By processing the data of vertical ionospheric sounding in Almaty for 2000–2009, we obtained the distributions of the heights of the maximum (h m F) and bottom (h bot F) of the F2-layer, incremental changes in its semi-thickness (δh), the characteristic time of losses (τ), and the vertical displacement velocity of the node of the thermospheric wind (V) during the transitional time of the day during nighttime increases in the electron concentration at the layer maximum. The comparison of the measured V and modeled V m velocities showed a certain discrepancy. The influence of the altitude gradient of the meridional thermospheric wind velocity on the behaviors of h m F, h bot F, δh, and τ during nighttime increases in the electron concentration is studied.  相似文献

Nighttime height profiles of the amplitudes of large-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances (LSTIDs) obtained from the data of vertical sounding in Almaty (76°55′ E, 43°15′ N) for the period 2000–2007 are analyzed. The height profiles are plotted using the time variations in electron density N h (t) at a series of heights for the F region in the ionosphere with a height step of 10 km. In total, observations were conducted during 1166 nights, among which 581 nights are characterized by wave activity. Nights with the maximum amplitude of variations in N h (t) exceeding 25% are selected for analysis. The total number of such nights is 63; LSTIDs have been recorded in both magnetically quiet and active periods. The regressive ratios between the height of the F-region maximum and the height that corresponds to the maximum absolute amplitude of a wave, as well as between the values of the maximum amplitude at a height profile and the value of the amplitude of variations in N m F(t) at the layer maximum, are obtained.  相似文献

The equatorial ionosphere responses over Brazil to two intense magnetic storms that occurred during 2001 are investigated. The equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) and variations in the zonal electric field and meridional winds at different storms phases are studied using data collected by digisondes and GPS receivers. The difference between the F layer peak density (foF2) at an equatorial and a low latitude sites was used to quantify the EIA; while the difference between the true heights (hF) at the equatorial and an off-equatorial site was used to calculate the magnetic meridional winds. The vertical drift was calculated as dhF/dt. The results show prompt penetration electric fields causing unusual early morning development of the EIA, and disturbed dynamo electric field producing significant modification in the F region parameters. Variations to different degrees in the vertical drift, the thermospheric meridional winds and the EIA developments were observed depending on the storm phases.  相似文献

The measurements of the critical frequencies of the ionospheric F2 layer based on vertical radiosounding, which was performed with a CADI digital ionosonde at the Voeykovo magnetic–ionospheric observatory in February 2013, have been considered. The observations have been compared with the upper atmosphere numerical model (UAM) data for three days that differ in the amplitude and the character of solar and magnetic activity and correspond to quiet and moderately disturbed states of the ionosphere. The work was performed in order to improve the methods for determining the ionospheric state by vertical sounding ionograms. The time variations in the F2 layer critical frequency, electric field vector zonal component, and thermospheric wind velocity meridional component have been analyzed. Calculations were performed with three UAM variants. The UAM version providing the best agreement with the CADI ionosonde data was the version in which the neutral temperature, neutral composition, and pressure gradients are calculated according to the MSIS empirical model and the horizontal neutral wind velocity is determined by the equation of motion with pressure gradients from MSIS. The calculated values corresponded to the measurements, except those for the evening, because the electron density at the ionospheric F2 layer maximum depends more strongly on electric fields and thermospheric wind velocities during this period. Thus, the indicated UAM version with the above limitations can be used to determine the state of the subauroral ionosphere.  相似文献

Some of the characteristic features of thermospheric meridional winds during equinoctial period, associated with equatorial spread F (ESF) and their possible role in the triggering of ESF are presented through case studies of observational events under different geophysical conditions that essentially control the post-sunset F-layer height (h′F) rise. The present study reveals that the polarity and magnitude of the meridional winds become significant with the equatorward wind being present when the h′F is below a critical height for the instability to get triggered. The distinctly different characteristic features of the meridional winds during ESF and non-ESF events are presented and discussed.  相似文献

Based on the horizontal winds measured using SKiYMET meteor wind radar during the period of June 2004–May 2007, the seasonal and interannual variability of the diurnal and semidiurnal amplitudes and phases in the mesospheric and lower thermospheric (MLT) region over a low-latitude station Trivandrum (8.5°N) are investigated. The monthly values of amplitudes and phases are calculated using a composite day analysis. The zonal and meridional diurnal tidal amplitudes exhibit both annual and semiannual oscillations. The zonal and meridional components of semidiurnal tide show a significant annual oscillation. The phase values of both diurnal and semidiurnal tides exhibit annual oscillation above 90 km. The effect of background wind in the lower atmosphere on the strength of diurnal tidal amplitudes in the MLT region is studied. The effect of diurnal tides on the background wind in the lower thermosphere is also discussed.  相似文献

The behavior of the F2 layer at sunrise has been studied based on vertical-incidence ionospheric sounding data in Almaty (76°55′E, 43°15′N). Records with small amplitudes of electron density background fluctuations were selected in order to exactly estimate the onsets of a pronounced increase in the electron density at different altitudes. It has been indicated that the electron density growth rate is a function of altitude; in this case, the growth rate at the F2 layer maximum is much lower than such values at fixed altitudes of ~30–55 km below the layer maximum. The solar zenith angle (χ) and the blanketing layer thickness (h 0) at the beginning of a pronounced increase in the electron density at altitude h are linearly related to the h value, and these quantities vary within ~90° < χ < 100° and 180 km < h 0 < 260 km, respectively.  相似文献

The equipment and methodical characteristics of determining the vertical component of the ionospheric plasma motion velocity Vz based on an incoherent scatter radar of Institute of Ionosphere, National Academy of Sciences and Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine (Kharkiv), which is the only radar of such type in Central Europe, are described. Based on the radar data, the patterns of altitude and diurnal variations in Vz near the maximum of solar cycle 24 for the typical geophysical conditions (around the summer and winter solstices, the spring and fall equinoxes) at low geomagnetic activity and the specifics of these changes during ionospheric storms are presented. The results of modeling of the dynamic processes in ionospheric plasma under the conditions of the undisturbed ionosphere, including the determination of altitudetime variations in the thermospheric wind velocity, are presented. It has been established that this velocity can significantly differ from the thermospheric wind velocity calculated by the known empirical global models. This difference is likely related to the regional features of thermospheric wind that are not shown in the global models.  相似文献

The propagation of atmospheric gravity waves (AGWs) is studied in the context of geometrical optics in the nonisothermal, viscous, and thermal-conductive atmosphere of Earth in the presence of wind shifts. Parametric diagrams are plotted, determining the regions of allowed frequencies and horizontal phase velocities of AGWs depending on the altitude. It is shown that a part of the spectrum of AGWs propagates in stationary air in an altitude range from the Earth’s surface through the ionospheric F1 layer. AGW from nearearth sources attenuate below 250 km, while waves generated at altitudes of about 300 km and higher do not reach the Earth’s surface because of the inner reflection from the thermosphere base. The pattern changes under strong thermospheric winds. AGW dissipation decreases with an adverse wind shift and, hence, a part of the wave spectrum penetrated from the lower atmosphere to the altitudes of F2 layer.  相似文献

We have analyzed the behavior of the F2 layer parameters during nighttime periods of enhanced electron concentration by the results of vertical sounding of the ionosphere carried out with five-minute periodicity in Almaty (76°55′ E, 43°15′ N) in 2001–2012. The results are obtained within the frameworks of the unified concept of different types of ionospheric plasma disturbances manifested as variations in the height and half-thickness of the layer accompanied by an increase and decrease of N m F2 at the moments of maximum compression and expansion of the layer. A good correlation is found between height h Am , which corresponds to the maximum increase, and layer peak height h m F, while h Am is always less than h m F. The difference between h Am and h m F linearly increases with increasing h m F. Whereas the difference is ~38 km for h m F = 280 km, it is ~54 km for h m F = 380 km. Additionally, the correlation is good between the increase in the electron concentration in the layer maximum ΔN m and the maximum enhancement at the fixed height ΔN; the electron concentration enhancement in the layer maximum is about two to three times lower than its maximum enhancement at the fixed height.  相似文献

Current theories of F-layer storms are discussed using numerical simulations with the Upper Atmosphere Model, a global self-consistent, time dependent numerical model of the thermosphere-ionosphere-plasmasphere-magnetosphere system including electrodynamical coupling effects. A case study of a moderate geomagnetic storm at low solar activity during the northern winter solstice exemplifies the complex storm phenomena. The study focuses on positive ionospheric storm effects in relation to thermospheric disturbances in general and thermospheric composition changes in particular. It investigates the dynamical effects of both neutral meridional winds and electric fields caused by the disturbance dynamo effect. The penetration of short-time electric fields of magnetospheric origin during storm intensification phases is shown for the first time in this model study. Comparisons of the calculated thermospheric composition changes with satellite observations of AE-C and ESRO-4 during storm time show a good agreement. The empirical MSISE90 model, however, is less consistent with the simulations. It does not show the equatorward propagation of the disturbances and predicts that they have a gentler latitudinal gradient. Both theoretical and experimental data reveal that although the ratio of [O]/[N2] at high latitudes decreases significantly during the magnetic storm compared with the quiet time level, at mid to low latitudes it does not increase (at fixed altitudes) above the quiet reference level. Meanwhile, the ionospheric storm is positive there. We conclude that the positive phase of the ionospheric storm is mainly due to uplifting of ionospheric F2-region plasma at mid latitudes and its equatorward movement at low latitudes along geomagnetic field lines caused by large-scale neutral wind circulation and the passage of travelling atmospheric disturbances (TADs). The calculated zonal electric field disturbances also help to create the positive ionospheric disturbances both at middle and low latitudes. Minor contributions arise from the general density enhancement of all constituents during geomagnetic storms, which favours ion production processes above ion losses at fixed height under day-light conditions.  相似文献

The 3-h Kp index is widely used as a measure of geomagnetic activity for ionospheric studies. Specifically, it is the planetary index used to determine the geomagnetic dependence of statistical auroral patterns and the convection electric field for certain models. Its quasi anti-logarithm, the Ap index, is similarly used in statistical models of the neutral atmosphere and neutral wind. Physics-based ionospheric models, such as the Utah State University (USU) Time-Dependent Ionospheric Model (TDIM), use these statistical models as magnetospheric and thermospheric inputs. However, the 3-h time interval between index computations is now considered a shortfall with regard to specifying and forecasting phenomena known to have faster time constants, e.g., auroral electrojet variations during a substorm. Therefore, these indices have been targeted for high-time resolution development; we have developed such indices in Della-Rose et al. (1999). We now use our 15-minute station “K-like” index to determine the effect of introducing high-time resolution magnetic fluctuations into the TDIM inputs. This study represented the high-latitude ionosphere by a grid of 1484 locations, and was carried out for a geomagnetic storm period during solar maximum and “simulated” winter solstice conditions. We found that, for fixed Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) By/Bz ratio, driving the TDIM with our 15-minute “K-like” index altered the average high-latitude NmF2 value by as much as 8% (vs. the average NmF2 obtained using a 3-h index to drive the TDIM). More significantly, the standard deviation of the NmF2 variations was up to 35%. Under some conditions, the average NmF2 was changed by up to 30% with a standard deviation of over 60%. However, the effect of selecting different convection patterns that represented three southward IMF Bz orientations led to larger effects. The high-latitude average NmF2 changed by 10% or less, but the spread in the distribution always ranged from standard deviations of 29 to 68%. These results indicate that there is a substantial need to consider both short-term magnetic fluctuations and inclusion of real-time IMF data in the inputs to ionospheric models.  相似文献

The paper is dedicated to the studies of formation mechanisms of additional layers in the equatorial ionosphere carried out using numerical simulations with use of the Global Self-Consistent Model of the Thermosphere, Ionosphere, and Protonosphere (GSM TIP) modified in the part of the solution of the electric field equation in the Earth’s ionosphere. Calculations were preformed for quiet geomagnetic conditions using the MSIS-90 model for the calculation of thermospheric parameters. The obtained spatio-temporal pattern of thermospheric circulation and the variations in the dynamo electric field obtained on its basis make it possible to reproduce the stratification effect of the F2 layer and the appearance of the F3 layer in the equatorial ionosphere due to the action of the nonuniform in height zonal electric field at the geomagnetic equator. On the basis of the earlier presented results of calculations using the modified GSM TIP model, the appearance of a maximum in the vertical profile of the electron density at a height of ∼1000 km formed by H+ ions, which we called the G layer, has been predicted. Numerical simulations showed that this layer is formed by the meridional component of the thermospheric wind and is related to the formation of the nighttime midlatitude maximum at heights of the ionospheric F region.  相似文献

We study the solar dependence of the thermospheric dynamics based on more than 20 years Fabry–Perot interferometer O 6300 Å emission observation of polar cap thermospheric wind from three stations: Thule (76.53°N, 68.73°W, MLAT 86N), Eureka (80.06°N, 86.4°W, MLAT 89N), and Resolute (74.72°N, 94.98°W, MLAT 84N) in combination with the National Center for Atmospheric Research Thermosphere Ionosphere Electrodynamics General Circulation Model (NCAR-TIEGCM). All three stations showed a dominant diurnal oscillation in both the meridional and zonal components, which is a manifestation of anti-sunward thermospheric wind in the polar cap. The three-station observations and the TIEGCM simulation exhibit varying degree of correlations between the anti-sunward thermospheric wind and solar F10.7 index. The diurnal oscillation is stronger at Eureka (∼150 m/s) than that at Resolute (∼100 m/s) according to both observations and TIEGCM simulation. The semidiurnal oscillation is stronger at Resolute (∼20 m/s) than that at Eureka based (∼10 m/s) on data and model results. These results are consistent with a two-cell convection pattern in the polar cap thermospheric winds. The Thule results are less consistent between the model and observations. The simulated meridional wind diurnal and semidiurnal oscillations are stronger than those observed.  相似文献

Ionospheric F2-layer peak height hmF2 variations, as measured over 1986–1995 by the MU radar (34.85°N, 136.1°E) and as calculated with a theoretical model, are discussed. The diurnal variations of the measured peak height for different seasons and levels of solar activity are compared with those estimated from ionosonde M3000F2 and IRI predictions. Also given are the measured ion drift velocities and meridional neutral winds needed to understand the dynamic behavior of the F2-layer. It is found that: (1) hmF2 is generally higher during periods of the solar maximum than during periods of the solar minimum, and higher in summer than in winter; (2) for the solar maximum, hmF2 drops markedly in the morning and in the afternoon, while, for the solar minimum, the hmF2 minimum occurs in the morning during summer and usually in the afternoon during winter. In general, the measured hmF2 is well reproduced by our model when we use the observed drift velocities and plasma temperatures as inputs. Our modeling study shows that the neutral wind contributes strongly to the diurnal variation of hmF2 in winter by lowering the ionization layer by day, particularly for the solar maximum; it also helps to enlarge the day–night difference of hmF2 in summer. The northward electromagnetic drifts that usually cancel the neutral wind effect have only a minor effect for the location of the MU radar. Other features of the observed hmF2 variations, e.g., the solar maximum–minimum difference, the summer–winter difference, and the morning and afternoon drops, are explained by the basic processes of O+ production, loss and diffusion, as influenced by the atomic oxygen concentration and neutral and plasma temperatures.  相似文献

This paper proposes a method for forecasting the ionospheric critical frequency, f0F2, 1 h in advance, using the support vector machine (SVM) approach. The inputs to the SVM network are the time of day, seasonal information, 2 month running mean sunspot number (R2), 3 day running mean of the 3 h planetary magnetic ap index, the solar zenith angle, the present value f0F2(t) and its first and second increments, the observation of f0F2 at t?23 h, the 30-day mean value at time, t, fmF2 (t) and the previous 30 day running mean of f0F2 at t?23 h fmF2(t?23). The output is the predicted f0F2 1 h ahead. The network is trained to use the ionospheric sounding data at Haikou, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Lanzhou, Beijing, Changchun and Manzhouli stations at high and low solar activities. The performance of the SVM model was verified with observed data. It is shown that the predicted f0F2 has good agreement with the observed f0F2. The performance of the SVM model is superior to that of the autocorrelation and persistence models, and that it is comparable to that of the neural network model.  相似文献

A hypothesis about the effect of the tropospheric source on the longitudinal distributions of the equatorial plasma bubbles observed in the topside ionosphere was proposed earlier. It was supposed that this influence is transferred mainly by the thermospheric winds modulated by the DE3 tropospheric tidal waves. This conclusion was based on the discovered high degree correlation (R ? 0.79) between the variations of the longitudinal distribution of the plasma bubbles and the neutral atmospheric density. In this work, the hypothesis of the effect of the thermospheric tidal waves on the plasma bubbles at the stage of their generation is subjected to further verification. With this purpose, the longitudinal distributions of the frequency of the plasma bubble observations at the different ionospheric altitudes (~600 km, ROCSAT-1; ~1100 km, ISS-b) are analyzed; their principal similarity is revealed. Comparative analysis of these distributions with the longitudinal profile of the deviations of the zonal thermospheric wind (~400 km, CHAMP) modulated by the DE3 tidal wave is carried out; their considerable correlation (R ? 0.69) is revealed. We conclude that the longitudinal variations of the zonal wind associated with DE3 tidal waves can effect the longitudinal variations in the appearance frequency of the initial “seeding” perturbations, which further evolve into the plasma bubbles.  相似文献

Using the data of the ionospheric vertical sounding in Almaty, the response of various parameters of the nighttime F layer to the passage of an atmospheric gravity wave, generated during the large magnetic storm on July 24–25, 2004, is studied. The analysis of the phase relations between the variations in the electron density at the F layer maximum (NmF), the layer maximum height (hmF), and the layer half-thickness showed that they are determined by the slope of the wave phase front. It is shown that the half-thickness of the layer changes in anti-phase with the variations in NmF2. The known fact that the amplitudes of variations in the critical frequencies of the F 2 layer are smaller than the amplitudes of electron density variations at fixed heights is explained.  相似文献

We report initial results of data modeling and assimilation studies for several MU radar experiments. Various inputs to a one-dimensional ionospheric model are adjusted to provide agreement with observation and also to learn the sensitivity of the model to their variations. Certain observations are also used directly in the model to anchor or constrain its behavior. In particular, studies of the electron density from 100 to 500 km altitude in the ionosphere are carried out with the help of a theoretical model of O+, NO+, O+2 and N+2 densities and MU radar observations of the power, ion-drift and plasma-temperature profiles. Four typical cases are selected to study quantitatively the effects of the (A) perpendicular-north component of the plasma drift (15 December 1986), (B) atmospheric composition (7 October 1986), (C) solar EUV flux (2 August 1989) and (D) upper-boundary O+ density (5 October 1989) on the model NmF2, hmF2 and Ne profile, as well as on the neutral wind calculation from hmF2 and drift data. It is found that the measured vertical ion drift explains quantitatively well the measured hmF2 (particularly at low solar activity) while the model gives a better match with the measured Ne when it uses the hmF2-based wind rather than the measured plasma drift. Different model values of the atmospheric O/N2 ratio and EUV flux and different values of the upper-bound O+ density may modify not only NmF2 markedly but also hmF2: a lower O/N2 ratio results in higher hmF2; the EUVAC model gives higher hmF2 at high solar activity than does the EUV91 model; with a smaller upper-bound O+ density, hmF2 is lower by day but little changed by night. We specifically note that the meridional wind needed by the model to reproduce the observed hmF2 differed according to how well the model reproduced the observed NmF2. The uncertainties in the MSIS86 and EUV model predictions are also discussed. It is found that if the MSIS and EUV91 models are used together, the model gives an NmF2 higher than that measured at high solar activity. Thus the O/N2 ratio needs to be reduced from the MSIS value if EUV91 is used. If EUVAC is used, no large modification is required. At equinox for low solar activity, modeling with either EUV model produces NmF2 values lower than those measured, and so the true O/N2 ratio may be higher than that given by MSIS model.  相似文献
