The screening of potential chemicals for control of Bemisia tabaci on poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima c.v. Lilo Pink) plants using a leaf dipping technique was investigated. All relevant B. tabaci lifestages (eggs, larvae and adults) were investigated. In leaf dipping tests, Certis spraying oil was the only compound to show potential to be used as a control agent against B. tabaci eggs, with 81% obtained mortality. Oberon resulted in no mortality of B. tabaci eggs in the reported experiments. Leaf dipping against second instar and adult B. tabaci proved more effective for all chemical products. Dipping techniques using Majestik, Certis spraying oil and Agri- 50 E all resulted in high second instar larval mortality (93, 87 and 85.5 %, respectively). Certis spraying oil again resulted in a high efficacy against adult B. tabaci with 100 % mortality obtained. The potential of the various chemicals to be incorporated into integrated pest management strategies for the control of B. tabaci is discussed.  相似文献

The majority of recent quarantine schedules have relied on methyl bromide fumigation. However, due to the phase-out of this fumigant in January 2005 alternative treatments are needed. Four alternative chemical fumigants were tested for their potential to replace methyl bromide as a control agent for Bemisia tabaci, Liriomyza huidobrensis and Frankliniella occidentalis. Phosphine at 2 g/m3 gave promising results at 15 °C with complete mortality of all insects after 24 h exposure. Sulphuryl fluoride, ethyl formate and acetaldehyde caused severe damage to plant foliage after only 4 h exposure. However, sulphuryl fluoride produced 100 % mortality of L. huidobrensis pupae after only 2 h exposure. In a large scale test using phosphine 2 g/m3 at 15 °C complete mortality of L. huidobrensis eggs and pupae was recorded after a 24 h exposure. However, only 98.5 and 86 % mortality of B. tabaci eggs and F. occidentalis eggs, respectively, was recorded after this treatment. Treatments with phosphine produced no significant detrimental effects on subsequent plant growth. The potential of these chemicals to act as alternatives to methyl bromide as quarantine fumigants is discussed.  相似文献

This work illustrates the toxicological impact of pesticide methyl parathion (MP) (dust—2 % active ingredient, a.i.) on growth and reproduction performance in tropical earthworms: Metaphire posthuma (endogeic), Lampito mauritii (anecic) and Allolobophora parva (epigeic). A total of three concentrations (a.i. g kg?1 dry test soil), 1.00 (T 1), 1.125 (T 2) and 2.25 (T 3) of MP, were applied in test substrate to examine the impact on mortality, individual live weight changes and reproduction patterns in test species over 60 days under laboratory conditions. MP caused significant mortality in all tested species, and median lethal dose (LD50) for L. mauritii, M. posthuma and A. parva was 24.85, 23.64 and 22.67 mg a.i., respectively. The individual live weight loss was 27.0–37.0 % in L. mauritii, 36.0–57.1 % in M. posthuma and 1.2–11.0 % in A. parva in different test concentrations. The pesticide-exposed worms produced less cocoons than control, but in L. mauritii, an unusual reproduction (hormesis) was recorded. Results suggested the species-specific toxicity of MP against tropical earthworms.  相似文献

This study presents the standardization of nutrient concentration, pH and temperature required to decolorize the anerobically treated distillery spent wash using the fungus Cladosporium cladosporioides. Experiments were carried out to measure the decolorization of distillery spent wash effluent and it was found to be effective in acidic environment. From the results it was observed that a maximum color reduction of 52.6 % and Chemichal Oxygen Demand. removal of 62.5 % were achieved. The optimum conditions required for the growth of the fungus was found to be 5 g/L of fructose, 3 g/L of peptone, 5 pH and 35 °C. It was also observed that during the process a maximum of 1.2 g of fungal growth was attained. Decolorizing ability of the fungus was confirmed using spectrophotometer and High Performance Liquid Chromatography analysis. Single factorial experimental design was used to optimize the parameters. Apart from decolorization it was observed that fungus also has the ability to degrade the spent wash efficiently. This investigation could be an approach towards control of environmental pollution and health hazards of people in and around the distillery unit.  相似文献

Marattialean-fossil foliage, assigned to Pecopteris Brongniart, was an important and widespread floral component in Late Pennsylvanian mires, with phylogenetic affinity to extant marattialean taxa in tropical regions. Marattialean fossil taxonomy is, however, still uncertain. Specimens from the Pilsen limnic Basin, Westphalian D, Czech Republic, represent fertile marattialean foliage of Pecopteris (Asterotheca) nyranensis and Pecopteris (Asterotheca) miltonii, and sterile foliage of Pecopteris aspidioides and Pecopteris polypodioides. Taxonomic parameters for their assignments included cuticle, stomatal morphologies (studied for the first time), and in situ reproductive organs and spores. Chemotaxonomic interpretations hinge on fidelity of preservation of compounds, or molecular fragments thereof, that were synthesized by the once-living plants. This preservation state was possibly due to the thermal history (maximum temperature of 130 °C) in the Pilsen Basin, acidic preservation conditions, lithology and facies stability.Although subtle, the four pecopterid species are differentiable from one another by combined FTIR characteristics, supporting taxonomy. The ratio of CH2/CH3 is hypothesized to be a chemotaxonomic parameter for Pennsylvanian pteridophylls, both in seed and true ferns that have previously been studied. The purpose of this research was to test the ability of selected fungus Trichoderma harzianum for municipal solid waste leachate treatment. The research carried out by inoculating the enzyme produced by T. harzianum with different ratio (10% up to 80% v/v) of solid waste leachate. The findings clearly indicated that the enzymatic addition was effectively acted (86.09% of chemical oxygen demand removed), and the rate of chemical degradation amended treatment enhanced as compared to control. Also, the enzymatic addition excellently reduced the inhibition of germination (35.8 ± 0.7) of seed (Zea mays L.) and improved the environmental quality of treated leachate. Therefore, these results can be use to articulate the preliminary feedstock for pilot to field-scale application.  相似文献

Dung from a mammoth was preserved under frozen conditions in Alaska. The mammoth lived during the early part of the Late Glacial interstadial (ca 12,300 BP). Microfossils, macroremains and ancient DNA from the dung were studied and the chemical composition was determined to reconstruct both the paleoenvironment and paleobiology of this mammoth. Pollen spectra are dominated by Poaceae, Artemisia and other light-demanding taxa, indicating an open, treeless landscape (‘mammoth steppe’). Fruits and seeds support this conclusion. The dung consists mainly of cyperaceous stems and leaves, with a minor component of vegetative remains of Poaceae. Analyses of fragments of the plastid rbcL gene and trnL intron and nrITS1 region, amplified from DNA extracted from the dung, supplemented the microscopic identifications. Many fruit bodies with ascospores of the coprophilous fungus Podospora conica were found inside the dung ball, indicating that the mammoth had eaten dung. The absence of bile acids points to mammoth dung. This is the second time that evidence for coprophagy of mammoths has been derived from the presence of fruit bodies of coprophilous fungi in frozen dung. Coprophagy might well have been a common habit of mammoths. Therefore, we strongly recommend that particular attention should be given to fungal remains in future fossil dung studies.  相似文献

Uptake of anthropogenic CO2 by the oceans is altering seawater chemistry with potentially serious consequences for coral reef ecosystems due to the reduction of seawater pH and aragonite saturation state (Ωarag). The objectives of this long-term study were to investigate the viability of two ecologically important reef-building coral species, massive Porites sp. and Stylophora pistillata, exposed to high pCO2 (or low pH) conditions and to observe possible changes in physiologically related parameters as well as skeletal isotopic composition. Fragments of Porites sp. and S. pistillata were kept for 6-14 months under controlled aquarium conditions characterized by normal and elevated pCO2 conditions, corresponding to pHT values of 8.09, 7.49, and 7.19, respectively. In contrast with shorter, and therefore more transient experiments, the long experimental timescale achieved in this study ensures complete equilibration and steady state with the experimental environment and guarantees that the data provide insights into viable and stably growing corals. During the experiments, all coral fragments survived and added new skeleton, even at seawater Ωarag < 1, implying that the coral skeleton is formed by mechanisms under strong biological control. Measurements of boron (B), carbon (C), and oxygen (O) isotopic composition of skeleton, C isotopic composition of coral tissue and symbiont zooxanthellae, along with physiological data (such as skeletal growth, tissue biomass, zooxanthellae cell density, and chlorophyll concentration) allow for a direct comparison with corals living under normal conditions and sampled simultaneously. Skeletal growth and zooxanthellae density were found to decrease, whereas coral tissue biomass (measured as protein concentration) and zooxanthellae chlorophyll concentrations increased under high pCO2 (low pH) conditions. Both species showed similar trends of δ11B depletion and δ18O enrichment under reduced pH, whereas the δ13C results imply species-specific metabolic response to high pCO2 conditions. The skeletal δ11B values plot above seawater δ11B vs. pH borate fractionation curves calculated using either the theoretically derived αB value of 1.0194 (Kakihana et al. (1977) Bull. Chem. Soc. Jpn.50, 158) or the empirical αB value of 1.0272 (Klochko et al. (2006) EPSL248, 261). However, the effective αB must be greater than 1.0200 in order to yield calculated coral skeletal δ11B values for pH conditions where Ωarag ? 1. The δ11B vs. pH offset from the seawater δ11B vs. pH fractionation curves suggests a change in the ratio of skeletal material laid down during dark and light calcification and/or an internal pH regulation, presumably controlled by ion-transport enzymes. Finally, seawater pH significantly influences skeletal δ13C and δ18O. This must be taken into consideration when reconstructing paleo-environmental conditions from coral skeletons.  相似文献

Ectomycorrhiza-forming fungi (EMF) alter the nutrient-acquisition capabilities of vascular plants, and may play an important role in mineral weathering and the partitioning of products of weathering in soils under nutrient-limited conditions. In this study, we isolated the weathering function of Suillus tomentosus in liquid-cultures with biotite micas incubated at room temperature. We hypothesized that the fungus would accelerate weathering by hyphal attachment to biotite surfaces and transmission of nutrient cations via direct exchange into the fungal biomass. We combined a mass-balance approach with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) to estimate weathering rates and study dissolution features on biotite surfaces. Weathering of biotite flakes was about 2-3 orders of magnitude faster in shaken liquid-cultures with fungus compared to shaken controls without fungus, but with added inorganic acids. Adding fungus in nonshaken cultures caused a higher dissolution rate than in inorganic pH controls without fungus, but it was not significantly faster than organic pH controls without fungus. The K+, Mg2+ and Fe2+ from biotite were preferentially partitioned into fungal biomass in the shaken cultures, while in the nonshaken cultures, K+ and Mg2+ was lost from biomass and Fe2+ bioaccumulated much less. Fungal hyphae attached to biotite surfaces, but no significant surface changes were detected by SEM. When cultures were shaken, the AFM images of basal planes appeared to be rougher and had abundant dissolution channels, but such channel development was minor in nonshaken conditions. Even under shaken conditions the channels only accounted for only 1/100 of the total dissolution rate of 2.7 × 10−10 mol of biotite m−2 s−1. The results suggest that fungal weathering predominantly occurred not by attachment and direct transfer of nutrients via hyphae, but because of the acidification of the bulk liquid by organic acids, fungal respiration (CO2), and complexation of cations which accelerated dissolution of biotite. Results further suggest that both carbohydrate source (abundant here) and a host with which nutrients are exchanged (missing here) may be required for EMF to exert an important weathering effect in soils. Unsaturated conditions and physical dispersal of nutrient-rich minerals in soils may also confer a benefit for hyphal growth and attachment, and promote the attachment-mediated weathering which has been observed elsewhere on soil mineral surfaces.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments on the branching, symbiont-bearing coral genus Porites and Acropora have been carried out to determine the dependence of the skeletal boron isotopic composition (δ11B) on the pH of seawater. The results show a clear relationship similar to previously established empirical calibrations for planktonic foraminifera and inorganic calcite. A −0.6‰ offset exists between P. cylindrica and A. nobilis which is systematic over the pH range of 7.7-8.2. To test whether the δ11B of coral skeletons changes with physiological processes such as photosynthesis and respiration, corals were grown along a depth transect in their natural environment and under controlled conditions in the laboratory at varying light intensities and food supply. Although we also observe an isotopic offset between P. compressa and Montipora verrucosa, neither experimental treatment systematically changed the δ11B of the two species. These findings are encouraging for using the boron isotope paleo-pH proxy in corals, because it appears that seawater pH is the dominant control on the boron isotopic composition in corals.  相似文献

Carbonation of partially serpentinized and weathered peridotites was studied experimentally under hydrothermal conditions (T: 200 °C, PCO2: 130-180 bars). Experiments were performed in a closed system using whole rock drill core samples (height: 1 cm, diameter: 1 cm) as starting material. The initial samples were composed mainly of meshwork serpentine, relicts of primary olivine and an olivine weathering product (deweylite assemblage). Two types of solutions, each with a total salt content corresponding to that of average seawater (35 g/L dissolved salts), were used: (1) a Na-Ca-Cl solution (12.5 g/L CaCl2 + 22.5 g/L NaCl) and (2) a NaCl solution (35 g/L NaCl). After 15-25 days of experimental treatment, the samples were partly covered with carbonates. In addition, noticeable carbonation reactions had occurred below the sample surfaces within zones with thicknesses up to 250 μm. In the Na-Ca-Cl solution, both the olivine relicts and the deweylite assemblage were partly replaced by calcite along the surrounding serpentine veins. However, the extent of calcitization was found to be considerably larger for the deweylite assemblage than for the olivine. Bulk fluid analyses show an increase in the Mg and Si concentrations with reaction time. In the NaCl solution, the deweylite assemblage was partly dissolved resulting in large voids within the reaction zone. In contrast, the olivine was replaced by magnesite. Under the conditions of our experiments, the meshwork serpentine was not reactive, but aided fluid infiltration into the rock samples. The experimentally produced microtextures closely resemble those found in natural examples. Our study elucidates the mechanisms by which carbonates form in ultramafic rocks under relatively high PCO2-T conditions and particularly in the presence of Ca-bearing aqueous solutions. The existence of a serpentine meshtexture and the presence of weathering products formed from primary Mg-silicates may have significant beneficial effects on in situ CO2 mineral sequestration in ultramafic rocks.  相似文献

In this study, nineteen brine samples from the Qarhan Salt Lake (QSL) in western China were collected and analyzed for boron (B) and chlorine (Cl) concentrations, total dissolved solids (TDS), pH values and stable B isotopic compositions. The B concentrations and δ11B values of brines in the QSL range from 51.6 mg/L to 138.4 mg/L, and from +9.32‰ to +13.08‰, respectively. By comparison of B concentrations and TDS of brines in QSL with evaporation paths of brackish water, we found that B enrichment of brines primarily results from strong evaporation and concentration of Qarhan lake water. Combining with comparisons of B concentrations, TDS, pH values and δ11B values of brines, previously elemental ratios (K/Cl, Mg/Cl, Ca/Cl, B/Cl) and δ11B values of halite from a sediment core (ISL1A), we observe good correlations between B concentrations and TDS, TDS and pH values, pH and δ11B values of brines, which demonstrate that higher B concentrations and more positive δ11B values of halite indicate higher salinity of the Qarhan paleolake water as well as drier paleoclimatic conditions. Based on this interpretation of the δ11B values of halite in core ISL1A, higher salinity of the Qarhan paleolake occurred during two intervals, around 46–34 ka and 26–9 ka, which are almost coincident with the upper and lower halite-dominated salt layers in core ISL1A, drier climate phases documented from the δ18O record of carbonate in core ISL1A and the paleomoisture record in monsoonal central Asia, and a higher solar insolation at 30°N. These results demonstrate that the δ11B values of halite in the arid Qaidam Basin could be regarded as a new proxy for reconstructing the salinity record of paleolake water as well as paleoclimate conditions.  相似文献

Phenotypic variation within species can have community- and ecosystem-level effects. Such variation may be particularly important in ecosystem engineers, including many invasive species, because of the strong influence of these species on their surrounding communities and environment. We combined field surveys and glasshouse experiments to investigate phenotypic variation within the invasive common reed, Phragmites australis, among four estuarine source sites along the east coast of North America. Field surveys revealed variation in P. australis height and stem density among source sites. In a glasshouse environment, percent germination of P. australis seeds also varied across source sites. To test the degree to which phenotypic variation in P. australis reflected genetic or environmental differences, we conducted a glasshouse common garden experiment assessing the performance of P. australis seedlings from the four source sites across a salinity gradient. Populations maintained differences in morphology and growth in a common glasshouse environment, indicating a genetic component to the observed phenotypic variation. Despite this variation, experimentally increased porewater salinity consistently reduced P. australis stem density, height, and biomass. Differences in these morphological metrics are important because they are correlated with the impacts of invasive P. australis on the ecological communities it invades. Our results indicate that both colonization and spread of invasive P. australis will be dependent on the environmental and genetic context. Additional research on intraspecific variation in invasive species, particularly ecosystem engineers, will improve assessments of invasion impacts and guide management decisions in estuarine ecosystems.  相似文献

The Korba aquifer on the east coast of Cape Bon has been overexploited since the 1960s with a resultant reversal of the hydraulic gradient and a degradation of the quality due to seawater intrusion. In 2008 the authorities introduced integrated water resources planning based on a managed aquifer recharge with treated wastewater. Water quality monitoring was implemented in order to determine the different system components and trace the effectiveness of the artificial recharge. Groundwater samples taken from recharge control piezometers and surrounding farm wells were analyzed for their chemical contents, for their B isotopes, a proven tracer of groundwater salinization and domestic sewage, and their carbamazepine content, an anti-epileptic known to pass through wastewater treatment and so recognized as a pertinent tracer of wastewater contamination. The system equilibrium was permanently disturbed by the different temporal dynamics of continuous processes such as cation exchange, and by threshold processes linked to oxidation–reduction conditions. The B isotopic compositions significantly shifted back-and-forth due to mixing with end-members of various origin. Under the variable contribution of meteoric recharge, the Plio-Quaternary groundwater (δ11B of 35–40.6‰, a mean B concentration of 30 μmol/L, no carbamazepine, n = 7) was subject to seawater intrusion that induced a high δ11B level (δ11B of 41.5–48.0‰, a mean B concentration of 36 μmol/L, and n = 8). Fresh groundwater (δ11B of 19.89‰, B concentration of 2.8 μmol/L, no carbamazepine) was detected close to the recharge site and may represent the deep Miocene pole which feeds the upper Plio-Quaternary aquifer. The managed recharge water (δ11B of 10.67–13.8‰, n = 3) was brackish and of poor quality with a carbamazepine content showing a large short term variability with an average daily level of 328 ± 61 ng/L. A few piezometers in the vicinity of the recharge site gradually acquired a B isotopic composition close to the wastewater signature and showed an increasing carbamazepine content (from 20 to 910 ng/L). The combination of B isotopic signatures with B and carbamazepine contents is a useful tool to assess sources and mixing of treated wastewaters in groundwaters. Effluent quality needs to be greatly improved before injection to prevent further degradation of groundwater quality.  相似文献

This research compares the nitrogen monoxide and methane exhaust emissions produced by the engines of two conventional chainsaws (a professional and an amateur one) to those produced by a catalytic. For all the three types of chainsaws, measurements were taken under the following three different functional modes: (a) normal conditions with respect to infrequent acceleration, (b) normal conditions, (c) use of high-quality motor oil with a clean filter. The experiment was extended much further by considering measurements of nitrogen monoxide and methane concentrations for all the three types of chainsaws, in respect to four additional operation forms. More specifically, the emissions were measured (a) under normal conditions, (b) under the application of frequent acceleration, (c) with the use of poor-quality motor oil and (d) with chainsaws using impure filters. The experiments and data collection were performed in the forest under “real conditions.” Measurements conducted under real conditions were named “control” measurements and were used for future comparisons. The authors used a portable analyzer (Dräger X-am 5000 a Dräger Sensor XXSNO and a CatEx 125 PRCH 4 ) for the measurement of exhaust emissions. The said analyzer can measure the concentrations of exhaust gas components online, while the engine is running under field conditions. In this paper, we have been employed fuzzy sets and fuzzy Chi-square tests in order to model air pollution produced by each type of chainsaw under each type of operation condition. The overall conclusion is that the catalytic chainsaw is the most environmentally friendly.  相似文献

Coral reefs are deteriorating worldwide due to various stresses, including pollution of hazardous chemicals such as antifouling chemicals. Occurrence and impacts of a new antifouling biocide Irgarol-1051 (2-methylthio-4-tert- butylamino -6-cyclopropylamino -s-triazine) have been studied in coral reef waters around Okinawa Islands, Japan. The average concentration of Irgarol detected at commercial and fisheries Ports was 24.70 ± 9.88 ng/L. In Naha Bay, the average concentration of Irgarol was 10.00±12.98 ng/L. The average level detected around the Ports has already approaches the environmental risk limit for the marine organisms. Irgarol was detected in waters at the frequency of 92.3 % (24/26) of the total samples collected during two sampling campaigns (September and December, 2007) at the Ports. In Naha Bay, Irgarol was detected by 40.5 % (17/42) of the total water samples collected monthly from Sep., 2007 to Feb., 2008, indicating that Irgarol is widely detected along the coastal shorelines of Okinawa Island. The eco- toxicological study revealed that the rate of photosynthesis in the coral Galaxea fascicularis was significantly reduced by 18 % and 121 % relative to control when the corals were exposed to 1000 and 10,000 ng/L of Irgarol, respectively. The calcification rate dropped by 98.3 % relative to control when the corals were exposed to 10,000 ng/L of Irgarol. The results of the present study report the wide occurrence of new antifouling biocide Irgarol around coastal areas of Okinawa Island. However, the contamination does not pose serious threat on the photosynthesis and calcification of corals under short term exposure (96 h).  相似文献

To analyze the variation of physiological responses between Nymphaea tetragona Georgi. and Pontederia cordata L. and the water qualities under aeration conditions, the selected plants were cultivated in 12 purifying-tanks (aeration, non aeration), to treat heavily polluted river water. The characteristics of both plants were investigated, which included contents of chlorophyll and soluble protein, activities of peroxidase and catalase, accumulations of nitrogen and phosphorus, densities of tillers and roots, lengths of roots, culms and leaves, biomass of roots and shoots. The water qualities were analyzed correspondingly. Results indicated that aeration affected morphological and physiological characteristics of the plants and the water qualities and effects became more significant on N. tetragona than P. cordata. Biomass and length of roots, culms and leaves under the non aeration conditions exceeded that under the aeration conditions. Aeration contributed to the activities increase of peroxidase and catalase of the roots and the contents decrease of chlorophyll and soluble protein of the leaves. Nitrogen and phosphorus contents of the roots, culms and leaves increased under the non aeration conditions. Aeration resulted in tillers and roots densities of N. tetragona decreased, while they increased for P. cordata. Total phosphorus and soluble phosphorus removals decreased 8.42 % and 8.05 % in the tank with N. tetragona under the aeration conditions. In the tank with P. cordata, total nitrogen and NH4+ ?N removals increased 14.44 % and 16.06 % under the aeration conditions. This work provided valuable data for optimizing the plants allocation in the ecological restoration project of the polluted water.  相似文献

From a smaller open-pit area in the roof shale of the basal Cantabrian coal seam in Sydney Coalfield, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada, large amounts of the pteridosperm foliage Alethopteris zeilleri (Ragot) were found. This foliage is associated with abundant, naked medullosalean axes and dichotomies of varying sizes, up to 0.80-m long, cauline structures 0.90 m and 1.3 m long, detached ovules assigned to Pachytesta incrassata Brongniart, rare male-pollen organs of the type Dolerotheca Halle, rooted tree ferns in life position, and one specimen each of a juvenile medullosalean frond and root mantle. The fossils are compression/impression-preserved, and the foliage yielded thickly cutinized cuticles with unoriented cells (57–103 by 27–57 μm) in intercostal fields. Ultimate rachises, and abaxial surfaces (excluding costal fields) show a mixture of simple and complexly-branched trichomes, and two different structural bases. These, together with fractal dimensionality of curvatures of anticlinal walls in intercostal fields, have taxonomic potential for alethopterids.The finds suggest reconstructing A. zeilleri (Ragot) as a tree, 5–7 m high, that bore both P. incrassata Brongniart and Dolerotheca-type fructifications. A generalized physicochemical model of the response of marine organisms’ calcifying fluids to CO2-induced ocean acidification is proposed. The model is based upon the hypothesis that some marine calcifiers induce calcification by elevating pH, and thus ΩA, of their calcifying fluid by removing protons (H+). The model is explored through two end-member scenarios: one in which a fixed number of H+ is removed from the calcifying fluid, regardless of atmospheric pCO2, and another in which a fixed external-internal H+ ratio ([H+]E/[H+]I) is maintained. The model is able to generate the full range of calcification response patterns observed in prior ocean acidification experiments and is consistent with the assertion that organisms’ calcification response to ocean acidification is more negative for marine calcifiers that exert weaker control over their calcifying fluid pH. The model is empirically evaluated for the temperate scleractinian coral Astrangia poculata with in situ pH microelectrode measurements of the coral’s calcifying fluid under control and acidified conditions. These measurements reveal that (1) the pH of the coral’s calcifying fluid is substantially elevated relative to its external seawater under both control and acidified conditions, (2) the coral’s [H+]E/[H+]I is approximately the same under control and acidified conditions, and (3) the coral removes fewer H+ from its calcifying fluid under acidified conditions than under control conditions. Thus, the carbonate system dynamics of A. poculata’s calcifying fluid appear to be most consistent with the fixed [H+]E/[H+]I end-member scenario. Similar microelectrode experiments performed on additional taxa are required to assess the model’s general applicability.  相似文献
