial phase. During the second phase, the observed brightness of the wave front was mixed with the brightening of the underlying magnetic structures as the emission from the wave front faded because the plasma became diluted with altitude.

In high-speed solar wind, propagating Alfvén waves can be transferred into fast magnetosonic waves. When both the magnetic field strength and Alfvén wave velocity approach zero, fast magnetosonic waves will be transferred into ion-acoustic waves. As the phase velocity of ion-acoustic waves is slightly greater than the thermal velocity of protons, the turbulence energy of ion-acoustic waves can largely be absorbed by protons and can cause the mean temperature of protons to be greater than that of electrons by stochastic turbulence heating of ion-acoustic waves for protons.

A model of ‘disparitions brusques’ (sudden disappearence of eruptive prominences) is discussed based on the Kippenhahn ans Schlüter configuration. It is shown that Kippenhahn and Schlüter's current sheet is very weakly unstable against magnetic reconnecting modes during the lifetime of quiescent prominences. Disturbances in the form of fast magnetosonic waves originating from nearby active regions or the changes of whole magnetic configuration due to newly emerged magnetic flux may trigger a rapid growing instability associated with magnetic field reconnection. This instability gives rise to disruptions of quiescent prominences and also generates high energy particles.

In this article, we investigate the possibility of transient growth in the linear perturbation of current sheets. The resistive magnetohydrodynamics operator for a background field consisting of a current sheet is non-normal, meaning that associated eigenvalues and eigenmodes can be very sensitive to perturbation. In a linear stability analysis of a tearing current sheet, we show that modes that are damped as \(t\rightarrow \infty \) can produce transient energy growth, contributing faster growth rates and higher energy attainment (within a fixed finite time) than the unstable tearing mode found from normal-mode analysis. We determine the transient growth for tearing-stable and tearing-unstable regimes and discuss the consequences of our results for processes in the solar atmosphere, such as flares and coronal heating. Our results have significant potential impact on how fast current sheets can be disrupted. In particular, transient energy growth due to (asymptotically) damped modes may lead to accelerated current sheet thinning and, hence, a faster onset of the plasmoid instability, compared to the rate determined by the tearing mode alone.

The magnetosonic modes of magnetic plasma structures in the solar atmosphere are considered taking into account steady flows of plasma in the internal and external media and using a slab geometry. The investigation brings nearer the theory of magnetosonic waveguides, in such structures as coronal loops and photospheric flux tubes, to realistic conditions of the solar atmosphere. The general dispersion relation for the magnetosonic modes of a magnetic slab in magnetic surroundings is derived, allowing for field-aligned steady flows in either region. It is shown that flows change both qualitatively and quantitatively the characteristics of magnetosonic modes. The flow may lead to the appearance of a new type of trapped mode, namelybackward waves. These waves are the usual slab modes propagating in the direction opposite to the internal flow, but advected with the flow. The disappearance of some modes due to the flow is also demonstrated. The results are applied to coronal and photospheric magnetic structures. In coronal loops, the appearance of backward slow body waves or the disappearance of slow body waves, depending upon the direction of propagation, is possible if the flow speed exceeds the internal sound speed ( 300 km s–1). In photospheric tubes, the disappearance of fast surface and slow body waves may be caused by an external downdraught of about 3 km s–1.

We consider a model of a coronal loop in the form of a cord surrounded by a coaxial shell. Two slow magnetosonic waves longitudinally propagate within a thin flux tube on the m=0 cylindrical mode with velocities close to the tube velocities in the cord and the shell. One wave propagates inside the cord, while the other propagates inside the shell. A peculiar feature of the second wave is that the plasma in the cord and the shell oscillates with opposite phases. There are two fast magnetosonic waves on each of the cylindrical modes with m>0. If the plasma density in the shell is lower than that in the surrounding corona, then one of the waves is radiated into the corona, which causes the loop oscillations to be damped, while the other wave is trapped by the cord, but can also be radiated out under certain conditions. If the plasma density in the shell is higher than that in the cord, then one of the waves is trapped by the shell, while the other wave can also be trapped by the shell under certain conditions. In the wave trapped by the shell and the wave radiated by the tube, the plasma in the cord and the shell oscillates with opposite phases.

We have studied the modulational stability of a finite-amplitude fast sausage magnetosonic surface wave traveling along a thin magnetic slab in the solar photosphere (chromosphere). The equation governing the evolution of the fast-wave envelope modulated by a slow wave driven by the ponderomotive force proves to be the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation which in photospheric conditions admits only dark envelope soliton solutions. The possibility of the existence of such solitary waves in the solar atmosphere is discussed.

The MHD instabilities of a temperature-anisotropic coronal plasma are considered. We show that aperiodic mirror instabilities of slow MHD waves can develop under solar coronal conditions for weak magnetic fields (B < 1 G) and periodic ion-acoustic instabilities can develop for strong magnetic fields (B > 10 G). We have found the instability growth rates and estimated the temporal and spatial scales of development and decay of the periodic instability. We show that the instabilities under consideration can play a prominent role in the energy balance of the corona and may be considered as a large-scale energy source of the wave coronal heating mechanism.

The fast heating of coronal loops at the very beginning of solar flares is discussed as a first observable signature of downstreaming 0.1–1 MeV proton beams. We place emphasis on the produced by proton beams large-scale upward electric field, supporting beam-driven instability of the kinetic Alfvén waves (KAW). The considerable part of a beam kinetic energy may be converted into heat via intermediate KAW with heated region initially spreading from the top downward to footpoints of the loop-like coronal structures with velocity of about a few thousands km/s.
