The Mauritius Radio Telescope (MRT) is a Fourier synthesis, non-coplanar T array. The primary objective of the telescope is to survey the southern sky at 151.5 MHz in the declination range -70° to -10°. Due to non-coplanarity, wide-field imaging and deconvolution of wide field images made using MRT are challenging problems in applications of radio interferometric techniques. This paper discusses the usefulness and limitations of the tangent plane approximation in transforming the measured visibilities to wide field images and in estimating the point spread function (PSF) required for the deconvolution. The Mauritius Radio Telescope (MRT) has been built with the main objective of surveying the southern sky at meter wavelengths. MRT is a Fourier synthesis, T-shaped non-coplanar array. It consists of a2048 m long East-West arm with 1024 fixed helices and a 880 m long South arm with 15 trolleys. Each trolley has four helices. A 512 channel, 2-bit 3-level complex correlation receiver is used to process the data from the EW and S group outputs. At least 60 days of observing are required for obtaining the Fourier components of the brightness distribution of the sky required to complete the survey. The MRT survey will be one of the most extensive survey at low frequencies providing a moderately deep radio catalog reaching a source density of about 2 × 104 sr-1 over most of the sky south of δ=-10°with an angular resolution of 4' × 4.6' sec (δ) and a limiting flux density of 200 mJy (3 σ level) at 151 MHz. This paper will describe the telescope, the observations carried out so far, challenges of imaging with the data acquired over a period exceeding four years with a non-coplanar array, and summarises the results obtained so far. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The MRT survey will be by far one of the most extensive survey at low frequencies. This survey will provide a moderately deep radio catalog reaching a source density of about 2 × 104 sr-1over the southern sky with an angular resolution of 4' × 4' and a limiting flux density of 70 mJy (1 σ) at 151 MHz. The availability of zero spacing and short baselines in the MRT array will make it sensitive to the background temperature and to large scale features in the sky. In addition to this feature, the low frequency operation makes a study of continuum emission from large radio sources by MRT to have several interesting and important implications in the study of radio galaxies. This paper discusses the parameter space of radio galaxies which can be explored using the MRT. Images of a few extended radio galaxies are also presented. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

This paper presents observations of plasma blobs by nightglow OI 630.0 nm emissions using ground-based techniques, all sky imager and photometer from Kolhapur. The nightglow observations have been made at low latitude station, Kolhapur (16.42°N, 74.2°E, and 10.6°N dip lat.) during clear moonless nights for period of October 2011–April 2012. Generally, these occur 3 h after sunset (18:00 IST). Herein we have calculated velocities of plasma blobs using scanning method, introduced by Pimenta et al. (Adv Space Res 27:1219–1224, 2001). The average zonal drift velocity (eastward) of the plasma blobs were found to be 133 ms?1 and vary between 100 and 200 ms?1. The width (east–west expansion) and length (north–south expansion) of plasma blobs is calculated by recently developed method of Sharma et al. (Curr Sci 106(08):1085–1093, 2014b). Their mean width and length were in the range of 70–180 and 500–950 km respectively. The study shows that localized eastward polarization electric field plays an important role in the generation of plasma blobs.  相似文献

New data about the top clouds of Venus were obtained during the radiometric experiment on-board the Venera 9 and Venera 10 orbiters. A diurnal component of the ir thermal radiation was determined for the latitude range ?40, +50°. The brightness temperature of radiation referred to the normal was measured; it was 244°K at night and 239°K at the subsolar point for the 7- to 13-, 17- to 30-μm bands. Minimum temperatures correspond to the meridian of local time 16.00h and are 232°K. There is also a zone of lower temperatures in the region of local time 7.5h. Absolute temperatures were measured with an accuracy of ?1.9°+1.2°. Thermal radiation has no distinct latitudinal dependence but has a day-night asymmetry, with the night radiation flux exceeding that on the day side by 17%. The limb-darkening law for thermal radiation is rather complicated, depending on the time of day. There are at least two states of the radiating cloud cover: day and night. The extinction coefficient is close to 0.24 km?1. The analysis shows that the source function of the medium is close to Planck's function. During the day the flux of thermal radiation is assumed to be weakened by an aerosol medium forming by photochemical processes. Comparison of experimental and calculated data yields a particle concentration in the radiating cloud cover of about 95 cm?3. Experimental data and the results of ground-based measurements were used to determine the radiometric albedo of Venus, 0.79?0.01+0.02.  相似文献

We analyse the two-dimensional distribution of quasars for clustering. In an area of 40 square degrees centered at α = 1h44m, δ = −40°00', we found 1092 quasar candidates in a systematic search with slitless spectra. A two-dimensional power spectrum analysis gave the result that the quasars are weakly clustered, with a clustering scale of about 0.5°. This corresponds to 35 Mpc at the mean redshift of 2.  相似文献

We are monitoring a 6° wide stripe along the southern Galactic disk simultaneously in the r and i bands, using a robotic 15‐cm twin telescope of the Universitätsternwarte Bochum near Cerro Armazones in Chile. Utilising the telescope's 2.7° field of view, the survey aims at observing a mosaic of 268 fields once per month and to monitor dedicated fields once per night. The survey reaches a sensitivity from 10m down to 18m (AB system), with a completeness limit of r ∼ 15.5m and i ∼ 14.5m which – due to the instrumental pixel size of 2.″4 – refers to stars separated by >3″. This brightness range is ideally suited to examine the intermediately bright stellar population supposed to be saturated in deep variability surveys with large telescopes. To connect to deep surveys or to explore faint long term variables, coadded images of several nights reach a depth of ∼ 20m. The astrometric accuracy is better than 1″, as determined from the overlap of neighbouring fields. We describe the survey design, the data properties and our procedures to derive the light curves and to extract variable stars. We present a list of ∼2200 variable stars identified in 50 square degrees with 50‐80 observations between May and October 2011. For bright stars the variability amplitude A reaches down to A ∼ 0.05m, while at the faint end variations of A > 1m are detected. About 200 stars were known tobe variable, and their amplitudes and periods – as far as determinable from our six month monitoring – agree with literature values, demonstrating the performance of the Bochum Galactic Disk Survey (© 2012 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We observed comet Hale-Bopp (C/1995 O1) at Pic du Midi Observatory in 1997 from February 2.24 UT to March 31.89 UT with the 1.05-m telescope equipped with a CCD camera and broad- and narrow-band IHW filters. A total of 30000 images were acquired both during night- and day-time. The images were automatically reduced and all the images obtained within 10 min. were co-added to give a set of ∼1000 images used during the analysis. We can identify two jets on the images. The position angle of the brightest jet from February 2.24 UT to March 5.22 UT is measured using an automatic routine which searches for the averaged position angle of the maximum of brightness at a projected distance of 3200–6100 km from the optocenter. A preliminary model of nucleus rotation is used to fit the data and retrieve the rotational parameters of the nucleus. The best fit is found for a source located at a latitude of 64 ± 3°, a sidereal rotation period of 11.35 ± 0.04 h and a right ascension and declination of the North pole of 275 ± 10° and -57 ± 10°. This preliminary analysis shows no evidence for a precession. Grains with velocities of 450–600 m s−1 and radii <;∼ 1 μm dominate the optical scattering cross section in the jets. This paper describes a wide-field survey made at 34.5 MHz using GEETEE,1 the low frequency telescope at Gauribidanur (latitude 13°36′12′′N). This telescope was used in the transit mode and by per forming 1-D synthesis along the north-south direction the entire observable sky was mapped in a single day. This minimized the problems that hinder wide-field low-frequency mapping. This survey covers the declination range of-50° to + 70° (- 33° to +61° without aliasing) and the complete 24 hours of right ascension. The synthesized beam has a resolution of 26′ x 42′ sec (δ- 14°. 1). The sensitivity of the survey is 5 Jy/beam (1σ). Special care has been taken to ensure that the antenna responds to all angular scale structures and is suitable for studies of both point sources and extended objects This telescope is jointly operated by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore and the Roman Research Institute, Bangalore.  相似文献

The results of spectroscopic observations of 25 objects of the Second Byurakan Spectroscopic Sky Survey in a field with central coordinates a = 08h00m, δ = +59° are given. The spectra were obtained on the 2.6- m telescope of the Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory, National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, and the 6- m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory, Russian Academy of Sciences, in 1997– 1998 with a spectral resolution of from 5 to 15Å. The redshifts and absolute stellar magnitudes of all the galaxies were determined and they were classified. A histogram of the redshift distribution of the complete sample of galaxies in this field of the survey is given.  相似文献

Polarimetric reflectance measurements have been made at a wavelength of for a suite of predominantly lunar regolith simulants in support of development efforts for the BepiColombo Laser Altimeter (BELA). Measurements were made using an instrument at the University of Bern, Switzerland, that has been modified to accommodate photometric characterizations of laboratory samples down to 0° phase angle (g) with linearly polarized illumination and a linearly polarized receiver. The data reveal opposition surges that are dominated by polarization state-conserving reflectance terms for all samples. Relative strengths of the trans-state reflectance terms are lowest for the darkest samples, suggesting that multiple scattering is responsible for state conversions. Normal albedo measurements of the lunar simulants range from 0.13 to 0.22 at zero illumination angle (i=0°). The total reflectance of the regolith simulants at g=0° were found to decrease with increasing i, which is inconsistent with predictions of reflectance models for Mercury. However, the g=0° reflectance remains higher at i>0° than would be expected for a gray Lambert surface that is scaled to the g=i=0° reflectance value. Polarization ratios for reflectance under polarized illumination but unconstrained emission show that the samples scatter light in the in-plane polarization state more efficiently than in the transverse state at g=0° and i>0°. The opposite is true for g>0° polarization ratios, which indicate that transverse polarized illumination scatters more efficiently at high g. The polarization effect appears to correlate with the sample's characteristic grain size, but the statistical basis of this trend is weak. The implications of these measurements upon the performance of the BELA instrument are discussed.  相似文献

Photographic and photoelectric observations of comet P/Halley's ion gas coma from CO+ at 4250 ? were part of the Bochum Halley Monitoring Program, conducted from 1986 February 17, to April 17 at the European Southern Observatory on La Silla (Chile). In this spectral range it is possible to watch the continuous formation, motion and expansion of plasma structures. To observe the morphology of these structures 32CO+ photos (glass plates) from P/Halley's comet have been analysed. They have a field of view of 28°.6× 28°.6 and were obtained from 1986 March 29, to April 17 with exposure times between 20 and120 minutes. All photos were digitized with a PDS 2020 GM (Photometric Data System) microdensitometer at the Astronomisches Institut derWestf?lischen Wilhelms-Universit?t in Münster (one pixel= 25 μm × 25 μm ≈ 46′.88×46′.88). After digitization the data were reduced to relative intensities, and the part with proper calibrations were also converted to absolute intensities, expressed in terms of column densities using the image data systems MIDAS (Munich Image Data Analysis System; ESO – Image Processing Group, 1988) and IHAP (Image Handling And Processing; Middleburg, 1983). With the help of the Stellingwerf-Theta-Minimum-Method (Stellingwerf, 1978) a period of (2.22 ± 0.09) days results from analysis of structures in the plasma-coma by subtracting subsequent images. This method is also compared with the Fourier method. There may be a second cycle with a period of about 3.6 days. The idea behind subtracting subsequent images is that rotation effects are only 10% phenomena on gas distribution. Difference images are than used to suppress the static component of the gas cloud. Nonthermal emission occurs in the cores of the 9.4- and 10.4-μm CO2 bands on Mars, and has been recently identified as a natural atmospheric laser. This paper presents observations of the total flux and center-to-limb dependence of this emission for Mars and Venus. The emission is believed to be excited by absorption of solar flux in the near-ir CO2 bands, followed by collisional transfer to the 00°1 state of CO2. A comparison is made between the observations and a detailed theoretical model based on this mechanism. It is found that the theoretical model successfully reproduces the observed center-to-limb dependence of this emission, to within the limits imposed by the spatial resolution of the observations. A comparison is also made between the observed fluxes and the predictions of the theoretical models. The observed flux from Mars agrees closely with the prediction of the model; the flux observed from Venus is 74% of the flux predicted by the model. This emission is utilized to obtain the kinetic temperatures of the Martian and Venusian mesospheres. For Mars near 70 km altitude, a rotational temperature analysis using five lines gives T = 135 ± 20°K. The frequency width of the emission is also analyzed to derive a temperature of 126 ± 6°K. In the case of the Venusian mesosphere near 109 km, the frequency width of the emission gives T = 204 ± 10°K.  相似文献

We have analyzed spectra of CO recorded with the instrument PFS onboard Mars Express in the (1-0) band. The dataset we used ranges in time from January until June 2004 (LS=331°.17 until LS=51°.61; end of Mars Year 26, beginning of Mars Year 27). The aim of this work was to determine the amplitude of the CO mixing ratio departures from the mean globally averaged value currently admitted (8±3×10-4) [Kaplan, L.D., Connes, J., Connes, P., 1969. Carbon monoxide in the martian atmosphere. Astron. J. 157, L187-L192] as a function of season, local time and location on the planet. We therefore processed the data from 90 calibrated orbits. The globally averaged CO mixing ratio value we derive from our dataset, 11.1×10-4, is compatible with the range found by Kaplan et al. [1969. Carbon monoxide in the martian atmosphere. Astron. J. 157, L187-L192], although somewhat higher than the “standard” value. However, the CO mixing ratio we retrieve exhibits large variations (roughly between 3×10-4 and 18×10-4). Such relative variations have been used on a statistical basis to derive main trends as a function of latitude for three LS ranges: 331-360°, 0-30° and 30-52°. For the first LS range, we seem to have an enhancement of the CO mixing ratio towards the northern latitudes, probably linked to the CO2 condensation in winter on the north polar cap. The situation for the two other LS ranges is not so clear, mainly as we lack data on the southern hemisphere. We roughly agree with the work of Krasnopolsky [2007. Long-term spectroscopic observations of Mars using IRTF/CSHELL: mapping of O2 dayglow, CO and search for CH4. Icarus 190, 93-102] for LS=331-360°, thus confirming the effect of seasonal condensation of CO2 on the north polar cap, but we have no agreement for other seasons.  相似文献

We report a detailed analysis of an interaction between two coronal mass ejections (CMEs) that were observed on 14?–?15 February 2011 and the corresponding radio enhancement, which was similar to the “CME cannibalism” reported by Gopalswamy et al. (Astrophys. J. 548, L91, 2001). A primary CME, with a mean field-of-view velocity of 669 km?s?1 in the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO)/Large Angle Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO), was more than as twice as fast as the slow CME preceding it (326 km?s?1), which indicates that the two CMEs interacted. A radio-enhancement signature (in the frequency range 1 MHz?–?400 kHz) due to the CME interaction was analyzed and interpreted using the CME data from LASCO and from the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) HI-1, radio data from Wind/Radio and Plasma Wave Experiment (WAVES), and employing known electron-density models and kinematic modeling. The following results are obtained: i) The CME interaction occurred around 05:00?–?10:00 UT in a height range 20?–?25 R. An unusual radio signature is observed during the time of interaction in the Wind/WAVES dynamic radio spectrum. ii) The enhancement duration shows that the interaction segment might be wider than 5 R. iii) The shock height estimated using density models for the radio enhancement region is 10?–?30 R. iv) Using kinematic modeling and assuming a completely inelastic collision, the decrease of kinetic energy based on speeds from LASCO data is determined to be 0.77×1023 J, and 3.67×1023 J if speeds from STEREO data are considered. vi) The acceleration, momentum, and force are found to be a=?168 m?s?2, I=6.1×1018 kg?m?s?1, and F=1.7×1015 N, respectively, using STEREO data.  相似文献

In a previous paper we presented a low-resolution (2°×2°) survey of radio recombination lines (RRLs) at 327 MHz in the longitude rangel=330° to 0° to 89°. In this paper, we present the results of a higher resolution (2°×6′) survey of RRLs from seven 2°-wide fields and two 6°-wide fields in the same longitude range. Observations were made using the Ooty Radio Telescope (ORT). A total of 252 spectra that were obtained are presented. RRLs were detected in almost all the individual positions within the fields withl<35° and at several individual positions within the fields in the longitude rangel=35° to 85°. Detailed analysis of the data towards the field centered at G45.5+0.0, shows that the line emission consists of discrete zones of ionized gas. The angular extent of these zones are likely to be one degree or more corresponding to a linear size of >110 pc at the kinematic distance.  相似文献

The first measurement of atomic oxygen concentration in the upper atmosphere using the resonance absorption lamp method was made 23 January 1974 in a flight from the Churchill Research Range (58.4°N, 94.1°W, geographic) in northern Canada. Earlier difficulties with the data analysis have been resolved to a limited extent, and a concentration profile over the range 90–155 km is presented here. In the interim period, the same technique has been employed by a number of investigators, but the importance of the present data is that the atomic oxygen concentration was measured by three independent methods on the same flight, aeronomical and mass spectrometric methods being used as well as resonance absorption. The results are in good agreement when current aeronomical understanding is employed. Comparison is made with other measurements and it is concluded that the high degree of variability observed may well be real. A simple argument based on these data shows that O2(c1Σ) cannot be the sole source of O(1S) and O2(b1Σ) in the aurora.  相似文献

Abstract— We have used a 3.0 m diameter liquid mirror telescope (LMT) coupled to a microchannel plate image‐intensified charge‐coupled device (CCD) detector to study the 1999 Leonid meteor shower. This is the largest aperture optical instrument ever utilized for meteor detection. While the observing system is sensitive down to stars of +18 astronomical magnitude under optimum conditions, when corrections for meteor motion are applied the majority of the meteors collected fall in the absolute magnitude range from +5 to +10, corresponding to photometric masses from about 10?7 to 10?9 kg. This is largely due to the fact that the field of view of the LMT was only 0.28°, so that only a small portion of the luminous meteor trail was recorded. While the flux of these small (1.4 times 10?9 kg) Leonid meteors is low (on the order of one Leonid meteor per hour per square kilometer perpendicular to the Leonid), we do have clear evidence that the Leonid stream contains particles in the mass range studied here. The data showed a possibly significant peak in Leonid flux (9.3 ± 3.5) for the 1 h period from 11:00 to 12:00 u.t. 1999 November 17 (solar longitude 234.653 to 234.695, epoch 2000.0), although the main trend of these results is a broad low‐level Leonid activity. There is evidence that small meteoroids are more widely distributed in the Leonid stream, as would be expected from cometary ejection stream models. As would be expected from an extrapolation of mass distribution indices for brighter meteors, the vast majority of meteors at this size are sporadic. The LMT is a powerful detector of sporadic meteors, with an average non‐Leonid detection rate of more than 140 meteor events per hour.  相似文献

A Microtek ScanMaker 9800XL TMA was used to scan 102 plates of 60° declination zone of the northern sky. The images were obtained within the scope of the FON project using the double wide-angle astrograph of the Main Astronomical Observatory (National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine). The procedure is described of processing these scans and compilation of the catalog of equatorial coordinates and brightness. Mean square errors of positions and B-magnitudes of 1 108 603 stars of the output catalog (in the range from 56 to 64° in declination and from 0 to 24 h in right ascension) largely depend on the position on the plate, multiplicity of overlapping, and stellar magnitude. The standard deviations are 0.10–0.32″ for coordinates and 0.04–16 m for stellar magnitudes. The average values of mean square deviations of data of the obtained catalog from data of PPMX and UCAC catalogs are 0.23″ and 0.18 m .  相似文献
