We have examined the spatial distribution of 856 AGN detected by the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS) using a direct search for structures with the minimal spanning tree. The AGNs were compiled from an area of ∼7000 deg2, in which optical identifications of RASS sources were made with the help of the digitized objective prism plates of the Hamburg Quasar Survey (HQS). Redshifts were taken from the literature or from own follow-up observations. The sample probes the spatial distribution at low redshifts, because the redshift distribution peaks at z ∼0.1. The application of the minimal spanning tree led to a 1.8 σ discovery of an AGN group with seven members in a volume V ∼140×75×75  h −3 Mpc3 in the Pisces constellation. With a mean redshift z =0.27 this group is only the third discovered group at redshifts z <0.5. The RASS offers excellent possibilities to study large-scale structure with AGNs at low redshifts, once these redshifts are determined.  相似文献

We investigate the clustering of galaxies selected in the 3.6 μm band of the Spitzer Wide-area Infrared Extragalactic (SWIRE) legacy survey. The angular two-point correlation function is calculated for 11 samples with flux limits of S 3.6≥ 4–400 μJy, over an 8 deg2 field. The angular clustering strength is measured at >5σ significance at all flux limits, with amplitudes of A = (0.49–29) × 10−3 at 1°, for a power-law model, A θ−0.8. We estimate the redshift distributions of the samples using phenomological models, simulations and photometric redshifts, and so derive the spatial correlation lengths. We compare our results with the Galaxies In Cosmological Simulations (GalICS) models of galaxy evolution and with parametrized models of clustering evolution. The GalICS simulations are consistent with our angular correlation functions, but fail to match the spatial clustering inferred from the phenomological models or the photometric redshifts. We find that the uncertainties in the redshift distributions of our samples dominate the statistical errors in our estimates of the spatial clustering. At low redshifts (median z ≤ 0.5), the comoving correlation length is approximately constant,   r 0= 6.1 ± 0.5  h −1  Mpc, and then decreases with increasing redshift to a value of 2.9 ± 0.3  h −1 Mpc for the faintest sample, for which the median redshift is z ∼ 1. We suggest that this trend can be attributed to a decrease in the average galaxy and halo mass in the fainter flux-limited samples, corresponding to changes in the relative numbers of early- and late-type galaxies. However, we cannot rule out strong evolution of the correlation length over  0.5 < z < 1  .  相似文献

The alignment of clusters of galaxies with their nearest neighbours and between clusters within a supercluster is investigated using simulations of 5123 dark matter particles for ΛCDM and τ CDM cosmological models. Strongly significant alignments are found for separations of up to 15  h −1 Mpc in both cosmologies, but for the ΛCDM model the alignments extend up to separations of 30  h −1 Mpc. The effect is strongest for nearest neighbours, but is not significant enough to be useful as an observational discriminant between cosmologies. As a check of whether this difference in alignments is present in other cosmologies, smaller simulations with 2563 particles are investigated for four different cosmological models. Because of poor number statistics, only the standard CDM model shows indications of having different alignments from the other models.  相似文献

The precision of intensity measurements of the extragalactic X-ray background (XRB) on an angular scale of about a degree is dominated by spatial fluctuations caused by source confusion noise. X-ray source counts at the flux level responsible for these fluctuations, ∼10−12 erg cm−2 s−1, will soon be accurately measured by new missions, and it will then be possible to detect the weaker fluctuations caused by the clustering of the fainter, more distant sources which produce the bulk of the XRB. We show here that measurements of these excess fluctuations at the level of (Δ I/I )∼2×10−3 are within reach, improving by an order of magnitude on present upper limits. Since it is likely that most (if not all) of the XRB will be resolved into sources by AXAF , subsequent optical identification of these sources will reveal the X-ray volume emissivity in the Universe as a function of redshift. With these ingredients, all-sky observations of the XRB can be used to measure the power spectrum (PS) of the density fluctuations in the Universe at comoving wavevectors k c∼0.01–0.1 Mpc−1 at redshifts where most of the XRB is likely to originate ( z ∼1–2) with a sensitivity similar to, or better than, the predictions from large-scale structure theories. A relatively simple X-ray experiment, carried out by a large-area proportional counter with a 0.5–2 deg2 collimated field of view scanning the whole sky a few times, would be able to determine the PS of the density fluctuations near its expected peak in wavevector with an accuracy better than 10 per cent.  相似文献

We consider the distortion in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) resulting from galactic winds at high redshift. Winds outflowing from galaxies have been hypothesized to be possible sources of metals in the intergalactic medium, which is known to have been enriched to 10−2.5 Z at z ∼3. We model these winds as functions of mass of the parent galaxy and redshift, assuming that they activate at a common initial redshift, z in, and calculate the mean y -distortion and the angular power spectrum of the distortion in the CMB. We find that the thermal Sunyaev–Zel'dovich (SZ) effect resulting from the winds is consistent with previous estimates. The distortion arising from the kinetic SZ (kSZ) effect is, however, found to be more important than the thermal SZ (tSZ) effect. We find that the distortion resulting from galactic winds is an important contribution to the power spectrum of distortion at very small angular scales ( l ∼104). We also find that the power spectrum resulting from clustering dominates the Poisson power spectrum for l ≤(4–5)×105. We show explicitly how the combined power spectrum from wind dominates over that of clusters at 217 GHz, relevant for PLANCK . We also show how these constraints change when the efficiency of the winds is varied.  相似文献

We attempt to put constraints on different cosmological and biasing models by combining the recent clustering results of X-ray sources in the local ( z ≤0.1) and distant Universe ( z ∼1) . To this end we compare the measured angular correlation function for bright (Akylas et al.) and faint (Vikhlinin & Forman) ROSAT X-ray sources respectively with those expected in three spatially flat cosmological models. Taking into account the different functional forms of the bias evolution, we find that there are two cosmological models which match the data well. In particular, low-Ω cosmological models (ΩΛ=1−Ω=0.7) that contain either (i) high σ 8mass=1.13 value with galaxy merging bias, b ( z )∝(1+ z )1.8 or (ii) low σ 8mass=0.9 with non-bias, b ( z ) ≡ 1 best reproduce the AGN clustering results, while τ CDM models with different bias behaviour are ruled out at a high significance level.  相似文献

We report on the search for distant radio-loud quasars in the Cosmic Lens All Sky Survey (CLASS) of flat spectrum radio sources with S 5GHz>30 mJy . Unresolved optical counterparts were selected from APM scans of POSS-I plates, with e <19.0 and red o − e >2.0 colours, in an effective area of ∼6400 deg2. Four sources were found to be quasars with z >4 , of which one was previously known. This sample bridges the gap between the strong radio surveys with S 5GHz>200 mJy and the samples of radio-weak quasars that can be generated via radio observations of optically selected quasars. In addition, four new quasars at z >3 have been found. The selection criteria result in a success-rate of ∼1:7 for radio-loud quasars at z >4 , which is a significant improvement over previous studies. This search yields a surface density of 1 per 1600 deg2, which is about a factor of ∼15 lower than that found in a similar search for radio-quiet quasars at z >4 . The study presented here is strongly biased against quasars beyond z >4.5 , since the e -passband of the POSS-I only samples the spectra shortward of 1200 Å at these redshifts.  相似文献

We explore the implications of a possible cosmic-ray (CR) background generated during the first supernova explosions that end the brief lives of massive Population III stars. We show that such a CR background could have significantly influenced the cooling and collapse of primordial gas clouds in minihaloes around redshifts of   z ∼ 15–20  , provided the CR flux was sufficient to yield an ionization rate greater than about 10−19 s−1 near the centre of the minihalo. The presence of CRs with energies  ≲107  eV would indirectly enhance the molecular cooling in these regions, and we estimate that the resulting lower temperatures in these minihaloes would yield a characteristic stellar mass as low as  ∼10 M  . CRs have a less-pronounced effect on the cooling and collapse of primordial gas clouds inside more massive dark matter haloes with virial masses  ≳108 M  at the later stages of cosmological structure formation around   z ∼ 10–15  . In these clouds, even without CR flux the molecular abundance is already sufficient to allow cooling to the floor set by the temperature of the cosmic microwave background.  相似文献

We present the results of a continuing survey to detect Lyα emitting galaxies at redshifts   z ∼ 9  : the ' z equals nine' (ZEN) survey. We have obtained deep VLT Infrared Spectrometer and Array Camera observations in the narrow J -band filter NB119 directed towards three massive lensing clusters: Abell clusters 1689, 1835 and 114. The foreground clusters provide a magnified view of the distant Universe and permit a sensitive test for the presence of very high redshift galaxies. We search for   z ∼ 9 Lyα  emitting galaxies displaying a significant narrow-band excess relative to accompanying J -band observations that remain undetected in Hubble Space Telescope ( HST )/Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) optical images of each field. No sources consistent with this criterion are detected above the unlensed 90 per cent point-source flux limit of the narrow-band image,   F NB= 3.7 × 10−18 erg s−1 cm−2  . To date, the total coverage of the ZEN survey has sampled a volume at   z ∼ 9  of approximately 1700 comoving Mpc3 to a Lyα emission luminosity of  1043 erg s−1  . We conclude by considering the prospects for detecting   z ∼ 9 Lyα  emitting galaxies in light of both observed galaxy properties at   z < 7  and simulated populations at   z > 7  .  相似文献

We present a sample of eight extended X-ray sources detected in the wide-field (∼2.3 deg2), bright (2–10 ks) XMM–Newton /2dF survey, reaching a flux limit of  ∼2 × 10−14 erg s−1 cm−2  . Of these, seven are identified as secure X-ray clusters in the soft 0.3–2 keV band using a standard wavelet algorithm on either the PN or the MOS images. Spectroscopic or photometric redshifts are available for five clusters, spanning a range between 0.12 and 0.68. The X-ray spectral fittings show temperatures between 1 and 4.6 keV, characteristic of poor clusters and groups of galaxies. We derive for the first time the XMM–Newton cluster number count  log  N –log  S   distribution albeit with poor statistics. Both the  log  N –log  S   and the luminosity–temperature relation are in good agreement with previous ROSAT results.  相似文献

We use a compilation of cosmic microwave anisotropy data to constrain the epoch of reionization in the Universe, as a function of cosmological parameters. We consider spatially flat cosmologies, varying the matter density Ω0 (the flatness being restored by a cosmological constant), the Hubble parameter h and the spectral index n of the primordial power spectrum. Our results are quoted both in terms of the maximum permitted optical depth to the last-scattering surface, and in terms of the highest allowed reionization redshift assuming instantaneous reionization. For critical-density models, significantly tilted power spectra are excluded as they cannot fit the current data for any amount of reionization, and even scale-invariant models must have an optical depth to last scattering of below 0.3. For the currently favoured low-density model with Ω0=0.3 and a cosmological constant, the earliest reionization permitted to occur is at around redshift 35, which roughly coincides with the highest estimate in the literature. We provide general fitting functions for the maximum permitted optical depth, as a function of cosmological parameters. We do not consider the inclusion of tensor perturbations, but if present they would strengthen the upper limits that we quote.  相似文献

We present basic observational strategies for ASTRO-F [also known as the Infra-Red Imaging Surveyor (IRIS) ] to be launched in 2004 by the Japanese Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS). We examine two survey scenarios, a deep ∼1 deg2 survey reaching sensitivities an order of magnitude below all but the deepest surveys performed by ISO in the mid-IR, and a shallow ∼18  deg2 mid-IR (7–25μm in six bands) covering an area greater than the entire area covered by all ISO mid-IR surveys. Using two cosmological models, the number of galaxies predicted for each survey is calculated. The first model uses an enhancement of a classical (1+ z )3.1 pure luminosity evolution model by Pearson & Rowan-Robinson. The second model incorporates a strongly evolving ultraluminous infrared galaxy component. For the deep survey, between 20 000 and 30 000 galaxies should be detected in the shortest wavebands, and ≈5000 in the longest (25-μm) band. It is predicted that the shallow survey will detect of the order of 100 000–150 000 sources. We find that for both ASTRO-F and other small-aperture space telescopes, confusion due to faint sources may be severe, especially at the longest mid-IR wavelengths. Using the exceptional range of observational options provided by ASTRO-F (nine wavelength filters and spectroscopic ability from 2.2 to 25 μm), we show that by combining the mid-IR observations with the near-IR camera on ASTRO-F , both the different galaxy populations and rough photometric redshifts can be distinguished in the colour–colour plane. In its role as a surveyor (plus near-IR spectroscopic ability) ASTRO-F will complement well the SIRTF space observatory mission.  相似文献

We calculate the expected mid-infrared (MIR) molecular hydrogen line emission from the first objects in the Universe. As a result of their low masses, the stellar feedback from massive stars is able to blow away their gas content and collect it into a cooling shell where H2 rapidly forms and IR roto-vibrational (as for example the rest-frame 2.12 μm) lines carry away a large fraction (up to 10 per cent) of the explosion energy. The fluxes from these sources are in the range 10−21–10−17 erg s−1 cm−2 . The highest number counts are expected in the 20-μm band, where about 105 sources deg−2 are predicted at the limiting flux of 3×10−18 erg s−1 cm−2. Among the planned observational facilities, we find that the best detection perspectives are offered by the Next Generation Space Telescope ( NGST ), which should be able to reveal about 200 first objects in one hour observation time at its limiting flux in the above band. Therefore, mid-IR instruments appear to represent perfect tools to trace star formation and stellar feedback in the high ( z ≳5) redshift Universe.  相似文献

A Population III/Population II transition from massive to normal stars is predicted to occur when the metallicity of the star-forming gas crosses the critical range   Z cr= 10−5±1 Z  . To investigate the cosmic implications of such a process, we use numerical simulations which follow the evolution, metal enrichment and energy deposition of both Population II and Population III stars. We find that: (i) due to inefficient heavy element transport by outflows and slow 'genetic' transmission during hierarchical growth, large fluctuations around the average metallicity arise; as a result, Population III star formation continues down to   z = 2.5  , but at a low peak rate of  10−5 M yr−1 Mpc−3  occurring at   z ≈ 6  (about 10−4 of the Population II one); and (ii) Population III star formation proceeds in an 'inside–out' mode in which formation sites are progressively confined to the periphery of collapsed structures, where the low gas density and correspondingly long free-fall time-scales result in a very inefficient astration. These conclusions strongly encourage deep searches for pristine star formation sites at moderate  (2 < z < 5)  redshifts where metal-free stars are likely to be hidden.  相似文献

We have compiled a sample of ∼ 9600 bright, i ≤18.95 , red, b J− r >2 , candidate galaxies in an area of 220 deg2. These are luminous, L > L * , field early-type galaxies with redshifts 0.3≲ z ≲0.6 . We present a redshift catalogue of a subsample of 581 targets. The galaxies were selected according to their broad-band b J ri colours from United Kingdom Schmidt Telescope plates, and have a surface density on the sky of only ∼ 50 deg−2. Such luminous field galaxies are virtually absent from published redshift surveys and the catalogue provides a large sample of the most luminous normal galaxies, at cosmological distances. The statistical properties of the galaxy spectra, including absorption-line and emission-line measures, are presented and a composite spectrum constructed. The nature of the sample, combined with the relatively bright apparent magnitudes, makes the galaxies suitable targets for several key investigations in galaxy evolution and cosmology.  相似文献

We investigate the clustering properties of galaxies in the recently completed ELAIS-S1 redshift survey through their spatial two-point autocorrelation function. We used a subsample of the ELAIS-S1 catalogue covering approximately 4 deg2 and consisting of 148 objects selected at 15 μm with a flux >0.5 mJy and a redshift   z < 0.5  . We detected a positive signal in the correlation function that in the range of separations  1–10  h −1 Mpc  is well approximated by a power law with a slope  γ= 1.4 ± 0.25  and a correlation length   s 0= 5.4 ± 1.2  h −1 Mpc  , at the 90 per cent significance level. This result is in good agreement with the redshift-space correlation function measured in more local samples of mid-infrared-selected galaxies such as the IRAS Point Source Catalog (PSC z ) redshift survey. This suggests a lack of significant clustering evolution of infrared-selected objects out to   z = 0.5  that is further confirmed by the consistency found between the correlation functions measured in a local  ( z < 0.2)  and a distant  (0.2 < z < 0.5)  subsample of ELAIS-S1 galaxies. We also confirm that optically selected galaxies in the local redshift surveys, especially those of the SDSS sample, are significantly more clustered than infrared objects.  相似文献

We use cosmological Λ cold dark matter (CDM) numerical simulations to model the evolution of the substructure population in 16 dark matter haloes with resolutions of up to seven million particles within the virial radius. The combined substructure circular velocity distribution function (VDF) for hosts of 1011 to  1014 M  at redshifts from zero to two or higher has a self-similar shape, is independent of host halo mass and redshift, and follows the relation  d n /d v = (1/8)( v cmax/ v cmax,host)−4  . Halo to halo variance in the VDF is a factor of roughly 2 to 4. At high redshifts, we find preliminary evidence for fewer large substructure haloes (subhaloes). Specific angular momenta are significantly lower for subhaloes nearer the host halo centre where tidal stripping is more effective. The radial distribution of subhaloes is marginally consistent with the mass profile for   r ≳ 0.3 r vir  , where the possibility of artificial numerical disruption of subhaloes can be most reliably excluded by our convergence study, although a subhalo distribution that is shallower than the mass profile is favoured. Subhalo masses but not circular velocities decrease towards the host centre. Subhalo velocity dispersions hint at a positive velocity bias at small radii. There is a weak bias towards more circular orbits at lower redshift, especially at small radii. We additionally model a cluster in several power-law cosmologies of   P ∝ kn   , and demonstrate that a steeper spectral index, n , results in significantly less substructure.  相似文献

We use the Millennium Simulation (MS) to measure the cross-correlation between halo centres and mass (or equivalently the average density profiles of dark haloes) in a Lambda cold dark matter (ΛCDM) cosmology. We present results for radii in the range  10  h −1 kpc < r < 30  h −1 Mpc  and for halo masses in the range  4 × 1010 < M 200 < 4 × 1014  h −1 M  . Both at   z = 0  and at   z = 0.76  these cross-correlations are surprisingly well fitted if the inner region is approximated by a density profile of NFW or Einasto form, the outer region by a biased version of the linear mass autocorrelation function, and the maximum of the two is adopted where they are comparable. We use a simulation of galaxy formation within the MS to explore how these results are reflected in cross-correlations between galaxies and mass. These are directly observable through galaxy–galaxy lensing. Here also we find that simple models can represent the simulation results remarkably well, typically to ≲10 per cent. Such models can be used to extend our results to other redshifts, to cosmologies with other parameters, and to other assumptions about how galaxies populate dark haloes. Our galaxy formation simulation already reproduces current galaxy–galaxy lensing data quite well. The characteristic features predicted in the galaxy–galaxy lensing signal should provide a strong test of the ΛCDM cosmology as well as a route to understanding how galaxies form within it.  相似文献

We analyse a high-redshift sample (0.4 < z < 0.5) of luminous red galaxies (LRGs) extracted from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data release 4 and their surrounding structures to explore the presence of alignment effects of these bright galaxies with neighbour objects. In order to avoid projection effects, we compute photometric redshifts for galaxies within 3  h −1 Mpc in projection of LRGs and calculate the relative angle between the LRG major axis and the direction to neighbours within 1000 km s−1. We find a clear signal of alignment between LRG orientations and the distribution of galaxies within 1.5  h −1 Mpc. The alignment effects are present only for the red population of tracers; LRG orientation is uncorrelated to the blue population of neighbour galaxies. These results add evidence to the alignment effects between primaries and satellites detected at low redshifts. We conclude that such alignments were already present at z ∼ 0.5.  相似文献

We examine the ability of the future Planck mission to provide a catalogue of galaxy clusters observed via their Sunyaev–Zel'dovich (SZ) distortion in the cosmic microwave background (CMB). For this purpose we produce full-sky SZ maps based on N -body simulations and scaling relations between cluster properties for several cosmological models. We extrapolate the N -body simulations by a mass function to high redshifts in order to obtain a realistic SZ background. The simulated Planck observations include, besides the thermal and kinematic SZ effects, contributions from the primordial CMB, extragalactic point sources as well as Galactic dust, free–free and synchrotron emission. A harmonic-space maximum-entropy method is used to separate the SZ signal from contaminating components in combination with a cluster detection algorithm based on thresholding and flux integration to identify clusters and to obtain their fluxes. We estimate a survey sensitivity limit (depending on the quality of the recovered cluster flux) and provide cluster survey completeness and purity estimates. We find that, given our modelling and detection algorithm, Planck will reliably detect at least several thousands of clusters over the full sky. The exact number depends on the particular cosmological model (up to 10 000 cluster detections in a concordance ΛCDM model with  σ8= 0.9  ). We show that the Galaxy does not significantly affect the cluster detection. Furthermore, the dependence of the thermal SZ power spectrum on the matter variance on scales of  8 h −1  Mpc and the quality of its reconstruction by the employed method are investigated. Our simulations suggest that the Planck cluster sample will not only be useful as a basis for follow-up observations, but also will have the ability to provide constraints on cosmological parameters.  相似文献
